Speaker 1 (00:00):
Cedric, it is great seeing you again.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
We're gonna be chatting all about your smash A Better
World with David Ghetta coming up. We're gonna get to
know you a little better coming up. Also talk about
your new smash that you've got coming out next week.
We got a lot to talk about. Cedric Gervais, Welcome
to America's Dance thirty.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Thanks for having me. Man, it's good to see you dance.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Counting down the biggest dance songs in the country. This
is America's Dance thirty.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
It's great seeing you two. Congratulations on the amazing success
of A Better World with David Getta. It is climbing
the chart quick.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Thank you. I'm very happy about it. You know, it's
a very different record and we're very proud of that record.
We wanted to bring back that French house sound. That's
what we discussed when we did this record, and people
are really loving it. It's really crazy when you do
something that you love and you just do it purely
(01:11):
for the music and not thinking about radio or anything
like that. It's just connect with people. It's unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Yeah, it's such a feel good song.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
I can't wait to talk about how it was born
with David Gheta coming up, but first let's get to
know Cedric Gervais a little better with Finkey's first. All right,
So I always love finding out the origin story of artists.
I know that you were DJing as a teenager in
(01:40):
France before you came here to the US. But was
music the first thing that you wanted to get into
or was there something else you wanted to be when
you grew up.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Actually, I was going to be a soccer football player,
soccer player in America obviously, but football in France, and
I was training to become a pro, and just I
fell in love with music and I was just going
to nightclubs every weekend, raves on the weekend and everything,
and that's just like I knew. And the first time
(02:10):
I tell a story all the time I saw Dat
Bunk performing live for the first time, and it was
in the club in Marseille and they had no mask, nothing,
and I was sitting in front of them watching them play,
and I was like I went home that night. I
was like, this is it's I want to do this.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Now this is possibly going to be a stupid question,
But when you saw them without their masks performing. Was
it totally different vibe or was it pretty much the same?
Speaker 3 (02:36):
No, it was the same because they know the way
they performed. They have like a TV three or three
year roll and they had like drum machine nine or
nine eight o eights computers everything, so they were making
music live. They weren't DJing, they were making the music live.
They were performing the album a live basically life for us.
And it's like we knew the way they look in
(02:58):
France because they start it with no mask. Uh. It was.
It was just incredible. I went home and I was like,
this is.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
It and seeing artists doing the music live is amazing.
I remember seeing I think it was uber Zone. Do
you remember uber Zone? Mm hmm, I think it was them.
I saw in a club and they were playing like
the drum kit live and blowing it up, and I'm like,
what is happening right now?
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Is just amazing.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Yeah, it's it's a it's a it's a different it's
a different thing when somebody actually performed the music live,
it's it's something else because they actually they were doing
they were performing the album live. Each machines were doing something.
It's it's just insane.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
That is so incredible.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Now, think back to the beginning of Cedric Gervais when
you were trying to decide on an artist project name.
Was Cedric Gervay your first choice or were there other
names you were considering?
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Are you're gonna laugh? So I was. I was it's
obviously not my last name. And I was in an
AFT with a friend of mine and I was looking
for a DJ name. And it was like eight in
the morning when we went on a bender like everything.
And I don't know why. You have to understand, Gerveis
(04:13):
is a very famous yogurt in France called Gervais. I
swear to God. So my friend looks at me and
I'm stup and he stoup and he looks at me
and he goes, you're going to call yourself Cedric Gervais.
And I looked at him and I swear to you.
I went wow, and that was it.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
I totally know what you're talking about, because I've been
in that position where I've been up and I came
up with kind of brilliant ideas and it normally lasts afterwards.
I'm like, wow, that was a good idea.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
Now you get me.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Yeah, totally get you. Now.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
I'm not gonna hold it against you that you played
for the Florida Panthers during their Stanley Cup run since
I'm a Lightning fan, so I'm not gonna hold it
against you. And of course, no, I know you've got
to do it, hey.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
But listen, you're still in Florida though, absolutely, come on,
you gotta you gotta go for the Florida people.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
But you know, Lightning and Florida Panthers, I.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
Know, but that's that's my team, you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Yeah, No, that was amazing that you got to do that.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
And of course you've played all over the world, including
doing amazing Yes.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
And by the way, we did something very special for
the Florida Panthers and Florida Panthers only did we redid
my song Molly and instead of saying where's Molly, where's Stanley?
And I redid it just for them, and they were
playing it in the stadium and they played out of
the parade as well everywhere, so they were looking for
Stanley and guess what they find it.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
Well, then, now I'm gonna hold it against you.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
So of course you've done that show, You've played all
over the world. You did an amazing show at Coachella
as well, but do you remember the first time performing
for a crowd?
Speaker 3 (06:05):
One another funny story. So my cousins were organizing raves
back in the day. They were the biggest one in
South of Front and I was just a kid with
my practicing playing techno vinyls in my grandmother's basement and
I would go to every single rave that my cousin
(06:26):
brings my vinyls in case one day they need me.
They called me up and they'd be like, you gotta
go whatever, And never I did, like twenty raves, they
never called me up. I break carry my vinyl cases. Everything,
never showed me up. And the day came that one
DJ got so couldn't perform, so they all turned me
(06:47):
and they're like, you're ready, And there was like three
thousand people ten am in the morning in the field.
I had no idea what I was doing. I came in,
I started DJing. People were screaming this and I was
mixed saying I took a couple of the mix, but
people were going crazy, and I remember I stopped after
one hour and I couldn't speak. I was like completely speechless.
(07:09):
People were like, man, you killed it. How do you feel?
I couldn't respond to nobody. I was just that was
my first show ever.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Wow, that is amazing. There's really only down from there.
I mean, that's an amazing first experience.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
Yeah, that was That was unbelievable. I like I said,
I was speechless. And then obviously I didn't play for
another six month after that, but it was my first show.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
That's incredible.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
Well, finally, in Finkey's first besides A Better World with
David Ghetta, you've had some iconic songs, including of course
Summertime Sadness, which you want to Grammy for. But do
you remember the first dance song that made you all
in love with E D M.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
There's many there's Back in the days, merk was a big,
you know thing in south of France. Why don't you
reach for me? Mirk Uh. They used to be do
so many amazing records. There was a song called Ministry
of Love. Well Romantony was the singer on it. That
(08:22):
was a song obviously a lot of French record DJ
Falcon Cassius you wo yeah, you know Cassius le Mouche.
I don't know if you remember that record. La mouche.
So many, there's so many, there's not one song, there's
so many songs in that area of time.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
You know, I'm surprised you didn't mention any daft punk.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
No, obviously daft punk. Yeah, all the albums. I mean,
we grew up with it, rolling and scratching. The first
time I heard it in a rave it was nine
in the morning and the DJ dropped that thing and
I was like, like mind blown, like it was insane.
Obviously daft punk, you have to mention that bunk. But
I was just giving you all the you.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Know, yeah, absolutely, I'm still waiting. I asked that a lot,
and I'm still waiting for an artist to say the
ones that I fell in love with, and nobody has
said it, like I fell in love with Josh Wink
Higher State of Consciousness.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
Oh no, absolutely Josh. By the way, Josh is a
good friend of mine. I love I love a lot
of him dearly. And that's a massive record and in
South of France was one of the biggest rave record ever.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
Unbelievable songs.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
Unbelievable that and Lustrol every time that was that was
another one of mine that just I heard that. I'm
and I was up when I heard it for the
first time, I'm like, what is this? And it's been
one of my favorites. So how was this smash born?
With David Ghetta?
Speaker 3 (09:46):
When I heard the lyrics of the original and what's
happening right now in the world, is like such a
great message, you know what I mean? And I brought
it to David and I said, listen, man, this is
a this is a great sample. This is a great
feel good record. You know, people need to feel good
right now. We don't need any you know, any negativity
or any noise or you know what I'm saying like that.
(10:08):
I just wanted to make a feel good record. David
was like when I played him the sample, he was like, wow,
this is a massive idea. So it's like, let's work
on it. And we got on right away, and we
wanted to do it French house. We wanted to do
you know, the French touch, like back in the days,
and I hope we did that. And it's an amazing record.
(10:30):
I'm very proud of that record.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
How long ago did you guys start working on it.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
Here's a funny story. I played a record for David.
I did a demo, a small demo play for him,
and then I was like, you know what, put it aside.
I don't like it. And then one day I was
working on something else, I say, David, why don't we
do this? And then he's the one He's like, but
where's that record that should play me? I was like,
(10:54):
what are you talking about? He goes the Better World,
where is that record? I said, no, but it's not working.
He goes that you crazy. So he's the one that
actually put it back to life because I can that
record to the side, and he's the one that brought
it back, so all credit to him. And then I
say you sure. It's like, dude, bring this record back.
We got to work on it.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
That is mind blowing to me because he works on
so many songs to like keep that in the back
of his mind.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
Yeah. No, no, he had it in the back of
his mind. Now he's very good with that. He knew
that that was a good record, and he goes, bring
it back. We got to work on this. Wow.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
Congratulations on all the success of that one. Let's talk about
your new smash that's dropping next week with Alex Mills.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
How was that song born?
Speaker 3 (11:38):
So this this song is amazing. It's actually worked with
Alex Mill. After that song, I had this song written
I recorded in Miami. We're looking for a singer for
this and Ultra recommended Alex Mill. I mean, obviously I
knew who she was and she nailed it. Then I
(11:58):
flew to the UK and work with her on other records.
I got two more records with her in the preparing
with her. But but the funny thing is the sound
of this record is very similar to Better Word, and
it's not I didn't try like like it's just like
that record landed like this and I produced it that
(12:18):
way franch house, you know, whold disco sample filter under it.
And then so we have the success now with David
with this song, So my my sound is going to
follow this record. It's just but I didn't do it
in purpose. It was just like it just came along
like that. But it's an incredible record, needs your love.
I think people are gonna love this record, and uh
(12:39):
and the two other record we have with Alex Mill
even better than that.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
Well, I can't wait to hear them. I'm still a
fan of I think it was chemistry that you put out,
which was just an amazing.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
Her vocals are incredible.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
Yeah, vocals and in the studio she's so talented. They
say it's insane. Like I was in the UK. I
worked a week there and and she would I wish
should put a beat on and she would like vibe
and write and it's insane, insane.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
That is amazing. Well, congratulations on that one as well.
Besides your new song with Alex Mills, what's next for
Cedric Gervay?
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Well, I have a remix of the Black Keys that
I've just done of the new album, the song No Rain,
No Flowers. It's called Diplo remixed it myself. I remixed it.
It's coming out, I think in August. It's a really
really good song. It's an incredible song that they wrote.
It's actually written by Rick Knowles who wrote Summertime Sannas.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
Oh wow.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
So yeah, yeah, so it's an incredible song and yes,
it's coming on in August.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
You know, before I Let You Go, I asked Chatchy
BT to give me a question that Cedric Gervais has
never been asked before. So I gotta test this out
all right, exactly now. If your Life was made into
a movie and the trailer had to be scored with
just one of your drops? Which drop would it be?
(14:03):
And who would play you in the movie? Oh boy,
let me start with You've never been asked that before? Right?
Speaker 3 (14:10):
Yeah? Never? No, let's start with a drop.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
Don't say Molly, no, no, no, no no.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
I think the drop I'm gonna say wake me up
that I didn't. You can't listen to that. It's It's
an incredible song. And who will play me in the movie?
Very easy? Can you read? It's funny because people say
that I look like him, like John Wick. When I
had my hair longer, everybody thought I was John Wick.
So can you read?
Speaker 1 (14:38):
I smoothly see it?
Speaker 2 (14:40):
I thought you were gonna say, listen, I will do
a movie about myself, but I have to play myself.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
That would be very French of you to say that.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Well, Centric Jerva, It is always awesome seeing you. Congratulations
on everything going on. Thank you so much for your
time with us. On America's Dan's thirty.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
Thank you my brother, I See you soon. America's Dance thirty.
