and y'all know what month this is. I always will

(01:31):
say when we think about September, we're getting ready.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Yeah, and as always, my sister friends, they come on through.

They've been doing it, doing it.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
The Coalition of one hundred Black women have always been
a part of the Southern Heritage Classic and they're back
again for twenty twenty five for their Southern Heritage Classic
Fashion Show.

Speaker 3 (01:59):
Direct Joy Truly Brown is back in the house. Hey Joy,
how are you?

Speaker 4 (02:04):
Hey beb I'm doing good.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
Y' y'all back in the hand.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
We are back again with the Southern Heritage Classic.

Speaker 5 (02:11):
Yes, yes, yes, yes, the Southern Heritage Classic Fashion Show.
We will once again be putting fashion on the runway
in the city of Memphis.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Yeah, before we talk about that, Yes, and I always
you know and you know, joy a lot our listeners
know that when we talk about the Coalition of.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
One hundred Black Women, who are y'all and what do
you do?

Speaker 5 (02:32):
The National Coalition of one Hundred Black Women is an
advocacy group in the City of Memphis. This is an
organization of Black women. We are advocating on the behalf
of young girls and women in our community in the programming, education,

(02:53):
economic empowerment, and political activism of the City of Memphis.

Speaker 4 (03:00):
We are really just in the community.

Speaker 5 (03:02):
We're wanting to make sure that we are fighting for
the rights of young Black girls and young Black women
to bring a diverse look into their background and be
able to bring programming to them that they otherwise may
not be able to get.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Yeah, and you all have been doing that a long time.

Speaker 4 (03:21):
A very long time. Yes.

Speaker 5 (03:23):
Public policy is one of our other major components. We
go to the Capitol, we fight for those rights. We're
right there. We have a great social activist department and
program that we really want to be boots on the
ground and working for those women to get them the

(03:43):
things that they really need.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
And one of the things, Joy, I know that you
all do that I love is that you do provide scholarship.

Speaker 5 (03:53):
Yes, yes, yes, we are so fortunate that a former president,
Patricia Walker Shaw start started the first initiative to give
women scholarships so that they could go back and get
an education. This actually started out as a post secondary
scholarship program where women that had to leave school or

(04:15):
were not able to go to school for whatever reason.
You know, back then life was life into so if
you had to leave for any reason but wanted to
go back, she wanted to make sure that there was
no barrier stopping you. So the Patricia Wakashaw Scholarship Foundation
was started, and since that time, we have given scholarships

(04:36):
to high school women, young girls. We've given scholarships to
high school graduates. Even non traditional scholarships have been forgiven.
So it's been a really great program and a big
part of what we are really raising funds to do.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
And the coalition I know has been bu working really hard.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
Yeah, I know. And are you still.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
Getting people, joy women people, but women who are joining
the coalition, Yeah, you still get We are still open,
open up to women.

Speaker 5 (05:16):
Yes, it is still we actively recruit, We actively seek
out those women that want to be a part of
the community, those women that want to join the force
and the advocacy work that we're doing. We always will
have an open arms policy to come in and be
a part of the growth that the coalition is doing.

(05:37):
So there are initiative calls. We have membership department that
handles the curriculum for new members. We will have a
new member social gathering where you can come in and
just kind of see what we're doing and learn about
what we're doing, everything about it, and then decide if
you want to be a part of the organization.

Speaker 4 (05:58):
So that is ongoing.

Speaker 1 (05:59):
Okay, okay, because because I know this organization and I
remember when the chapter came to Memphis, yephis chapter. Yes,
but but but you all, this this organization is across
the country.

Speaker 5 (06:13):
It is This is not just Memphis, This is not
even just Shelby County, Tried State, Tennessee. This is a
nationwide organization that was actually started in New York and
just flourished. We have multiple hundreds of chapters throughout the
United States and multiple chapters in certain states and cities.

Speaker 4 (06:35):
So it's it's worldwide. It's large.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
Yeah. Yeah, well, you know, women are gonna do the thing.

Speaker 4 (06:41):
Women gonna we're gonna do.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
We're gonna do what we need to do, what we
need to do to take care of We're gonna.

Speaker 5 (06:46):
Take care of the community, take care of business, and
take care of families, and then we're gonna make sure
we're taking care of us.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
I love it.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
Yes, Yes, as we think about coming up, and as
I said, when we think about September, we think about
the Southern Heritage Classic, and y'all, yeah, it's still on.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
It is not.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
Usually it's the second Saturday in September. This year they
had to change it so it will be at the
end of the month, September twenty seventh. Correct, And let
me say this, Joy before you you tell what you
all are doing. That tickets are now on sale y'all
for the game, so you can go over to the
Simmons Liberty Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. I'm going to get

(07:31):
that right, Hey, I get it, Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
You all can go in and purchase your tickets this
year for the Southern Heritage Classic. Now the teams that
are playing are Pine Bluff, Arkansas, University of Arkansas Pine Bluff,

(07:54):
and all corn State University out of Mississippi. Those are
our teams, Mississippi and Arkansas playing and they are playing.
So you can go to the stadium now and get
your ticket for the game. To Joy, I'd like to say,
HBCU school schools. Yes, yes, yes, so all always during

(08:18):
the Southern Heritage Classic, y'all, the coalition of one hundred
Black women have always had that fashion show.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
Yes, well, Joey, y'all back again.

Speaker 4 (08:28):
We are back again.

Speaker 5 (08:30):
We are so proud and earned to continue to be
a support of this just wonderful day, wonderful community day
where you can come out and we just want to
come and do our part. So we are once again
having the Southern Heritage Classic Fashion Show this year. We're

(08:51):
just kind of doing something a little different.

Speaker 4 (08:53):
Oh yeah, different. We have a new location.

Speaker 5 (08:58):
What Yes, we are at the Hallerin Center of the
Performing Arts this year, downtown Memphis, part of the Orphium Theater.
We are that facility is right next door. It is
a part of the Orpheum Theater and we will be
there on stage this year. Really excited about it. It

(09:20):
will be on September the twenty seven, so it is
in the morning. Doors open at nine will have vendors
and you can come in still do your vendor shop
and then enjoy some wonderful fashions. This year the theme
is Tea Time Elegance, Wow T Time, T Time Elegance

(09:43):
and BELLV. It's really gonna take us back to that
time where women just really they dressed a certain way
and it was called tea room modeling, So you didn't
have the big bravado of the stage and the runway.

Speaker 4 (09:58):
You hit all of the bells.

Speaker 5 (09:59):
And whistles, but you just kind of walked through and
the women got to see you up close and personal.
And this time we're gonna do something very similar, but
it's gonna be on the stage. So we're gonna give
you a great performance on stage still with some great fashions.
We have some wonderful boutiques Lavish to the collective suits,

(10:21):
you Mara styles. They're gonna all bring top of the
line fashions in Memphis and we're gonna put it on
the stage for everyone this year.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
Joy I love this idea because I just had a light.

Speaker 3 (10:35):
Bulb went up out here.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
I think about back in the day when the Ebony.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
Fashion Fair came, they modeled on the stage.

Speaker 4 (10:46):
We're taking it back.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
Was at the Orpheum Theater and those models were on
the stage.

Speaker 4 (10:52):
They were on stage.

Speaker 5 (10:53):
They didn't have the runway and everything. We're taking it
back to that. We really wanted to make sure that
the year, on top of everything else, we showed the
true love of fashion. Just really that instance where you
see something on the stage that you just love. The
way women can just come and get dressed and again

(11:16):
put on their best and just come out and enjoy.
It's just gonna be really really and I'm excited about
what we have to offer this year.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
You know what, joy And so.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
People who come to the fashion show this year, you're
going downtown.

Speaker 3 (11:33):
I love this. They'll have everything except the brunch.

Speaker 5 (11:38):
It will be everything except the brunch, although we may
have a little special.

Speaker 3 (11:48):
Don't say it what she said, I'm.

Speaker 4 (11:50):
Not saying it. But we want to make sure that
it's still special.

Speaker 5 (11:54):
So we are working on how we can still make
it a special treat for everyone.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
Oh good, Yes, So this year, y'all. If you heard
Joyce said, usually back in the day they were at
a hotel last year, you all the Grace House.

Speaker 3 (12:08):
A couple of years you did the Grace.

Speaker 4 (12:09):
Yeah, a couple of years we did the guest house
at Gracey guest House.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
But now they're taking it to the stage. I like that.
The stage to the Hallerin Downtown.

(13:57):
are you.

Speaker 6 (14:00):

Speaker 6 (14:10):
I'm glad to day I as Joy.

Speaker 4 (14:12):
Hi, how are you?

Speaker 1 (14:15):
I'm doing fine.

Speaker 6 (14:16):
I just want to tell you I've attended several of
the fashion shows and they all have been break and
I hear that you're going to be doing something a
little different instead of the runaway, They're gonna be all
stay so that should be interesting. But I just want
to commend you. Last year at the guest House was awesome.

Speaker 4 (14:37):
Thank you so much for that. We really appreciate the support.

Speaker 6 (14:41):
That You're awesome and the staff that worked in the
dining area, you know, doing time to serve the food.
Oh man, they were so professional and so attentive. I mean,
that was one of the best ones that I have

(15:01):
a tenant, I've attendant. You know, several of I've been,
you know, had been to the Revance Center. That was
nice with the Gracehouse. It was off Chaine. So I'll
see you are doing something little this year. And the
models about being on the state, so that should be interesting.
I might check that out, I guess being going on,

(15:23):
but I may check it out. But you are doing
good work, you know, the Coalition one hundred Black Women,
you all really do a lot of good things, and uh,
just keep it up. Let's keep up what you're doing.

Speaker 5 (15:36):
Thank you so far, so much for that. We appreciate
your support, and we do hope that you join us
this year. It is going to be an awesome fashion show,
so please come out if you can. But thank you
so much for those words of encouragement and the support
that you've given us over the years.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
All right, and Beverly, you know, and I was just
telling Joy, I was just thinking about it.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
I remember all those years that when the Any.

Speaker 1 (16:00):
Fashion Affair came to town, they were down at the
Opium on stage.

Speaker 3 (16:04):
Yeah, so they didn't have a runway. They they worked
that stage. So this should be.

Speaker 6 (16:10):
Good, yeah the friend Yeah, okay, alright.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
All right, yeah, joy this this is going to be
be fabulous. And it's something different. And we know I
say this all the time, Jory. Some things changed changed
and we have to go with and that's okay.

Speaker 4 (16:31):
Yes it is.

Speaker 5 (16:32):
And we are making sure that even though we are changing,
we still want to bring that same excellence that we've
always brought. So no matter if we're on the runway
or whatever we're doing, you're still gonna get the excellent
and the utmost professional fashion show and service that we

(16:52):
can give as the national Coalition of one hundred Black women.

Speaker 1 (16:55):
And and we always say this even though you know
you've always been part of the Southern heritage. But also
the money that you get you help your scholarships.

Speaker 5 (17:04):
We are the funds that we raise from this fashion show.
This is how we give those young girls the scholarship
money that they need. We give over twenty scholarships every
single year. The dollars and the funds that we collect
not only from the fashion of but just donations in general, it.

Speaker 4 (17:25):
Helps us do the work that we need to do.

Speaker 5 (17:28):
So it's really wonderful to be able to give more
and more scholarships every year. And we can only do
that with the support of the community by supporting what
we're doing. And the fashion show is the main component
of those funds that we raise for the scholarship program.

Speaker 1 (17:44):
I love it. I love it, and so come on
out and support support the coalition of one hundred Black
women and with their program, and again enjoy one last time.
Tell our listeners the date, time, where it's going to be,
and how they can get tickets.

Speaker 5 (18:03):
Yes, first, Bell, I like to recognize our president, Deborah River.
She has been a driving force and really one of
the key components. Also our second vice president, Wendy Jackson.
She is actually the chair this year. I am serving
as the co chair and the fashion show coordinator. So
I really want to make sure I give them their

(18:25):
reverence and lift them up with this. But the fashion
show will be once again on Saturday, September twenty seventh
at the Hollering Center of the Performing Arts. That address
is two twenty five South Main Street. If you know

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
