Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back into Washington, d C. Getting ready for the
opening round of the CAAA Tournament. One last CAAA tournament
for the University of Delaware forore moving on a Conference USA,
and it all starts today at two o'clock. We are
getting closer to the tip. I'm Scott Klatskin. We're now
joined by our head coach, Martin Inglesby. And you gotta
love March. It doesn't matter what happened in the regular season.
(00:20):
You get to March, you get to tournament time, and
you have all the faith in the world that your
team could be the team that ends with a trophy
in their hand. Everybody coming down here has that same faith.
Tell me about some of that messaging to your team
during the week and then how practice went getting ready
for a Friday tip.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Yeah, I mean that's why they call it marsh Madness, Right,
anything can happen. You know, we have a do have
a group that's super confident. We know we don't have
maybe the wins that we'd hope for in the regular season,
but I thought we had a really really good week
of practice, two physical days on Thursday or sorry, Tuesday
and Wednesday. But then like we're zero and zero. You
(00:56):
ripped up the stats. We're undefeated. Trying to show our
guys some clips of us doing some really really good
things this year, and how fragile in a fine line
it is for us to be A couple plays here,
a couple stops there. You know, we're in a lot
different positions. So got to put that in a rearview
mirror and focus on what we needed to do this week.
And we had a loose workouts and gonna come down
(01:16):
here and let it rip.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Yesterday probably after practice. I would assume some awards came
out in the CIA. It's one that we were anticipating
for many weeks now, but Rookie of the Year award
went to Isaiah Pasha. It is now the fourth time
in your nine seasons at the University of Delaware that
you have had a Rookie of the Year Award winner.
Really impressive stuff to put into context. There's been forty
(01:38):
two years of the award forty two and only four
other schools schools programs have had four winners. So you
know how to bring them in here, you know how
to recruit them. You're bringing in the talent. Congratulations on that.
How did Isaiah feel when the award was Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
I mean we shared it with the team after practice yesterday.
I told him to keep it confidential till two o'clock.
We were on the bus when it got released. But
you know, really really proud of him. He earned it,
he deserved it. He had a phenomenal freshman year for us,
you know, when both ends of the floor distributed and scoring.
You know, I think he grew as a defensive player.
That is a sales pitch we gave to him when
he came into the league about you know, you're gonna
(02:12):
have an opportunity. We believe you could be the rookie
of the Year in the league. And sure did he
deliver for us. And you know, we've had some great
ones over the years. And Ryan Daily, Ryan Allen, Jay,
you're Davis. Isaiah is another guy that you know, hopefully
can kind of lead us some victories down here and
see if we can extend our stay down here in DC.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
Things went well the last time you had Rookie of
the Year in the CIA. Another award winner was John
Camden's second team All C A A. And you're gonna
need him to play like a first team All CIA selection,
which he did for a lot of part of the
season to advance, to continue to advance in the CIA Tournament.
What do you need from from John as the leader,
as your all c A guy down here, D.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
Yeah, I mean, continue to stay confident, attack, pick and
choose the spots on the offensive end when he can,
you know, be aggressive and score it. Obviously, we're at
our best. He's at his best when he's making shot,
and I think our ability to get some stops and
get out in transition to be able to give him
some opportunities and then maybe grind some possessions in the
half court to get him some looks. So I want
(03:09):
him to continue to do what he's doing on the
offensive end. I think he grew as a kind of
more efficient offensive player as the season went on, and
just knowing when to attack, when to distribute. You know,
he's really that point playmaking forward for us because he's
gonna have the ball in his hands a lot and
just trying to balance out to help our team win.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
He's averaged about twenty five points per game the last
week of the season against really tough opponents. So we'll
look for him to keep it up down here in DC.
Let's talk about your opponent today, Sony Brook. They come
in they can almost won their way into this game
as they won their final two games of the season,
so they should have some confidence coming in.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
CJ.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Luster is their leader. What does he bringing the team?
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Yeah, I mean he's an at least score it, really
shoots the basketball. They run a lot of stuff for him.
We're going to have to have a big time awareness
of him from all three levels. Sorry, if we're in man,
we're in his zone him put them ball on the
floor again into the basket, but just a shot maker
for them, and I think with the kid Octave out,
he's just going to continue to hunt it even more so.
Cavil start on him. I'm sure Nile's a guard and
we've got to be really good with our routes and
(04:05):
discipline in our ball sterring coverages again him against him
and make other guys beat us.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
And you have some bigs. Ben White, he's familiar to
the CAAA tournament. He started here at Williams, started at
william and Mary played it in the tournament. Transferred to
now a member of stony Brook. But they will post
up their bigs and including a strong guard forward in Snowdy,
So how do you defend those matchups on the interior?
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Yeah, I mean, I'll throw it into White a little bit.
You know, we're gonna play one on one to start.
We got to do a really good job of defensive rebounding.
Snowdy has played fabulous the last couple of weeks, especially
with Octave out, just really coming into his own on
the offensive end, he's shooting at it, he's rebounding it,
he's driving it. We're gonna put Niles on him to start,
and we got to really try to make him work
and limit his opportunities. And then the freshman guard, I mean,
(04:47):
he was probably second in the league as far as
votes for Rookie of the Year. He's gotten better and
better each week. He's a tough, physical guard, can make shots,
really does a good job distributing. So we got to
really do a good job keeping on lane as well.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
We saw last year what some momentum can do. Stonybrook
was able to make a run to the championship. Game
went overtime almost so it took the league title after
being in an underdog in that championship round against Charleston.
Within the construct of a game, though, how can you
ride some ups and downs and stay even keeled throughout
it in a win or go home situation?
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Yeah? And I think our group's really excited to play.
I mean, you get down here, you feel the vibe
of the city, you're on the core, you're in tournment,
tournament setting. I think these guys have watched like a
lot of college basketball over the year, and you know,
can you get hot and get on a run in March?
And I've always said, you know, it's amazing what one
win can do for the confidence of a team. A
couple of years ago, when we beat Drexel, I thought
we felt like we were as good as anybody and
it was going to go win it. So can we
(05:40):
kind of ride that momentum but also stay focused and
poised in a forty minute game? Right? I think those
media timeouts are really important. Our energy, our positivity, great
attitude from the bench. I got to do a good
job staying poised and positive with our guys and continue
to coach and you know, stay true to who we are.
You know, we're not trying to overcorrect anything or reinvent
the wheel, but tweak a couple things and hopefully we
(06:02):
can get off to a good start, all right.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
For you to get that win, finish the sentence. For
us to move on and play tomorrow, we will need
to do.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
What be very, very disciplined and tough on the defensive end.
You know, that's what we did a couple of years ago.
I think we gotta be better on the defensive end
if we're gonna find a way to survive. In advance.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
All right, coach, we look forward to it. I will
not be talking to you after wins, because you've got
some press conferences to do. I'll talk to coach Phillips,
So I hope I don't talk. I hope I don't
see after the game.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
For the first time, that sounds like a deal man.
I appreciate.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Best of luck. That's our head, coach, Martin Engles. We
will take a time out, we come back and stip off.
Let's get this thing started in Washington, d C. It's
a CAA tournament. Come up next Urning for seven w
