Alfonso X nació en Toledo en 1221, heredó el trono de Castilla y de León después de que sus padres, Fernando III de Castilla y Beatriz de Suabia, unificaran los dos reinos. Mientras tanto, al-Andalus ya había empezado a fragmentarse y Alfonso contribuyó a su decadencia: en 1243 conquistó Murcia y años más tarde extendió el dominio castellano-leonés hasta Cádiz. La obra magna de Alfonso X está relacionada con la ciencia, concretamente con la Astronomía.
