(00:00):
Sean Callihan is joining us for Huskerbuzz here from Big Ten Media Days as
it's wrapping up here in Indianapolis. Is there an off season for a guy
like you. There's a few weekshere and there, but you know,
July definitely is nice. I meanthere's you know, anytime the recruits can't
visit a campus, that's kind ofthe off season, and July is one

(00:21):
of those periods. In February isnow one of those periods where you can't
have recruits come. But anytime youcan actually have people visit your campus,
there's always potential news that can happen. So we're in it now. I
mean in Nebraska, by the way, we'll have a major recruiting weekend here
this weekend. We're five star offensivelineman David Sanders could be coming into Lincoln,

(00:43):
among some other high, high profilerecruits. So we're drinking out of
fire hose at this point right now. That fire hose pretty interesting for ten,
twelve, sixteen, eighteen teams. Now, what's the feel there versus
pre you Big ten Media Days. No, it's a little bit more spread

(01:03):
out. I'll say that it's sixteams per day. Last year it was
seven and it was a two dayevent, and I think when it was
just two day event, a lotof the media stayed for both days.
I will say now that they've spreadthis thing out the three days, it
doesn't start till eleven am local timeeach day out here, so you know,
I think the crowd is a littlebit more manageable. You Michigan tomorrow,

(01:26):
Ohio State was yesterday. Today wasPenn State, Nebraska, and the
two California schools in Iowa. Soit was a really good group of teams
today that went. But I feellike the expand expansion of this event to
three days, you know, haskind of didn't it out a little bit
because a lot of people might onlystay for the one day their teams here.

(01:48):
And you get the national guys thatwill stay for all three and some
other people, but for most ofthe beat people like me, your focus
is your one day that your teamis here. And for us it was
today, Nebraska, California schools. It still kind of just breaks my brain
that that's something you had to clarifythere, because the California schools is a
thing now. And before I talkabout the Huskers, what a weird thing

(02:10):
for a new head coach like DeshanFoster to have to do for a new
conference. He just like, Idon't know if you saw what he was
up to, but I mean hewas just like stumbling around in the way
that he was trying to speak andis like, I don't really have any
prepared remarks, Like I'll just kindof take your questions. It's not really
I don't think an indictment of himspecifically, but of the exercise as a
whole. Do we get a lotout of this thing? I know that

(02:31):
you're looking for all sorts of stuffall year long, but you know,
I watch that and I was justlike, man, if I'm a UCLA
fan, I don't know how goodI feel about my head coach. But
at the same time, how muchdo we need to be caring about what
we're hearing from head coaches on mediadays? Well, a lot of it
is it's just kind of a gatheringof the conference together. It's a made
for television event now on the Bigten network, So it's great content.

(02:54):
And you know, for the nationalmedia groups, they get a lot of
interviews and is done at these thingswith the coaches and the players. They
can utilize a year round, soit's a multi pronged thing. There's meetings
here for the athletic directors, butyeah, it's fairly controlled now for the
media that cover your teams, youget fifteen minutes of Matt Role on the

(03:15):
stage and that's the part that's airedon TV. We always get the athletic
director, Troy Dan, and wegot him today for fifteen minutes on the
side. Then Matt Rule did anotherforty five minutes on a side podium they
call it, and then each oneof the three players at the same time
has their own side podium and theygo thirty minutes. So you've got three

(03:36):
side player interviews at thirty minutes,Matt Rule forty five and fifteen and Troy
Dan and for fifteen And that's reallythe day if you're a Nebraska media member
as far as that stuff. Butthen you try to get more things on
your own. On the side, there's a lot of people available to grab
and talk to and you know,if you needed Matt Role, he'll talk
to you for other stuff. ForTroy Dan and Rick Neuheisel was a hot
name today the CBS College football andnow announcer off So who hosts the national

(04:00):
radio show former Colorado coach. Hehad a large group around him during his
media availability. So there's a lotthat you can get done. It's a
matter of how much you want towalk around and how hard you want to
grab and go after things. SeanCallahan for Husker Buzz or a Husker insider
joining us right now. The quarterbackconversation is going to lead I think,
every single day until we actually startplaying games. It did last year with

(04:25):
Matt Rule coming to campus, andyou know, I don't think Jeff Simms
was like the most exciting type ofperson to be talking about in that role.
It's going to be interesting to seewhat a first year head coach looks
like now that we know that there'ssome infrastructure already here and all of a
sudden, that quarterback room looks prettycrowded with guys that we think can actually,
you know, do some stuff. What is the vibe that you're getting

(04:46):
right now from not just a coachrule, but from your own personal perspective
about how this is going to behandled throughout the rest of the camp until
we start playing games in a month. Well named Dylan Ryl as a starter,
but I think anybody that knows anythingor has a feel or you know,
of this program. He's the guy. I mean, it's just a
matter of how and when they decideto make that official announcement. And they

(05:11):
really like Heiner Hartberg. I thinkthat he's going to give them something still
to help this team. Highly respected, great athlete, Daniel Kalin's a great
young quarterback. They added Jalen graham'stadfrom Northwestern Naia School in Iowa, and
he's been a great veteran. Andthey've added the room twenty five and one
as a college football starter, NationalPlayer of the Year a year ago.
So they liked the room, themakeup. But Dylan's the guy. Let's

(05:34):
not even beat around the bush here, like unless he got hurt or something,
it's going to be Dylan Ryal alot. Okay, well, five
star recruit that was highly publicized,a little bit of a legacy with that
last name at Nebraska, you wouldthink, but you know, just you
talk about all three of those otherguys, you know you had another four
star guy. You got a guythat was your starter most of last year

(05:57):
who's got Nebraska tized as well, and then the National player of the Year
at the level of football he wasplaying at also joining in. That's a
bit of a crowded conversation there, but they're going to need some players to
be around them. We saw untimelyfumbles and turnovers and just maybe not just
the lack of being able to throwthe ball, but the lack of being
able to catch the ball in someways. What's that offense looking like this
year? In the confidence level thatyou're getting a vibe from from the players

(06:19):
that you got to talk to todayas well as a guy like Matt Ruhle
who certainly keeps it real more oftenthan not. Well, I think the
receiver position is going to be theone that will look the most upgraded immediately.
Jamal Banks isaiae or outstanding additions.Malachi Coleman wasn't around the spring.
He's going to be a factor.Carter Nelson, they raved about the freshman

(06:43):
from Ainsworth, Nebraska. He isnow playing more of a receiver role and
Matt Rule said he's a difference maker. We've got to get him on the
field. So Carter Nelson, Ithink, is another name that really saw
his stock rise here today, andhe was the highest rank recruit in the
state. The recruiting class, Georgiaand Alabama. Everyone wanted this guy,
so it's not a surprise because otherthan Dylan Royola, no other player in

(07:05):
this recruiting class is as highly recruitedas Carter Nelson. And he's turned heads
already early on, so that that'sencouraging. Jalen Lloyd, I think the
offensive line, it's a veteran groupand it's an old you know, they've
played a lot of games. Ithink Mike and Mazuka, the transfer from
Florida who's played a lot of football. He played at Baylor. He's been
a three year starter in college football. That's the name I think that will

(07:27):
eventually end up being a starter whenthe season starts off as a left guard.
So they like the makeup of thisoffense. The running back position,
that's a mystery as far as who'sgoing to emerge from that pack. Is
it Gabe Urbs or Amir Johnson,is Emma Johnson, Dante val Bell.
There's four guys that can play. It's just a matter of how they want
to sort the carries and and somebody'sgonna have to emerge. I think that's

(07:48):
going to be a big thing thathas to happen. Still, yeah,
and the running game is going toneed to be a true compliment to help
out, you know, a truefreshman quarterback, no matter how advanced he
is, especially in a conference. And Matt Rule says, hey, four
schools from this conference should be gettinginto the new twelve team college football playoff
every year. Now, I don'tknow exactly how that's going to work.

(08:09):
I bought the new video game CollegeFootball twenty five and I don't know if
you've spent any hours on that,But as far as that simulating engine goes,
the Big Ten is, you know, a little brother of the SEC
big time. Now, I'm nottaking a lot of stock in a video
game here, Sean, but whatI'm saying is there's a lot that has
to go right for a conference toget a third of the teams into a
twelve team playoff, right, Yeah, I think the Big Ten and the

(08:31):
SEC are in a position. Look, there's going to be four conference champions
plus the highest ranked non Power fourteams, So there's five locked in bids
and then there's seven more remaining bids. And you know, the general consensus
is the SEC and the Big Tenare going to get a good chunk of
those remaining bits. Notre Dame isalmost a block though, to get a

(08:52):
bid every year too. So whenyou look at it, it's really six
bids, and can the SEC andthe Big Ten, you know, get
three or four teams in, andis the Big twelve and the ACC good
enough to get one of those bids? I mean that there's a lot there.
This playoff will expand, But yeah, I think it's a safe bet
that between the Big Ten and theSEC, seven of the twelve teams in

(09:15):
the playoff are going to be forthose two leagues. If not eight,
Wow, well, I have tosay this, it'd be good for school
like Nebraska to be able to havea little bit more of that wiggle room
there. But it'll be interesting tosee how that affects the way that we
view our regular season and how importantthose games become for teams that are ranked
you know, pretty safely in thetop you know, five or six,

(09:35):
knowing that you can get a firstround by but also knowing that there is
a little bit of a bubble therethat you can survive. On Sean Callahan,
we are going to talk a lotmore on a very regular basis here
coming up in the next few weeks. Gosh, it's already the end of
July here, so try to getas much rest as you can, my
friend. Thanks so much for yourcoverage in Indianapolis for Big ten media days,

(09:56):
and we'll chat with you again verysoon. Hey, thank you.
It's a good thing you haven't hadmuch to talk about later. Oh yeah,
no, no, nothing at all, nothing at all these four hours
just you know, they I'm strugglingto fill this up. I'll tell you
what, all right. Sewan Callahana Husker insider for a Husker Buzz.
We thank him for joining us.
