Speaker 1 (00:00):
And al, let's talk to the man that drew it up.
An amazing game plan on the day he had this scout,
JJ Butler is with us and coach, what an amazing
execution of a game plan. I know you drew up
to make eighteen threes in the game. That helps, But
let's start with defense. You hold William and Mary to
twenty eight percent from the field in the second half.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
How'd you do it?

Speaker 3 (00:23):
Coach did a great job at halftime just making sure
the message was clear. We know William Mary is a
fast paced team. They want to get up and down
and shoot a lot of threes, which we also played
fast as well. We just thought our advantage was to
slow the game down and make them a half court
team offensively, and it worked out for us on both ends.
We were able to score it pretty well in the
half court and slowing it down and being methodical, but

(00:44):
I think it allowed us to kind of keep bodies
in front of the bodies defensively and make sure they
were taking tough ones rather than clean ones.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
In transition, how did you settle offensively? There were seven
turnovers in the first about nine minutes of the basketball game.
Seven the rest of the way, including won very late,
so we called six turnovers the whole rest of the game.
He had some trouble with pressure early on. How did
you get this group settled and stop turning over the basketball?

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Yeah, I mean, How's off and William Mary they have
a special style of basketball. I di do a really
good job of making it tough on their opponents. But
this is the second time we've seen them. We came
out with the victory the first time, but we had
a blip on the radar with turnovers in the first game.
So that was a big emphasis for us watching film
and walk through this morning in the hotel, just being
methodical on how we were going to attack their pressure.

(01:29):
How's off the Danie o'connery is a big part of
just putting together the game plan for handling pressure and
make sure we can get the ball in and get
it over the timeline before ten seconds. So hat's off
to our guys are actually keeping the game plan. But
I don't know. I think it's something that we came
in really prepared for.

Speaker 4 (01:45):
Jj I called this a program win. I really believe
it was for everybody involved, from the managers all the
way up, Paul Lowry and everybody to kind of find
a way to get this team back and connect it.
I want to know what you guys did in the
last week, because we really have changed our not our
style of play, but just playing with extreme confidence coming
in here after a tough end of this season, albeit

(02:05):
of course, but we look like a completely different team,
much more confident. We never lost belief in ourselves. A
lot of it has to do with you guys, but
also the kids really kind of embracing that message.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Yeah, for sure. I mean, hats off the coachingles. He
did a great job of just making sure guys stayed
ten toes down for our group and continue to believe
that we had an opportunity something he said multiple times.
As he thought and we thought as a group, we
were the most dangerous group coming into this tournament. We're
super efficient, and we were explosive offensively. I think we
were struggling defensively during that stretch, and we definitely figured

(02:36):
out ways to lose games. I can tell you that.
But and then hats off to our group. They took
the message and ran with it. They believed, they believe
in one another. We got a great group of guys,
great teammates, to one another and support it for one another.
So I think it just was a matter of fact
of getting that one win that was going to catapult
us and give us some momentum. And that's kind of
what you guys have seen the last three days.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
Tell me a little bit about your bench.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
There were two moments I wrote down on it let's
see how let's see what happens now moments, and that
was Nile's lane picking up his second fall at ten
forty in the first half, and then Eric Timco picks
up his four at sixteen twenty three. That's a lot
of basketball left to be with down Eric Tempco, the
way that he had been playing, you obviously extended your lead.
After both of those moments, your bench came in and
gave really good minutes.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Yeah, for sure. I mean Trent Middleton was huge for
us having two point guards on the floor handle that
type of pressure. He was phenomenal. We kind of expressed
how important he was going to be to him before
the game, and I think he just rose to the
occasion and he was huge for us handling the pressure,
you know what, to get easy scores. And then, like
we talked about a halftime, being able to slow it
down and slot he's going to slow the game down
when you have two point guards, and then shout out

(03:39):
to Torontollen. He hadn't played in the first two games,
really experienced guy, got just super gritty and he came
in and got a bucket and helped to slow us
down and kept the ball in front. I don't know,
just that goes back to our message over the last week,
just having a good, great group of guys that believe
in one another, and those two guys, when the opportunity arose,
they stepped up. And then making Emory's kind of been
a guy for us the bench all season, so I

(04:01):
think he just continued to help us rebound, keep the
ball in front.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Two big threes as well, back to back for making Emeric.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
Yes, sir well, I thought that was one of the
keys going with our smaller unit that not only helped
against the press, it also helped us defend their perimeter guys.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
I thought we did a great job.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
Of taking away any clean looks other than one in
the second half for Gabe Dorsey, who's a terrific long shooter,
and at one point I said, the only way they're
gonna get back in the game is shooting the threes,
and we did a great job of pushing out on them,
but still Trent Middleton had a couple of blocks around
the rim, and in the first half we actually avoided
four layups, two by Trent Middleton and two by Isaiah
Pasha on breakouts for them, where that game could have

(04:40):
gotten like an accordion early on.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Yeah, not for sure. I think they have a unique
style will even marry where they're going to try to
tack you with a ton of back cuts, and they
got a ton of action, three man actions, and our
ability to switch those all with perimeter guys was an
emphasis for us. And then we had a big responsibility
for those smaller units to be able to go to post.
I mean they try to post us multiple times. Lowe

(05:03):
is a really physical guard and then the ender and
both we are both guys that can get it done
in the post. And I thought Posh, Isaiah, cav everybody
that was forced to switch on to them did a
really good job and making it tough for them to catch.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
Well, you guys had an amazing game plan, amazing execution
of the game plan, but maybe one thing that you
can't necessarily coach is eight of ten from three from
John Camden, thirty six points in this ball game. At
one point it felt like he was willing this team,
but back he went down by seven, and then after
that he had a huge couple of huge shots a
thirteen to one run.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Never looked back. But what a game from John Camden.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
Yeah. I mean, if this was your first time watching us,
you're pretty impressed and you're blown away and you're wondering,
I wonder if that kid plays like that all the time.
To the loyal Blue Hen fans, we all know we've
seen it before. I mean, this isn't his first thirty
point game. This isn't his first big thirty point game
on a big stage. I don't know. Big time players
make big time plays, and today was a game for
John Campden.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Well, there's gonna be a national crowd that we'll finally
get to see.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
Came.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
They can't keep us off TV if you're bing it
to the semifinal round and Delaware will do just that.
Congratulations one last thing, JJ, I know, it is such
an amazing feeling to win a game like this and
to come off the court with your team and your
staff and your players and even better feeling to be
able to come into the crowd and see your daughter
and your wife.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
That's got to be great to have their support here.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
Yeah, awesome. They made the trip. Unfortunately they got to
go home tonight, but they'll be able to watch she'll
be able to watch that on TV if mom lets
her stay up. But not an awesome feeling.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
You encourage her to let her stay up one or
maybe I try my best.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
But yeah, it was awesome having them here to these
three days. And I don't know. My wife's awesome. It's
tough to be a wife of a basketball coach, but
she sticks with me. She believes in me. She's super supportive.
So having her a harper here, we're great.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Fantastic, JJ, congratulations, will let you go.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
Congratulations and we'll talk tomorrow as Delaware get set for
the CAAA semi final round.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
That's JJ Butler.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
He had to scout today for the game against William
and Mary.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
Congratulations to him.
