Speaker 1 (00:00):
Somebody who make it quite the name for themselves, who's
got quite an interesting connection here to us in Omaha,
joining us on the phone line, making a big name
for himself on the voice. His name is Dreon. Dreon,
thanks so much for being a part of our show
and for calling us today.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Thank you, Thank you so much for having me. It's
a pleasure to be on. Thank you.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Yeah, no problem, man, All right, So I got before
we talk about Omaha and kind of your connection to
the area here, I saw the blind audition and earth
Wind and Fire, and I mean it was your incredible
vocal range. I think that immediately caught the attention of
the coaches. So how do you choose that song? And

(00:41):
what kind of was the process for learning about your
own vocal abilities and how people react to them.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Yeah, so, well, one of the big things about earthIn
and Fire, A special fun fact about them is that
I actually toured with them as an opening act, and
I've been too with them for the past three years,
and so you know, Shining Starr was one of those
you know songs for me that was just a personal
favorite in me working with them and working with the

(01:10):
Foster Care organization because it's the anthem of their foster
care organization as well, So it was a perfect fit
for this moment and this audition. Uh, and it definitely
spoke to the moment and to me and this moment
that I had to be able to share my gift
with the world. So, you know, almost it was almost

(01:30):
a no brainer working with the show picking that song
and choosing you know, Earth and and Fire to honor
them and pay tribute to them. And you know, one
of the things that has been a huge help for
me and discovering and finding my voice is studying people
like Philip Bailey from earthIn and Fire, and studying people
like Al Green and Mac Dwell and Michael Jackson and

(01:53):
Prince and Steve Wander, all of these great musicians and artists.
I really have created a system in which I call
the three eyes, which is imitation, inspiration, and then innovation.
So I, you know, I imitate and learn the artists
that I love, I take the inspiration from whatever they have,
and I kind of innovate it into my own and

(02:14):
kind of create my own found my own voice, and
I kind of have been able to build that from
there and present it to the world. You know, there's
nothing new under the sun, but there's always a new
you to present a new perspective. So that's kind of
how where I come from with it.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
Pretty awesome. We're speaking with Dreon, who you probably have
seen on The Voice as this has been an interesting
television show to follow, and I love the system that
they use. You know, it's very different than some of
the other singing competitions. So when you talk about, you know,
your vocal talents and abilities, what makes a show like
The Voice kind of where you wanted to kind of

(02:53):
pursue an opportunity And what about this experience so far
getting to meet and talk to and even be chosen
by somebody like Snoop Dogg. How has that kind of
affected the way that you know you feel about yourself
and your burgeoning career at this point.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Well, I definitely will say, you know, The Voice is
a very unique show, especially from all the other shows,
because you know, the first initial opportunity for you to
share your voice and your music with the world is hidden.
Your voice is the only thing that's highlighted. It's not
just about your stories, just about you know, you know

(03:33):
everything that you've been through, but it's about your talent
and for me, you know, I have I've studied at
Berkeley College of Music. I've studied music for many, many
many years, self taught and trained in educational institutions in conservatory,
and so I've put a lot of time and effort
and work into my craft and honing my craft, and

(03:56):
so the Voice was just a great outlet to be
able to present all of my talent. I've worked really
really hard at becoming of the artist and the musician
that I have UH, and then being able to present
that in front of icons and legends like Snoop and
Riba and Gwenn and Michael Uh. And we're sitting that

(04:16):
validation from them, you know, which is you know, it's
an incredible feeling. You know, I was able to get
a four chair turn. That means, you know, all of
them were wanting me and wanting to choose to work
with me, and and I had an opportunity to work
with them all and I ended up choosing Snoop Uh
just simply because you know, not only because of our
similar background, but I feel like he brings so much

(04:38):
more to the table as an artist and as a performer,
as an entrepreneur, and being able to push me beyond
just my talent for push me into my my stardom
and understanding you know who I am and having that
longevity in the industry. You know, it's just an incredible
feeling to work with these artists.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
So it wasn't just a chain that he was dangling
in front of them to try to get.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
No no, but you know it definitely it definitely so
sold the deal as well.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Speaking with three On, he is on Team Snoop on
the Voice this season. When they send out the information
about the people that are there, they talk about, you know,
their hometowns and certainly gets their attention when you see Omaha,
Nebraska next to somebody's hometown. So can you talk about
kind of your history and in your connection with the
Omaha area here drew on.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Yeah. So, I'm born and raised an Omaha, Nebraskan. I
grew up in Omaha. In North Omaha, I went to
Sunny Folk Elementary, I went to Morton Middle School, and
I graduated from Northwest High School. So I spent my
entire life in Omaha until I moved away to go

(05:49):
to college at Berkeley College of Music in Boston. But
everything that I've learned musically, everything that I've learned from life,
everything that I have gained as an artist and as
and creative has been from my time living and being
in Omaha. And I still come back very regularly to
perform and to be a part of the Omaha community

(06:12):
because it's still as a community that is near and
dear to my heart that my family is still there,
my supporters are still there, and I'm proud to be
from a city uh with such rich history musically, with
such rich history in general. Uh And I'm just super
uh you know, grateful, you know, and and and and
knowing how I started off, you know, as I said,

(06:33):
I grew up in North Omaha. Uh. I spent a
short period of time in foster care as a kid
as well in Omaha. Uh And it was some of
the most traumatic uh times in my life. And I
went through a lot of you know, difficult things. I
had a family and a village of people around me,
uh to help raise me and help you know, develop me.

(06:53):
And it actually has you know, uh uh you know
led me into as I said, working with Earth and Fire,
that foster care organization. The big opportunities that I have
had being on the Voice sharing my story and everything.
It all connects back to Omaha where everything started for me.
So for me, you know, it's the church scene where
I grew up and started to you know, learn my

(07:14):
craft as an artist as a singer. It's the jazz
and the R and B scene that you know in
the clubs where I would go and perform and watch
my uncles perform who have performed in many of the
bands in Omaha. And then also it's the educational piece
of it, as I've had many professors and teachers who
have invested into my career, into my music, into my

(07:37):
life to help me get to this point. So for me,
Omaha is always and forever home.

Speaker 1 (07:43):
I'd love to hear that. So Dreon on team Snoop

where it came from here in the Omaha, Nebraska area Dreon.
