Speaker 1 (00:00):
On a Monday night from Washington, DC, we get closer
to tip off. Delaware taken on Townsend for the third
time this season, this time in the CAAA semi final
Round'm Scott clasking with our head coach Martin Anglesby. It
has been a blast for Blue Heads fans, certainly for
me calling the action, and everyone involved in the Delaware
basketball over these last three days. So I got to
ask you, are you having some fun? How are you
(00:21):
enjoying this trip?
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Yeah? I love winning, so obviously for our team to
see their excitement, the belief. We're a little exhausted last
night after three wins and three days, but you're kind
of rolling on adrenaline. We got some good momentum playing bass,
playing some really good basketball at the right time, and
we had a couple extra hours of rest today, so
hopefully can help us get going and playing one tonight.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
That's good. No more afternoon games. You get to the
night game. That's something you know. You said, I know
to those around you, but I believe to even the public.
In one of the media events before the season even started,
when the schedule came out and no TV games, and
one of the things you said was, well, they have
to put us on TV if we make it to
the semifinal round, almost as if you know, a goal
for the season. It looked bleak at times, but for
(01:02):
you guys to be playing your best basketball of the
season at the right time, sometimes it's just all about timing.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
It is, and you know, riding this momentum and a
little prophetic I guess to start the year. And you know,
it's unfortunate for our players and student athletes. He we're
a full member of this league and we we get
to compete for a championship. She should have an opportunity
to be able to be on national TV to showcase,
you know, our program, our university, our players. But that
was a decision the CIA aide. But you know, yeah,
this season maybe hasn't gone as well as we would
(01:29):
have liked. But we came down here. We had a
great week of practice, really focused, and again I've said,
it's amazing what one win can do for the confidence
of a team. I'm going to continue to ride that.
We got three and we're trying to go for a fourth.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
One tonight, all right, let's talk about how we're going
to get that fourth win today against Townson Townson obviously
a physical team. Yesterday you made eighteen threes, and I
know that was part of the game plan, go make
eighteen threes, set a tie a school record. But you know,
how important is it today against Towson to get some
easy baskets, to get something at the rim? And how
are you able to do that today?
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Yeah? I mean they're a very good defensive team, very
very physical in the half court. I do think we
got to be opportunistic in transition. We got to rebound
the basketball. The two games we lost to them, we
gave up I think twenty eight offensive rebounds. This is
a possession by possession game. So if we can do
a better job rebound in the basketball, taking care of
the basketball, and you know, get some shots on the rim,
I think we got some opportunities to score the basketball.
(02:20):
So it can't just be you know, we do want
to try to control tempo and execute in the half court,
but if we have some defensive rebounds where we can
get out and maybe get some easy opportunities to be
able to put some pressure on them. And this is
gonna be a true road game for us. They're gonna
have a great crowd. They had a great crowd yesterday.
Hopefully we can just keep hanging around and get them
tight at the end and make it a one possession game.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Well, you make a good point. Towson had a good
crowd yesterday. I do think though, the tire this game
is the later it gets. There's going to be two
other teams fans who are going to come into the
building for that next game down south that are be
rooting for the lower seeded teams. Just how it works
that they'll be rooting for Delaware. How do you manage
your timeouts? We talked about the yesterday. I thought you
did a great job of managing timeouts around the media
(03:00):
timeouts to get guys extended rests. Obviously it's a fourth
game in four days now, we talk three and three
and two and two. But how how important is kind
of managing those moments of either calling timeouts to stop
momentum or to give your guys extra rest.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah, we get we get fifteen extra seconds in the
timeouts tonight because we're on national TV, so that should
help they do We'll probably use one of the first half,
but also substituting around those media timeouts. I think they
get some guys some extended rest and maybe even go
deeper into the bench. You know that toront Allen didn't
play in the first two games, but gave it grace
minutes yesterday played seven minutes, had a bucket. You know,
he's a bigger, physical guy that can guard some of
(03:35):
their guys on the front line. And then Houston Memory
is a guy that we got to get in there
tonight just from a rebounding standpoint guy that can ball
screen and roll. And maybe we got to play a
little deeper, you know, you know, with Trent getting more minutes,
and then you know, Eric Timco and Niles Land only
played like twenty one to twenty two minutes, so those
guys should be pretty fresh tonight. But just trying to
buy maybe buy John cav and Posh a little bit
(03:56):
of a blow. I don't necessarily feel like Posh needs
to get a rest. I feel like he play forty
minut every night. He never gets tired. But the other
two guys, with how many minutes they played out the
last couple days, just being smart with managing some rest
for them.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Lster should be tired. He had to work hard against
a pressure against William Mary yesterday. But it's good to
hear that he may not be. Let's talk a little
bit strategy wise. Niles in the first two games, first
three games has been so fantastic. I feel like he
can guard anybody in the league, in the country. Sometimes
when he's turning on the way that he is. He's
had clear assignments CJ. Leuster versus Stony Brook, Dugan versus Campbell,
(04:28):
and then Dorsey and some switches we talked about against
william Mary there's a two headed monster against Townson. So
who does Niles get the assignment of. Is it a
hot of the player of the year or Williamson who
had thirty two.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
Yes, I would say both. He's going to start on Tahta,
But you know, Williamson has been the closer for them
at the end of the game the last couple of weeks,
So I would expect at the end of the game
that Niles will have that matchup and Cavin will start
on Williamson. He wanted that matchup. I thought he did
a very good job on him down at towsand and
just trying to frustrate him with some strength and some
body position. He made seven threes yesterday. We got to
(05:00):
try to run him off the line, and then I
think Nile's quickness on tahta really good routes keeping him
off the backboard. We also got to be really good
in transition and not let them get any easy stuff
in transition. So Nile's gonna have to know another great effort,
But we're gonna have to play great on the defensive
end and rebound the basketball. We're gonna have a chance tonight.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
How do you defend Dylan Williamson in terms of in reality?
What are you coaching your team to do against the
guy that sometimes it's just better offense, sometimes he's just
making shots. But what is the strategy to slow down a.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Guy like Yeah, I think we got to throw a
lot of different things at him. You know, we'll play
some zone, we'll double some ball screens, we'll one or
two passes away, completely deny him and not let it
get back to him. But you know, some nights you're
just gonna have to make him work and if he
makes some tough, tough twos or tough threes. I do
think we don't want to let him get comfortable from
the three point line, so you're really getting into him
when he's outside the arc. And making him a two
(05:48):
point shooter I think can really help us. And then
you know, just giving him different looks, making him think
tark taha, all those guys. You know, we just got
to be really good in discipline, play without foulon.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Ready to take on the Townsend Tigers for the third
time this season. I can't get an interview after yesterday's
game without mentioning John Cam then eight of ten from
three point range thirty six points, a ca to winnet
record for Delaware. I mean, he was just he was
lights out. He was fantastic. Besides telling him to go
do it again, how will you get John Cam that
involved today against obviously a different set defense.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, I mean I think we have to see how
they're gonna guard him a little bit. You know, they're
gonna probably put Suliman on them and be physical with
them and not probably drop coverage on the ball screens.
You know, we got to try to get him in
some screening situations where we're screening for him off the
ball to be able to get some looks and maybe
get downhill or some of our staggers where he can
curl it and get to the basket. I do think
getting out in transition helps us. You know, Soloman will
(06:42):
be around the basket and then getting John out and
Posh and those guys really trying to push the tempo.
But he also has to like let the game come
to him. I think that is something not feel like
he has to do too much or force things. We
have great balance, great versatility with that group that plays
a lot of minutes, a lot of guys can score
the basketball. So just you know, let it come to him,
you know, hunt his offense. But also he can be
(07:02):
a playmaker for us. You know, I think he had
thirty some points last night, seven rebounds, five assists. Some
games he's had seven or eight or sists. So continue
to just do what our team needs to do to
help us win.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
And then wrapping this one up. Coach, you gotta feel like
playing with house money, the pressure is on the one
seed in this game. Is that part of the message
to the team.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
Yeah, I mean, you know, those guys are smart enough
to know they tows US had a great year. You know,
they won the regular season championship. We're familiar with them.
We played them twice every year since I've been here.
But you know, we do feel like we played two
really good basketball games against him. If we can just
clean up a couple things, taking care of the basketball
and rebounding the basketball, let's see if we can get
them tight on national TV tonight.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Which only because I'm superstitious, I'm going to end of
the conversation the same way that we've done the last
three games. For Delaware to play for a trophy tomorrow night,
Delaware would have done what against the time.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
Been great on the defensive backboard. I think if we
rebound the basketball and again don't turn the ball over,
we got a shot.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Right coach, We look forward to it. Thanks so much, Scott.
That's our head coach, Martinagles. We will take one last
time out and we come back. It's a semi final
round tip off. His next on ninety four to seven
