Speaker 1 (00:01):
Let's end our first episode of the office that I
drooled on my soap non stop. He's a doll, I
love my sink. Pick here musty at the shop. If
I say everything wrong, I'm reading me. And it was
the best day of my life. Welcome to the Slim
Show Podcast presented by by Star, where we're not afraid

(00:25):
to mess up, We're not afraid to have a little fun.
Come on. This time, we have Mr one thousand yards,
but no even better than we have his mama, his
number one fan, Miss Latrisa, is not near as relaxed
as James is about getting the credit he deserves and
we're here for it. Okay, So, Miss Latrisa, if you

(00:47):
could try to summarize this year of James Robinson. I
go back to training camp and he's definitely started to
make a splash and we started recognizing him. But like,
all right, you know, it's probably gonna makes the team.
And now when people ask me about him, like, if
you would have told me that this is gonna happen,
you would be lying because no one saw this coming,

(01:08):
at least from our standpoint. But I'm sure you have
a different story. M H. Well, I can say that um,
I'm not surprised. I mean, James is someone like you know,
he's quiet, everybody knows he's quiet. And then here it
goes like we've all we actually just been waiting for

(01:28):
this moment. It's kind of like it's more or less
like we're not surprised. We knew it was coming, we
just didn't know when. So rewind back to the draft,
it was almost like, Okay, we were the type of
family that had all the names of the running backs
that was going, going, going, and then James name is
up next, and then they don't get caught. We're like, okay,

(01:49):
well let's just see what happens that someone's gonna call.
And then fast forward to training camp. I know James,
he's gonna go in. He's gonna do what he has
to do. I'm not worried about it, not even to it.
Like he's the type of person that tells us, well,
don't get your hopes to you know, because he he
doesn't think like we think. But seeing him playing from five,

(02:11):
we knew it was just the waiting. It was a
winning game for us. And you mentioned the draft and
we always asked James about this, like, ah, the chip
on your shoulder has to be huge. I mean, you
you break all these records in high school and then
you don't get the college offers you want, and now
you're going to your setten record records at Illinois State
and you go undrafted and no one gets why now

(02:33):
when you see success. But we asked him, is the
chip on the shoulder, like how big is He's like,
oh no, it's okay, I don't have it? Is he lying?
Is it? There? Um? The only thing that's a chip?
I think that's just James is like he's a person
to letting things roll off the shoulder and you know
it all and going on to the next thing. That's

(02:55):
how he's always been. He doesn't do well, he just
moves on. And I guess that's just has been his life.
Like when you say that, you know he's been passed over,
passed over. That that's been james story for as long
as I can remember. So for me as a parent,
I've always told him, you know, hey, moving on, Like,

(03:16):
just continue to do what you're doing and continue to perform.
That's that's all they can do. You know, someone's gonna
recognize when somebody's gonna see and here we are now,
so man, this is I mean, if if you guys
I have Doug up takes from I'm talking about Peewee
Pop Warner, James have been it since then. So I

(03:40):
love it and as a mom is not frustrating though,
Like we can say, okay, James, he doesn't have the chip.
But for you, like, do you want to go to
some of these NFL teams and be like, hello, what
were you missing? Yeah? I have, I've said it, but
I'm telling you that James is a person that keeps
the family low profile, don't you know, because we know

(04:02):
how he is. He just like whatever, you know, moving
on and we're like like, mom, just chill, it'd be okay.
And I have to trust you know. It's been a
story from day one, so it's kind of like, hey,
all right, I'm gonna trust you on this and I
trust them and I've been trusting them and the things
come so m hmm it's paid off since all right,

(04:24):
So if it was up to you it definitely some
NFL scouts would have gotten a call by now probably
fair to same. So what do you think I mean?
You say his story going back to Peee is he's
always had it but he's over we always been overlooked.
Why do you think he has been overlooked? And maybe
what does that taught him? You think now going into

(04:45):
being a professional, it definitely seems like some of those
values have carried on. I don't know the reason behind it.
I mean, I just, for the life of me, I've
I've I've sat down, I've wrote, you know, like daily
journals about things that's happened with James, and I'm asking guy, like, Okay,
why why is it that James story is this? You know,

(05:06):
like he's one of the greatest kids that apparently even
Max for you know what I mean, like even after
so he's just a great kid period. I've never had
trouble out of him. So for me, it's like, why, well,
maybe this is teaching him that, you know, just keep working. Stay.
Of course, things will happen, maybe not when you want
them to, but they will happen. And it's taught us,

(05:30):
not him, because he's always had patients, but it's taught
us to have patience and say, just have that faith
because it's going to happen. You know, when you're you know,
that close with God and you you continue to have
their relationship with God. I understand that he has already
said this back and we have to just follow it.
And that's the same thing with James. I've seen him.

(05:52):
I haven't seen James cry much. I mean even I've
never cried or anything. I don't care. He broke his
arm when he was little, and hey, guess what, he
didn't cry. Yeah, So it's this is kind of like, hey,
he moved, he let things roll off his shoulder and
keep moving. That's just how it is, you know. So

(06:13):
I don't know. I just believe that this is bad
packed and that this is what he has set for him.
I mean, he's a tough kid very much. So we
have seen that because he'll go run someone over and
come right back and do it again and no problem attitude.
I remember, I'm I'm I wish, I just wish you
guys knew like it to us, Will will be screaming

(06:34):
and he's like mom type down over there. I love
it well, sadly, it's it's awesome he's having the successful
of the year. But I'm sure to you guys, it
makes a little more difficult because we're in this pandemic
and he has all the success. So I wonder where
do you watch his games? Are you able to travel

(06:54):
some or are you stuck on the couch? How are
you living this season with him? Anybody knows James Rup
some family and they're going where James. So um, in
the beginning of the season, we were flying back and
forth from Rockford to Florida, and then um, like that
second game, I think it was like three something like that,

(07:16):
we were moved there, like we moved to forward because
we needed to be close to James. James wanted us
close to him. So you know, we just moved here,
packed up, moved here, and we're here. So when it's
away games, because if we don't know, you know, if
you're gonna have fans, he really we really can't see
him after the game. So the best thing for us
to do is grab a spot on the couch and

(07:38):
watch from home. So that's what we do for away games.
But we are at every home game tailgating and I
love it. So what kind of what kind of fan
are you? Mom fan? I guess I should say, because
that's a different level of fanner. Are you calm, cool, collected?
Are we going to hear you from the field? Oh,
you're gonna hear You're going to hear me. I'm trying

(08:01):
to just sit and it doesn't have As far as
I can remember, I am a loud as ever does
James like that? Are you like, mom, I hear you
from here? Actually, he's so used to it. It's like
we have a thing we call it. Well, when he
was playing in high school, it was like, okay, so
today it's gonna be yelling Fridays and no boys Saturdays.

(08:24):
Got the college is called screaming Saturdays, no voice Sundays.
So now it's Saturday screaming, no voice mondays. Yes, it's progressed.
I love that. So UM coach Moron always jokes about
Santa offensive coordinator Jane Gruden. They say that they try
to get under a skin and they'll take on my

(08:45):
practice purposely. And nothing frazzled him. But I know moms
get under skin better than anyone. So is there something
that has rattled James that you can tell us, because
as of right now, we have found nothing. I mean,
you can call ma any thing, you can do anything
to him. Josh Allen throws water bottles at him during
press conferences. Don't even flinch. Nothing problems him has to

(09:08):
be the person, because I mean, I can get under
skin with anything, but he's when he's just out and
about and endorsed things nobody gets and he's just like, oh,
just keep it moving. I don't know. I don't know
what someone could do, because that's just who he is.
For me, I'll ask him the same question over and

(09:29):
over and over again, and then it gets irritated. So
maybe that's the secret. All right, it's very mom of you.
I get that. I get annoyed when my mom does
that too. Just asked me the same question for two weeks.
Maybe we'll start that with press conference. Dosn't see how
it works. They mom already asked it, Okay. I always

(09:52):
I've had a few moms on Michelin Show podcast, and
I always give them the opportunity because my mom, especially
when boys are around, he always tells embarrassing stories. And
there's like three that are her go to Is there
like go to story for James or James is gonna
cringe hearing this And you're allowed to tell us without
him being mad he for the rest of his life. No,

(10:14):
because he's I'm telling you, he's that person, Like, do
you really have to keep prying to get to him.
Otherwise he's just like okay, if that's what you want
to do and moving on. He's not I mean, I
don't have any stories like that. Like that's just a

(10:35):
good kid. Yeah, like overall, like just a good kid. Now.
I have two other kids now my girls are something different.
But Jane, he was just like straight focus. I've never
had a problem, not with anything. He was just just
like a mad temper, does what he's supposed to do. Kids.

(10:58):
Mm hmm. That girls are a different story. I can
attest to that. I was talking to James back in
August and I have just met him, and he came
on one of our videos. And obviously you know about
Gardner Minshew and the Minshew magic and Gardner always rocks
a bandana. That's his look. Um, James comes on the
video and he's rocking a bandanna. I'm like, wait a second,

(11:21):
you're copying Gardner Minshew, aren't you. He's like, I swear
the bandana is my thing. So can you attest to
that or or was he copying Gardner this whole time?
That's James thing. He wears a bandana every day? Why
every day I do? It's here so I'm telling you,
every day I can just finish his hair, he's putting

(11:42):
a bandana. If he leaves out of the house, he
has a bandona. And this has been going on for years.
Like why is that? I don't know. I don't know.
If it's a comfort thing where he just liked the
way it looks and he has to have He has
every color bandana you could possibly think of. He had. Yeah,
we had to. James has a clothing line our brand

(12:03):
now and we had to incorporate bandannas with that. Like
he's you don't get that guy. He's not much he'll
wear at every now and then, but a bandanna guy. Okay,
So I meant to ask you about that clothing line.
I've seen some of it on social media. So what
was the thought behind on it? And are you involved

(12:25):
some and getting it going? Oh yeah, I'm heavily involved,
like the person the director. Yeah, it's it's more or
less to you know, Phil James is a brand behind him.
He's an easy one guy. We try to follow that.
But um, we have lots of products coming. We're but

(12:47):
he's opening We're opening a store in Jacksonville. Actually, Oh,
I love that. We're looking to open up in the avenue.
So we're still working on a couple of things, but
that's where we're gonna angle everything to go and avenues.
That is awesome. Okay, that's a whole different ball name
now that I know that, I'll have to visit the store. Yeah,

(13:07):
we have online psyche too as well, so you can't
order online, so cyber Monday Deals. It's interesting. I've only
covered the league a couple of years to my fourth year,
but I've noticed such a shift these last four years.
Is yes, they're athletes on the field, but especially now
these up and coming guys, they've recognized that there is
this platform that they can use for their brand. And

(13:30):
it seems like all these guys, whether it's their social
media presence or a clothing store like James, there's this
off the field thing that everyone wants to pursue and
it's definitely an incredible business opportunity. But what needs you
guys want to go that direction? The direction knowing I'll
just say this, so coming from where James and I
are from, in Rockford, Illinoy, there's a lot of talent

(13:53):
there and a lot of that talent gets overlooked because
don't come there and that's the reality of it. So
for us, it was always helping UM. You know, kids
that are don't have the resources to get to where
they need to be, you know, as far as sports goes,
as far school goes, as far as getting things that
they need on a day. We work with the organization

(14:15):
UM called Beautiful Beginning's Community Outreach, and James has been
a mentor to some of the kids their way before
you know this, been a mentor, did some UM conditioning
like cants, those kind of things, came in and spoke
to some of the kids. UM. A lot of the guys,
a lot of the boys there are really really you know,
they love James. He's a big inspiration for them. So

(14:38):
they love to see him come and you know, sign things,
give them things, give them advice on how they should
start conditioning, how they should eat, those type of things.
It's been a great journey. I mean, as far as
I know, we'll work with we're trying to we're actually
looking for UM nonprofits in Jacksonville as well in Florida
to work with to continue that, you know, because he's

(14:59):
here and not in Radford anymore. But we do hate
a lot of things kind of virtually to try to
keep it going in Rockford. That's incredible, especially just his
rookie year and you guys already getting started with this.
It's pretty cool to see. Yeah, alright, I have one
more for you because well, I guess I have two
more because I've been told by our pr staff that

(15:22):
James doesn't share much, but he does share his love
for his two pups, Benji and Lenny. I mean, though
they are spoiled what I'm talking like, they're it's almost
like you're talking to a child and they know, like
they're very smart, beautiful dogs. Like you can walk in

(15:45):
the house and you'll say, hey, how you doing Benji?
How you doing Laddy? And they're like, oh, like hey,
how you doing? Or um I recall a time where
in Radford before James left or whatever or for Florida, Um,
they learned how to open our doors. And so Benjie

(16:06):
is more he's the guy. He's the real, like the
real guy, Like I move with I want to move
the letty. You can tell her to go do something,
She'll open the door and go do it, bring it
back to you, you know, like they're they're those kind
of dogs. But he's in love with those dogs. Well,
I'll tell you he's he's that guy. He's he's a
dog lovel for sure. Kid. They don't want him going anywhere.

(16:29):
He don't want them going anywhere when he's at home
there right next to him. That's great, all right. So
he is, uh, he's a Pro Bowl dog guy. And
I'm going to give give you the platform because we're
starting the conversation, you know, offensive Rookie of the Year
Pro Bowl votes. And it's a little different this year
obviously with her no being Pro Bowl Game, but it

(16:50):
was up to his mom. How would you pitch why
James Robinson should make the Pro Bowl this year? Let's
see I never see her. I believe that James is
that he should be the Pro Bowl pick because he's
that guy that you can always depend on. He's consistent,

(17:11):
he's hard work, he's you know, he works hard. He's
diligent about everything that he does. He is always always
in a game. He always moves on from the next
play whenever a play is played. So if you're looking
for someone that's all about football and all about football
on and off the field, is James. He has i Q.

(17:33):
He has everything you need. If you're looking for a back,
a great back and a great person, he has James
has it. Yes, you have my vote. That was a
great spiel. We'll send that to everyone. And he sounds
like he's a Pro Bowl son as well. He is.
He's James, is it? I mean, I don't even I

(17:53):
don't even want to sound bias, because I can tell
you this. When people ask me years ago about you know,
I heard just that is good or you know, I
never was like, yes he is. I'll tell them this
because I'm of course they're gonna think I'm biased. So
I will say, you know what, come to a game
and I'll let you be to do. And every time
I said there, it was like, wow, he is amazing,

(18:16):
even at a young age like James, I don't know what,
I don't know. I just say he's a chosen me
because a lot of football, a lot of learning, learn
how to protect uself, learning how to take care of
his body. I mean, he's done it all. He's been
underrated forever and he still comes out on that. You

(18:36):
have a great, humble approach to the game. It's definitely
refreshing and very fun to follow. I feel like I
know him so much better now. So thank you for
sharing that with us. You are very welcome. Thank you
guys for having me. Of course, we'll talk to you soon.
And let's hope that Field gets jamed in the Pro Bowl. Hope.
So all right, I'll talk to you soon. Okay, thank

(18:58):
you for feeling I told you if she was fired
up for her son. Don't mess with a mom talking
about her pride and joy son. I know this because
my mom likes my brother Patrick way more than she
likes me. It's fine, I don't even care. Thank you
Audio Joseph for making this sound pretty and we will
see you next time on the Slim Show. H
