Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining us right now to talk a little bit about
the wine part of that thing. Scott Benjamin from a
little Swan Lake Winery. Scott, thanks so much for being
on our show today.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Yeah, Bett, you've met go ahead to be part of
this whole situation. We've been doing it for several quite
a few years actually, and that's really a lot of fun.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Yeah, let's go, Scott, Let's go ahead and start with
the event itself. You obviously have been a part of it,
like you mentioned before, what about this with all these
different wineries that are coming together and all these people
that just enjoy wine as a whole among all the
other fun things they can see? What about this makes
this such a fun event?

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Basically, we do. We've been I don't know, we've been
open twenty one years and part of the festival for
I don't know ten maybe, and we just enjoy seeing
all the people who enjoying wine and having a good
tayment at the festival, and like you mentioned, there's lots

(00:58):
of food and live entertainment and it's just a fun
day definitely one day.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Yeah, and we and we I was there last year
for the first time and just had a blast because
of all the different things that are going on. It's
just a great way to spend a week in the
Omaha area over there at Tahazuka Park and Elkhorn Little
Swan like winery. Can you tell us where about you
guys are located and like kind of what you guys do.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Okay, we're in Northwest I basically between Estra Villain, Spirit Lake,
just east of the Okoboji area. Okay, we make thirty
some different ones here. We do a lot of dry
reds and curse people's tastes or all across the board.

(01:44):
So we do it a little bit of everything. We
also have live music three times a week and we
raised buffalos also. We have heard of six sixty some buffaloes.
And when there's live music, there is a meal and
it's reason buffalo, so that, you know, kind of fits

(02:06):
all fits together. We also have a bed and breakfast here. Wow,
so a little bit of everything.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
Yeah, that is interesting. We're speaking of Scott Benjamin who's
with Little One Lake Winery, Little Swan Lake Winery in
like kind of Estervale Spirit Lake area kind of in
between there. As he mentioned, Scott, the winery business is
an interesting one. You know. I'm at the Iowa State Fair,
and I popped over and checked out Grandfather's Farm where
they have all of the wines that you can try

(02:35):
out and all that stuff. And I'm so fascinated by
some of the infusion of flavor and some of the
different strategies or different grapes and how much different a
wine taste. Can you take me a little bit through
the process of what it takes to have a wine
that you're really proud of.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Well, basically, there's one major rule, and you start with
good grapes and don't screw them up. Simple. Basically wine
making is simple. It's it's just taking good care of
the grapes all of every step of the way. The

(03:13):
different east wine each you use make a difference. If
you put your wines in barrels, the source of the
burrow makes a difference. Different grapes. The same grapes from
different locations are different because the soil is different and
the weather is different, and every little thing makes a difference.

(03:38):
And I learned a lot of years ago that every
wine maker can straight with the same grapes and the
wines end up being totally different. Just all, like I say,
all the little steps you use along the way, the
steps you do, the length of time it takes, and

(04:04):
a lot of this is you can read a lot
and learn a lot, but mostly you're learned by doing.
And like I say, just don't screw up. That's all.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
I think that could be a good words of wisdom
for pretty much everybody out there, right, just don't screw
it up. S got Benjamin with a little swan like
Winer rejoining us. So we talk about the wine. You
have a lot of other things going on there, but
people are very passionate about this. Is there something that
you could tell us about how to properly taste wine?
Because it's not. If you really want to get all

(04:38):
of the enjoyment and fulfillment with these labor of love
that wine is, there's a kind of a strategy to
how you can you know, kind of have all of
the senses involved with tasting wine right.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Well, you basically smell it, get the aromas, take a
little sip at a time, take your time, and breathe
in through your mouth and out through your nose, and
you'll get a lot more flavor profiles with your sense

(05:14):
of smell. And it's mostly use your user sense of
the you have. You know, like I say, the aroma
is a big part of any kind of food, uh
or drink, So enjoy that. Take your time, swirl it

(05:36):
around in the glass if it. If it especially darker
red wine lets more air, gets more air involved, so
you get more flavor. So the wines that are chilled,
the white wines and lighter wines, Uh, they're meant to
be light and fresh and fruity, uh and chilling them

(06:01):
helps keep that in the wine, you know. Yeah, So
big red wines are generally served at room temperature because
they're meant to be big and bold, and if you
chill them, it poses the flavor down. So big red
wines room temperature is best.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Now it's interesting wrapping up here with Scott Benjamin from
Little swan Like Winery. I'd like to know a couple
of the wines that you think are the best work
that you guys? Do you talk about all the different
wines that you have that many people are going to
get a chance to have an opportunity to taste at
the Nebraska Balloon and Wine Festival this coming Friday and Saturday.
What are a couple of the wines that you think
people need to be looking out for. From Little swan

(06:43):
Like Winery.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Well, two wines at the opposite end of the spectrum.
We have one called twenty nine, which is a Cabernet blend,
so big dry red. It's named twenty nine because our
first big Buffalo Bolt ear To was twenty nine, so
we named the wine after him. At the opposite him

(07:05):
is our Summer Peach, which is sweet and smooth and
light refreshing. So like they say, some of the either
end of the spectrum dry too sweet, and then we'll
bring several others kind of in between those. I have
another dry red that's coming, also a Surrah, So you know,

(07:31):
I try to do a variety, I guess so because
like I said, people's taste are all acrcavillard. So the
twenty nine in the Summer Peach is the two featured wines. Basically,
I love to hear that.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Scott Benjamin from Little swan Like Winery one of many
wineries you're going to get a chance to taste when
you go to Tahouse. You could park this Friday and
Saturday in Elkhorn to check out the Nebraska Balloon and
Wine Festival. Scott, thanks so much for calling in and
giving us this info and have some a lot of
fun over there at the park on Friday and.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Saturday, you bet, thank you much.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
Absolutely, And speaking of you can get a ton of
information by just googling the Nebraska Balloon and Wine Festival
to get your tickets and get your set up so
you can have it a memorable Friday and or Saturday
over at the festival in Elkhorn
