(04:24):
in the here. Hey, hey, brother, I'm getting ready to

Speaker 4 (04:41):
How you doing, Bishop, I am doing wonderful and you
are looking amazing well, thank you.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Hey, hey, Bishon, I'm holding on for a cougar.
Speaker 5 (04:52):
I'm with you now. I'm trying to find out what
that restaurant is you just got to talk about.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
I'm gonna tell I'm gonna tell you, Bishop, and now
you know because you're a Memphian.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Yes, I'm gonna tell you where what.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
What it used to be? It used to be the
old Hawaiian Aisle. Okay, remember Elvis Bellevue right there at
South Park Bay, the old Hawaiian Eye. But now Bishop,
it's called the Rocking Chair of Memphis.
Speaker 5 (05:18):
I'm gonna check it out for.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
You're gonna love it, hey, Bishop. On Sundays, them bishops
and them pastors be coming up in there on Sunday dinner.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
And and and.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Bishop, you will you will really love this because uh
the owner and when you go in the they have
a mural outside and they have put on the mirror,
you know, just famous.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
People in Memphis.
Speaker 5 (05:41):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
And I was honored myself and Bobby O. J. They
got us on w D I and nat D.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
So you gotta go tell your folks now, I'm.
Speaker 5 (05:53):
We're gonna do it.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
And especially when you folks come in there for the complications.
Speaker 5 (05:57):
That's right now. They really if it's on Elvis, they
gonna deinely hit it.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
Oh yes, it's Elvis Presco.
Speaker 5 (06:02):
They're going to hit it. If it's on Elvis Press.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
I love that. I love Mischa Porter. How you been doing.
Speaker 4 (06:06):
If I'm doing exceptionally well, I'm thankful, just working hard
and doing ministry.
Speaker 5 (06:10):
You know how we do, we will never stop. I
got that from my mom and my daddy.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
I know, I know you. You come from good stock.
That's right, you come from good stock.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
So Bishop, so do you still have because I know
used to say two locations.
Speaker 5 (06:24):
I do.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
I do actually fifty one fifty one Winchester and then
of course we still have the historical North campus nine
twenty four North down Lap at the corner of Chelsea.
But we just acquired a new property across the street
from our Winchester campus, six acres fifty seven thousand square
foot building where we're going to have the big Christmas
in November.
Speaker 5 (06:44):
Event. That's what we're going to do most about outreach. Wow, yes, I.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Know exactly where you're talking about.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
You know what you know, Bishop, I lived in that
community and I don't know if you remember years.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
Ago where the school is down the street.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
No no, no, no, no no no right right, well
when you cross over Minden Hall, what is that school?
Speaker 5 (07:06):
I know this new power power center Power center.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Yes, well that used to be apartments, the Harbor apartment
all right.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
I lived there.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Wow, I used to live there and so I would
go shopp at the pigmy weeky.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
Matter of fact, that's where I used to cash my chick.
Speaker 5 (07:21):
I'm with you.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
So you all have that property.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
Yes, actually you know that's what we bought fifty one
fifty one. It's where our main campus is. Yes, that
was ninety nine and the Holy Spirit said to me,
called a look cross Street and the address there was
fifty two to fifty two, and he said to me,
that's twenty five years ago.
Speaker 5 (07:37):
He said, that's going to be Phase two.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
And it took twenty five years, but it happened and
we're thankful. So it's fifty two to fifty two Winchester
and our campus. Our church is fifty one fifty one,
so God is still working in that one.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
God is still working.
Speaker 5 (07:50):
Yes, six acres we're excited about.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
Oh, I love that pastor were good.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Well, before we talk about Christmas in November, you know,
Bishop Porter, I got it.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
I gotta ask, y'all.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
It is next month is November, and we always know
in the city of Memphis, November the Church of God
in Christ. That's right, y'all, members come come to this city.
That's the holy convocation, Holy convocations. So y'alla, we are
we are well.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
You know, we worked vehemently and previously trying to get
it back. We were in Saint Louis for about eleven
years and Bishop Blake asked me to head a committee
with Bishop Sheard and I to work towards getting the
convention back. And of course we were successful and this
has been our This coming will be our third year
(08:39):
back and Bishop Sheared.
Speaker 5 (08:40):
Wants to remain here.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
But we got some tweaking to do in Memphis and
had a meaningful study and some stuff. You know, because
we bring so much you do that is that impacts
the economy in totality, from hotels to restaurants to rental
cars to businesses, and many businesses, as you well know,
because we've been coming one hundred years, they started their
(09:03):
businesses during the convocation because they knew of the capital
or they would gain from it.
Speaker 5 (09:07):
But it's not fair for us to have.
Speaker 4 (09:10):
To pay extra fees because you're calling November peak season.
Because we bring so many people, and our convention is
longer than most conventions.
Speaker 5 (09:19):
It's like twelve days. It used to be three weeks
years ago.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
Wow, they were praying a long time, then three weeks
and so, and we bring some you know, back back
in the day, we'll bring it at least for my
dad was over a lot of the conventions. We will
bring at least fifty million dollars in a week. And
a lot of people, you know, are doing streaming and
stuff now, so it's roughly about thirty or forty million
that we bring within one week's time to the city
(09:46):
of Memphis. And we're just trying to tell the hotels
and I met with them and they were very, very
listening and trying to work with us. Kevin Kine with
the city of course, and the mayor was there and
many others and our officials and the Tennessee bishops were there,
and we're asking them to reduce the prices a little
with the hotels so our delegates will feel like they're
getting something back, you know. Yeah, and they need it
(10:07):
because it hits them hard. They got to stay here
so many days exactly. If you give them thirty dollars
off the room a day, that's impactful, you know. Yes,
So that's what we're trying to do, and they're trying
to work towards that because we don't want Saint Louis.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
Is after us hard again.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
Yes, they want us bad, they want baby. They doing
they frying fish, They doing everything. They got, They got
everything but turcular, not till Memphis got the turculate right,
But they're trying to best with their hotel adjustments and rates.
So we need Memphis to do that, and our city
council members are trying to talk with hotels as well
as our mayor and our Convention Business Bureau to make
(10:42):
sure that we can do this.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
So, so, Bishop, ported in your talks you've had so far,
do they seem receptive of what you're asking?
Speaker 5 (10:51):
They really do. It's all about you know, relationships.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
Yes, it is.
Speaker 4 (10:54):
When my dad was doing this. You know, he knew
everybody and walk right up into the hotel owners or
or even the manager's offices and make those arrangements. Because
success happens at the speed of relationship. And so that's
what I was trying to do, is to get everybody
together so we know each other. And I think now
with myself and Bishop Hall, Bishop Maynard, and Bishop Jerry Taylor,
(11:16):
Bishop Lynnwood Dial and other bishops right here in the
city of Memphis, Bill right and others, we'll be able
to keep those relationships going. And the city will know
because we use these hotels all year long. Yes, but
we want them to know. We need you to treat
our people right when they come in November so they
keep coming.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
And I think that when I think about the Church
of God in Christ, when you come to the Holy Convocation,
those years that we missed y'all. Oh yes, I mean
when you all left. I'm telling you, City of Memphis
missed y'all. I don't care what they say about but
they missed y'all.
Speaker 4 (11:52):
And we need that economy that that impact. You know,
with all this the lawsuits that are happening in our city,
they're gonna need that inflection money. Not only that, but
then the spiritual death and the people that we bring.
And so y'all don't see no hats like our hats
until we come back, you know.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
So yeah, yeah, you know what you know.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
But this reporter, when we were downtown on Union Avenue,
we would love just to look after winded you see
them saints.
Speaker 5 (12:19):
With about I missed that, yes, and.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
When you all when when you all, when you all left,
we missed that. But anyway, but like you said, they
came in town and spent money.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
And you know what I found out? Crime is down
when we're here. Wow, crime is down, really, And I
was because I was really concerned, like y'all be carjacking
around here? Yeah, exactly right. The Saints gonna lay hands
on you and a couple of feet. But anyway, so
but crime is down now and maybe because of our
Chief Davis and others have been raising the bar of policing,
(12:54):
especially downtown when.
Speaker 5 (12:55):
We're here and so and so all of that is
is meaningful for us.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
So so when so again, the convocation is back in November.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
Yes, what other dates?
Speaker 4 (13:05):
The dates are the fifth through like the twelfth official
day is the tenth, that's when I'm presiding, Bishop speaks
on that Sunday morning, but we start officially on the fifth,
that's Tuesday, I believe, and we'll be at Mason Temple
for opening and so on, and this prayer leading up
to it as well. The Saints are fasting and praying
always leading up to the Holy Convocation.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
There.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
You know, there's musicals, there's a pre musical. Let me
mention there's a pre musical on and Elder Zach Hasselett,
who's my minister music, is over that pre musical. Myron
Williams is our national Minister of music out of Texas.
But that's going to be on Sunday evening I think
at six pm at Greater Community Temple on Winchester Winchester Campus, Okay,
(13:48):
And you know it's free for all to get in.
But that's the pre music like they've had for many
many years exactly. And the Evanger's apartment I think is
doing something. But then their service is ongoing all the time.
As I'm great speakers have been a slot for slated
should I say, for this conference and music and so on,
and I'm chosen to speak to Ben watch yourself. Yes,
(14:09):
I'm gonna now I'm gonna speak on official day night,
that Sunday night.
Speaker 5 (14:14):
Presiding Bishop speaks that morning.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
But he said to me, I want you to close
the meeting out porter, So y'all pray my.
Speaker 5 (14:20):
Strength in the Lord. It's be a long week, y'all.
I hope I can talk that that night, but I
believe God.
Speaker 4 (14:26):
But it's gonna be Sunday night at seven, and that's
all at the Renaissance Center.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
I was going to ask you, you all will be
all in the Renaissance.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
Yes, yes, the Fedix form is a challenge for us
now with staging because of platform usage and just our
culture of how we sit people on our stage.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
Yes.
Speaker 5 (14:42):
And also those clear bags Saints you know.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
Oh yeah, that's no trouble.
Speaker 5 (14:47):
I ain't seen no clear Louis Vuittons yet.
Speaker 3 (14:50):
And so when you do, you let me know.
Speaker 5 (14:52):
Right.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
So, so we're gonna and then we have the Mason
Temple will still be accommodating for that Sunday morning as
well as as the Cannon Center. So we'll be at
the main auditorium in the Renaissance Center and then we'll
be at the Cannon Center. It was simulcasting in that
Mason Temple as well. And there's also some transportation opportunities
(15:14):
that the city has helped us to get from the
hotels that are kind of far out.
Speaker 5 (15:17):
That's another thing.
Speaker 4 (15:18):
We needed more rooms downtown, yeah, you know, and Memphis
just you know.
Speaker 3 (15:22):
We don't have a lot of hotels maybe other.
Speaker 5 (15:25):
See this city is a beating us.
Speaker 4 (15:26):
So it's a good thing that the city has decided
to take on the Sherrington because that's going to be
a goodbye for the city and and and for it
to be successful because it needs a lot of work.
But they need Memphis to be here, you know, bringing
that that capital there to help impact as the conference hotels.
Speaker 3 (15:45):
So we need that, we need that.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
Yes, well, I was thinking when and when I was
thinking I was going to have you as guests and
to talk about the convocation, Yes, and I was going
to ask you about moving in, and I wanted to
ask this question, sure, Bishop, have you all ever thought
about going to Detroit.
Speaker 5 (16:04):
Presid I haven't because I don't know.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
I know about the history of Detroit up there.
Speaker 4 (16:11):
And it's some snow up there too, and we ain't
trying to go nowhere where those snow is for the convocation,
you know.
Speaker 3 (16:17):
So see they can put them for a coach.
Speaker 4 (16:20):
On baby, they'll kill something to put on just for
that that week. But no, I you know it's that
they think about that presiding bishops from Detroit. So and
you know, but we have other meetings. We just had
our Bishop's Conference there so and that's the other thing
about Coach is that we have eight other big conferences
that move around, like our Women's Convention, our aim Convention,
(16:43):
our Passing the Elders, our Bishop's Conference, and and so
many of us that move around. And so, but Memphis
is our is our Jerusalem. So that's where the Holy
Convocation should be every year and if it's uh, if
it's feasible, and we want to continue the feasibility of
it and accommodating the Saints, and not only just the hotels,
(17:04):
but you all that own stores and restaurants have some
specials on for the Saints.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
Well you know what, See, I'm gonna tell, tell, tell,
tell my brother at the rocking chair. Please we're gonna
I'm telling you now, you can you can count on this.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
We're gonna have something for the Saints.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
Please don't tell brother, I'm putting it out because see,
they gotta do something.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
See Ron listens to me, does he.
Speaker 5 (17:27):
Well, those chairs will never stop rocking if he make
the price right.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
Hell, I want you.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
Hey, We're gonna have the prices right, and we gonna
welcome those Saints there at the rocking chair business.
Speaker 3 (17:39):
I'm telling you.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
So he has plenty room in a nice big patio,
so them Saints can come on in there. Okay, okay,
I'm making you that promise.
Speaker 4 (17:49):
I thank you because we have a few of our members,
uh you know, Southern Hands the Church, Yes, I know.
Also Honod's Barbecue downtown, Honor Payman and Mike Onnold and
so they do some special things. So I want to
encourage all the restaurants and stores because the Saints like
the shop.
Speaker 5 (18:06):
When they get here. Yea, they do.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
They do do.
Speaker 4 (18:08):
Something for the Saints. We want them to keep coming.
We do want them to keep coming.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
So we're gonna have some form at the rocking Cheer.
Now they're gonna be in their rocket bell.
Speaker 5 (18:17):
Have you got me all excited about the rockets? I
gotta check it out.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
Well, you got to check it out if you've just
tuned in this afternoon, we are talking to Bishop Brandon Porter.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
He is here.
Speaker 5 (18:29):
We're gonna be.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
Talking about Christmas in no members, so you all stick
in state for that. If you have a question or
two for the bishop, we do invite you to call
nine zero one five three five, nine three four two
eight hundred five zero three nine three four to two
eight three three five three five nine three four two
(18:52):
will get you in to us. You're listening to double
you d I A the bath Just say and show.
Speaker 6 (19:11):
You're listening to Tennessee Radio Hall of Famer Bev Johnson
on w d i A. You're listening to the Bev
(20:06):
Johnson Show. Here's Bev Johnson.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
And welcome back.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
We are talking with the Greater Community Temple pastor and
a Kojak General board member, Bishop Brandon Porter. And I
know Bishop Porter, you are getting ready. What is this
Christmas in Nomber.
Speaker 4 (20:25):
Christmas in November, Bev? It is incredible. We've been doing
it for many, many years in the Church of God
in Christ and I'm excited that I was asked by
the presiding Bishop to continue it. When we came back
to Memphis, I never stopped doing outry, so we changed
the name and called it Miracles and Memphis. We had
the guy deboiled from Fridays and others that came in
(20:46):
and other actors and celebrities. But now that Koji gets
back for this will be our third year having it
again and it's incredible that our presiding Bishop wants to
give back to the city.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
Before the convention starts.
Speaker 4 (20:58):
It used to be in the middle of convention on
that Saturday before official Day, but we have some other
functions going on now.
Speaker 5 (21:03):
But it's all good. It's working out.
Speaker 4 (21:05):
We had last year over eighty five hundred people to
pre register while they went to Christmas at November dot
org and signed up to get items or to volunteer
the services, to make donations or what have you. This
year we're looking at ten thousand people already. Wow, and
it's going to be incredible because we have a lot
(21:25):
of stuff. We have a lot of donations, we have
a lot of money we have to spend and so
a lot of people are contributing. But we've been shopping
for the last month, okay, and all kinds of items.
It would blow your mind to see what kind of thing.
So we'll getting wear, food, okay, clothing, toys for kids,
a lot of toys. We have appliances, furniture and even
(21:47):
household goods, and they'll get like lives ale and other
kind of products to pace and the men can get
some Gillette shaving. It's just a lot of good stuff
to give families and people that have needs. They didn't
even get hot dogs right there while they're way during registration.
So the event now people lined up out. There's early
six o'clock.
Speaker 5 (22:04):
In the morning. Wow, But we don't start.
Speaker 4 (22:06):
Registration that is receiving people at the tables until eight
that morning. So but the event will start around nine
with great music. Zach's got great music for us. A
lot of choirs coming through as well, and then we'll
have our officials. A mayor's going to be there as
well as some other city officials, just coming to greet
(22:26):
the people and encourage them even in voting and so
in early voting and all that stuff or for voting
that for the fifth but so much is being given
to the people. Then fed X came last year. Guess
what they gave out six hundred jobs on the spot.
It's yes, and Man's hm. You know, Man's Mans is
over recruiting and he's coming back again this year with others.
(22:48):
And they said they're going to give out a thousand jobs. Wow,
fed X right there on the grounds, and that's exceptional
because FedEx has great benefits. And then they pay five
thousand dollars a year towards your tuition if you go
to University of Memphis, so you can't beat that. And
we got other vendors that come and offer services, and
it's just a wonderful opportunity for the people. They're gonna
(23:10):
everybody leaves with something, nobody, no family will be left behind, okay,
And so we just want to encourage you. Go to
Christmas and novema dot org. You can see all about it.
You can register your family. I hope they hadn't closed registrations,
getting closer shutting it down.
Speaker 5 (23:23):
But even if registration.
Speaker 4 (23:24):
Is closed, you can still walk up, but you'll be,
you know, at the back of the line and get
in front of people that have.
