(00:00):
What you do is you try tobring these events to us. I do
and that's really cool, and tryto bring even more emotion to you.
And I'm all for it. Now, obviously we have stuff like the College
World Series that's on deck here inthe next month. We have the Big
ten Baseball tournament going on right now. You guys are very busy with a
lot of the other things. Peoplemay not immediately think of that Almaha is
(00:21):
like, oh yeah, oh,I didn't know that was coming to Omaha.
First thing next week, there's thething called the Oscars. Is that
how you say that? That isthe Oscars? What's the Oscars? So
the Oscars is our award show. It's our fundraiser event, but it is
an award show to recognize the significantachievements that we've had in sports around the
community. That covers eight of theawards that are given on that night,
(00:45):
which will be next Thursday, Maythirtieth. But then the pinnacle piece of
it is that we get to inductthe next Omaha Sports Hall of Fame class.
That's awesome and you already know whothose people are, right, Those
are known, those have been knownfor quite some time. The doctor Jack
Lewis Award is the only award thatis known ahead of time. The rest
of the seven form really on anOscar's SB style where I actually don't even
(01:10):
know them, so I like tojoin in the surprise. We won't know
until the awards are happening on nextThursday. You have to be there,
So how does one get there?Right? Is this something that people can
just, you know, try tobuy tickets too. I feel like this
is a little bit more exclusive thanthat they can buy tickets. It is
truly to support the community and thesports that are within the community. So
tickets are on sale still at theOmaha Sports Omaha Sports Commissions website so Omaha
(01:37):
Sports dot org and tickets are eightydollars. So we try to keep it
really affordable, and we also tryto keep it moving quick because we know
sometimes those can be very long, but we try to move ours much faster.
I watched the Oscars this year forthe first time because I for the
first time in a long time,I watched a lot of movies, and
that was my biggest fear, islike I just know this is going to
(01:57):
take five hours. They actually dida really good job. They had a
brand new format, and they justwere running through stuff and they were done
early. They were done like ahalf hours. No, no, it
was like two It was like twohours and fifty minutes or something like that.
And I was like pleasantly surprised.I think that's the future of awards,
right. It is like people wantthe action to keep moving. I
(02:17):
don't need you to tell your lifestory when you go up there and accept
an award. Yep, tell mea good a good story, one really
good story that ke catches me andI'll find you after and I'll talk to
you after. Exactly are you askingme to give you one really good story?
Do you have a really good No? No, I found a couple
of artists snakes in my yard whenI mowld my lawn this afternoon. They're
good to have, I hear.Yes, there you go, there's my
(02:38):
story. Speaking with Lindsay Tussund Brownfrom the Omaha Sports Commission. So this
is happening. People could pay eightydollars to be a part of a very
special night. There's going to bea lot of important dignitaries that are going
to be involved, a lot ofpeople being recognized for their great contributions in
various ways in sports in our community, including a Hall of Fame. It
sounds like something I need to bedressing up for. Yeah, people,
(03:01):
there's red carpet, so be preparedfor red carpet, some photos with backdrops
and all of the good stuff weyou know, and and all of this
goes back to a good cause, right, So the funds come back to
us. And what we do iswe bring sporting events into the community and
we help with certain programming pieces tohelp thrive the community more into sports and
(03:23):
jump into sports. But the economicdevelopment and economic impact that we see from
events coming in and people getting exposedto our community. And you settle down
right, there's a couple of usin here. I don't know, are
you a transplant too, right?Your transplant technically for Omaha. Yeah,
I grew up in York, Nebraska. See. And the more you can
(03:45):
bring these great events, whatever thatmight be, you know, sports,
culture, arts, all of thatgood stuff, that's that's a reason we
move here. And sports is veryimportant in a lot of people's lives.
So I'm always what we do.I'm always preaching about that too, because
you guys do a great job.All the people that are involved in making
sure that we have these great eventsbecause you need the venues, you need
(04:09):
supporters, sponsors. Tried to doeverything that you can to make people aware
of not just these events, butalso the vital importance of being able to
bring this kind of thing. Youknow, coming from the Moines, who
you know, they have their owngroup that tries to do stuff like this.
And you hear how many dollars comein with one of these events.
It's millions of dollars stimulating our economy, not just for the people here that
(04:33):
can enjoy the culture, in thesports and the stuff like that, but
the people that come to see it, or the people that are coming to
support people who are in these events. And you guys are busy doing this
stuff all year long. On anaverage, how many events in a calendar
year are coming to Omaha that aren'tlike generally based in Omaha every year?
(04:53):
Yeah, for us, we probablyhave about fifteen this year. We'll be
knocking on the door of twenty nextyear. Wow. We're starting to do
some of the creating our own eventssort of like this right, this is
the Oscar is a created event byus as a funder user. But some
of the events we we do itthat way. It gives those in the
community and and avenue for participating ina sport right and then brings in outside
(05:18):
people as well. So that's whatwe do. And I see some of
the names of you know, peoplein places and things that are like nominated
for here, like for the StevePovivar or Pivovar sorry pivotvar, sorry transplant
transplant. It's Sports Media Person ofthe Year. And our buddy Terry lah
(05:39):
from iHeartRadio for you and O Hockeyis one of the nominees. How awesome
is that served? And then JordiBall is you know a nominee for Female
Amateur Athlete of the Year, RyanCockbrinner from Creighton Male Amateur Athlete of the
Year nominee. I mean, there'sall sorts of cool stuff that is going
to be nominated here to celebrate theyear that was in sports in Omaha.
(06:00):
And then that doesn't even go intothe Hall of Fame. Yeah, and
our year goes from spring to throughwinter, so that's why we will see
some people with their accomplishments from theirspring season. But because of the timing
of our event and not every sportis completed at this time. So we
go spring through winter and this yearour next year's Hall of Fame or osca's
(06:23):
Awards is going to We've already gotpeople on the list because this spring season
has been wild from the accomplishments ofboth high school and colleges. Sure,
we've had some stillar performances between softball, baseball, check and field. So
we're excited about it. It's goingto be really really cool. Can you
stick around, Yeah, a littlebit longer, Sure, that'd be great.
(06:45):
I promise no more Mobi dick questions. Three, lets you do sound
Brown from the Omaha Sports Commission. She'll be sticking around to talk about another
great event that's coming up in afew weeks here, so stick around for
that. On news radio eleven toten KFAB. Emory's sung on news Radio
eleven ten Kfab. We're joined bymy friend Lindsay Tusson Brown from the Omaha
(07:06):
Sports Commission. We talked about theOscars, which is the Omaha Sports Commission
Awards happening next Thursday. People canbuy tickets online, Yes they can.
There we go and wear nice CLOBs, red carpet style, red carpet style.
Okay, that is not a sportingevent. Necessarily it is a fundraiser
(07:28):
to support the sporting events that weget to bring into the community. And
speaking of sporting events that you arebringing into the community, I see one
is going to be taking place firstweek or so of June at Lake Cunningham
in this area. And this lookslike to be a very good one,
a very good one. It isa national championship for triathlon. So we
are going to see at the beautifulLake Cunningham about fifteen hundred unique athletes come
(07:53):
through in over five days. There'llbe twelve different races. All right,
So I see this and this isyou say triathlon, So this is I
mean, this is a big deal. It is a very big deal.
You were talking earlier about economic impactingthe dollars coming in the Kiini. We
will see just north of about fivemillion dollars impacted into the community through this
(08:15):
event, Jay Whiz. Yeah,we're really excited. Five million dollars is
that'll be great. It's great forthe businesses, it's great for the community.
Yeah, they get to see Omaha. A lot of these people would
never have a reason to see Omaha, correct, and they're going to get
to see it and who doesn't cometo Omaha leave like, you know what,
Omaha is really cool? It isreally cool. I moved here yet,
yeah, I mean okay. Sothe Multi Sport National Championships Festival from
(08:37):
USA Triathlon, Lake Cunningham June fifththrough the ninth. Do you know exactly
what kind of events they're going tobe doing. I mean, I can
triathlon, the swimming, running, and biking, right yep. So there's
all there's multiple variations of those threedisciplines together. So you might get a
run bike run or just a swim, or you will get the swim bike
(09:01):
run, So there's different combinations ofand links of those disciplines within the various
twelve races. I have been toLake Cunningham. This is a place I
have been to in my less thana year of living in Omaha. I've
lived in Omaha now for eight months, which is you know, it's crazy.
I feel like I got here yesterday. But I saw Lake Cunningham and
I was like, Wow, acool place. This's got a paved trail
(09:24):
that's like seven miles long all theway around. Yep. So we will
be doing pretty much outside of thebiking, all of the running and of
course, all of the swimming willhappen within the park, and then we're
trying to be as non intrusive onthe roads as possible because we know that
there are there's a lot of communitymembers who live around that space, so
(09:46):
just trying to make sure that it'sa good fit for everybody who's from the
community and then those coming in.But anybody can really sign up for the
race. In all honesty, there'soptions for more beginner friendly races. So
if somebody has an inkling that theywant to try out a triathlon, you
are more than welcome to sign up. And in volunteering, we need we
(10:07):
need a lot of volunteers. Itis. It is five days of a
lot of work, So if anybodyhas some time to spare, you can
head over to the Omaha Sports Commission'swebsite and jump into volunteer. We're talking
to Lindsay Tusson Brown from the OmahaSports Commission. I want to start first
of all. We'll get to thevolunteering in a second and more detail.
What is like. I'm a runner, you know, I could run probably
(10:28):
a ten k right now, feelingpretty good about that. I know how
to swim. I don't think Idie swimming. Not a good swimmer.
I like to ride bikes. They'rea race for me. There is a
race for you. You want tosign up? I don't know. I
know a person I can get you. Oh, I don't I don't have
a good bike. I don't thinkyou have to bring your own bike,
don't you. Yeah, the bikethe race I would tosh you into.
(10:48):
The bike is only a five kso you gotta just can your bike make
it three miles? I could probably, I could probably borrow a three mile
bike. Yeah, a bike forthree miles. Yeah, yeah, just
take take take a bike from somebody. Yeah, there's some very friendly racism.
Yeah, the three miles of thebikes is nothing. I know.
That takes like fifteen minutes. Yea, not even Yeah, fifteen minutes is
(11:09):
not even trying. Yeah, Ican ride a bike. Geez. Anyway,
No, that's fun. Okay,And then I see there's a there's
a thing literally right there. Volunteerpeople can click on what kind of things
are they volunteering to do? Yeah, we you know, helping get people
checked in, helping with the transitionsarea. So there's an area and when
people are done with one discipline, they got to go to their homestead and
(11:31):
swap out to the next discipline. So just kind of along the course,
making sure that athletes have the waterthey need and aid stations. We've got
parking volunteers. That way, wemove them in smoothly because there's areas for
park and then you you've been therethe camp sites, so we're actually using
one of the campsites as camping,so we have a lot of people were
(11:52):
already full, but people are comingin and camping and making it a full
on festival. I love to hearthis. And this is for a few
days now. I mean we're talkingJune fifth through the ninth, those five
full days of stuff that's happening overthere at Lake Cunningham. And again you
can find all of this at Omahasports dot org. All this stuff very
friendly right on the website, veryeasy to do. Lindsey, it's always
(12:13):
fun talking to you. You alwayshave great stuff to bring in for us.
I know that you're gonna have biggerevents that are you know, big
events that are happening later on inthe year, and I just promised that
you'll come in and talk to usabout those when they get closer. Oh.
Absolutely, we got we got agood one coming for the community.
Hasn't gone public yet, so whenit does, we will share. Ooh
ah, how about that for atease long term teas long you're just gonna
(12:35):
have to listen to every single dayuntil she's back on so like you can
hear her, you know, makethis gigantic announcement of this awesome thing.
But Lindsay really really appreciate you comingin today. It's always fun chat with
you. Thanks for having me.Guys. Yeah, Omaha, sports dot
org go and find it and we'dlove to see you out there volunteering at
LKE Cunningham for the USA Triathlon MultiSport National Championship Festival June fifth through the
(12:58):
ninth. Really cool to see somethinglike that coming to our community. A
bride stunger here with you. MattCase is my producer and we'll head into
the four o'clock hour a couple ofthings. We'll give you an update on
what is happening in the news.Another forgiveness of student loans from the President
that has certainly got people a littlebit more up in arms. We'll see
who qualifies for that. Also,I found like a family of garter snakes
(13:20):
living in my backyard. I almostran over one of them with the lawnmower,
didn't. It's okay your opinion onsnakes in the yard. I actually
kind of like them. If youdon't like them, or you like them,
or you got information about him,you can call in four two five
five eight eleven ten. Four htwo five five eight eleven ten. I'd
love to take your call and talkabout that, plus another thousand dollars keyword
(13:41):
