Supermarket and Bill making his way here.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
Martin Inglesby has a press conference duty here in the
CAA tournament, So we appreciate Bill Phillips coming and speaking
with us.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Here on the postgame show.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
So we'll hand the headset over to Billy can get
set up here and coach, thank you so much, first
off for joining us. And it was a game where
you led by ninety. They battled back, as teams do,
especially in March. Seventy to seventy was account and you
get to that final media timeout, which has not been
great for Delaware throughout the season. This time you found
(00:41):
a way to win the basketball game. How'd you weather
that storm and come out with a victory.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
We said we were up by nineteen. The guy that
seems like a long long time ago, don't it. But this,
you know, this is March, right. They showed a lot
of heart. We knew they weren't gonna fold, We knew
they were gonna keep competing, and then our guys did
a great job responding to the punch that Stony Brook
threw back at us. So proud of our group, excited
to be playing again tomorrow. Great team effort, obviously, balanced
(01:09):
scoring and then dug in on the defensive end, except
for the beginning of that second half with a little
brutal but again we bounced back from that.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
Yeh.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Stony Brooks started off hot.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
They were able to get to score closer seven of
seven to start the second half, but to end the
second half, I thought Niles Lane's job on CJ Luster
down the stretch was fantastic.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
What was your vantage point of Niles defensively?
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Yeah, I mean he's been our defensive stopper and our
go to guy on that end. He's guarded the best
player on the other team, you know, probably had thirty
two games in a row. So he gives us great energy.
He's always willing to do what the team needs of him,
and he is a heck of an individual defender, tremendous athlete. Obviously,
(01:54):
his lateral quickness is great and he's always up for
the challenge. So you know, we were worried about Snatti's physicality,
so we had Niles over there to start the game,
just because we started that smaller group today. But then
Niles was ready to make that adjustment and to get
on to Luster, who obviously was having a great game.
And yeah, he made some tough shots against the other guys.
(02:16):
The other guys did a pretty good job, and some
of those he was just still making the shots off
great defense. But yeah, Niles was tremendous and a big
key down to stretch defensively.
Speaker 4 (02:27):
Billy, I thought our substitution patterns were superb tonight this afternoon.
Excuse me, you got Houston Emory and early he was
really good. Then he made a couple of big plays late.
I thought the offensive defensive substitutions of Eric with making
coming in on defense really key to the game. He
had some big free throws too in the clutch.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Didn't he Yeah, for sure, not making You know, we
tell those guys they're not freshmen anymore. Right, this is
a game number thirty two. We've been telling them for
a while now. You're not a freshman. Don't don't even
don't make excuses like a freshman, and you got to
we're counting on you, so step up and they play.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
He was great, bringing making in again, a bigger.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Body there allowed us to slide Niles over to Luster,
and yeah, Houston was ready to play, and you know
he said great substitutions that credit to the guys for
being ready to come in no doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
So credit to those.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Guys for being ready to play, ready to compete and contribute.
And you know, some of those guys that didn't get intonight,
it might be their night tomorrow. I think everybody, and
you know they know this. We don't have to tell them,
but everybody, all hands on deck. Every game is going
to be different, and everybody's got to be ready to
contribute if we want to keep playing.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
And part of that defense for offense, offense for defense,
Emery came in and grabbed a rebound, was found and
then made some free throws, go up seventy five to
seventy at that point, who is the genius that put
Eric Timpco back into the starting lineup because the first
shot went through. He had scored five points, as you know,
in the final four games of this season, and he
(03:53):
goes back into the starting lineup, makes his first shot.
He had five points and I think before the first
media timeout of this one got hot.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Just talk about how your confidence in him never.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Waiver yep, for sure, And obviously that that's Martin and
his decision and him always you know, pumping our guys
full of confidence as we get closer to March. And
now that we're in March, so and and again credit
to Eric for being ready for that opportunity, right, because
he hasn't been playing as much, he hasn't been scoring
as much, and and we put him back in the
lineup and obviously the biggest game of the year now
(04:23):
that our season's on the line every day, and he
stepped up and and you know, shot the heck out
of the ball to start the game and competed on
both ends.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
And Billie, what I loved about our defense this afternoon.
I counted for maybe it was five possessions where it
was down to literally the last second, and I haven't
seen that in a while, So that was really good
to see communication, connectiveness, just really being gritty defensively. And
I know you have a lot to do with that,
so well done.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
Well we've been We've been preaching multiple efforts, right, and
maybe we haven't been great at it all season, but
I you know, I think now again like our lives
on the line, and there's a sense of urgency, and
that's what we've been preaching in multiple efforts and doing
it together on the defensive end, and those guys had
each other's backs. And then when you do that, you
force the offense into those late clock situations and at
(05:14):
the end of those shot clock possessions for sure.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
And then, coach, I want to let you go.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
I don't want to end an interview without at least
mentioning the effort of Houston. Emory he talked about naked,
but Houston stayed ready for the moment, and in a
big moment here in Washington, d C. He had a
span with a couple of block shots, a layup, a
big dunk. But I thought he gave fantastic minutes in
that first half.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Yeah, he gives us a presence in the lane, you know,
in that ball screen defense. And guy had a big
time block you know, down here in the second half.
And yeah, again, you know, one of those guys is
who've been ready and just you know, ready when his
number is called. And yeah, I'm really proud of him
for being ready tonight and contributing to the win.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Well, coach, twenty two hours from now, we'll be back
in the same spot best left tomorrow against.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
Campbell, I'll be here.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
Let's do it again, all right, big thanks, well done,
Billy our associate head coach of Bill Philip
