Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Tuesday Night Championship on ninety four to seven w DSDFM.
The title is on the line tonight Delaware versus UNCW.
We are getting closer to tip off fom Scott Klatskin
alongside Martin Ingles be Now, coach, before we get into things,
have you replied to all of the messages I'm sure
you've gotten yesterday. Has everyone gotten a chance to get
a reply back from Coach Engle?
Speaker 2 (00:21):
I tried to get back to everybody, but we got
right into preparation stuff. I think the problem is once
you start replying, then they start texting you back, so
they tech messages keep going up, they don't go down.
So but throughout the day today and last night, I
was able to get back to most people.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
I know you answered the phone when when Bill Harmon
gave a call. You're a good man. You're a good
man for that. Let's talk basketball though. We're having some fun.
It's been such a fun ride, a magical ride for
Delaware and tonight against UNSW you guys will play for
a championship. We've talked in this pregame show about a
game plan, execution, what needs to get done in a
basketball game, and then I feel like the last four
(00:56):
games your team has done exactly as you've described. How
has this team gotten so locked in and just been
able to execute two a t as you described it.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Yeah, I mean it's just a belief in each other,
a belief in what we're doing. And you know, we're
in a win or go home situation. So a lot
of these guys have one or two more games in
their college career, whatever it may be, and they just
continue to come every day focus on what we're trying
to do. We got the win on Friday, which again
I think gave us great confidence. And then you're playing
(01:26):
great basketball at the right time, and it's an unselfish group.
It's not just one guy. I think we've been really
good and tough and physical and defensive end. We're going
to need that at an all time level tonight. And
then you know, it's a group that's really scoring the basketball,
you know, So if we can continue to share and
make shots and put a lot of pressure on their defense,
I think we got a great chance tonight.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
You've put together a stellar coaching job as well. We've
got to talk to your assistance after every game and
just a fantastic job by all of them and your
staff to put together those plans that your team has
been executing. We've also talked about how you guys have
been playing with house money. The pressure's been on the
other team, and I think you could sense that a
little bit with touson. They were a little tight yesterday
as a number one seeds against the twelve seed. Now
(02:06):
the tides have turned a little bit because you've got
some national attention. People are in tune to this game.
America's team i've seen, or the third team ever to
win five and five. Niles was on Sports Center this
morning as the number one play. How do you avoid
that pressure seeping in for your team and not feeling like, oh,
now we have to complete the tap.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Yeah, I don't think we have any pressure. I mean,
I think obviously you're competing for a championship. You go
into every season wanting to win a regular season title
and put yourself in a position to get to the
NCAA tournament. And we're one game, forty minutes away from
being able to do that. You know, just like last
night we talked about, Hey, they were the number one seed,
they had a great crowd. It was a road game
for us, Let's continue to hang around and put all
the pressure on them. And I think through that run
(02:48):
we had in the second half, you kind of broke
their spirit a little bit. We reguard and they were
fighting it, we were scoring, and we want to be
in that same type of position tonight. You know, this
is a team that super talented. They beat us twice
in the regular season. They beat us by thirty on
Senior Night. You know, I know our guys remember that
and that was a short period of time ago, but
you know, we got to stay true to what we've
(03:09):
done over the last couple of days and the toughness,
the physicality, the fight that we've had and you know,
again taken informative segments.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
Well, let's talk about that game, because it was ten
days ago, it feels like ten seasons ago when we
went down to unsw and lost by a large margin.
What was teachable from that game? What did you notice
on film that they can be adjusted for this game tonight.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
Well, at the moment, we at the moment we flushed it.
You know, we just got back to campus and didn't
even show any clips from it. But you know, as
we prepared starting out I guess eleven o'clock last night.
You know, we were able to put some clips in
to the scout that we showed our guys today from
more just from a system and style standpoint, not personnel
because we were familiar with them, but just you know,
we got to be good with the basketball. We got
(03:49):
to work to get great shots. We can't have any
shooting turnovers, which I think we did at their place,
stuff around the basket with their size, and then we
got to be a great guard in the three point
line and do a much better job on their two
front line o bi Oha and McGriff. They played very
well against us the two games we played, so just
got to be physical. We got to show some different bodies,
show some different things on the defensive end, and then
(04:10):
you know, see if we can get out in transition
to make some shots.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Talking with our head coach Martin gles Be getting ready
for Dell to take on UNCW and the CAAA championship game.
Talk about Obioha. He's a massive guy. We've talked about
him in the past. McGriff does a nice job of
rebounding and playing in the post as well. How does
Delaware do a better job against such size rebound in
the basketball and how important will beat it to try
to keep the ball out of the post tonight.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah, I mean, I think we got to do a
really good job fronting him in the post and trying
to get some help on the backside. I don't think
we were very good in our two games against them.
We were trying to three quarter. We played some zone again.
We're gonna have to live with some of those two
and you know, maybe it's two's against threes because obviously
Newbie is a talented guy, second team All League guy,
kind of the heart and soul of their team, very experienced.
(04:51):
You know, if we can do a better job guarding
the three point line to some of their perimeter guys,
and you can live with a little bit of that
stuff around the basket. We just can't allow their front
line to guess in foul trouble. And then we got
to be able to just but try to keep them
on their heels with some changing defenses. Maybe we got
double the post. We gotta play behind, we're gonna front,
We're gonna do some different things to just try to,
you know, continue to get some stops.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
You mentioned Donovan Newbie similar awareness to maybe Williamson yesterday
and whose task will down of anubie bit.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Yeah, I mean CAVN will start on him just like
he did Williamson yesterday. But Niles, I'm sure we'll guard
him at some point. Just can't let him get off him.
He took nineteen shots yesterday and made a bunch of threes,
made the big three to kind of win the game
for them yesterday. So we just got to be really
good with our routes on him, find him in transition
and make him a two point shooter.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
You've done so well. I think this whole weekend and
into Monday now and to Tuesday it with tempo, pushing
the ball when it's there and then slowing and working
for good shots at the end of the shot clock
when you need to slow that down. How much will
tempo play a factor in tonight's game?
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Yeah, I think it's important, you know, especially when Obio
has out there, we have an advantage in transition and
trying to make him guard us, make him change shots
at the floor, you know, end line to end line,
and maybe get some opportunities. We've got to be strategic
with like our ball screens and how do we get
to the second and third side to be able to
get some good looks. We're going to switch a lot
of stuff, probably one through four and maybe even one
(06:08):
through five when McGriff's in there. So if we get
a defensive rebound, which is really important for us. They
send a lot of guys to the offensive backboard, the
best offensive rebounding team in the league. If we can
secure some, then we got to be able to challenge
them and transition. And again, it's all about getting great shots.
You know, every possession of this game is going to matter.
We cannot have any shooting turnovers. We can't turn the
ball over, we can't be loose with it. But if
we can really value the basketball work to get great shots,
(06:30):
then you know we can be right there in the end.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
I think you just mentioned most of the keys. But
for Delaware to win what would be their second championship
in four years in the CAAA, they will have done what.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Yeah, I think we got to be great defensively and
rebound the basketball. If we can do that, I think
we'll execute on the offensive end and be able to
get some opportunities there. But we got to have the
same mindset mentality that we had the last four days
on the defensive end.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Goach, you're the best.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
I appreciate you, all right, Scott, thanks man, all right, Coach,
go get it.
