Speaker 1 (00:00):
The quartet from Anchorman to Will Ferrell, Steve Carrell, Dave Kepner,
Paul Rudd, Oilers number one, Rain Wilson here on the
Rich Eyes and Podcast? Is that is that the twelfth Man?
Have you been in that stadium? Your ears literally bleed?
They should hand out like ear tampons at LT Underscore
(00:22):
two one? Do you follow me on Twitter? I'm not
You're known for your lateral movement, but don't you leave
just yet? When you spoke to the commissioner Roger Roger,
the goods good. When he comes down the whole everyone
goes here comes comes a good, comes good, and he
(00:44):
is Vince Vaughn. How are you events? I gotta tell
you I did take David Wilson early in my fantasy draft.
Who else to train your fantasy team league? We called
a man's league? Rich uh NFL completely to yourself? Where
are we going? Jerry Jones? Did it? Houston Oilers number one?
(01:09):
Hello everyone, and thanks for joining us. I'm Richard Oisen.
I don't download many podcasts, but when I do, I
prefer Rich Eyes and Podcast? Is your host? Rich Ice? Hey,
everybody's training camp? Seat can Rich Eyes and calling you
(01:30):
from Renton? Washington, home of the defending champion Seattle Seahawks.
I am physically standing in the end zone of one
of their two practice facilities in this beautiful, beautiful suburb
of Seattle, Washington on a beautiful day. Uh my, my
two christs are back freezing there behind off in the
makeshift podcast studio in uh in the red zone studio
(01:53):
that's soon will soon be fired up. But right now
you're you're you're freezing your bush. You're touched your tushes
off in Hansonville. I don't know if it's a possible
rich but I think it's gotten colder since last week's episode. Yeah,
we had we had a third body in here, so
that point six was raising the overall room temperature. And
how you here it's coming down. Well, I've been accused
(02:16):
many times of phoning stuff in my career, but literally
I'm doing that right now acause I mean, we don't
have any I guess I could have been sitting on
Seahawks team camp and done some of this potentially, but
at any rate, I'm phoning in now. I'm standing on
the five yard line because I paced a lot, but
I'm in the midst of a three camp four day
tour to kick off training camp season. Um, I'm taping
(02:39):
this for taking. It's on a Friday, Um, of the
opening week of training camp. Is this the first ever
walk and talk in the history of the podcast? It
could be. It's certainly the first ever phone and walk
and talk I've ever done as hosting a show, I guess,
But um, um, yes. So the answer is this is
(03:00):
groundbreaking stuff for it was what was the impetus for
you because you don't normally go out to training camp? No,
I'm you know what I mean. It's a perfect story too.
I just when I first started on Sports Center back
in nineties six, right, and I was twenty six years old,
and everything was a joke. Everything was a gag, and
(03:21):
I would just sit up there on the set and
just you know, just kee off and just say whatever
I wanted to say, just because it was funny, Right,
That's what I did. And so I remember saying to
the powers that be there saying, I'd like to go
on the road. You know, I'd like to know after
having been on the Sports Center set for almost a year,
I'm like, you know, I'd like to now go out
(03:42):
on the road and see what it's like, you know,
it's been in ESPN Sports Center and going to these games,
and they sent me my first assignment on the road
for ESPN back in the day was I believe in
the Fall of seven could have been neither of the
Fall of ninety could have been just a few months
(04:03):
that I was on the air there and I went
to the old Boston Garden and the Celtics were hosting
the soon to be sixty win Seattle Sonics, coached by
George carl and I walked into the locker room and
there was the surly Gary Payton and the surly Shawn Kemp,
(04:24):
and they were all these guys were just staring daggers
through me. And I remember sitting there thinking myself, like,
oh gosh, what have I said on Sports Center over
the past few weeks and months that I might be
regretting right now by showing my space in here. And
it was a great lesson that, certainly for studio folks,
getting out on the road and showing your face is
(04:47):
a necessary part of this job, you know, And certainly
with the Seahawks where I'm right now there, Thursday night
games this fall are are both on NBC. There are
the kickoff where they're going to be kicking off the season. Um,
I think, what is it five or six weeks ago yesterday,
(05:07):
six weeks from yesterday against Green Bay and then Thanksgiving
night against San Francisco in San Francisco. So I'm not
going to see him. I'm not going to see this
team this year. I think. I think the seat Hawks
and Lions are the only ones UH in the NFL
that aren't. So I wanted to see him UM and
(05:29):
inside training camp Steader sitting in the studio going to
something were yesterday and Um chatting Wes Welker and John
Stations on this show along with Russell Wilson and Pete
Kafurd Sherman, who's not hey guys. Podcast producer Chris law
here are going to interrupt the podcast here. I had
to cut out the remaining part of the open portion
(05:50):
of our podcast. It looks like we had a bad
sound card, and as you could tell, they're from the
last thirty seconds or so, Rich's voice kept skipping every
so often. We don't have the ability to know that
that's happening in real time. So as I was putting
the podcast together and listening back, I noticed corrupt file
and looks like there's nothing we can do about it.
(06:13):
Being in the temporary studio we're in, we don't have
a backup record here, so unfortunately, I'm gonna have to
advance you guys to the Russell Wilson interview. UM didn't
miss too much. We talked for another three minutes or
so just some of the things we did hit on though.
We're UM the Marshawn Lynch hold out in Seattle and
and the impact of that UH with Robert Turbin, Christine
(06:34):
are Christian Michael getting some more carries UM, and the
fact that Lynch is also getting fined thirty thousand dollars
a day that he's holding out, and after six days
the Seahawks had the right UM to recoup or go
after some of that signing botus money. UM. A little
fun anecdote that came up as well during this is
UH if you noticed Riche yesterday at Broncos training camp. UM,
(06:55):
he was wearing a polo, and from working with rich
now Out for the past four years and producing shows
with him, he does not like to wear polos, and
UH I tried to get him to wear a polo
for a mock draft show. Uh, he did it begrudgingly. Um,
and he just doesn't like the look of it. He's
opposed to it whatever, So he made a good uh
(07:15):
he called him bucking cutter golf shirt references and it's uh,
it's it's cutter and buck. And the only reason I
mentioned this is later in the show when we come
back and during the clothes you'll hear that referenced again. Um,
but with it being cut out, that won't make any
sense to you guys. So um again, apologies for that.
We don't normally have to do this because everything runs
(07:36):
pretty smoothly, but uh, that's uh, that's how it is sometimes.
So here it is. You're gonna hear Richard's interview with
Russell Wilson. We'll come back on follow that up and
then get into the Peyton Manning and some of the
other interviews from the past two days of training camp. Enjoy.
I guess how has Marshawn Lynches, even just the first
day of his hold out, How how has that affected
(07:57):
the team in your estimation? Well, we all love Marshan
and we all want to here obviously, he's one of
the best players in the National Football League at the
end of the day that it gives a great opportunity
to Robert Turbin. Uh. You know a guy that you know,
he's actually my roommate when we travel on the road,
but a guy who's so mentally into it every day
and he's a very talent running back. He'll do a
great job for us when he steps in. He has
before from Marshawn and then Kristen Michael, young guy who
(08:17):
hasn't played yet, but it has tons of talent. Obviously
want Marshawn back. Um. You know, we we we we
believe that he's a great player for us, and he
makes so many plays. Um, but when guys sometimes have
to step up, man and the idea of competition and
idea of being ready all the time. Uh's definitely uh
in the mix right now. That's Russell Wilson in a
nutshell right there. I mean, he sounded like a coach
(08:38):
talking about wanting to just go one and oh every
week and just keeping it focused on what they need
to do just to win a certain game. Um. And
he is he's a legendary film watchers I as I
you know, we knew that about him from when he
was drafted out of Wisconsin. You remember, we remember when
we try to get him on the Kickoff Show in
(09:00):
two thousand thirty and two thousand twelve. Remember that he
was on the two twelve to twelve Kickoff show that
we did, and it was difficult to get him because
he was We got back from the Seahawks that he
was in the film room all the time and that
we had basically like a fifteen minute window before he
(09:21):
was I think it was against Atlanta because we had
we had Tony zalez Is a guest on that show.
So he's always done that. So you just know that
he just wants to get better and better and better.
And that's part of also the Marshawn Lynch situation that's
going on here, because they're gonna need to save some
money for him after we saw what Colin Kaepernick just made.
(09:42):
Russell's gonna cash in. I mean, r Also's got a
Super Bowl already, He's gonna cash in. I mean, he's
making six hundred and sixty two dollars this year. And
I saw some report where him and Andrew Gluck are
going to be up at the same time and they
could be in the twenty five per year. Ranch. Well,
I mean I'm looking at these stats. You know, the
research provide you all. His numbers are great research staff
(10:03):
for when you go out on the road. Uh. You
know he has more wins in his first two years
in any quarterback and in the in the last seventy years. Wow.
And he he he is off the charts. And uh.
In the conversation, we'll play later with Pete Cattle. Yeah,
(10:24):
I mean you could hear in his voice. To have
that guy as your the extension of your mantra within
your team, it's a dream come true. Yeah. Did you
see I'm sure you saw some of those pieces they
were airing during inside training camp of Russell and the
guys down in Manhattan Beach practicing and him, you know,
pulling Turban and all those guys together and basically running
(10:47):
a practice like a coach for thirteen to sixteen guys
in the Seahawks. That all came. I didn't know also,
as he said in his in the in the conversation,
that Turban was his roommate on the road. So and
he said he clearly if he's going to have to
be the primary rock carrier, he's got a he's got
a roommate to help him get ready for those road games. Yeah,
(11:10):
you know, could you imagine being Russell Wilson's roommate, like
you must, you better make your bed four corners, all talk,
don't choose neatly aligned, you don't talk the sheets, all
football all the time. I don't do hospital corners now. No, yeah,
you can't go hospital corners. I need my feet to breathe.
You know, really, I'm nice and talk. No, no, no,
(11:31):
my dad was in the military. Man. My bed is neatly.
I can stand a kick out. I think this is
a mirror into both your personalities as a whole. How
you how do you have your sheets? Says a lot
about you as a man. All right, let's move on.
Let's let's go back and forth on this one. Let's
go down to my conversation with Peyton Manning, the the
(11:55):
m v P quarterback of the Denver Broncos, and he's
a five time most Valuablelayers in as the football pay rich. Good,
thanks for being here. Now, you know what I figured.
It's a nice day, it's only ninety degrees. I'll just
come out here and see what I've kicked the tires
and what's going on around. Well, I'm glad to have it.
So what is going on around here for for the
Broncos coming off of a season that you just came
(12:16):
off of just starting a macro question. Well, yeah, we're
excited to get back, uh into the swing of training
camp and uh that means football season is close and
we've got some new players this year and um uh
some draft choices. Obviously, it's quite a chance to evaluate
them and get some work with them, and work with
guys like Emmanuel Sanders and you know, obviously to compete
against to Leave and DeMarcus Ware and t J some
(12:38):
of our new defensive acquisitions. What I like about training
camp riches You get to compete against the starting defense
every single day. You get into the regular season and
you go against the starting defense some, but you're going
against the scout team predominantly, and so this is a
great way to improve your improve your skills. Uh, you know,
throwing one on one against keep to Leave every day.
I promise you that I'll make you better. Yes, Well,
(12:59):
what about your operation coming into the training camp? Greg
Knapps said that the first thing you guys did when
you were able to meet was to watch for the
first time the film of the Super Bowl. We did
that back in the spring. Yeah. So you know, you
have two parts to your off season, kind of the
spring part of it, and now we're into the know
to the fall. Uh um you know, two days training camp.
(13:19):
So um. Yeah. We we feel like during the spring
to uh o t a session, you go through all
the film from last year and study yourself and last
year things have worked well, things that didn't work well,
you put those into a plan and now it's time
to kind of, you know, form your two thousand fourteen identity.
So I thought we had a good spring, uh, studied ourself,
self critical, uh, try to make some improvements and hopefully
(13:41):
we can be better for that work this season. What
was that like you to watch that footage for the
first time. You just watch it and you study it
and you try to learn from them. You know what
you have to do. I think, So, what is it
what keeps you going? Is your seventeen year coming in Peyton?
What is what is the fire that burns within that
keeps you doing same thing? I enjoy the game. I've
(14:02):
always you know, had a I guess a passion for football.
I think it's the it's the ultimate team game. Uh.
I know, I'm sure other athletes will UH make their
point of why their sport is the best sport, but
UH I'd like to be on that panel discussion arguing
for a lot of football is the best one. So
feel fortunate to be able to play it. And uh
I've been fortunate to play with some great teammates and
(14:25):
uh get coached by some really good coaches, and UM
play in front of some some great fans, and UH
it's disappointing here today that we don't have UH fans
uh out here. Fans can keep a player going, especially
during training camp that motivation, and due to our construction,
fans can't be here. So yeah, lots of those reasons.
I still enjoy the preparation part of it. I enjoy
(14:47):
working with the young players, UH, trying to get on
the same page with them. And I still feel like
I can make a contribution. I feel like if I
ever don't enjoy the work part of it and can't help,
if I'm just kind of in the way, And guess
that's probably when you stopped doing it. Are you thinking
about that at all? I'm not, you know, because I
still enjoyed and I still feel like I can make
a contribution. So the only time I think about it
(15:08):
is when I'm asked that question. So, what how is
being a father changed you? How is parent who changed
you at all? Well? I think obviously it's it provides
a great perspective. Uh and uh uh when you go
home after practice, you know you can uh stop thinking
about that practice and when you have some time with
(15:29):
your children, and uh I have it's the best thing
that's ever happened to me and Ashley and uh thankful
and grateful every day for for both our children. Imagine
it makes you more patients on the job because nothing
tries your patients more and I've worked to be uh
more patient throughout my career. I think it's a quarterback
patients uh helps Uh So I think that's that's a
(15:52):
that's a good quality I guess as a parent, and
hopefully a pretty good quality for a quarterback as well. Lastly,
the the omaha stuff we in the media, as you know,
we're sort of exited, but yeah, on that. Has anybody
approached you from the business point of view asking if
that space is for I've had a number of solicitations
via male uh conversations A lot of cities, you know,
(16:15):
like to get their city into it to a lot
of websites, a lot of websites com Yeah you could
get if you could, you can get a launch, you know,
we could, we could. It really helps spread the world
on this particular website. I can just find a way
to get that in UM. You know. Rich is the
thing that I don't understand. It's it's I don't know
who came up with all maha. I think a line
coach probably did years ago, and it's been out there
(16:36):
for a number of teams number of years that the
mics are turned up louder than they ever have as
what brings it to UM to Uh, it's about so
much attention to it. But it needs to be a
three syllable word. I mean, you know rich eyes and
said that work. Yeah, that would probably help your Twitter
followers because it is at the rich well yeah, the
(16:57):
rich eyes and being the three syllable is the key word.
And so some people you know Tennessee, you know, it
was always there for the taking. Yeah, so I wouldn't
hold your breath, okay, but to start to two thousand
and fourteen season, I'm going with olmaha Okay, I'll still
follow the Broncos season closely. Thank you, thank thanks, thank
(17:18):
you very much. That is Peyton Manning embarking on his
seventeenth National Football League campaign right here. Let's be honest.
The headline of that conversation is, well, what if he
does say your name during rich that the line of scrimmage?
Just once I thought you were maybe gonna think he'll
do it. I don't think there's any chance on this
green earth he'll do it. Breath but come on, I
(17:44):
like how you could have pushed for maybe a Cooper
because he has a brother, and your your son is Cooper.
It's got to be the three. But don't tell me
under the bus with my family, my wife and children.
By noting my son, yeah, all my kids are too
syllable names, that's true. And and and by throwing the
(18:06):
last name that's for syllable. That's too many. First names
are too few, and in first and last for too many.
I like it, perfect, it flows. Look, I'm gonna go
out on a limb and say that there's a small
shot here that he does this. There's no chance, no chances.
He's all business a week even even week one preseason
(18:30):
steps on the book even then, because every snap in
the preseason means getting better, every snap on the practice
field means you're doing something to get better. Rich you
got influenced with the Broncos organization. You were on their
draft board. I hear you, I hear you, but there's
I don't think there's any chance I liked I liked
(18:51):
what what you what you guys talked about whenever you said,
you know what, what can you take out of this
and learn here? And he you know how he was
saying in the regular season, you never really practices against
your first team D. It's always a scout D. But
here in training camp it's the ones first, the ones,
and he's the best. He knows exactly to be honest
with He knows exactly what the media he's looking for
(19:12):
in conversations. He's Belichick in that regard, except that with Belichick,
Belichick won't give you. They'll know what you want, right,
but then he won't give it to you, and he'll
answer in certain ways to make sure you don't get
another question. Apparently he was on fire the other day.
(19:32):
Peyton is far more accommodating, although when I did ask him,
you know what, what was it like when you were
watching the film in the Super Bowl? You know, uh,
he he didn't really want to answer that. I think
he's ready for people to stop asking that question. I know. Well,
I mean it's never it's not gonna end, certainly when
it comes down to well listen. Uh. The next time
I think the NFL network gets a one on one
(19:54):
conversation with him will be if we're if we're fortunate
before the Thursday night game at him and in uh
that home against San Diego repeat a rematch of the
same matchup in the same stadium. Is that week fifteen
season finale of Thursday Night Football last year where the
Chargers won, And you know, I'm excited to Seemmanuel Sanders
(20:16):
in that offense. Week three, Denver at Seattle they play
in the preseason two. Well, I guess we could talk
that up. But yeah, we could go there. All right,
let's go back here to Seattle. Let's let's talk Coach's
talk coach. If here comes Pete Cattle. My conversation with
(20:36):
the coach of the Seahawks. I'm glad to be here
at the at your your training camp and your training facility.
I was with John Elwie yesterday in Denver, and I
asked him if there was any message I should relate
to the Sea Hawks, and he said, enjoy the Super
Bowl win as long as you possibly can. Keep soaking
it and keep talking about it, keep just focusing on
(20:59):
that is not touching. I'm glad that he's concerned for
us enjoying and having fun. Try to do all that
we can, and that's long gone. Right now, I'm wondering
where you where your philosophy has been on making sure
everybody turns that page and starts focusing on the here. Well,
that's already happened. You know, we we're well on our
way in that regard. Uh. You know, I think I
(21:20):
think rich our mentality that we've been teaching for a
long time fits the situation, and that we've always put
whatever just happened behind us and so uh and always
keep working for that next step that you've got to
take the next challenge at hand, and all of that,
and so the language and the and the discipline that
it takes to focus like that is already in place.
And we that doesn't mean we take it for granted,
(21:40):
but we've been talking in the manner to be ready
for this opportunity for a long time, and so our
guys should handle it well. And uh, and it really
will show up in the workload, you know that they're
going after. Is the ethic there, the intensity there that
that we've always counted on. Have you mentioned the word repeating?
Have you have you thrown that on the table? I've
never in all the years, I've never mentioned that that
that's that's never been because I never gotten into that
(22:02):
whole thing about the end result thing. You know, we're
doing on time. We're talking about tomorrow, the very next day.
That's right here coming up. We'll be our topic all
day long today, you know. So we have a great
day tomorrow. We had a heck of a good first
day and and we'll try to prepare for another great
day tomorrow and just keep marching that way strictly with
great discipline to that and people talk that way. We're
trying to be that way and and uh, it's a challenge,
you know, it is disciplined that we you know, it
(22:23):
gets us here well at the story of the day
over here with your practice may have been one thing
over here with the media. It's Marshawn Lynch not being here,
we're we're What are your thoughts on the holdout of
a guy who's so integral to your offense last year? Well,
I'm never disappointed to not have him. You know, he's
been a big part of our team and we like
him around here. He's you know, he's he's our guy,
and we missed that he's not here. I feel bad
(22:43):
that he's not here for him to um, this is
a fantastic time to be with us. This team is flying,
and it worked so hard. They care so much about
what we're doing. Uh, and he's he's missing out on
all that, and it's by his choice. You know. What
we've reached. What we did is we put a plan
in motion years ago to be of this football team
and in the structure in the manner that we can
maintain a high level of performance and think about winning
(23:05):
over a long period of time. And Marshawn is a
huge part of that. We made a big gesture to
him a couple of years ago and in his contract
and he was a big part of that plan and
it remains to be um as as you've seen how
active John's Ben John Sounder has done a great job
of staging these You know these as signings as we've
gone through it to maintain the level of play. And
now you know, Sean has been part of that. Right now,
he's he's at home and has two chosen not to come.
(23:27):
But uh, we're really focused as we would on the
guys that are here and and the guys that have
put together a great offseason and we're going to camping
in terms of improving how much are you see what
you did last year? And obviously there's always ups and
downs in the season. When we're picking confetti out of
your hair. It's tough for many people from the outside
looking and to know how much better you can be?
But how much better can there's there's areas that we
(23:51):
can improve and there's you know, the consistency of our
play in the in the consistency of our ability to
perform on game day, regardless of where we're playing, who
we're playing against. There's always so much for improvement. We're
still such a young team, you know, and we're just
we're just growing together. So um, it's important for us
to find the consistency on the offensive side of the ball.
We always want to run the football and we want
to stay with that thought you know, we've run it
(24:12):
over a thousand times the last couple of years, so
we're committed to it and when we will remain there,
but we can always run it better. UH. Protecting the
quarterback huge a huge issue for us. We want to
make sure that we're improving there. Russell's gonna grow. Our
receivers are so young and and spunky. Those guys can
make things happen and we're better there. Um. Anthony McCoy
coming back helps her tight end position. He's a real
big factory. He missed him all last year. Percy being
(24:34):
with us hopefully you know, he'll be with us on
a regular basis huge factor for us. So on that
side of the ball. Defensively, we want to make sure
that we continue to focus on the pass rush. We've
got to keep keep heating it up and keep that
thing going to take advantage of the coverage guys on
the on the deep end and UH, on teams or returns,
we're gonna in question now you know personally is that
kickoff returner he's buying for the punt return job and
(24:54):
battling and competing with her all. Uh, it's gonna be
a real exciting thing there. So all of those are
areas that we can improve on. It's a it is
difficult for my position to ask ultra competitive people like
yourself career questions, but I'm gonna do it anyway, because
we all know your career going from the Pros to college,
being successful there, and then coming back to the Pros.
You came back the Pros and you've won the Super Bowl.
(25:15):
You did it, and many people were wondering if you could.
And I'm sure you've heard those people saying that now
that you have done it, have you taken a moment
to just soak in the fact that you did it? Well,
Rich I really appreciate that it had the opportunity to
do it, you know. I mean, I didn't know if
I'd ever get that chance. I was had a great
time in sc and we loved all the time there.
When this chance came up, it was to take the
(25:38):
things that we had built as the foundation of our
philosophy or approach, and see what would happen on this level,
and see if we take care of people the way
we took care of him there. We looked after him
and cared so much for him, and and see what
would happen here in the n f NFL and and
uh the fact that you know, four years later, you know,
we're Super Bowl champs. It's a It is something I'm
very proud of, and I'm proud of, but most proud
(25:58):
to have the opportunity and got a shot to do it. Uh,
you know, Paul Allen gave us the opportunity. John I
put this thing together and then we made something happen
with an in short order. But I came here thinking
we could do it. You know, I came here thinking
we would be able to do this, and this was
we are hoping we could prove it. So now that
the great challenge to do it one time. It's school
and all that, but the great challenges to come back
and show that you can maintain the kind of level
(26:20):
of excellence. And it's been very hard around the league
in the history of it, and and it's a great
challenge for us. I love that same challenge in college.
You know, we've been through that before. And hopefully our
language and our approach and our mentality will will We'll
give us a chance to be in fight. And how
much is Russell Wilson the tip of that spear for you?
Just his mentality, and he's an incredible player on our
football team. Is incredible person Um. He gives us every opportunity.
(26:43):
He is a great play played great in the super Bowl.
You know, he just played almost an impeccable game in
the Super Bowl. Um, that didn't get noticed as much,
you know, because of the defense and all things that happened.
But in the most challenging of you know, of games,
he played just like a true pro. And so we
come off of that season and in the last two
years of his development and only he's gonna get better
and he's working his tail off again. He's in great shape.
(27:06):
He's you know, he's just such a pleasure to have
on your football team that he's a huge part of this. Coach,
thanks for having appreciate that. That's coach Pete Carroll, super
Bowl winning head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Well, I
mean he he went full on answer about the Marshawn
Lynch called out. You know, I thought I was gonna
he he did finally get around to the coaching cliche.
(27:32):
I'm only talking about the guys who are here. That's
one of your favorite ones. Well, I mean there's three
of them. It is what it is. Of course, I
don't have a crystal ball, which is one of my
favorite coaching cliches. When you're you're asking who when, what's
gonna happen? When something happens, when someone may come back.
What's gonna happen when this person you know comes back
(27:54):
and the other person's taking his job or injury? What
you do? I don't have a crystal ball, guy, guy,
I don't have a the ball. That's my favorite coaching cliche.
There um and then and then it's the it is
what it is. I don't have a crystal ball. And
then I can only control what you what I can control,
or you can only control what you can control. And
(28:14):
the cousin of that that comes out only once a
summer and summertime is I'm only talking about the guys
were here, right, because that only comes up this first
week when the holdouts kind of trickle up. Yeah, it's
usually a summer. It could be spring, you know, if
they don't show off to the mandatory O t a
s couldn't happen in spring. I'm only talking about the
(28:36):
guys were here. I can just picture Belichick every time
you say that, and then they don't even say his
name that the player right, right, but Pete, Pete. He
gave us the full answer and then finally gotten around too.
I'm only you know, I can only talk about the
(28:56):
guys were here, and I mean listen, you know there's
there's there's both sides you could see, and I don't
know what's gonna happen. Like I said, you could think,
you could try. We could spend from here to the
end of our fraternitys trying to figure out what Marshawn
Lynch is thinking and how it makes them chick rich.
You you don't have a crystal ball. I don't have
(29:16):
a crystal ball, but right now it is what it
is for Seattle, and they're gonna go and and put
their their their backups in there and see what they
can do. Um. So that's that's peak count. And here's
my conversation now with Denver head coach John fox Well.
Back in graduate school, I was taught never to start
an interview with a how does it feel question? How
do you feel type question? But with you, John fox
it is more Germain than anything else. How do you
(29:38):
feel right now? I feel great? Yeah, clean bill of health.
You know, I thought it was pretty healthy when I
came back four weeks postop. But you know I'm a
hundred fifty percent better than then, and uh, you know,
very energized and ready for the two thousand four teen
season because obviously the coaching profession isn't conducive to I
guess a healthy lifestyle sometimes because of the number of
hours you put in, the pressure, the the the crucible
(30:02):
of coaching. How how have you been able to, I guess,
change your lifestyle? Well, really, my issue was not a
lifestyle issue. It wasn't like I had by passed because
I had Claude daughtery arteries or anything. But it was
just a valve that I was born and only had
two flappers and I did three. So they got me
fixed up and you know, I'm rare and ready to go.
(30:22):
So what what are you looking at for this training camp?
Day one? Now? Is in the books? What is your
plan I guess for what you want to get out
of this training camp for the Broncos? Well in the
NFL now, I mean even I stood, you know in
front of that team at the end of the two
thousand and thirteen season, is you know there's change and uh,
you know we lost some Uh, some important cogs on
(30:42):
the way. We've got them rehab been ready to go.
We lost six starters, they're all returning. We went out
in free agency. John Elway and his staff did a
tremendous job and you know a little bit of uh
talent to both offense and defense. So we're excited about that.
We've been working with this bunch through the offseason and uh,
you know, they took a month off and came back
(31:03):
last night and came back in tremendous shape. Obviously, you
got ward to leap with DeMarcus where clearly you know,
we we we know what he can do on the field.
What do you think he can do for von Miller
specific Yeah, I think you know, you're always looking for leadership,
you know, and a lot has been made of what
Peyton Manning has done with our offense, and you know,
we think DeMarcus t j Annikey for that matter, can
(31:23):
you know, add some of that attitude, uh in leadership
to our defense and and DeMarcus case h On but
with Vughon, I mean bonds a Texas guy grew up.
I went to D A and M and you know,
really DeMarcus has been kind of a hero of his. Uh,
you know, in the state of Texas all those years
growing up, So he's been following him around like a
little puppy. And I say that effectively, and uh, there
(31:45):
will be nothing but great help to bond with you. Um,
coming off of a championship conference season and what happened
in the Super Bowl, how do you as a coach
turn the page to make sure there's no hangover on
that front? Well, I mean, truth be told, if if
you don't win your last game, there's disappointment. Go back
to our first year we lost to New England in
the divisional round, two years ago losing to Baltimore here
(32:07):
at home in the Divisional round, and and this year
losing to uh Seattle in the Super Bowl. So uh,
it's still the same end result. You don't win your
last game and until you do, uh, there's gonna be disappointment.
So that's the goal every year. It will be no difference.
What is it like having Peyton Manning run onto the
field a training camp as a head coach where you
just sort of is there a sense of ease or
(32:31):
is this a sense of Uh, Well, it does give
you conflax, It gives you confidence. I mean, uh, you know,
if I've said all along my career showed me a
great coach, I'm gonna share you great players. And uh,
there's no question he's a great player. And really, uh,
this will be our third season with him, and uh,
he sees his do amazing. His approach to the game,
whether it's the offseason, uh, you know, game week preparation,
(32:54):
training camp preparation, it looks great. You know, I think
he's in the best shape he's ever been in. And uh, um,
you know, the guy marvels you every day. Coach appreciate
the time. Probably always a pleasure. By the same year,
that's John Fox, the head coach of the a f
C champion Denver Broncos. He looked good, guys, I'm serious.
He looked good, he looked trim, he looked fit, he
(33:15):
was fired up, ready to go. It's amazing to think
that last year, you know, he missed missed a few games,
serious serious condition that happened when he was in North Carolina.
In what he said, I love probably described it because
I think we had Dr oz On talking about when
the heart surgery that that that's right, we did have
(33:35):
Dr oz that that he was going through. He wasn't
telling me magic pills, thankfully, that's right. Maybe Dr Ross
was talking about the aortic valve replacement. Blah blah blah.
Fox just basically said, listen, I had only two flappers.
I needed the third. I was born without. It was
it wasn't a lifestyle thing. I needed two flappers. They
(33:58):
needed three flappers. That's technical, right. I don't know if
you saw did you see that picture that um Jay
Glazer tweeted out yesterday morning? I believe he was right
a shotgun with Fox driving. He was there. I saw
him there too. You know he's presenting string hand. Yeah,
that's amazing, by the way, present So Glazier is going
(34:21):
to be in a top down convertible parade and can't
know how of course he is. That might be the
party to go to Saturday night question. I know who
had the headliner? I don't know if I'm allowed to say,
can we break some news here? I don't know if
I'm allowed to say. I could guess a few. I mean,
it's got to be a New York artist. Um, you
(34:43):
gotta think either it's Jay z nas or I think
I mean, I'm thinking how you think those guys are
a big rap guys. I think stray Hand and I
think Glazer too. Really could I be? Are we in
the right genre? Rich? I can't. I can't. I don't
to give any hints. But you didn't. You didn't name
the person. Okay, it's not Bruce Springsteen opening no, but
(35:05):
I'm thinking those guys are more kind of rockers, John Legend.
Maybe it might be John Legend. Actually, I feel I
feel a John Legend coming up. John Legend played Jerry
Rice years ago, did he? I The first time NFL
dot Com ever used one of my photos was my
first trip to Hall of Fame when Snoop Dogg came
(35:26):
out for Dion's and I'm like three ft from Snoop
and I got the contact high. I think I still
have those emails, emails in my NFL network. That's still
that's still the party to be topped. When Dion and
marshall Um combined forces and Snoop Snoop showed and NELLI
for Marshall Right, that's right, it's ridiculous. Oh man, ohio.
(35:49):
I think that's the first time Rich looked over to
me and gave me that What more can I do
for you? The first thing and then the first of
any that was a good turning. All right, let's come
back now here to the seat ATAMU and give you
a visual. As you'll hear from the start of this conversation,
(36:09):
I was standing a camera left, as they would say,
so if you're seeing a screen on camera left, Richard
Sherman was camera right in the middle of us was
Earl Thomas, the legion of boom uh. Fittingly right next
to me. We have Earl Thomas manning the middle of
this interview and then shutting down that portion of the
frame Richard Sherman. And just so you know, I don't
(36:32):
I don't travel. I stay, I stay on this side.
Does that work with the whole operations? Is it's fine
if I don't travel, you don't have to travel. We're
not to travel. We have something in pieces back there.
Everybody brings him to this other thing. That's the way
it works. Bring just bring your parts of table. Well,
that's what I'm attempting to do right now, although I
don't I don't know if I came out of the
blocks too too fast or not. But just with you
(36:55):
guys and what you guys represent for the team, we
all know Russells and Marshawn we'll get you in a
minute or in many ways. To face of the offense
and the defense. You guys in the back have a
certain responsibility. What do you think that responsibility is? Just
being who we are, setting the tone understandable. We bring
(37:15):
to the table, and everybody has a particular thing that
they're they're great at. So every game you have to
bring what you're great at. He's great at taking the
ball away. Cam's great at enforcing the ball, being a
great enforce in the middle. I'm great at controlling the
deep third. So if we all play and bring it,
we can bring to the table. We're I'm metable. What
are you saying that? I feel the same way. You know, everybody,
everybody brings a different element to our defense. He brings
(37:38):
a pass and the intensity. You know, Cam brings the menace,
the anger. You know, Max brings some some some youth
and you know, some some playmaking ability. And I just
try to do my part, you know, with the mental
side of it. We stay locked in together and on
the string and you know it works out good. We
just we just do our parts to make sure the
continuity of defense is there, and what what about the
(37:59):
I guess now that next year now that everybody, not
that you guys, even in the last year or so,
could have taken anyone by surprise. But now you guys
have the Pro Bowl rep as well as the actual
Pro Bowl to go with it, and All Pro What
about this year now coming in with the Super Bowl
(38:20):
under your belt when nothing's really nothing's gonna change. It's
just it's just a different level of understanding. We've been
making Pro Bowls, We've been making All Pros, so that's
nothing new to us. We're just so satisfied and grateful
for the pure opportunity to be playing football. This is
a child's game, and we have fun out here. We
celebrate with each other. And the thing that separates us
from everybody else is the way we communicate out here.
(38:40):
It's second or nine. Who's the most competitive of you?
That's hard to say. He's up there as he It's granted,
I mean he is that. It's regardless of any sport,
ping pong, tennis, table tennis, hockey, air hockey, regor hockey, anything,
you know. I was brought up there way. I'm based
(39:00):
on hard work, most short cuts, and I feel like
I'm an ultimate competitive so I just carry myself like that.
I didn't have to be a champion to win a
super Bowl. I always thought I was a champion, you know,
But to everybody else, you have to prove that you're
a champion. But when we always carry yourself like a champion,
everything else gonna fall in place. But you're no wall
flywer and a competitive flywer now we we we have none,
(39:20):
you know. I think that's the mindset and I think
that's those are the kind of guys that Pete brings in,
you know, very hyper competitive guys in any kind of situation,
so that when it comes down to one on one matchups,
everybody takes part in what they're what they do and
really does everything they can to win their one on
one matchups to not let the defense down. That I
think that's that's what makes our defense. And everyone knows
your your story in particular Richard, I mean, you were
(39:41):
a first round draft choice. You were not, and what
you have become is one of the best in the business.
Now that you have I guess a contract to go
with that, where do you see your game going? Uh
to being consistent you know, and us in the back end,
we have a standard. You know, everybody it lives up
to the standards. So we don't. We don't. We don't
(40:02):
really pay attention to what other people think or where
other people places. We always feel like we're the best.
He feels like he's the best free safety in the game.
I feel like I'm the best corner camps because like
he's the best strong safety. Max feels the same way
on the other side, and that's where where we're at.
We set the bar for ourselves and we go chase it.
You know, they can put everybody else wherever they want him,
but we're chasing a different bar where you guys, um
(40:23):
obviously we're we're in the meter gonna fixate on Marshawn
Lynch every day he's not here day one. What are
your thoughts with Marshawn mountain here, bro Oh, He's he's
a very unique person. He's different. You know, you don't.
We don't know what he's going through. So all we
can do is support him as a teammate. You know,
you just want to trick all your teammates well. And
he means a lot of this organization and I pretty
(40:43):
sure him and he's gonna work everything out. What about youth, Richard, Yeah,
feel the same way. You know, he we have no no,
we have no reason to believe he won't be in shape.
You know he'll he'll be ready to go whenever he comes.
You know, he's been a great teammate. He'll continue to
be a great teammate and a great workhorse for us.
And you know, I don't think he's missing very much.
You know, it's not like in the preseason and camp.
He gets a lot of reps, so I'm sure he's,
(41:05):
you know, standing in shape wherever he's at, and they'll
they'll get it worked out. So, um, when it all
comes down to it, what's it gonna feel like? First night?
Green Bays and whole countries watching. You're raising the banner
if you guys thought about that, I thought about every game.
It's the championship opportunity. That's when we want a super Bowl.
Last year it felt like a regular game. So why
did it really? Yes, you know what I was doing
(41:27):
when the confetitive was going downs like where's the restaurant?
I have to use the restaurant like I'm being I
don't know if we should go into further details. Were
saying like I wasn't. I wasn't. I was calling a
moment or we want a super Bowl. But it didn't
wound me like it did everybody else I did this.
I'm like, it's that's all. We're supposed to do that
to me. You know, if you are who you say
you are and that's how we feel, you know, that's
(41:48):
that's the that's the confidence, and that's the the work ethic.
Everybody goes out here and goes up put puts a
hunter and ten on the field, and every game is
a championship opportunity. So you know, it was just our
last championship opportunity that happened to Coleman the whole deal.
Last question for you, this is obviously a next man
up mentality, always compete. We know that here um and
many many times that happens within your unit. Your perfect
(42:09):
example of that too. Should there be a next man up?
You mentioned my forty time, Earl. Do you think I
have an L O B type status that presides within
his chess? I saw your forty so you have a
little bit of soul, So I think you have a
chance to play in the second and maybe the nickel
the nickel position nic passing we have. It's all a loan,
(42:34):
guys like this, it's a island. It's very tough. Your
hips kind of tight. Yes, that's true, it's kind of tight.
So I don't know because it right, it's a lot
of space in there though. You know, we we just
gotta make sure we know where our help is and
and you know where our leverage side is. But you know,
I played from the neck up like you guys. You know,
I know, I mean, Michigan is sort of the Stanford
of the Midwest, So you know, I know, Texas, we
(42:55):
don't need we don't need to talk about rose Boto.
We don't missing us afford Texas. All right, Well listen,
if you know where I am, I've been living for
all of the time, Earl Thomas Richard Sherman. Thanks, thanks,
and I'm around if you need me. Thank you. There
(43:17):
you have them. So that's a fun conversation. Good times
with with those two guys who are gotten to be
got paid. They got paid. But that's another thing too,
is that with this team you don't get the sense
of any sort of complacency. I mean, if you think
about those guys got paid, they want a Super Bowl
(43:39):
and they just looked like they're ready to tear the
rest of the league of new one. Yeah, you know,
and that's just this. There's so many chips on shoulders
here in the in the in the Seattle Times today,
in this paper they had four different preseason publications, some
of them I've never heard of, and pointing out how
(44:03):
none of them picked Seattle to repeat, you know, I
mean everybody who. I was asked by a local radio post.
I was on a radio show here saying that the
perception is that the rest of the country loves to
hate the Seahawks. Isn't that It isn't that incredible, like
(44:24):
what a difference one year makes. But I don't believe
that for yeah, at least, no, I think the Seahawks
are like kind of a lovable team. And I mean
I think most people, I really, I know. The Aaron
Andrews Richard Sherman conversation put Richard Sherman in a different
plateau of being, you know, having having his name known
(44:45):
and recognized, I think, and maybe notorious to certain people
based on people hate the Patriots, people hate the Cowboys. Yeah,
but I think there's I think there's some college football
fans who root for NFL teams that don't like Pete Carroll.
They don't like the way USC conducted themselves during those
years and the way they just kind of ran rampant
through college football. Uh. I think that's kind of left over,
(45:09):
and then Richard Sherman has kind of taken it to
a whole other level here. Yeah, it's interesting what you said.
Four publications picked them not to the last. The last
Super Bowl team that won a playoff game was the
two thousand five Patriots. They beat the Jaguars. That's the
last time a Super Bowl team just to win a
playoff game. I wouldn't even in the following the following season,
(45:35):
unless unless, unless television was wrong today, in the following season, Yeah,
because a lot of them missed it. The Patriots missed it,
The Packers didn't make it back, the Steelers didn't make
it back, the Ravens last year. I just I've told
you before, I think this team is going to win
it again. What was the dynamic when you're really do
(45:58):
feel it the guys, I feel wow, I feel it.
I feel it. They're that good. What's the dynamic? This
goes really good? But I just feel it, and I
just don't think. And you you know we've talked I've
talked about this before too. Is I think we're gonna
find out this team is has a national following. It's
not just some cult community up here. Yeah. And they
(46:19):
all can't just travel from Seattle everywhere and show up introls.
They'll just don't show up from Seattle. I mean, you know,
I'm sure there's a lot of Seattle and Pacific Northwest
transplants that live elsewhere, but I mean the fans showing
up everywhere. But you guys saw it right in New
York was overrun with New York's overrun Arizona when Richard
was there for the Nuper Bowl. You got to discount
(46:42):
that because I mean, how many times the Seattle made
Super Bowls before, right, I mean not many? And and
fans of the organizations that that rarely makes Super Bowl
I know, I know, I know, but you never know
what they're gonna make it true, that's true. What was
the dynamic like because you just talk to both the
guys um Richard Sherman gets all of the attention and
(47:04):
the publicity and is obviously one of the best, if
not the best corners in the league. But most if
you ask most people, they'll say harl Thomas is the
reason he can do what he does and why that
defense works. You heard in the conversation, I asked who
is the most competitive and Sherman deferred to Thomas on
the spot. So I think that there is mutual admiration
(47:25):
and love. I don't think there's any issues here. I
mean that's I don't h it. I don't sense it.
And it is so laid back here. I mean there
are other organizations that have won super Bowls in the
NFL that just you know, uh, it's it's a little
bit let's just put it a little bit more rigid
when you show up to their facilities. Well you, I
mean everyone here today it was just like another day
(47:48):
in the park as opposed to is you would you
would definitely not think this is a super Bowl winning
team just based on how Lucy Goosey it is here.
When that go and that starts at the top right
with Pete, I mean that's yeah, he's got yeah. Or
callum America's youngest teenager. What kind of step dad is
(48:13):
Pio interviews here in um in Um in Seattle. Let's
finish up with my my chat. So there's one real
quick with Wes Welker because uh, in the middle of it,
you'll even here and edit the siren went off because
there was lightning in the area in Denver, Um. So
(48:33):
it was a real quick interview. And then right back
to back after West as my chat with John Owen.
I'm here with a Pro Bowl wide receiver, the Denver Broncos.
West Welker, good to see You're so good to see you, Ris.
How are you good? How abour yourself? I am hanging
in there. It's training camps. It was good to see
guys with helmets and pants doing football things this time
of year. What was it like for you? Now? I
guess your break is over and you're back to work.
(48:54):
What's it like? Yeah, it's uh, you know, it came quick,
That's all I know. Um, let's tell my wife. I
was like, I can't believe it's are you here? But
I'm excited it's here, and looking forward to this year
and looking forward to a lot of the additions we've
made and everything like that, and and just ready to
get to work. Obviously, in addition being Emmanuel Sanders in
Eric Decker out, how is that affecting the wide receiving corps.
(49:15):
From your point of view, UM, not really affecting at all.
I mean, guys leave, guys come in. Um, it's as
part of the game. And guys just gotta step up
and and just trying to get him on the same
page with us and Peyton and everything else. And he's
picking it up really well and and looking forward to
having having him out there. At this point last year,
all of us in the media, we're wringing our hands
(49:36):
over how Peyton Manning was gonna divide the football up
amongst the receiving corps, and then it worked out pretty
darn well. And we weren't even talking about Julius Thomas
at the time. At this point last year, what what
what was it like for you going through the offense
for the first time with Peyton Manning at the control.
It was awesome, you know. Um, he really does a
(49:58):
great job of eating the coverages and and finding the
open guy and and uh, you know, when when you
have weapons like we do, um, you know, it makes
it easy just to kind of read the coverage and
whatever they're giving us, their given us and and we're
going to that guy and and uh, it's it's been good.
Good to have that. Any similarities between him and Tom Brady, Um, yeah,
(50:20):
I think you know their their leadership skills and and
um you know their preparation in the games and different
things like that. You know there's lots of leaders there.
And your personal goals you want to a goal setter,
just do you write them down? Do you do that? Um?
I am a goal setter in a way. But really
when it comes down to me, is is just going
out there and playing every play the best of my
ability and play as hard as I can and and
(50:42):
everything usually takes care of yourself. Let's do that. So
that's your way of not sharing your goals publicly or
basically basically because I'm trying to pry about these goals
right now, trying to hard, very very secretive, private, very private.
Have to remain that much. I guess. Thanks for joining me.
I appreciate. I appreciates about the poor rain. So let's
get West Welcer out of here. I'm here with Hall
of Famer John O with the top football man and
(51:03):
this organization here in Denver, Colorado. Good to see you, John.
It's good to see you. I'm I'm glad to be
seen Obviously the training camp um has a lot of
excitement to it, but this year it's a totally different
story with the announcement UH in regards to Pat Ball
and no longer having day to day control of the team.
We were very emotional talking about it yesterday day later.
I'd love to just pick your brain on your you know,
(51:25):
I think that you know, it's you know, we kind
of knew that day was coming at some point in time,
but I think for the realization and having really the
questions asked, having to answer it, I think the the
emotions can't got to me. And I think that, you know,
because of my what I think of Pat Bowl and
what he's meant to this city, what he's meant to
this organization, what he meant to to me and my career,
you know, it was we really can't repay him for
(51:46):
all that. So you know, it was a tough day,
but you know he's turned it over into good hands
and and Joe Ellis and and you know, hope they
were going to continue to run this the way that
he would run and if you were here every day.
We're hoping that he's still is able to come at times,
but we'll see how that goes. Yeah, just talking to
people around here, it sounds like he had some good days. Yeah,
so he'll be able to come in, but we'll have
(52:07):
to play that by year. But he will be missed
because he was a he was the pillarness an organization
for thirty years and we'll we'll miss seeing him every day. Yeah.
And I was talking to Tom Jackson was here for
another network, and he was saying that he remembered how
Pat would be sometimes a better condition than some of
the players on the team that he was one of
the he could have actually gone out there and run
(52:28):
faster than some of the players that he was paid
he could have. You know, he was, you know, a
triathlete and that for many years. And I think that that's,
you know, why he had that competitive edge that he
had I think he has over the other owners. And
the fact that he was a competitor and didn't compete
like that and and stayed in great shape. So you
know that we will miss What's what's your favorite moment
that your memory I guess if somebody, well, I mean
(52:50):
I think that there's there's several of them, but I think,
you know, the one that sticks out the most is
when when he had me the trophanshot both thirty two
and this was for John. I mean that was and
no surprise surprise me when he said that, Um, it
was still the most special moment that I've ever had,
other than my kids had been born, has been there
that hold on that La Marty Trophy because that fifteen
(53:11):
years we finally got there, and it took us a
long time to get there. So yeah, I mean, there
you have it. John Elway is essentially uh, you know,
Mike Silver said after because Silver was there too, that
Elway has the moves that they made in the off
season where to get tougher, to hit back when they're
hit and if you know, even better to do the
(53:33):
hitting first, like the team here in Seattle, and you
know keep to leave and t J Ward that and
and de Marcus Ware to put on the opposite end
of von Miller. Um is exactly what they're looking for.
And you know who was also their coaching the defensive
backs for the next three weeks, Rod Woodson. Rodo interesting
(53:56):
that comes to stroll off the film like, oh, looks
like Rod Woodson. There was Rod you know, because he
because Fox was his position coach in Pittsburgh back in
the day. And so he goes way back with John
Fox and or Is he calls him Johnny Fox and
you know, and so he's there for three weeks um
(54:16):
coaching up those guys. And he looked at me to
one points, this defense is going to be really really good.
And and and you know, from what I've heard, de
Marcus ware being has been brought in, not just you know,
for his past rushing ability, which the Broncos clearly I
think he still has. But I mean von Miller has
got some growing up to do, and some and and
(54:40):
and and the Marcus ware has been brought in. It
appears to sort of, I don't know, if it's to
teach him how to be a pro might be too
harsh a phrase. Certainly remind him, remind him what time
it is sometimes literally if it's late at night. And
(55:02):
so again, ver you know, the l A and those
guys are, they're more excited because I think everybody expects
the offense. Fine. Manning's out there at fifty five touchdowns
last year. He looks good. He's he really does look good. Right,
you said you expect him to throw fifty again. There's
no question I wrote that in the MMQB for Peter King,
(55:24):
There's no question, there's no doubt. What was anybody you think,
like Emmanuel Sanders isn't going to just fit in seamlessly
in this offense, or one of the kids that they drafted,
I mean, Peyton Manning. Let's let's be honest. Wasn't Blair
White catching touchdowns for Indianapolis for a while? How many guys?
How many guys is Peyton Manning had to put their
name on the NFL map? I mean, I'm not concerned
(55:46):
about that at all. Last year we were even I
mentioned what welcome, we were all ringing her hands. How
is Peyton Manning gonna split up the football? Less welcome there?
That wasn't gonna split it up. He's gonna throw it
to the guy that we were talking about. And Julius Thomas.
You've never even heard of France at this point last year,
anybody was talking about in third year basketball player in
the NBA ever ever. So you know, and it's interesting
(56:08):
again the A s C. West plays the n Scus,
They're gonna play him, but everyone's gonna play everybody. It's
just great. The two divisions, the two divisions one Division
sending three teams, the other one basically having the the
fact of Super Bowl is their conference championship game last
year's going to be exciting. And then how's the organization
doing with the Peppo And there's obviously well, I mean
it broken up. Tom Jackson was there from the STN.
(56:30):
You know, TJ is uh goes way back to the
Orange Trush days, and he was he was broken up.
He was broken up about it. That I was, you know,
was broken up about it. Everybody was apparently though he
still has good days and you know, we'll be around,
but in terms of day to day it's over. Yeah,
that's a thing that is, you know. And so that
(56:52):
was a big story this week, certainly in Denver. But
it's been interesting two days. And I then to uh
box in Argyscy the Cowboys in a couple of days.
Yeah that's before we we'd be remiss if we didn't
ask you to obviously. The big other story was the
Ray Rice stuff and the penalty they came down on that.
I gotta be honest, I'm surprised at how how uh
(57:14):
lenient the two games suspension is. I wish it was longer.
Let's just put it that way, I'm I. You know,
certainly the optics when you compare them. Even though with
with the drug suspensions that we have seen, any time
a player is suspended for drugs, it is a frequently
(57:35):
it's got to be a third time violation. You don't
even know in the first two are right, or any
any any any thing in the drug policy. If somebody
loses games, it's a multiple offense, whereas in the personal
conduct obviously with ray Rice, was the first time offense,
and and the judge did not the judge effect, if
you think about it, the judge in this case um
(57:59):
says to ray Rice, you're accepted into some counseling program
that if he completes this thing is expunged from his
record like it never happened. That's the only will be
that horrible video which there's ragging his wife or his
fiance out of the elevator. That's gonna be the only
evidence of this. So if if ray Rice does what
(58:20):
we we hope and expect him to and and he
says he is leading an upstanding life, he's going to
be expunged from his record completely, which is an outrage
and it's sort of gets footnote it sort of gets
a footnote when the only guy to have disciplined him
disciplines him in a manner that that is that that
definitely is too light. But at least he's been disciplined
(58:45):
and a half million dollars. But you know, I, you know,
i'd I would, I would absolutely at him harder. There's
no doubt in my mind. But I'm you know, that's
not my pay right, I'm standing here in this Seattle
of the Seattle air and on the turf getting ready
to go to Oxnard. But yeah, I mean, it's just
(59:06):
it's it's just a it's a horrible episode. Then again,
I hope Ray Rice, you know, comes correct in his
life and uh and you know, uh in a manner
that that you know, a judicial system that where listen,
(59:27):
I don't know the whole facts of all the case
and what what what what what he essentially you know,
pled to or or told the judge or whatever. I'm
not in these beatings, but the fact that he's gonna
it never will exist on his record. I'm sure that
happens in a lot of places in America. Maybe that
maybe that's what the outrage should be about, is trying
to fix that. Yeah, it's unfortunate thing. I mean, and
(59:52):
anybody that commented on it is I mean horrible. Was
criticized for his reaction to it, and it's just it's
just one of those things that nothing paris to stephen A. Smith. Yeah,
it's that blew up today an that got out of
hand in a hurry. But what else is going on
in this world? Uh, it's just great that we're that
(01:00:15):
we were talking about actual football helmets on and no
more helmets and tweet that I tweeted that. I tweet
that out and you know how many responses I got
from people when I say, hey, it's great seeing football
players and pads doing football things, and people said, tweet
me back, you mean like beating your fiancee, you know,
And and so this paints uh, everyone with an ugly brush.
(01:00:39):
So that said, I mean, you're right, I'm you know,
because on the heels of all this is the Hall
of Fame where we're headed um and we're we're you know,
we're televising the Jacket ceremony for the first time. Yeah,
Friday night that I'll air on NFL network. Yeah, which
is great. I mean, for eleven years I've I've seen this,
and it's the most moving aspect of the weekend. It really,
(01:01:01):
Saturday is always moving and the speed. People always talk
about how the speeches moved them and how eloquent this
person was or how moving that person was. Nothing beats
the jacket ceremony because the Saturday event is the day
after the jacket ceremony, and they do see their busts
for the first time, and that is a moving moment,
and then they give their speech, which they'll never forget.
(01:01:23):
But the first moment, the first time when the entire
lead up to the weekend becomes reality, is when they
see all of the guys who are in the Hall
of Fame return and waved to the crowds wearing their
jacket in the Canton Downtown Civic Center, and then received
the jackets themselves, have it slipped on them by their presenter,
(01:01:47):
and that moment is always a tear jerker for everyone.
Never been telling us, well that comes. It's nine o'clock
Eastern Friday night. It's going to be pretty Sunday. Thing
you hosted too was my other favorite. It's the luncheon.
It's the same role of the dinner. It's the round table.
(01:02:07):
It's sort of like that how how do you feel
now that you're in the Hall of Fame type discussion.
It's the first time these guys ever answered those questions
on masks and usually with no voice from a late
party the night before. And yeah, I'm sure sometimes when
somebody's come straight from the pod to the lunch. But
(01:02:28):
good times, very much so um and good times I
had two boys hopefully uh um, very good times in
that regard, and all you know one other things too,
you know. The passing of James Garner really affected me. Yeah.
I don't know about you, guys, if you're too young
because of you know, the Rockford find you know, I
definitely am. I guess my first introduction to him was
(01:02:52):
when he kind of reprised his role in the movie Maverick, Yeah,
where he put where he played mel Gibson's father. That
was kind of the first introduction to him for me.
But I do I'm old enough to remember the Rocker
Files and then his his polaroid commercials with the actress
Mary at Hartley, very famous. But they thought they were
really like married, and there weren't, but they acted like
(01:03:12):
a married couple with their polaroid camera and not not
not like Jason Segal Cameron Diaz type married couple with
their camera but um topical joke. Rich, thank you, sir,
trying to bring it all together. You know, I really was,
I really was affected by that. And part of the
reason why I bring this up to is I wanted
to tell this story because I met James Garner once.
(01:03:36):
Once is when you know, before Susie and I when
we dated long distance first because we we met in
the ESPN news room in the late nineties, and then
she moved out to California, where she launched the Southern
California Sports for Ford for the Regional Sports Network of
Los Angeles. She was the first anchor of of you know,
(01:03:57):
the of the of all these Fox Sports directionals, the
one in Los Angeles, and so she was working out here,
and whenever I had time off from sports and our
fly out in Southern California, so a buddy of mine,
a buddy of mine team offered me to play at
bel Air Country Club. He vaunted Valcalla Hallow Grounds in
(01:04:23):
um in Westwood, in bel Air, you know, just north
of Westwood, and you know, I go there and I'm like,
it's my eyes are wide open. You know, not only
just because it's such a you know, uh, such a
famous place in Los Angeles to play golf, but there's
a lot of celebrities that are members of the club.
And I just thought to myself, you know, maybe I'll
(01:04:43):
see you one right, Okay, So I'm a little awe struck,
little star struck. I key off on the first fairway
to raise tea box. You hit it. You hit it
basically towards the U c. L A campus you could
see in the distance, and I ferry right. I sliced
it a little bit. I'm nervous. Plus I'm not good,
and your golf shirts weighing you down. Give golf shirt, yes,
(01:05:06):
but you know, but that's fine to wear a golf
shirt there. I don't need a broadcast at any rate.
So I'm I slice it a little bit. And and
the first fairway runs next to the eighteenth fairway, And
as I'm standing over my golf ball, a golf cart
comes careening up from the eighteen fairway into my fairway
(01:05:31):
as I'm getting ready to hit the ball, and some
guy goes, wait a minute, and I look up and
it's James Garner golf cart holding a golf ball in
between his thumb and four fingers and saying, is this doorball?
(01:05:54):
And I'm like, uh no, serve, this is my ball.
And he goes because somebody's hitting my ball, drives off
and the crazy thing is Matt Davis was driving golf card. Wow.
(01:06:14):
I'm like, so, I'm like thinking my whole time, like
maybe I'll see your celebrity out there. One shot in
for the round, one shot into the round. James Garner
in a golf cart driven by Mac Davis. You know,
the quarterback from North Dallas forty famous songwriter who you
know in the ghetto for for Elvis's crazy and he's
(01:06:36):
person at me. That's great, one of my favorite stories.
It's fantastic. It was fantastic. Oh gosh, this had to
be the early um early off. Yeah, what did you
what did you shoot that round? Did that rattle you
(01:06:56):
for the whole round? No? I was like I was psyched.
Games Garner just cursed me out for some reason for
a two dollar titleist one. He just like held a
ball like he was like, his face is all scrunched up.
He was really pissed. Right finger just jam in my
face this ball. That's great, but of course I looked
(01:07:20):
down immediately at the ball. I was almost short. I
had to check, of course, yeah, of course, thankfually, it
was actually my ball. It was The York The New
York Times. Oh bit for James Garner was and it
made me want to go back and watch some of
these old old films and watch the Rockford Files. Yeah, totally.
(01:07:42):
But the americanization of Emily is one that I've never
seen before that Garner said was his favorite. And it
was written by Patty Chayevski, who wrote Network, which I
don't know you guys have. Yeah, I watched. I watched
your homework assignment for being in this profession, which you
must and and so I've never seen that. I gotta
(01:08:02):
go watch it. That's one of the things that I
will definitely. Well, you've got a couple of flights coming up,
so I do one to Ohio coming up very shortly
and UH and then a car ride up to UH
up to Oxnard, California to see the Cowboys. I'm looking
forward to that. We have an international shoutout. Well, if
you want to tap dance for two seconds like dancing,
(01:08:24):
I've well, I was, I was engrossed in this James
Garner story. I mean, what do you want me to do?
Should I get John Clayton on? He's pacing around two
on the phone, you know if I don't know if
he's got clearance from ESPN to come on the podcast.
John Clayton. I saw him at at Combine and I
definitely had a double check for the ponytail and it
wasn't there. It's not there. It's not there. That would
(01:08:46):
be amazing if he actually if that whole commercial is true,
it would be the greatest thing. Rich I will, I will.
I was skeptical of it. You bashed it flat out.
The Burger Draft, Yeah, the Burger can I can I
get a me a couple on the Burger Draft for
you guys. It was a blast. It was a lot
of fun. I gotta be full full disclosure. We had it.
(01:09:06):
We had a really fun time. Happy birthdays to you both,
Thank you, thank you. And in case you missed it,
full recap written on Chris Brockman dot com right now
where you where you can check all that out. So,
like like I said, we went to twenty six Beach
in Marina del Rey, famous for their exotic burgers. So
(01:09:27):
we get there there's ten of us. Apparently Jimmy Kimmel
and Stoop Dogg had just been there. They shot something
for Jimmy Kimmel alive there maybe I think, I think
Snoop is having a different type of draft. Um. And
so we get there. They they've got, you know, thirty
burgers on the menu. You kind of go through their
really exotic looking uh and then everyone kind of goes
(01:09:48):
through and makes their choice. And then when the burgers
come out in front of you, they're cutting half. And
like I said, then we draw draft selections out of
the hat and you pick. People were wheeling and dealing.
There were Yeah, there were beers for a quarter of
this burger. I don't understand what it's. I don't understand
what burger draft. Okay, so it's like you pick up burger.
(01:10:09):
So like say I picked the New York mile High
it was called it was they're all they're all beef
patty based and then they have toppics on top. So
the New York Burger had corned beef. If I wanted
to taste that burger, I had while you had to
it depended on your draft position. So I selected that burger,
but it went both halves went in the top four
(01:10:31):
picks and I picked number six, so I didn't get
to even eat the burger that I chose. Yeah, so
or you could just going but it's it's fun. Yeah,
but it makes it fun because you know, you're kind
of like, oh man, I wanted that choice tasty burger?
Do you order a disgusting looking burger? So somebody gets
(01:10:52):
stuck with that law. Law being the hillbilly that he is,
uh selected the peanut, butter and jelly burger and that
ended up being right to try to screw someone who
had a high pick, thinking that one of the halves
would last on the back end of the snake, which
it did. And then did you end up getting ended up?
I didn't. I didn't draft it, but I ended up
(01:11:14):
wanting to try it because the people that got it
said it was actually delicious. So I traded a quarter
of one of my sandwiches for this and it was delicious. Yeah.
It's just kind of a way to spice up rich
you gotta get into the moment. It's a way to
spice up just a regular dinner. It's you know, it's
competition wise. It was competitive. There was there was wheeling
(01:11:34):
and dealings. People were pissed and like there are Buddy Eric,
I made him. He's like, oh, I could eat another
one of these? And I challenged him like I don't
think you could. And I was gonna pay his entire
tab if he could. So we got like side bets
going on if you could eat another hole Burger. It
was fantastic. Like I said, if your skeptical, check out
the recap on Chris Brockman dot com and you'll be convinced.
(01:11:55):
Try it with your buddies. Trust me, it was great. Yeah,
you had to be there. I mean you did because
you have to be. I was skeptical, but in the
moment it was a lot of fun. Yeah. They look
they put us in a whole separate room like they
knew something was going to go down, and so they
just wanted us. No no golf shirt, no golf shirts,
(01:12:16):
no no, no bucking cutter. Alright, golf shirts for good reason.
I'll look good at him. I'm on TV, all right,
do you service in the international shotout? Well, here's the thing.
It's so cold in this room. Rich like service services. Uh,
(01:12:38):
service is very very sketchy in here. Man, oh man,
I may not. I may not. I may not have one.
I may not. Oh wait, I got one. I got one.
How about I'm I'm doubly international, says Ramsey, singer. He
is from the UK but living in Zanzibar, and he
tweeted out a picture he's he is wearing his Punters
(01:13:01):
or People Too shirts, so that's a lot. Buddy stands
the bar one of my favorite Billy Joelson's UK. Here
I come. Let's say great bar in Santa Monica. Okay, guys,
I will see you soon. Yeah, I see you see
shortly travels travels back, brother, stay listening. Friends,
