Speaker 1 (00:00):
Nebraska has got a lot of cool things going on,
preparing for a bowl game, having to prepare for a
Final four in volleyball as well, which that's not too
new of a thing. And I figured let's knock a
bunch of these out with our buddy, our Husker insider,
Sean Callahan, who is joining us here on the phone
line today. Sean, welcome to the show.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
How you doing, Hey, I'm doing great. It's always a
busy time of year. We got one more week of
on campus transfer portal visitors before thing can kind of
quiet down here for a little bit at least.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Yeah, and that's exactly where I want to start, Sean.
The transfer portal is just running rampant all over the
entire country. We're seeing the biggest I think the biggest
issue with this is the timing of it before all
the bowl games and all that Jazz and I understand
trying to give these kids as much time as possible
to make a decision of where they want to play

(00:52):
next year. But we're seeing even schools that are in
the playoff having to deal with these transfer portal issues.
As the back quarterback for Penn State and a guy
who actually has gotten quite a bit of playing time
this year. Had to basically drop into the portal before
they even play their playoff game because this is his
one chance if he wants to play somewhere else next year.
He's kind of got a dip. What can you like?

(01:13):
How can you best describe what the transfer portal looks
like and why this problem is going crazy? There's a
school that had to drop out of a bowl earlier
over the weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Well, you know, the big reason why it has to
be now, and you know is school. I mean, these
kids have to make these decisions right now so they
can enroll into a new college starting in January. And
you know, for them to have the best path for success,
they have to begin their new place in January, go
through winter and spring. And that's why it has to
happen right now. I mean, there's no really easy way

(01:45):
to do it unfortunately. So what you're seeing though, is
a lot of players on Nebraska. We've seen four or
five six guys recently make commitments to different power for programs.
McKay Bayer announced today he's going to Missouri, Daniel Kalin
the quarterbacks going to Virginia, prince Llo Uman Yellen's going
to Old Miss, Jamari Butler is going to LSU, James

(02:08):
Williams expected to go to Florida State, Stephan Thompson's gone
to Florida State. And you know, for some of these guys,
if you're a high market free agent, a veteran player
with proven snap counts, there is a massive market for
you right now because everybody's got this money now, especially
with the rep share of money coming into college football.
You know, you're seeing, you know, a guy get a

(02:30):
max sixth figure, really healthy six figure deal, or in
some cases, I mean there's guys that could be getting
over a million dollar offers to go play somewhere, depending
on the position they play. And you know, generally those
guys that are that kind of money are are maybe
a left tackle, maybe a quarterback, maybe a rush a
rush edge rusher. You know, and it's just gone wild.

(02:51):
I mean, there's a guy in Lincoln right now, Isaiah
World from Nevada. Nobody probably in Nebraska knows who he
is or knew who he was, but he's the hottest
tackle in the transfer portal, one of the hottest. He's
six's eight three ten, didn't give up a single fack
this year. And eight hundred and thirty six snaps at
Nevada and they were a bad team that didn't win
a game at the conference, but didn't allow a fack

(03:13):
in four hundred and thirty pass plays. And Nebraska's on him,
Ohio State's on him, Oregan's on him, a and M's
on him. And he's regarded to be probably a million
dollar player in the portal right now because he's a
left tackle that could come in and fill a huge
need for a lot of programs. And yeah, that's what's
going on right now everywhere, as there's probably about one
hundred players in the country that everyone's fighting over for

(03:36):
and the price tags on these players has definitely gotten
pretty wild.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Well, it's grew crazy as it's the fans and they're
collectives basically that are having to fork that money over
for the most part until you know, just until they
get this twenty two million dollars payroll or whatever lined
up for these schools. It hurts my head to think
about college sports being so professional at this level, but
this is the nature of the Beast Nebraska, as you mentioned,
preparing for not just the transfers, but also for a ballgame.

(04:03):
And are there any additional players that we don't expect
to be available for this game because of the transfer portal.
And how is the coaching staff do you think preparing
for this game? Because we have seen in recent years,
since you know, the football playoff kind of became a thing,
and opt outs became a thing, and transfer portal became
a thing that more and more coaches are kind of
going to some interesting fun packages and making sure a

(04:27):
lot of these guys get a little playing time in
these games.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah, I mean, I think you've Nebraska they want to
win the game. I mean it's a big deal to
win the game, to move this program forward with seven
wins and their slight favorites right now. This week they
began their practices for Boston College kind of with the
full schedule of Boston College prep. And then they'll leave
on Monday, a week from today. And yes, I don't

(04:52):
know if Nebraska is going to do anything out of
the norm or try to get too cute with what
they do for this game. But you know, as far
as the portal players, none of those guys from Nebraska
were going to play in the Bowl that I know of,
unless they decided to come back like Emma Johnson, we're
playing the Bowl, but yeah, nobody that's injured the portal
is expected to play, and there have been no opt

(05:12):
outs yet either. I know a lot of people wondered
about Tyra Robinson. Maybe Nashaw mocker Jim Rose asked me
this morning that they're practicing and playing in Boston College
as the ACC player of the year on defense, the
leading pass rusher in terms of facts in the country,
and he's right now playing in a pin stri ble.
So we haven't seen the opt outs like maybe at

(05:33):
the level people thought at this point anywhere other than
guys that have just gone into transfer portal.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
Speaking with Sean Callahany's or Husker Insider, news that broke
later in the morning was that Nebraska will be playing
their season opener against Cincinnati next year in Arrowhead at
Gay Half Field in Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. So
a neutral site game against the power for opponent in Cincinnati.

(05:59):
How did this all come about in y Arrowhead?

Speaker 2 (06:03):
Yeah, first of all, you need to bring the show
down there that I'm making that call right now that
you will be down in Kansas City for that broadcast
on Thursday.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Well, heck yeah, let's sign me up. Let's get down
there right now.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Yeah, it's a no brainer. We can do like a
Husker fan pre game down in the parking lot or
some but Cincinnati needs money, that's the long and short
of it. So they had moved the game from their
home stadium to Lucas Oil and they had projected that
they were going to make two million dollars by having
the game at Lucas Oil Stadium. Their regular stadium only

(06:37):
seats thirty eight thousand, and they don't make that kind
of money on a regular home game. And with revenue
sharing and all the dollars they need to come up with,
they need to find new dollars. Well, Arrowhead contacted them,
not Nebraska, and they weren't involved. Arrowhead Stadium said, hey,
we want to call this game. We would like to
move your game in Lucas Oil Stadium to Arrowhead Stadium,
and we will pay you a guarantee no matter how

(07:00):
many people attend two and a half million dollars. And
then once you cross the ticket threshold, you know you
can make more where they can make up boards to
six million dollars, but they safely project they're going to
clear four million on this game versus two by having
an arrowhead, and you know, they get seventy five percent
of the ticket sale. It's their home game. Now, if

(07:23):
you're listening and you're asking when win tickets, one guy,
get them tomorrow. They're on Ticketmaster. By the way, they're
on Huskers dot com. They're not on Cincinnati's website. You
have to buy them on Ticketmaster or through the Chief's website,
which will take you a ticket Master and there's a
pre sale code. If you're a Husker season ticket holder.
Even if you're a ticket over basketball, you got the

(07:44):
code because we don't have football tickets, but we have
basketball tickets in my house. And you know, it's just
one of those codes that everybody will have and you
can get on and get it tomorrow. Otherwise Wednesday, general
public will go on sale. So you know, great Christmas gift.
I'm sure there'll be a lot of tickets Kansas City
in people's stockings on Christmas because it is going to

(08:05):
be exciting. I'm interested every how many Nebraska fans will go.
Will that number be? Can they fill arrowhead? How close
can they get to filling arrowhead? Seventy six or seventy
five thousand or whatever the number is, is a sellout there.
I think safely it'll get over sixty. As a matter
of can they get in the seventies and then fill
that place up.

Speaker 1 (08:26):
Well, One thing I do know is Iowa State went
down there and they brought a huge contingent to Arrowhead
because Kansas was playing their home games at Arrowhead this
past year while they renovate their field. They didn't sell
it out, but it certainly was just a great time.
I know a lot of Cyclone fans went down there
and had a great time at an NFL stadium for
a college football game. This is certainly a treat if

(08:47):
you're a Nebraska fan, especially since he didn't lose the
home game. Now I have to before I get you
out of here, Sean, we have to talk about volleyball
because later this week Nebraska is going to be playing
in the final four of the volleyball tournament in Louisville,
and they'll they were close. They were one set away
from taking on Creighton, which would have just been insane,
but Creighton eventually succumbed to a very good Penn State

(09:08):
team that's already beat Nebraska. Here, there's a lot of
legacies on the line. I mean, this is the first
time I think they said in fifteen or sixteen years
since they had all four one seeds actually make it
into the Final four. So you have the home team
of Louisville there, you have pitt that's going to be there.
They've been the number one team for most of the season.
You have Nebraska, and you have Penn State. What can

(09:29):
you say about this Final four and what that Thursday
matchup is going to look like for the Huskers.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
Yeah, it's rejected to start at eight point thirty, but
it could end up being later depending on how the
first match goes. And you know that these are going
to be some four or five set thrillers in most cases.
But you know, we almost got two Nebraska teams. Instead,
they'll get two Pennsylvania teams. They're Pittsburgh and Penn State.
But I think we've all been gearing up at wanting
to see that Nebraska Pittsburgh match and obviously the rematch

(09:57):
of Penn State. Nebraska on a neutral court day was
able to win that game in Happy Valley this year earlier,
but now on a neutral floor, and I do think
there'll be a lot more Nebraska fans on that venue.
But you know, the scary thing is that Louisville makes
the finals. It's a home game for Louisville. Oh match
for Louisville that they can get by Pittsburgh. So there's
a lot of storylines. Danny Buss Boom Kelly, the head

(10:19):
coach of Louisville, a former Husker volleyball player, and she's
married to Lane Kelly, former Nebraska football player who played
at Creighton Prep here at ol Mahll. You know, a
lot of people think she could be at one day,
some day John Cook's successor as the next head coach
when John Cook does ever decide to retire. But yeah,
you've got Penn State, who has a couple at Nebraska

(10:40):
transfers on their lineup. You know, there's just so many
angles here in Pittsburgh's kind of been this team that
everyone just says them in the number one team all year,
even though Nebraska has arguably more impressive wins. But I
think the way Pittsburgh has won has been impressive. They've
been dominant, and the metrics and some of the other
things are why they're number one over Nebraska. And hopefully

(11:02):
we get to see that match play out.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
Yeah, and Thursday is going to be the day that
Creighton Penn State match last night was thrilling. I feel
bad for the Blue Days because they were so close
to tasting victory and getting to the final four, which
would have been just insane for them to play Nebraska
in the semi finals. But it is a heavyweight battle
in both of the semis and of course we're going
to be paying close attention to that on Thursday. Sean Callahan,
our Husker insider, I'm going to get to work on

(11:25):
getting our show down there for that Thursday game next August.
All right, if you planted the sea, Sean, well.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
Hi, do you got HIV in candy? You can get
some kind of high V tailgates. I'm already coming up
with the sales idea. Could Hive do a big tailgate
party sponsorship Kansas City, Omaha High V Boom do it?

Speaker 1 (11:42):
Hey, you know what, I'm just going to take this
podcast of this interview. I'm going to package it up
and send it to the powers that be and we're
going to get this thing on the ground. We're going
to get off front and I appreciate it. Sean, thanks
so much. We'll talk soon. Hey, thanks every I gotta
love that. Are you in? Are you willing to?

Speaker 2 (11:58):
You know?

Speaker 1 (11:59):
You better believe it. I mean, let's start making our plans. Yeah.
August twenty eighth, twenty twenty five, Arrowhead, Kansas City Huskers, Bearcats,
Let's do it three twenty more on the Way News
Radio eleven ten KFAB and Maurice Sunger on News Radio
eleven ten KFAB. I want to say as blutiy as

(12:22):
I can, but it's just difficult to talk about. But
the school shooter situation, as more information comes out, there
was nothing new that was discovered outside of somebody from
the school that Christian School K through twelve Christian school
that was private by the way, handgun was recovered and
with someone from within the school that as this development
was happening, just shy of eleven am this morning, they

(12:42):
sent a call out to police fire. They dispatched very quickly,
within ten to fifteen minutes. Everybody was basically there in
Madison with first responders, but the shooter had killed two
people already, six others injured. They ended their own life.
This is a person that they did not identify other
than saying it was a teenage student from the school.
It's a Christian school. I don't even know what to
say beyond that, if more information does leak out today,

(13:05):
we will give that to you. I would imagine we'll
learn more by tomorrow three three twenty five. Sorry, And
one thing that he just wanted to mention quickly. This
is not something I need to harp on. But Matt,
I have a Sunday ritual. You know what my Sunday
ritual is what I like to sit and watch football. Okay,
but I watched the Red Zone channel. Sometimes I'll get
a second TV and bring it into my living room

(13:28):
so I can say that my pajamas on the couch
all day, and if the Bears are playing or there's
a single game that I'm paying close attention to, I'll
have that on one TV while the big TV's got
Red Zone. I like to watch Red Zone. You know
what Red Zones calling card is? What seven hours of
commercial free football. You'll never guess which showed up on
Red Zone today or yesterday? A commercial He started the

(13:51):
show My Guy, My Guy, Scott Hanson. I like Scott Hanson,
great broadcaster, and he also happened to be you know,
on the Olympics. Coverage and stuff for NBC. He's great dude, Like,
I just love following him on social media. He's just
a he's a lot of positive. He's nothing but positive energy. Okay,

(14:12):
with that being said, he started by saying seven hours
of red zone football, and I was like, wait a second.
That hit the ear strangely, what's that all about? Four
different times over those seven hours of allegedly commercial free football,
which I pay. You know, I have the sports package

(14:32):
on YouTube TV. It's like ten dollars extra a month.
It's not putting me out of you know, commission on this,
but you know it is still like, hey, I pay
ten extra dollars a month. This is the chief reason
why I do that. Don't show me commercials. This is
like like this the eighteen weeks of the NFL season
I get to watch on red zone. Those are a
true highlight for me. Let me enjoy it the best
I can. Quit pestering me with that, you know, And

(14:54):
they have some sponsored elements of what's going on there,
right like this is a thing brought to you by
draft gings. Here's all these and everything. It's like a
part of the thing. It doesn't matter, Like it doesn't
make that much of a difference to me. Well, there
were four fifteen second ads that they went split screen.
You could see the action on one side the commercial
and the commercials audio played on the left side of

(15:15):
the screen. And I was like, that's new. It jarred me.
Happened four times. You might be saying, Emory, that's sixty
seconds of commercials. What are you complaining about. That's nothing
over seven hours. This was the one thing that I had,
the one thing my ritual, and I don't want commercials

(15:36):
leaking into my punch bowl here. Okay, So yeah, I
was peeved, and this is just the beginning, That's what
I'm saying. Apparently, NFL Media confirmed that there was a
tech This was basically a test run for commercials which
could happen in twenty twenty five. But people on social

(15:56):
media are going nuts about this, including at Scott Hands
and I know it wasn't his call, but he's having
to eat it, he really is. So we'll see what
the reaction is to this, because they're going to have
to address it because it's everywhere on social media.

Speaker 3 (16:10):
Oh and they're playing it very well. They're doing it
by the book, right, They're making it seem like it
was a trial, and it's not going to happen till
next year, and it's just a little bit. You can
get used to just a little bit. By this time,
maybe one or two years from now, you'll be very
used to seeing commercials.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
I'm no longer subscribing. I can't say that. I very
well may still subscribe, but I might just end up,
you know, rolling down the hill to my nearest sports
bar and just sit and watch all the games on
the screens and not miss anything there either. That's out.

Speaker 3 (16:43):
That's been my money on beer instead. I think you
did right. That's kind of just nailing it right there.
I mean, if they're going to make you watch a
bunch of commercials, then what's the better experience at that point.

Speaker 1 (16:53):
Yeah, So screw to you guys, NFL Red Zone trying
to screw with my Sunday ritual. We'll see what the
fallout is. I'll keep you posted. Three twenty nine, we
come back. We got to talk about the issue of
Friday Night and how the entire city of Omaha was
basically an ice rink. We'll do that next on news
radio eleven ten KFAB and Marie's Songer on news radio

(17:15):
eleven ten kfab
