Speaker 1 (00:00):
I want to get a little insight as to the

(00:01):
opponent for the last regular season matchup of the season
for the Huskers, and it's the Iowa Gye Insider for
CBS Sports and twenty four to seven Sports. His name
is David Icult. David, welcome to our show today.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Hey, what's going on? Man? Yeah, a little bit interesting
matchup here again, proud Husker alum here covering Iowa.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Wait, and you're from the you're a Nebraska guy.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
I am a Nebraska alum.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Wow, I didn't know that.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
I did not know you did not know that. That's interesting. Yeah,
I'm a Nebraska alum. I worked under Sean Callahan for
two years throughout my time in college. So it's uh, yeah,
this is like I said, it's a fun week for me.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
That's our guy. That's our guy, Sean Callahan. We'll talk
to Sean by the way, for those in the five
o'clock hour who want to listen to Husker Buzz, we'll
get his game pick and all that stuff. Since this
is our last day of the week on this show. Well, David,
we know that you've learned well then at this point
you know you're big into to the Iowa stuff. At
this point, can you hell, We've watched and I'm sure

(01:01):
there are a lot of Iowa fans that listen to
us across the Missouri River. How do you best describe
this football season? Because seven and four doesn't seem like
much to scoff at, But at the same time, there
have been quite a bit of trials and tribulations throughout
the year.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
I mean, I think this has been one of the
most unpredictable seasons in the Kirk Farens era, and I
think based on preseason expectations, it's been a disappointment because
I think this was a this should have been a
perennial college football playoff contender, and they failed up to
live up to that. At the same time, you look
at the offense, one of the best rushing attacks in
the nation, led by Doak Walker Award finalist officially in

(01:38):
Caleb Johnson, who, for my money's worth, is the best
running back in the Kirk Farns era. Sean Green probably
just behind him. The Caleb Johnson's been spectacular this season.
Iowa's offensive line finally looks like it was an old
school Iowa offensive line. Outside the game against the UCLA,
they've been very consistent this year. But at the same time,
I think this has been the most perplexed Iowa team

(02:01):
in a long time because quite frankly, I don't think
people know why Iowa failed to reach the expectations that
they had. You had eighteen returning starters, arguably the best
linebacker in the nation in Jay Higgins, who was an
absolute snub for the Buckets Award, which goes the nation's
stop linebacker. They'd Nick Jackson, Sebastian Cashro, playmakers on both

(02:22):
sides of the football, and Iowa's been a tale of
two teams. When they've been at home, they've been averaging
almost forty points the game in conference play. When they've
been on the road, the defense can't stop anybody, and
as the offense is not as consistent. So again, I
think there's certainly some talent on this Iowa team, specifically
up front and in the backfield is Caleb Johnson. But

(02:42):
it has just been probably the weirdest season I've covered
in a while when it comes to Iowa, because last season,
I think, you know, Iowa won ten games, but we
knew who they were, we just didn't know how they
won games, right, But this season they've just been two
different teams at times. I think, yeah, and no doubt.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
We're speaking to David Eichel, who's an iowahau Keye insider
for twenty four to seven Sports and CBS Sports. You
mentioned the running attack and Caleb Johnson is he's definitely.
I mean, he's gonna eclipse fifteen hundred yards this season
and he's going to be the focal point of this offense.
But a lot of that is going to also deal
with who's going to be playing quarterback, because iways had

(03:25):
a lot of ebbs and flows about the health of
certain quarterbacks and also the effectiveness of certain quarterbacks. Jackson Stratton,
who started the season I think is the fourth string
quarterback and was really kind of moonlighting more as a
linebacker during practice, ends up getting his first start of
the year against Maryland last week and that didn't go
too poorly. Is he in line to start here or

(03:46):
is this going to be the return of Kate macnamaar.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
Yeah, So we just got done with Kirk Farns about
an hour and a half ago, and Jackson Stratton is
going to be the starting quarterback. There was a couple
of positive updates though, and as Kirk Farrens said that
Brendan soul and Kate have her turn to practice now again,
howie fishing are they? How healthy are they? We don't know,
because quite frankly, I have a hard time believing right
now that Brendan Sulden's ankle is one hundred percent. But

(04:12):
I do know that Day's been thrilled with the way
he has rehabbed him, in the progress he's made. And
obviously we've heard the behind the scenes stuff with Cad
McNamara and how big of a question mark that is.
But right now I think he has a role with
what's working, and that's Jackson Stratton, boy out of California,
preferred walk on transfer via Colorado State. I thought he

(04:33):
performed adequately last week. I thought he played very well.
I thought it was a great game plan by Tim Wester.
Let Caleb Johnson get thirty five carries, let Kamari Molton
get twelve carries, only throw fourteen passes. Jackson completed ten
of fourteen for seventy six yards, did not turn the
ball over in Iowa. Dominate upfront. But I also think

(04:55):
this is not Maryland's defensive line. This Nebraska defensive line
led by ty Rob who is a really unbelievable player.
Feels like he's been there as long as Jordan Bohannon
played at Iowa for Iowa basketball. But he's a spectacular player,
and Kurt gave him a shout out during the interview.
But yes, Jackson Striton is going to be the starting quarterback.
As far as everything else in the batting order, Kurt

(05:18):
said that he has to have a couple of talks
with his staff to say who's going to be the backup,
who's going to be the emergency quarterback. So Jackson's a
number one. After that, Emery, I gotta tell you your
guess is probably as good as mine.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
You love to see that, So David, this game, it's
a rivalry game. Iowa has been excellent at Kennick. They
have scored forty plus points and I think four home
games this year, which you know, if you told an
Iowa fan that preseason, they'd say absolutely, give that to
me all day, every day and twice on Sunday. But
i Nebraska has gotten to bull eligibility, which I know

(05:52):
for Nebraska fans that's a really important factor for this
team taking the next step. But if Nebraska were to
win this game, both teams to be sitting at seven
and five, and now all of a sudden it becomes okay,
so who would be the preferred team to go to
certain bowl games? What is the kind of the talk
about how this game, how much this game means to Iowa,

(06:13):
because they really have owned this rivalry for the better
part of the last decade.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
So I think there's two separate points that you're making there.
And I think Iowa fans typically travel great for bowl games.
They've been very loyal in the past. It's a nice
chance to escape more than likely the very cold weather
that comes in around that time if they go to
Florida or California or something. I think if on a
bowl game, I'm taking Nebraska. If they're both seven and five.

(06:37):
I mean, you're talking about a team, and I mean
this respectfully. Right, they're talking about a team that just
stormed the field after being a five and five Wisconsin team.
They are itching to go to a bowl game. They're
itching for the extra practices. I think they're going to
be very excited to go to potentially warm weather and
escape that Nebraska colt because this game this Friday is
going to be absolutely freezing. I cannot wait to sit

(06:58):
in a toasty press spot apologizing for it. As far
as Iowa goes, I think they're more focused on obviously,
we're taking the Heroes trophy and sending out the seniors
in a good way because as disappointing of a season
as it has been. You look at guys across the board,
right like Luke lahe has been a tremendous team leader
for Iowa. Logan Jones as a team captain at center,

(07:21):
He's been a big leader for this team. You look
at Jay Hagens, who I think is an all time
Iowa Hawk guy, and what a success of you know,
Jack Campbell, because we all great Jack Campbell is and
Jay Higgins win there and the standard did not drop.
Nick Jackson, the transfer linebacker from Virginia who has a
sixth season of eligibility and college football's second all time

(07:43):
leading tackler. Now there's a lot of really good seniors.
I think they want to send him out the right way.
Being a night game in Kinnick Stadium, I think the
atmosphere is going to be pretty juiced up. But I
will say I think they would have had an extra
little bit of spice on it emery. If Nebraska had
lost Wisconsin, Iowa had chance to keep Nebraska out of
out of a bowl game again. I think that would

(08:03):
have really ramped up the environment as well. So I
think it's gonna be a lot of fun and it
just depends on what Iowa team shows up. But Nebraska's
kind of showing some new life under new offensive coordinator
Dana Holgerson.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
Yeah, that's no doubt. He is definitely changing how you
feel about watching this offense. With forty four up against
Wisconsin last week. Okay, David, let's go ahead and talk
turkey here. We have a six point spread. You over
understanding at thirty nine and a half, the Vegas feels
like this is going to be pretty low scoring affairs
it typically is most years. What do you think happens here?

(08:36):
And what do you think the final score is going
to look like?

Speaker 2 (08:38):
Man, I gotta tell you I'm going to change my
mind about eight more times throughout the course of the week. Right.
I truly think this is a toss up game because
I don't know what Iowa team shows up. I don't
know if Nebraska now feels like there's a weight lifted
off their program and they can play more free I'm
curious how Dylan Rayola is going to respond to that
sort of environment, that cold weather. This senior kind of

(08:59):
led to defense. Despite you know, them being a quote
unquote disappointment, they've still been a relatively good defense this year.
I'm probably giving Iowa a flight. I know it's maybe
a cop out. I'm giving Iowa a three point advantage.
I'm not going to go as far as it's a
game winning field goal. I think if you go back
to the Iowa State game this season, Iowa cannot stop

(09:20):
Iowa State and they have the game winning field goal.
I think Dylan Rayola is going to have the ball.
It's a chance to tie the game. I think Iowa's
defense gets that stop and they send the seniors out
the right way. So I'm going to go a little
bit of a weird score here. I'm going to go
Iowa twenty three Nebraska twenty. I think they hit the over,

(09:40):
but just barely. You know.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
I love the idea of that game kind of playing
out that way because that would really juice up these
two fan bases in this rivalry that exists currently, especially
with both teams bowl bound for the first time in
eight years. Pretty awesome stuff. David Iicolet always great stuff,
Thanks for talking with us today. Is the Hawkeye Insider
of twenty four seven Sports and CBS Sports. Enjoy that

(10:03):
