Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're here, we'll talk about the sock market. It is
officially closed, and man, we might have to pull out
the sad ukulele music again. But right now we're going
to talk about something that's fun, and that is the
Omaha super Nova's your champions the Pro Volleyball Federation in
action this Saturday against the Orlando Valkyries to one of
the top teams in the league. And this is a
(00:20):
six pm start time on Saturday night at CCHI Health Center,
and it's a pink out, So not only a getting
great volleyball, but this is going to be celebrating something
very important. Joining us is a former Husker, Kayla Caffey,
a Supernova. Thank you so much, Kayla for being back
on our show today. Hi. Yeah, how are you feeling
right now? It's springtime, we're into April. You guys are
(00:40):
in the deep part of your season here. How are
things going over there?
Speaker 2 (00:44):
We're going really well. I mean we're kind of just
ramping up right at the time that we want to
and we're sitting in a pretty good position, which is
first that's ideal. So yeah, I think everything's going good
and we're just training and trying to get better. Every
day so that we can bring home again for Omaha.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Yeah, that's definitely the big goal for a team like
the Supernovas is championship or bust, and that is for
sure kind of take us through kind of the last
couple of weeks. You know, there was an All Star
break this year, guys have had some amazing crowds in
are still drawing just insane amount of people over to
CCHI Health Center. But this league feels like it's pretty
(01:22):
wide open this year. Not that it wasn't last year,
but it definitely feels like there's a level of you know,
uncertainty and a couple of times here at home recently,
including against Orlando, you guys have actually been swept. So
how can you speak to the competition and how you
know difficult this season has been because there are so
many good teams.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Definitely, I think that this season is really tough, especially
when you have those those weeks that you're going to
play two games in a week. This week we're lucky
and we only have one against Orlando. But that's why
we kind of stack our rosters so deep, is just
to have like numbers. But people are getting fatigued. The
league is really strong, especially this year adding more teams.
(01:59):
So really it's just like the Big Ten or any
other competitive league, like it's anyone's night, any any night,
So you just have to come and ready and just
respect each and every opponent. Every team is stacked with
all Americans and decorated players, so you just have to
show up every night.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yeah, okay, so I'm looking at this, Kayla Caffey, former
Husker and current Supernova joining us. You played Orlando at
home on Thursday, February twenty seven, that got swept, Then
you went to Orlando and beat them a couple of
weeks later, and now you guys are gonna play again.
This is Would you consider them your top competition for
the title this year?
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yeah, I would say they have some really really good
people on their team, and they're always someone who gives
us a really good challenge when we play them, And
sometimes you just have to do with matchups the way
people match up, and I think that they have like
a mismatch for us in some areas that we're still
trying to figure out. So definitely, all right.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Let's go ahead and talk about this weekend. You guys
get the player Orlando as mentioned kind of the stretch run.
This is you have a handful of games after this,
so it's not like the end end, but you're kind
of getting into like you want to start playing like
your absolute best volleyball. This is the last full month
of the season here in April. What are some of
the keys that you think are really important for the
super Novas to continue their winning ways.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
I think definitely we need to have strong service. We
want to be in system, and we want to have
strong serving as well so that we can get them
out of system and just make it easier for our
offense and defense as well. And I think just like
also attacking out the middle of the court, that's something
that we've been trying to incorporate more. Just like really
(03:38):
still establishing that connection that takes a really long time
to establish. I mean, my first whole year when I
was at Nebraska, me and Nicklin kind of struggled, and
then the second year it just kind of clicked. So
it takes a really long time to establish that specific connection,
but I think it's coming along.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Yeah. So Kayla Caffey joining us here, Let's go ahead
and talk a little bit about that experience. You were
a professional well last year you finished college just a
few years ago and you've gotten a bit more experience
here in the professional level. What has been that development,
Because now that there is a legitimate answer of professional
(04:13):
volleyball here, I feel like the development of even you know,
high school and younger, you're seeing a lot more interest
and that's just going to generate a lot more quality.
What have you noticed in the last couple of years
with Pro Volleyball Federation among other growing professional leagues around
North America and the world, and the quality of play
that you've kind of seen is you've gotten used to
(04:34):
the pro game the last few years.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Yeah, I think that Pro Volleyball Federation as it grows
and every year is getting better talent. I think the
first year it was good, but I think this year
is even better. I just think that it's starting at
club and even the college level is just getting more competitive,
and then those girls are feeding into PVF right and
so I think it's a commodity right now to stay
(04:56):
home and play volleyball. So we're getting some of the
best athletes right now. So I think it's a really
good place to be even with love too, Like it's
just right now the place to play volleyball is America.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Yeah, yeah, you mentioned a great point there. I mean,
the amount of pro volleyball that you could play in
the United States realistically just a few years ago was
zero and now there's multiple options for people to be
able to give us a good look at what we
have here. So let's talk about this Saturday's game. You
mentioned we talked about Orlando is the opponent, but you
(05:28):
guys are also doing something that's very important. This is
our pink out, first pink out for the Omaha Supernovas.
Take us through what we expect in CCHI Health Center
coming up here on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Yeah, I mean, I think this is going to be
for one really good volleyball, but also it's going to
be a pink out. We're just trying to raise awareness
for cancer, a really important cause that I know has
touched a lot of people on our teams lives and
probably a lot of our fan base too. So it's
going to be a really fun night and it's just
going to be really meaningful and important.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Yeah, and you can learn more about this. Supernova's website
very easy to find and you can just honestly google
Omaha Supernova's and it'll pull right up for you, Kayla,
last thing for you before we let you go here.
I did see this, and I know you didn't play
at Creighton or at the University of Nebraska Omaha, but you,
being a player who certainly knows Omaha and the state
(06:19):
of Nebraska and how we love volleyball. There's gonna be
a spring match on Friday, a little doubleheader as you
guys play Columbus, and before you play, there'll be a
spring match between Creighton and the University of Nebraska Omaha.
What is a day like this at the end of
April of all places. What does a day like that
mean for volleyball in a city like this? And how
big of a deal do you think that's going to
(06:40):
be down the line here in a few weeks, knowing
that the city of Omaha's going to get a chance
to look at two quality volleyball teams plus the best
pros that exists on planet Earth.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
I think it's awesome for Omaha. I think this is
generating more excitement and really just adding emphasis to this.
This is the volleyball capital. We're having a double hiader
with great talent in one day at the CHI like
it's just going to be so exciting a night full
of volleyball, so I just think it really just rains
in again, like this is the volleyball capital of the world.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
And you know what we love being known is that
Kayla Caffey who's on the Supernovas. Of course they play
this Saturday. More on that in a second. That volleyball
after dark, by the way, with Creighton and U and
O just in front of the Supernovas in Columbus. That's Friday,
April the twenty fifth, a doubleheader there. That's gonna be
a lot of fun. Kayla, thank you so much for
the time. Congrats on the season. You guys are having
good luck this weekend and the rest of the way,
(07:33):
and I'm sure we'll talk to you again soon.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Thanks Emruary. Good talking to you.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
Yeah, I love that all right. And by the way,
six o'clock this Saturday, the Valkyries of Orlando. Great name,
good color scheme, Almas Supernova's incredible color scheme, excellent logo,
a lot of fun going to be had, the pink out,
a lot of support for you know, of course cancer awareness,
and always an emotional night. And I might just happen
(07:56):
to have four tickets to give away to that right now.
So Matt, give me an number between forty and sixty. Ready, ses,
I go fifty four, fifty four the fifty fourth caller,
You want four tickets to go watch this game on Saturday.
