Speaker 1 (00:00):
I guess one of the other things that I kind
of wanted to talk about was how, like, what are
we looking for in in life to provide us happiness.
I was on a two, like, like I said, two
week vacation. You kind of have a chance to like
sit back and you can kind of reflect and how
fun that was.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Now, do I want to travel for a living? I
don't think so. I think it's kind of cool. All
the cool places that people get to go.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
You can find those like travel bloggers and stuff that
you know, have YouTube channels and they're going to different
countries all the time, spending one, two, three weeks in
different spots, and then you know, kind of talking about
their travels, and it's it's helpful for somebody like us,
you know, who build our own vacations. But at the
same time, you know, it's kind of like, man, that's
a lot of travel, and I'm not nearly season enough

(00:46):
to feel like being on the go that much in
places I'm not familiar with makes sense. I was ready
to be home at the same time I'm watching people
fawn over moo dang, are you familiar with I'm gonna
say yes, but I'm actually not. I just you don't
want to want to be a part of the crowd,
you know, you want to be a cool kid. Yeah,

(01:06):
type in moo dang.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
How is that spelled? Moo should be the first thing
he pops up? Oh so, just the way you think
moo like a cow and dang like a ah dang. No,
it's d e ng. Well that okay, that I'm at
the wrong place. There's a tai restaurant in Reno, Nevada.
Spelled moo dang moo space da ng.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Yeah, tried d e ng because Americans are terrible with
spelling this though. All right, well this is like like
lou all Dang remember him? Yes, oh right right, yeah,
like oh yeah like him man mid range game. Ah,
they don't make him like that anymore. Great defense, good
length on the perimeter, you could guard the best player
on the other team. He was a good hand to
have around. Anyway you find moo dang, it's a it's

(01:48):
a hippopotamus. It is it is a pygmy hippopotamus. She's
ten weeks old. That's cue you see. You see photos
of her mm hmm, look at those rink ales and
you see her see her mouth open she's like always
screaming and trying to bite people.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
I relatable, Yeah, yeah, yeah, okay. She everybody loves her.
How could you not.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
She's so popular that they've had to put some restrictions
on who is going to and what you can bring
nearby into like near her enclosure because people are like
throwing stuff in there and like it's she's in Thailand.
This is not She's she's a pigmy baby pygmy hypnopotomus.
Incredibly cute. Now we've had America has had their fair

(02:25):
share of baby hippos as well. Remember Fiona the Premature,
a premium hippo. She was born like two or three
months early in the Cincinnati Zoo and surprised everybody and
they had to really nurse her to get her to
full strength. But she had a very spunky personality. And
now she's a full grown, healthy hippo over in the
Cincinnati Zoo and she's still like the super lovable.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
But she's big now, right, she's real Prima Donna.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
Yeah, she's very big, right, And this little baby is,
you know, capture the hearts and minds of people. I
wonder why that is? What do people see in moudang
that makes them happy, well, very cute. It's a tiny hippo.
What's not to love.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
The fat wrinkles helps, and just the general like constant
shimmer and glaze of the hippo. Yeah, they gotta stay
moist Yeah, what is the moisturizer routine of this baby hippo? Well,
has anyone talked about that she likes to get sprayed
in bathes They have to put give her baths and stuff.
And the reason being is because they secrete, like hippos

(03:23):
kind of secrete that shiny stuff that goes on their
on their skin. It kind of helps protect them.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
But if they're not like regularly like dipping themselves in water,
which sometimes baby hippos don't do a very good job,
bacteria can build up on their skin. And so her
keepers are constantly kind of making sure every hour or
two that they're spraying her down so she's not secreting
the stuff that's going to build up bacteria on her skin.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
I kid you not. The first article about Moo Dang
that popped up for me was Glamour magazine. Glamour Magazine
has an expos on a baby hippo, very de Moor
that's all I got. That baby hippo is very de more. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Yeah that now you're getting your summer twenty twenty four
memes across.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Better be careful with that one.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
And then SNL did a did a little thing skit?
Did I talk about it on this show? Maybe it
was the other show now you did earlier?

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (04:16):
Yeah, where you know Bo and Yang is dressed up
as Moo Dang the hippo and kind of channeling the
personality of Chapel Roone. Right, So there's a third like
major memeable person in this summer of twenty twenty four
that you know we can that's like.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
A meme burrito.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
Yeah, it's a layers of right meme burrito with a
very cute hippo right in the middle of it.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Yeah. What about her? Has made people happy? Joyful?

Speaker 1 (04:41):
It's not as divisive as you know, say a pop
star or you know, something stupid on TikTok.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
It's just a little hippo.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
How do we encapsulate the spirit of that into our
everyday lives? I find joy in a lot of things
that people would say, why are you talking about that?
Or why do you care about that so much?

Speaker 2 (05:01):
Because it makes me smile.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
And I don't want this to sound like I'm preaching.
I don't want this to sound like, you know, I'm
trying to do, you know, the whole tough guy routine
of like, Hey, you know what would be awesome is
if we all decided that we were going to, you know,
hold hands of see kumbaya. I don't want that to
be like I'm not trying to tell you that. But
I get a lot more joy in my life and
I feel happier being alive. Yeah, we can talk about

(05:25):
important stuff. Yeah, I care about like the upcoming election
and what our policies are. I care about like how
my neighborhood looks. I have my neighbor across the street
is moved. Somebody knew has bought the house. I don't
know who it is. I'm you know, a little concerned about,
like what kind of person's moving to our neighborhood. I
care about that kind of stuff, right, But I'm not
going to lose sleepover you know why, because I'm going
to watch videos of mood dang right, I'm going to

(05:45):
watch sports that for baseball game earlier, the Braves and Mets,
the game game one of this doubleheader where it was
back and forth. It was a crazy game. I had
fun just watching that in the commercial breaks, right, I
find things that put smile on my face.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
I like to make my wife happy.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
I have to go watch movies, TV shows, play games,
and I don't know, after being gone for two weeks
and not really thinking too much about a lot of
serious stuff, and you know, I'm trying to have as
much fun as possible. Learning about new cities I've never
been to, learning about a culture I've never been to.
That's the kind of thing for me that elevates to

(06:22):
the next level my happiness of knowing, yeah, I can
still care about stuff that's really important to me or
be concerned about different things, while at the same time
feeling very hopeful that this world is okay.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
There's plenty of.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
Great things that are going on around the world or
in our town. And I hope that we can kind
of over the next four weeks as we kind of
prepare for an election in four or five weeks or
whatever it is, and we have a big, you know,
vice presidential debate and stuff, You're going to have a
lot of people that are going to be spreading Hey,
there's going to be a lot of people that are
trying not to be tolerant of each other, each other's opinions,

(06:55):
each other's feelings, and I just feel like there's a
lot more to life than hating each other over politics.
We used to be able to talk to each other
through politics in different ways. Social media has kind of
exacerbated the ability of the uh trash talking that involves
that tribalism that politics has right now. But my hope
is that as a society we can find things that

(07:16):
make a smile to deviate ourselves from the norm of
the things that don't make a smile, like watching the
Chicago White Sox, for instance. I threw that in there
because they're my favorite baseball team and they've been very
unfun to watch this year either way.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Now that's a team that's been very to more very much.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
Boo, it's five. We'll wrap up the show next on
He's ready at eleven. Think kfab the most obscure team
that each conference essentially has played, And I found the
one they just made of and they did this today
of the Max schools, right, it's like Ball State, Kent State,
Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan. Stuff like that you got to
listen to some of these schools. Northern Illinois played a

(07:54):
team in nineteen hundred called Sandwich High School.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
There's a Sandwich High School probably so were in Illinois, and.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
There's a Sandwich High School in Illinois.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
Uh Akron played the akron YMCA. Miami of Ohio played
Cincinnati YMC. That wasn't that crazy. However, Central Michigan played
a team in nineteen oh seven called the Flint.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
Deaf Mutes.

Speaker 1 (08:17):
The Ohio Bobcats in eighteen ninety seven apparently played a
team called the Deaf and Dumb Institute.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
Woh, nope, that way.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
Where was cancel culture in eighteen ninety seven? That was
a thing, first of all, and they called it that.
I don't doubt it, to be honest with you, the
Flint Deaf Mutes. There are plenty of deaf people that
have played football. I mean, there's a deaf guy in
the replacements, remember that right tight end. He can't he
can't hear anything, so good player.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
So you know, surely you know in eighteen ninety seven,
the Deaf and Dumb Institute probably had, you know, people
who were playing football. But there's no doubt the call
at the Deaf and Dumb Institute, which is what they
probably called it back then.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
Who It's tough. Look. Eastern Michigan played the Junior Lawyers.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I don't know. There's there's All of
these graphics are actually really funny. There's always some fantastic
ones here. The most obscure team each of the Mountain
Western pac schools played. There's a couple of fantastic ones
and that includes multiple of them playing. Hiram Scott. Fresno

(09:30):
State played the Barbarian Club. I have no idea what
that is. Anyway, we had fun today. It was funn
to get back in the swing of things. We'll get
to plenty of news debate coverage tomorrow Vice Presidential Debate.
I'm actually going to be on location at Red Sports
Bar and grill Up. We'll tell you all about it
tomorrow afternoon on news radio eleven t kfa B

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
