Durante el segundo apagón surgieron toda clase de teorías que trataban de explicar la anómala actividad solar. Aunque la ciencia carecía de respuestas concluyentes a lo que estaba ocurriendo, algunos científicos se esforzaron por explicarlo de manera divulgativa.
Unas buscaban explicaciones religiosas, de manera similar a lo que hizo la Secta del Sol Negro durante el primer apagón. Otras se basaban en una cierta espiritualidad más próxima al ecologismo. De todas ellas, la que más predicamento tuvo fue la propugnada por el Club Gaia.
El Club Gaia era un colectivo ecologista que empezó a operar en el año 2017. Aunque sus actividades públicas se centraban en conferencias y otras actividades de concienciación, algunos de sus miembros participaron en acciones ecoterroristas. Se sabe que estuvieron relacionados con la quema de campos de cultivos transgénicos, con el sabotaje de centrales nucleares y con la liberación de animales de centros de investigación.
