Speaker 1 (00:07):
Welcome to a new week of The Insiders. Here's your
Monday edition. Judy Batista and Ian Rapaport joining me. Mike Garofalo,
Jamal Williams Saints running back. You're always going to want
to see him when he's on camera, and he will
be coming up shortly. And Brown's general manager Andrew Berry
will join us. Or is it his twin brother Adam Berry.
We'll explain that one later in the show, but let's
(00:29):
get right to the news. Bengals wide receiver t Higgins,
he had a franchise tag placed on him back in March.
He has now officially signed that tender. It is a
one year contract worth twenty one point eight million dollars.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
It is fully guaranteed.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
It is not a long term deal that is what
Higgins was looking for. Does not seem like that is
in the offing in the near future, But at the
very least the Bengals know, Judy they're going to have
their wide receiver for the start of training camp.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Yeah, it seemed inevitable really, from the minute that the
franchise tag window opened. They put the tag on him
about as quickly as a team could do it. It
doesn't appear that a long term contract is in the
off thing right now, because it certainly appears they want
to work on Jamar Chase first. They want to keep
the band together though for another season never seemed like
they were going to trade him. They want to make
(01:21):
another run for it, and then we will see what
happens next offseason. But in the meantime t Higgins back
with the Bengals, they will have Burrow and Jamar Chase.
This is what happens when teams have young players and
they play really well. Everybody wants to get paid and
everybody cannot get paid at the same time.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
That's exactly right.
Speaker 5 (01:41):
This is why it's really hard to keep really good
championship teams together because the great players want a lot
of money. And this feels significant for t Higgins obviously,
as Mike mentioned, wanted that long term deal. The fact
that he signed his franchise Tag Laxman one year fully
guaranteed means he's going to show up to training camp.
Had he not, he could have stayed away, arrived whenever
(02:02):
he wanted, just would have got paid essentially for the
games that he played. Now he is under contract like
every other player, and my understanding guys. The situation here
is it is considered unlikely that T. Higgins will end
up getting the long term extension that he wants, and
he saw all of the receivers, all his brethren, get
paid right before him. All this does is just raise
(02:25):
the bar and raise the bar for when Higgins eventually
gets paid, perhaps in free agency next year.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
T Higgins agent David Mullageta had Jesse Bates a franchise
tag safety for the Bengals, so he's been through this
dance with Cincinnati before wound up getting Baits paid in
free agency.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
To head to Atlanta.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
This could happen with Higgins as well elsewhere on the
wide receiver. I don't want to call out the market
because he's not on the market. Brandon Ayuk is under contract.
Will he get a contract extension? He's been looking for
one from the forty nine ers, we've been trying to
get one done. Here's Ayuk though, talking to his longtime
friend and former ASU teammate Jade and Daniels, quarterback of
(03:02):
the Commanders.
Speaker 6 (03:07):
Camp bro.
Speaker 7 (03:09):
Cam.
Speaker 4 (03:14):
He got me vlogging me.
Speaker 8 (03:16):
What they said.
Speaker 7 (03:19):
They said they don't want me bad the Sun.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Jayden Daniels very excited because he's saying, let's.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
Go now and trade for Brandon. I give him the
long term deal he's looking for.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
I would put a little asterisk on the end of that.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Sorry to be uh the spoiler here, Ian as I
throw it to you.
Speaker 9 (03:40):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
The Uniteds do want him back, they just don't want
him back at the number that he wants.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Right now, they are still apart.
Speaker 5 (03:46):
My first reaction to this, seeing it was on TikTok,
was like, wow, who filmed this and posted it? But
it was literally Brandon Ayuk who filmed it himself. I
don't know if he was actually doing the filming, but
he certainly did the posting, clearly sending a message to
his former team and maybe everyone that in his mind,
the forty nine ers don't want it, but they do
want him.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
They just want him at their price.
Speaker 5 (04:08):
It is not a negotiation to my knowledge, that has
been completely dead. They just have not done a deal yet.
And it's pretty clear that Brendan nu Yuk wants the
kind of money that aman Ra Saint Brown ended up
making about twenty eight million dollars average over the first
three years of his deal. The forty nine Ers are
not there yet. They like him, they really like him.
They just have not been able to come together on
a deal. So maybe that's kind of the feeling that
(04:31):
Brendan nu Yuk was trying to give out.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
You know.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
He also when he posted this, he said, I'm laughing,
but I'm really crying or crying really laughing something like that.
Negotiations can include sharp elbows, right like feelings get hurt.
Things are said in negotiations. Teams want players at the
price they want them at. It doesn't, as you said,
they want him. They just want him at a price
(04:56):
that it does not meet the price that he wants
to get. As we had said before, the market for
wide receivers has exploded. He obviously has a number in mind.
The Niners have a different number in mind. It doesn't
mean a deal cannot get done. We had set it
over and over again. The Niners have been comfortable in
the past letting their superstar negotiations go all the way
(05:18):
through the summer.
Speaker 6 (05:19):
So stay tuned.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
I should add also another connection in Washington. Adam Peters
with with San Francisco now the general manager in Washington.
So you start to put the pieces together and say
that could be a destination for.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Him, but it could have been a destination a while ago.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
The Niners have never had any fruitful trade talks with
any other teams. Again, like you said, I and these negotiations,
they are not dead, but at some point we got
to figure out are these sides going to move together
moving forward or do they have to go.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Their separate way? Ian beat it a second.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
I'm going to bring in Jane Slater here to join
me and Judy because we want to talk another wide receive.
We got a wide receiver thing happening here. If you
haven't figured out the theme, So Jane get in here.
Let's talk about Cedee Lamb, who is not at present
for mandatory minichamp and obviously wants his own lucrative contract extension.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Where do we stand on that one?
Speaker 10 (06:08):
I feel like it can almost just roll the tape
back from your segment on Brandon A Yok and say
all of those points also apply here to Ceedee Lamb.
Like Judy said, they want him here, but maybe not
necessarily at the number that Ceede Lamb and his agent
are looking for. We'll see how this thing shakes out
throughout the summer. You know, as you said, he wasn't here.
They were able to get the two Jalens involved, the
(06:30):
Jalen Tolbert and the Jalen Brooks. Well, I'm old enough
to remember when they didn't think that Ceedee Lamb.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
Was the guy.
Speaker 10 (06:36):
Remember, guys, we were talking about OBJ and the sweepstakes
to bring him to Dallas. After that discussion, I remember
it very vividly. It was right around when they were
getting ready to play Green Bay. Remember that was Mike
McCarthy's first game back. All of a sudden, CD stepped
out as a bona fide one, and I think a
lot of people could argue that he is in line
with some of these receivers that are getting paid this summer.
(06:56):
A lot of agents I've talked to have said he's
going to be a little bit below just and Jefferson,
and things have gotten contentious as it relates to, you know, Judy,
bring us up.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
It is a business.
Speaker 10 (07:06):
There hasn't been a lot of tough talking on either
side though. I thought that's everyone's been kind of respectable
on this one.
Speaker 4 (07:12):
But we'll see if this gets done.
Speaker 10 (07:13):
Closer to camp, typically they do.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
Well.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
This is a little bit more complicated because the Cowboys
have a whole lot of contract issues to deal with.
Dak Prescott also, and of course the quarterback market has
also exploded, so they're going to have to prioritize what
comes first, Dak, CD Michael Parsons, which way do you go?
And in the meantime, CD Lamb is sitting there and
again watching each wide receiver contract go up, up, up,
(07:38):
makes it harder and harder to get these guys under contract.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
Davie running running back.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
Sorry, the vision in the wide receiver room, the running
back room, Gead take it?
Speaker 2 (07:49):
You got?
Speaker 10 (07:51):
Yeah, the running backs thing. I wanted to jump in here. Guys,
as we're talking about sort of the uncertainty of CD Lamb,
how about the uncertainty of the starter at running back.
They keep talking this to be a running back by committee. Well,
the last time in Dallas we saw the true running
backs by committee was the year I was born. No,
let's go back to nineteen eighty when they had you know,
guys like Tony Dorset, New House, Ron Springs. Any of
(08:12):
those names sound familiar to our younger audience, Probably only
Tony Dorset. The point I'm trying to make here is
they sorted did this running backs by committee thing last
year didn't work. Now Ezekiel Elliott went to New England.
He was splitting the roll up there, took over the
starting position at the end of the summer. I still
think he's going to be your lead back.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
I just don't think they're.
Speaker 10 (08:31):
Going to be asking him to do as much as
they did.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
In the past.
Speaker 10 (08:33):
But they've got a number of guys on the roster
right now, Royce Freeman, I got to use my notes
ric O'donald Doucevawan Hunter, Lepkey, Malink Davis Snoop Connor, and
then they added Nathaniel Peene. So as many as seven
here they're going to be battling out at camp. Certainly,
what we're going to be talking about a lot as
we have itc.
Speaker 11 (08:49):
Come to you.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
Shout out class. In nineteen eighty it was a great
year to be born, Ain't that right? Ian Rappaport, Yes,
it was.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
As a matter of fact, that's when I was born.
Did you know that anyway?
Speaker 5 (09:03):
I think Tua Tamo was born maybe a little bit
later as a young man, unlike my old self.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
Let's turn our attention go from.
Speaker 5 (09:10):
Dallas all the way to Miami and welcome in a
couple of my buddies. Cameron Wolfu is of course based
in Miami and very very in tune with everything that's
going on with the Dolphins. And then Mark Ross joining
us from parts unknown with that very very colorful shirt.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
He is our front office expert.
Speaker 5 (09:28):
I want to go from the big contract that Ceedee
Lamb has wanted and has not yet gotten to Tua,
talk about Lola Cammon and obviously this has been a
storyline we've been discussing the last several months. We saw
last week Trevor Lawrence got paid fifty five million.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
Dollars per year, So then we got to ask about Tua.
What is the latest on his situation.
Speaker 12 (09:51):
Yeah, and the Dolphins in Tuatungue of Bilo's agent Ryan Williams,
continue to discuss a long term deal. Nothing done yet,
but I'm told it's the dolphins number one PROBA and
there's still a hope from both sides to get a
deal before the start of the regular season. But seeing
quarterbacks like Jared Golf and Trevor Lawrence get those huge
fifty three to fifty five million dollars a year and
new money deals only adds to the urgency. The last
(10:13):
time we spoke to to a couple of weeks ago
at Dolphins Mini camp, he struggled to find a word
to describe his emotions before settling on antsy, and he
also said the market is the market in regards to
golf's extension, well to us, probably the most polarizing quarterback
I've ever covered in terms of public opinion, but his
numbers tell the story.
Speaker 6 (10:31):
He played all.
Speaker 12 (10:32):
Eighteen games last year, staying healthy, let the NFL in passing,
led Miami to a number one passing offense. Really, he's
in the market as far as stats of the golf
and the lawrences. The next mark is training camp six
weeks away. It was notable that he did practice during
the spring, but didn't do eleven on eleven drills. If
it's not done by then does that continue into training camp.
(10:53):
All of Miami's star players have been vocal to it
needs to be claid, including Tyreek Hill, and so I
don't think there's any concerned from what I hear, But
ultimately they have to get this deal done, and I
think they will before they start of seeing.
Speaker 11 (11:07):
One hundred percent agree with you that they have to
get done, and they will get it done.
Speaker 13 (11:11):
And despite all the consternation and polarizing opinions about Tua.
Whoever the next quarterback up is, they get paid and
it doesn't matter if you're better than this guy or
that guy. Unlike we were, what we're seeing in the
wide receiver market where there still is a little bit
of that, well, what is the true value with the quarterback?
Speaker 11 (11:31):
It's just the next guy up. It's just like going
to pay gas for your car.
Speaker 13 (11:35):
Whatever the price is, you're going to pay it. You
may complain, but you're going to put gas in your car.
And I was a part of in twenty fifteen talking
about a polarizing quarterback with Eli Manning. We gave him
that four year, eighty four billion dollar extension at the
time that twenty one million dollars a year hide Aaron
Rodgers for an NFL record, And of course people were saying, well,
(11:55):
Eli's not as good as Aaron Rodgers, why are you
paying him?
Speaker 11 (11:58):
But on front edge of what.
Speaker 13 (12:01):
The trend is now e and of if you got
a guy, you gotta pay the guide because if you
don't pay him, then where do you go.
Speaker 11 (12:08):
So that's where it is right now with the quarterback market.
Speaker 13 (12:10):
And I'm in Dunnet North Carolina at my niece's house,
an old Confederate soldier's house.
Speaker 11 (12:15):
This was on the wall when she bought the house.
Is i'tle two three hundred years?
Speaker 13 (12:18):
Well, I don't know how old this house is, but
it's old, it's beautiful, and it's historic, and it's my
niece Jerry and done, North Carolina.
Speaker 11 (12:24):
Anyone wanted to visit.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Well, that was very heartwarming.
Speaker 5 (12:28):
The shirt much more cold for than that painting behind you,
but still very lovely. Uh Mark caam, thank you very much.
We learned today that Hard Knocks the inn season version
going to feature the AFC North. We will tell you
what the most intriguing storyline in that division is coming
the next.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
And now's on Monday.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
Yes, that makes it newday the Hard Knocks in season now.
The NFL had said it's going to be a division
that they're going to follow for the in season Hard Knocks,
and they announced today it will be the AFC North. Ravens, Bengals, Browns, Steelers,
some legendary franchises and some good storylines to follow in there.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
Get your Hard Knocks straight.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
You got the Giants offseason, you got the Bears training camp,
you got the AFC North in season, it's like CSI
New York, that was Gary Sinie, CSI Miami that was
David Caruso. Vegas was Ted Danson at some point. Anyway, Judy,
let's talk about the AFC North and what storyline you're
looking forward to here with hard knocks in season.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
Well, every one of these teams has a star quarterback.
But I am going to be watching, especially the Pittsburgh
Steelers who have two star quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
And how that plays out.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
Obviously Russell Wilson and justin Fields. What will this look
like in season? What's it going to look like at
the start of the sea Might they make a change?
There's going to be so much interest in that quarterback
situation in that room, whether there is a change at
quarterback at any point in the season, whether Russell Wilson
resurrects his career in Pittsburgh, There's going to be a
lot of intrigue with that one.
Speaker 14 (14:14):
When we think about these guys in the Pittsburgh steel
Is in the quarterback situation that they have.
Speaker 6 (14:19):
I want to stay in the AFC North and talk.
Speaker 14 (14:21):
About in Cleveland, Deshaun Wasson, Deshaun Watson signs that blockbuster deal,
a mega deal to come over to really end the
quarterback roles in Cleveland. And look, he hasn't been available
twelve games eighty for a record, which is great, but
a sub sixty percent passer, fourteen touchdowns, nine interceptions. You
just don't know what you're going to get from a
player that played at a pro Bowl level in Houston,
(14:43):
was celebrated as a top five pick. At some point,
the Cleveland Browns need to know which Deshaun Wasson is
going to show up, the one they used to put
it down in agehown, the one that got him excited,
the one that could get this team to a super Bowl,
or whether they get the middling mint Deshaun Watson. It
hasn't been available and hasn't played at a high level.
Keva Savanski has to know because all oz on Deshaun Watson,
(15:05):
because as he.
Speaker 6 (15:06):
Goes, so goes to Brown super Bowl hopes.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
I just think there's great personalities in this one. The
Browns will start there, Bucky David and Joe.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
Ku, Miles Garrett.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
You go to Pittsburgh Russell Wilson, even if it's not
your cup of tea, you want to watch him and
see if there's anything that you could potentially make fun
of there Cincinnati, He's got some personalities in the receiver
room in Baltimore. Lamar Jackson at Derek Henry to the mix.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
It's going to be a.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
Great cast of characters for Hard Knocks in season AFC North.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
Speaking of characters, we've got.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
Jamal Williams Saints running back coming up. You are not
going to want to miss this interview. We start talking legos, Yeah,
we start talking legos.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Then we take it elsewhere.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
Here you go, got Jamal Williams Saints running back with
the pink cleats. He's rocking there and the promotional shot
on these safe X account right there. My man looks
season ready except for the you know, lack of a helmet.
We'll get him a helmet before the season. Got a
sweet lid right now, you got a little Pokemon action.
He's a big Pokemon guy.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
He's got some.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
Legos going on right now. While he was waiting to
be brought out this interview, what happened with the legos.
Speaker 7 (16:20):
I'm still working on my boys head right now. But
his group slash venom, so I'm working on it right now.
But the head, Yeah, I'm still.
Speaker 6 (16:30):
Yeah, I'm working.
Speaker 7 (16:31):
You know who Brute is, right, I am Group Guardian
of the Galaxy.
Speaker 6 (16:36):
Oh I do know Brute.
Speaker 2 (16:37):
Okay, so yeah, well I went on.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
I went on the Guardians and the Galaxy ride with
my daughter, showing my age.
Speaker 9 (16:46):
He was there.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
It's a great ride. If you ever get down to Epcot,
go check that out.
Speaker 6 (16:50):
You know what.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
That leads me to my first.
Speaker 1 (16:51):
Question, because Jamal Williams, you are an entertaining guy.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
I know that brain is always going.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
How do you spend this downtime now before training camp because.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
I know it's gonna be.
Speaker 7 (17:01):
Oh yeah, training gam is gonna be great, man, I
literally would be. I'll be thinking about it now like
year eight, and I'm just like so grateful and humbled
to be where I'm at right now. So it's just
like I just take this opportunity and break to breathe
and though that like it's gonna be great.
Speaker 6 (17:16):
I love what I'm doing.
Speaker 9 (17:17):
I'm humble to do what I'm grateful, grateful.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
To be doing.
Speaker 7 (17:20):
I got my daughter with me, so we really just
been chilling, enjoying the time. Before you know, things get
hected and I gotta lock in, you know, what.
Speaker 12 (17:27):
I mean.
Speaker 6 (17:30):
Tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (17:30):
You're also doing a little work for us the player's choice.
You've taken over NFL Network today with your programs, your
games of choice. I'm perusing the less There's some fun
ones on there, a couple of big time performances from
you taking down Arrival on another one. Here's the question
I had you had the football life Aaron Jones on
(17:51):
there now when you guys were teammates. I kind of thought,
maybe naively, that you guys would be sort of like
competitive or maybe like frontemies, but you're actually really friends
and you really did.
Speaker 4 (18:03):
When you were teammates support each other. Was that something
that came natural?
Speaker 5 (18:08):
Do you have to work at that because you're in
sort of a running back by committee deal in New
Orleans too, Like, how do you handle those types of situations?
Speaker 7 (18:16):
Well, I've always been just a team first type of
person in my positivity, and I just try to bring
great energy inside of the team, and especially in a
running back position where we always know it's always literally
most of the time, there's just one running back in there,
so we take it as we get it. But you
take your opportunities as they come. But with Aaron and
when we came in together, we both got drafted together,
(18:38):
we had both had the same agent at the same time,
and we still do now. But it's just like we
grow up together, and the positivity and the competitive enough
that we both had for each other.
Speaker 9 (18:50):
It was just on the field, like we're rooting for
each other.
Speaker 7 (18:52):
We learned from each other's mistakes and experiences on the field,
and we're helping each other, and it's just it was
just a great.
Speaker 6 (18:59):
Time being out.
Speaker 9 (19:00):
He's just a great dude.
Speaker 7 (19:01):
His manners is wonderful, Like the first time I meeting him,
you know, just being around him, how he talks to people. Yes, sir, No, sir,
you know what I mean. He just he was raised right,
He had two parent household, like they raised it. And
I'm just proud of that his parents for just how
they raised him.
Speaker 9 (19:17):
So it's just I'm just.
Speaker 7 (19:18):
Grateful of having him as a teammate for so long
and then for our relationships will still be going now.
I'm grateful for him, Like his family is my family.
We stay together, we do as much as we can,
but it's just we just have love for each other,
and it's just grateful that, Like it's not that type
of situation that you come into into the league you
think you'll have with somebody who you're competing for a spot.
(19:40):
You know what I mean, especially as rookies. You know
your mind is a rookie like, I gotta make it.
Speaker 6 (19:45):
I'm thinking of just me. I gotta make you.
Speaker 9 (19:47):
I gotta do everything I do.
Speaker 6 (19:48):
I gotta beat that dude, you know.
Speaker 7 (19:49):
But for us, it was more of just we can
help each other and still be out here and be
successful for each other. And know that like all the energy,
all the successfulness, all the blessings can happened to everybody
if you give it out there, you could You could
still be successful and help others while doing it, you
know what I mean. So just keep just keep being positive,
is what I learned from him.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
Did you help him this offseason because you've been to
two other teams since you played for the Packers. He's
now in Minnesota. It's a new place for him. Did
he lean on you at all about playing for a
different team? And how fired up is he?
Speaker 2 (20:23):
He's still in the division? Double revenge?
Speaker 6 (20:26):
I know, Look, he get that, he get that.
Speaker 9 (20:29):
That was motivation thing that chimp on the soda boy,
it's a good one.
Speaker 12 (20:32):
Too.
Speaker 9 (20:32):
It's a good one to have because like it gives
you that accent and.
Speaker 6 (20:36):
You do it for me.
Speaker 7 (20:36):
I don't even I wasn't even thinking about it yet
until I actually hit the field, and I was like,
especially that once I was in like the last game
of Lambo, just running again into the film, like I'm back,
I'm back where I started again. It's time to get
loose again, Like it'll it'll hit me to I'm on
the field and like I'm really self motivated. I can
find I'm like Bobby Bouchet. I'll be just making imagery
(20:59):
of just anybody on the field.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
So this is a great day.
Speaker 9 (21:04):
But Aaron he got it, man, He just he's just
a great vet. He learns.
Speaker 6 (21:07):
He's not too He's not. He'll always learn from somebody.
Speaker 11 (21:12):
He's not.
Speaker 9 (21:12):
He's not errant enough to think he knows everything.
Speaker 7 (21:14):
And at the same time, Aaron knows so much right
now and what got him to where he's at now,
and being a professional is what he's going to keep doing.
Speaker 11 (21:22):
So wherever you go.
Speaker 7 (21:23):
And I'm mad too, because literally, like every time I
every time I left, the team had the new jersey
or they just showing a new jersey.
Speaker 6 (21:30):
I was never there for it, I tell you. But
he gets to the Minnesota, they got the all whites.
Speaker 7 (21:35):
I'm like, you get the new Jersey. Oh my god,
I'm jealous. But he looked good at that all white though.
I just I can't wait to see how you do.
I'm wishing nothing but blessings for him too. He know
he will always be my boy, and I'm just always
wishing for him to do great things.
Speaker 5 (21:52):
Jamal, by the way, I said today you're taking over
to actually tomorrow, So five yard penalty on me, my bad.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
Another day to think about it.
Speaker 5 (22:02):
Yeah, I did think about they even though you're Aready said,
all right, I want to ask you about another running
back in New Orleans for Saints Mini camp.
Speaker 4 (22:11):
Alvin Kamara had.
Speaker 5 (22:13):
I guess a walk out sort of a holdout, sort
of a walkout the last day of mini camp, a
show of him taking a business side and saying, you
know what, I wanted a new contract. I want to
adjust the deal. You have been through all sorts of
situations in the NFL. First of all, what do you
think of this situation? And then how how do the
rest of the guys see when someone like Alvin does
(22:35):
something like that.
Speaker 6 (22:38):
Me personally, just as me as a man.
Speaker 7 (22:40):
I respect everybody as the man they are and decisions
they make as a man. So whatever they do is
up to them and me at all times I support
them and whatever they do because I just love them
for them and who they are.
Speaker 11 (22:52):
As a person.
Speaker 7 (22:53):
And Alvin is the tremendous, great teammate, awesome person, one
hundred percent. He stayed ten toes down on his business
and what he believes in and that's just him. So
it's just I'm behind him on under saying.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
What he does.
Speaker 7 (23:06):
And that's just because he's looking for his well being
and that's what all we want for each other and
so for but for our teammates and all we we
know what it is.
Speaker 6 (23:14):
We know that it's just business.
Speaker 7 (23:15):
And at the same time, we still got to keep
pushing and doing what we need to do for ourselves
to make sure that the team is good.
Speaker 6 (23:21):
So the best thing that we can do for the.
Speaker 7 (23:23):
Team is just keep pushing and doing the best thing
we can do is just keep making ourselves better for
the team. And then you know, praying for our brother,
make sure he's great. Nothing but blessings, Like it's just
it's no hard feelings like it's just we're.
Speaker 9 (23:36):
Playing a game that we love.
Speaker 6 (23:38):
It's just part of the game that we do.
Speaker 7 (23:40):
And these are the type of things once you believe
in something you believe in, and I'm with you one
hundred percent, that's that's your decision.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
So clink Kubiak in the house.
Speaker 1 (23:49):
Your new offensive coordinator comes over from the San Francisco
forty nine ers.
Speaker 8 (23:53):
Tell me what.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
Tell me what this I can hear the excitement. Tell
me what this offense is going to look like in
twenty four.
Speaker 9 (24:00):
Let me tell you something.
Speaker 6 (24:01):
I've been watching it.
Speaker 7 (24:02):
When I was watching it, freaking feel or oh my gosh,
what I want to feel because I.
Speaker 6 (24:07):
Was like, I'm like, why have I seen this before?
Speaker 7 (24:11):
Because I because I'm on the other side on the
sideline watching it, right.
Speaker 6 (24:15):
He go crazy and I'm like, why is he running
like this? Why is he going crazy?
Speaker 9 (24:22):
At the time like this is this type of game?
Speaker 7 (24:25):
Why? I was like, Oh, but then but now that
I know that our boys here, now, oh, I got
me so excited. It just gives me because I already
know what type of mentality it is because I've seen
it from the other.
Speaker 6 (24:37):
Side of just be like, what is happening right now.
Speaker 7 (24:41):
And that's all like I've seen it before and in person,
so I'm ready to just be on the other side
of that and get the calls on this side.
Speaker 9 (24:49):
Man, it's gonna be great.
Speaker 6 (24:53):
Do you wake up like this?
Speaker 2 (24:54):
I mean like I need five minutes in the morning, Like,
give me five minutes. There are you shot out of
account just like this? This came on.
Speaker 7 (25:01):
Nah, in the mornings, I'm worse in the mornings. In
the mornings, I got real rbl face. You gotta give
me a minute, Like I say, good morning, I'll literally
be like, dude, good morning.
Speaker 15 (25:12):
How you doing.
Speaker 7 (25:12):
Hope you're having a great day, all right, Like I
literally say all of that while I'm walking because I
got it.
Speaker 6 (25:18):
I got stuff to do.
Speaker 7 (25:19):
You know, you know you'll be able to time schedule,
so you just be like, I got to hurry up,
make sure I go, yeah, get in this oct to
make sure i'm warm.
Speaker 9 (25:27):
Practice.
Speaker 7 (25:27):
Yeah, so it's just they give me me. But once
I get the practice, oh I'm.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
Locked in and you hit the ground.
Speaker 6 (25:33):
Let's get to it. Yeah, yeah, we do. I know.
I know.
Speaker 1 (25:37):
Even today, you've got stuff to do, like change that
smoke alarm battery Uh. We did an interview with a
couple of years ago, Rachelle McCoy.
Speaker 2 (25:44):
Had it going on. It must be a running back thing. Anyway,
Speaking of running.
Speaker 6 (25:48):
Back, I think it's an environment thing.
Speaker 7 (25:51):
Is I'm just I'm just a I'm just a what's
it called a sample of my environment from growing up?
Speaker 1 (25:59):
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, I think
is what you were going for there. But you're the
running back tree. I'm trying to make this transition here
it is Jamal Willis playing.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
Now this is tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (26:10):
Ian.
Speaker 2 (26:10):
You got to reset your DV instead it for today.
It's tomorrow. Tell us about the selections of these programs
that you chose.
Speaker 7 (26:18):
All right, man, got b Sanders, Man, I just had
to give respect to I really try to give respect
to the places that I've been to and from the
people that I've held daily to my heart.
Speaker 9 (26:29):
So just as me being a running back, so B
Sanders for you know, Detroit got to let him in there.
Walter Payton was always one of my favorites.
Speaker 7 (26:37):
I just love his work, ethic in the off season,
and just how he handles business and everything. Eric Dickerson
of course, just because you know rams baby.
Speaker 6 (26:45):
But the Zail.
Speaker 9 (26:46):
I just loved the way he was running at day.
He was just a strider.
Speaker 7 (26:50):
And then you know, I had to put Jerome Benness
on there just because big bus man man. I like
big backs, and I just like big backs with sweet feet,
and he was definitely going out there and giving the pain,
letting them know every time you tackle me, you're gonna
feel it. And so and then you know, I always
got I gotta put the you know, I got to
put the one on there and me crying, I guess
I just like that game. It was just a good
(27:11):
just a good way for me to just finish my
season off, especially for my great grandparents and really just
feel like I solidified for them.
Speaker 6 (27:20):
Just a good season on how to be a man, how.
Speaker 7 (27:22):
I handle my adversities that year and just just keep
trying to just be the best me and understand, you know,
things happen, but we can get through them as long
as we stay positive. No, we got great loved ones
around us, you know, and keep the positivity around you.
Speaker 4 (27:37):
So well, that is a great list. I enjoyed that.
I like big backs, and I cannot lie. I think
they should make it something I love.
Speaker 7 (27:49):
I love fullbacks and blocking tight ends too.
Speaker 9 (27:51):
Please let them know that too.
Speaker 6 (27:52):
I love them.
Speaker 5 (27:54):
I will spread the word. Jamal, thank you so much
for hanging out with us and the insiders. Looking very
forward to your player's choice takeover of NFL Network tomorrow
and have an awesome offseason.
Speaker 6 (28:06):
We will see you in.
Speaker 4 (28:07):
California actually for training camp and who knows after that.
Speaker 7 (28:10):
Oh yeah, we're gonna be real breezy out there. Kelly again, Baby,
I'm coming home, Donald Dine and it is the same
way back.
Speaker 9 (28:17):
Hey, we come it home.
Speaker 6 (28:22):
You'll be good man, that's good.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
Blesses, awesome man. Thank you for joining us. I hope
to see us soon.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
All right, Andrew Berry, you gotta follow that right there.
Speaker 2 (28:32):
The Browns general manager joining us next.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
It's a contrasting styles, but it'll be informative and entertaining
as well. The Cleveland Browns wrapping up mini camp just
a short while ago. Eleven and six, last season a
playoff berth toughest strength to schedule right there. If you
(28:57):
look at last year's winning percent, it is for the
teams that they are facing. But that's not going to
scare the guy that's joining us right now, because it's
the NFL and the schedule is always tough.
Speaker 2 (29:06):
Isn't that correct.
Speaker 1 (29:07):
Cleveland Brown's general manager Andrew Berry joining us. He is
live from the Azzie Newsome General Manager Forum, which is
happening in Los Angeles, representing the NFL's commitment to developing
a diverse and inclusive workforce and providing opportunities for minority candidates. Andrew,
we appreciate you taking your time to spend with us here.
(29:27):
Tell us what's going on out there in LA with
this forum.
Speaker 8 (29:30):
First of all, appreciate you guys, you know, having me
on today with the Osse Newsom General Manager Forum. It's
a really a time where we're able to gather a
number of talented minority executives from around the league from
different disciplines player personnel, football operations, football administration, research and strategy,
(29:52):
and really it's about sharing collective wisdom with experienced gms
other people in senior roles to to share best practices
and also just kind of build a build a stronger
network across the league. So it's it's been a great,
you know, morning session so far. Looking forward to a
nice productive afternoon. But just a lot of talented people,
(30:13):
you know out here on the West Coast.
Speaker 3 (30:16):
Well, before we let you get back to the summit,
we wanted to talk to you about your team. You
just wrapped up mini camp. Deshaun Watson was out there
and throwing. He was on a bit of a pitch
count and he hasn't been fully cleared as far as
we know heading into training camp. Where is he in
his progress returning from the injury and how has he
(30:37):
looked so.
Speaker 9 (30:37):
Far to you?
Speaker 8 (30:39):
Yeah, Judy, you know, first and foremost, DeShawn has really
worked his tail off, you know, during the rehabilitation process
over the past several months. He's really actually ahead of schedule.
He he's really chomping at the bit uh to take
the governor off, so to speak. But really he's had
a he's had a really nice spring. He's thrown the
ball well, did a really nice job during our seven
(31:03):
on seven and team periods during this veteran mini camp.
So we're excited as he gets into training camp and
we get the pads on. But he's making excellent progress.
And honestly, if you didn't know he got hurt last year,
you really wouldn't be able to tell the difference. So
we're very excited on once camp starts.
Speaker 4 (31:22):
Andrew.
Speaker 5 (31:22):
A couple hours before you joined us, we got the
announcement from HBO and NFL Films, Hard Knocks is coming
to the not you guys only, but the AFC North,
So you and all your rivals in season debuts the
first week of December. First of all, how long have
you known this? And second of all, what did you
(31:43):
think the fact that it's not just you but all
of your rivals as well? Does that make it more
fun easier? Are you going to be tuning in maybe
more than you might have?
Speaker 8 (31:52):
You know, So, first of all, it's very exciting. I
think it's a pretty unique spin on a classic you know,
NFL series, and and honestly like it's it's it's an
honor and privilege to be among one of the four
teams that can be in this I guess this iteration
of of Hard Knocks. Even though we're rivals, I think
(32:14):
all four teams, all of us, hold an immense sense
of pride with the competitiveness in the AC North and
the rivalries that you you establish. I think it'll be
pretty cool to see what you know, we believe is
you know, a very unique uh you know division. I
can't say that I'll be necessarily tuned in every week
because usually by the time I get home, I'm I'm
(32:36):
a little.
Speaker 2 (32:36):
Bit footballed out, so to speak.
Speaker 8 (32:38):
But but it's gonna be a really great opportunity for
NFL fans and fans of aart of our four teams
to really engage with the organizations.
Speaker 1 (32:47):
Uh, you better not be footballed out because you're hanging
in this role for quite some time. You received a
contract extension recently. Congratulations on that. I would ask you
about the significance of that, but I know how humble
you are, You're probably not gonna want to talk much
about it.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
So I'll tell you what. I'm gonna give you an out.
Speaker 1 (33:02):
Why don't you talk about the other contract extension that
was announced that day, and that is your head coach,
Kevin Stefanski in the job that he's done to this point.
Speaker 11 (33:09):
All.
Speaker 8 (33:09):
Firstly, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate that
line of questioning Mike as opposed to the other. So,
first of all, Kevin is he It starts with Kevin's
just an outstanding person, like you know, two time Coach
of the Year. Let us to the playoffs too, you know,
to for two seasons. You know, we hadn't been there
in twenty years. He's managed and navigated a lot of adversity,
(33:31):
and so it's obvious he's an outstanding football coach, but
he really is an even better human being. And I
feel very, very blessed. You know that he's my primary
partner in the organization. You know, there's nothing that we
can't navigate together. He's great with our players, he's great
with the staff, and he defines the essence of leadership.
(33:55):
And one of the things I love the best about
him is he defines the essence of leadership, but he
does it in his own way. He's not necessarily this loud, boisterous,
big personality. But what he does, he's a master connector.
He builds authentic relationships with people in the organization from
top to bottom. He's smart as a whip, and he's
(34:16):
a problem for over he's a problem solver. And we're
in really, really great hands for the foreseeable future.
Speaker 3 (34:23):
All Right, we're going to stay on the contract theme
here and go with the contract. That's a little bit
in question. A Mari Cooper, who was not around in
the last few weeks. Obviously, once a contract, today's his birthday.
Happy birthday, A Marii Cooper. Where do things stand on
maybe the birthday present? A Marii Cooper would like most.
Speaker 8 (34:41):
Yeah, So you know, I'll say first and foremost, Judy.
It's the standard practice for me where I don't you know, comment,
you know, on contract specifics or discussions that we have
in our players in that in this realm, just because
I do think it's a it's a pretty deeply personal
manner for really anybody when you're talking about compensation. What
I will say about Amar though, is since he's been
(35:03):
a member of the Cleveland Browns, he's obviously been a
high level Pro Bowl calimber receiver, but he's also a
great teammate and he's a great professional, and we're happy
to have him as a member of the organization. You know, sometimes,
you know, all teams will have periods where they go
through these type of situations, but it does not change
our affinity for Amri. You know, we'll navigate, you know,
(35:27):
call it the business considerations and the business aspects as
as as it goes. But you know, he's gonna he
is a big part of our team, and just as importantly,
he's a big part of our culture.
Speaker 5 (35:38):
Andrew I was reading the comments from Nick Chubb when
he met with the media I think about a week
or so ago.
Speaker 4 (35:43):
One of the things that really struck me was he said,
you know, the.
Speaker 5 (35:46):
Browns could have essentially come you loose, could have just
said goodbye. And he really did have an appreciation I
think for how you guys handled this. His contractual situation
sounds like he's doing well. What went into this decision
to redo his contract and make sure that he feels
like he does?
Speaker 6 (36:04):
Honestly, Yeah, I think.
Speaker 8 (36:06):
First and foremost, when we look at any member of
our organization, it's it's important for us not to lose
sight of the fact that we're dealing with people. And
what happened to Nick last year was was was very unfortunate.
He had no desire to be anywhere besides Cleveland. We
(36:27):
had no desire for that to be you know, the
last snap that he would take in a Cleveland Browns jersey.
And just quite honestly, he's the heartbeating pulse of our
of our team. You know, he is a selfless individual.
Speaker 11 (36:41):
He works hard.
Speaker 8 (36:42):
He's obviously an outstanding ball career and outstanding running back.
And you know, I said this at the end of
the end of my end of season press conference. I
had a coming into the year, I had a respect
level for Nick Chubb it was a ten out of ten,
and exiting the season it was probably a twenty out
of ten. Because this was a person who came in
(37:02):
every day five point thirty a m doing his rehab, mortalities,
working as if he was preparing for Sunday. And I
think that says something you know about him individually and
as a professional. And you know, one of the moments
that we're all most looking forward to is the first
time he runs out of that home tunnel for his
(37:22):
debut in the twenty twenty four season. So we're we're
really excited to have him back and can't wait to
get going with him.
Speaker 1 (37:28):
Andrew Barry, before we let you go, a couple of
years ago, I'm in the airport after covering a Browns
game and here you come walking towards me in full
Brown's gear. You walk right by me as I go
to say hello, and I thought that was incredibly rude.
Turns out it was your twin brother, brother Adam Berry,
at the time working for Goldman Sex now in the
NFL on the fast track, vice President of Football Operations
(37:49):
and Strategy for the Eagles.
Speaker 2 (37:50):
A recent promotion. He's coming for you. He's on the
faster track.
Speaker 4 (37:54):
Man.
Speaker 8 (37:55):
I'm very proud of at him, Mike, and I know
he's in great hands, you know, with with honestly one
of my mentors in Howie Roseman. He is, he's a sponge.
He's incredibly smart. You know, he took a risk really
kind of changing careers mid stream and he's he's transitioned
(38:16):
pretty smoothly and quite nicely. And I'm really excited for
the what the future holds with him. And uh, you know,
when I'm not a you know, when I'm not in
Brown's business, I'm I'm an Eagles fan, you know, just
because i want to see him do well. And I'm
really excited about his progress.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
Apologies to the control room because I didn'tell him. I
was going to ask about that. They like to have
pictures of these people. It just he looks like that
as I was saying, it's easy.
Speaker 4 (38:41):
In this situation.
Speaker 2 (38:42):
It's easy in the situation. And Yourew Berry, thank you
very much.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
We appreciate everything you're doing out there at the Aussie
newsome GM.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
For for him and your time with us this afternoon.
Speaker 6 (38:51):
Now, thank you all for having me.
Speaker 8 (38:53):
You guys have a wonderful summer.
Speaker 1 (38:54):
Okay, And coming up next, who could break Calvin Johnson
single season receiving record?
Speaker 11 (39:02):
Can anybody do it?
Speaker 2 (39:03):
Bucky Brooks joins.
Speaker 1 (39:04):
Us with a list of five candidates that could potentially
get it done. Calvin Johnson back in twenty twelve nineteen
hundred sixty four receiving yards that remains the high watermark
for receiving yards in a single season.
Speaker 2 (39:22):
Tyreek Hill said last year he was going to break that.
Speaker 1 (39:24):
He was gonna get all the way to two thousand,
almost got there. Seventeen ninety nine, I believe was the number.
He got injured late in the season that the around him.
So we turned to Bucky Brooks. Mark Ross also with us,
but Bucky Brooks nfl dot Com backslash Scouts notebook if
you want to check out the full story. You've got
five receivers that could break Johnson's mark this year.
Speaker 14 (39:44):
Yeah, five receivers, And we talked about a hall of
more being able to get two thousand yards of something
that we just can't even imagine. If you think about
back in the day throwing it all over the yard.
But in today's time, it certainly can happen. I believe
there are few ingredients that are necessary to be able
to get it done. You have to be a number
one receiver, but you have to be able to do
it in an offense that may not have another playmaker
so you can get all of the targets. So the
(40:05):
names that are up at the top of the board
are the usual suspects. You have Tyreek Hill, you have
Justin Jefferson, Amarra Saint Brown as a slide receiver. But
the one that I really got a lot of pushback
on is George Pickens from the Pittsburgh Still this. How
can George Pickens get so many targets in so many yards? Well, look,
this guy averaged eighteen point one yards for Cats last year.
Last year they didn't even really have a quarterback that
(40:26):
could really throw him the football. Now you have Arthur
Smith coming over taking over an offense where you're gonna
have Russell Wilson being able to sling it all over
the yard.
Speaker 6 (40:33):
I just think it's set up with the run game.
Speaker 14 (40:36):
One on one opportunities for George Pickens could lead him
to be an egle to guy to push for two
thousand yards on the perimeter, even though they may not
thought it all over the yard.
Speaker 13 (40:45):
Bucky, got tremendous respect for your work. But just like
when I put my list out on NFL dot Com,
there's always going to be complaints. So I'm gonna be
a fan now and complain and say, where's cd Lamb.
Where's cdee Lamb on the list?
Speaker 6 (40:57):
Bucky?
Speaker 13 (40:57):
We talked about the situations that are and some of
those guys on your list, they've got shaky quarterback situations
and do have to share the rock.
Speaker 11 (41:06):
Well.
Speaker 13 (41:06):
Ceedee Lamb was second behind Tyreeka Hill last year. He
had seventeen forty nine yards and he's got Dak coming back.
Speaker 11 (41:13):
He's got that synergy with Dak.
Speaker 13 (41:15):
He's going to be newly paid, so he's going to
be extra motivated to prove that contract that he got.
And you talk about a situation and an offense that
highlights his skills. Ceedee Lamb since twoenty twenty has the
most yards in the slot and he led the league
in yards after catch last year. So when you've got
a guy that you know, put him in a slot
(41:37):
NonStop just getting the rock, he's gonna make yards. He's
going to break the record easily this year.
Speaker 11 (41:43):
He's a guy. Bucky got anybody go on that list?
Speaker 12 (41:46):
Wow?
Speaker 2 (41:46):
Are you rapping? Did you just start it rapping?
Speaker 15 (41:48):
There? Is that?
Speaker 2 (41:48):
What happened there?
Speaker 11 (41:49):
That's not my real life, bik.
Speaker 2 (41:51):
If you're like Mark.
Speaker 1 (41:52):
Ross and you like the poke holes and things, go
check out Bucky's article on nfl dot com backslash Scouts
Notebook to see his five guys and his reasoning for
those five guys. Thank you very much, Bucky Brooks Mark Ross.

Speaker 4 (42:20):
Go okay.
Speaker 5 (42:23):
So my son Max is turning eleven in July. Now
he is going to be a seven week sleep boy.
Came along with my other son Jude, so he didn't

us on Tuesday here in nfwork
