Speaker 1 (00:00):
Come across the border of the Missouri and you can
find America's best zoo, Henry Dorley Zoo and Aquarium. And
joining us in the studio to talk about that my
friend jac Colson, and she is sitting next to me.
It's good to see you in person.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Yeah, it's good to see you. It's been a while.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Yeah, it's it's been what probably a couple months since
we last talked to you. Guys are so busy, it's
like it just comes at you. I think the last
time we talked was something elephant related. Probably maybe I
have no idea I wanted to talk about Kroc.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Yes, I could love to talk to you about Crocs.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Not Crocs, the shoes though, because I saw on your
thing here that there's a thing you guys are doing
called Croctober.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
C October Festa Toberfest.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Okay, so first off, you guys just preemptively for anybody
who isn't familiar with the Zoo. You're always thinking about
different ways to celebrate different parts of the year with
different people, various experiences that people can have at the zoo.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
October Fest. I can guess when this is going to happen.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Yeah, so actually your guests might be wrong because it's
taking place in September.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
Oh now, see, this is why you bring the experts off.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Yeah, all right, every Thursday in September. It's an evening event,
so it's kind of it's an offshoot of our Late
Nights at the Zoo event series. But basically, what we're
doing is engaging the festive spirit of Octoberfest and mixing
it with a fascinating world of crocodilians. So we'll have

(01:28):
some educational pieces to learn about alligators and crocodiles, and
then some more Octoberfest pieces like a beer haul with
with some live music and performances, some great food, some
great drinks. It's going to be really fun.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
I love this so and for anybody who has ever
been to an Octoberfest, a ridiculous number of them happen
in September I have noticed, which is very strange even
in Germany, like Octoberfest is happening in September. So you
guys are right on there. But every Thursday before we
talk about the the two thursdays before that, you still
do have regular late Nights at the Zoo, right, Yes, we.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Can't forget the last Thursdays in August of the twenty
second and the twenty ninth, we have some late nights
at the Zoo. So the twenty ninth actually is a
decade night, So it's a themed night. It's gonna be fun.
We're throwing it back. We're encouraging people to show up
in their best era, whichever.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Era that was.

Speaker 4 (02:25):
You.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
Well, what about you, Like, are you gonna dress up?
You have to write, I guess yeah, I probably will. Okay,
so can I guess you're nineties girl?

Speaker 2 (02:35):
And that's a pretty fair guess.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
I mean, I was born in the nineties, but I
feel like I'm more of like an eighties guy. Yeah, yeah,
I missed my era. Yeah, this is a chance for
me to regain my era while I also walk around
and look at bats in the basement of the of
the Desert home, right, something you can do. I'm looking
at all the things that you got going on. You
got besides these two Thursdays coming up for regularly nights

(03:00):
this c October Fest. You talked about the music, You
talked about some of the features that this has. But
there's stuff that you know, like karaoke here is that
like people can just go to the Zoo and party
with some karaoke.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Yeah, so we're having Krocstar karaoke. So whoever does the
best is going to get their name commemorated in the
Croc Star Walk of Fame. So we kind of took
Croc to the max for this event. But it's fine.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Hear that, Matt Case. You got to like, this is
the the next thing you need to do. Find one
of these dates. Can there only be one? Or can
will there be multiple people on the Crocstar will Walk
of Fame.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
There's going to be multiple. Everyone has a shot.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
Yeah, Matt Case, this is get your opportunity. Yeah, and
you have to go, you know, with one of the standbys,
like like, you got to get some creed in there. Okay, yeah,
some creed. Isn't that Human Clay? Yeah yeah yeah, Human Clay?
Yeah right, Yeah, Matt's a great guy. You just got
to you gotta get him the right song, that's true. Yeah,
you know what I do Rick Astley pretty well as well.

(04:06):
Okay that you're thinking of Eras night. They're not doing
karaoke on that night, all right, but you can dress
up like Rick Astley and go to I could pull
that off. Yeah, No, I don't think you can, but
thanks for thanks for bringing that up. We're speaking with J. C.
Coulson and not Matt Case now that he brought up
rick Rick Astley and trying to rick roll everybody in here.
You're a younger person. This zoo is incredible. You have

(04:26):
a lot of energy. You talk about some of the
things that you've gone and seen around the country, because
that's part of your job is you get to go
see some other zoos and things like this. We talked
about this once. This year's size of this zoo that
you guys have is pretty incomparable to most zoos in America.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Would that be an accurate statement.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
Well, I wouldn't say. We don't have the biggest sue
by acres, I can't remember who holds that title, but
we are over one hundred and sixty acres, so definitely
not a small campus.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
That's a I think it was Cincinnati we were talking about.
They're really well renowned, but they're a small zoo, right they.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
I'll tell you though, they pack a lot of punch
into the size that they are. It's it's a really
great zoo. I had the like we talked about. I
had the pleasure of visiting them this spring and it
is a great zoo.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
Well it's got to be the hippos for them, right, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
Fiona she's the star. Yeah, she's the star. It was
cool to see her just because of how well known
she is.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
Yeah, and for anybody who doesn't know, Fiona was well
known because she was a premi baby, and I mean
they didn't know she was gonna make it.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Yeah, yeah, but she persevered and survived. It's very similar
to the story of our reticulated giraffe calf Hope, who
had she wasn't She wasn't premature necessarily, but she had
sort of a rough start as well, but was able
to persevere and survive and inspire our zoo community.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
So jac Colson from the Henry dor Ley Zoo and
Aquarium joining us here. I've done the zoo a few times.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
There's so much. There's so much.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
But this is the thing I think people don't unders
about zoos is you guys operate year round. It is
not just like everything stops when the temperature gets under
sixty degrees. A lot of your animals actually seem to
really thrive when the seasons do end up changing. So
how do you best describe that for people who might
just see the zoo as kind of this summer thing
to do.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Yeah, there's things happening all year round, even our special events.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
We have.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
A fall event and we have a holiday event, so
we have things going on all the time. And the
same with our animals. We have seven acres of indoor exhibits,
so even on those really chilly days, you can still
see a lot of cool stuff and warm up in
the desert or in the jungle. You have lots of options.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
We speaking of babies now, I'm thinking of what we've
talked about as well, bat eared fox. We saw the
baby bat eared fox when you took me around the
zoo a couple months ago. How's the bat eared fox
is doing.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
They're good. Yeah, they're almost the size of their parents now,
so already. Yeah, so they get big pretty fast. But yeah,
they're good.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
That's and they are located also in the desert dome,
so very easy to see when they're you know, when
they're visible.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
Sometimes they are not so visible.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
If somebody is listening to this, they're thinking, Okay, the
late nights at the zoo, the next two Thursdays, Croctober Fest,
all the fun that you guys are going to have
with the theme nights every Thursday through September. How can
I be a part of something like this? What are
the ways they can do that?

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Yeah, so you can go to our website. If you're
wanting to go to late Nights, it's omahazoo dot com
slash Late Nights. And if you're wanting to visit us
for Kroctoberfest, it's omahazoo dot com slash Croctoberfest. But you
can do both, so I don't want to limit you here.
You can do better.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
Yeah, you could go every week if you wanted to.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Sare good, and then you get four chances Matt Case
to be on the Crocstar Walk of Fame with four
different tunes. Right, you can feel it out, feel out
your audience.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
I got some options.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
Yeah, there you go. Just don't wear that shirt anyway.
The last thing I wanted to mention with you because
you get to see the zoo every single day. Sorry,
we talk about different animals every single time, and I
get kind of obsessed with different animals as I kind
of walk through and stuff I saw social media. There's

(08:13):
like I learned about the Pink Fairy armadillo which apparently
is an armadillo that lives in Argentina somewhere, and it
looks ridiculous. I'll show you a picture after this, And
I was like, I've never even heard or seen that.
Give me an animal that people may not have heard of,
may not have like seen in a book or on
social media, that they could find at the Henry Dorley
Zoo and Aquarium.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Ooh yeah, I'm thinking the okopy. Yeah. So their backside
is striped. It almost looks like a zebra. So people
think that they're related to the zebra, but they're actually
most closely related to the giraffe. So they're really interesting animal.
If you're walking from the jungle to the aquarium, they're

(08:56):
on your right hand side. Don't miss them. They're really cool.

Speaker 1 (08:59):
Yeah copy, Yeah, a little that extra hoofstock. You know,
people may not be thinking about them.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
I love it.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
You can find the old copy, You can find the giraffes,
you can find thousands of other fine creatures that are
happy and healthy hanging out at the best zoo in America,
Henry's the Henry Dorley Zoo and Aquarium. And a person
that's helping give us all the information is JC Colson
has always an absolute pleasure to speak with you. Thanks
for coming in today, and we'll chat again, I'm sure

(09:26):
very soon.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
Yeah, thanks for having me. I'll have to be back
soon for sure.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
Yeah, we can talk about all sorts of stuff. We
can actually probably talk about Matt Case's performance and whether
or not he was able to achieve his goal of
being on the Croc star Walk of Fame.

Speaker 4 (09:40):
We already know the answer to that, but I think
it would be a great conversation about the I mean,
what's my next step after this performance? Are we talking
deals real labels? Yeah, the zoo is actually going to
be like that. That's maybe the thing you pray orders
you perform for the sea lions and the and they're like,
oh please come on man, we have ears too.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Five twenty nine. We'll wrap things up the next half hour.
We're gonna have a lot of fun.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
I want to talk to you about donkeys next, and
not in like a zoo way, in an actual useful
way outside of zoo's captivity and just being protectors in general.
