On the latest Off the Edge with Cam Jordan podcast, Cam is joined by his teammate and follow pass rusher Carl Granderson during the Sack Summit in Las Vegas. The guys talk about Carl’s journey going from a 175-pound no position player at the University of Wyoming, to a 285-pound dominating sack artist in the NFL. Cam gives Carl his flowers for his development from a special teams player to one of the stalwarts on the Saints defensive line. Carl also explains why he felt attending the Sack Summit was important to improve his game, and what he wanted to learn from guys like Warren Sapp, Maxx Crosby, and Von Miller. Plus, Cam and Carl play a game of Super Bowl ring vs. $100 million dollars. All that, and much more, in a conversation you don’t want to miss.

The Off the Edge with Cam Jordan podcast is a production of the NFL in partnership with iHeart Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
Here we go off the edge with me, your host
Cam Jordan, just got back from touring the world, about
to get serious about football. When you got to see this,
we were no longer being Viva Las Vegas. Uh with
my man here. Uh, Carl Grandison attending the Sack Summit.
You know me, Vaughan Miller, Max Crosby.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
I think this Sax Summer is gonna be huge. We're
gonna turn into something great in the future. But right
now we're gonna talk about the present and presently, my guy,
Carl Grandison is the future of the Saints. I mean,
let's just be real. My man went to the University
of Wyoming in all four years when I when I
saw him at first, this man was like two hundred
and forty pounds, two thirty five.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
Get started off at Wyoming. Why are you lying though?

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Like you said, you said two forty five, you're a liar.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Forty five soaking with with.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
The backpack on, all the all the sweats, big chain,
big hoodie too. No no doubt, Okay, as long as
we know, like it wasn't forty five.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
But look I started off at Wyoming. I won seventy five,
so one hundred pounds up outside linebacker with the dreads
coming there with the dreads, nose pinsons.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Yeah, Sacramento. I was in my young thug era.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
That's what you would have to claimed, young thug.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Okay, Sacramento, California. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Yeah, came out of Sacramento to Wyoming. How do we
get to Wyoming?

Speaker 2 (01:33):
You know, they just didn't know what to put me at.
They was like two one seventy five. You've got good
highlights on defense, but we can't put you at the
end outside linebacker. You're not fast enough and the receiver
you don't got the footwork for that. So I just
ended up at Wyoming my only offer, and Washington State

(01:56):
try to come at the last minute, but you know, mom, dudes,
we're gonna stick with the day once.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
Oh it was a loyalty hype.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Yeah, loyalty. So they didn't pay me, no check. I
didn't get no range over.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
He was one seventy five. There was no check.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Yeah, none of that. So I had to work my
way up for sure.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Two stars, three stars, Uh, no star.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
Probably no star. Oh, I didn't look into that. You know.
I'm a grinder, yeah, a big grinder.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
Yeah, okay, Okay, that is that is impressive to come
out of University of Wyoming going drafted. Yeah, a d
line coach, right, Neilson at the time, he was he
was talking you up though, like you know what I'm saying,
Like you had it like right before Ricky Cam He's hey,
I got a guy. Yeah, he's gonna be special when
we can get him here, we can get you you know,

(02:43):
get him right, And I was like, you say this
about everybody.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
Everybody.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Yeah, you know what I'm saying, Like that is a
coach spiel.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
But see, you know when when you get done playing,
you're gonna see you're gonna have the eye.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
You know you're gonna have that.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
I Kim Jordan, obviously you're a great player, future Hall
of famers. So Bryan Nielson, he obviously seen potential in me. Right,
Like you said, I was only two forty so, but
I could run all day like a gazelle. So when
I came to a rookie minute camp, I was messing
up every play, but I was down the field, fifty

(03:17):
yards down the field trying to get the ball.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
So that's how that's how you make the team.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Though, when I tell you there was that your rookie
or your second year. It had been your rookie year
when d line coach looked at you in the eyes
mid play of a practice, right and was like, this
is how you get cut?

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Yeah, And I was like, hey, yo.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Yeah, I said that was that was actually the training
camp for the second year.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Yeah, second year. But all I was trying to do
is be great.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
I was copying the vets, you know what I'm saying,
And you know, I don't know no better. I'm still
a rookie at this point until Game three up the
next season and copy on the vets and I'm like,
where am I messing up at?

Speaker 1 (03:59):
And he's just all in me, like he's going crazy.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
I had to get it right, you living, you learn right, right, right?

Speaker 1 (04:08):
But you made the team rookie year as undrafted, killed
it on special teams, got some, got a little bit
of playing time. Second year, made it to your own
you know, third year rolling contract.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Yeah, I mean obviously I had to work my way up.
I had a few first rounders in front of me,
Marcus Davenport, a few other guys, and Mayan.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
Nielson, being an old school Chris.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Henderson forgot, can't forget that and uh so when I
first came in, you just got to know yourself. And
I was just a special team guy. And I knew
that if I wanted to stick around, it'll be a
special team. It's funny because my coach at Wyoming was like,
you know, at the next level, you're gonna have to
play I ain't never what I'm a ball player like,

(04:59):
I ain't and special teams what I look like as
soon as I get to.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
The old player, special teams get back there.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
I return kickoff, field goal block and a bench one
on defense. So yeah, I worked my way up first year,
second year, third year behind h Hender Henderson, Marcus Davenport.
But it was a blessing of I was able to see,
like you know, probo greatness and learn from the older players, which.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
Brings you into you know, now just finished up year six,
had your greatest season yet eight and a half sacks.
I mean, you know, ain't a half that that's that's
a breakout that now you can build off that. You
up this upcoming season. What are we looking forward to?

Speaker 2 (05:45):
So upcoming season obviously sleeps. You could never be satisfied.
So last season eight and a half, a few TFLs
and first year starter. Obviously, I see the game way
better now the player, and I just want to continue
to evolving my game and getting better and recognizing offense

(06:09):
so I could play faster. And I feel like I
missed a lot of opportunities last year. I hit a
big wall in the middle of the season. So I
want to continue to just finish the whole season, start
off strong, finished strong, and this season, I ain't even
gonna go for numbers. I'm gonna just go for state talent.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
And kill it.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
Play recognition, I mean, yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
That's the key part. And you know, some people, I
don't know how people do it. They don't watch film,
but I got to watch the offense and see like formations,
and you know, that's what helped me play faster.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
That's the difference between now Grando.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
And I was trying to put you on this film
early on here, it wasn't on their.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Life look like like like you said, I came a
long way. So when I first came in, just I
was being content with just special teams, like knowing that
I wasn't gonna get any playing time, knowing that you know,
I probably get fourteen players a game and after you're four,

(07:12):
it just clicked, like you know, Trey Anderson left and
it was just like, I gotta switch and find something different.
I can't keep doing the same thing. So I didn't.
Went from waking up at eight o'clock and team meeting
at nine to getting up at six working out, getting
my conditioning in cold and hot tub and then eat

(07:33):
breakfast and then team meetings.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
So just something small like that help them.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
We'll be right back. And you say, you say, you
hit the wall? What is this wall? Why are you
hitting the wall? Like during the season.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
You're a professional man.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
I mean during the middle of season, like you know,
you start to get a little bit more like a
little bit more focused towards you, like, yeah, like welcome
to that that oh you're get in the double double
team in the right ain't the wall?

Speaker 3 (07:58):
You know what I'm saying That.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
That's where you that's where you really got to step
on the gas.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Really, you know what it was for me, I think
going into training camp and then the first half of
the season, boom. You just came from chraining camp, training camp.
Got in the first half of the season. Obviously you're
getting more reps, you sweating a lot more, you becoming
more tired, you know at night time, so you probably

(08:24):
not eating as much, you don't.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
Work out as hard. So for me last year, I
feel like that was.

Speaker 2 (08:30):
The main main thing up hitting out wall, I start
to lose a couple of pounds and you could see
it in the game. So this year, you know, I
got a chef. Now I'm have it for the season.
I got it the whole off season. So that's the
main thing for me is staying strong and being around
the weight range that I want to play out so

(08:50):
I could just continue to get better the whole season.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
Yeah. So that's I mean.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
Really like your first season of full time starting to Yeah,
like so you go from you know, a couple of
years because a few of the years you get more
and more playing time till like last year you was
eating fifty five sixty five plays.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
Sweating.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
I'm a sweater, so I sweat fact, but look, I
give it a hundred and ten. I'm gonna give it
a hundred ten practice. I'm a work card in the game, Like,
I just sweat a lot. So I found I found
a goal and I found.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
A cheat code. Out.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
You don't think you're unlocked life. You got life secrets.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
I got levels eight and a half was a little some,
but yeah, we're gonna elevate though.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
Yeah, I mean there's there's there's a there's a reason why.
You know, like the way your trajectory has gone. You
kept on working, you kept on pushing the limits. Uh,
you know, like for me on the Saints, I've been
a sack leader. What is this going to the year fourteen?
At least ten of them things? You know, I think
the last person other than you to beat me out
was Trey and you see where that goes. Before Trey,

(09:56):
I think it was junior conn lect or like and
that's wait, un maybe then my rookie year. So maybe
I've had it for the last you know, nine out
of thirteen seasons. It's not bad.

Speaker 2 (10:07):
Yeah, it's this upcoming season. I'm kind of excited. So like,
you know you're gonna be on the other side, but
I know you got some some tools coming back out
of this.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
I'm big revenge season. You know, I was looking I
was hurt for what second games last year?

Speaker 3 (10:20):
They don't know that, but it don't matter.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
Nobody cares.

Speaker 3 (10:24):
Bro.

Speaker 1 (10:24):
This is the production business at the end of the day.
In the field of the business. Right, So we're gonna
get back. We're gonna get back to big business. It
was money on no, no, no, I want a super Bowl.
You can have the money. You can have you can
have the money. What would you want? Would you want
a career where you make over a hundred million dollars
or would you want a career where you make fifty

(10:46):
five sixty but you got a super Bowl?

Speaker 3 (10:48):
I ain't gonna lie. I got the money. Like the money.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
If you touch the money, but if it don't make
you like complete, it don't and it's happy yet you
know what I'm saying, it's something missing. So I feel
like the ring, the championship. I see other guys championship.
You can't really say too much. It's got like when
you're on a team, it's like, okay, you've been there

(11:16):
before us like you you up here.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
Every every coach is like, who won a championship? I
need that feeling like I'm him man.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
Because look, even if you don't say you said a
hundred mil boom or a ring, I picked a ring
because look, if you perform, you still can't get paid
off the ring.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
Right. I know that a.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Lot of people in the NBA, Like you got guys
who been on you know, championship teams and who wasn't
even playing like that, go somewhere else to get like
a forward for six men.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
You know, guys, Look, guys, guys be on the NFL
teams may not be catching a lot of playing time,
but because they got a super Bowl.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
Ring, that's all that matters. You know, we're gonna go
get this. It's in New Orleans.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
Let's speak of it to this now, super Bowl in
New Orleans, right, New Orleans Saints.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
Yeah, we're gonna be in that thing, facing who facing whoever.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
It don't matter.

Speaker 3 (12:15):
I don't care at this point. We're just gonna get
in that thing.

Speaker 1 (12:20):
Please please let me get in there. I need that
in the worst way. Three years or no playoffs. We
ain't seen a playoff check in three years and been
on the cusp of playoffs, like we're always.

Speaker 3 (12:31):
Fighting at the end. You want to know, it's so crazy.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
It seems like when when you don't make it to
the playoffs, the season is much longer like and it's
much like everything the whole season is just going backwards.
You make it to the playoffs, even though the season
is longer because you in June, right on.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
Your way breath of life, You're like I need this.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
You get more motivation, more like okay, let's go right,
We're finna kick it up or not when you know
your potential playoffs is kind of if it's kind of like.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
But that ain't really bit us. We've always been in
the hunt, you know, like those three years we haven't
made it. This past three years, it's always like we
have a chance to make it, even in like fighting
for that last game or two whatever it is, and
it's like, all right, we ain't never been in a
position where it's been like halfway through the season and
the same to eliminated.

Speaker 3 (13:22):
Like we're twelve.

Speaker 1 (13:23):
You're like, I got six weeks left for football. You
know this is like oh man, like we like we
go to locker room, we run into the t D
TVs to see him playing. All right, we can make it.
Oh damn.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
But now now this ship, we're gonna take it outside.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
We're gonna take We're gonna take it into our own hands,
put in our own destiny.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
We got too many vets. Now I'm at big, big brand,
big brand, so we got some vets on defense and offense.
So we've just got to take off. Can't let nothing
slide by, right, That's the thing right there there, it's.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
Got to be. I mean, with our team now, the
way we stacked defensive line, you know, at some point
I'm gonna need to see Carl Grandison, Chase Young, Cam
Jordan's on on this field at the same time, at
the same time, at the same time.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
Someway somehow if one of us got to go to
the corner we got we got too many athletes out
there not to be out there.

Speaker 1 (14:21):
I'm gonna let the two skinny guys be on the
outside and I'm gonna be spinning.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
Shoot, who's skinny? What to considered skinny guy? Huh, I'm
big too, eighty six. I'm big though, just said that's
seventy week six, what you're gonna be though, Okay by
week six week to no, no, no, that's that's like
week to week ten, I'm too, and then okay, week sixteen,

(14:48):
I'm a boy like too sixty.

Speaker 3 (14:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (14:51):
So, like I said about about week so, I'm envious.
You skinny people stay skinny house some way. Like you
you come in camp heavy and leave lighter. I come
in camp lighter and leave heavier.

Speaker 3 (15:05):
And I'm like, everybody can't be built like you. School
was built.

Speaker 2 (15:10):
You was born five to three, two hundred and fifteen pounds,
like you ain't never changed, You don't lose.

Speaker 3 (15:17):
Weight, like like, I'm sick of this. It's not on
you with you, but man, I'm trying.

Speaker 1 (15:22):
To get it off me. I'm trying to get it
off me. The MLB's gotta go. So now were we
hear the Sack Summit? You know how just fitting to
you building yourself up for this upcoming season. Like you know,
there's there's some names out there. You know, there's the
Josh Allens, there's a Von Miller's, the Max Crosby's. You know,
there's there's me, There's Carl Grandison, There's there's guys out here.

(15:42):
Is the list is probably sitting about thirty five forty
five professional defensive ends and d dts. What are you
looking to get away from this?

Speaker 2 (15:50):
Honestly, we all, like you said, the guys who name,
we all have different playing techniques and playing styles. So
I'm just looking to gain some knowledge from from all
the other guys. And you know, like you said, Max
Crost me, he gonna give it. Give it as all
you got von Miller who got the ghost? You know,
So anything I can get from this summer, this is

(16:11):
my first year, Marcus Davenport. I gotta learn the bull rush,
uh So anything's going to get knowledge, state power, all hands,
heads and everything he's gonna run through.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
I'm up nice. So but yeah, like like you said,
I'm coming to gang knowledge. I don't know it all.
You know, I got.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
I got my way of playing, so I can teach
them guys some things that could teach me something. And
it's a blessing to be able to come, uh to
a summer like this because you just got great players
all around, and and to learn so much and techniques
and watch film and be on the field with these guys.

Speaker 3 (16:49):
Are gonna be excited.

Speaker 1 (16:51):
Stay tuned. We'll be right back. All right, let's talk
about this because we we we you know, I just
saw your I g the food g page, go give
you your you know, we know what you're doing off the field.
You eating, You're trying to put away you know what
I'm saying you You got to chef your around. So
so tell me about your your your food?

Speaker 2 (17:11):
What is it?

Speaker 3 (17:11):
Glob with grand with Grando.

Speaker 2 (17:13):
So you know, like I said, I hired a chef
this off season, Chef Taste of Chef ass On. I
g so check her out. She's uh, this is the
Native Actually you said what she she paid for the
for the plugs.

Speaker 3 (17:29):
I see what you know.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
I'm just trying to put her in a position to win,
like I like helping my people out. So you know
I'm I'm trying to get her out there. So if
somebody else want to compare more to come work, you know,
go have at it. You know what I'm saying, But
then leave me right why I am You know I'm
gonna be all right. I just want I want, I
want you want her to be here?

Speaker 1 (17:52):
Grab with Grando.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
Back to it Today, I got a new I glub

Speaker 2 (18:09):
You're gonna see personality, some good food, homemade cooking. I
got a couple of restaurants out there. You know I'm
gonna be trying, so go check it out.

Speaker 1 (18:18):
And looking like bro Man from The Fifth Flow.

Speaker 2 (18:22):
Yeah, I got it, So I ain't gonna lie I didn't.

Speaker 3 (18:27):
I'm eating real good right now.

Speaker 2 (18:28):
So I just want to experience and show you guys,
you know, a day in my life of Grando M
So I gotta check me out. It's it's some some
good finger looking food, some good sauce and homemade cooking sauce, Sacramento.

Speaker 1 (18:43):
You don't know nothing about finger looking food. You was
in Wyoming, the home of no seasonings.

Speaker 3 (18:49):
The home.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
Hey look, when I was in Wyoming, the only thing
we had there was Chili's, Chili's and Applebee's.

Speaker 3 (19:00):
Two for twenty going crazy twenty five.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
If you want to get a stake to go with it. Yeah,
and so now you're knowing it. Now you got all
this flavor. You're like, let me, let me save it
a flavor. Push push this food.

Speaker 3 (19:10):
That's what that's to.

Speaker 2 (19:12):
Put some people. Push some food and uh more sweeter
and more completed. So yeah, man, just go check me
out glub with grand.

Speaker 1 (19:19):
I love it all right now, I got you here
on camera. I need to know. On our d line,
we have a suit game. Once a year, we got
a suit game. It's like every year we come in
with some you know and I want to see your personality.
I want to see your style, your flair. We as
a collective, we come together as a D line and like, hey,
this game, this year suit game. And there's been times

(19:42):
where guys don't fit the part, or they look like
they don't know how to iron, or you find out
who doesn't know how to tie the tie, or who
doesn't know how to put colors together because they come
in a hot mess, or whose uncle's suit they got on.
I just want to know, beyond that, who is our
best dress D lineing weekend week out? We're not even
asked about the suit because we in the week out
because I know I got that, I got the best

(20:03):
suits in the game.

Speaker 3 (20:03):
But like you gotta be humble, I'm gonna say this.

Speaker 1 (20:10):
Weekend week out, Grando.

Speaker 2 (20:11):
I'm gonna say this, Look, I came a long ways
that I came a long ways, you know, rookie year.

Speaker 3 (20:20):
I had, I had my rookie I said I had
some suits. Now I got some stuff.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
So the best overall, like best dress suits.

Speaker 1 (20:32):
Just best dress weekend week out.

Speaker 3 (20:35):
Look, I'm gonna give it to you.

Speaker 1 (20:36):
Thank you.

Speaker 3 (20:37):
That's only because you've been around, You've been doing it
much longer.

Speaker 2 (20:42):
So you you know number two though, yeah that's me.
Take that's me, and then a Peyton turner.

Speaker 3 (20:52):
Number three, I'm gonna give it to Petka and really that's.

Speaker 1 (20:56):
Then it's a drop off.

Speaker 3 (20:58):
I mean to come in.

Speaker 2 (21:01):
He got some you know, some some stuff from overseas,
so the Motherland, swaggy stuff, so yeah, I'm gonna put
those and then the rest they know what's up. But
I'm in there for if it's gonna be a competition,
it's gonna be me.

Speaker 3 (21:17):
And you you know, I got some stuff this year,
so whatever.

Speaker 2 (21:20):
