(00:00):
I want to do the Friday fourearly today just to make sure that we
had plenty of time to discuss this. Matt Case is my producer. So
last weekend was WrestleMania, which hasnow become a two night event. Many
people have created the tradition either ofgoing to WrestleMania, which changes site year
to year, but also you haveyou know, the people that are trying
(00:27):
to skimp together enough money to goeven just once and try to you know,
see all the wrestling that weekend. This week's The Masters, the Greens
of Augusta, And it got meto think, you know, those are
a couple of great examples. Imean you could throw the Final Four in
there too. What events are onyour bucket list? Now, these don't
(00:50):
have to be sports, It doesn'thave to be you know, anything specific.
The only thing specifically that it hasto be is a predictable event that
is reoccurring, like an event thatyou know annually will happen or bi annually
(01:11):
or every four years or heck, every ten years maybe I don't know.
But something that is predictable and regularthat you go to and you want to
put on your bucket list. Whatare the four things on this bucket list
that you want to go to andexperience at least once in your life,
no matter what the teams are,no matter what the parameters, the event
(01:33):
itself is what you want to bethere for, gotcha. So it has
to be reoccurring, and there can'tbe stipulations like only if this is happening
or if this band is playing. It's literally all about the actual event.
I want to go there, andI don't even need to see what bands
are playing. I want to gosee this. I don't care what teams
are playing. That's the kind ofthing that we're talking about. Here.
(01:56):
Four events highest right now on yourbucket list that are reoccurring that you would
like to experience at least once.Matt, you have the honors. Okay,
all right, So I did somethinking about this, okay, as
I always do, and I cameup with the list. I've actually got
(02:19):
five, but I've got to limitit to four. You gotta make it
far. Got a hanging chad there, I'm gonna have to, you know,
do some slicing and dice and gethim out of there. Number one.
This is on the list, Iwould say. Top of the reasons
why this is on the list becauseis there a better festival for people watching
than Burning Man? Mmm, gottahave Burning Man on the list. People
(02:44):
watching and uh maybe, uh,you know an experience or two that changes
my perspective on things. Yeah, and you don't have to go super far
for that. That's a United Statesthing, isn't it. Yeah. Black
Rock City, Nevada a week long, large desert event focused on community,
art, self expression, and selfreliance. Yeah, something like that,
(03:05):
something like that. Next one isthe Cooper's Hill cheese Rolling. Now.
See, I watched there was aNetflix show that talked about like it's called
We Are the Champions. In oneof the episodes was about the cheese rolling.
That's why this is on the list. Yeah, I mean, it's
just that is a unique one,for sure. I want to provide the
(03:28):
caveat that I have no interest inparticipating because I like my clavicles, I
like my collar bones. Oh yeah, people say that stuff gets broken on
the right. Yeah. This isa very steep hill. Yes, And
basically people chase a seven to ninepound roll our wheel of cheese down a
(03:51):
steep hill. Whoever gets down therefirst or catches it wins. It's an
annual event held near Gloucture in England. Yeah. Yeah, so the third
on the list is kind of similarto this one. You got cheese.
Now, if you're making a pizza, you're gonna need some tomatoes. So
I got La Tomatina. Have youever seen anything about this? No?
(04:14):
Okay, it's in Spain. It'sin the Banol, Spain. It's an
annual festival where people throw to tomatoesat each other. Oh, I thought
this was like the Catalina wine mixer, the similar similar, But yeah,
basically a whole lot of people aroundthe world convene in Banuol, Spain to
throw tomatoes at each other. AndI think it looks hilarious and you want
(04:38):
to be there, And I lovetomatoes. So I mean, of all
the things that you could go see, you want to go to a Spanish
event that people throw tomatoes at eachother. Well, I love tomatoes.
It's my favorite vegetable because I willnot I know, people say it's a
fruit technicality, but it'll always bea vegetable in my heart. It's my
(04:58):
favorite vegetable because apples are my favoritefruit. You know, So you're just
making up stuff now, Yeah, they're not vegetables. I live by my
own rules. They're not vegetables whereJordan and I do my own thing,
you know. But but you're you'rechanging the definition of what something is,
right, You're actually affecting what athing is by the way that you're talking.
(05:18):
And who says, I can't Iam, it's it's it's it's a
fruit. I'm pretty clearly a fruit. But here's here, here's the thing
though, I'm allowing myself to dothat. I think you deciding you wanted
to go to a festival in Spainwhere all they do is throw tomatoes at
each other just because you like tomatoes, even though you miscast them as vegetables
(05:41):
and not fruit, which they are. And you're I'm supposed to believe all
this. Yes, okay, fine, go ahead. Next. Now I
got two left here, and oneof them I just found out about.
It doesn't go on the list, shouts out to Frozen Dead Guy Days.
It does? Does it make thelist? What intarnation I just found out
(06:02):
about. It was fascinated, butthen it was like in Dead Guys,
Yeah, Frozen Dead Guy Days. It's out there in Colorado, out by
the Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, some of the frozen dead guys. Yeah,
some Norwegian guy back in nineteen eightynine got cryogenically froze his deceased grandfather
(06:23):
and they throw a celebration about it. Guys, and you you would go
to this well, I thought itlooked kind of funny and cool and yeah,
oh my my list is going tobe way better than yours. All
right, so what is actually numberfour? Actual? Number four? I've
oh, I mean, going hereis the bucket list. So being a
part of the festival has got tobe. This is an easy lock for
(06:45):
the bucket list. The UFO Festivalin Roswell, New Mexico, a two
day festival includes renowned speakers and experts, movie screenings, and and the Alien
Abduction Dash fun run. What's thatmean? I don't know. Are you
abducted by aliens? I'm sure somepeople are dressed up as aliens and they
(07:08):
chase you. But it's a funrun, you know, you know there's
fun run. I mean, there'sa Maverick run going on down at Elmwood
Park for you and O like thisweekend or next weekend or something like that.
It's probably the same distance except noweirdos and alien costumes is gonna be
chasing you and you're definitely not goingto see an alien. So that's yeah,
(07:28):
I'm gonna pay all that money togo to Roswell for this thing.
That's a terrible list. I mean, objectively speaking, I think that might
be the worst list you've ever had. Really, i mean, just wow,
the bar very low. I'm gonnaI'm going to kill the kill this
contest, the competition between the twolists, because I actually went fairly mainstream
with mine. I'll explain and I'lltell you what my Friday for of the
(07:50):
events on my bucket list next onnews Radio eleven to ten KFAB and Ray's
Songer on News Radio eleven ten kfab, the most mainstream counterculture event you can
think of. Yeah, there yougo. That's a good way to put
it. The Cooper's Hill cheese rollingwas another that's actually pretty mainstream I think
for people that if you know aboutit, it's something that a lot of
people are like, hey, Iwant to check that out once and l
(08:11):
to Matina. Okay, this iswhere you go off the rails. I'm
pretty sure Rick Steves had an episodeabout it. Tomato to the Temple,
you know, festival in Spain wherepeople chuck tomatoes at each other. Yeah,
all right, okay. And thennext and number four the the UFO,
the UFO festival in Roswell, NewMexico. Yeah, you're a weird
(08:33):
guy. Yeah, although I thinkyou would fit in at both of those
places. I think so too.You know, people usually go to Spain
because they want to go to aPamplona and run with the bulls. Even
though I condemned that. I thinkthat's a horrible thing that they do,
and I hate that they still doit. It's one of the most ridiculous
things that mankind is allowed to happen. But no, you're gonna go to
Spain for a different type of festival. It's the one where they throw tomatoes
(08:54):
at each other. Yes, deliciousvegetables, they're true, all right,
So here mine mine are. I'ma sports guy, so heavily influenced by
sports. Again, these have tobe reoccurring and there are no caveats.
You can't just qualify it by saying, well, if this happens, then
(09:15):
I'd go here. But that's nothow this works. You are going like
the Masters. This is really theMasters. Is what a lot of people
have the Masters. I would loveto experience Augusta during the Masters. Well
that's not on my list, butthat's a good one I'd go if given
an opportunity. Well, here aremy four number. My first one,
the Kentucky Derby. I love horses. I love horse racing. The best
(09:41):
three year olds and a lot ofthe best older horses as well, are
in Churchill Downs for that specific They'rein Louisville at Churchill Downs to run that
weekend. You can see all ofthe great competition and the party, the
infield party, the seersucker suits, everybody dressing up, the fan hats,
all the celebrities that show up.And it lasts a few days. I
(10:03):
mean, Oaks Day is on theFriday, Derby days on the Saturday.
It's just a great time, right, Gotta love the Kentucky Derby. My
second one the Fiful World Cup.Okay, now the World Cup is coming
to the United States in twenty twentysix, the next World Cup. I
(10:26):
love soccer. I want everyone tounderstand how much I truly enjoy soccer.
But there's something about international soccer whereone country is facing another country and the
passion that exists within that. It'sthe World's game. It really is.
And I am going to figure outa way to get to one of those
(10:46):
games in Kansas City at least,no matter who's playing. I don't care
what country. I just want tosee. I want to be in a
stadium when a game that matters andthe fief for World Cup is going on,
and to feel that energy and feelthat passion no matter what countries are
involved. And of course you mightbe able to see some of the best
most famous athletes in the world, like the Messis or Ronaldo's or the Ambapes
(11:11):
or the next generation of those thatare coming up. Number three. Wimbledon,
h I'm a big tennis guy too. Wimbledon is kind of like my
Masters a little bit. You know, the Masters. It's really green,
it's very outdoorsy. You wander around, you follow a group or a golfer
or whatever, and uh, it'svery uppity. Well, Wimbledon has the
(11:35):
same type of uppitiness, except it'sa lot more modern and it's mono.
Imno, it's not man versus course. It is man or woman versus man
or woman or men or women indoubles. Right going into the you know,
center court at Wimbledon, at theAll England Club and watching the best
(12:01):
tennis in the world while being arounda classy audience. Generally I would feel
very upity about that, so I'dbe excited to be there. And then
the last one is Octoberfest in GermanyMunich specifically, go chuck some bees and
(12:26):
what I mean if you're a beerperson, is there a better place to
do that? You go to Munichfor the Octoberfest and just like crank out
some beers, some heffelwaisns. Youknow what I'm saying. Yeah, Like
how fun does that sound? SoI definitely we're going to Europe for the
first time. We're going to Spainand Andorra this year. But I think
(12:48):
in the not so distant future,I think Munich's gonna land on, Like
We're gonna figure out what Octoberfest isand try to go there for that.
That'll be a great time. SoKentucky Derby, the FIFA World Cup,
wimbled in in Octoberfest. Those aremy four. It's your turn. You
got a Friday four events that youwould like to go to and see in
your lifetime. You can call usa four OHO two, five, five,
eight, eleven ten four Oho twofive, five, eight, eleven
(13:11):
ten News Radio eleven ten KFAB andRaise Songer on news radio eleven ten KFAB.
We're gonna go ahead and talk moreabout this Israel thing uh with I
Ran seems to be preparing for somesort of response an Israeli attack. Israel
(13:35):
has been a little sloppy, butthere was a strike on Iran's Damascus consulate.
But we'll see if there's a responseof some kind and we'll get to
more of those details as the showgoes on. But we're having fun right
now, and we're talking about ourFriday four. A Friday four is your
(13:56):
four events that you would most liketo be a part of that are predictable
events. You're going for the event, not for a team or a band
or anything else. You're going becauseyou want to experience the event. Matt
case four reference what were your fourand was Burning Man, the Cooper's Hill
cheese rolling event in England, LaTomatina in Spain where they throw tomatoes at
(14:18):
each other, and the UFO Festivalin Roswell, New Mexico. And I
went with the Kentucky Derby, theFIFA World Cup, Wimbledon and Octoberfest in
Munich. So emails are rolling inEmory at kfab dot com. It's E
M. E R Y at kfabdot com. You can also call it's
four A two five five eight eleventen with your list four two five five
(14:39):
eight eleven ten. Ray is onthe phone line, Ray, what do
you got for me? Hey?Afternoon memory? Hey, uh, I
too want to go to New Medico. But I want to go for the
balloon launch. Oh yeah, theAlbuquerque Balloon Festival. Yeah. I would
like to get up to Oshkosh,Wisconsin for the air show. Okay,
(15:01):
that's a good one. I meanthey pulling, Yeah, they pulling planes
from all over the world up there. I want to go see the Daytona
five hundred. That's a great one. And I also want to go see
the and now see I've been Haveyou been to those tracks before? Ray?
No? No, I have not. I've been to both tracks.
(15:22):
Haven't watched the races though, Iwent on off weeks because it's a lot
easier when to do like a tourof the facility when there's nothing really important
going on. But the sheer sizeof both of them is just you just
have no idea really how big thesethings are until you get there. The
tracks themselves are just these gargantuan things, and the museums they both have are
(15:48):
just fantastic. So one percent, ray you totally check both of those places
out, especially when the events arehappening, because that's when you're going to
see you know, hundreds of thousandsof people hanging around. For sure.
There's a great list. Yreciate youcalling in. Yeah, those are good
ones if you're a race fan too. I know a lot of people that
they see the Knoxville Nationals, youknow, sprint car dirt track that just
(16:11):
happens over in Knoxville, Iowa, the sprint car capital of the world.
It's pretty cool. Terry emailed meEmory at kfab dot com said Marty Gras,
Marty Gras is good. Would yougo to Marty Graus? Sure,
I feel like I'm a little oldfor it. Is that like a college
age thing? No, No,it's a degenerate thing. Ah oh oh,
(16:37):
so that's why you asked me.Then in that case, no,
I would stay home and watch focuson the family films. Oh stop,
Yeah, of course I'd go.Yeah, I'd go to I'd like to
check it out. Terry also sayshe's actually already done this one. But
running of the bulls in Spain.Would you say, though, that that's
(16:57):
kind of the bulls revenge for allthe terrible stuff that the you know,
the bull fighting, you know.Do you know how that ends? The
running of the bulls. Yeah.Oh, they don't make it out,
no Ah, none of them do. That's sad. They run in the
streets of Pamplona. They agitate thesebulls so they'll run for some stupid reason.
(17:19):
And this is not personal terry. The marketing geniuses of Pamplona, Spain
have done a whale of a jobmaking people think this is a good idea.
And again I don't want to bepreachy here, but as an animal
guy, I have to think, what are we doing here? You're agitating
this herd of bulls that have horns, by the way, and people get
(17:41):
hurt doing this stuff all the time. Yeah, they get trampled, they
get kicked by the bull, theyget gored by the bull. It's just
really stupid to be doing in thefirst place. And they run through the
streets of Pamplona, and eventually thebulls end up in a big, old
like pit area where eventually they arebull fought, and you know how that
(18:02):
goes. The bull just continuously getsagitated, and eventually people who are professionals,
you know, for entertainment purposes, essentially just decide that they defeat the
ball by killing it. And that'show that goes. So yeah, not
(18:25):
a fan, not a fan.Not what I would consider one of the
more humane things that we do inthe world today. Yeah, that's rough.
Well, this is how long agodid they start that? How long
ago was the I mean, Iguess we need to figure this out A
long time. When was the firstrunning of the bulls in Pamplona. The
(18:51):
answer to that question is fifteen ninetyone or something, early fourteenth century.
Yeah, I just I don't Idon't like it. I don't like it.
None of it's good. Uh.There have been fifteen deaths, not
(19:11):
only people getting hurt, people havebeen killed doing this thing. I just
I don't know, man, it'sreally dumb. I'm sorry to anybody who
wanted to do this. I'm sorryfor anyone who likes this for some reason,
(19:33):
but it's just not not something Ifeel like society if we have graduated
beyond purposefully agitating animals for them tojust hurt us first of all, with
the idea of them hurting us beforewe kill them. But also it's just
it's it's dumb, like it's justwhat a dumb thing? Is there any
(19:56):
redeeming quality to this, except yousay you did it? I guess would
be my question. I think it'sthat it's like, why would someone wrestle
a bear? You know? Alsokind of dumb? Yeah, although I
feel like the bear would win mostof the time. If a man ever
defeated a bear, though, thenI'm a opposition. No, I'll never
do it again. If a manis stupid enough to wrestle a bear,
(20:18):
then I mean, go for it, knock yourself out. If the man
decides he's going to actually defeat thebear in a fight and like win in
a fight hand to hand combat withit, then I'm out. Man should
not be doing things to animals whoare acting upon instinct. Only I can
tell you this. You can't rollerskate in a buffalo. Heard something you've
(20:40):
tried, it's a song. Oh. Terry goes ahead and finishes his list.
The Macy thinks Saving Day parade, that'd be cool. Yeah, that'd
be a cool one. And thenthe Olympics, specifically track and field competition.
I had the Olympics. I cutthe Olympics, the thing about the
Olympics, and I went with aFIFA World Cup instead, because the World
Cup is just a visceral emotional reactionand everybody's there for the same type of
(21:03):
thing. The Olympics. It's soover arching what I'd love to be at
the Olympics. Absolutely, the Olympicsare a fun thing. I cannot wait
to see the Olympics one day.Certainly going to be on my list of
things that I'd like to do inmy life. The thing that I it's
just which sport, which arena. There's you go to old the water polo
(21:25):
matches. There's certainly not the sametype of passion and visceral reactions that you're
gonna get a you know, say, a FIFA World Cup soccer match,
you know what I mean. Andthat's why I went the other way.
I love the different flavors you canget out of the Olympics. Though.
Don't get me wrong. If Iwent to the Olympics, I'd be there
for like a week and a half. I'd be there as long as I
could, and I'd go to likeevery possible event. What would be your
sport if you had to compete,If I competed, Oh, geez a
(21:48):
team handball, Okay. I feellike if I could learn the rules in
the United States, had a goodteam, which they'd never do, that
seems like it'd be kind of funto play. And I have some of
the records at skills already probably tobe at least kind of good at it.
Not maybe Olympic good, but youknow, good enough. Plenty more
(22:10):
emails coming in on the Friday fouryou can call us with your four events
that you would like to see beforeyou die on your bucket list. You
can call us at four oh two, five five eight eleven ten. Four
oh two, five, five, eight to eleven ten is the number.
And we'll continue this conversation next onnews radio eleven ten KFAB. Emery Songa
on news Radio eleven ten k FAB. Events on your bucket list? Yeah,
(22:38):
and uh, I guess you knowyou're I'm talking not about like seeing
your team do something or climbing themout, and I'm talking about events like
like festivals or things like that, like I had the Kentucky Derby and Wimbledon
and the FIFA World Cup in Octoberfestin Munich, Germany. Those are mine
and we're talking to other people, and our friend Terry emailed me back about
(23:00):
his trip to Pamplona because I wasnot so. I'm not so favorable to
the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. I think it's like the
stupidest thing in the world. Hesaid. Point one, I agree with
you. It's dumb and cruel,he said. Point two. There was
a lot of alcohol involved that Ibelieve, and point three I did see
some people get seriously injured, sothe bulls did have some payback. Well,
I think it's the people who endedup getting the payback. But that's
(23:22):
just me. Todd's on a phoneline four h two five five, eight
eleven ten. Todd, you wantto talk to me about this? Hey,
am, Yeah, I'd like togo about this running up the bulls.
Think there you think that that's unhumaneto the bulls and stuff. But
horse rain scene, is it?Yeah, it's not, it's not.
Todd. I'm glad you brought thisup because this is a great conversation.
(23:44):
So the running of the bulls, the bulls are could we agree on the
point? Even though I don't knowa lot about how they agitate the bull
besides, you know, just wavingstuff at them. That the bulls are
not generally aggressive except when agitated, and they are in intentionally agitated for this
specific event or bullfighting in general.Would you agree with that that's a possibility.
(24:07):
Yes, Okay. Horse racing, that's not necessarily the case. The
people who aren't around the track orhaven't met or a race horse or anything
like that. They are domestic creatures. I mean, these are domestic to
like the ins degree. They enjoyhaving simulation, They enjoy their relationship with
(24:27):
the people that own them, andthey enjoy what they do. They like.
They're a running breed, much likemy greyhounds. My greyhounds actually like
to eat meat, though they willactually chase stuff. A race horse isn't
trying to chase anything. They're justtrying to run away from stuff, generally
when they're not racing. The racingaspect of it, it's quite controversial.
(24:48):
I'm not going to say it's perfect, and there are certainly bad people in
it that have been in trouble forputting, you know, steroids or some
sort of enhancers to the horses totry to make them run faster. There
have been a lot of people thatdon't care about the horse once they're done
running. That's gotten a lot betterin the country. There are a lot
of adoption agencies that help race horsesthat don't have a second career as like
(25:08):
a stud or a mayor to makebabies. But a lot of horses once
they're done running these days do landin safe spots and have the ability to
be trail horses or pet horses thatpeople can just own the act of the
actual race. You know, everybodywants to talk about the whip or what
the jockey's doing on top of thehorse. It's all corrective in trained,
(25:33):
and I can't say every time becauseagain there are people out there that try
to take it, you know, liberties with the rules, but there are
rules in place for excessive whipping. And the whips themselves are designed that they
are going to get the horses attention, but they won't leave marks, they
won't leave whelps, and they aren'tgoing to injure the horse itself. So
the sport in and of itself iswithin the realm of what the horse already
(25:56):
wants to do, and that isrun and be trained. And have that
interactivity with other horses and with people. But at the same time, there
isn't that torturous death thing that isjust an automatic, absolute going to happen
like it is with the running ofthe bulls or with bull fighting in general.
Does that make sense, Well,I agree with the last statement that
(26:17):
you've made, But have you everheard of lace dance or yeah LA six?
Yeah, like what you said,Yeah, yeah, they to make
them run. Yeah, So LAsix isn't necessarily a juice, but it
like it helps the horse not feelpain, so it runs beyond its bodies
ability. And sometimes that is adetriment because it will run too hard and
(26:41):
it will rupture something, or itwill break something, or it will start
bleeding from its lungs from running toohard, something that you know, my
wife said happens to her when sheworks out too hard. Sometimes it's not
pleasant and they're trying to slowly workthat out. Of North American racing,
it's not legal in international racing. So if you went to England embedded on
horse racing, they don't have stufflike that over there. They also don't
(27:03):
race on dirt. They only raceon grass and they almost never have fatalities
for the horses, which is alsosomething I think this country is trying to
work towards in some way. Soyou're right. I'm not trying to argue
with it. No, but it'sa great question, Todd. It's a
great question, absolutely. And peoplecome up to me about my greyhounds,
right because they were race dogs, all three of them were, And they
(27:25):
asked me about that, and theysay, wow, did you rescue them?
And I say, no, Ididn't. They're retired racing greyhounds.
They retired from a job that theyreally enjoyed. And I have one that
didn't like it. He retired ateighteen months, never ran a race,
never was forced to. He's ahappy, go lucky, healthy dog.
I can't speak on what the industrywould have been thirty years ago, and
I know it has a lot ofbad publicity, but as it stands at
(27:48):
right now, they are treated verywell on the track, they are treated
very well in retirement. And Itry my best to try to educate people
because there's just so much bad informationout there. Whereas the running of the
bulls, we just agitated a bunchof bulls, let them chase us,
and then we kill them. Atthe end of the track that they run
on. Okay, you know,I don't know you too, man,
(28:11):
I just a apples and oranges tome. But it's a good question because
I think if you aren't into ratehorse racing, you don't know much about
it, or you don't know dogracing or anything like that. Not to
say that one of the time it'slike that, but generally it's a way
way, way more regulated and humaneway to interact with people and animals at
(28:37):
the same time, versus what theydo to those bulls in Pamplona. All
right, back to the point athand. We are going to get to
more Friday for stuff, your eventsthat you want to be a part of
or you want to see before youdie. Your bucket list. Got a
bunch of emails coming in. Emerieat KFAP dot com. Got some calls
coming in four two, five, five, eight eleven ten, four oh
two five five, eight eleven ten. We roll on on news radio eleven
(28:59):
ten k E Ry's songer on newsradio eleven ten, KFAB Doug's on our
phone line. Doug, thanks forthe call today. What's on your mind?
Yeah, Hey, I was justgetting hold of on the on the
horse races and my well, I'llgive me my favorite four first, okay
three and Dosa downs there, Appleis the quarter for quarter horse maturity and
(29:22):
Rosweldon excuse me, that's in NewMexico. And then the Blue Fiesta they're
in the New Mexico also in Albuquerque, and then a Sturgis and Daytona.
And then I wanted to tell youabout the Fauner Park over here in Grand
Isle, and I'm out of Hastings. Every time I've went there, I
see horses go down with broken legsalmost every race. Yeah, well that
(29:45):
that is the worst obviously the worstpart of of what happens at in horse
racing in general, and it's mostlya North American problem. I think a
lot of it is is the waythey have them horses up, you know.
And I've been around horses most ofmy whole life, and I know
(30:07):
what they what they do to,you know, cour horses, to prepare
them for races, what they feedthem, you know, so they get
them to go, and then theyjust you know, when they go,
one goes down, they delay therace and the next thing you know,
they're out there getting the horse offthe track, and you know, what
they do to them after that.Right. Well, again, I don't
want to speak in too many generalitiesbecause I know a lot of people in
(30:29):
the industry. I did a lotof work at prairie meadows in Altoona and
Central Iowa, and I only hadgood experiences. I did see, unfortunately,
one or two times in the timesthat I've been there, a horse
get injured and be okay eventually.I've also seen a horse get injured and
not make it. It's never fun. It's never easy to either bear witness
(30:51):
to or and you wonder why wekeep doing this. It's uncomfortable obviously to
talk about this, But it's strangebecause we run on They run horses on
grass for all their big races inEurope, and they don't have the same
problems now. And they also don'tthey don't use the same type of medications
that we do in North America, and the horses don't run as hard or
(31:14):
as fast. They are way moretactical. It's all more. It's very
strategic, and they can run furtherdistances and not have to feel like their
horse is going to break down oranything. So I feel like North American
racing is kind of trying to learnas much as they can to avoid those
bad things from happening, because therecertainly have been things that you just it's
hard to explain to people who don'tfollow the sport that that's just something that
(31:37):
unfortunately is part of it. Andat the same time, I will say
that I most almost every person I'vemet in this in the industry, cares
about the horse more than they careabout themselves. They're there at four o'clock
in the morning every day to feedthe horse, take care of the horse,
turn the horse out, walk thehorse around, give the horse exercise,
(31:57):
give the horse stimulus to you know, keep it happy and healthy.
And then when when it's race time, the horse, the good ones especially,
they know it's race day. Imean, my my, I have
one dog. The dogs are similarto the horses in a lot of ways.
You can tell. Whenever that gateopens in the back of my house.
I opened my back door, hethinks it's the gate to go racing.
(32:20):
I mean, he just can't doanything other than just one as fast
as he can, or chase somethingwhen he gets out there. So I
I hear what you're saying, andI think it's an important part of that
sport in the industry that we haveto talk about at the same time,
those are accidents, nobody's intention.I kind of think there's a lot of
(32:42):
that behind there is there's also themoney involved in it, because they're raising
these horses for a reason, andit's not only you know, to the
to the effect that you know, just to win the race. There's money
to be made well obviously, yeah, I mean, and and that the
people that work at the track, whether they're the jockeys or the exercise workers,
or the groomers or the trainers, all those people their job is at
(33:02):
the track. So if their horsesaren't winning, then they have no jobs
exactly right, exactly right, andthat would be the reason why some guys
try to cheat, or some trainershave been in trouble breaking the rules in
some way, whether it's what they'regiving their horses, or what they find
in their barns, or the waythat they're treating a horse. But I'd
(33:24):
like to think that we're getting bettereach and every year in the way that
we're legislating some of that with ourracing officials around the country and hopefully getting
more to that European style where it'snot going to be nearly as dangerous and
it's also going to be a lothealthier for these horses that, let's be
honest, love to run. Theythoroughbred is a running breed, just like
the greyhound is a running breed, and they love the running aspect. They'd
(33:46):
be running by themselves in an openfield if all they had was that,
But they need the people to takecare of them as well. But yeah,
it's an interesting conversation, Doug, and I'm glad you brought it up
with us today. I appreciate it. Thank you, have a good one.
Yep, you too. Let's getback to the Friday four s.
Gary's on our phone line of fourto two, five, five, eight
eleven ten, Gary, thank youfor calling in. What's on your mind?
(34:08):
All right? Well, the Fridayfour for me one of them you
haven't heard of. First off,it's going to be a Super Bowl obviously,
I don't care what location, Okay, And then the Kentucky Derby,
and then uh oh, come on, Hansome think of it. Uh oh,
Mordi gras, oh yeah. Andthen the last one is Red Next
(34:31):
with Paychecks takes place down in Texas. Red Next for paychecks, Gary Red
next for paychecks. This is uhwhat goes on there? Like what do
they do? All right, Well, the title kind of says it,
but you got a whole bunch ofpeople down there. They've got their like
their monster trucks, okay, andthey go through these huge mud holes.
(34:53):
People from Canada come down to dothis, and they've got a bunch of
different bunch different competitions they do.But the most fun one is the Barbie
Car race. Oh I've seen this. I've seen the video of this.
Yes, yes, it is funny. Yeah, now that I could watch
(35:15):
those videos for hours. I couldwatch them for hours. I mean,
it's just it's hilarious. Yes,I'm too old. I'm too old to
break bones anymore. Yeah, you'renot going to get into Barbie Car.
But you'll watch it, is whatyou're saying. That is right. I
will watch. I will laugh whenthey crash. All right, sounds sounds
sounds good. All right, Hey, Rednecks with paychecks. That's funny.
(35:36):
Appreciate that. Gary, Thanks forcalling and being part of the show.
Day. All right, let's goto Trialfaz Trial Faz. Welcome back to
the show. What's on your mind? Hey, Happy Friday there. Hey,
I'm a sports guy too. Ithink it would be really cool to
attend in person a Summer Olympics somewherecool. Yeah, you know, maybe
(35:58):
not in France. Is there Olympics? What I heard that they have a
real bad rat problem in France,so they're trying to combat that before the
Olympics. Winter Olympics would be awesome. Is there an event that trial faz
that you would like specifically want togo watch in the summer Olympics. I
(36:20):
think that questrian and stuff would becool. Uh and some swimming winter I
love the uh all the sliding eventsand stuff like that. At hockey,
it would be it would be fun. Uh st I used to motorcycle,
but I don't have a Hartley.But I think it would be a gas
to check out Sturgis, even thoughit's got to be pretty insane. Yeah.
(36:44):
And and also there's a I sawI think it's on sixty minutes of
this Isle of man uh Tourist Trophyof the Isle of Man t t it's
the Dead Lace motorcycle race. It'skind of like a Laments before racing horse
orry or Yeah, I've seen I'veseen stories on this yeah, it's pretty
crazy. That would be cool.So those are my four. But yeah,
(37:07):
I'm right up there with you onOctober Fest. Beer is near and
dear to me, so yeah, for sure, all right, child fas
appreciate that one. Yep, havea great Friday. Thanks. You want
to talk up to us, youcan four two, five, five,
eight, eleven ten. You're Friday. Four of your favorite events that you
would like to see before you die. They have to be regularly occurring events.
(37:28):
Well, take your calls, getto these emails. Next on news
radio eleven ten. Kfab Emery Songaon news Radio eleven ten. Ok,
Fab, let's go to Matt.Matt's on the line. Matt, thanks
for the call. What's on yourmind? Hey, Yeah, Kentucky Derby's
got to be right up there. The US Open golf and the Masters and
(37:52):
a super Bowl. Okay, yeah, great, great for the Raiders.
But I mean if not any superBowl start sounds good, Matt. And
that's a great list, nice andeclectic. I too, am very sports
centric on mine. There's just toomany to list. But I'm with you
on the Kentucky Derby for sure.Appreciate you calling in. Yeah, let's
(38:13):
go to James James on phone linefour two five five eight eleven ten.
James, what do you got?Oh? Some of my picks would be
the idea on the Alaska the dogright. Oh yeah. Also Indianapolis Snivendred.
That's a good one, including uh, you know some of the festivities
(38:36):
ahead of time as you get readyfor sure. Also I had it here
a minute ago. But you thinkthis was very strange. I used to
live in England and one of theplaces that we enjoyed having was the Essex
County Fair. Oh, Essex CountyFair. I haven't heard that one before,
would you people? Yeah, wouldyou suggest going there? Yeah,
(39:00):
we were there a couple of times, and uh it was uh it was
a lot like a county fair here, and you know the livestock and the
garden supplies and all that sort ofthing, and uh, it's just pretty
well organized. And uh that's theone thing I would not bothered because we
could have gone to see the runningof the bulls when I was there.
(39:23):
But it's just that we used toraise livestock and we had it wasn't a
novelty to have running in the bullhappening. Only one thing we could do
that those people couldn't do was usehand signals because the blood cattle that a
little respect, and you don't tryto scare them to death, and they'll
(39:45):
do a lot of things just bywaving your hand around. All right,
well, I James, that's avery interesting deal man. Appreciate you for
calling in a very eclectic list forus today. Thank you. Good.
Yeah, a good one. Geeis I thought he died in there almost
the almost hacked up a lung onness. It sounded like as a solid hack.
(40:09):
That was a productive cough. Youknow, if you got a cough,
make it productive, That's what Isay. Yeah, we got a
lot of emails coming in, man, there is a lot we have.
Peter, I'll skip Peter. I'llget to him in a second. Dick
says, the testicle Festival at theRound the Ben Steakhouse in South Bend.
(40:30):
Oh he does, huh, SaturdayJune fifteenth. Interested, No, Dick,
I'm not interested. Glad that wewere able to cover that one.
Skip says, space launched to theMoon. Uh, it's not regularly occurring
(40:51):
or predictable. I'm not sure aboutthat. The Trump inauguration, Now,
if you said presidential inauguration, theni'd count that, But the inauguration for
any single president, that doesn't countbecause it's the qualifier. It's like saying
I'll only go to the super Bowl. I want to go to super Bowl
only if my team's playing. That'snot what this exercises. The exercise is
(41:15):
what events do you want to belike? The inauguration is a legitimate one.
Every four years, we can predictthat there's going to be a presidential
inauguration, and a lot of peoplewant to be there for the history of
it. And that's fine, andit's a great sight. I mean,
think about it, but you can'tjust be like one guy, even if
that's the guy that you want tobe. Therefore, Roswell, I'm guessing
(41:36):
he wants to go hang out withyou for the UFOs, Yeah, let's
do it. And then the Masters, which again that absolutely has to be
on if you're a sports fan ora fan of nature. That's just an
event that's so unique. Lowell says. Both the Roswell Festival and Balloon Festival
are great, but my four arethe Kentucky Derby, Octoberfest, Carnival,
(41:59):
and and the Salmon Runs in Alaska. That's an interesting one. Skip skip
sent in another one. He alsohe adjusted space launching the moon and Trump
inauguration are still on there but now, says CWS, which is here in
the Daytona five hundred, those boththose both would count. You got a
(42:21):
problem over there? Oh, haven'tbeen to the Salmon runs, had him
though? Moving along, just alittle joke for your Friday. I don't
know, I don't, I don'tknow, co says. The US Tennis
opened over in New York Arthur AshCourt. It's Arthur Ash Arena or whatever
(42:43):
they call it, Wimbledon. Muchlike tennis, he also game for baseball
cool and before it got stupid. The Grammys. I mean, technically you
could say all awards shows have alwaysbeen pretty cringey or stupid. I don't,
I don't want to. Oh,just one of those things you just
(43:05):
never know with some people, right. Sometimes sometimes you think you know,
but you don't. These are thekind of things that'll tell you something about
a person like Matt. Matt wantsto go to the Testicle Festival. No,
Matt as the Salmon Runs. Ido, but I would like to
go through the lot Toe Matina Festivalto get the throwing of the tomatoes pelted
(43:30):
with tomatoes. Yeah, take oneoff the temple. What a weird guy.
This is right, and it's justa weird guy. Open my mouth,
get a little snack. That's weird. Four two five, five eight
eleven ten. If you've got someevents you'd like to share with us,
four oh two five five, eightto eleven ten. More coming up next
