Speaker 1 (00:00):
And actually we've got Christian coming our way right now,
and so we're gonna hop right into the interview with
Coach Nunez and coach had the scout today, and boy
did he have a good scout today. Christian. A seventy
nine sixty two victory for the Hens. For I was
(00:20):
saying it as we went off the air after the victory.
For a team that cannot rebound, three players in double
figures rebounding and a plus nine in that category, for
a team that can't play any defense. They hold Campbell
to thirty seven percent after the first ten minutes of
the ballgame for the final thirty or so, a defensive
(00:42):
effort that holds Campbell. I thought it was the best
defensive effort of this season against Campbell. What are your thoughts?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Coach challenged all our guys the last two days before
we you know, before we took off the DC. He said, uh,
we've been struggling defensively as a team. Now is obviously
our best defender, but he tested, he made sure he
told those guys, hey, we need other guys to step
up defensively. He challenged all those guys, and you know,
we're starting to you know, rise up to the challenge.
(01:12):
I feel like this this team is hungry right now,
We're more connected, which is how to continue to you know,
continue to play harder.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
They looked like they were connected. They looked like they
were playing hard from the jump. And I want to
talk about the effort of Niles Lane. They are gonna
have to check these rims to see if they're they're
on straight after what he did to them offensively but
defensively to hold a first team All CAA selection. The
CAA is leading scorer in league play without a point
in the first half. He of course he's gonna make
some as the game goes on. But Dugan looked as
(01:41):
checked out as I've seen because Niles Lane was on
him from the very start. To talk us through that
decision to switch less and keep Niles on him, and
then the john that Niles did.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah, like I said earlier, Niles, you know, coastman challenging everyone.
We all know Niles is our best defender. When he's
dialed in. I think he's the best defender in the league,
not the country. When he's dialed in, he's probably the
best defunder in the country. And we just continue to
challenge him like I've been in his ear, like, hey, no,
you don't want to go home. This is your last year.
You do not want to go home early. Step up
(02:11):
to the challenge, be a senior and lead us defensively.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Christian, First of all, congratulations, great scout. I thought every
time that they made a run at us in the
second half, especially inside ten minutes, we had a response,
and I thought that was the absolute key to the game.
We would respond either offensively or make a big defensive play.
Tell us about that.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
I think Coach did a great job of, you know,
getting us together offensively. They made a run, Coach made
sure we kind of slowed down, ran some good sets,
got some great looks. We were able to make those
great looks. So just being able to control the game
like coach did, I think kind of helped us out
a lot.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
I thought one of the other big reasons we won
we were out rebounded severely up in New York. Here
we come in and looked like we were determined to
make sure we ran down those mid range misses. How
about Eric timpco tip in or two. He was terrific,
But I thought that was really the key to the
game to us beside the individual defense as we played,
we did a great job in the mid range, forcing
(03:08):
it into a lot of bad shots.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yeah, rebounding has been an achilles hill. We've been struggling.
Oh yeah, the rebound. Well, we keep preaching we need
all five guys. We're not the biggest team out there.
We need all five guys in rebound and Eric Erk's
been doing that for the most part. Oh yeah, I
know he's been struggling offensively last couple of games. But
you know he also another guy to college Gerrida and early,
so he's dialed in. I like his focus right now.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
He had twelve rebounds. His twelfth was when he followed
a miss and found a spot in the corner and
put a dagger in it. Campbell led do a timeout
and of course a celebration is the hens. We're feeling
good about the ballgame. We've talked about balance it as
all five starters got in double figures in the first game.
How about Pasha is a unique Blox score today? He almost,
as Bill said, it, almost got double double the hard
(03:53):
way without points, ten rebounds, nine assists. He was playing
so well finding his teammates. You know, that's ay to
the offensive success. And you know what, when he was
struggling a bit offensively, Trent came in and spelled him
in game some good minutes as well.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
Yeah, on trust behalf, it's next man up man. I
think Trent to play some big minutes for us when
you know, when we have Pasha out the game. But
Pasha just getting better. Pasha's not a freshman anymore. He's
a sophomore. He's a sophomore. He's growing, he's learning the game,
and he's getting better each and every day. So just
you got to continue to taligen him, continue to coach him,
you know, just watch his growth.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
All right, Well, what happens now? Because you are as
ed Lafferge has sent me a great sid for us
to communications director. The lowest seed that has ever reached
the quarterfinal round in the CIA Tournament. Very impressive stuff there.
But I know you're not happy, and please just to
make it to Sunday. It's a quick turnaround. You'll be
the only team playing on Sunday that has already had
(04:49):
two games. So what does the next twenty four hours
look for you? Guys?
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Just off our feet, you know, watching a ton of
film away to Mary, watching our game against them, just
you know, just they ain't locked in staying focused. I
know it sounds cliche, but the job's not done. We
know we came here for a reason, so we just
got to continue to stay locked in focus and on to.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
The next one. Christian, a great scout today and uh,
your first trip with us down to DC. We're lucky
to have you.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Thanks Christian, great job, Get some rests and we will
see tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
That's our assistant coach, Christian Nuniez giving us some of
his time. We always appreciate the coaches stopping by. Martin
anglesby with press conference duties here in Washington, and so
it's great to talk with the guy that had the
game plan for the Hens, and we love the game
plan coming in from the start. Let's frustrate Kobe Dugan
with Niles Lane on him.
