Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back into Matthews Arena again, Steph. For CAAA play
to start Delaware taken on Northeastern. Before we get the
tip off, we'll talk with our head coach, Martin Ingles
be coach, Happy New Year to you. And with that,
I guess I'll get started with the obligatory New Year
question of but new Year's resolutions, right, so everyone has
their New Year resolution, if you were to have one

(00:20):
for your team, what might be heading into CIA play?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Well, happy New Year, you know. I think for us
to be able to get off the great starting conference
play and be a much more connected and together team
on the defensive end. I think that's an area where
this group's got to be able to get better. I
told them at the hotel last night. We're top three
in offensive efficiency in the league, but bottom three and
defensive efficiency. So our ability to be tougher and really
maybe carry over what we did against Saint John's the physicality,

(00:45):
the toughness, to competitiveness and just take more pride in
being better and connecting on the defensive end.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
I go to talk to you about defense with first,
I want to get into kind of the bodies you
have available tonight. It seems like only eight scholarship players
might be available today. How does that effect what you
guys do and the game plan with all those guys.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Out, Yeah, I mean we're a little limited. Tron did
not make the trip with us. He's dealing with the flu.
When was we got off here. Cavin Riley got hit
with it as well, so he's back at the hotel resting.
Kobe Jerome won't be available either because he's got hit
with the flu. So I think we got nine guys
that'll be available to play tonight, So you know, everybody's
got to be ready to go. Got an opportunity to
compete a tough environment, great team, but we are a

(01:26):
little limited with our personnel this evening.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
Because you're being limited in personnel and you talked about defense.
I know we talked a little bit at the end
of the Saint John's games of maybe going looking at
least into going zone a little bit more possibly that,
and then also want to ask you about just the
importance of playing defense without fouling tonight because of limited rest.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Yeah, I mean it's a little bit like the Yale
game when we were down a couple of bodies due
to suspension. But no, we have to play zone. I
think we're not a group that maybe can sustain forty
minutes of Manda man and our key guys are gonna
have to play heavy minutes, so being able to just
hopefully don't get in foul trouble, but if they do,
to be able to give some teams some different looks
and maybe we got to play a little slower, you know,
to be able to get those guys make sure they

(02:04):
have their energy at the end of the game. But
you know this group is conditioned, they're ready to go.
You know, we talked about eighteen one to no nights,
so this is the first one tonight, But definitely want
to get off to a great start and play well.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
You know how that that Yelle game turned out all
right with limited players. Just continuing on with the defensive
side of things, Northeastern struggled with turnovers last game, twenty
two turnovers. What gets them maybe in some trouble that
you could apply to what you guys want to do defensive.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Yeah, I think just being like really good position defenders.
I mean they have veteran guards that have played together.
They're very interior, very good interior passing team. They cut
well off the ball. But if we can be disciplined
and you know, get some deflection, maybe at leaves some
opportunities for us to get out and transition. And they
got off the great start the other night against Northeast Northwestern,
and then Northwestern kind of dug in and put their

(02:52):
heels in the ground. We were able to get some
stops and that it led them into get some opportunities
in transition and shooting the ball in a half court.
So we got to be really locked in our personnel awareness,
really good in our switching and be able to limit
them to one shot obviously on the defensive end.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
And we're talking with our head coach Martin Angles being
getting ready for Della Ware to take on Northeastern. Let's
talk a little bit about this Huskies team coming in
with a winning record. Everybody a clean slate as you
get into CAAA play, but had a winning non conference
to slate them. Defensively, they playman the man La Pratt
transfer from Elon's gonna kind of pressure the ball and
pressure the point guard a full court or what do
they do defensively that they make things difficult for their posting.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Yeah, I mean we're familiar with Pratt obviously playing against
him in the CIA. You know he's going to get
up three quarter court and make Isaiah work and Trent
work and whoever's handling the basketball. They really try to
ice the wing ball screens. They don't switch a whole lot,
so they try to keep bodies on bodies in their matchups.
So our ability to get paint touches, driving kick, be
able to play out of a post a little bit.
I do think transition offense can be a weapon for

(03:50):
us if we get some stops to get out in
transition with our ability to shoot the basketball, you know,
and continue to trust our offering, sharing the basketball, making
the extra pass, giving up a good one to get
a great one against a team that's you know, pretty
discipline defensively, what.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Do you tell your team about awareness of Colin Metcalf
that they're five, that's one of the top defensive shot
blockers in the country.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Yeah, I mean, we don't want to not go in there,
but we do want to try to attack the paint
and just beware aware of him as we get downhill.
This is a team that will collapse really hard on penetration,
and especially we get deeper into the paint, be able
to play off two feet under control, and if we
got an angle, try to go score. If not, let's
spray it out to those shooters spotting up. So you know,
we don't want to We want to get him in

(04:30):
bossaries and try to stir him up with some good
movement to give us some avenues to get downhill. And
then as we go a little smaller, you know, maybe
that gives some opportunities for us to be able to
get in the paint and get it back to John
Cannon for some looks.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
And in terms of a player to watch for, shot
Kings been playing really well for this basketball team. He
scored twenty points in the game four times this season.
He's kind of the team leader, gets it going. What
what would you tell your team about a guy like that?

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Yeah, I mean he's you know, he's played a lot
of minutes in his career here in Northeast. In Northeastern,
I think he's gotten better and better each year. He's
got good size, he's a great cutter off the basketball.
You know, he and Pratt and Troutman and was really
play well off of each other and they share the
ball well. Got to have an awareness of him in
transition the three point line. Niles is going to start
on him, but a lot of our perimeter guy is
going to be able to guard him. And you know,

(05:14):
at the end of the clock, it's going to be King,
It's going to be Pratt trying to look the score.
So we've got to do a really good job keeping
them out of the paint and making them work for
their buckets.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
A lot of the names you have mentioned have been
on Northeastern for a couple of years. You have a
guy who's in his nineteenth season at Northeastern and Bill Cohen.
Not a whole lot of the transfer portal of course
to La Pratt out of Elon, but guys have been
able to stay here for quite some time. It's an
older building, it's a coach that's leads the CIA in
all the time. Has more of like an old school
feel when you come off the Northeastern, doesn't it.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
Ian It's great to be able to get in the city.
I mean, I have unbelieved respect for Bill and what
he's done with this program. Nineteen years, the all time
winning is coach in the CIA, and he's going to
have his team very prepared for us. You know, they've
been dinged a little bit with the transfer portal with
some good players, but they had this group, core group,
but perimeter guys that have played a lot of minutes.
They took some punches the last couple of years in

(06:03):
CAA play, but they've gotten better and better and they
have really good chemistry. So it's gonna be a hack
of a challenge for our group, and I know we're
ready to roll.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
And then lastly, coach, what's the message to your team
as you get into a new season. CAAA play starts tonight?

Speaker 2 (06:16):
Yeah, it just can't keep believing in who we are
and what we've done. And you know, maybe we had
a little bit of an up and down non conference season,
but clean slate, we're zero and zero. This is what
it's all about. Go out there and have fun, keep
believing each other, trust the preparation and trust the plan
that we put in place, and we make a mistake
onto the next play and just got to try to
stay as connected as we can.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
All right, Coach, good luck tonight.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
All right, thanks Scott.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
All right, that's our head coach, Martin Nigoles. We will
take a time out, we come back. Tip off on
