Speaker 1 (00:00):
We thank you as always for being a part of
our show, and we love returning the favor by telling
you about other shows that are happening in the community,
and that includes the Christmas celebration concert from our friends
at the Omaha Symphony and being a part of that.
And joining us here in the studio is Tarah Cowhard.
She is the executive director of Residence and she's in
the studio with us. Tarah, thanks so much for stopping

(00:21):
in with us today.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Thanks em Marie, and great to be here.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Okay, residance, Yes, there may be some people in Omaha.
It's like, can you explain that a little bit more?
So I'm going to ask can you explain residence a
little bit more for us too.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
So we are a vocal ensemble of multi talented professional
singers and so we're based here in the Omaha area
and we believe that all kinds of vocal and choral
music is at its heart about sharing stories so different
than that of an orchestra player. We have unique opportunity
to share music through words and lyrics and that's kind

(00:54):
of what we focus on and we do a variety
of different things. So not for this coming show, but
we have done things like Mozart Requiem and big opportunities
like that. But we're really excited to be back with
the Omaha Symphony this year and be there moving ensemble
in their production for the Christmas celebration.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
This is, you know, kind of a marriage of a
show that involves a lot of different types of art.
And we're kind of talking off the air about the
versatility of music in just how different one musical show
that you see or production and then you can go
a couple weeks later and see the exact same people

(01:32):
doing something completely different, which is really something magical. How
do you find your talent? Because you talked about this,
you know this is people do this for a living.
They have the ability to do this for a living.
How does that kind of work on the vocal side
of things?

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Yeah, sure, So our singers are all in the Omaha
area and they come in in the audition for us,
and it's kind of a part time gig, So they
moonlight as professional singers at night, but they might be
daytime teachers, or they might be working in technolog or
other areas, and this is something that they do to
fill the time when they're not on those daytime jobs

(02:05):
really cool.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
So I'm looking at this the Omaha Symphony Christmas Celebration.
The shows start actually tomorrow at seven thirty pm at
the Holland Center and then they run throughout the weekend Thursday, Friday,
Saturday two shows two and seven thirty, and then two
and seven thirty again on Sunday. So six different performances
of this tell me a little bit about what we

(02:27):
can expect with this Christmas celebration with the Symphony.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Yes, absolutely, we have some favorites that we come back
to every year. So be a Santa, the Santa kick line.
We're involved in that, so watch for us out there.
And then we all love to sing a lot of
the new music that my star Richardson composes. This year,
he arranged for us the Pentatonics remix of Mariah Carey's
Where Are You Christmas? Oh My, We're so excited about

(02:51):
that one. And then Parker Sse he's the director. He
is putting us in a fun version of Jingle Bells.
So we'll be dancing our way there on the stage
for that one.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
So so cool. Okay, So we're talking to Tara Cowherd,
the executive director of residence. This the these shows, you know,
you're trying to convey not just a message of you know,
great music and talent, but people want to feel that
Christmas spirit kind of just pouring off the stage.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
You know.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
This may not be a great example of what we're
talking about, but I was in Branson about this time
last year and they do Christmas very like over the
top down there. But there's something about song. There's something
about music that can get people in the mood more
than anybody like any other thing that you could possibly
think of, you know, whether it's the Christmas movies or

(03:41):
reading something or seeing decorations, there's something about the music
that really can put people there. Can you kind of
talk about from your guys's perspective, and this could be
either the instrumentation or what you guys do as singers
and why it's so powerful to get people kind of
in that place of you know, this is one of
the great times of the year.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Yeah, I would say that unique to our opportunity to
tell a story is the words in the lyrics. And
this show is interesting because it's kind of a everything
in the kitchen sink opportunity. So how do you find Christmas?
Do you find it by singing hymns, you know, like
you do in the church, or do you find it
by listening to the music on the radio, or do

(04:24):
you find it by seeing little kids doing fun little
pieces on their violin. You know, we have everything that
you can imagine, and it's something for everyone so that
they can find Christmas in different ways, and it makes
it really exciting, so that anyone in the space, anyone
in the house will have the opportunity to enjoy it
and maybe even hear something new that they haven't experienced before.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
It certainly to me one of the and we were
talking as well, I do have a little bit of
a background in music. There's something about the high quality
nature of what we're talking about, especially when you know,
you talk about kind of a unique arrangement that is
only going to be heard with the Omaha Symphony here

(05:05):
for a song that many people are going to immediately recognize.
What about this symphony, in this group in Omaha makes
this such a special, you know environment because it is
renowned throughout the Midwest and the country. That we have
a really big gym in the symphony and also all
of the moving parts around the symphony that is able

(05:26):
to perform the entire season long. It's not just you know,
a concert here or there, it's it's all year long.
How can you best describe what we have in Omaha
in that culture?

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Yes, absolutely so we have. All of these players are
from our own community, which is so super unique, and
they use the opportunity to come in and play all
different types of music and they, you know, I often
hear from a lot of different guest artists and Broadway
directors and maybe guest conductors. They come in and say, wow,

(05:58):
omahas has something that is very unique, and they have
the quality of the players is not often heard in
other orchestras. And even mister Richardson has been around to
a lot of different orchestras and we'll come back home
and say this is a really special place. But along
the same lines too, they have high expectations for all
of the players and even all the singers, so resonance

(06:19):
in particular. We show up and we're treated just like
the Broadway singers that are on the stage. They expect
us to act just as high quality as they are
on the stage, which makes it really exciting and something
to work hard towards to put on.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
A good show, and it comes across when you watch,
you are a part of something. It's not just I'm
here to watch and perform the ninth Symphony or something
like that. Right, It is an immersive experience, especially when
you talk about Christmas music that people are going to
be able to recognize. Do you have a favorite tune
or something that you're excited like what part of what

(06:54):
the show? Not to give away big spoiler alerts, but
is there something that you think you're very excited to
see throughout the weekend here as part of the Christmas celebration. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
I love so many elements of the show, like the
Christmas Chorus in the back they're from our community, the
singers back there. One of my favorites is the one
that takes the least amount of rehearsal possible, which is
the sleigh ride piece that mister Richardson gets up there
with the kids from the community so they have their
chance to come on stage be part of the whole experience,
and he puts on a good show. So I love
watching that backstage.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
That's going to be awesome. Now, I will say this
that you can buy tickets for this show and they
are available Omahasymphony dot org is the website. Is there
an easier way or is there a way for people
to get themselves lined up to see one of the
six showings of the Christmas Celebration with the Symphony.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
That's a great way. And also there's a lot of
social media content out there. You can catch them sneak previews.
There's a lot of little clips that our PR team
is put together showing what some of the backstage experience
and some of the rehearsal process looks like. I think
that's fascinating to see how a show goes up and
it's really entertaining. So the Omaha Symphony team has done
a really great job. And of course, if you want

(07:59):
to learn more about resonance, you can go to resonance
Voices dot org and you'll hear about more of what
we do. In addition to what we're doing this week,
like next week we're singing Home Alone with the Symphony,
So we just have a lot going on. We're excited
to partner.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
That is awesome and Home Alone For anybody that I
don't know the music's Home Alone, yeah you do. If
we started playing it right now, you'd be like, oh, Okay, yeah,
actually I do know that, and it is so uniquely
associated with Christmas as well. So the Big Omaha Symphony
Christmas Celebration, with the help of Resonance for the Omaha Symphony,
going to be taking place Tomorrow night at the Holland

(08:33):
Center seven thirty pm, Friday night at seven thirty pm,
and then both Saturday and Sunday two pm in the afternoon,
seven thirty at night. Tara Cowherd with Residence, thank you
so much for stopping buy and giving us this information.
It's going to be just an incredible show and I'm
so excited to have people come out and enjoy it
and get themselves in the Christmas spirit. Yes.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
Thanks Emory.
