Speaker 1 (00:00):
We are currently being joined on our phone lines today
by a very special guest. It is Dina Newsome joining
us from King of King's Church. Dina, thanks so much
for being on our show today.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Thank you for having me. You know, it's a real
honor to be with streetcar Man.

Speaker 3 (00:14):
Ah street Carmen.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Street car Man is with you here to answer all
your street car quest take off. Well, I think people
are just going to assume that it just just means
that I'm like pro streetcar and I think I'll get
tomatoes s thorwn at me if I go in the
wrong parts of town.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
It very well happened.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
You're gonna have to maybe clarify who streetcar Man is.
But I will say this streetcar Man would be honored
to be at this amazing event that you guys are doing.
And I wanted to shine a light on this. It
is your Night to Shine this year at King of
King's Church. Can you kind of tell us what this is?

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Yes, Night to Shine is an amazing event that was
started by the Tim Tebow Foundation. It's an unforgettable prom
night experience that centered on God's love for people with
special needs. Age. It is fourteen and older. This is
our seventh year hosting it, and we have an amazing
time just celebrating and honoring the guests that come.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
It's so cool.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
So this is going to be taking place this on
the seventh here right, So that just came up Friday night,
So this Friday, this is going to be happening. So
what are some like you mentioned like as kind of
like prom night? Does it kind of operate that way?
How do people get a chance to go to this?

Speaker 2 (01:25):
So we do an online registration for it, and the
guests that attend, they really get to come in to
a red carpet experience. We literally have red carpet. They
get a walk on with people lining there cheering them on,
having paparazzi, so they really feel special from the moment
they come in. They just get the royal treatment. We
have hair and makeup stations, they can get their shoes shine,

(01:49):
take part in limo rides. We have corsages and bootineers
for them, and then there's all kinds of fun activities
that they get to participate in throughout the night too,
karaoke games, they have a lovely cater dinner. We really
just try to spoil them.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
It's so cool.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
This is the you know, we talk about the mission
of what a church is trying to beat Dana, and
I know that every church kind of has its own
lanes that it likes to fill, but in the name
of service, right and certainly faith is a big part
of that. But community is a massive part of this,
because you want a place to where people can feel
the best versions of themselves. They can feel like, you know, hey,

(02:29):
I have people that are on my side and that's
helping me become a better person to myself in the
eyes of the people around me and of course with
my faith. So from a standpoint of the church and
you guys, as an organization, how do you organize this
and what is the kind of hope that you think
the community, even if they don't attain your church, can

(02:51):
understand that the impact that this type of event has
on this community.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
You know. So one thing that we regularly ask ourselves
around here is if our church went away tomorrow with
our community notice And so we really try to pour
into events that see the community, that help the community,
and this is one of those. This community is often overlooked,
and I think that sometimes young people with special needs

(03:17):
just feel like they're not seen. So we really make
a point to try to pour into this and make
it an event that really brings our community, our church
community together. We have a lot of different churches that
send volunteers our way, and then we try to pour
that back into our guests.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
We're speaking with Dina Newsome with King of King's Church
here in Omaha. I've seen some videos of what this
looks like. How many attendees do you typically get to
a Night to Shine?

Speaker 2 (03:47):
So right now we have are expecting about two hundred
and twenty five for the year. Yeah, wow, and we
are actually at capacity for what we have space four.
So that tells us that there is definitely a need
for this, and we are constantly trying to figure out
are there other organizations that want to host something like this.

(04:08):
This event is actually hosted the same night, the same
time every year in seventy two different countries around the world.
So it's really amazing that all of that is happening
at the same time.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Oh, I mean just it really warms your heart.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
And so you can imagine if you have, you know,
well over two hundred people here, how many overall that
are actually served with this. Is there a way that
people can give and be a part of it, even
if you know, obviously you're kind of full on your
attendance here for Friday night's event. But I'm sure that
as a church you're always looking to welcome people in
in what they you know, what they would like to

(04:46):
be able to give for whatever missions that you guys
have throughout the year. What's a good way for people
to learn more about what you guys do.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
People can find out more on our website. It's Kingofkings
dot org. And if they're interested, particularly in Nights to
sh Shine, it's just Kingofkings dot org slash shine to
get more information there.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Yeah, and I'm on the website.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
It is very easy to see what is here and
a bunch of different you know, questions, so many different
things that you need to scroll through here as well. Diana,
before I let you go here today, because this is
such such an interesting thing for you, can you talk
about your personal thoughts on a night like this, right,
because you get to see the kind of impact over

(05:29):
the years that you've had with some of these people
that do have special needs, that have such kind of
a hard time. I think feeling normal in the regular
day in our world and here's a night that's all
about lifting them up.

Speaker 3 (05:41):
What does that mean to you?

Speaker 2 (05:43):
You know, it really just makes me remember how much
God loves each of us. I have been doing ministry
for twenty years, and the bulk of that has been
in kids ministry, And when I transitioned to King of Kings,
I was able to go into more of these events
and we end the night Night to Shine last year
was my first one that I got to be at here,

(06:03):
and we end the night with a crowning moment where
we actually put a crown or a tiara on each
one of our guests, and we have kind of just
this crowning moment that's filled with excitement. We drop a
ton of beach balls from the ceiling. It's very exciting.
But just getting to watch each one of those kids
feel seen, feel honored, feel valued, just fills my cup

(06:28):
so much. I mean, you just can't compare.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
It sounds such like I especially if you could you
imagine being like one of the people that are helping
to be a caretaker for one of these kids and
know like how few and far between these types of
experiences can be for people in this world and for
them to have an opportunity to do this. It makes
all the sense in the world why you have such
a large turnout every single year for this. Dina Newso

(06:54):
from King of King's Church. You can find them online
Kingofkings dot org all the information.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
Is there.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
A wonderful church here doing amazing things in the Omaha community. Diana,
thank you so much for joining our show and talk
for talking to us about this. It's such a special
thing and we're really happy we were able to shine
a light on.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
It to here today.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
Emri, how about that, man, If that doesn't get you
in the fields, I don't know what will. And real
congratulations to them for putting this on and also having
that kind of success. So it's really awesome that we
get a chance to talk about that on the air
and know that that stuff is happening here in Omaha.
