Speaker 1 (00:00):
There's a on YouTube you can find a bunch of
old games. I've been watching a game from two thousand
and one Notre Dame at Boston College. Oh, William Green
is going crazy on those Irish guys.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
William Green. You know what I watched last night? What
a fifty five minute documentary about Mike leach Ooh yeah,
I'm sure that was colorful. It was good.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
It was good, all right? Well, speaking of colorful, how
about this true freshman quarterback? Five star recruit Dylan Royola
has been given the keys to the Husker offense, Officially
named the starter today by Nebraska Football for their Week
one matchup against the Miners of UTEP. Joining us to
talk about that as our Husker insider. His name is
Sean Callahana. Sean, Well, how's it going today?

Speaker 3 (00:39):
I'm doing great? Yeah, a big day. Kind of one
of those real predictable announcements. Is this a matter of
how and when Matt Rule was going to do it?
And you know, all the media, we were all kind
of speculating, would they drop it on their YouTube show
that didn't happen? Will they announced it last weekend after
the scrimmage that didn't happen he's on the radio tonight
with the state wide show. Well, they announced it on

(01:01):
social media today and then we'll hear again from Rule
on Friday. But I think by doing it the way
they did it just kind of lets things kind of
simmer down, not making it a huge deal, and by Friday,
when we hear from Rule again, it will really be
old news by that point. So I think obviously you
had to make this announcement in some way or form,
but I think they've done it in a way that

(01:22):
you can kind of turn the page and just worry
about UTUB from here on out, instead of trying to
make it some big crowning ceremony where you announce it
like at a press conference.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
Yeah, and I guess you know. I talked to you
as camp was starting, probably at the end of last
month or early this month, about something, and I think
the overarching message was this guy was always going to
be the guy. There was no way you could go
otherwise unless there was something physically wrong with him. At
the beginning of the season, you kind of had to
roll him out there. This This was certainly not a

(01:54):
big issue, I don't think for anybody out there, But
there is all of a sudden, a little bit of
depth and a little bit of competitionsition for the spots
behind him in case of emergency kind of thing. What
can we look at as far as the rest of
the depth start in the quarterback room.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Goes well, Heiner Carberg, I would think it's your number two.
He started eight games, he won five, He'll go in
number two. And then obviously you've got Daniel Kalin of
the true freshman from Bellvue West who was highly recruited
as well, and you know you can play him ideally
in up to four games this year and preserve his
year with the red shirt. And then you have Jalen
grahamstat from Northwestern in Iowa, who was the national nai

(02:34):
A Player of the Year, was twenty four and one
as a starting quarterback at Northwestern. So they've got a
really really good rum and that's your fourth guy. You know,
that's a very very good quarterback room going in and
it's hard to have four players like that in your
room that all want to be here, especially in the
transfer portal. And the one nice thing Emery now is

(02:56):
it wasn't until about a year or two ago they
put this cap on the portal where you can't just
enter at any time, and you would see players in
the heart of training camp just enter the portal or transfer,
and then they could land in a new school almost
at that point and get in there by that point.
That can't happen now, like you have to wait until
the season is over in December to enter into the

(03:18):
transfer portal. In twenty eighteen, we saw Dream Martinez name
is starting quarterback Tristan Jebia then went into the portal
the next day and because Oregon stayed at that time
operated on the quarter system, he was able to transfer
in there without even any issues at all and then
use a red shirt in that year, be able to

(03:38):
sit out that year in Corvallis as his sitout year
because that was before the one time transfer or rule
came into play where you could just transfer without having
to sit out. And now that's obviously a different deal,
but you don't have to worry about that, is what
I'm saying. Like Harvard just packing up and leaving town,
or Kaylin or any of these quarterbacks.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
It's interesting we're springing with John Callay in here, Dylan
Royola going to be the starter a week one. Is
there any i don't know how much information we'd even
get at this point, because I'm sure they don't want
to waste it talking about it. But is there a
chance that there could be, you know, some packages that
could involve Harburg and his ability to run or his size,

(04:21):
or are there packages that you could, you know, have
Daniel Kaalin maybe get a couple of reps here or there.
I know you don't want to create any like rift there,
but at the same time you also would like to
keep the war chest full at this position. Is there
any way that you could see maybe a little bit
of that in terms of like additional kind of gadget
packages that could feature a couple of these guys.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Well, I think you would be Harburg if there was one.
It's just a matter of his value as the number two,
and you know how they want to utilize him. But
I do think you'll see it now. They won't talk
about it. They're not going to tip their hand on
what they have, but Harburg has done all that already,
so they could easily just enter him in in different
roles and do that. And look, he's not a tight end.

(05:04):
I mean, they could put him in that kind of role,
but he's a quarterback and a ball carrier, and I
think if they did, yeah, it would make sense, but
it's something they'll sit on. I can't imagine they're just
going to make that a part of the everyday offense.
Think it's going to be a situational change up if
they ever did something like that, especially like in the
red zone or in a short yardage situation, you could
bring him out there as an extra player and do something.

(05:26):
But it's again not something that we've actually heard anybody
say in August.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
It's interesting, you know, how the schedule aligns, and I
hate playing the win lost game. And we'll talk a
lot more about this throughout the season because of our
daily Husker buzz that will start next week. But you know,
I have to think at the early portion of this season,
you got to learn as much as you can about
these guys before you get into conference play and start,
you know, getting those tougher opponents. As the season wears on,

(05:52):
it feels like it it's tougher and tougher on the schedule.
What are you expecting to be a couple of guys
that were going to learn an awful lot about because
of the way they're featured on either offense or defense
for the Huskers those first couple of weeks.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
As far as what do you mean what guys.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Well, basically just kind of like, which players do you
think are probably not being talked about a whole lot,
but are going to certainly be a factor on both
sides of the football that you think they're going to
be massive players that we're going to learn about as
the early portion of the season wears on.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
That's hard for me to answer because we talk about
a lot of these guys every day, so sure not
a lot of the prizes of my world.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
In your world, that's a bad question probably.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
But Mikah Mazuka, I think is a guy on the
old line who will come in and really turn some heads.
As a newcomer transfer. He could end up being their
best offensive lineman. I mean that would not surprise me.
I believe the two receivers Jamal Banks and Isaiah and
a Or are poised for really, really big seasons. Deshaun Singleton,
coming back off injury in the secondary, is a name

(06:53):
to watch. He might be their most physical defensive player
on the back end. I mean he's like six '
five and he's going to really bring the hammer down
on people, so you know, there's not a lot of
surprises this defense. Nine of the eleven single digit jerseys
that are nine of the ten single digit jerseys that
will be handed out are on the defense, so it
tells you how strong this unit is. Where the offense

(07:15):
is newer with transfer players, with newcomers like Ryola, so
there's a lot there. Jacry Barney is a freshman receiver
that I think a lot of Husker fans are going
to like, and he's going to probably return kicks too.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
Here's a non college related question when you mentioned kickoffs,
and I did want to get your thought on this
because the NFL in college football they operate in different realms,
but the NFL is instituting the kickoff rule that was
in the XFL essentially where too like the two teams
basically the coverage unit and the blocking unit are within
five yards, they have to be stationary until the ball

(07:50):
is caught. It's going to look very strange for those
who haven't actually watched it before, but it seems like
it's going to be a net positive at least in
terms of strategy because it's going to bring offs back
into the sport where that really hasn't always been the
same way in college football. You see a lot of
guys just take that fair catch anywhere inside the fifteen
yard line. They don't even you know, they can catch
it anywhere in there and they'll it'll be considered a touchback.

(08:14):
Do you see potentially a change of the kickoff rule
at the collegiate level being a positive or is that
something that you think is not even being talked about
at this point.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
Well, I'm sure we'll get to that point and it'll
hit the rules committee and the discussions and then they'll
have to make that call. But yeah, it's such an
exciting play that you're messing with, and I think about
like records and stats, and when you're messing with the kickoff,
you're messing with stats and records and too, I mean
because it changes field position and like some different things

(08:43):
in the history of the game, where you know, a
lot of the records and history of college football are
with traditional kick returns, So what will that do to
field position? Like when you did like an average of
any NFL it's I'll be interested in the year over
your data, average starting field position this year versus average
starting field position the previous five years, right, because that
will be something to look at your teams starting deeper,

(09:06):
our better field position. I mean, what will the results
be in the end and how many kick returns for
touchdowns will we see what this new return versus what
we had seen with the traditional returns.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
Yeah, it is interesting and obviously in the name of
safety because concussions are such a big deal. One other
thing for you, and it's about equipment on concussions as well.
I watch Hard Knocks because the Chicago Bears are my
favorite team. I love watching it, and I mean every
single position. Now, I was wearing those guardian caps on
their helmets during practice. It used to be just kind
of the linemen. They made a rule that the lineman

(09:39):
had to You're seeing it a lot at various colleges
where it feels like if they're wearing helmets, the guardian
cap is on during practice. Can you explain kind of
the evolution of how much we're seeing of this and
is this something that could eventually find its way on
game day?

Speaker 3 (09:54):
Yeah. I mean I use it like a boxing analogy.
It's almost like a boxer wearing headgear, protective headgear. It
just limits the blow you're still going to get hit,
but it kind of softens the impact. And Nebraska is
wearing those now too. Everyone is, I mean, at our
on three elite serious convention in Nashville, the Guardian folks
spoke at it and just how much their industry has

(10:15):
taken off with this product and what they're doing with it,
and you know, we're seeing it. I have friends that
have sons that are playing in the Lincoln Youth Midget
Football League and parents are buying those Guardian caps for
fifth graders playing football. So yeah, I do think it's
going to be pretty widespread, especially in practice where you
see it. But at the highest levels, you know, that's

(10:36):
where concussions are the most prevalent because those guys are
running as fast as anybody. They're stronger than everybody, and
they know how to get low and they know how
to hit you harder. We're in the high school ranks,
yeah you get concussions, but not near the ranks of
college and pro football. And I talked to one of
the coaches here in the metro. They had a kind
of an alarm system on helmets now that notifies them

(10:59):
if a player or takes a hit. That's you know,
concussion level, and he told me in one season they
only had one. The alarm only went off one time,
and it was a division It was an impact hit
from their Division IE player on their team. So I
think a lot of people would be surprised. Yeah, they
can happen at the high school and youth level, but
they're not as prevalent as the college and the pro

(11:20):
level because those dudes know how to hit. They're strong,
and they all run four four four, five forties, and
when they're coming at you with that strength and speed,
that's where that's where there's a lot more risk in
my opinion for sure.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
Hey, it's going to be uh it's interesting to see
where the sport is kind of going in terms of
trying to think about safety while still having that you know,
fly around, violent nature of the sport that made it
so popular to begin with. John Callahan can't wait to
talk to you every day starting on Monday with Husker Buzz.
Thanks for dropping in today and we'll talk to you soon.

Speaker 3 (11:48):
Hey, thanks, Emory, all right, I love it.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
Huskers ten days kickoff, UTEP can't wait. Dylan Ryola, by
the way, I've been cutting it up with him and
in a College Football twenty five The A Sports Game
been cutting it up with him.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:03):
Yeah, it doesn't help that I'm playing UTEP every game,
but you know, just like just getting a feel for
what the game might look like. And is it bad
that I play it in the sun Bowl pretty much
every time because I just love the Sun Bowl. It's
a great venue, and that's where the miners play their
home games. You know those mountains sprinkled in the background.
That's great. It's so good. Anyway, Hey, we'll take a break,
come back with more. Four to twenty on news radio

(12:24):
eleven ten KFAB.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
Emerys Sung on news radio eleven ten KFAB.

Speaker 1 (12:33):
Cincinnati. The only team they play that's ranked in the
preseason is Kansas State Iowa. Their only team is Ohio
State Kansas Kansas State again the University of Miami Hurricanes.
They play just Florida State Pittsburgh. They only play Clemson SMU.
Their only game that's ranked upon it is Florida State.
The ACC deft of ranked teams apparently, and Rutgers who

(12:59):
only play one ranked team and it's USC. Rutgers could
go like ten and two. Could you believe that? Well,
they have Nebraska on the schedules, keep it in mind,
and that'll be another ranked team by the time they
see them, I would bet. So there's a chance that
Rutgers and Nebraska that game could be two teams that
have one loss or two losses between.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
Them at that point. First college game Day will be
in Lincoln for Rutgers, yeah, and Nebraska. It's gonna happen. Wow,
I have no.

Speaker 1 (13:28):
Idea, but that'd be cool. Who when was the last
like Rutgers wasn't terrible? They made a bowl game last year? Yeah,
old Greg Schiano. Now he's back in an action, live
in a living color. Yeah. Yeah. Their schedule looks like Howard.
They play Howard, then Akron at Virginia Tech, who's not
ranked could be a little tricky, then Washington, who has
got completely gutted in the offseason, and then it's Nebraska

(13:50):
October the fifth. They both could be ranked at that
point if they both steamrolled all their opponents, or you know,
maybe maybe not, Who the heck knows, you know, it's
just it's interesting. Dang, it's crazy. Rutgers in Nebraska, sign
me up. Now, that's Big Ten football if I've ever
heard it. Rodgers in Nebraska. Speaking of you want to
be entertained. Next Thursday, we're going to be doing this

(14:10):
