Speaker 1 (00:01):
Let's in our first episode of the off save that
drooled on my solf. Nope, he's a dog. I love
my sink. Pick your musty up the shop. If I'd
say everything wrong, I'm leaving me and it was the
best day of my life. Welcome back to the Slim
(00:21):
Show podcast presented by Vicestar, where we're not afraid to
mess up, We're not afraid to have a little fun.
Come on, and where you'll have your stories about your
favorite Jaguars from the people who know the best. This
week we have Sean tell Baker, who is an Elix
to alumni, a dog mom, and it's also the fiancee
(00:43):
of wide receiver d j Art. Welcome. Let's talk about
first this crazy NFL pasing, what happened so far and
how you guys have been handling it. I know, yes,
the players handle it obviously so much more, but it
also is a grind for you guys at home because
you have to change up your life as well. Yeah,
(01:04):
it's been different. Um. I will say that the Jaguars
have been doing such a good job about making sure
that they've been safe, so it's been relatively easy for
us to just kind of continue what we were doing
at the beginning of the year with quarantine and isolation
and whatnot. But it's different. The games are different. Um,
not really being able to go to the away games
(01:24):
is different. But we're glad football is back, and I
think that's the big thing that we even have football
at all. Were you someone that went so i'll be
away games before? No? I didn't. So it's not really
like I'm missing much that I had before, but it
would have been nice to have the option, you know,
right especially, I'm super bummed. I've always wanted to go
(01:45):
to Green Bay exactly. They're not bringing the broadcast crew
this year, and that was like the one, like Milestone
Stadium I wanted to go to. So I agree with you.
It would be cool to like kind of pick and choose,
like I really want to go still to Green Bay
and see it. Yes, acts absolutely, and yeah, yeah you
get it. I get it. Yes, indeed. So take me.
(02:07):
Let's start at the beginning. Let's go away on back.
Oh boy, how did you? Indeed? J Meat, We're like,
it's like a love story I'm hosting right now. Yeah,
it's um okay, So well, he actually first messaged me
on Twitter before I had even gotten to l s U,
so I'll give him those credits. Uh. And then there
was one day where we were walking on campus and
(02:28):
we had walked past each other after having communicated online,
and we both awkwardly looked at each other and we're like,
I think I need to give him a hug. I
didn't think I need to give her a hug to
beat like awkwardly hugged each other in the quad at
l s U. And it started everything. Like you know,
we started meeting up on campus and doing things together
(02:48):
like getting pizza, little things. Um. That sparked our dating
freshman year at seventeen, which is insane, is insane, and
it's so unheard of. I feel like like like we
asked like dating college, but like be together this entire
time and like stick with him, Like he began obviously
as a huge, big time athlete at l s U.
(03:09):
But did you ever like, did you know this was
going to happen? No, I don't think either of us
could have predicted this happening this way. We're excited, of course,
and I think at the end of the day, we
had those dreams and the belief that he would go
on to be great because I do believe hard work
pays off, and I've never seen him work anything less
than incredibly hard. So he's you know, it's it's it
(03:33):
was given and the way that was expected per se
but not necessarily expected. I don't know if that makes sense,
but it okay. I mean, like everyone says, like, you
have a dream of playing in the NFL, but especially
for DJ, he succeeded so quickly. Also, yeah, I gotta
give him a lot of credit. He's worked really hard.
(03:55):
I love that. So what did you major in a
l s U? Like? What did you go to l
s U For? I started going UM as an English
major because I thought I wanted to go to law school.
UM that quickly turned into kinesiology because I was a
gymnastics coach all through college, and that quickly turned into
Communication studies, which is all left field. So um here
(04:17):
I am. Now I'm major in communication studies and minored
in Spanish. Don't actually speak it, but I understand it
pretty well. Very nice. Okay, So how does that lead
to Jackson? I saw you were you were coaching UM
gymnastics here in Jack's right, Yeah, I do. I still
every once in a while pop in and coach, which
is so awesome. I just love the little ones. It's been.
It made college a whole lot more joyful for me,
(04:39):
and um that was something that DJ has also said
was he's been able to enjoy the the energy that
children bring a little bit more because we were always
around kids. So yeah, it's just nice to do. It's fun.
I just I can't hold it in any longer. You
have to tell everyone because DJ is so great with kids.
Every community, the event, he's sitting down playing with them.
(05:02):
We all remember when he taught that little boy to
swim at the y m c A. Oh my god,
so cute. So tell everyone the good news. Well, we
are expecting our own little person coming twenty twenty one.
Oh my gosh. And that's honestly right around the corner.
(05:23):
So perfect plan. Or what's going on with with the
baby not exactly, not exactly the plan, but in incredibly
exciting surprise instead. So you know, we uh did have
plans on getting married next June. I'm not gonna force
(05:44):
myself into a wedding dress after having a baby. So
here we are, but we were problemed. We're he's so
excited and it's so exciting to see him transition over
into becoming a dad. It's so cool. He's going to
be an awesome dad. And you were saying, he's basically
telling the entire city of Jacksonville, right, Yeah, oh yeah,
He's told way more people than I've told, which is hilarious.
(06:07):
But I can't even blame him. He's just excited. We
were talking. I want to say it was like two
weeks ago. We were talking about your engagement process, and
I was asking him if he was nervous because he
did it so well, like he had the photographer ready,
get everything ready to go, and he said he wasn't
more so nervous, like he knew you were going to
say yes, but he wanted to be so extremely perfect
(06:28):
that it was like everything the way you wanted, so
it was it was exactly the way that I wanted
it to be. I don't think he necessarily remembers me
telling him before that I wanted to get engaged on
the beach because you know, the first half of my
life was spent in Hawaii, and so I love the
beach and I we talked about it afterwards, and he
(06:49):
was like, oh no, I didn't really remember that, but
worked out great. It was it was absolutely perfect. I
had no idea it was happening, and lots of tears
were shad but the happiest of tears. So he didn't
He did a great job. I love that he posted
the crying pics. It's like, you guys look all sweet
and nice and it's like the the ugly cry that
(07:10):
every girl has. Of course, of course, um and Rick
Wilson actually took our pictures, so thanks to him for
doving a phenomenal job on those. So you are a
casually you're from Hawaii. Yeah, that's where I was born,
um and spent like the first half of my life
and military child, so I bounced around a little bit,
(07:31):
but I did spend a majority of my time bouncing
around in Hawaii, and then we really ended up in
Louisiana for pretty much the second half of my life.
Very nice and l s U Man, that is such
an incredible school. DJ seems so so passionate about it,
So it probably is awesome that you guys share that,
you know, one being alumni, but he seems like above
(07:54):
alumni level. Yeah, it's really cool getting to share that
with him, like, you know, being an l S U
student was cool, and seeing L s U football was
an experience that I still can't necessarily put words to.
But seeing the way that they look at him and
they view him, especially now in the league, is so cool.
So yeah, it's it's it's awesome being able to go
(08:17):
back and feel how different and how wonderful it is,
you know, you know, reminiscing in things of course, Yeah,
he reps it. This this new dance that's going on
that he was telling me about. Touchdown dances are absurd sometimes,
(08:37):
where did you even think of that? Like, tell me
he practices at home and that's where he gets it from.
I can't say I've seen him physically practice, although he
probably does what I'm not looking. But he does enjoy
talking about it, so he'll let me know, like, hey,
what do you think about this this weekend? I'm like, yeah,
do it? Go for it? Why not? So he that's fun.
That's the one thing you'll do. Yes. I always when
(09:00):
you describe DJ, at least around the facility and with
the team, always happy, like always smiling, never a bad day,
it seems like, so how do you describe him? Like,
is he different at home than he is at the stadium.
You say, that's really him. He's got such a good
he's so calm, he's very even tempered. Um and he
for the most part, is really excited. I'm actually way
(09:23):
more bubbles than he is. I have a lot more um,
just energy, I guess. So it's an even bouncing off
of each other where he's able to be, you know,
happy and energetic at work and then come home and
kind of relax a little bit more while I'm just
kind of bouncing off the walls for him. Yeah, you
guys seem like kind of like a chill couple, like
(09:44):
you're both so young, but like at least what what
DJ post on Instagram, Like, you guys are like cooking
at home a lot, watching SpongeBob. Of course DJ always
talk about that mutual love for SpongeBob. You guys just
kind of like seem like old souls almost. Yeah. I
guess could say that maybe Louisiana has something to do
with it, you know that slower paced just kind of
(10:05):
hanging out in chilling. But we just we we enjoy
each other's company, We hang out and have a good
time all the time. Yes, and of course the dogs
are there. Bam bam. Forgive me. I do not know
the new one's name, but there was yes, Dundee. How
can I forget that? He was telling me about the office.
Like they seemed like the two most love dogs in America.
(10:28):
Like there's such a part of your guy's life. They
are a hot mess, but they are the sweetest babies
on the planet. We couldn't have asked for any better
of dogs, although we had no idea that as an
Australian shepherd, Dundee would be so high energy. Um, he's
pretty a d h D. But they're the best. Oh gosh,
(10:52):
I love that. So tell me what you do in
your spare time here in Jack, Like I'm always seeing
your your around Jack's going to coffee shops, doing yoga,
So what fills your time. I've been doing a lot
of that. Um, you know, less of that with having
to be aware of who I'm around and um, what
crowds I'm in. So I haven't been out and about
too much. Um. Coffee shops are always nice because you
(11:13):
can sit outside. I'll take the dogs out for walks,
We'll go to the park, will run around. The dogs
are a good portion of the time that I spend
doing anything. So, yeah, hanging out with some people and
you know, just relax and trying to get through this
odd time as best I can. I know what, man,
(11:34):
I can say, crazy crazy time. But do you it
seems like you guys really enjoy Jack's Like did you
always foresee like not coming here, but like do you
foresee yourself maybe staying here? And like in calling this
home for a while. We could totally call this home
for a while. It's one of those things that a
time will tell. But as of now, we do love
(11:55):
being out here. Like I said, the beach being twenty
minutes away is a major plus. So and you know,
once we have our little one here, it'll be a
whole different experience. So we'll really have to see then. Yeah,
And it seems like everyone, at least players that have
kids always talk about what a great town Jacks is
to raise a family, and that was a big proponent
in them coming here. Yeah, I've definitely seen a lot
(12:17):
of that m hm. And with that, I'm always talking
to players about you know, family, kids, And it seems
like you've gotten to know some of the wives, the girlfriends,
the fiances, like having that support system of kind of
like a family unit here when you guys are so
far away from home. Has that helped. Yeah, it's actually
been really great being able to reach out to other
(12:38):
women who understand what we're going through. Because it is
a it's a different life. It can be a little
weird sometimes and not everybody necessarily gets where we're coming from.
So it's always great to have other people that are,
you know, just on the same page and get where
you're coming from. M and you guys seem like a
(12:58):
very family oriented group a couple. I will never forget.
My biggest TV mess up of my life was my
first sideline hit in two thousand when was it two
thousand night? I went up to the stands to meet
DJ's parents because I was gonna put them on TV
and I was going to interview them, and they told
(13:19):
me their names and it was all great. They were
so nice, and I said on live TV that their
names were Darryl and Cheryl. Yeah, I'm here, we're Cheryl
Shark like, oh yeah, I remember that. But it's okay,
it happens. Talking about that. Thanks, give it dope. It's okay,
it happens. It does. Yes, Um, Darryl and the Shirley
(13:44):
are awesome, but you tried Darryl and Cheryl. I like
the guys at work. Never let me live that down. Yeah, yeah,
that's that's a good one. Though. I will say if
they were Darryl and Cheryld that would be a hoot
of a couple. And there's such nice people. She just
kind of looked at me and I was like, Yeah,
(14:05):
it's not your name, stand your name. We're going to
smooth on. So tell me about DJ is so involved
in the community, always like seems to genuinely enjoy going
out and doing things, and he always is really involved
with like Night to Shine with the Tim Tebow Tim
Tebow Foundation and Special Olympics. And I know there's a
(14:26):
connection there with your family that I had no idea about,
and it makes sense why he's super passionate about that. Yeah. So,
my older brother, who is a year and a half
older than me, actually has autism. It's mild, but we
grew up understanding that he had special needs, and he
was my best friend growing up because we were, you know,
right there with each other and so um growing up
(14:47):
and seeing that life being a little bit different than
you know, if you grow up without those special needs
UM put a special place in my heart, of course.
So when I got to college, they actually offer these
UM events called Friday Night Out where you get to
go hang out with other high school and college aged
(15:09):
individuals who have special needs such as autism, down syndrome, etcetera.
And DJ would join me in those events and it
was it was good fun. We would just go and
play Monopoly or you know, and just have a good
time with people who wanted to have a good time.
And it's yeah, it's it's it's it's a very special
place in both of our hearts. I love that. That's
(15:31):
so cool that he would do that, even with you
in college. Yeah, he's awesome. Definitely speaks to his character,
that's for sure. He's awesome. So what's it like with
away games? I guess you could say, because I know
you go to all the home names like what kind
of fan are you? Are you like jumping up and down?
Like going nuts? Are you more chill? Are you nervous?
Like DJ has been playing incredible this year. You get
(15:53):
a chance to watch many touchdowns, So what's that like?
I am all over the place, UM, I not to
surround myself with too many people on game days just
because I don't want to scream anyone's head off, but
totally in front of the TV losing my mind. Um,
this season is a little bit different. I have my
Haneken zero next to me while I'm watching the game.
(16:17):
But yeah, I definitely love going out there and watching
him play. So yeah, and then away games, are you
just like chilling on the couch where you can like
freely scream, Then, yeah, chilling on the couch. Both dogs
noggling up under me. They have their jerseys on and
they're looking at me like I'm crazy because I'm yelling
every two minutes. But yes, that's that's the best Sundays
(16:40):
for sure. I love that. Well, here's the hoping DJ
keeps up with the success he has. He's been killing it.
Thank you so much for joining the Shillin Show. Yeah, thanks, Ashlynn,
of course, all right, I will be a big congrats
to the Chart family on their pregnancy. That song they
see start to Do to Do to Do ready to
(17:02):
take on a whole new level. John Tell Baker, you're fabulous.
Thank you for joining the Shlynn Show, Shoe dude, and
thank you to everyone who keeps this fine program up
and running all the time. We'll see you next time
on The Shlund Show. See
