Speaker 5 (06:10):
It wasn't for long this year.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Yeah, it was. It was long.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
They had some new folks, but it was really good.
It was good and and and the weather was good,
so we were good.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Regina.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
It was a pretty day, pretty much pretty. So we'll
be on the Bill Street parade though. We'll be in
the Bill Street Now when is when is that?
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Regina?
Speaker 5 (06:30):
It's a week from next Saturday, so I think it's
the thirteenth or the twelfth, let me see, okay. Uh
so it's the thirteenth at two o'clock Bell Street, So
that's the one.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
I need one so I can wave to you.
Speaker 5 (06:48):
Our little group.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Right.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Sounds good, sounds good well, Regina.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
Today we are having November Wallet Warning, and what's the
information on today?
Speaker 5 (07:01):
The information today is about Medicare quote advantage unquote plans. Wow.
And so we try to give everybody a little update
every year. This time of year, you know, a time
of years to sign up for Medicare time. Yeah, and
so it's Medicare open enrollment time and you get inundated
(07:24):
from October fifteenth to December seventh with all these people
telling you how you need to sign up for Medicare
and change your plan and go look at all these
Medicare advantage plans. So we want to let everybody know
again that there are thirty five million senior citizens enrolled
on Medicare and they are in Medicare quote advantage in
(07:49):
quote plans. So that's about half of all of Medicare
recipients are not in traditional Medicare, they're in Medicare advantage plans,
which are private insurance. I want to make sure everybody
understands how this works. Okay, So this is the time
of year you can make changes. And this is why
(08:11):
you see all these famous people on TV telling you
how great Medicare advantage plans are. Okay, but they are
not traditional Medicare. So this is a different kind of billing.
It's private insurance. They can change it. They can cut
out benefits, they can raise your premiums, they can raise
your deductibles. It's not like Medicare. So we want to
(08:36):
make sure that everybody really looks into what's best for them.
So this is the most important thing. These are private
companies getting private plans to you which to get reimbursed
by Medicare. Okay, it's not original Medicare. And so the
issue in this coming year, and has been for about
(09:00):
a year now, is that these plans are requiring more
and more pre authorizations, which are not easy to come by.
So they're getting harder and harder to get. And over
the last several years, more Medicare advantage plan users than
expected use their benefits to get their medical care. And
(09:21):
one would assume that companies would expect your beneficiaries to
use their benefits. But after years of making all these
wonderful profits, these insurance companies that own these plans are
reacting by downsizing the plans, cutting benefits, increasing call pays,
(09:42):
raising prescription drug deductibles. In other words, you're being penalized
for using your plan. So it's and this is the
healthcare you're paying for it, so you really need to
look at it very closely in the coming year. So
the number two and number three on the market in
Medicare quote advantage are Humana and CBS, and they are
(10:06):
slashing benefits. They are canceling plans with too many members
who use the benefits. They're closing less profitable healthcare plans
that serve a half a million or more senior citizens,
forcing them to sign up for other, more expensive or
less coverage plans. And Humanita is about to leave thirteen
(10:26):
markets around the country, affecting five hundred and sixty thousand beneficiaries. Wow,
I know, And they will only offer coverage in forty
six states instead of forty eight. And the financial officers
of both of these plans have publicly stated it's because
they aren't making enough profit. So Medicare is not out
(10:51):
there to make a private Medicare advantage is okay, And
so these changes are causing a ripple effect across this
whole indust and so other Medicare advantage plans and providers
are canceling plans, pulling out of state, leaving everybody to
scramble for coverage at the last minute. So it's very,
(11:12):
very important that you make an informed decision on choosing
your Medicare plan. If you're already in regular old Medicare,
traditional government Medicare by all means, feel free to stay there,
or feel free to look around. Maybe an advantage plan
(11:32):
is great for you, and maybe it's not so this
time of year. If let's say you have a Medicare
advantage plan and it comes time to open for this
open enrollment period, which is what we're in right now,
they have to send you a booklet listing all the changes.
And I know humanity does this, So they send you
(11:54):
a booklet and they list all the changes in their plan.
Here's what we're offering now, here's what we're offering next year,
and look at it very closely and make sure it's
best for you. If you have any questions, call the
actual plan provider, not a salesperson, And if you need
some help because this is complicated. Stop.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Yeah, because.
Speaker 5 (12:23):
To wear your brain out trying to figure this out.
Because I do it for my household. I did it
for my mom and so. And you've got drug plans
and you've got UH vision plans and dental plans and
all these plans. And so if you need help, we
have a government service at Shelby County called the Aging
Commission of the Mid South. And this is government funded.
(12:47):
It doesn't have a dog in the fight. To the
Aging Commission of the Mid South. They have a team
that's dedicated to helping people with Medicare decisions right now.
So by all means there's free, it's un biased. You know,
they have trained staff. They'll answer all your questions. They
can talk to you about the supplemental plans that you're
(13:07):
eligible for in your prescription plans and your Medicare advantage
plans and low income assistance with Medicare premiums and prescription costs.
So this is the The lady in charge is named
Kim Daughtry. But you can talk to anybody there and
I've talked to them before and they're very helpful. Grab
a pen, write this number down, but you can look
(13:28):
it up on the line too. It's the Aging Commission
of the Men South. It's nine oh one two two
two four one one one. And they know about all
the senior programs so they can help y'all. We work
with them all the time with our tax programs for
the senior citizens. So they are very good with the
Medicare choices and they can help you work your way
(13:54):
through this maze. Yeah, yeah, And so that's a good thing.
So I don't means that if you get confused on Medicare.
All I'm gonna say is, don't let anybody sell you
a Medicare advantage plan unless you really know that it's
the best thing for you. And because they're harder to keep,
(14:15):
they're harder to deal with, and they're harder to move
along forward through in the long run. One of the
things that you need to know is that private insurance
like Medicare Advantage is dependent on having medical providers like
doctors and hospitals actually accept their plans. And because they
have gotten more and more difficult on pre approvals, pre authorizations,
(14:41):
slow payments, a lot of health care providers have canceled
their contracts with Medicare Advantage, which gives you less places
to go. So there's twenty seven health care providers already
canceled contracts with Medicare advantage plans. So this is this
can this is the kind of thing that can devastate
(15:02):
a rural area. We're in the city of Memphis. We
have choices, we have more than one hospital. You know,
We've we've got an abundance of professionals. It's easier for
us to find a medical professional that's got on on
on a good plan. But check it out. Make sure
you're making in a form decision. Remember that these are
(15:25):
private insurance and before you make any changes, make sure
that your doctors and other healthcare providers are in networks
on the plan you're getting. So that's very very important,
and that's why you need to speak to the plan provider.
So this is not so much a scam wallet warning.
This is more of this is very important to you
(15:47):
and your health and your wallet in the long run.
So by all means, make sure you know what you're doing.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
I'm glad you gave that.
Speaker 1 (15:57):
I didn't know that we could get assistance at the
Aging Commission of the Mid South Regina.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
I love that.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
Yes, so they will they will they will talk to
our folks before they start, you know, filing for their plans.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
Mm hmm, okay, good good, I'll keep that number.
Speaker 5 (16:16):
And yeah, just give them a call. And even beyond
picking a Medicare plan and a supplement or a drug plan,
whatever it is you need, beyond all those, working through
all those choices and having a counselor help you with those,
they can also help you with other senior programs available
just about anything, whether it's food assistance whatever. Food security
(16:41):
this time of year is very important, and so the
Aging Commission is available. And believe me, we work with them.
We work with them on all our programs, and they
know about all the other programs that have nothing to
do with your taxes. But yeah, when you when we
send out our senior booklets each year, and so if
you've still got those, the Aging Commission is the partner
(17:03):
in that, and uh there information is in there because
they've got pages and pages of programs that help senior citizens.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
Oh great, great, I love that. That's that's good news, Regina.
I will you know, because you know, we have people
who call all the time who ask about this and that,
and especially our seniors. So I'm glad, I will keep
this number for the Aging Commission.
Speaker 5 (17:27):
Mm hmmm, mm hmmm. And they've got a whole staff
and it's free and you can trust them and they're
all trained. Stuff.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
Good all me, good goods.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
You know, I want the good news.
Speaker 5 (17:44):
More good news.
Speaker 2 (17:46):
Yes, all right.
Speaker 5 (17:47):
So there was a company out there called Citizens Disability LLLC,
and uh, they are now going to have to pay
a one million dollars penalty to resolve Federal Trade Commission
allegations they made tons of millions of illegal calls to consumers,
including to the numbers on the do not call lists,
(18:11):
and they misrepresented that they were calling customers in response
to their inquiry. The customers inquiries about eligibility for Social
Security disability. So that was a lie. And so the
complaint from the Federal Trade Commission said the company contracted
(18:35):
with folks to get lists of consumers for their telemarketers
to call, and the lists were created via websites that
deceptively induced consumers into providing their info through sweepstakes, coupon
service offers, et cetera, which was all there just to
gather up your name and phone numbers so they could
(18:55):
call you and try to tell you something that wasn't real,
so they failed to disclose on those the offers that
the consumer's personal contact information would be used for telemarketing.
And so not only do they have to pay a
one million dollar penty Citizens Disability LLCUH to resolve the
(19:17):
allegations on the illegal calls, they have to pay a
two million dollars civil penalty, and they are prohibited from
using pre recorded robo calls, telemarketing to numbers on the
do not call list, and making misrepresentations. So love it
when they crack down on people who are giving us
a hard time.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
Exactly, exactly, exactly, absolutely.
Speaker 5 (19:41):
So that's the little, the little tidbit of good news today.
So I know that y'all are all out there furiously
waiting for your turkeys to thall.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 5 (19:56):
Right right, three days away. Is that turkey gonna or not?
So yeah, just hang in there, and I have a
great Thanksgiving and a great Thanksgiving weekend. And I think
it's going to cool off around here for a few days.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
Yeah, it's gonna be get that cold weather. But I
like the cold weather, Regina, and.
Speaker 5 (20:16):
I like it better than the hot weather.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
That's right, that's right.
Speaker 5 (20:18):
So it's not too cold, just a little nip in
the air.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
It's good.
Speaker 5 (20:23):
Well.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
I love the good news you shared, and I thank
you for giving us that number. I will share the
Asian Commission number the Mid South. I'll keep it for
our seniors and so they can get assistance with all
they need.
Speaker 5 (20:36):

tax freeze programs for seniors, disabled and disabled vets, so
all of that information has gone out. If you haven't
any questions, call our regular number. Our office number is
(20:57):

have a happy Thanksgiving. And get that turkey thowt. I'm
gonna poke it again, all right, Regina, look forward to

me give you all that number. I'll save it for

Speaker 2 (22:14):
What is that?
Speaker 1 (22:15):
I'll tell you next right here on w d i.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
A Don't Go Away. The Bev Johnson Show returns after
these messages
