(00:00):
Kayla Caffey joining us on our phonelines today. Kayla, thanks so much
for being on the show. Thankyou for having me. Okay, so
I'm looking at this Kayla and twentytwenty two National champion with Texas. You
also played a couple of years forthe Cuskers, helped them to the twenty
twenty one national championship match. Youalso played at Missouri, a lot of
(00:23):
big time experience. You're a professionalnow, third year professional, and you've
come back to Nebraska to play withthe Supernovas. So I got to start
with the journey that you've been on, all the different places that you've played.
Can you kind of tell us whatit's like being a professional and a
sport that's really starting to grow herein the United States. Yeah, it's
(00:43):
definitely super exciting and I'm loving it. I think that it's like you said,
like it's a sport that is reallygroundbreaking right now, and all this
wile mention is just rolling right especiallyfrom the Nebraska bollyball day that they had.
I'd like that built a lot ofexcitement and it's just really cool to
be this culture in this environment rightnow for the sport of volleyball. So
you spend some time with the Huskersand have obviously had a ton of success
(01:07):
some of the biggest volleyball programs, and now as a professional, what kind
of attracted you to come to Omahaand be a part of the Supernovas.
Yeah, so on doing first wehad that was our first day that we
could be picked up or recruited byanyone, if you want to use those
terms. And Omaha Supernovas was thevery first team that reached out and contacted
me. And so from day one, I knew they wanted you to be
(01:27):
a part of their team. Andjust to feel like embraced and feel wanted
is just as a great feeling alwaysAnd I was super excited because I know
that the fans and a brass arejust amazing. So it was an old
brainer, especially after talking to thecoach and just seeing like how they performed
last year. I just see apart of this culture. Yeah, there's
no doubt we're speaking with Kayla Caffey, former Husker volleyball player but also now
(01:51):
a brand new member of the OmahaSupernovas. You played in this league last
year. I have to ask forsomebody you know you've played also internationally,
what is it. What was thevibe from where you were at in it
with Grand Rapids last year and kindof how this league was organized compared to
some of the international leagues. Yeah, I mean it was great. I
(02:12):
think that it's really cool to justbe at home. I think a big
difference from playing international and home. It's just the community rally around you.
I mean, it's no better sailingfeeling that playing in front of your friends
and family. And one in GrandRapids, I was really close to Chicago.
It was an hour and a halfmaybe forty five away, so my
friends and family were able to comedown all the time. I was able
to see them, and I thinkthat's really the largest difference. And then
(02:35):
also like here, obviously I'm carryingover fan braise from playing at University of
Nebraska, where as overseas those peopledon't know you as well. So just
com city is really important. Yeah, really awesome. You mentioned Chicago and
that's where you're from and kind ofwhere all this journey started. Can you
hit me through your volleyball journey beforeyou even got to college and how you
were interested in this sport and howyou were able to find your way to
(02:58):
places like Missouri Nebraska Tech is andnow into the pros. Yeah, so
resonly actually a profession not professional allstar cheerleader. I had like competitive cheer
did all that, and I waslooking for something that was more exciting.
I was like, this isn't asfun, Like we practice all these hours
to perform for maybe a minute anda half two minutes, And so my
mom put me in volleyball. Istarted when I was twelve and ever since
(03:21):
I've just loved it. I playedfor Mutio Chicago, that's a volleyball club.
I played for it I ever GreenPark, and yeah, I just
loved it. I just thanks tosomething indiger no doubt about that. We're
speaking with Kayla Caffey, who isthe newest, one of the newest members
of the Omaha Supernovas. You're notthe only Husker that was brought in for
(03:43):
the Supernova team, and you're goingto be playing middle blocker. You know,
you're somebody that's going to be ableto, you know, score some
points and get some kills, butalso you're going to be incredibly important on
defense as well for people who mightbe a little bit you know, unsure
about strategy of volleyball, and especiallywith you know what your job or what
your position would be. How doyou best describe what you do when you're
(04:06):
on the court to people who mightnot be as familiar with the game.
I think my role as a middleblocker is to try to touch and it's
possible stuff every ball. I've triedto transition really quick at and off the
net and just rep be permanent andbe resting it up when the Saturday's meet.
So that's pretty much my paying job, and it's one that you do
(04:29):
very well. I must say.You look at your statistics and obviously I'm
going into your third professional season. What does Nebraska mean to you? Omaha
obviously is a place very close byto Lincoln, where you spent some time,
But if you're you know, foryou personally coming from a large city
like Chicago and having all this greatexperience with these large programs, what does
(04:49):
this state in Nebraska mean to you? And how excited are you to come
back and play at Omaha. I'mreally excited. I mean nothings to take
away the years that I've been inNebraska. I'm forever great for those years.
And I mean I just came backfrom Nicklin Hayines's wedding, and so
I should tell you everything that youneed to know is that those connections and
relationships that you build their lifelong, and I don't take that for granted.
(05:10):
So I really enjoyed my time inNebraska, and I really hold all my
memories really true and dear to myheart, all my friendships and teammates as
well. So I'm really excited tojust come back and play. Yeah.
No, and we're excited to seethis. Gosh, we still have so
much time before the season starts, and we're excited for that. We have
a entire collegiate volleyball season, andobviously you have some ties to some of
(05:31):
the best programs in the nation whenit comes to volleyball. I mean,
did you I'm sure you followed enoughabout college volleyball to see that Nebraska was
able to draw ninety three thousand orso, you know, screaming rabbit fans
for a volleyball matchup Memorial Stadium atthe beginning of the year last year.
What does that mean to the growthof this sport and also what it means
(05:54):
to the people of Nebraska. Forsure, I touched on that a little
bit in our intro I thought itwas really awesome. I think it was
called like the Volleyball or Basket Dayor something, and I just said that
that's really really exciting and it's reallyrolled over. It's professional volleyball too.
Like people are excited, people areloving the sport, and I think that
that's awesome. That's like the publicityand everything that we need to get this
(06:15):
league off the ground and keep ithere to say, because I think that
college volleyball woman college volleyball is reallyalready growing the sport now that we have
professionals, people are coming out aswe see from the Supernova games and even
like when I was in Grand Rapids, So I think that was really vital
and pivotal for this sport. Yeah, and it's something that tells you all
you need to know about how Nebraskafeels about this in the Supernovas with incredible
(06:38):
attendance over eleven thousand people on average. We're going to Supernova's games last year,
and I'm sure that crowd it's reallyexcited to get there once again and
watch the Supernova's play. You're goingto be seeing enables that you're on.
Some former Huskers as well, includingKayla Caffey and Kayla, we really appreciate
the time. Can't wait to seein a Supernova's uniform, and please enjoy
what you're doing. Coming back hereNebraska for next season. We're really excited
(07:01):
to watch it play. Yay awesome. Thank you so much for your time.
Absolutely, Kayla Caffey, one ofthe newest Omaha Supernova. Is always
fun to catch up with somebody whohas a little bit of a history in
the state of Nebraska.
