How you being I have been doing fantabulous good getting
ready for this big event on Monday.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Yeah, nine o one day.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
For those that don't know, and maybe you're new to
Memphis or you want to come to town and be
a part of it, well it's not a one day
and it it is something that you definitely need to experience.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Yeah, nine on one day is definitely an experience. You know,
here in Memphis, everyone thinks about blues and barbecue both.
They really don't understand. Memphis is a.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
True culture city. Yeah, we have so much.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
We have theater, we have visual arts, you know, we
have so much that opera to share. Yes, opera and
we're drinking now, I can't do that one, but.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Stoma give me the opera. I take that. Okay. I
think you could Jill Gan do some opera. I think
you can do both. Yeah, but you're right.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Culture, I mean, when you talk about it, Memphis is,
uh probably one of the cultures that everybody over the world,
all over the world knows us for different things, for dancing,
for music, rock and roll, blues, you name it, you
name it.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
And we're going to showcase everything Monday on Bill Street. Oh,
that will be showcase.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
This is gonna be good.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Okay, So I've seen a little bit on the news
and we've been talking about what we're gonna be doing
down there. We're excited because we we're ready to come
down and have a good time. Me Stan, Tracy, We're
gonna be down there along with everybody else at iHeart.
Mike t will be there and I think he's gonna
(02:53):
be DJing and big suits.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Gonna be in the house. Coming.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
We are coming and we're excited too. But it's eleven
am to seven pm. So everything that's going on that
you can think of maybe in the very beginning, let's
start there.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
What's happening at eleven am that you could share.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
Eleven Am on Bill Street between Second and Third. We're
going to have the touch a Truck experience. This is
for our little people. We're going to have a fire engine.
We're going to have the mounted Patrol with their horses.
We're going to have motorcycles. We're going to have the
van from Memphis Animal Services. We're going to have a
(03:39):
really interactive experience with the library.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Van out there.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Oh wow, we've got some of everything and the cool party.
We've got our little pink vehicle. Have the Memphis Police
Department and kids will be able to take pictures with
all of these vehicles. They can actually go to a
dump truck and touch it. You know how kids are fascinating.
This time they can actually see it. You know, they
(04:03):
see police cars go up and down the street. This
time they can actually see one and touch one. And
we have the University of Memphis firechuk which is active,
active working fire truck. We have that out there, so
the kids would be able to do that. Plus we
will have some interactive games for them out there. Ah.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
I love that.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
You know, It's always something fun for us to do.
And I'm so glad that as a city, you didn't
just think about us, you thought about our kids.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Thought about it, because we thought about everything.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
You know. This nine on one day is something that
the mayor loves to do because it brings everybody, every
segment of the city of Memphis together and we have
a good time. I'm telling we know how to party.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
And what about the people because last year was it
like eight thousand or ten? Oh my goodness, collectively yeah, wow,
came out, people came out, everybody behaved.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
We had a ball. That's the best way I can
put it. Is an experience. You know, you get to
see the music, look at the arts and the different
but it is a feel and energy when you get
all of these Memphians together and we're all in harmony,
having a good time, just experiencing Memphis and what everything
Memphis has to offer.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Okay, Tony Uh turner's your last name? We say both,
all three of them, all three way. I got it.
I got that.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Okay, So with the City of Memphis. She's on the show.
You guys, thank you for being here. So when it
comes to how we dress, do you think if we
wore some Memphis gear or Grizzlies gear, anything a red
red is it the Red Sox?
Speaker 2 (05:48):
And whatever we have that that redbirds?
Speaker 1 (05:51):
Yes, redbirds? Whatever we have that I guess is Memphis.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Yes. Should we wear it? On nine on one day?
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Wear whatever you like, but you really want to get down,
go ahead, put your Memphis gear on. Be proud of
the nine on one because there's no place we're like
Disneyland and Disney World Memphis. There's no place else on
earth like it. Memphis Tigers too. Wear those jerseys or
those T shirts, whatever you got, the hat Memphis, Memphis,
(06:20):
Memphis people all day you know, and we've got a
special at the New Daisy. The mayor is doing a
fireside chat with teens that whole morning, starting at eleven o'clock.
And I think the mayor is going to be having
this fireside chat at about noon with teens so they
can come and ask questions and talk and it's a
(06:42):
safe space for them to talk. So y'all don't want
to ask questions now with Stormy and you know, we
can be in that bowsome. Yeah, but you know, it's
a free space for them. Let can tell you we've
got something for everybody. One of the first acts, we
have other fans, Barnes Brothers, and they kind of give
you this jazz gospel field. Yeah, you know, we've got
(07:06):
all sorts of good stuff. We've got the Central High
Jazz Band. Oh, and they are going to we have
two different performing stages and they're going to be performing
on the Handy Park stage, the winners, Yes, the World
War One World Control.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
High School Ah Jazz band, come on here. I love that.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
And we have Princeton James and his cooler kids. Those
kids are so cool, creative and fun. They're going to
be performing. We have a Spanish speaking group that is
going to come.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
To do theater.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
Wow, we have collage ballet. They're gonna Yes, you know,
I'm telling you you got it all. We've got it all.
You thought of it all. We've thought well as much
as we can think of. Hopefully we have next year.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
People. If there's something we've forgotten, let us know. I
love that. I love How so you plan this?
Speaker 1 (07:57):
When you finish with not on one day, after all
the planning that you do for it, and it's over,
do you start planning for the next year.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
We give ourselves about two months and then we start
thinking about it all over again. Yeah. It goes into
a lot of planning, a lot of coordination, and a
lot of teamwork.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
Yeah, when you have an event like that and you
got to put a lot of moving parts together, there.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Are a lot of moving parts, you know, coordinating with
you know, Office of Emergency Management, making sure we coordinate
with Memphis Police Department.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Oh absolutely, shu.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
People feel comfortable coming down there and we will have
a very good heavy police presence.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
And so when you have not on one day, I
know it's for us, but is it a day where
the mayor and even of other folks invite visitors into
our city to see what Memphis.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
Is all about.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Hey, it's on a holiday, so that way family, It's
on a holiday, so something extra for the people that
come in town. This is for them as well. Yeah,
experience Memphis. Yeah, it sounds like it's just growing every year.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
It is. It really is, because it wasn't this big
last year.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
But now we have a person that is in charge
of cultural economy, DeMarcus Suggs, and he's the one who
has really put a lot of this together, all these
different components, all these different groups showcasing Memphis.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Yeah, I know last year when I saw the video,
Ladier Yates was on the stage and I looked at
that audience. It was a sea of people. I was
thinking to myself, ooh, I was trying to get down
there too with that at something. I had another event
I had to do, so I couldn't make it, but
oh it was fabulous.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
And Latia's gonna be back again that year with her girls.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
She's gonna be back again this year.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
Okay, shout out to her and Chelsea Chandler because I
don't know if you saw them on US thirteen doing that.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
Chelsey can dance? Can she that is Chelsea gonna be
there performing on stage.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
I'm getting but wouldn't it be nice to have her
do that? Well, all I can say is be there.
Don't miss it.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Yeah, if you guys haven't seen it, it was on
Fox thirteen. But it's also all of our social media's here.
You'll see Chelsea dancing with Ladia to that Chris Brown song.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
They Chelsea she killed it. Yeah, and she normally does. Yeah,
she does.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
And you know what our headliner this year, Yes, it's
Project pat.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Ooh that's gonna be good.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
The experience is unbelievable. He's going to be performing with
the Tennessee Mass Choir. Imagine that.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
Oh, that's gonna be awesome.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
Is going to be chilling. And I heard too, the
little Elena Doty is going.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
To be she sure is.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
Yeah, she's the young girl for those of you that
are listening that know that went viral rapping to his
chicken Head song and it looked like they were in
a restaurant or some of the restaurants. The little girl
was killed.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Yeah, doing karaoke.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
She did that, yeah so much so that what she
had millions of views and everybody all over the world
has shared the video of her performing and to hear them.
I understand that they're teaming up this weekend, I think
in Nashville and then coming to Memphis on Monday.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
Yeah, that's very possible. I don't know her schedule.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Yeah, she will be Monday afternoon downtown.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
She's from by Halia, Mississippi. So shout out to the
folks down there. Good Tony Holman Turner is here with me,
you guys from the city of Memphis, and thank you
for being here today. And Stormy, thank y'all for listening
to the Pulse. Now let's get back into more conversation
about nine oh one day. Tell me, what do you
(11:48):
feel like? Is the spirit of that day? The spirit
is so electrifying.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
You know.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Last year when I looked out on Bill Street and
I saw all these people, different ages, different races, it
just made me have almost a teary moment, and that
had to remind myself I could didn't bring my extra makeup,
so I couldn't have one. But it is so warming
to see everyone out. It just makes you feel good
(12:19):
and young and old, young and old.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
Yes.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
So the kids are there, yes, And I'm encouraging people
to bring their lawn chairs when they enjoyed the entertainment
at Handy Park.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
That's good. Bring your lawn chairs for Handy Park.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
If you're coming to be in that area of because
it's there are other areas too, because there's a Bill Street, we're.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
Taking the whole street.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
We're gonna be, i know, posted up at the Western
court side drive the Western. We're gonna be hanging out
in that area and on the stage. So we're excited
and we got a lot of good stuff.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
We're gonna be giving.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
Away tickets and all of that stuff. You see us,
say hi, say hi.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Our herd is have our heart, is gonna have Downtown
on lock Yeah. Yeah, And we're excited about it too.
We really are to be a part of this and
seeing all the other folks. And I don't want to
give anything away if you're not ready to give it away.
Because I saw the lung you know, be there, don't
miss it. It's you guys. It's almost like a spiritual
(13:21):
experience just looking at all the people get it together together.
It is a an experience.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
From what I've seen.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
I haven't had a chance to experience it myself, but
I'm excited to see it just knowing that so many
people take pride in this city and I this kind
of stuff really helps us all out.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Story I forgot. We're also going to have a fashion show.
What yes, girl, Demmy Black is going to be on
the Handy Park stage with his original wares and a
fashion show now telling you we got it. All that
is gonna be so nice, Oh my goodness. And we're
gonna have a live paint session. Yes, We're gonna have
(14:04):
a live paint. It's going to paint to a DJ.
So the music is going to be going and he's
going to paint.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
I've seen I've seen that before and I'm looking forward
to seeing it.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
All of this and personal. Yeah, that's on the Handy
Park stage.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
Wow. Okay, so listen for those of you that don't
have anything to do Monday, it's a holiday, y'all are
off work. Get the kids, put them, everybody in the car.
That's what I love about it. It's for everybody. It's
not just for.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
This age or that age.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
Everybody's gonna have something you got the family, find kids own.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
I heard you got that going on? Yeah, uh huh.
And other activities for people to take part in.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
Yes, we also will have a vendor market inside Handy Park.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
Okay, tell me about that.
Speaker 3 (14:50):
People will have original wares. These are things that you
cannot get at Walmart or Walgreens or wait a minute, Yes,
so we could go shot. Yes, girl, we're gonna shot
till we just handmade jewelry things of that nature. Wow. Okay,
so we're gonna have all of that in Handy Park.
I'm telling you it's all Memphis, Memphis.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
Memphis, Memphis.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
And you know how it goes when somebody starts with Memphis, Memphis, Memphis, Memphis.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
You know, finish it. Help them?
Speaker 1 (15:21):
Hi, come on, so art displays, interactive exhibits, Family Fund Zone,
local vendors. You basically talked about a lot that's gonna
be happening down there. Now I will tell people, Tony,
you probably know this. We're gonna be, like I said,
up and down Courtside Grill is what I was trying
to say earlier. Downtown. We'll be posted up in the
(15:44):
western noon to four pm. Will also be at the
stage on Bill. We're gonna be back and forth, but
we're gonna be giving away a lot of tickets down
there and hooking people up with all kinds of stuff.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
For those of you that.
Speaker 1 (15:57):
Know about Memphis artists, your favorite will probably be there.
Speaker 2 (16:01):
Yeah, and talking about parking.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
People complain about parking, Oh yeah, but we've got a
nine on one special. Oh, at the two fifty Peabody
Place and at the Mobility Center at Bill and Front,
parking will be nine dollars and one cent.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
I like that.
Speaker 3 (16:21):
Nine dollars and one cent at both of those locations.
When you go in the code to get the nine
dollars and one cent is nine on one. What I
guess it's nine oh one. Okay, So it sounds like
y'all thought of everything.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
So again we're gonna slow it down for the people
in the back that didn't get all that information about
the parking. Tell me that again, nine dollars one cent
parking at two fifty Peabody Place and at the Mobility
Center at Bill and Front, the code to get the
(16:57):
nine dollars and one cent parking is nine on one.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
I love that because over at the Western where we're
gonna be, there's nine dollars and one cent beverages and appetizing. Okay,
So everybody thought a lot about this nine oh one thing,
and I love and the fact that it is on
nine oh one day.
Speaker 3 (17:19):
Yeah, and tell them don't forget about the all of
the good places to eat and have refreshing beverages on
Bill Street. Some of the Bill Street merchants will be
having nine on one special.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
So when we say nine on one day, we mean
nine one day. You know, this is something that the
mayor wanted to do just to celebrate us. People give
us a hard time, don't they know in our hearts
who we are and what we believe in. And when
(17:52):
you're from Memphis, you are die hard Memphis. Whether you're
from Orange Mound, South Memphis, it doesn't matter. Yeah, I'm
from South Memphis with a Orange Mount pedigree personally, but
I'm all day Memphis. My brother lives in another state
and I have to send him Memphis stuff. Yeah, every
(18:12):
which got new sis, you know. So I find things
and send them to him and he reps his nine
o one. Trusts me he will be posting a picture
from Albuquerque, New Mexico on Monday with his nine on
one shirt.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
You tell him to come on down here, bring the
kids being the family, and come on down to nine
oh one experience it, like we're gonna be there experiencing it.
It's gonna be so much fun. You guys, like I said,
I've never had the opportunity to attend. But y'all go
look back at some of the pictures from years that
it's been happening and see for yourself how much fun
(18:45):
nine to One Day has been and how much fun
it looks like it's going to be this year. Are
you adding and adding more things every year? This is
our second year and we have doubled what we did
last year. Wow, mm hmm. What is that on stage?
Or doubled in the experienced the programming because we have
(19:07):
totally programmed Handy Park m hm with the vendors and
the entertainment. Now, is that where the fire trucks are
going to be for the kids when they get fire
trucks going to be on Bill Street between Second and
third So the kids get to experience Bill Street in
the day. Yeah there, some of them probably already have experienced.
Oh yeah, this is yeah, their opportunity to come down
(19:30):
and next and just.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
Know that when you when you come on the street,
everyone will be wanded.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
Okay, okay, that's that's good.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
To know.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
We don't want no foolery, so to do our best
to ensure a safe environment. Everybody will be wanded. So
if you bring in your little friend, keep it in
the car, m okay, okay, or you'll have to go
back and put it in your car. No weapons allowed,
No weapons allowed, nothing even wand you. And that's good
(20:02):
to know too for the folks that are you know,
planning to come. But also the fact that you said
there will be a large police president. Definitely, yeah, definitely.
And like I said, we're there to celebrate Memphis, to
have a good time. You know, you may run into
somebody that you hadn't seen in a while. Yeah, it's
that kind of atmosphere. Yeah, and that's how it should be. Yeah,
(20:24):
it is, y'all. Don't miss it. It's gonna be so much.
The weather's going to be great, that's what they're saying.
And get on down to Bill Street. Nothing to stop
you because you never know what surprises might show up.
So is there anything else that you can share with us?
I guess about the lineup, anything that maybe I know
(20:45):
you got some gems that are gonna be there and
on the stage and all that good stuff.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
But is there.
Speaker 3 (20:51):
We're going to have DJ Alpha Whiskey. Okay, We've got
the sensational Barn Brothers. We've got Tight t, We've the
girl Big Su Yeah, we've got the Stacks Music Academy.
The Grizzlies is bringing breeze. We've got Hope Clayburne, Soul
Scrimmage our headliner. And of course we talked about Ayana
(21:15):
and so that is on what we a little bit
of what we heard. Oh we got South Memphis hype Man.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
What, Yes, we got.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
South So is he just gonna walk up in there
or how's he gonna come? Because usually you know he's
walking up in there.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
You have to be there to experience.
Speaker 1 (21:33):
Oh wow, this is gonna be big for everybody. Okay,
you really are bringing Memphis to the table. We are
on the Handy Park stage.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
We have ek Pay.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
You know Ekpay is a guy that does all the
African percussionists and the cause of te Autro, which is
the Spanish speaking theater. Oh, we have New Ballet Ensemble,
Central High School Jazz Band, the Big Week, Community Scene,
Collage Collective, Princeton, James Cooler Kids, DJ Apple Whiskey, Kia
(22:08):
Shine and the Demi Black Fashion Show. See, that's a
lot of Memphis and a lot of good stuff.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
You know what's gonna happen. It's gonna be a lot
of social media too.
Speaker 1 (22:19):
People gonna be that, people are gonna be doing videos,
and this is gonna be one of those days when
you're probably definitely encouraged to do that. Make Memphis go
viral for the good stuff that we do around here,
because you know, sometimes they would just want to highlight
the bad. But it's a lot of good going onshood.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
And you know, Memphis, everybody knows they ain't like us.
Speaker 2 (22:45):
Come on.
Speaker 3 (22:48):
That. No matter what section of the city you come from,
they ain't like us.
Speaker 2 (22:53):
Ah man that because we are Memphions. Yes we are.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
Tony Holman Turner on the show with me today, Thank
you so much for coming.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
City of Memphis is getting ready to put it on.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
You're gonna put it on. I put on for my
City into a rap song like that, put on for
my City something like that.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
Uh huh.
Speaker 1 (23:11):
I don't. Yeah, hopefully they were talking about this city
right here, But if they weren't, it's okay. We take
us out of the city bar for a minute, because
we're gonna put on for our city. We are so fabulous.
I do want to tell I want you to tell
us again about the parking situation for those that didn't
get it, Uh, the nine dollar one cent so nine
oh one nine on one parking that is the code
(23:36):
for two fifty Peabody Place and the mobility center at
Bill in Front, that brand new center that we just
built at Bill in Front.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
Okay, yeah, okay, so y'all parking zone.
Speaker 1 (23:50):
Yeah, and I'm sure there will be other places downtown
as well. We've got plenty of parking in the neighborhood. Yeah,
a lot more spaces down there to park at now.
And just think about it. It's not a far walk at all,
and you gonna have a good time. Even if you walk,
you may want running too, like you said earlier, somebody.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
You know, and especially with those who haven't been in
downtown for a while, we have had so much development.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
