(00:00):
The cicadas. They're coming. Ohno, that's in Saint Louis. Saint
Louis, like eastern Missouri is inthe spot where is one of the spots
that the two emerging broods that onlysee each other every few hundred years.
It's the seventeen years and thirteen yearcicada and they and there are spots where
they are underground and now emerging forthe first time in that long But those
(00:24):
two broods are emerging at the sametime. Nightmare stuff. If you're not
a big fan of cicadas, ifyou're a bug guy, it's awesome.
I'm not. It's a little creepy, but I'm kind of fascinated by it.
It's there's millions of them there, like in just one in one thing
like millions. And you might beunder exaggerating that. Oh there's a quadzillion
(00:46):
the first square inch as gross. You're gonna see a lot of those guys
if you're in that neck of thewoods. We might see some over here,
but nothing like what they'll see inIllinois and eastern Missouri. Five ten.
Okay, So Emory Ceier Scott's here. We are doing Friday four.
Friday four this week is your fourfavorite things of the past that have been
(01:06):
lost to time that you miss themost. For instance, my four were
riding horses to get from point Ato point B, kids playing baseball every
day during the summer. Big eightieshair and videotape rental stores where you can
go rent VHS tapes or even DVDsor some video games and have some fun
picking those out for the weekend.Your phone number is four h two five,
(01:27):
five, eight to eleven ten.If you want to take part in
this, we'll get Scott's Friday fourin a bit, but let's start with
Kitty Kitty, Thanks for calling in. What's your Friday for today? Oh?
I have so many. I grewup in Omaha, and I'm a
little bit older, and I haveto tell you I hate the laws that
taking our freedoms away from us.Riding in the back of a pickup truck.
(01:47):
Ooh, oh, my goodness, the best thing in the world a
growing up. I grew up acrossthe street from a park. I'm the
youngest of five kids that I hada sisters that were ten and eight years
older than me, and then brothersthat were four and two years older than
me. So I'm a tomboy. We played baseball, we played snow football.
We had a heel in the parkwhere we could slid. We had
(02:09):
a nine hole golf course and apond where we used to die for the
golf balls and sell them back tothe golf local swimming pool where we got
to swim on a team, andyou know, it was just awesome.
The yearly parade, July fourth parade, the horses would be in the park.
(02:31):
I used to be able. Iwas allowed to get up on them
horseback, bareback and take care ofhorses in the park when I was young,
and it was just and the AlfalfasMount. Well. I love the
smell of grasp being molded in thepark though. Yeah, I did the
(02:52):
drag racing too, and all thatkind of stuff, and you know,
hooping up your mom's engine. Sure. I appreciate the call of Kiddy.
That's like a Friday twelve. Appreciateyou for reading on the show. Today.
Let's go to Debbie. Debbie, appreciate you for being on hold with
us, and thanks so much forcalling in. What's on your mind?
Good afternoon. I'm a little probablyolder than she is, but I'm from
(03:13):
Central Nebraska, Kutcher County, andthings are just so much simpler than it's
so fast by living up the troublesof Grand Island now and it's and still
go, you know, from foodtrucks through instant food and all things like
that. I missed, just layingback and getting a tune of those sandwich
and putting it in a wiverer bathand sitting out in park and all kinds
(03:37):
of things. I could let her. I'll take some of the hers and
Adam to mind, if that's okay. Yeah, No, Debbie, that's
awesome, And I appreciate you callingin and thanks so much for sharing your
story with us today. We reallyappreciate that. Let's go to Mary Mary's
on our line of four h two, five, five, eight to eleven
ten. Hello Mary, what's onyour Friday? Foya there trouble hey?
Actually, my favorite was roller skating, especially when they came out with Thriller
(04:00):
and then they mixed it in withbreak dancing at the roller rink. It's
quite sankabulous. But also the planetariumsat unl because I grew up in Lincoln.
They had light shows and they didlike Pink Floyd and led Zeppelin and
I'd never heard them before. Ohyeah. But also Mario came out at
(04:21):
a place that I went to atEast Park. It was called Slugos and
Pinball. But the best part wascliff notes that I actually realized were out
in the world. Yeah, okay, So I will tell you this,
Mary, Everything that you said justsounds kind of like a dream of like
ten years before I was born,Like all that stuff I grew up in
(04:46):
that era. Yeah, but that'sthe thing, like I could totally see
myself doing all of that if Iwas just born ten years earlier, because
that's just like every single thing therejust sounds like a good time, you
know what I mean. Planetarium isstill there at Uno. Oh nice,
there you go. So if theyare, I'll have to go back over.
I'm I'm no longer in Lincoln, but yeah, I know. Uh
(05:08):
jim went to Southeast correct, Yeah, I went, Oh cool, I
don't know where that is. Iknow. Uh. Well, Mary,
I appreciate you calling in and beinga part of our show today. I
love the list and thanks so muchfor listening to us. Uh. Jimmy's
on the line. Hello, Jimmy, where what's on your mind today?
(05:30):
I'm Jimmy. I'm from New Yorkand Connecticut. There to call me Jimmy
Bars. I'm living in Lincoln rightnow. Okay, anyways, Yeah,
it caught my memory. I wasa little tried, and that's like one
of the first things I thought about. I'm know the previous cars's something about
sledding, but I think she wastalking with a versus. But I mean
(05:50):
like sledding downhills as a child,or your pants, your your your bottom
of your jeans with three sides, but you didn't feel it. I can't
even watch to my house to mycar without ceiling cold. But I don't
know how we did that gun forhours and hours. I used to I
used to love the Friday night dancesat the YNCA. You know it's a
kid. Yeah, yeah, Idon't know if they do those anymore.
(06:12):
I don't think they do those. It's been a while now. Yeah,
And but I really loved as mydad, we we owned a we owned
a property that was close to likethe dunes as you will of a river
bed, you know, with theminute with the mini bikes and the motorcycles,
and they're broke half the time, but facing them half the fun and
uh, you know what I reallyliked too, was like sneaking out.
(06:34):
Man at that age, Oh yeah, I think you get away with it.
Well, now it's now like thateverybody's got their houses unsurveillance, so
the parents could see their kids tryingto sneak out of the house. It's
just sneaking out, like you know, go over to our front or even
staying at you know. But thosetimes I really miss I kind of just
kind of love the outdoors more thanI do today because I can't really enjoy
(06:59):
it as much, you know,So I missed the freedom of being young,
being in care free you know.Yeah, for sure those things I
do this and then then life happens, you know. But yeah it's okay,
you know, you know, Andthat's what nostalgia is, you know,
Jimmy. We can just use ourmemories and think about all the cool
things that were. And I appreciateyou for calling in and sharing your list
with us. Today. Rich ison the line. Hello, Rich,
(07:21):
Welcome to the show. What's onyour mind? Hey, Emory, I
know you're quite a bit younger,and I am. I was born back
in the fifties, early fifties, and you know, but I grew up
in the sixties. Anybody that canrelate to the sixties, to me,
it was the great greatest decade ofmany things. Music, cars, I
(07:45):
mean, that's when the power carscame out. Yeah, you had the
Mustangs, you had the Camaros, you had the road Runners, you had
the art so rich rich. Whatyou're saying is, if you could have
your way, you'd bring back reallythe craftsmanship, the look in, the
real meat and muscle of those carsand bring them back into twenty twenty four
and have people start making some ofthose things. You know, yes,
(08:07):
and you know everybody was so proudof their car, and they'd build it
up and you had them, youknow, all your windows smeared up with
hooker headers, the stickers of whatyou had in that car. Yeah,
for sure, from exhaust to youknow, and all that stuff. But
you know, also back then youhad the greatest music. You had the
(08:28):
British invasion that hit the US.Yeah, you know, the Beatles,
the Herman Hermits. You had thegreatest music. And then of course you
throw the Vietnam War in there, and I brought in the hippies and marijuana
and it was just don't forget LSD. They're rich, Like, let's knock
(08:48):
them all out. What's that?Don't forget LSD. Let's knock all those
out. Hey, I don't wantto get too far out there, but
you know, it was an erathat was the most my gosh, every
time he turned around there was somethingnew, and it was so exciting as
a kid, you know, andI didn't go to high school until literally
(09:11):
seventies, but oh, my gosh, just to sit on the streets and
watch the parade of cars and yeah, you know the must those were muscle
cars. These kids nowadays put thishot ride muffler on a four cylinder vehicle.
Yeah, that sounds like a pieceof junk going down the road.
(09:31):
Yeah. No, you you neededto be back then, and you really
found out what well muscle carsund.Right, Rich, this is a great
list. I'll note that Rich wantsto bring the entire sixties back, and
I'll put put that on the line. I appreciate you calling in man,
Scott boy, he's sitting alongside,Hey, so you get the premise.
Yeah, what do you got forme? Skating rinks? We used to
(09:52):
have skating rinks all over town, like like the indoor ones. Yeah,
schools would have a couple of nightsa year where they would skate, which
then meant at some point you haveto couple skate with someone, you know,
adding that little element to it.We don't have. We've got the
Hope Center skating rink, man,I think that is probably it here for
the Allaha metrics. You can skateover at in the Lahy Mall, the
(10:16):
park next to there, they havea skating rink. But I missed the
skate Land or skate Days or whateverit is that was around when Yeah,
if it's raining, you're not goingover there to skate. No, those
those were special times. I missco workers. Oh boy, this is
this is going to hit home fora lot of us. Yeah, the
the end of the day on aFriday, here at the radio station,
with all these radio stations each witha bunch of people working there. We
(10:39):
still have some people obviously working here, not as many as before. With
a lot of industries they're having thatproblem as well. And uh, you
know, everyone's like love. Somepeople are working from home. And it
used to be more of a partyin here. We were all in here
smoking on. I'm kidding, no, I just I just I miss co
workers and all of that. Imiss ignorance because well, we still have
(11:01):
plenty of it, but the ignoranceof facts. Having an entire world of
facts at your disposal on your phonesettles a lot of debates too quickly.
I like two people arguing something thatcould be easily proven if they only had
access to the information. My sisterwas once dating a guy years ago who
(11:22):
said, you know the unibomber. What's his name? I said, Ted
Kazinski. He goes, no,we didn't have phones. Sure, so
we this was on a forty fiveminute drive or we're yelling. I was
like, Ted Kazinski, it's notit, it is it the guy,
the letters he wrote to university orthe bombs. Yeah, it was harder
to be good at trivia back inthe day. Yeah, So I missed
(11:45):
that kind of ignorance. And thenumber one thing I really miss is kids
who Yeah there were always punk kidsand all that, but everywhere I go
there's just punk kids just swearing aroundfamilies. You're out with your family,
you're out with your wife, you'reout with your kids, and there's just
a rogue bunch of middle schoolers orwhatever just cussing loudly all over the place,
(12:07):
And I'm like, do I haveto get in a fight with an
eighth grader right now? Because nowhe's cussing to me? And I used
to be that we'd be punk kids. We'd never dream to, you know,
have such horrible, filthy language aroundadults, and now it's so commonplace.
You want you want your punk kidsto be a little bit more,
uh, just a little bit ofaol Like, Hey, missed you know
(12:30):
up your notes of the rebbe hoose, you know that kind of thing.
I show my thumb atuse site.Fucked in your general donation, you know.
Now it's just a headstick. Imissed that. Now it's just cursing
kids everywhere. Wow, I didn'tknow that was such an epidemic. Yeah.
Man, Well, I uh,I'm a kind of a potty mouth
myself, so I don't have alot of rim to talk. But five
(12:54):
twenty nine is the time. Ifyou have a Friday four we'd love to
hear from you. Four h twofive, five, eight eleven ten.
We'll keep having fun as we winddown the show for it coming up,
and give away a pair of ticketsto Junkstock. Stick around for that too.
On news radio eleven ten kfab andvery songer couldn't help but notice some
of the things that are happening hereon my email, And it was in
relation to the Friday for which isbasically the stuff that you miss from yesteryear
(13:20):
that just kind of either phased outor we didn't need anymore, or we
don't need to do anymore. AndCurtis emailed in and said, my gut
reactions. I did this as fastas I could, which is the way
you should be doing this. Idon't need a lot of thought for this
stuff. But mixtapes and CDs,that was one that Matt had, you
know, like just putting real thoughtinto how to organize a good mixtape.
(13:41):
Friday Night videos. I still havesome VHS tapes of those Friday Night videos
static on your solid state TV whena storm rolled in, like if you
like had the antenna or something,or maybe satellite. And then he said,
roller skating ranks, this smell likepopcorn and cheap perfume. I mean
that I can hear and see anepisode of Saved by the Bell in that
(14:03):
one. I think that's a goodone. Travis said, I came across
this gym, this morning, andit's like, I thought this was funny
because I said, big eighties hair, and he said, why did so
many moms in the eighties low keyof the same haircut as Mel Gibson.
And it's a picture of Mel withimmaculate eighties hair. Immaculate hair. Love
(14:26):
it. Douglas says, station wagons, home phones only, no cell phones.
I think it goes back to whatMatt was saying is that you didn't
always, you know, have connectionto the outside world. You kind of
had to like plan or prepare orthere was like moments you were just kind
of off the grid as far asanyone was concerned. Number three for him
(14:48):
was family sit down dinners. Howmany people are doing those these days?
Do you? We do? Oh? Yeah, if it's only a couple
days a week. It's only acouple days a week. We try and
do at least three, which iseveryone's so busy in our family. But
when when we get a chance,we'll sit down and we'll have dinner together.
How does that go? Last?About ten minutes? And then my
(15:11):
kids start giggling uncontrollably at I don'tknow what right. They talk their own
language at this point probably, Andthen I start laughing, and my wife
looks at us like we're crazy. It's fun. We have some nice dinners.
I hate to be personal and intrude, but please, do your kids
find you to be cool or arethey? Are? They kind of like
(15:33):
rebellious against like you. You suggestsomething and you'll they'll never agree with you.
I've gotten to the point. I'vegot two teenage kids, and I've
gotten to the point that every oncein a while I can genuinely make one
of them laugh. And that's myfavorite sound in the world. Now.
Yeah, my mom sometimes tries tomake me laugh. Still, there's a
difference between your kids laughing at you, which I hear a lot, sure,
(15:56):
and and then them actually laughing atsomething you said that genuinely made them.
Last you were trying to make themlaugh, Yeah, and it worked.
Yeah. I'm thirty three years oldand I still, to this day
do not want to let my parentsmake me laugh like I I try to
poker face every because it's it's weird. I don't want to give them the
satisfaction that they got to me.You know what I mean. I'm the
(16:19):
angsty, rebellious black sheep kid.You know what I mean? I see
that about you. Yeah, that'smy life. Douglas finishes up and says,
original Nintendo graphics, Oh yeah, thirty two bit Yeah why though,
he says, for the nostalgia,And I get that, but it's like
you can barely see what's going on. Oh you can see just fine.
(16:40):
I've saved many a princess and savedHigh Rule. I think it's the name
of the legend of Zelda Land.Yeap, Yeah, never beat. Mike
Tyson took the Los Angeles Raiders tothe Super Bowl, Techmo Bowl several times.
Bo Jackson and Marcus Allen, Ijust it's it speaks to me,
Uh yeah, sure. I don'tneed every video game graphic to be a
(17:03):
gun being held out from my pointof view, like so many of these
games. Well, and we've goneso far to the point that it's barely
even playing video games at this point, Like it feels almost real because they
do such a great job with thegraphics and it's really impressive. And I'm
not saying that it's not just getme to like PS one, give me
to like GAMEQ, give me tolike just to that general just Sega Dreamcast
(17:25):
like that generation in the late nineties, I'm good with that. Anytime you
want to come over and play theoriginal Nintendo I've got it. I'm going
to be awful at it. Butso many games. Oh. Let me
tell you. My son has gota tecmobile app on his smartphone and I
was looking at us, like, what are you doing. Yeah, it's
called retro Bowl. Yeah, andhe plays it on there and he's great
(17:45):
at it and retro bul is fire. And I told him, I said,
that's a Nintendo game downstairs. He'slike, I would cook you at
that. I said, let's gopick any team you want, Pick any
team you want. He's Raider, you can tell. I said, that's
fine because he knew that Bo Jacksonwas the best. I said, fine,
you want to be the Raiders,be the Raiders. You can pick
which team you want me to be. I smoked him seventy seven to nothing.
(18:07):
A dirty He didn't like end thegame. He didn't. He didn't
like go down three touchdowns and thenjust like restart the game. So satisfying.
Ah Man, Yeah, he didn'tknow what he was getting into there.
I will say this though, asfar as Retro Bull is concerned,
they have a college version. Haveyou seen that so there's a retro bowl
on your phone. It's very similarto Techmobile and the pro version is fine
(18:32):
and it's very reminiscent and I've killeda ton of hours doing that. But
also retro buwl College. You canrecruit in that game. Oh it's fine,
really fine. That's not retro. That's now you got NIL offers that
you can do. No, Idon't, but again, you know,
not everything's perfect. Although they didrelease the UH cover of the new College
(18:52):
Football Game because of NIL that theycan actually release for like consoles now,
and it's coming in the summer,and it's awesome. It's got a lot
of the game of the players thatare coming back that are gonna be awesome
players in college football next year, and they're all walking into the big House
at Michigan who just won the nationalchampionship. It's it's super cool. I
(19:12):
can't wait for that. Add thatto the list of things I miss.
Lack of NIL, Yeah, no, where players were either playing for the
love of the game or getting underthe table buyouts from boosters. You're like,
that guy shouldn't be going to SMUgood old day, and then you
find out that he's driving in agold grand Am or something. He's like,
oh, I get it now.Doug emailed in and said, first
(19:33):
midnight showing of new movie releases.Yeah, there are still some of that
going on with that. It's notreally midnight showings now, it's kind of
like they do it on the Thursdayat like seven pm the night before.
That makes me think of another one. What's that camping out to get tickets?
Yeah, yeah, we had towait, literally wait in line.
You couldn't go online and like likereserve your spot. The real fans got
(19:55):
the best seats because you could camp. Yes, they would be out there
for days. Yeah, there's alot of great videos from that and buying
new phones and stuff. People likewhen the iPhone first dropped. I mean
that's not even that long ago,and people would camp out for days trying
to be one of the first peoplein there to get those. He said.
Second, when everything was closed onSunday, why would we miss that
(20:22):
just to quiet things down? Butyou don't have to go if someplace is
open. Yeah, I know, but you might have to work or your
kid might have to work. Ialways yes, I worked at the movie
theater. We were open every singleday, right, we are open on
Christmas. Yeah. And that's theother thing too. Sometimes you just work
at a place that you have tobe operating when everybody else right, yeah,
(20:42):
movie theaters to radio twenty four toseven, yeah, eight twenty four.
But you're losing money if you're notopen right in that spot. Well,
that's what families say. They gettogether for Thanksgiving or something, and
they say it'd be you know,I think everyone should have the day off,
but it'd be nice to go dosomething today. Who's open exactly?
Someone has to work, yeah, exactly. Third one, he put it
(21:03):
was family gatherings because everything was closedon Sundays. Well, that makes sense.
And then he said, fourth, your phones couldn't leave the house.
Right, pre cell phones, everythingwas in the house. A lot of
people are saying that. One.I remember we got our first cordless phone.
I called my buddy and said, let me know when you can't hear
me anymore. I started walking downthe street, like, cordless phone,
(21:25):
how far do you get? Likethree houses down? That's pretty good stuff.
And I thought, like, amI a space man? This is
the greatest technology anyone's ever created.Ah? Yeah, And little did you
know that you would have an entirecomputer in a very small box in your
pocket that you could walk around anywherein the world and have access. It's
a blessing and a curse. Itcan be. And Jim real Quick said,
(21:45):
I'm retired from the military and Imiss working in the camaraderie of my
military friends and family. I missedthe discipline in the regimen. I missed
the patriotism and the spread the coolI think. Sorry, Aye, my
French is a little shaky. Uhyeah, pretty interesting, big fan of
(22:07):
that. Oh, Katrina just realquick last one says road trips, especially
if they had no purpose. Nobodydoes road trips for no purpose anymore.
Maybe some people, but not generally. Uh again, because we have all
this entertainment at our fingertips now thatwe didn't have before. Road trip was
a way of entertainment. She says, cruising on dodge and watching people cruise
dodge trains for people in transportation, and we missed out being here in the
(22:32):
US and in Europe, that's Imean, that's it's more popular than anything
now in Europe. And then dialup internet. We need to slow the
world down. I don't know,I don't know if I could do no
dial up Internet. Absolutely not.I'm glad we got we graduated from now
one. My computer starts to bufferfor five seconds. I lose it.
I'm with you there. Five fortyeight we wrap up the show. Next
(22:52):
News Radio eleventh th in KFA BigWire. Cicada's coming up. By the
way, they come up to layeggs and die. Basically they lay the
eggs. The eggs then fall intothe ground and basically burrow. Do they
hatch and then go underground or dothe eggs go under like the eggs get
dropped to the ground. I can'tremember either way. All these cicadas are
(23:15):
going to die one way or theother. So like the birds and anything
that would eat these kind of bugs, like possums, I mean salivating at
this. This is gonna be ahuge deal. But I was speaking of
birds. I'm telling you, guys, you have done a great job.
So many people have sent me Oriolevideos or Oriole photos of you guys seeing
(23:38):
orioles in the area, and I'mdoing everything I can to try to get
them attracted to my house. Iam upgrading, updating and freshening my jelly.
I am putting new clementines or orangesout there on the feeder, and
for whatever reason, it's just it'snot working out. It is not working
out, and it's a real shamekeep sending them to me, though,
(24:00):
I'm gonna keep trying and hopefully Ican get an oriole in my feeder in
Omaha in my front yard before wemissed the migration season, which is coming
here in the next couple of weeks. But it's frustrating. Other things that
are happening in Omaha. The stormChasers in town over at Winter Park over
the weekend, that's gonna be alot of fun. Go check them out
and support them. They're good sponsorsof this program. Also, guess what
else is happening. Renaissance Fair comingup? Is happening during the month of
(24:23):
May. I think maybe something likethat because my wife just bought a corset.
I guess we're gonna have to goto that whenever it's happening. But
on top of that, SIP Nebraska, which is an awesome event. Cannot
wait to go there this weekend overat what's that park called SIP Nebraska.
It's located at that park in Elkhorn, Tahka. Something like that. SIP
(24:45):
Nebraska. Let me just get thatfor you. It is Mahoney Mahoney State
Park, Ashland. Then you're wellwest of well yeah, yeah, yeah,
so in Ashland it's at Mahoney StatePark. Also, you know what
else is happening this week? Jumpstock? Junkstock is happening. And speaking
of junkstock, everybody loves junkstock.Sycamore Farms. I want to give you
(25:06):
two tickets to go to junkstock rightnow. If you want to go to
junkstock, be the sixty fifth callersixty five sixty five for nineteen sixty five,
which was a year at what happenedin nineteen sixty five? Okay,
maybe that was a bad example, but nineteen sixty five, that's why I
(25:27):
picked it. And I'm sure somethinghappened. Bill Russell and the Boston Celtics
won another NBA championship in nineteen sixtyfive. Good guess Yeah, there you
go, the sixty fifth caller. You're gonna win two tickets to junkstock and
have fun doing that. This weekend. My wife and I were going to
be bounced around to a bunch ofthis stuff. If you see us,
please feel free to say hello. If you go to the Farmers' Market.
You might see us there as well, down there in Zarbon, near where
(25:49):
we live. We're really excited tobe a part of this community every single
event that happens. But the sixtyfifth caller, you are going to have
a shot at a couple of junkstocktickets, So call us now out four
O two five five eight eleven ten. Four oh two five five eight eleven

News Radio eleven ten, Kfab
