Speaker 1 (00:00):
There's a lot of other things going on in the
world today, especially if you are in Omaha, and one
of those things is very exciting and very lighthearted as
the Omaha Mavericks basketball team men's basketball over there at
UNO about to take on Kansas City tonight and what
will be a nationally televised game, and we're joined by

(00:21):
head coach Chris crutchfeld Field joining us on the show today. Coach,
as always a very big appreciative for you to be
a part of our show today. Thanks for calling in.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Hey, Amrick, thanks for having me on.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Okay, So, I guess the first thing, Coach we got
to talk about is this Mavericks team. You've been here
for just a couple of seasons and you're trying to
build something here in the Summit League. We know about
the hockey team and the volleyball team got elevated to
quite a big level last year when they played against
Nebraska and the largest attended women's sporting of it in

(00:55):
the history of the world. But you guys are doing
some great stuff over there at UNO for men's basketball.
Tell me about this team that you've built, Well.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
It started off with you. We have some guys that
have been our program then for almost three years now,
and those are the core guys that we've kind of
built this thing around. We lost Frankie Fitdler, of course
the transfer pool. He was supposed to be a part
of this group that we knew by year or year

(01:24):
three or year fourth. We kept this group together, we
will have a chance to contend for a conference championship.
Nothing is guaranteed, but we have some older guys. We
got four seniors and five juniors on the team, and
five of those guys all those nine have played in
the summer league and played a lot of minutes for us.

(01:44):
So we got a good Nicholas. We added a three pieces.
We're athletic, we got some guys that can shoot it,
and we're excited about where we are. We got off
to a slow start and then on con and I
think we're starting to get our footing right now and
starting to play well and play with confidence. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
What a crazy non conference schedule that you guys had.
You played very well against some really tough teams, and
the last non conference game, one of the last non
conference games that you played on the road, was against
one of the title favorites. Over their names in Iowa State.
So can you tell me about the non conference and
what the benefits are for a team like yours to

(02:22):
kind of be battle tested before you get into conference action.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
And that's the word, the same word that I use.
Emory was battle tested with our guys, and I told
them because we put you through a gauntlet, and especially
in November, we had seven seven straight road games, and
you normally never try to plan that out that way,
but it happened just because there's some facilities concerns and

(02:46):
things like that. But we was very competitive in all
those games. You take out Iowa State, but it was
very competitive. I thought we learned a lot about our team.
We learned a lot about who we are, and I
think they benefited from being on the road and being
with each other. I think our chemistry is great. And

(03:08):
now I think going on the road like we did
past weekend North Dakota, I think road games don't face
those guys anymore. So we're excited to be back home
tonight and against a really, really good Kansas City team.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Yeah. So we're talking right now to Chris Crutchfield, who's
the head coach for men's basketball at the University of
Nebraska Omaha, the MAVs hosting Kansas City tonight. Your guys
are on a four game win streak, including those two
games you mentioned on the road against North Dakota and
North Dakota State, and tonight. It's got some additional significance
is for the first time we're going to have a

(03:43):
nationally televised game in Baxter Arena for men's basketball. As
you're taking on the ruse, what does this mean to
you as somebody who's got a history with this program
and what you're trying to build here while you guys
are trying not just to contend for the Summit League
championship throughout this year, but also to put a spotlight
on the men's basketball program at you and.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
L No doubt, no doubt. I think anytime you can
get a national televised game and your arena and there's
something that hadn't been done before, I think it's just
I think it's two those to our administration, to our league.
Now we're on the national stage where people can see.
If people didn't know anything about omahall basketball, we have
a chance now to kind and show them and let

(04:27):
them take a peek into our program and take a
peek into our university and we're excited about that. And
now we just got to get focused and try to
put on try to try to play well tonight, and
that's the most important thing. But it's exciting. It's exciting
to have a game in your arena and that that's
the national audiens canna be able to see you.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
Uh, coach when you talk about the actual ex's and
o's of the game. I'm a big basketball guy. Matt
and I are huge hoopheads, and we love talking about
the games and stuff. But you know, you know, we
talk a lot about Nebraska. Of course, we talk a
lot about Creighton and what they're able to achieve. They
obviously at the high major level get a lot of
attention for a lot of different reasons, but everybody. One

(05:07):
of the great things about college basketball is every team
kind of has its own identity in the way that
their coaching staff likes to have them play, and all
the players are kind of empowered to play to their
strengths within a system that's unique to that program. So
for people who haven't seen the Mavericks play under your system,

(05:28):
what can people expect if they want to check you, guys, out,
whether in backsto Arena tonight or on National TV on
CBS Sports, Well.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
I think you're going to see a bunch of guys
that when you look at them, they're going to show
you that they're excited to play. They're gonna play with
smiles on their faces. They're going to show that they
enjoy playing with one another. They're gonna play extremely hard,
and we're gonna play with physicality. We play fast, We
get up and down the floor. We try to shoot

(05:56):
in the road between twenty and thirty threes a night.
We hang our hats on our defense and our ability
to rebound, and our toughness and our physicality. So that's
us in a nutshell, to be honest with you, and
we start off day one playing that way, and now
we kind of got all the pieces that we needed

(06:17):
in our program to continue to amp it up even more.
So that's what you're going to see tonight, and hopefully
we can play it well and make some shots, because
it always come down to making shots.

Speaker 1 (06:27):
Last thing for your coach, because I know you want
to get ready for tonight's action, but I want to
ask about what you like. I sat with some coaches
in previous jobs, while they would scout opponents, and you
know it's a quick turnaround. You guys played two games
in three days in North Dakota. You got a few
days off here to kind of help prepare us. You know,
the guys are starting to spring semester and all that jazz.

(06:48):
But what do you see in Kansas City tonight. They've
won ten games so far this season. They also feel
like they can be a player in conference action here
in the Summit League, and they've won their first couple
of games, which we're both at home. This is their
first conference road game here. What do you see in
them and what challenges are gonna they gonna pose for
you guys tonight.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
Well, their preseason picked to win our conference, so they're
they're a good team. They've been a good team for
a while. They returned more points and more rebound than
anybody else in our league. Uh. They got off to
a slow start town like we did, but you can
see now and they're starting to get their foot and
they have won six in a row. They early physical team.

(07:30):
They priced theirselfs on playing really good defense. They have
really good shooters.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Their head coach, Marvin Menz has been around for a while.
He's been a head coach at seven Division one schools,
so he's a bat and he gets it. Uh, and
I got a lot of respect for him. Uh, but
they're a good program. He got the job at the
same time I got the job here, So I think
we're both in the same place as far as our
building our roster and building a program. And uh, that's

(07:57):
what makes this tonight game so exciting that the fact
that Kreit willcount in the same place and we can
just see we can take a big step tonight.

Speaker 1 (08:05):
It's going to be a big deal. Chris Crutchfield, head
coach for men's basketball at You and O game tips
off eight pm tonight at Baxter Arena, nationally televised on
the CBS Sports Network. Coach, thank you so much for
being a part of the show. We'll love to chat
with you again in the future. Good luck tonight. I
can't wait to see you guys play.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
No doubt a buy it. Thanks for having me on guys.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
Have a good day, yeah you as well. Really awesome
stuff there. We're always here to highlight some stuff that
might slip into the radar a little bit, but a
lot of fun likely to happen tonight over there at
Baxter Arena, and I can't wait to be there in
attendance for all of the action this evening.
