Speaker 1 (03:58):
Well, this is no she's been here before to the
BEB Johnson Show. Miss Ashley Cash, who is Director of
Housing and Community Development for the City of Memphis, and
Miss Karen King from the Fraser Urban Garden. Good afternoon, ladies.
Hey y'all, good doing, good, good afternoon. Good seeing y'all.

(04:19):
LEAs Ashton, how you doing since the last time I
saw you in here with the sisters.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
Yeah, they've been doing good, hanging in there, were hanging
in there, hanging in there.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
Well, We know that because talking about the Taste of Memphis,
What sister, is this all about?

Speaker 4 (04:36):
Yes, so the Taste of Memphis is our eleventh year
where we're doing the Taste of Memphis and it's a
play on words. It's really a taste eleventh year. Yes, Yes,
last year was ten and so this year we got eleven.
And so it's a play on words, a taste of
Memphis neighborhoods where really we're inviting neighborhood organizations, different groups

(04:56):
in the city to come out and have a great
time with us Tomorrow night on Tiger Lane from five
to ten pm. So it's at Tiger Lane Tiger Lane, Yes,
it's at Tiger Lane, And so we get together. We
do this annually and I like to think of it
as a neighborhood block party where really we have things

(05:19):
for kids to do, we've got food trucks, we've got
a host of entertainment, and we also have one of
our wonderful agencies that always comes out and supports us,
with Mss Karen King here. If you want to talk
a little bit about y'all's booth and kind of what
y'all do.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
Yeah, and won't come in Miss Carrien.

Speaker 5 (05:36):
Oh, thank you, thank you again. I'm Karen King. I'm
with the Fraser Community Urban Garden. I'm also I also
rally up the Fraser community to get them to participate.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
Uh huh.

Speaker 5 (05:50):
This is our fourth year participating and it seems like
I get more and more people to actually sign on
and come out. We have a good time again. It
is like a block party. I make it a fun time.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
Last year I had if.

Speaker 5 (06:07):
You have a good time, I do. I have bubbles.
Last year I had wings that lit up.

Speaker 4 (06:13):
Yes, yes, we have a good time.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
I know you.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
But I'm want to ask you this, Karen, what is
the Fraser Urban Garden.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
What exactly is that?

Speaker 5 (06:23):
So the Fraser Community Garden. It is located in the
heart of Fraser at the old Davy Crockett Archery Range
at forty fifty one point Church. It's a three acre
green space. We host events.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
We have the.

Speaker 5 (06:39):
Journey Kids Gardens started at the time by three year old.
So we host kids, we do events, we have Uh.
This year we started a food forest. We have what
does that mean? Food for us? Well, roughly about twenty
five already native fruit bearing trees were planted in our

(07:04):
garden and we dubbed that our food for we may
not reap the harvest in the next few years, but
someone will be able to go out there. And we
have all these different fruit trees that are planted out garden.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
So in the Fraser Community Urban Garden, you all grow vegetables.

Speaker 5 (07:24):
Yes, we grow vegetables. We had watermelons, we had we
do kettalo last year, I did lufa. We do flowers
of course, yes, hot peppers. We all saw do a
it's called a Thai basil, Thay basil. And our garden

(07:45):
manager who is could Camille James. She makes a Thai
basil tea that are knock your socks off.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
So with this community garden is it for the people
in Free or who who can get get some of
these things from the garden.

Speaker 5 (08:04):
The community gardens for the community, whether they're in Fraser
outside of Fraser. Right now we are looking for community partners.
So if anybody is interested come grow with us, one
seed at a time. They can follow us on our
social media. They can also visit our website at Fraser

(08:25):
Urbangarden dot org and sign up for classes, to volunteer,
to make donations.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
Good yeah, and so also Karen and interesting with with
with your garden. You've all been successful, so Sol coming up,
well said, because I don't have a I don't have
a green thumb. I my flowers die. Maybe I try
some tomatoes now, So you all been been successful.

Speaker 5 (08:59):
We have really been successful. This year was kind of
slow for us. You know, at the top of the year.
We had all that rain to come in and the
grass laughed at us because we are on three acres.

Speaker 4 (09:12):
So yeah, and.

Speaker 5 (09:14):
We we our sponsors, we have we're looking for a
new sponsor. Okay, so we lost our sponsor this year
and we just kind of fell behind. But we had
planted a lot of stuff, count of lope watermelons, and
unfortunately the animals ate better than.

Speaker 2 (09:29):
We did this year.

Speaker 4 (09:32):
But that's okay, that's okay, yes, yes, so, but.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
But you all are still working in the community.

Speaker 4 (09:37):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
Also with this project, Karen, do.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
You get a lot of children to participate teaching them?

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (09:46):
Absolutely.

Speaker 5 (09:47):
We We like when the kids come because they get
to touch, smell, even taste from the garden. Did with
the Journey Kids garden, you know again a little Misjourney
planted strawberries that are still there that comes back every year.
Earlier this year, we had a group of kids to

(10:07):
come out with the Memphis Music Initiative. We have an
event it's called Color Me Frasier And this year when
they came in, they planted a one of the trees,
they did a time capsule.

Speaker 4 (10:19):
They have come out to.

Speaker 5 (10:22):
Paint like tires that we stacked up, just different stuff. So, yeah,
we we love when the kids come.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
We love so and.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
And someone's listening who may live in that area probably
didn't know you all had that exactly. Can they get
as you said, you're always looking for volunteers, yes, can
get involved.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
Yes.

Speaker 5 (10:44):
So right now we are going through a transition where
we're getting ready to redesign how we grow.

Speaker 4 (10:50):
We're growing and learning at the same time.

Speaker 5 (10:53):
And because we are in the forest, we are surrounded
by very tall, mature trees, and so we're gonna redesign
where we're growing. And we do need a lot of
volunteers coming up in the next few weeks, and.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
You probably need people who are very what's the word,
people who know about gardening and know about planning. You
probably could use their help as well to help you
all well structure on what where to put things and
how to put.

Speaker 4 (11:25):
Things well, that would be a help, but we.

Speaker 5 (11:29):
Are a learning garden, so we want people that if
you have a brown thumb may come out there.

Speaker 4 (11:35):
You may not know it. Just somebody need a little
watering and it'll turn back green.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
Oh that's good, and I'm glad that you are sharing
this information because.

Speaker 4 (11:46):
Thank you for the opportunity.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
Oh, you are welcome, career, because people may not know
that you all exist in frase exactly.

Speaker 4 (11:52):
I really appreciate this opportunity.

Speaker 5 (11:54):
Because again, we are seeking community partners sponsors. So every
year we do a Greens Cookoff, and this would have
been our fifth year, but because of our transition, we're
gonna hold off on the Greens Cookoff until next year
so that we can build our sponsorship up and take
care of some other things that we have we're going

(12:15):
through with the garden.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
Wait a minute, sister, now you.

Speaker 5 (12:19):
Yes, and I am the first Fraser Queen of Green.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
And the reason I say I love me some green. Yes,
so it's a turn of green to muster greens COmON
green all of them. Wait a minute, So you all
had a green cook that's a great idea.

Speaker 5 (12:39):
Yes, yes, so you all had a green cook off? Yes,
so when we first started the garden, we just sold
greens out there.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
And yeah, at the.

Speaker 5 (12:49):
Time, the dean at the University of Tennessee, he was
he loved greens. So we decided, well, wet in these greens,
We're gonna do a greens cookoff. And it just grew
from there and so like next year, Hey, this year,
everybody practice cooking your greens during the holidays and get ready.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
And so it doesn't matter what kind of greens.

Speaker 3 (13:15):
No.

Speaker 5 (13:16):
Only thing that we do acts is that they are
locally sourced. Ok yeah, yeah, Well then we do have
some gardens that we partnered with, like Black Seas Urban Farms,
the Fraser Urban Garden, even out on fifty one, they

(13:37):
sell greens that they got to this big field of
greens and you just go out there. You could pay
for a bag and hey, pick your greens. But yeah,
we prefer that they be locally sourced, and we do
vegan greens. We've had gumbo greens. We had somebody that
made I think they're called ampanadas. There was stuff with

(13:57):
the greens. Yes, we've had all kinds of girls.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
Okay, so next time you have I'm gonna have to
be a Judge on the.

Speaker 4 (14:06):
Well, I absolutely reach out to you.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
I love that idea. That is fabulous. Well, thank you
for sharing that because, like I said, some.

Speaker 1 (14:13):
Of my listeners probably didn't even know you will exist
the Fraser Community Urban Garden. Yeah, and I'm glad you
with you with with with Ashley and the City of Memphis.
We're gonna talk more about the taste of numphis going
to take up break.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
Look here carry you got me hungry some greens. I
want some greens.

Speaker 4 (14:32):
I'm sorry.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
We're gonna come back.

Speaker 1 (14:37):
If you have a question or two for our guests,
we do invite you to call nine zero one five
three five nine three four two eight hundred five zero
three nine three four two eight three three five three
five nine three four two will get you in to us.
We're talking about the taste of Memphis from the City

(15:00):
of Memphis. Next with me Bev Johnson on the BEB
Johnson Show.

Speaker 2 (15:07):
On double d i A.

Speaker 6 (15:11):
Whether you're in Memphis or in a sinkhole somewhere, thank
you for listening to the Bev Johnson Show on dou
W d I A Memphis BEVJ Show. You're listening to

(16:10):
the Bev Johnson Show here's Bev Johnson, and we're.

Speaker 1 (16:14):
Talking this afternoon with missus Ashley Cash, Director of Housing
and Community Development for the City of Memphis.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
Ms.

Speaker 1 (16:20):
Karen King with the Fraser Community Urban Garden and Ashley.
So it's the Taste of Memphis again and it's happening when.

Speaker 4 (16:31):
It is tomorrow tomorrow evening.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
Yes, yes, ready, Thursday evening.

Speaker 4 (16:37):
Thursday evening the eleven, Yes, all right, absolutely, So we'll
be at Tiger Lane. Very excited with the City of Memphis.
We've been doing this event, like I said, for about
eleven years and never ceases to amaze me how many
people come out and really want to have a great time.
We'll have live entertainment, so we'll have young actors, Gilt
rose Elle Elementary will be dancing, Neighborhood spot lights, the

(17:00):
Memphis Jazz Orchestra will be playing. Lamon and On Marching
Band will be there. They are great.

Speaker 2 (17:06):
I forgot Ashley, Yeah, Lamar and got a little margin.

Speaker 4 (17:09):
They were they were somewhere recently. I said, okay, yeah,
it was good. And then so we'll have some fun,
but we also will have some agencies present to just
share information. So our LED Department will be out helping
people to see how they might figure out if they've
got lead problems in their home and how we can

(17:30):
help address them. Memphis Housing Authority will be out to
just share a little bit about how you can sign
up for any information and be present there. And then
I know we've got some other agencies that will be
coming out to share information and really connect with people
in the community.

Speaker 1 (17:48):
So so when we say, when you're saying, Ashley, it's
a taste of Memphis, you're you will be highlighting different
things that are in our city.

Speaker 4 (18:00):
That is correct, different things in our city and our neighborhoods.
And really what a lot of people end up doing
is different neighborhood groups connect. You may be from Fraser,
you may be from East Memphis or Mintown, Orange Mound,
White Haven, so many other places. You really come in
talk to each other, get to see each other. Also,
what I like is we all are facing different challenges
within our communities and so somebody in Orange maund may

(18:23):
have figured out how to deal with this issue and
you can learn from them in your community. And so
we share ideas, share thoughts, and share resources and connections
during that time to really think about how we are
really tasting the full culture, spirit and neighborhood experience of Memphis.

Speaker 1 (18:41):
So different neighborhoods will be there. It is kind of
like they have their own little tables.

Speaker 4 (18:46):
That's right, they have their tables and booths. We got
about eighty I think signed up. We've got a great
delegation from Frasier. They always come out in big numbers.
Orange Mound being Hampton. We'll have some representation from Red Zone.
So we'll have some youth groups there as well in
the city's Community Affairs office. They normally come out just
to get connected and engaged. And then we'll have food trucks.

(19:08):
People love to eat, right right, yes, ma'am, and so
we'll have a couple of food options for people to
come out and really be participating. I think when we
first started we could kind of get one, maybe two
fold truck vendors, and now I think we're up to
four or five. And so people are really excited to
come out and just connect with their uh, their neighborhood

(19:30):
and other folks trying to do good in the city.

Speaker 1 (19:33):
So also along with that, Ashley, as you said, so
you will have resources there that people may need information
about different kinds of resources. I don't know how to
get this done in the city, that's correct.

Speaker 4 (19:46):
So people who are living with homes that maybe need
some repairs, they can come and get information. Uh, we
have information there around people who would be looking for
down payments. So new aspiring homeowners want to know how
am I going to come up with this X number
of dollars to pay? And so we'll have people there
to talk and share about down payment assistance. A lot
of times people want to know how to get a

(20:07):
neighborhood watch established, and so we'll have people that are
participating in that and just sharing information on how to
get better connected with the I think it's the community
portion from the police department, and so really just trying
to make those connections between things people want and need.
But they may not be coming down to a government building,

(20:29):
or they may not be just googling out there what
can I do about this? We were trying to pull
all of that into one central area so you can
learn a little bit about your neighborhood, you can meet
some new people, but then also you can get a
little bit of education around some issues that either you
or your family members or friends might be dealing with.

Speaker 1 (20:47):
And Also, since you all have been doing this, Ashley,
have you found that those neighborhoods and the people come out,
they have asked for questions like well you all need
to have this person here.

Speaker 4 (20:59):
Yes, as we get a lot of that, a lot
of referrals, make sure you reach out to so and
so so they can be here, make sure that you're
and so. I think this year we're doing trying to
do a little bit more of intentional tabling, so the
types of requests that we get. We get a lot
of requests day to day on home repair issues, on
down payment assistance need and so just really trying to

(21:21):
marry those requests and the actual need with what is
out there and what is available. When I'm out and
about it, and I'm sure others there are a lot
of people that I always talk about small business and
economic development, and so we'll have people to share information
on at least what the city is doing around small business,
how we can help or support in some of our

(21:41):
grant programs that we may have available to support various
economic development efforts.

Speaker 1 (21:47):
And also I know a lot of times a big
issue and you know by being on here with me,
actually that a lot of people want to know are
their things that I don't know. You all may have
this because a lot of things that seniors may need, right,
you know, and because seniors they need a lot and
they don't know where to turn to.

Speaker 4 (22:06):
Absolutely and so and we've we have heard this definitely
over the last year accessibility. So I've got a lot
of calls and emails about ramps, people who can't leave
their home because they're now in a wheelchair and they
can't get down. And so, uh, we we're actually the city,
through h CD will be starting a rehab an accessibility

(22:26):
program hopefully in the next couple of.

Speaker 1 (22:29):
No, I don't know mentioned that because I was thinking
not to excuse me cutting you off, because yesterday I
had United Housing one. So they were talking about, you know,
how they're working with lists and how they're getting things
like you know, handicapped huh maybe a senior citizen. You know,
now you can't get into your bathroom, so you may do.

Speaker 4 (22:50):
So that's right. Yeah, So nine on one Help, which
actually is a program that we help support as well. Uh,
but you can go to nine on one Help dot
org or call our office six three six seventy three
hundred and get more information. But yes, they're making repairs
and modifications available for seniors. We can call in and
say here's my need. I need a ramp. A lot

(23:11):
of times we see ramps. We see where you need
a walk in shower. You may need like a little
a spacer to raise the toilet up. But things that
just people don't think about until they're in certain situations,
either with the disability or have some mobility challenges. And
so we're trying to through our partners, work on those
types of challenges as well.

Speaker 2 (23:32):
So that is always good information.

Speaker 1 (23:35):
I love how how you all are doing this with
the taste of Memphis. You're having different communities come out
and showcasing their communities, but also actually you're giving people information.
You're educating people as well as care and you're gonna
have fun.

Speaker 4 (23:51):
Yeh, that's right, that's right. You gotta make it fun.
You gotta make it fun. We want to draw the
people out, like you say, educate, share the information, but
really make it fun and lighthearted. We all have so
much stress day to day and so neighborhoods and neighborhood
work can be challenging, and so really it tastes of Memphis.
It's all those things, education, fun, excitement, and a night
to just relax, see what others have to offer, explore

(24:13):
your community, and just really get together and have a
great time.

Speaker 2 (24:16):
Now again it is starting at what time?

Speaker 4 (24:18):
It'll be at five pm Tiger Lane September eleventh, tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (24:22):
Again, just don't go home, come just come on out
coming out to Tiger Lane.

Speaker 4 (24:28):
Yes, absolutely, come on out and we'll have back to
back performances. May Young will be speaking at the beginning.
And he's a neighborhood guy. He loves the community and
so we're excited to have him.

Speaker 1 (24:39):
Okay, good And I was gonna ask you, Karen, so
will you'll be out there so you'll be telling people
about what's happening in Fraser.

Speaker 4 (24:46):
Absolutely.

Speaker 5 (24:47):
One of the things that I like about the Taste
of Memphis it does showcase the resources that's in those
particular neighborhoods, like we partner with Legacy, Legend of Legacy,
a god b A a firm, just you know, different
organizations that are out there that a lot of people

(25:08):
don't know. There are resources in the neighborhoods and if
you don't know about them, or you would like to
know about them. The Taste of Memphis would be the
place to be.

Speaker 2 (25:17):
Oh good, good, good and and fun.

Speaker 1 (25:22):
Yes, so they can bring oh yes, bring the kids in.
People may think, well, it's for adults, but we have
a whole kid area.

Speaker 4 (25:35):
I forgot to mention, but yes, kids on. We try
to have different games. Last year we had movies and
video games. I think this year we'll have some games
set up for people in the the whatever the truck
is when you go in and play video games or
the gaming truck. And so yeah, it's fun for everybody.
And we make sure while mom and dad and grandma
are getting information, the kids are entertained, they're safe, they're well,

(25:58):
the layout is great. You can just turn and see
your kid, no matter which part of the area you're at.
And so yes, we want to make sure that it's
family friendly, uh, senior friendly, young adult friendly, everybody. If
you follow in any of those categories or somewhere in between,
Taste of memphisis for you.

Speaker 2 (26:14):
And it's that a good place.

Speaker 4 (26:16):
Tiger Lane, Yes, it's not open, centrally located, and it's
right next to the new Memphis Sports and Events Complex,
which is beautiful.

Speaker 1 (26:23):
So that's that's the I'm glad you because I was
going to ask you. Because Tiger Lane is big, so you'll.

Speaker 2 (26:29):
Be over there by the new sports.

Speaker 4 (26:31):
We'll be on actual Tiger Lane.

Speaker 2 (26:33):
You will be on Tiger Lane.

Speaker 4 (26:35):
Okay, okay, right on Tiger Lane.

Speaker 2 (26:37):
Good good.

Speaker 1 (26:38):
We are talking with missus Ashley Cash and Karen King
getting ready for tomorrow evening's Taste of Memphis again. If
you have questions or two for them, we do invite
you to call nine zero one five three, five, nine

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
