Speaker 1 (00:00):
And were welcome you back here into the anchor Buick
GMC drive fall. What a run by the Delaware Blue
Hens and falls just shy seventy six seventy two the
final in this one. We're now talk with our head
coach Martin Englesby, and I said it while you weren't here,
but thank you for coming out. It's not a scene
that I know, it's fun to watch in front of
us as there's a celebration for UNCW. We're gonna talk
(00:21):
about the game, but what a magical run it has been.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
For the University of Delaware Blue Hens.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
You caught the attention of the nation and a lot
of great things, a lot of things to be proud of,
not only leading up to this game, but during this
game and throughout. But I just want to lead and
open you up to a conversation about what you've seen
from your program.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Over the last five days.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Yeah, I mean an unbelievable run down in DC. You know,
a group that really came together at the right time.
They were playing their best basketball, really believed in what
we were doing every day, and you know, just proud
of how they represented the University of Delaware and and
our basketball program, the University of the Lums, everybody you
know on our campus so disappointed this things in the moment,
(01:02):
but we'll take some time to step back and keep
it in perspective and want a magical run and you know,
look forward to really, you know, kind of celebrating this
with our guys and just thankful for everything that they
did for us. You know, you're not in these positions often.
You know, sometimes the other team just plays a little better.
And you know, it was a heck of a second half.
We got down, we battled back, we took the lead,
(01:23):
and they just made a couple more shots than us
down the stretch to be able to get it done.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Well, let's talk about this game a little bit as
the team, you know what got delaware here was at
three point shooting at that of offense, and the firepower
wasn't there to start. Three of the first sixteen went
through it from the field and only two of the
first ten threes. You guys were down by fifteen points,
and at that point in the game, it could have
there was a point of the game where it could
have ballooned, you guys, dug deep and brought it back
(01:49):
down to.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Three before it was eight o'clock.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
We'll just talk about that part of the game where
you guys really dug your hills and fought back.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Yeah, I mean I thought we would eventually get into
a little bit of a flow on the defensive end.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
We just kept preaching guarding on the defensive end.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
You know, we did a fabulous job on the two
big kids o bi Oha and McGriff I think they
made some timely shots to be able to extend the lead,
but then we were able to get some stops and
get out. In transition, we got some layups. I think
Nile got a bucket, Pos got a bucket. We made
a three, and then you're just kind of creeping back
into it. You know, you felt like, all right down
eight at half, you're right there. We got off to
a great start in the second half. But again, stay confident,
(02:24):
keep believing. You know, the second half we rode those
guys a lot of minutes, but you know, we made it.
I knew we would make a run at some point
to put some pressure on them.
Speaker 5 (02:33):
Martin. I thought you had a great strategy, knowing how
you and CW was going to defend, especially when Obioha
was on the floor. Yeah, and we took advantage of that.
That was just a great job by you orchestrating that
every time Obioha made a switch on any of our guys,
we were attacking the lane, whether we scored, got fouled,
or dropped it off to a cutter from the weak side.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
Really well done.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Yeah, I mean they're really good defensively. You know, they
switched one through four. Sometimes they twitched one through five.
You know, I didn't think our space thing in the
first maybe ten minutes was great, but we kind of
directed some things and then Niles and Toos were able
to get downhill and create some opportunities and you.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
Know, again we we got to do a good flow.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
The other thing too, is we didn't do a great
job like they got twenty nine free throws twenty four
they made twenty four. You know, we were kind of
guarding the first shot pretty well. We needed to do
a better job of playing without foulon we did that.
We might have been aybay to get it done, but again,
you know, we're Feels group. They went for it, and
you know it was two point game with under a
minute to go, and Mowbe makes a tough two point
shot right where we wanted to be just didn't needed
(03:32):
him to miss that one and rebound and see if
we get a bucket to tie or score.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
We knew knew he was their closer. He had to
clutch performances. So I do want to talk about the
endgame of this basketball game. We talked in the pregame
show about shooting turnovers and maybe there's a couple of
possessions where we're maybe just didn't get the right shot.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
Yeah, I think we were, you know, maybe down four
or five, and he had one time out, cav took
one that was a little quick. I think Niles had
a floater in the lane. They could have cut it
to two. It's a good play, you know, trying to
get them maybe a little bit of you know, not
a set play, but kind of stir them up a
little bit, and we just didn't convert those. I think
maybe Cavs was a little quick, but we had some opportunities,
(04:09):
you know. I think before that Eric had a three
that could have maybe given us the lead by one,
but just needed to be a little better down the
stretch in our execution.
Speaker 5 (04:17):
Martin the development of Isaiah Pasha has been phenomenal and
I'm going to credit you in the staff for that.
He's a completely different player today than he was early
in the season, midseason, and even at the end of
the season. A great job with him at times. I
think he was the best player on the floor tonight.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
Yeah, I mean, he just got better and better and
more confident. I mean, you know, we're trying to run
some players. I'm getting mad at him, but he had
twenty one points, a rebound, seven assists. I mean, I
can't ask him to do anymore. And he's playing a
ton of minutes, and you know, he wants the ball
in his hands. He wants to kind of be the facilitator,
decision maker. He's trying to balance scoring and getting his
teammate shots. But just you know, a fabulous freshman year
(04:56):
for him, Rookie of the Year. I just think he's
got such a bright future, hopefully in our prom as
we move forward. But really really talented guy that just
you know has got to continue to work to get better.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
But a great, great freshman year by him.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
And you definitely feel, and we mentioned that, you feel
like there's a jectory of a Tyler Tehade if he
stays here.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
The Rookie of the year. Player of the Year.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
Would be the next two or the next year for
him to stay at Delaware. I want to just talk
we're generally outside of this game over the last really day,
when when you climbed in and had the opportunity to
win five and five, a lot of national attention, a
lot of positivity towards this program.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
What can that do for the Delaware basketball program?
Speaker 3 (05:36):
Yeah, I mean, I think it's great. It's great for
our program, it's great for our university. You want to
be playing your best basketball at the end of the year,
and you know, as we go into you want to
say the offseason. Now there's no such thing as an
offseason anymore, but we'll give our guys some time, a
couple of days and get to you know, visit with
them a little bit, talk about the year, talk about
what's next, and then you know, once this transfer portal opens,
(05:56):
I think March twenty fourth, we're going to have to
attack that head on. We are see going into a
better basketball conference, national exposure. You know, we got to
continue to study the conference and see who's coming back,
see what we need to add, and kind of attack
that to really try to build our roster but you know,
we're excited to go to Conference Usay, you know, thankful
for the CAA and everything that they've done for us
(06:17):
and me in my nine years here in the program.
Their first class people. But you know, we'll take some
time to get home and then we got to attack
this offseason with bigger and get after it.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
How does maybe roster building or what is the difference
perhaps as you get to Conference USA the type of
player that.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
You need to have on your roster.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Yeah, I mean, you know, our staff has kind of
taken a couple of teams and really dove into them
as far as what their roster looks like, where they
have recruited, where they're getting guys, where their transfers are
coming in. We'll spend some time over the next couple
of weeks probably just watching them to see what we need,
what we lack. You know, again, I think is important
for us to know how many scholarships we have. We
have two young freshmen that are coming in where they're
really excited about. We obviously want to retain some guys.
(06:58):
Really important from our retention stamp. Teams that win in
college basketball retain talent, and it's really important for us
to be able to do that with a core group
of guys that we have and then build our roster
from there. So again, the next couple of weeks are
pretty big, pretty busy, busy for us.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
I know better than to ask you on these postame
interviews at the end of the season about guys coming
back and maybe what next year could be because you're
just never know, and we've talked about how hard you've
been hit with talented players leaving the program. So walk
us through, I guess and our listeners because they're very
interested obviously on what is the plan in terms of
(07:35):
when you'll know and even beyond that, when you'll know
how much money you have to spend, because that's what
it's all about in building this rule.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
Yeah, I think that's a work in progress. I mean,
those conversations are had on campus and then you know
from our collective we have to hopefully have some resources
to be able to retain these guys, and I think
that's a fluid situation.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
We're working hard.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
I know our administration is working hard. Just kind of
see what those numbers look like for us and what
we're able to do. Because with this house settlement coming in,
you're gonna be able to pay players and through the
school and through a collective, and that's very important for
us as we head into a new conference with the
resources that some of those teams have. So I don't
have a target date. I'd love to know sooner than later.
You know, as we get back to campus, you know
(08:15):
we're gonna have those conversations because we have to be
very aggressive, and there's some guys that we got to
be very aggressive with to try to retain and keep well.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
From a development standpoint, they will have a no better
coach than you.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
You were masterful this weekend with the head and.
Speaker 5 (08:31):
That's my selling point. I'd be selling you and the
staff and the community. There is nobody out there that's
recruiting better players and developing than you. And we've had
some tough fuck with guys leaving for bigger money and
bigger leagues and so on and so forth. But as
a bellow coach at the high school level, when I
watch you go about your business day in and day out,
as I've been able to do for a long time,
(08:53):
there isn't anybody out there that has watched this program
that wouldn't want their son to come and play for.
Speaker 3 (08:58):
You if weord that unmost send all the recruise, all
these transfers that we're trying to get into our program,
but you haven't called me. Yeah, yeah, I will definitely
do that. So but again, I thank you guys. I mean,
you're the best, great supporters. The hell of a run
for our team. I'm glad we're all a part of it.
Just obviously disappointed for our group, but you know, really
proud of what this group was able to accomplish over
the last five days. And you know, hopefully we can
(09:20):
give us this can give us a big shout in
the arm as we headed in the off season then
head to a new conference.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
It's been an absolute blast down here in d C.
And it'll bring momentum to this program for sure. Coach,
you are a class act all the time. There's no
one better to work with. And for you to come
out here and talk with us after the championship round,
it means a lot to our our us and the
listeners appreciate it as well as back home tuning in.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
It'll be better than you, Martin, Thanks so much.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
Thanks guys, all.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
Right, that's our head coach, Martin Ingles be a class act.
To coming out as always tamping with us after a
seventy six seventy two loss, and to be out here.
You probably heard the background music they're playing we are
the champions. I mean for us to give the option
and say, you know what, this is a tough position
to be in and
