Speaker 1 (00:00):
Another day in Washington, DC, getting closer to tip off
Delaware versus William and Mary in the quarterfinal round. Delaware
the lowest seeded teams ever advanced to the quarterfinal. Let's
keep it moving. We're here with our head coach, Martin Engelesby.
As we got closer to tip off yesterday, thirty three
field goals made the most ever in a CAAA contest
in Delaware history.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
I'll get back to.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
The offense, but we got to start with defense. That
defensive effort absolutely phenomenal. After the first ten minutes of
the ballgame, you held Campbell to just thirty seven percent
from the field. Dugan did not score a point in
the first half. You all, you know all these things,
but I want to get your thoughts on just the
effort as a team defensively.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Yeah, and I think we set the tone obviously reminded
them about how the game in New York went. They
had fifty eight points in the second half. They only
scored sixty two yesterday. You know, I think Niles Lanes
defense on Dougan was unbelievable, really slowed him down, took
him out of what he wanted to do. He's a
very talented offensive guy, and then just collectively, like us,
digging in and getting stops and rebounding the basketball was
really important. When we do that, then we can get
(00:57):
out and do some stuff on the offensive end. We
had some transition opportunities, but just really proud of our defense.
That's what's got to be like to be able to
advance in March, and we're going to need another great
effort today.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
That's what you told us we needed yesterday when we
spoke to you at the pregame show. What differences did
you see, though, obviously this team has struggled a bit
throughout the season defending and rebounding. Three players had double
digit rebounds yesterday you were plus nine in that category.
Was there a difference you saw out there from your team.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Yeah, I mean it's a big emphasis transition defense.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
You know, when they were able to kind of get
back in the game at our place and take the lead,
you know, they were able to get some stuff out
in transition. I thought our ability to take care of
the basketball, handle their pressure and not let them get
anything easy really helped us. And then we just kind
of kept bodies on bodies. We didn't switch as much
with Dugan. We didn't let those perimeter guys post up
our guys and have a disadvantage there. So I just
think it started with Niles staying on Dougan for thirty
(01:48):
nine minutes. I think that's what he played, and then
just being in a great position. You know we're going
to need it again, that same type of discipline today
against a team that plays very similar to Campbell, where
they're spreading you out, they're trying to hit the post,
a lot of Princeton action, backcuts, all that kind of stuff,
and our guys really executed the game plan.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
And then Niles Lamb I mean just not only was
he fantastic defensively, maybe the best defensive game, and Christian
Union is in the post game said he was probably
the best on ball defender in the CAAA, maybe in
the country when he's doing it the right way, and
I don't disagree. I mean, yesterday's effort was fantastic, but
also on offense, he had twenty four points, match the
career high six dunks. He was outstanding. How sustainable is that,
(02:27):
I guess for Niles over the course of a tourny.
This is now Game three, and we'll get into that
a little bit. But are we gonna see more switching
today or is he gonna follow Dorsey around? What's the
plan defensive?
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yeah, I mean he'll start on Dorsey. Last time we
played William m.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Mary, I think was our best defensive effort of the season,
especially in the CAA play. From an efficiency standpoint, you know,
we'll switch one through four anytime there's dribble handoffs for them,
balls involved will switch, But Niles will start on Dorsey.
We gotta have a great awareness of him, probably not
much his own today because they're pretty efficient against it.
So kind of half court Manda Man and then we
got to be able to execute on the offensive end.
But you know, when Niles keeps it simple on the
(03:00):
offensive end, is able to get downhill and transition, be
able to.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Cut off some of our stuff.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
He's a beautiful offensive player and not feel like he
has to force things. And my biggest thing is like
early in the game, like letting it come to him right.
He doesn't need to try to do too much early
in a possession, but when he kind of deffers a
little bit unless those other guys create, he really can
benefit from a lot of those opportunities.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
In the first half.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
As you can to talk about offense nine as sist
only one turnover in the first half, how important it is.
Pace and ball security, not turn the ball over. Going
to be today against Way Mary. They like to pressure.
I think they lead the lead in steels per game.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Yeah, it's a big key for us. Obviously, third game
in three days. You know, we can't get this in
the eighties and nineties. You know, we got to be
able to attack their pressure for good looks. But if
we miss one or two opportunities, then we got to
downshift a little bit and run offense. You know, we
can't just keep shooting threes. We'll take layups, we'll take dunks,
will take wide open threes. But also you know, trying
to get our guys understanding, like we can rest on offense,
(03:53):
and we might have to do that. Obviously we are
our starting group played a lot of minutes yesterday. We
need some more minutes out of trend and making emory
and you know, maybe a little smaller group.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Today to be able to switch a lot other stuff.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
But we want to continue to attack, but we also
want to be able to execute in the half court
and maybe slow it slow the game down and control Tempa.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Talk with our head coach Martin Nagles because you get
closer to tip off Dello versus William and Mary this
way Mary Tribe team. They go quickly. I know you
guys are quick in terms of pace, but third in
the NLA and the shortest possessions and then third in
the n SUBLA in percentage of three point shots, in
terms of over half of their shots are going to
be from beyond the arc. What type of pressure does
that put on a defense?
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (04:28):
I mean when we played them the first time, I
think I looked over I'm not even sure their game start,
and then guys were going to the scores table.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
To sub it. I was like, wow, that that's uh.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
You know, you get used to it, you get used
to the kind of constant rotation. I think we've got
to be really good with our matchups, uh, and great
guarding a three point line.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
They're gonna shoot threes. They're gonna shoot a lot of them.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
You know, we got to not fall any jump shooters,
but you know, not overreact when they make one or
two because that is one of their greatest strengths.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
You know, they're gonna play fast.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
It's a little bit like you know, Brian Hill is
a great friend of mine and he did a heck
of a job at Cornell kind of establishing a style
of play. He took it to William and Mary and
this group really believes in what they're doing. So, you know,
we got to be really good and not let them
get confident on the offensive end, great with our routes, disciplined,
no back cuts, and be great guard in the three
point line.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
And then finish with the rebound. Finish with a defensive rebound.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
You would do that yesterday for sure? Is that part
of the messago was this team Gabe dors He's gonna
take a lot of threes. He's gonna make a lot
of threes. He shoots forty six percent of the field.
Is that kind of don't overreact, We'll get back and
some are going to go in some or not.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Yeah, we just got to you know, not let him
get confident, you know, make him work for all this stuff.
He's a guy who's gonna shoot a lot of jump shots.
So in transition and then through all their actions, you know,
just not fouling him and just trying to disrupt any
rhythm that he has. Again, he's probably gonna take ten
plus threes and you go make a couple. He's the
second team All Conference, really good players, you know, experienced
guy in their programs got the green lights.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
So you know Niles will guard them.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
Other guys will be going on on the making, will
have to guard him a little bit, but just kind
of try to frustrate him. And then we ought to
make these guys guard on the defensive end too. A
lot of different bodies in there. We got to be
able to tack them and get great stuff.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
I know I asked you a version of this question yesterday,
but it still applies. And now it's your third game
in three days. Now, you've done that before, but typically
it you're playing against another team that has played three
games in three days and it's maybe for a championship.
Right now it's your third game, it's their first. How
does that factor in today, if at all?
Speaker 2 (06:09):
It's a good question.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
I mean I think they I ran into their coach
Brian or He's like, I hope you guys don't have
any gas in the tank left today. But you know,
I think these guys are conditioned. You know, we got
a little bit of an older group they're ready to go.
You kind of feed off some emotion and momentum. Obviously,
hopefully we're confident heading into the game today, and then
you know, we got to be able to try to
find some opportunities to rest some guys, whether it's going
(06:32):
into a media timeout, get a guy a blow or
two around some media timeouts to get some extended rest.
And maybe we got to show some zone to be
able to rest a little bit on the defensive And
not that we're going to kind of let them have anything,
but if we're a little fatigued with the pace and
the tempo, how do we manage that and mask what
we're trying to do.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
Well And the same way I have the last two
days because it's worked for Delaware to play again tomorrow
and the semifin around Delaware would have done what today.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Yeah, I think we got to be really good against
their pressure, you know, not turn the basketball over. This
is a group that has handled pressure pretty well. But
we do have to you know, value the basketball and
look to attack on the offensive end, and then you know,
let's be great on the defensive end like we were yesterday.
If we can do that, then we got a chance
to advance to the semifinals tomorrow night.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
All right, coach, keep it going, all right, thanks Scott.
That's our head coach, Martin Eagles. We will take one
last time out. We come back Delaware versus William Mary.
It's a curdle final round here in Washington, dcx
