Este suceso ocurrió un verano del siglo XIX. Mr. Shuttleworthy, uno de los ciudadanos más ricos y respetables del vecindario, había desaparecido hacía varios días en unas circunstancias que dieron pie a sospechar que se trataba de un crimen.
Era sábado por la mañana, y Mr. Shuttleworthy salió temprano. La ciudad se encontraba a unas quince millas de distancia. Shuttleworthy tenía la intención de volver por la noche. Sin embargo, dos horas después de su partida su caballo volvió sin él.
