Speaker 1 (00:06):
Matthew Stafford is on the practice field, but still not practicing.
That's right. The Rams starting quarterback who had a good
throwing session on Saturday, didn't wake up feeling the great
on Monday, and his status moving forward continues to be fluid.
Hear what Sean McVay had to say today, but exactly
what is going on with QB one in LA? So far,
(00:29):
so good for Shador Sanders, who impressed in his preseason debut,
But does chedor a fifth round pick really have a
chance to be QB one come September, Our, Cameron Wolf
and Mark Ross will be here to break down the
state of the quarterback competition in Cleveland. Chadour, contrary to
probably everything you've seen and read over the past several days,
was not the only rooky quarterback out there in Week one.
(00:52):
We saw some veterans as well. So who won and
who lost? And does it matter? We still got a
little ways till the regular season. Welcome Inside with the
Insiders Alongside Mike Garafalo and Judy Battista, I am Tom
Pellicero The Insiders Tonight, presented by Satta as we count
down the final twenty four days until the start of
(01:13):
the regular season, and the Rams continue to countdown what
they hope are the remaining days until their starting quarterback
is able to get out there and throw a football
around with his teammates. The plan we know as of Saturday,
when Sean Mevay talked to the media after the Rams
preseason opener, was that Matthew Stafford, after a roughly sixty
five throw session on Saturday, was going to be able
(01:36):
to be out there at least work into individual drills today. However,
Monday came. Still knows Stafford. Here's what McVeigh had to say.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
It's really just kind of it's static throwing. It's some
of the unloaded running on the treadmill. Sometimes it might
even be walking.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
He's able to do a.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Little bit of you know, lighter cardio and able to
do some good core work, but it's more just functional
strength surrounding the area while making sure that you don't
do anything to set yourself back based on the trajectory
that he's doing. But we are looking forward to getting
him and easing him back into football, you know, hopefully,
you know, in the near future.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
So this is now an extension of what we've seen
Mike several times in recent years, Matthew Stafford battle in
some type of n ailment, not practicing a lot of
cat ultimately has free would tell you one of the
toughest quarterbacks we've seen in his era is going to
find a way to be on the field. But a
back can be a really tricky thing. And the shifting
timetable here, if you want to be paranoid about the situation,
(02:36):
probably doesn't make you feel a lot better. What is
happening right now with Stafford in La.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Yeah, Tom, speaking from experience, it sounds like understanding that
a back didn't It can be a tricky thing, and
it can be something that if it's it's not just
a power through kind of a thing or hey, play
through the pain. No, it's functionality. And you heard Sean
McVay say that, and the best thing you can do
is monitor it treat it as best you can. But
(03:02):
you heard him also say McVeigh talking about a setback.
You don't want a setback. You're going from core work, walking,
running everything he said right there too. Eventually ya hoope
playing football, which is a lot more torque and core
work and taking shots and all that stuff. So even
if he gets to the point where he's back on
(03:22):
the field. It's something you're gonna have to watch and
it's something you're gonna have to treat, and it's something that
could pop up again. So that, I guess is the
scarier part for the Rams on this one. The good
part is they've got some time and they feel like
they're moving this thing in the right direction, and they
hope that at some point he gets in the field,
he stays on the field, Judy, And if it's like
a little bit of uncomfortability from time to time, you're
(03:44):
still feeling all right and you're still able to power through, well,
you're right.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
They do have some weeks to play with here before
we get to the opener. But the two things that
I find concerning here are, as Tom mentioned, the sort
of sliding timeline. Right, We've heard moremultiple times that Matthew
Stafford was expected to join the team in practice.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
That hasn't happened.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
One was right after the acclamation period, Remember when they
shut him down before camp even started. They said it
was just going to be five days. That obviously came
and went, and now we have this. And the second
part that is concerning to me is that he did
go through a workout on Saturday. He threw sixty eight passes,
so that's a lot of passes, and clearly something did
not feel right, and that's why he did not practice today.
(04:27):
Maybe you don't want to call that a setback. That
setback sounds really serious, but that's obviously not a good development.
That he threw the ball as much as you would
in a football game and then couldn't get out on
the practice field two days later. So I wouldn't say
it's time to panic, but I do think this is
a cause for concern. And as you said, yes, he
is almost certainly going to power through this. He will
(04:49):
do what he has to do to be on the field,
but you do wonder how his function is going to be,
And certainly, the further you get into August without practice time,
you assume he's probably not going to be quite as
sharp as he would be if he had a lot
of practice time. And they're going to have to be
careful with it, because the last thing you want to
do is aggravate something in August when you need him
(05:12):
to be ready to go in September. So certainly, as
the days keep passing, this is something that grows increasingly
alarming for the Rams.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
Again. Sean McVay said that surgery has not been any
part of the conversation, but with an aggravated disc, surgery's
probably not much of an option. You're not going to
have spinal fusion and go out and try to play
NFL quarterback.
Speaker 5 (05:31):
Here.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
Five days has turned into three weeks. We'll certainly be
keeping a close eye on Matthew Stafford's status as we
come up toward the opener. We didn't have a lot
of other players who were on the field playing football
over the weekend, including a guy and Tyler Shuck, who
had well a bit of an up and down debut.
There was this pick six, which Schuck said after the
game he would throw nine times out of ten, just
a good play by the dB came back with a
(05:55):
shot down the field that certainly stuck in Kellen Moore's mind.
Speaker 6 (06:00):
Pick You got to respond, and obviously no one wants
to throw an interception, you know, the way he responded
was really really good, you know, for him to come
back and handle that, you know, from an emotional standpoint,
really well. I thought that was awesome. The way these
guys respond is really really critical tests because that's what's
gonna happen in this league as you go through these seasons.
And so, you know, I thought he did a great job.
We'll learn from the interception. We'll learn from that. One
will grow, but you know, his response is really valuable.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Spencer Ratler got the start on Sunday. Spencer Ratler got
the first reps the day I was there at Saints
camp about a week ago here. But there's been that
since since the Saints took Tyler Schuck at number forty
overall that in all likelihood this was going to go
in his direction. Jake Hayner continues to compete in that
group as well. Perhaps a tell upcoming here when Kellen
(06:44):
Moore reveals who's going to be the preseason Week two
starter and Mike, I'll take a wild guess that last
name might rhyme with chuck.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Yeah, chuck, Chuck not spelled that way, but it said
that way. Anthony Richardson didn't have time to duck. If
we're going to keep the rhyme going here, A jabbo
all over him, David Ojobo all over him on this
one because he didn't see him. He should have picked
up the blitzer. He understands that said, he's got to
be on his p's and Q suffered at dislocated finger
that knocked him out of that game against the Ravens,
(07:15):
a game he was expected to play an extended period
of time. Here's Richardson on the hit.
Speaker 7 (07:20):
That's a tricky one because it's five man pro and
I'm hot from the backside. I just got to get
my eyes just be able to know react to that.
But just five man pro, just playing hot, you know,
I just gotta be on my p's and q's when
come to that. I just got to be keyed on
when when everybody bringing pressures like that. I started was
about to be the nickel, but they brought it from
the other side, so I got to be ready to
(07:40):
just get the ball up.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
Yep, there's the hot part where you should have completed
the pass and also got to protect yourself on there
on that one. So Daniel Jones gets the start. But
as Shane Steichen asked him after the game, and as
he said, then he's probably gonna have to juggle the
plan because the plan was for Richardson to play a
bunch week one, Daniel Jones to play a bunch week two,
and then so to make a decision from there. So
now Jones got the bulk of the action against the Ravens.
(08:04):
Now it's going to have to be Richardson getting more
time and hopefully staying upright in this next game against
the Packers. He's got to make a statement here, because
not only did he get hurt on that play, he
made a mental mistake. He's got to show the coaches
that he is capable of being the starter and can
handle it in more ways than one. Otherwise, it's going
to be that guy Daniel Jones. Will see how they
do against the Packers.
Speaker 8 (08:25):
Dudy all right.
Speaker 4 (08:28):
Speaking of the Packers, they went down bad thirty to
ten to the Jets, which was not the biggest news
from that game. The biggest news from that game was
this methodical drive by Justin Fields against Green Bay's starting defense.
He was patient in the pocket, he looked comfortable, he
went through his reads. He was three or four for
forty two yards, and he also scored on a thirteen
(08:49):
yard touchdown one so using his legs, which is something
the New York Jets have really been looking forward to
from Justin Fields. In the words of Aaron Glenn, we
love where he's at right now. Really, this was about
as good a debut for Justin Fields as the New
York Jets could possibly have hoped for. It has been
a little bit of an up and down training camp
for Fields and frankly the entire offense, but this was
(09:12):
certainly an up night. You see the run here. Aaron
Glenn has been adamant that they want him to use
all facets of his game. The offensive line looked good
for the Jets. If there was any downside, it was
the penalties, which Aaron Glenn was not happy about, but
otherwise very strong knight for Justin Fields. Aaron Glenn, New
(09:32):
York Jets and New York Jets fans are really excited today.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
Cam Ward also made his preseason NFL debut the number
one overall draftic, leading two drives, one of which ended
in a touchdown five of eight passing for sixty seven yards.
Coach Brian Callahan said this morning, cam Ward has not arrived.
There's still things that they need to work on with him. However,
it's been very apparent throughout the offseason. Of course, since
(09:56):
they took him at number one, the cam Ward was
going to be the starting quarterback. The idea was to
at least have the appearance of competition with Will Levis
to try to push this thing forward. Callahan certainly taking
the stance that there are other ways to push their
young quarterback who doesn't need it. By the way, Campboard
one of the hardest working guys, the first ones to arrive,
clearly smart, clearly can process it. Showed a little of
(10:18):
what he could do in that game against the Buccaneers, which,
based on the score, might have been the only thing
that went right for them on that particular day. Mike.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
Meanwhile, the city of Philadelphia exceled this afternoon when we
reported that Landon Dickerson will undergo a minor procedure on
his knee, and minor surgery is defined as surgery on
somebody other than yourself. But the minor part of it
is that there's two ways to handle a tormentiscus. You
can trim the affected part, which means you taking it
out of your knee, which is not great in the
(10:47):
long run because you're losing some cartilage there. Or you
can fully repair it sew it up, but that recovery
would have taken months in this case. Dickerson's going to
go with the trim and the hope is that he
is going to be ready for Week one Pro bowlguard
for the Philadelphia Eagles, looking like he's got a shot
to be there for the regular season when Judy last
night looked like he was going to miss the entire season.
(11:08):
So relatively good news.
Speaker 4 (11:11):
Definitely good news for them, and some fairly positive injury
news for Tampa Bay as well. Running back for a
Shot White, who suffered a groin injury in their big
win over the Titans. That's not the positive news. The
positive news, though, is that Todd Bowles listed him as
day to day, so it sounds like he is expected
to be making a return fairly soon. They avoided obviously
a much bigger injury. White is the bucks number two
(11:33):
running back behind Bucky Irving, but some very good news
there for the Bucks. Looks like they're going to get
him back to pretty good health, pretty good pretty soon.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
Tom not back anytime soon. Forty nine Ers wide receiver
Brandon Aiyuk coach Kyle Shanahan saying today they expect him
and the rest of the guys coming off Achl's and
there are a few on that forty nine Ers roster
likely returning sometime around Week six. Ayuk was injured last
year in Week six, just a couple of months after
he got that deal that took care of him in
(12:05):
San Francisco, after months upon months of trade speculation and negotiation.
At this point, the forty and I as certainly relying
heavily on the likes of young Ricky Piarsol entering year
two to be able to make up some of the gap. Again,
not a surprise in Ayuk. This is not evidence of
a setback. It's evidence of what was described to us
at the time as a very serious knee injury. It'll
(12:27):
end up being about twelve months before Brandon Ayuk is
back on the field. If any team knows what it's
like to scheme and game plan around not having one
of your top weapons, well, for better or worse, mostly
worse in recent years, it's the forty nine Ers who
have that experience.
Speaker 9 (12:42):
Chador Sanders making his NFL debut, Sanders.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
Looking throwing down, Chador Sanders, welcome.
Speaker 5 (12:53):
To the NFL.
Speaker 10 (12:55):
And now he has number one.
Speaker 5 (12:56):
I'lbe it in the.
Speaker 9 (12:57):
Preseason, but he'll take it and he will remember it
first and ten.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
Sanders close touched down Shittar.
Speaker 6 (13:06):
Sanders putting on a show here in the second quarter,
and the Browns bands and attendancy.
Speaker 5 (13:12):
Charlotte has taken over this stadium.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
Not many fifth round picks have a preseason debut like that,
But not many fifth round picks are Shador Sanders. Welcome
back to The Insiders, presented by Santa Tom pelicerro here
in Los Angeles, joined by Cameron Wolf and Mark cross Kim.
You were there. I've talked talked to people who watched
the tape and broke down the x's and o's. I've
talked to people with other teams. You were actually in
(13:36):
the building. Just give me the eye test here. What
you saw from Shador Sanders.
Speaker 11 (13:42):
Well, first, Tom, I haven't had a preseason game with
that much anticipation in my entire career. Everybody wanted to
see what Shador Sanders was going to do. And he
looked comfortable. He looked in command, and he looked like
a guy deserving of more opportunity.
Speaker 1 (13:55):
It's funny.
Speaker 11 (13:56):
I talked to him after the game one on one
and I asked him the greatest performance. He said a C.
Plus I still have more work to do. Some of
his teammates would give him a higher grade. And I
talked to their general manager Andrew Berry before the game,
and I said, what are you looking for? What would
help Chador.
Speaker 5 (14:12):
In this race?
Speaker 11 (14:13):
He said three things I'm looking for. One, how does
he go through the operation? Is he clean? Yes, that
was a check mark. Number Two, can he make plays
outside his scheme? We saw his athleticism on some of
those runs, some throws on the dig routes. And number
three in college, he would drift sometimes and get himself
in trouble when there's pressure. There were a few times
he did drift, but there were also times he showed
(14:34):
good footwork. Overall, a successful debut for Shador Sanders and look,
the Browns have to go through what is next for Shador.
Speaker 8 (14:43):
But their general manager, Edrew Berry.
Speaker 11 (14:44):
Said, it's a silly narrative that we haven't set him
up for success. This is our timeline, not anybody else's timeline.
And one example of that today he got more reps
than any other quarterback in practice running with the second
and third team, splitting reps with Dylan Gabriel. That's a
move up from where he has been through most of camp.
Speaker 10 (15:05):
Yeah, look, this is just going to be the new normal,
or has been the new normal camp with Shador Sanders,
and everything he does is electrified to the nth degree.
But really, when you strip it all away, you just
look at it in a football context, which the Browns
have been doing and which the NFL has done throughout
Shador sanders whole journey. Here is you have to look
(15:26):
at the plays and what he did really well and
what he did not do well. And it wasn't perfect.
But if you have a choice in preseason to say
you played good or you played bad, he played good,
but as he admitted, there's things to work on. He
had two beautiful throws there, but there were a couple
of throws where he threw short and had was off
with his accuracy. But the bigger picture is the Browns
(15:46):
are giving him every opportunity. I was there on Monday,
and he was last Monday. He was hurt the day before,
so he didn't practice and then got this opportunity because
Kenny Pickett was injured and because Dylan Gaber was injured.
So here comes his opportunity that he has to take
advantage of it. This is really all Shador has to
do when he keeps getting opportunities take advantage of the opportunities.
(16:07):
He's going to keep getting reps, keep doing well with
the reps. That's like any competition that you have, whether
it's a quarterback or a position group fellas, is that
when you get the opportunities, take advantage of the opportunities.
Speaker 5 (16:19):
So far he has done that.
Speaker 10 (16:20):
This weekend practice is a completely different set of opportunities
for Kevin Stefanski, for Andrew Berry to evaluate Shador Sanders
day to day and put everything in totality, not just
moment to moment and say.
Speaker 5 (16:34):
He played well this he's a starter.
Speaker 10 (16:36):
Now they're taking everything into consideration, what has happened throughout
the whole preseason.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
I think it's fair to say Shador Sanders, to the
extent there's a fifth round pick, there'd be questions about
is this guy you going to make the roster even
in that one preseason, noting he showed enough, that's hard
to imagine at this point Cleveland even trying to get
away with exposing him to waivers or something. But now
the question is not just cam how do you get
the reps for Shador to keep evaluating him, but Dylan Gabriel, Well,
if he's healthy enough to be out there this week
(17:02):
and he returned to practice in team drills today. How
do you balance those things out on top of having
Joe Flacco on top of them, eventually maybe having Kenny
Pickett here, I would say any other coach this would
be a lot to handle. Kevin Stefanski's also the guy
who went to the playoffs with five different starting quarterbacks
a couple of years ago. He's used to the chaos,
but its could be interested to see exactly how they
(17:22):
navigate these the next couple of weeks.
Speaker 11 (17:26):
Yeah, Tom, the Browns have done a great job of
navigating just the four men in that room you talked
about it. Look, most coaches will only have one or
two quarterbacks taking the majority of the reps. The Browns
have done a really good job of getting all four quarterbacks.
Speaker 5 (17:40):
The amount of reps.
Speaker 11 (17:40):
You could argue about first team reps versus second team reps,
but they're getting reps. Point in case, Chador, number four
on the roster, got the most reps of any quarterback today.
Now this race, Kevin Stefanski, their heads coach, says, I
want it to be over sooner than later. Joe Flacco
is the favorite and he's still getting most of the
first team reps. If you were handicapping it, he's probably
gonna be the guy set for Week one. But this
(18:02):
is a Browns team in transition. We may see multiple
quarterbacks and where Shador can make his jump is can
he pass? Can he Pickett? Can he pass Dylan Gabriel?
And you mentioned Dylan Gabriel. It's a big week for him.
I talked to him in pregame. He said, it's just
a minor hamstring tweak. I expect to play and I
hope that I can show what I can do in
this race. Kevin Stefanski's plan has been to get his
(18:23):
veterans reps heavily in joint practice like they have versus
the Eagles this week, and let the rookies play in
the preseason game. And so I anticipate that being the
same where you're seeing a lot of Shador and a
healthy a lot of Dylan Gabriel and another audition maybe
to see who can be number two and number three
among that group in this quarterback race.
Speaker 5 (18:43):
Yeah, Cam, it really is about number one.
Speaker 10 (18:46):
The Hampshire issues are there, like take it head the
hampershek Dylan Gabriel head to Hampsons and maybe try something
different there and practice there, Kevin Sefanski.
Speaker 5 (18:52):
But you're right when I was there, the feeling with
Joe Flack.
Speaker 10 (18:56):
Look, this is Joe's job, no matter what happens with
the other three, Joe's going to it was going to
go out there and start week one.
Speaker 5 (19:02):
Kenny Pickett really was the one that with.
Speaker 10 (19:04):
The intriguing person, the intriguing quarterback for that staff, and
that he gave a little bit of a dimension that
the other two couldn't. That's using his legs and Kenny
Picktt super Bowl champion last year, has played, has bounced around.
First round pick, but still very young and still has
a lot of upside. Of course, you talked about Chador
being a fifth round pick Tom and maybe not making
(19:25):
the team. You never want to cut a fifth round pick,
and you certainly don't want to cut a third round pick,
which Dylan Gabriel is.
Speaker 5 (19:31):
So I know Andrew Barry has.
Speaker 10 (19:33):
Talked about the possibility of keeping all of these quarterbacks,
and that could be a real possibility, especially after all
their NFL scouts are at these games. Other NFL scouts
evaluate these games, and what Shador showed the other day,
like Yep. If he's there on waivers, we're going to
get him now. If Dylan Gabriel has his chance, whatever
he gets out there, he has a chance to really
shine as well.
Speaker 5 (19:52):
And Kenny Pickett.
Speaker 10 (19:53):
So there's still a lot of football left to be
played between all of these guys. But right and now,
Jill Flacco would seem to be the guy because, as
we know, he can just get up off the couch
and go play a.

Terms and conditions apply. Ben Johnson made his preseason debut
as the Bears head coach on Sunday, a member of
their preseason broadcast team. Also a member of our team.
(20:52):
Stacy Dale's joins us right now to break down the Bears.
Speaker 4 (21:04):
Welcome back to the Insiders presented by SAPA. Let's head
to Chicago, where Ben Johnson made his debut as Bear's
head coach on Sunday. It was also the debut for
rookie wide receiver Luther Burden. The third here's Tyson Bagent
connecting with the white out for a key third down
conversion in the second quarter. Caleb Williams didn't play, but
he liked it. Later on that same drives, the Bears
(21:25):
facing fourth and goal from the four yard line, It's
Pagent again, this time hitting Maurice Alexander in the back
of the end zone for six. The game ended up
in a tie twenty four twenty four blah. But our
very own Stacy Dials was there calling the game from
the booth, so let's welcome her in for her thoughts
on the game. Stacy, thanks so much. All right, it
was Ben Johnson's debut. We didn't really get to see
(21:46):
Ben with Caleb, obviously, But what did you glean about
how Ben Johnson may operate the Bears?
Speaker 12 (21:54):
Yeah, we didn't get to see Judy Ben with Caleb
in the game, but we got to see them three
hours prior to kick off, which was quite unusual actually
and really interesting to watch when I arrived at the
stadium about four hours ahead of the game. Let's just
say Ben Johnson is a man with a plan, and
boy is he intense. How many head coaches and play
callers do you know that three hours before kickoff put
(22:17):
their QB one who's not playing in a preseason game
on that day through a seventy play workout. I mean
they were out on the field extensive time. As you
see the footage here. It was Tyson Bagent who got
the start. Case Keenum took over in the second half
with that touchdown there you saw from the veteran case Keenum.
But for Caleb Williams to go through that seventy play
(22:37):
scripted work with his receivers was fascinating and it speaks
to Ben Johnson. And then you see the play on
the field and what you glean from it when you
watch Tyson Beagen's play, who was quite efficient thirteen of nineteen.
I had a touchdown, he had a pick. The veteran
I mentioned case Keenum took over in the second half.
He was eight for ten.
Speaker 1 (22:55):
He had a couple.
Speaker 12 (22:56):
Touchdowns in that game. But what you saw was a glimpse,
a peek into what Ben Johnson wants to do offensively.
That is a heavy use of play action under center,
as we saw in Detroit with Jared Goff. But he's
got a very athletic quarterback in Caleb Williams. We will
see when he takes over here in the preseason. They
are going to get some action to be determined on that,
(23:17):
But we also saw a significant use of the run game,
and it was the rookie Kyle Mnungui. He's a name
you're going to want to circle. He's a seventh rounder,
outstanding contact balance, he plays with power, maybe not be
blazing in terms of speed, but he is a very
consistent player. He averaged five yards per run. He had
a very productive day that rookie. And they're going to
(23:38):
run the ball a heck of a lot and you're
going to see a really creative look from receivers. They
stacked them at times. You know, it'll be interesting to
see what kind of formations they use with those guys.
Not to mention the twelve personnel fun offense with Ben Johnson.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
Right on the other side of the field too.
Speaker 8 (23:56):
It was also out there.
Speaker 4 (23:57):
Obviously up and down season for him last year. How
to look at his debut, well, he looked surprising that
he played for me.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
I mean, we haven't seen him.
Speaker 12 (24:10):
Play in a preseason game since twenty twenty one, I believe,
and I had conversations prior to the game with folks
on their staff and he perhaps was lobbying to play
a little bit. They had joint practices on Friday. He
said it wasn't related, but he threw three picks against
the Bears in practice on Friday. I think ultimately Mike McDaniel,
his head coach and his play caller, he wanted to
(24:33):
put his guys through the process and he said, you're
absolutely going to see our starters again at some point.
They just traveled to Detroit, but you know, for Tua
to get in there, it was only a series. His leadership,
I would say, has really gone to another level. And
talking to a multiple people with the Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 3 (24:51):
And he was steady.
Speaker 8 (24:52):
I mean, he was who Tua is.
Speaker 12 (24:55):
And I'll just say this, I think their backup quarterback,
Zach Wilson, he got a lot of good reps on
Sunday against the Chicago Bears. He might be the most
important backup quarterback for obvious reasons in the NFL this season.
He's a player. Interestingly that the Dolphins were again a
conversation I had on Sunday, We're actually interested in back
(25:15):
in twenty twenty four. So starts with the Jets, goes
to the Denver Broncos, learns a whole bunch there with
Sean Payton, and now walks into a situation where he
has had to learn all new footwork, the new technicalities
of the position under Mike McDaniel, and a brand new offense.
But he's taken to it really well and will be
(25:35):
important for Tuatungo Bilo this season. We also saw Quinn
yours the seventh rounder. I believe he was the seventh rounder.
Correct me if I'm wrong. He's had a nice steady
camp too. But good to see two out on the field, Judy,
and it was good to see you in the booth,
Stacy Dales. Thanks for joining us, Tom.
Speaker 8 (25:55):
We had fun.
Speaker 1 (25:58):
Oh take it.
Speaker 3 (25:58):
We're giving Tom the segment off real rested Wins presented
by Satta. It's fine, Judy, I got it, no problem.
We're going to tell you who we think the winners
are from preseason Week one, Mark Ross, who you got.
Speaker 5 (26:09):
Well, the well rested wins got to be the New
England Patriots.
Speaker 10 (26:12):
And this has just been a continuation of an off
season of wins that I think the Patriots have had,
starting with having Mike Brabel, getting Mike Brabel back as
the head.
Speaker 5 (26:22):
Coach there, a proven winner, and then going to crush
it in free agency. Had a ton of.
Speaker 10 (26:26):
Money in free agency and they spent it in the
right way with the getting the number one free agent
there in Milton Williams from the Eagles, along with a
bunch of other editions, and then continue it up in
the draft with Will Campbell.
Speaker 5 (26:37):
They're the best offensive line in the draft.
Speaker 10 (26:39):
And then that young man right there, Trey bad and
Henderson in the second round who showed immediately there with
that opening kickoff of his explosiveness. A lot of preseason
gets overblown, which you Kennedy cannot do. You can't see
explosive this and weave and wiggle on a kickoff return there, Mike.
Speaker 5 (26:55):
So they absolutely crushed it there.
Speaker 10 (26:57):
In the whole offseason forty eight points, only gave up eighteen. Yes,
it is preseason, but the good vibes just seem to
be going the Patriots way. Drake By ran in that
five yard touchdown run as well. The unveiling of the
Tom Brady statue adds to the goodwill there. Maybe the
best Patriots team since Tom has left. Mike, we'll see,
(27:18):
but definitely wanted for me this weekend.
Speaker 3 (27:21):
For me, it's not a player on the field, it's
not a coach on the sideline. I'm going upstairs to
the general manager of the New York Giants. He had
two first round picks, Abdul Carter. He flashed. He's been
flashing every single day in training camp. And then the
most important position that a general manager should be worried about,
the quarterback. Jackson Dart I thought got off to a
great start, showed his ability to do a little bit
(27:42):
of everything, including stay calm when he's got a guy
barned down on him right there to throw a touchdown
pass to little Jordan Humphrey. When you get a guy
who's your quarterback as a rookie into the preseason, you
can't really make snap judgments, but you can say did
he manage things well? Did he stay calm? Was he
in control the whole time. Jack Jack check. He did
a little bit with his legs as well, including an
(28:05):
escape when he had the pressure. I think, nope, that's
not it. I thought that was gonna be the play
right there. We had the pressure bearing down on him.
He has impressed in training camp. He has gotten better
as camp has gone along. He's learned from his mistakes,
He's corrected them. He and Brian Dabel, the head coach,
have a fantastic relationship. In fact, that was a big
reason why the Giants were sold on Jackson Dart because
Dable and Dart hit it off big time during the
(28:26):
pre draft process in the spring, and that has continued
into the regular season. Malik Neighbors was the Giants pick
last year. You add him to what you're seeing to
these guys right now and that impressive draft class from
last year. John Mahra wanted to keep this regime intact,
wanted to bring Joe Shane back. He feels like this
is moving in the right direction. He's showing some patience
and it looks like from the early returns that it
(28:48):
potentially is going to pay off here. Joe Shane, You're
the big winner this weekend. In my opinion, Fields.
Speaker 1 (28:54):
Steps toward field, spurts at tackle.
Speaker 5 (28:56):
He's gonna run fields. He's gonna fangle to.
Speaker 1 (29:00):
Justin Fields touched himself, Yung jump ball, pretty mads. The
chat is his ball and his ball on Burrow finds
his mad and Jamar Chase is going to constant.
Speaker 3 (29:14):
To the end zones.
Speaker 5 (29:15):
His boll's come out.
Speaker 10 (29:15):
Let's just bee down, Mary colls ry gals.
Speaker 5 (29:19):
It's already enough season out.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
The number, chill.
Speaker 9 (29:23):
Trapid, Steve takes it a hundred, A lot of good
in week one of the preseason, a little bit of
bad too, And for more on the ladder, let's bring
in our guy, Jeffrey Chidio, who's got a story coming
out tomorrow NFL dot com on early warning signs around
the NFL.
Speaker 1 (29:40):
Let's start out Jeffrey in Buffalo with one guy. We
saw a little bit in warm ups. He was dressed.
He hasn't practiced in a week. James Cook, what's your
level of concern right now?
Speaker 7 (29:52):
There?
Speaker 13 (29:52):
It's growing a lot after this weekend, tom because he
just popped a little hand grenade into the Buffalo Bill's
locker room with that stunt he pulled, not playing. You
saw Sean McDermott have to answer questions after that. I'm
sure players were answering questions after that. And I understand
James cook situation here. He's unhappy about his contract, but
unhappy throughout the offseason, but it seems like he's willing
(30:12):
to go next level with this now, and that's not
a good thing for a Bills team that really has
a great opportunity to win the Super Bowl and reach
the Super Bowl. You know, you're talking about a team
that is only playing one game outside of the Eastern
time zone, has a great chance to get the number
one seed, a terrific offense, terrific defense. James Cook's a
big part of this. Had eighteen total touchdowns last year.
So I understand contract negotiations get ugly, and there's bigger
(30:35):
ones out there with Michael Parsons and Trey Hendrickson and
Terry McLaurin, But my god, this deal. I think it's
ugly throughout the start of the season. It could really
put the Bills in a bad spot in a year
where they really think they can do a lot of
big things.
Speaker 1 (30:46):
Now, I'll say this, Unlike mikeh and the Cowboys, there
at least have been negotiations. Unlike the Commanders and McLaurin,
they're not that far apart here. But there's all such
things as close. There is only done and there is
no done deal just yet. James Cook in Buffalo. How
about Kansas City, Jeffrey, stop me if you've heard this
one before. They're banged up at the wide receiver position,
(31:06):
among other places. Right now. How concerned we?
Speaker 8 (31:09):
Well, two players here that really concerned me.
Speaker 13 (31:12):
One is Hollywood Brown you mentioned the wide receiver, and
the other is Christian Fulton, a cornerback they signed in
free agency for a two year, twenty man dollars deal.
Speaker 8 (31:20):
I'll start with Hollywood Brown.
Speaker 13 (31:21):
Last year, obviously, he came in with a lot of
high expectations to be a deep threat. He had a
Collardboat injury, missed fourteen games, really had minimal impact. The
fact that he's dealing with an ankle spray now that
has kept him from practicing since July twenty ninth.
Speaker 8 (31:35):
He's still on the field today.
Speaker 13 (31:38):
That's got to be a huge ominous sign for a
team that's going to lose Rashid Rice to a suspension
at some point. Really hopes to have a more electric
passing game going on, and then Fulton's kind of a
low key deal here because they brought him in to
be an outside corner and allow Trip McDuffie to play
back in the slot, where he's really the most defective
cornerback on this team.
Speaker 8 (31:57):
If McDuffie has to pay.
Speaker 13 (31:59):
Outside and somebody has to play in the slot, or
it's going to really hurt a secondary that quietly gave
up a lot of big plays one of the worst
teams in the league, and as far as allowing explosive plays,
so both in baying veanging that with his knee surgery
he had in the offseason, Brown being baited with his
angle centrict situation.
Speaker 8 (32:15):
I know Johnson was in the offensive line is big top,
but these are big things.
Speaker 1 (32:18):
For the Chiefs, not the only injury in the AFC
West for Sean Slater out for the entire scene with
a torn Pateeller ten just a couple of weeks after
they made him the highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL.
How concerned are be there, Jeffery.
Speaker 13 (32:30):
I'm definitely concerned because Jim Harbaugh talks about this offensive
line like it's the most important weapon on this team
outside of their quarterback Justin Herbert, and he's built a
great offensive line with with Joe offf and Rashaun Slater
as the book ND tackles. Now you lose later to
that ptillar tendon injury, you probably got to move or
you're going to move Joe Alton now to left tackle.
Speaker 8 (32:49):
He's pretty good there.
Speaker 13 (32:50):
He came out of Notre Dame playing that position with
a top five draft pick a year ago. But you're
movie Trey Pickens Pipkins to right tackle. And I just
want to see how this offense looks now. Because Harpball
wants to run the football. They brought an o'mary and Hanton.
Speaker 7 (33:03):
To do that.
Speaker 13 (33:04):
They brought a Nazi hair to do that. Losey Rot
Rashaan Slater the biggest injury of the offseason so far.
Speaker 1 (33:10):
Joel predominantly has played on the right side since he
got to the NFL, but it literally says on the
back of his jersey, Jeffrey a lt Welcome back to
the Insiders presented by SATFA. Shador Sanders presented a pretty
good performance in his first time out to touchdown passes
for the Browns after getting the start in the Cleveland
(33:30):
Alien quarterback room against the Panthers. Well, he've won a
lot of fans during that game, including Lebron, James, DeMarcus Cousins,
post on social media and even Steam and Willie Beaman.
Speaker 5 (33:43):
I hear what all y'all saying.
Speaker 14 (33:45):
My name is Willy Willy Beman.
Speaker 5 (33:47):
Hey, he's a real deal.
Speaker 7 (33:53):
Hey.
Speaker 5 (33:54):
Now, how y'all feel now? How y'all feel now?
Speaker 8 (33:57):
No matter what he do?
Speaker 5 (33:58):
How you feel now?
Speaker 1 (34:00):
Man?
Speaker 14 (34:00):
Playing boys?
Speaker 6 (34:01):
Daddy?
Speaker 14 (34:02):
Are you haters? If you hate you? Do you hate football?
How do you not love that story? Dion Sanders absolute legend.
I can't now. It's Sun picking up the pace, falling
falling out that.
Speaker 5 (34:22):
That's nipe for fifty percent, Hoopers.
Speaker 1 (34:24):
Said in Hormy Jamie Fox not the only person who
felt that way. As we get to Rookie moves right now,
Tom Pelsaro back here on the Insiders along with Mike Herrafulla,
Judy Batista, and Mark Ross. All Right, you know, or
we've talked a lot about him, and we will continue
to talk a lot about him pay next game Saturday
right here on NFL Network. But let's talk right now
(34:45):
about some of the other players that we were impressed
with right out of the gate. I start with you, Judy,
what rookie jumped out here preseason week one?
Speaker 4 (34:55):
Well, I could have said Jackson Dark, but I went
to the other side of the ball. For the New
York Giants, Abdul Carter, who has been wrecking practices throughout
training camp, and he continued that during this game, he
was only on the fields for snick six snaps, three
of them were pass rushes. He got to the quarterback
on all of them, including when he was on an
island against Dean Dawkins, starting offensive lineman for the Buffalo Bills. Again,
(35:19):
this is what Abdul Carter has looked like all summer
in training camp. He's used a variety of moves. The
Giants are moving him all around the defensive line. This
is really promising for the Giants pass rush. Dexter Lawrence
is not even on the field with them yet, so
they are not even whole. Abdul Carter just showed great burst,
great get off. Really promising start for him. Not a
(35:39):
surprise after what we've seen all summer from them.
Speaker 1 (35:41):
Always a good sign when you can talk about multiple
rookies on the same team for one draft class being
the early standouts mike Le you got.
Speaker 3 (35:49):
I'm gonna go Tyler Warren. I was at that game
in Baltimore where the Colts went to him early had
a tight end screens. He saw a little catch and run.
Then he had one where he kind of settled down
in the middle of his own. Then he had this
I believe it was an over route that he caught.
So three catches for forty yards for Tyler Warren. The
first round tight end, and we thought was gonna be
the first tight end taken wound up being the second.
(36:09):
But a guy that clearly showed the ability to not
only work the passing game but also the run game
as well. He did block well in this game. Yeah,
I grinded the tape, all right. Maybe I just called
Baldy and said, had to Tyler Warren block and he
said he blocked great. I said, cool, awesome. I'm gonna
use that on the Insiders tonight. Baldy, Thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
Now I know Mark did grind the tape. Anybody could
pick first rounders here, but gave me Mark maybe a
deep cut. Who'd you like here among these rookies in
the first week out.
Speaker 5 (36:36):
I had to go with Ravens' sixth round pick Lejohonte.
Speaker 10 (36:39):
Webster with the turner slash wide receiver, and the Ravens
had five six round draft picks, and this is kind
of odd because two of them are going to be
forced to start right away.
Speaker 5 (36:49):
That's Tyler Luke and now the John T.
Speaker 10 (36:51):
Webster showed I don't care if you had four punt
returners last year. This is my job to take right
now with this eighty seven yard punt return to the house.
But he also had another seventeen yard punt return where
he looked shifty, he looked electric, he looked elusive, he
looked tough, and then he had a big time catch
you'll see right here on the This is not the one,
(37:13):
but he had another one down the side behind a
thirty yard catch where he adjusted and came back for
the ball.
Speaker 5 (37:18):
But not only did he show I think we're going
to show it right here.
Speaker 10 (37:20):
Not only did the show, hey, look, I could be
the number one punt returner, but I also could get
quality snaps there at the slot we're on the outside.
Speaker 5 (37:28):
Watched his adjustment right there about that young man where
the little threat Zay Flowers goes down. Who cares total
to John tay in there in the slot we'll get
to go.
Speaker 1 (37:35):
There's only a few of those late round, mid round
receivers that pop. I'll give you another one. Tory Horton,
fifth round pick out of Colorado Stadium, has been one
of these standouts in Seahawks' training camp throughout and you
saw why. He was targeted seven times in this game.
Three catches for thirty one yards, including that ten yard
touchdown right there from Drew Locke. Everybody wonders, exactly what
(37:58):
is that Seahawks receiver unit it going to look like
in twenty twenty five. We know it's gonna be a
lot different. They trade away DK Metcalf, they cut Tyler Lockett,
who is now in Tennessee. They bring in Cooper Cup.
They got Jackson Smith and Jig, but maybe Tory Horton
another core part for the same front office that found
you know, guys like Doug Baldwin once upon a time.
(38:18):
They've got an eye for that position in Seattle. Guys,
thank you all very much. The twenty twenty five NFL
season is almost here and single game tickets are on
sale now. Seventeen games for all thirty two teams in
his NFL dot Com slash tickets to purchase tickets today.
Verified tickets are available through the NFL ticket network, including Ticketmasters,
Seat Geek, and Sports Illustrated Tickets. We saw a lot
(38:42):
in the first full week of the preseason. We also
saw it well, some things we've never seen before. Look
out CD. At least he's got his contract at this point,
unlike a year ago. That doesn't look like it feels
good for anyone. We'll break it all down right after
this Sunday.
Speaker 8 (38:57):
It sets.
Speaker 1 (39:05):
Another weekend chock full of preseason action weights right here
on NFL Network. All kicking off Friday night seven pm.
Cam Ward and the Titans going up against Michael Pennix
and the Falcons Chiefs Seahawks that night as well. How
about a quadruple header kicked off by Shador Sanders, you know,
and Dylan Gabriel Joe Flack. Those are the guys on
the Browns against the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles. All
(39:27):
wraps up on Sunday the new look Jaguars Travis Hunter
against the Saints and their three way quarterback competition. Jaguars
already gave us one of the most unique highlights in
preseason history. Cam Little from way downtown. That's a seventy
yard field goal. You know it's a long field goal
because Jackson Deville didn't even get in position to do
(39:49):
something silly behind the goalpost. Where is he? This was
your moment? How many times do we see him holding
his head and being upset when something goes wrong? A
great moment. He was putting on his speedobacks stage or something.
Congrats to Cam Little. It would be a record if
we were in the regular season. Traveon Henderson also making
some noise. He did not take him long opening gickoff.
How about one hundred yards? The second round pick out
(40:13):
of Ohio State to the house. This is lee of
the poor kicker. Don't you just just give up? Nothing
good's gonna happen if you get there anyway up, he's
gonna pull up about the twenty five there like he
just finished one hundred yard dash. Realized he has no
chance of winning the race. We're just gonna power that
down before Papa hamstring. Traveon Henderson maybe trying to work
his way into to be an RB one. Him and
(40:34):
Ramandre Stevenson right now, the one two punch in the backfield.
Speaking of one to two punches. How about this one
two I'm punching you. That's the side judge taking down
cdy Lamb like a free safety over the middle. That's
not even legal anymore. They outlawed that type of hit
in the nineties. Somehow, though the penalty went on CD Lamb,
you cannot be in the white restincted area. Welcome back
(40:58):
to the Insiders, presented by Sadta, Tom Pilicero, Tuty Batista.
I'm like, carefullo, dude to your favorite moment for preseason
week one.
Speaker 4 (41:06):
It was obviously that do we have a report on
how the official is doing? Because running full speed into
CD Lamb without having any pats onward hurt. I mean,
CD is fine, he's a professional athlete, but that poor
official probably didn't feel so good afterwards.
Speaker 3 (41:22):
Oh my gosh, so bad, so bad. Where's the giftback coach?
Stay out of the white, Stay out of the white, guys,
there was a touchdown, probably had the video ready my
bad base shall toot and the rookie running back for
the Jacksonville Jaguars go find it after the show, which
is only in like twenty seconds. We're done here, just
pushing guys, pushing the entire pile into the end zone. Sorry,
(41:44):
gotta wrap up CD again.
Speaker 1 (41:47):
It's a safety issue. Stay out of the white area.
It's not funny, but it's pretty funny when you watch
it up close right there. I liked the official even
trying to hold CD up. Yeah, because that's the concern
in that moment. We're back tomorrow seven bms, your time
seeing
Speaker 14 (42:03):
H
