Speaker 1 (00:00):
We got to meet the four major candidates and talk
to them on the show last week, which, by the way,
we put together an omnibus of all four of those interviews.
So you can listen to one podcast. It's available right
now on the Emory Sunger podcast page. So we've missed
one of them, or you want to revisit them, you
want to listen to them all back to back to
back to back, they are going to be there available
for you to do that, and you can find it
on the Emorysnger podcast page on the free iHeartRadio app.

(00:22):
Do you do you want to guess? I mean, this
is not an endorsement, to be clear. This is just
like what we think may happen based on what I'm
hearing of what I'm seeing out there.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
I don't you know, I'd have to think about it.
Put on the put put on on on on a
spot here. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
I mean, I think Gene Stothard has a significant advantage
being the mayor. Yeah, And I don't think enough bad
stuff has happened at all recently. If roads in the
streetcar thing are the only things you can really pin
on her, I don't know how she slips down a third.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
If those are the things that are being pinned, it means, well,
you're not focusing on the economy, because that's fine, You're
I'm focusing on crime rates because I mean unless certain
types of crime rates, I guess. But when you look
at homicides, she has the numbers too. And this is
why the fire or the police chief, I think chief
Moterer says that she's the right candidate is because we've

(01:13):
pulled that number down a lot over the last fifteen
years in the city. So, uh, you know, I don't know,
I feel like she's I'd be surprised to see her
not finish in the top two. And you know, people
we talk about this when it comes to internet, like
national politics, like the national races, people just get tired
of the same people. Like state government, city governments that
don't get sensationalized quite as much, you're not gonna see

(01:36):
a lot of that fatigue. And we talk about, you know,
with like the presidency or no matter who's in power,
even in one chamber or the other, it usually flips
pretty regularly. And like in Congress, one of those chambers
is flipping every couple of years, right, it doesn't consistently
just get owned by one political party like it does
in some states. That fatigue exists at the national level

(01:57):
because it's so easy to hate the people that are
in pawt Oh. We need to change, and then that's
their job is to come up with stuff that needs
to be changed. Do we really have a lot of
that stuff in Omaha? That'd be my question. And I
think it's going to be a completely different campaign when
it's one person versus another person. When it's all of
these candidates and you're narrowing it down to two, there's
a lot on the line, but it doesn't feel like

(02:19):
like it feels like you're just trying to kind of
present an overarching idea of what you present to the
Omaha community. But once it's you versus another person, that's
what I think it's going to get to mudsling and
season pretty quickly. Steve Nash one MVP, though you know
that voter fatigue is oh yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
Joel embiid over yo okay, just a couple of years
ago is another good example of just like, we don't
want to give this guy a third straight MVP. I mean, heck,
you could say that's the reason Lebron has more MVPs
than he has when he was clearly the best player
and probably the most valuable. It's just like we could
give it to that guy every year, I'd be boring.
Let's not do that now. It's just a matter of
like how we look at the city, Like has there

(02:56):
been a more interesting mayoral race? You know, Jasmine Harris
was here with us on Friday and she mentioned, you know,
twenty four percent turnout of eligible voters for the mayoral
race isn't enough. I mean, whoever the mayor is matters
as much to our day to day lives here then
who the president is. And I stand by that your

(03:17):
local government is deciding how to spend your tax dollars
more directly than the federal government is.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Well, you hit a pothole, your car might explode. We
heard that news last week, So yeah, it was crazy.
It matters. I'd love to know what that car. What
was wrong with that car, by the way, I.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
Mean that's not a you had to add a couple
of things wrong with your car for that to be
Maybe it.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Was a Ford pinto. Well know, there goes the Ford endorsement.
Thanks for that, Matt.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
I also wanted to say this for those who are
really upset about the roads, and there are some bad potholes,
don't get me wrong, But to act like other cities
of Omaha sites don't have stuff like this happening regularly,
It's just not true. I lived in the Moyne for
over five years. Every winter and going into spring about
this time of the year, it was as bad, if
not worse there than it is here. And it's just

(04:04):
how do you keep up when you have a climate
that is constantly like freezing reheating. You have to come
up with new compounds of like how we fix the road,
maybe come up with different ideas that are outside the box.
But if we're gonna say Omaha roads are bad, I
mean I would guess most major, highly traveled roads in
Midwestern towns are probably bad this time of the year.

(04:26):
So based on all of that, I just feel like
most people who are going to vote are probably thinking
about what they'd like to change. And I don't think
this is what gene Stouth I think would have to
worry about, is if too many people don't care enough
about the change that they don't even think to go
and vote. Does that make sense? Like I'm not like

(04:46):
Omah's doing great. I don't mind. I don't really think
it matters that much. I'm not going to go vote.
That would be those would be the people that, well,
if you like how it's going, Geene Stouther would be
who you'd vote for now. Between John Ewing, Jasmine Hair Harris,
and Mike McDonald, I mean, Mike McDonald has been as
loud as possible on this stuff, and he's been as
front and center as anybody else. So I honestly think

(05:08):
that he would be the other person that I would
expect to make it past the primary, just simply because
I see more McDonald's signs out and about. I see
some John Ewing signs, and John's got, you know, a
lot of experience as the Douglas County Treasurer, so he
is in a public place, so served in law enforcement.
Jasmin Harris has done a lot of great things as well,

(05:29):
and you know what, we can disagree about some of
the different political background stuff, but these are all people
that have a lot of years serving our community in
a variety of ways. So I honestly, like I am,
I'm just kind of really happy that we had for
legitimate candidates to even have this race. It would be
quite fascinating if we paired it down to Republican versus Democrat.

(05:52):
But I'm also kind of relieved that that's not how
we do that because now because that's a little ambiguous,
even if people who are paying close attention know well
it being, it's ambiguous enough that you actually have to
do some research on what these people stand for, because
it's not as easy as well, this is a Democrat
owned this as a Republican. Everybody's voting in the same
pot here to narrow it down from the current pool

(06:13):
of candidates down to two, and I think Omaha has
be proud that these like you have this many good
people interested in this job, and Omaha's in a great
spot because I feel like things are been going really
well for the most part. It's about how to get
to the next level or to the next spot, and
who's the right leader for that, And that's what we're
going to learn tomorrow. Have you been this intrigued or
excited by a mayor ole race. I can't think of

(06:36):
a time that I have same in any of the
places that I lived, and I think it had to
do this has to do with not necessarily us debating
all these issues, because really the only issues we're talking
about and I hear from people is streetcar management, whether
to keep it or to get rid of it, or
to let the people vote on or to not let
them vote on it or whatever. And then the roads,
which again I think is just a Midwestern problem, not

(06:58):
necessarily just an Omaha problem by itself. A lot of
the other stuff that Omaha has been going through, like
have been good things, Like things are trending in a
very positive direction. I think what's made this race interesting
is the quality of candidates, and that's what we hope
politics in America could be where things are interesting because
we have so many great people who are kind of
battling and jostling for a position to be in charge,

(07:21):
and we have a great group of people to choose from.
This race hasn't gotten to the point at least yet.
I think it could when it gets one to v
one and we know exactly who I know what my
opponent is, and I'm going to go after them because
that's the best way for me to win. I think
there's a chance that does happen here. But for the
most part, I still feel like everybody's platform is something
that can speak to a group of people who live

(07:42):
in this town, and I think that's important well.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
And for those people who maybe things aren't going so
well for them in this city, I hope they're motivated
to get to the polls and use their voice, you
know what, I think.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
I think it'd be really interesting to see what that
turnout is on Tuesday, and then let's compare Tuesday's turnout
to the general election turnout in May, because will that improve,
will it go up or will it go down? Based
on that, I mean, we should be able to see that.
And I would love to see more than twenty five
percent show up to the polls. Be active with your voice.
We have a voice here, like you said, especially if

(08:15):
you don't like the direction that this city is going,
whatever reason that would be, you would have an opportunity
now to decide who you think would be the best
person to lead us. If we see only twenty five
percent or less at the polls, I'd say even thirty
percent or less of the polls, I'd just be disappointed
with that, with that amount of turnout, And I couldn't

(08:36):
imagine that unless there's a ton of money spent in
advertising around town that that number would jump up big
time when it's one v one. I think when you
have four candidates that are like legitimate candidates that are
around town and speak for kind of different groups of people,
I think that more than anything, should get people excited
to go to the polls. And if this doesn't excite people,

(08:56):
then I can't imagine one v one is going to
So that's I think maybe the thing I'm most excited
to see, besides you know who wins, is just how
many people are there at the polls and how many
people are there And we won't know that, of course
until we show up on Wednesday. So I'll have a
little bit more on this and then we'll get to
world backup day. Gonna have some fun with this today
on news radio eleven to ten KFAB. And you go

(09:17):
on the Interstate highway, you don't really see a whole
lot of any issues along the highway most of the time,
even this time of the year, but they usually go
through the entire stretch and they have to shut the
entire highway down. They really invest on making it as
good as they possibly can. However, interstate highways are governed
by a completely different group of people than like cities
or counties, right like, because they go from county to county,

(09:40):
state to state. There's a completely different kind of aspect
to who's responsible for the construction of these areas. And
it's a little more complex than Hey, we have a
pothole on Farnham and we need workers to come fill
that thing up and it could take I mean, there
was a giant pothole in the middle of the road.

(10:00):
It was next to Farnum on fifty second I think
it was, and I drive past it every day at work.
For a while, they just had like one of those
orange cone things instead, just like near it, so you
just wouldn't you'd be aware and not to drive on
it or around it. You'd have to, you know, kind
of stick around by the curb to get around it.
And then they had to shut that whole block down

(10:20):
and make sure that they could get that to settle
with the new concrete. So how long does that stuff
last versus some of the other more expensive stuff, And
what are all the different factors that go into that
to fix the roadways. That's something that I don't know,
but I'm sure there are different compounds, different materials that
could be used.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
It's at what cost?

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Is it the cost of the actual materials itself, the
cost of the labor, And also is there some pushback
if you have something and this is terrible, I know,
but this is how a lot of stuff works. Why
does why is Apple so successful? And forget about the
operating system because as far as I'm concerned, that thing
is garbage planned obsolescence. Explain to the people what obsolescence is.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
It's a product that is built and put into place
and manufactured in such a way that it will only
work for a certain amount of time before you have
to replace it with a new one.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
Or if something malfunctions with anything involving your device, who
has the only resources that you can use to fix it?

Speaker 2 (11:17):
Right the company itself.

Speaker 1 (11:19):
So you have to go through Apple to get anything resolved,
new screen, you get new batteries, your air pods, like
it's all. They have created a business model where the
only people that can help you with a malfunctioning device
is them. So why would you get a good device
from them? Why would anything of theirs be considered durable?

(11:39):
They'd be doing themselves a disservice to give you something
that you can use for ten years. They want to
give you something that they can upsell you. They can
give you stuff that, hey, you can only fix it.
What does so it might make sense for it to
kind of be planned to not work as well. Now
I'm not saying this happens with streets because that I'm
going out on a limb a little bit with this.

(12:00):
So don't say don't don't come back at me and
say you said that this is how it works.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
No, that's not what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (12:04):
I'm just saying that there is going to be a
discussion that if we have invested more dollars into all
of our streets, especially the busy ones with a compound,
that is not going to ever have a problem ever again,
at least for years and years and years, even with
the Midwestern climates. And trust me, there are no cities
that I've traveled on that have awesome streets this time

(12:26):
of the year in the Midwest. But if we did
do something like that, we found out what the budget
could be, and we invest into just loading up our
streets and having like Dodge and some of the other
major byways, you know, Link maybe Cass maybe a little
bit on underwor over here, a lot of places that
are highly traveled and trafficked, especially with some speed like coming.

(12:47):
You know, you could have a you could have a
discussion about what impact does that have to construction in
this town and the workforce for construction in this town. Now,
a lot of people say, well, if the government is
paying the construction companies to fix roads, and that's one
of the things that keep these guys busy all the time,
then we can save money by not having them fix

(13:09):
roads all the time if we invest into the roads
and the quality of the roads. But imagine if you're
the guy who works for the construction company or the
construction company itself that it's contracted to do that by
the government, You're going to say, okay, so what else
do you have for us to do? And let's say
we run out of things to give them because we've
actually resolved a lot of our issues. It's great for
the citizens, but not so great for the construction company.

(13:30):
And how does that work? Is there a contract involved?
Do they have to have certain things to do? These
are all things that I'm thinking about with regards to
the roads. There's a lot more moving parts than Hey,
let's just get the best quality of road put in place.
Right now, there's the money aspect, and then all that
goes around the contracting. Also had another email come in
here and said, I talked to a few folks inside.

(13:50):
If you inside, folks, sorry, over the weekend. One person
thinks it'll be Gene stoth versus John Ewing, and another
person thinks it'll be John Ewing versus Mike McDonald for
the mayor race. When we get to it, this person says,
I think Ewing's democratic turnout may be underestimated just because
of the political climate. Now, we talked about the fact
that it's pretty ambiguous at a local level. We know

(14:10):
that Gene Stothard and Mike McDonald are identifying as Republicans.
Mike McDonald's history, there's a lot of people out there
that are just like, is he really that big of
a Republican?

Speaker 2 (14:19):
Has he swung so far that direction.

Speaker 1 (14:23):
When we knew him to be a little bit more
of am I mean, he was a union boss, right,
I mean, he's had quite a colorful history across the spectrum,
but certainly a lot of his ideals seem to be
very conservative based on the people he's running against. And
then you have John Ewing and Jasmine Harris, who are
both more on the liberal side, but they can't run
with just hey, I'm a Democrat, because that's not how

(14:44):
this works. Everybody is against each other in one big pot.
And I think that's a healthier way to do this
because you actually have to look into it. But John Ewing,
having a bit of a name recognition if you're active
in politics, I think could be important. It's just could
he do what he can to get the turnout? Are

(15:05):
people in North and South Omaha going to turn out
to vote for somebody like John Ewing for the mayoral primary?
Is there enough there? And this is on top of
a bunch of other city council primaries and votes that
need to be happening. But there's got to be something
there that he's going to have to kind of engage
with in farm for more so than the more high

(15:27):
profile candidates, at least that we're hearing or seeing the
signs around downtown. I don't know exactly where you live, Matt,
but I'm sure when you're coming to work or you're
driving on Dodge, I'm seeing a lot of signs for
McDonald or for Stothart, And I do see some John
Ewing signs as well, but I'm just not sure exactly
which pockets he's going to need to pick up in
a lot of different places to work his way into

(15:48):
that mix. I'd be super surprised if Geene Stothart doesn't
make the final two. But based on this information, maybe
we are actually underestimating kind of the Democratic turnout. Who
sees kind of through Okay, we've had enough Republican leadership
technically in this town. We're supposed to be this blue dot,
you know, in this district does vote has voted blue

(16:09):
for President's last two times pretty handily, but still has
elected Republicans like Jean Stothart to be the mayor Republicans
like Don Bacon to be the representative in the House.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
It's pretty fascinating. I feel like I see quite a
few John Ewing signs when you drive through Dundee on
the way to work. It's anecdotal, but it's just it
makes a difference. See, they say something like a sign
can deliver over ten ten people by itself just having
it out there, having a sign. It is anecdotal, but
it could make a difference if there's more of that

(16:40):
than we are anticipating just because we're not in a
lot of the areas that maybe has more support for him,
and I guess we'll see, but if he does find
a way to kind of break into that top two,
it certainly changes the complexion of what that race would
look like, because they think it would be pretty venomous
if it's McDonald versus stouth because they are going to
go to battle on the streetcar a lot. And I

(17:01):
think if it's John Ewing versus doth or John Ewing
versus McDonald, I think the conversation is going to be
quite a bit different, And not that any of these
wouldn't be productive, but I think the conversation is going
to be about a lot of other aspects of Omaha
versus McDonald versus Stouthard. It's going to be one person
that's going to be actively trying to defend the streetcar
plan and another person that says, you didn't give the

(17:23):
people a chance to vote on the street car and
if they vote against it, I'm going to take this
project off the books kind of thing, and that's going
to be what is going to be the real center
of the campaign. If it's those two, stuff to pay
attention to when we head to the polls and vote
for the mayor primary race tomorrow, only two will make
it three twenty nine.

Speaker 1 (17:42):
We come back. All right, it's time to have some
fun with world backup day. What's that look like? We'll
explain it to you next on news radio eleven to
ten kfab. Yeah. And you're a guy and I'm a guy,
and we like to be guys. Just guys being dudes,
just dudes being men. Pretty good game here, I didn't
just look. The college basketball crown is going on. And
this is the reason that we care at all is

(18:05):
because Nebraska plays in this thing tonight.

Speaker 2 (18:07):
Can you believe it?

Speaker 1 (18:08):
They have bad postseason basketball for the Huskers. They're the
last team standing from Nebraska. I have to wonder them.
So they lost their last five they did.

Speaker 2 (18:17):
Before they lost those, they were in position to make
that rinky ink NCAA tournament and probably lose right away,
big whoop. Hey, you know what? Who who knows?

Speaker 1 (18:27):
If you would win three out of those five, you're
definitely in and you have a chance to win another
game or two in the Big Ten tournament, which could help.
You're looking at maybe like a seven or an eight seed.
If things go good enough there. You know, I know
it's never happened for him before, but you can't rule
out that they couldn't do it. I mean, heck, Big
Niece beat Clemson. I mean it's it's like, you know,

(18:49):
it's it's plausible that something crazy could have happened there.
But yeah, losing five in a row at the end
of the season was an absolute abominable way. But hey,
just to finish this up, Arizona State lost their life.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
Also, look what I was trying to say before you
went all pollyannash on me there. Sorry, what I was
trying to say is I wish I was a fly
on the wall for Fred's halftime speech when they started
that losing streak. Fellas were up a couple. We might
even win a couple more this season. We might squeak
our way into that RinkyDink tournament down there, end up
playing some eleven seed from the Mountain West. But what

(19:23):
if I told you, what if we lost the rest
of our game, we tanked it, see, and we got
ourselves of the crown. I think this was the plan.
I think that this was the plan, And now we're
seeing in fruition down in Vegas. They're playing for the crown,
the peak of college basketball, sponsored not yet by Burger King's.
The only thing missing about this whole shebang is that

(19:43):
crazy Burger King mascot just running around in the middle
of games like they still steal the ball. They still
using that guy. I don't know. I think he got
in trouble for a little bit, but he might be
out of the clink, now.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
Okay, well, certainly that makes sense for Vegas where they're
having all of these games at the MGM Grand.

Speaker 2 (19:59):
Can you imagine if the the immick was that it's
sponsored by Burger King and that dude just runs out
onto the court every once in a while and tries
to steal the ball.

Speaker 1 (20:07):
It's like Burger Gag time. And then and then biz
Jack and then Finley. Bizjack has to, you know, like
somehow like crank his ankles or something. I say this
as bit Finley Bizjack gets a nice little land one
here for Butler. This is a good game going on
right now. Butler, who by the way, had a losing
record this season, also had absolutely insane that they're playing

(20:30):
in this tournament, that any team with losing record is
in this tournament.

Speaker 2 (20:33):
But they're third.

Speaker 1 (20:34):
The worst team by record is I believe Arizona State,
who Nebraska plays tonight. At thirteen and nineteen, it's very
close to Colorado's fourteen and twenty record, and I I'm
flabbergasts this zapp at Arizona lost. Arizona State lost eleven
or yeah, eleven of its last twelve games. It's only

(20:54):
win was against Colorado in that span, which is the
only team to finish worse than them in the Big
Twelve standings.

Speaker 2 (20:59):
Who also was in the tournament.

Speaker 1 (21:01):
I have no idea why we care about this or
why we should, but you're saying our stick should be
we're gonna care about it, so let's care about it. Yeah,
I'm all in, all in on the on the college
basketball crown.

Speaker 2 (21:11):
I want the PA announcer to say, have it your way,
and I want to guy to run out onto the
court and steal the ball and just run with it.

Speaker 1 (21:18):
It's not it certainly is gonna happen this year. Maybe
next year. To spice things up, they can recruit one
of those pop tarts. Look at Finley bitch Jack oh Man.
I just love his name, but he's also this crazy
looking little white guy guard for Butler and he tore
up creating a couple of times in the last couple
of years.

Speaker 2 (21:37):
But got the tats. He's got the Norwegian name. Oh yeah,
Finley Bizjack. That sounds kind of Norwegian. Anyway.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
Butler has a four point lead on Utah with for
or eight minutes left, and these guys seem like they care,
like they're excited about what's going on there, and you
know what, like I kind of like that these guys
are playing for pride only. And pretty much all of
these guys are either graduating or they're coming back to
these schools next year, which is the one cool thing
about this is that these guys are just playing extra

(22:06):
college basketball. They didn't think they'd get a chance to play. Yeah,
and that's pretty cool anyway. Imagine being nineteen years old
and being on one of these teams and you have
to spend a week in Vegas and you can't actually
go and do anything.

Speaker 2 (22:17):
You could probably get into those all you can eat buffets.
That's about it. That's a tough look.

Speaker 1 (22:21):
Nebraska scheduled to play Arizona State at seven thirty our
time tonight. The game is going to be viewed on
FS one. I guess if this game goes late or
the game after which is supposed to start at four
to thirty. These are all in the MGM Grand Garden Arena,
so you're kind of at the mercy of the games
before you if you're going to be on time. But
I think they built enough of a window there. If

(22:43):
George Washington and Boise State go long, we should still
probably be on time. Primetime seven thirty goh Skirts World
Backup Day. Is the College Basketball Crown a backup? Or
is the NIT still the backup? We talked about this.
The NIT only had four high major schools in it.
You see they have the final four of the n
I right now too. Do you see which teams made it?

(23:04):
Who is it North Texas? You see Irvine, Chattanooga in
Loyola Chicago.

Speaker 2 (23:10):
So I think the College of Basketball Crown is the
new backup? Is it?

Speaker 1 (23:16):
Do you think even though these schools were like first
or second in their conference, even at the mid major level,
and we're talking about the guys who are finishing like
last in their power conferences.

Speaker 2 (23:26):
Last in the Power second in the just about D two.

Speaker 1 (23:30):
Oh come on yeah, I said, come on now, Drake
made a bunch of D two guys look really good
this year. But that doesn't mean that all. Like like
you're telling me that you see Irvine. If they were
to play Colorado, that game wouldn't be kind of interesting.

Speaker 2 (23:44):
Okay, that one. I'd like to see. Maybe the four
and the four can play each other. That's what they
need to do, work together.

Speaker 1 (23:51):
By the way, pop quiz name the mascots of all
four of these teams. By the way, these the final
four for the n It is tomorrow in the Hinkle
Field House in Indianapolis, which is played and usually.

Speaker 2 (24:03):
By are the Gophers, Golden Ghost, the Butler Bulldogs. Butler
Bulldogs in Indianapolis. That they said Minneapols, No, Indianapolis. Butler.

Speaker 1 (24:10):
Butler's home gym is going to be where they play
the They used to do the N I T and
Madison Square Garden, but now it's such a small time
thing with no big teams that they're playing it in
Uh Butler anyway, North Texas mascot go mean green nice
one for one Dennison right what Dennison Texas.

Speaker 2 (24:28):
Oh, probably you see Irvine mascot. They're like the Trojans
of the Spartans.

Speaker 1 (24:33):
No, No, San Jose State is the Spartans. The UC
San Diego team which made the NCAA Tournament are the Tritons.

Speaker 2 (24:42):
That's what I was thinking of. Yeah, you see Irvine.
The Anteaters. Oh, that's a good one.

Speaker 1 (24:46):
That's a good one. The Anteaters. Uh, Chattanooga, thee Choos. No,
the mox Mox mcs mox like moccasin. I have no
idea and I have no idea what the moc What
a mock is? Uh?

Speaker 2 (24:59):
And loyal the Chicago the Nuns, the fighting Nuns.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
You said that because the sister gene in the fact
that these guys are all Catholic.

Speaker 2 (25:05):
No, loyal Chicago Ramblers. Ramblers, I means they're good at talking.

Speaker 1 (25:10):
This is a literally like a Final four dream of mascots.
The Mean Green, the ant Eaters, the Mocks, and the Ramblers.

Speaker 2 (25:18):
Sign me up. Actually, I think rambler is just another
word for like a hobo. No.

Speaker 1 (25:24):
I think in their case they use a wolf. But yeah, anyway,
I got a lot of people who are emailing me
now about this Crown Tournament.

Speaker 2 (25:32):
I'll have to get to that.

Speaker 1 (25:33):
We are going to talk about the best backups of
all time, because it is world backup day coming up,
So stick with me. On news radio eleven ten kfab.

Speaker 2 (25:40):
Emery's songer aout feeling it now, mister Drad on news
radio eleven ten kfab.

Speaker 1 (25:47):
Here's something I never thought about, and I guess I
may have been told this, but I wasn't sure, but
Luke and Mark both helped me out. Luke says, Hey, Emery,
great show. Thanks, just want to let you guys know.
I believe the winner of this tournamentets fine hundred grand
innil money. I maybe Eve mistaken, but I'm pretty sure.
Love the show, Thanks Lucas. Also, Mark says, I think
the players are playing for a three hundred dollars three

(26:08):
hundred thousand dollars person of the winning team and split
among his players. I'd be playing my butt off too.
Love the show, thanks Mark. So we got to look
this up. What is the prize for the college basketball crown?

Speaker 2 (26:21):
I remember hearing that.

Speaker 1 (26:22):
Okay, So it is a It's basically a five hundred
thousand dollars total pool, and the winning team gets three
hundred thousand dollars in il buney. So these guys are
actually playing to get real dollars. And now, all of
a sudden I'm thinking certain a thing, This actually might
be a genius move because this actually tournament, Like these
guys are actually playing not just for pride, but they're
also playing for the dollars. Do you position yourself? You

(26:44):
mentioned this if I'm a middle of the road Big
Ten team like Nebraska is right now, and I could
either like squeeze into the NCAA tournament and be like
a ten seed, or I could like lose the rest
of my games and land in the College Basketball Crown
and have a chance to win some actual money.

Speaker 2 (26:58):
What would I prefer?

Speaker 1 (26:59):
Now? Obviously they're going for the big tournament, sure, but still,
I mean, like this is not a bad place to land, right, Like,
of course i'd play in this if that was what
was on the line.

Speaker 2 (27:10):
Some could say it was a savvy move, not saying that,
that's what was not saying that. We're not say that.
We didn't say that. We didn't say it.

Speaker 1 (27:18):
They only got left out of the Big Ten tournament
because of a tie break, for whatever it's worth. So yeah,
but still, isn't that kind of interesting? Kind of interesting,
isn't it?

Speaker 2 (27:28):
It's good to be playing in April, That's all I know.
And I can tell you one thing. If they would
have made that RinkyDink nzaa tournament, they wouldn't be playing
in April.

Speaker 1 (27:36):
They didn't start this tournament until March thirty first, and
if they lose tonight, they will not have played in April.

Speaker 2 (27:40):
You know what, stipulations. You gotta come with your stipulations.
I get it, but I think that my point is.

Speaker 1 (27:46):
You're saying that you're playing in April, but they have
to win tonight to play in April.

Speaker 2 (27:49):
You're right, Actually, okay, take it back. That's easier said
than done. They got to win one in this tournament. Yeah,
full of bottom feeders. Let's face it, roll bottom feeders
on the power teams. I mean, George Washington and Boise
State played this next game. George Washington is twenty one
and twelve and Boise State was twenty four to ten

(28:09):
and one of the first teams left out of the tournament.
These are two twenty win teams.

Speaker 1 (28:14):
Butler won fourteen games this year and Arizona State won
thirteen and they're about to play in this tournament against
other bad teams. Yet this stupid bracket, George Washington, Boise State,
one of them has to lose right away.

Speaker 2 (28:25):
But have you ever sat at the poker table. You
think the guy with the stoic look and the sunglasses
and the pedigree of success at the poker table's gonna
take it. And every once in a while there's somebody
on vacation who's twelve drinks deep just throwing cards around,
doesn't even know what he's doing. He winds up he
ends up winning the whole purse. So that could be Butler.

Speaker 1 (28:45):
Yeah, I guess, I mean in theory, but it just
seems dumb that all these bad last place second to
last place teams in these power conferences are in this
tournament and they're playing each other while Boise State in George, Washington,
two of the smaller schools in the ENTI higher tournament,
have to play each other first round with two of
the better records in this entire thing. I mean, heck,
they have the they're number one and number two in

(29:06):
wins in this entire tournament, and they have to play
each other first round. If we're going my record, they
should be the number one and number two seeds. But no,
they have to play each other first round because these
guys who made this are like, how can we eliminate
the little guy's fastest. Oh, I see, that's all I'm saying.
Oregon State, who was a former Pac twelve teams, also

(29:28):
in this tournament. They're twenty and twelve, but they played
in the West Coast Conference this year, firmly mid major
conference for a not mid major team. And then Tulane
technically is a mid major. They play USC tomorrow night
and they're nineteen and fourteen. So literally, George Washington and
Boise State of the two best records in this entire tournament,
and they have to play each other first round.

Speaker 2 (29:49):
What a joke.

Speaker 1 (29:51):
These guys get paid at least, and hey, it's more
basketball for us, So who am I to complain?

Speaker 2 (29:56):
All Right, it's World Backup Day.

Speaker 1 (29:58):
The world one or everybody the world is being told
to back up all your files and all that stuff
because you know, you don't want to lose any of
that stuff. But what does really make a good backup?
We'll try to debate that next on news radio eleven
