Peace Plan In Gaza Is Looking Optimistic

That is my pleasure. Good to speak to you again.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
Yeah, we talked a lot these days because you know,
you're you're really plugged into international stuff, and of course
we're trying to figure out exactly the parameters of what
has been agreed to, what needs to still be agreed
to between Hamas and Israel, and we're making real progress here,
very close to the finish line potentially. What has the
latest that you're hearing here, Jonathan.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Yeah, the situation is this, President Trump unveiled his twenty
point initiative for peace last week. The talks are going
on this week, and while a lot of this hasn't
even been discussed, some very very important parks have not
only been discussed, they have been agreed. Israel and Hamas
have signed an agreement to cease fire and to free

(00:44):
all the remaining Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
This is something which has been longed for in Israel,
in Gaza and elsewhere for a long long time, for
two years and two days, and now this appears to
be coming very very close to fruition. Right now, the
is Really Security Cabinet is meeting. They are expected to

(01:06):
endorse the deal. It will then be ratified by the
Israeli government in full, and within twenty four hours of
that happening, the ceasefire will begin. We can expect, certainly,
we can hope the hostage is returning home by Monday.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
That would be a very good timeline. There are always
questions though, as to whether or not, until we actually
see it happening, whether or not Hamas is going to
decide to play ball in the way that you're hoping
they will. And I know that there has been some talks,
some agreements, some you know, hostage releases over the last

(01:42):
two years, but every time we have gotten at least
some progress, there has been a snag or a hang
up at some point. Does this feel different to you,
considering how decimated Maas has been based on Israel's attacks
on their leadership over the last you know, several months.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
It does feel different on a whole load of reasons.
To be honest with you, Yes, Hamas have had their
leadership decimated. Israel attempted to assassinate their leadership last month
while they were in cutter and they failed to do so.
The toll it has taken on the Palestine people is
immense there's a real weariness of the war in Gaza,

(02:22):
as there has been since it started, really, but it's
extraordinary in Israel. Also, there's a lot of pressure on
the Israeli government to end this war, coming from the
White House in particular. Really the only country which is
that kind of influence on Israel is the United States,
and President Trump has a great deal of personal influence
over Benjamin Nissan Yahoo, And it feels very much like

(02:45):
President Trump has said, look, it's time to make a deal.
He's put pressure on the Israelis. He and others put
pressure on Hamas and they got around the table and
he got to this stage.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
Jonathan Savage joining us here from London. Donald Trump you
mentioned he's I mean, it was him in the White
House along with Benjamin Etniahu that unveiled that twenty point
plan to get to the comprehensive piece and hopefully we're
going to be seeing here in the Middle East. He's
playing a big role, and I know he wants to
play a role in actually being a part of the negotiations.

(03:16):
At the very end, sounds like he may want to
actually be in person for this. What are you hearing
about Donald Trump's actual presence in the Middle East for this.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
Yeah, if President Trump said that he was thinking of
going out to the Middle East, and in fact that
he's really President said that they're peering for him to visit.
So it's thought possible at this day that President Trump
could travel with this weekend to Egypt and Israel and
then be in Israel when the hostages start to return home.
President Trump, of course, has really put his stamp on

(03:50):
this deal. He's put his name to this deal. He
is looking forward to reaping the benefits of this deal.
People have been praising him. But of course the flips
like that coin is that if it fails at some point,
then it will be President Trump's credibility that will take
a hit. So he is a real motivation from making

(04:10):
sure that all sides stick to what they see they're
going to do.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Yeah, and Jonathan, I'm gonna go there, right because we
can't predict with the next seventy two plus hours going
to look like in the Middle East, but we know
what has been agreed to at least to this point.
But the legacy move here from Donald Trump, who when
he took office, he said, I can end the war
in Ukraine. I can end the war in Israel. I'm
gonna make us closer to world peace. The United States

(04:36):
will lead with strength and will have peace around the
world because of that. This has been a bit more
of a challenge, and I think he figured it would
be in both of those conflicts, but this one in particular,
trying to get Benjamin Att and Yahoo to agree to
whatever terms, then get to Hamas and have them agree
to these terms. What is on the line for him

(04:57):
and what kind of legacy move do you think. I
think he believes this is for himself and for his
administration if he's able to find a way to get
the dotted line signed and get this war to a conclusion.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Yeah, being considered a peace making president is clearly very
important to him. He's made no secret of the fact
that he would like the Nobel Prize for Peace. He's
been nominated for it, along with well over three hundred
others that will be announced tomorrow. At least for this year,
it's thought unlikely that he will be giving the Nobel Prize.
Himself said it unlikely partly because this has just happened

(05:32):
in the last few days, and I think they would
look to see a longer lasting piece record before they
awarded him that honor. But despite that, I think you know,
he wants to leave office in several years time being
known as the person who ended the war in Gaza,
moved the region towards a more stable future. And of

(05:54):
course he would like to end the war between Ukraine
and Russia as well. That has stalled somewhat, the Russians
themselves saying that it stalled, and there are no plans
for any more meetings between presidents Putin and Trump, so
perhaps he will turn an attention to that if things
go as he hopes they will between Israel and Hamas.

Yeah, it's going to be something we'll keep an eye
on and one step at a time, certainly, but positive
steps being made in the Middle East. Jonathan Savage from
