Speaker 2 (05:50):
How was your weekend?
Speaker 5 (05:51):
It was rain it was rainy.
Speaker 6 (05:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Yeah, Well we are back once again for this month
May while in war and also tell my listeners that
Regina bought a guest in. I'm going to let her
introduce the guests for us, but a special guest and
he's no stranger to the BEB Johnson Show.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
So you brought a guest today out I did?
Speaker 7 (06:13):
I did.
Speaker 5 (06:14):
I brought my friend and co worker, Joseph Lee. Joseph
has been with our office since twenty nineteen and yes, absolutely,
and is our director of Remittance, so he kind of
takes in all your payments every year when you pay
your taxes. It's all those nice ladies down there that
(06:35):
work in remittant's work for Joseph and so happy to
have Joseph here. He's starting to do rounds with me
this month.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Good, good, good.
Speaker 5 (06:43):
We're going to be visiting everybody. But you may remember Joseph.
Joseph was the head of finance at the City of
Memphis at one time, was the city treasurer, and was
also the head of MLG and W at the right time.
He had a lot of hats. He had a lot
of hats, and similar to me over this city had
a lot of hats. And so now he works for
the county. So we're happy to bring Joseph in this
(07:04):
morning and talk to him, and if y'all have any
questions about how your payments get handled, he'll hear to
answer those.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
Well, let me say, good morning, Joseph. Good to see
you again, brother.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
How are you.
Speaker 5 (07:15):
I'm doing great, Bail, good morning.
Speaker 8 (07:17):
Thank you for this opportunity, Regina, thank you for allowing
me to tag team with you and Bail. I told
my wife mode I said, one thing I got to
say while I'm here is I'm in the presence of
the Hall of Famer.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
So the Queen of Radio.
Speaker 8 (07:33):
It's been a while since I've been up here, yes
twenty nineteen, but I want to tell you it's a
pleasure to be here today. And to bring some valuable
information to all of your listeners.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
It sounds good. And Joseph Man, you are not. You
haven't aged thank you. I received that. Thank you. Good
to have you well.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
Before we talk with Joseph, Regina once again, you have
that wallet warning. I love when you come because I
tell our listeners. Gina tells us about these scams.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
And we had another one.
Speaker 5 (08:03):
We got another one. They never stopped. These people are creative.
They never stopped. So this is about credit card imposters. Wow,
this one's gonna hit you by telephone. Okay, okay. These
scammers are going to call you because they want to
make it sound urgent, so they're gonna call you. And
it has not yet. We haven't had complaints in Memphis yet,
(08:25):
but it's trending nationwide. So we like to bring it
to you before they get you. So scammers are pretending
to be from credit card companies and they call and
they say, Hi, I'm from your visa or a mess
card fraud departments. Okay, and so this is a very
slick new twist on an old scam. And they already
(08:45):
have your card number, they have your name, they have
your address. Y'all know, that so many data breaches have
occurred with everybody you deal with the particularly online, and
your card numbers are out there, but they're missing. They're
missing that little three digit number on the back of.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Your cah yeah, and you can't do anything without that nope.
Speaker 5 (09:07):
And so these guys are calling and ladies are calling
to get that three digit number. So they make it
sound like they're from your credit card company, like you
had some here, there's this multi hundred dollars charge on here.
Did you make this card? And of course you didn't,
and you say, no, I didn't make that charge. And
(09:28):
so the bottom line is they say they want you
to verify your address and they'll read it to you
because they already have it m hm. And they'll even
give you a badge number, like the employee badge number,
so that you can write it down so they sound legit.
And so they mentioned this suspicious charge, you say no,
They offer to refund you to your address, and they
(09:51):
sometimes even give you your card number which they got
from the dark web, so that they can build trust
with you. And then they say they need to verify
the three digit number on the back of your card.
This they don't have, and if you give it to them,
then they will have it. Then you'll get fake charges
on everything. So that is the key that they need
(10:12):
to make real changes on your account. Now, a real
credit card company is never going to ask you for
that three digit number if you have. If this caller
asks you for that number, it is a scam. If
this caller asks you for that number and you think
that doesn't sound right, hang up. So no real credit
(10:37):
card company that you have is going to call you
and tell you about fraud and then ask you for
that number. It's not gonna happen. They may ask you
if you're you yeah, when you answer the phone, but
they say they need to verify it's you by that
three digit number that's called the CVV number or the
(10:57):
security code. CVV stands for car that verification value on
the back. And they may also encourage you to call
the number on your back of your card. You probably
won't because they just made it sound urgent, right right,
And but they'll hope and you give up that CBV
number before you call. So how do you stop this? Yeah,
(11:20):
you're gonna get the calls. If the scammers have your info,
You're gonna get the calls. So they're gonna make it
sound urgent, and you need to know. Never share that
number with anybody, not that three digit number on the
back of your card that is yours. Don't share it
with anybody. Never share it with anybody who calls you
out of the blue, right, okay, exactly hang up. If
(11:43):
you're not sure, take your little card and call the
number on the back and make sure that everything's okay.
Don't call a number they give you. Call a number
on the back of your card and make sure that
everything's okay. Is your fraud department calling me? No, they're not, okay.
Do I have any suspicious charges? Go online check your account,
(12:05):
see if you have suspicious charges. They can run through
them with you. Watch your bank account and credit card
for strange things. Yeah, always do that. Always always do that.
Unfamiliar charges, things you don't recognize. You can also call
(12:25):
your credit card company or go online to their web
page and set up fraud alerts, like if anybody charges
anything over two hundred dollars, they'll give you a text
or they'll they'll call you, and so anything like that.
Your balance exceeds a certain amount, you want to know
about it, so you can set up these alerts where
(12:47):
you're gonna get notified about anything bad. If you get
a call from these scammers who want your three digit
number on the back of your card, report it to
our partners at the Better Business Bureau. They have a
scam tracker online, or you can call them and talk
to them so that other people get warned, because we
haven't had a report in Memphis yet. But you know
(13:09):
they always come here.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
Oh yeah, they do.
Speaker 5 (13:11):
They always come here. And so that is the warning
for the month, the wallet warning. And so protect yourself. Well,
always say protect yourself. Nobody gets the information unless you
give it to them. Yeah, on that number.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
And I like this one because this is very important
because I know when I charge things on my credit
card and I'm online, they always say, what's set three
little number because they can't do anything without that number?
Speaker 4 (13:38):
Right.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
And I love what you said, Regina. Is that call
your credit card company, call your bank, let them know.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
Did you call me? And I one thing I like
what you also said, Regina.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
Check your credit card bank yep, my nieces, they laugh
at me because I check my bank account every every day, Joe,
I do. I do it every day, yep, because I've
had fraud. I've had some couple.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
It comes.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
So I make sure that my money is there and
nobody's using my credit card or my bank account.
Speaker 5 (14:12):
Something odd, that's I'll tell you about something odd. So
my husband and I took a little road trip I
think it's back in December. And we got back and
there's one hundred and fifty dollars charge penning from Pilot
where we got some gas. And so a call credit
card company, a debit card and I said, we didn't
(14:35):
make this charge, and she said they do that. They
put a hold for one hundred.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
And fifty dollars.
Speaker 5 (14:42):
What it was legit. She said, it's still pending and
it will disappear when the original charge gets credited. I said, well,
that's just so everybody knows if you go to Pilot.
I guess they think we're a big diesel truck or something. Right,
one hundred and fifty dollars pending on your card just because,
but if you don't, it could have been a fraud.
And it showed up and there it is, and I
(15:04):
know it's not mine. Okay, my car doesn't hold that.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
But you did, right, you called to see what is
going on with this?
Speaker 9 (15:10):
But it is.
Speaker 5 (15:12):
It is something to check on all the time. And
y'all just need to know what's going on, what's about
to get to you. And this one's rather important because
they're gonna call you on the phone. You're not gonna
get an email or a text or whatever about this.
You're gonna get called on the phone. And we've already
told you over and over. You get a call or
text or an email, don't click on anything. Right if
(15:34):
it says this is your Discover card and we know this,
this and this, and don't click on it, don't call
the number there, Go get your Discovery card, call the
number on the back. Yeah, just just try to avoid
these people. Do whatever you can, and if you have
any questions, you can call our office and talk to Molly,
(15:54):
yeah at two two two two o six. And so
that's it. Now we do have some good news.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Okay.
Speaker 5 (16:00):
We try to do good news. Yeah, I know it's
getting harder and harder to do consumer good news. Okay, okay,
but the Federal Trade Commission and this started earlier, so
this is why it's still good news.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
Okay.
Speaker 5 (16:14):
Publishers clearing House has agreed to send eighteen and a
half million dollars out in payments to customers who were
harmed by misleading claims made by the company, so the
Federal Trade Commission sued them, and uh, you could be
one of the thousands of people do a refund and
(16:35):
if you're part of the settlement, the checks are on
the way. Don't expect the prize patrol to pull up at.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
Your front door with the loans man I was waiting.
Speaker 5 (16:43):
For the Federal Trade Commission though, says they'll probably be
delivered through the US Postal Service and they already know
who the people who are going to get them, so
you don't have to call anybody. But if you want
to check it out, you can look up the ftclass
and settlement for Publishers clearing House online and they stem
(17:05):
from a lawsuit that alleged that Publishers clearing House targeted
older and lower income people, which these crazy scammers always do,
and said the ftc deceived them into thinking they couldn't
enter the sweepstakes without purchasing a product and that their
chances of winning would be increased by purchasing a product.
(17:27):
So people purchased products thinking that they could get more
money from the sweep stakes or get some money from
the sweet stakes. Publisher's clearing House was also accused of
misleading customer consumers by sending mails with deceptive subject lines
that led them to believe that the email was somehow
an official document or some sort like a tax form.
(17:50):
I think I've gotten those before. And they also said
they added deceptive shipping and handling fees. So FTC Federal
Trade Commission is now sending checks to two hundred and
eighty two thousand people an the amount of eighteen and
a half million dollars who ordered from Publisher's Clearinghouse after
receiving and clicking on one of their emails. So you're
(18:13):
urged to cast your checks, of course, within ninety days
or they go stale. Don't let your checks go scale.
But in addition to the eighteen and a half million
dollar settlement, Publisher's Clearinghouse has agreed to significant changes in
how it operates online, so if nothing else, clean up
past problems. So that includes clearer disclosures about the sweepstakes
(18:35):
and that you don't have to buy anything, and that
what the order terms are in the refund policy. So
that's the wallet warning for the month. Our goal with
wallet warnings is to make sure your money is secure.
We secure the county's money at the trustees office, and
so we want to make sure your money's secure too.
So any questions about that, let us know. And in
the meantime, we'll just keep doing our job.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
And you're doing a good job.
Speaker 5 (19:00):
I love doing our job. I got about a year left, okay,
so Joseph will hopefully still be there.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
Yeah yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
So well, thank you for the good news, Regina, because
interesting you brought that up, because I was wondering whatever
happened to the published clear exactly?
Speaker 5 (19:16):
They kind of faded away, they did and they did
wow yeah, wow, yep.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
Yeah, well, thank you for this walid warning and the
good news. We're gonna take a break, come back. We
gotta talk to Joseph Lee and he can tell us
what we need to do when we pay our taxes, right, Joseph,
thank you. All right, we are talking with our Shelby
County Trustee, Regina Marson Newman.
Speaker 2 (19:41):
Mister Joseph Lee is here, director of Remintance.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
And when we talk, and if it's your turn to talk,
you can nine zero one five three five nine three
four two eight hundred five zero three nine three four
two eight three three five three five nine three four
to will get you in to us.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
You're listening to double d I A the BEV JNS SHO.
Speaker 10 (20:20):
Don't go away The Bev Johnson Show returns after these messages.
Speaker 4 (20:50):
On your mind.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
I'm telling you to just keep.
Speaker 3 (21:02):
Around a paring Jo.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
Good morning and welcome back.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
We are talking with our Shelby County Trustee, Regina Morrison
Newman and Director of Remintance at the Shelby County Trustee's Office,
mister Joseph Lee and Joseph when we talk about taxes,
I always get on Regina, I said, Regina, I don't
pay my taxes.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
I don't sit in I don't So what do people
need to know?
Speaker 8 (21:39):
Well, first of all, I will say that the twenty
twenty four taxes were issued last summer and the final
date to pay those without incurring any interest was February
twenty eighth. Okay, so if anyone's out there listening and
you have not paid your twenty twenty four taxes, they
(22:00):
will be incurrying a one and a half percent interest
per month starting March first. We have many opportunities for
you to pay. You can pay online, you can go
to Shelby County Trustee dot Com and hit the box
to your left. It'll say pay taxes, and you can
search and pull up your property and you can remit
(22:21):
your payment there by credit, debit card or by e check.
You can also remit your payment to our office, either
in your original remittal or you can remit it post
office to the Shelby County Trustees Office post office.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
What is that?
Speaker 8 (22:41):
What is the regime? It escapes me now, but you
can give me a call if you've got any concerns
about that at two two two zero three zero six
that's nine O one two to two zero three zero six,
and we can coordinate you getting your payment to us
(23:01):
as quickly as possible. Of course, we're at one fifty
seven Poplar. If you come down to our offices, you
can sign in, you'll get a copy of your bill,
and you can come up to the second floor to
pay your bill appropriately. The other thing I will mention
is that during the tax season, we actually have branches
across Shelby County.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
You know what, Joseph, I don't think people know that
where everybody thinks that they have to come downtown region.
Speaker 8 (23:28):
Well you don't, Okay, In addition, once you receive your bill,
now if it's paid by mortgage companies, we'll send you
a postcard, but you'll re middle will come by way
of your escrow from your mortgage company. But we have
different locations across the city. So when we start in October,
in addition to the main office at one fifty seven Poplar,
(23:50):
we also have four branches that open up in October,
and they consist of the white Haven Region's branch and
that's the branch at Average, Presley and Shelby Drive. We
also have a Bartlett City Hall, and then we have
the Shelby County Credit Union locations. Two locations. One is
right there at Poplar, right across from East High School,
(24:11):
and the other location is out is out near Sycamore View,
out near Mulling Station. And at those four locations you
can pay with all tenders that includes cash okay. And
then in December we open up four additional locations and
those are mostly at the municipality locations. What I mean
by that is we have a location in Millington, Arlington, Caryerville.
Speaker 5 (24:38):
And what's the one of Germantown.
Speaker 8 (24:41):
Germantown, So we'll be at those locations. Uh, and we'll
we'll stay at all the locations until February twenty eighth.
We have one day set aside per week to visit
those locations and to take customers tax payments in person.
Speaker 1 (24:57):
Now someone's listening, Regina. Okay, they have not paid their tax.
I'm sure they have not paid and so now it
is Regino. It's a penalty, right.
Speaker 5 (25:12):
Well, there's the interest.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
So the interest.
Speaker 5 (25:15):
The interest is eighteen percent a year, one hundred one
and a half percent a month, and so what you
try to do is as get as much as you
can and by the end of the month, so you
don't get that interest on the first of the month.
So if you need to, you can callow our office
and make a payment plan, and that's probably the best
thing to do, especially if you've gone more than a year.
(25:36):
Now you're getting a lawsuit. Now you your house is
being threatened, assault and all that kind of stuff. So
if you've got twenty twenty one, twenty two's twenty three taxes,
you need to take some action and get in a
payment plan to avoid all that. So you can do
a payment you can you're behind, even if you're behind
two years, if you're behind, you've got a notice of tax,
(25:59):
you can come and get a payment plan. So by
all means, if you get in a lawsuit or a
notice of TAXI get in our office do a payment plan.
You have to do a little down payment and whatever.
And we also handle those like if you live in
Bartlett or Memphis, whichever city you're in, so the county's
taxes and the city's taxes, whichever city you're in. And
(26:21):
now if you're just behind so far on your twenty
twenty four taxes, try to get a payment in every month.
And so joseph'spensioned the website. We take payments through pay
at nine oh one dot com. We take payments on
a mobile app on your phone pay at nine oh one,
and you can call our main number which is nine
(26:41):
oh one two two two two hundred, and you can
hit pound on your phone and you can pay with
a card. So but when you pay with the cards
there's a little fee for that. But by all means,
use anything you can and if you need to work
out more than one year, get into a payment plan
with our office and just call the mainline say I
want to payment plan. Yeah, we answered one hundred and
(27:04):
sixty thousand calls a year and we answer them within
thirty seconds. So you aren't going to get better service
from anybody in county government. It's a fact.
Speaker 2 (27:14):
And you aren't gonna get.
Speaker 5 (27:15):
Better service for most of the other companies you deal
with it are private, certainly not the private ones, I
don't get better service. So by all means, give us
a call and set that up.
Speaker 8 (27:24):
And I would like to give that address too for
any listener who would like to mail in their payment,
please they can sent it to Shelby County Trustee PO
Box eleven ninety two, Memphis, Tennessee three eight one oh
one DASH eleven ninety two, and we receive incoming mail
on a daily basis and we process those payments each
day that we receive those.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
What about because I think the last time you were here, Regina,
you left and then after you've gone, I had got
an email from one of our listeners and they wanted
to know they were concerned about tax freeze.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
How do they get that? They didn't understand how it works,
Regena And.
Speaker 5 (28:06):
Okay, So each year, the tax bills come out in
the summer and then the tax relief and tax freeze
applications come out before October round October because that's when
tax most people start paying, and you have from October
until the next first week of April, usually April fifth.
(28:28):
Now this year was a little short because we were
closed on the fourth and the fifth was a Saturday,
so your deadline was April third. But to get your
application in every year for tax freeze and tax relief.
Tax freeze is a program where if you made and
we just increased the income limit this past year, so
if you are a senior citizen sixty five and up
(28:49):
making sixty thousand or less, you can apply for tax freeze.
And what it does is if you get your freeze
granted and you keep applying every year and you're qualified
every year, your taxes will not go up while you
own your house. So it doesn't matter if the assessor
raises your appraisal, it doesn't matter if the county Commission
(29:11):
raises taxes, and doesn't matter what kind of bill I
sent you. It'll stay the same as long as you
apply and get accepted every year on tax freeze, and
that income limit's going to get adjusted from time to time,
usually just up, not down. But now tax relief different program.
Speaker 1 (29:32):
And before you say, be clear, because people think tax freeze,
does that mean you don't pay any taxes anymore? Or
is it you're saying that what your your taxes are now,
it will stay there.
Speaker 5 (29:46):
It won't go up on the first year that you
apply and get qualified. It'll stay there. Okay, yep, you
still will pay the same And no, people get confused
about both these persons because they think that later on
they're gonna owe it. No, you're never gonna owe it.
Oh okay, it doesn't ever. The next person who owns
your house will owe it. They'll owe the increased bill.
(30:10):
They're not gonna owe what you you didn't have to pay.
Speaker 2 (30:13):
Okay, but.
Speaker 5 (30:15):
It doesn't matter, you know it just as long as
you're there and as long as you own that house.
And so this is a little issue that we have
sometimes with. Yeah, when seniors start to get ready to
take care of their business and they'll they'll deed their
house over to their children. Right, Well, then the senior's
still living there, but they're now they're off the tax
(30:35):
freeze because nobody sixty five owns the house anymore. So
when the house transfers, you got to start all over.
But no, your your taxes stay the same. So it
would have been really great if you got your applications
in by April fourth third this year for twenty twenty four,
(30:56):
because then your taxes would have been frozen from last
year to next. Because everybody's got a reappraisal this year,
Yes they do, and so, but twenty twenty five applications
be coming out in the fall. Twenty twenty five bills
will be coming out in the summer, and then they'll
all be due like normal next May twenty eight, I'm sorry,
February twenty eighth. And on February twenty eighth, you'll still
(31:19):
have another month or so to get your applications in
for the program for this tax year. The other thing
you need to know about this tax year, well, we'll
talk about tax relief in a minute.
Speaker 1 (31:29):
Okay, okay, okay, because I wanted to be clear on
that because and I'm glad you explained that because a
lot of people get confused.
Speaker 5 (31:37):
Yeah, it's confusing. Now, Joseph was talking about the various
locations we're out. So when you get your bill, there's
a little brochure in there that explains tax freeze and
tax relief and where all the cashiering locations are for
the tax season. So by all means, don't toss that
like I do when you get your utility bill and
there's all this stuff in there. Yeah, yeah, No, hold
(31:59):
on to that little brochure because that will show you
everywhere you can go. You know, we're here on Tuesday,
and here on Wednesday and here on Thursday. Okay, And
all of the addresses and how to apply for tax
freeze and tax relief and the applications are on the
website if you want to go there, print one off,
but they come out a little later because there's a
new application for every year. And so right now we
(32:21):
don't even have tax rate yet to know what the
tax bills are. So well, while the county's working on
that stuff, we'll get our paperwork together and then when
the tax bills come out, that's when you can start
following up on thinking about applying. But just make sure
you don't miss the deadline next day.
Speaker 2 (32:40):
Okay. So that's tax freeze.
Speaker 5 (32:42):
That's tax freeze, and all those same deadlines applied to
tax relief. And what tax relief is it has a
lower income limit. Don't know what it is yet. I
think it's going to be around thirty eight thousand dollars.
We'll get that later. But tax relief is a program
for low income seniors and disabled, so one hundred percent
(33:03):
disabled and or sixty five and up, and the income
limit will be set. And also for one hundred percent
disabled veterans and they don't have an income limit. So
tax relief is a state program that we process for
and the state pays part of your taxes.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
The state pays part.
Speaker 5 (33:24):
The state pays part, usually between two hundred and fifty
for seniors and disabled, usually between one thousand and fifteen
hundred for veterans, okay. And so what we started four
years ago was a program where Shelby County matches the
state payments. So for a lot of people, this paid
(33:45):
their whole bill. So if the state paid two fifty,
the county paid two fifty, it's the state paid fifteen hundred.
On a veterans house, the county paid fifteen hundred, that's
three thousand dollars. That's more than my bill. Yeah, And
so by all means we have managed to get this
program funded for the last four years. I am going
to go on and throw this out there because Mayor
(34:08):
Harris did not put it in his budget for the
coming year. However, I have ten sponsors on the commission
who will add it in. Okay, so you don't even
need to call your commissioners that budget amendment is coming
every year. I'm on here saying call your commissioners, make
sure they put it back in. But I've already got
the resolution and I've got ten sponsors and eleven votes
(34:30):
at least to add this back in. Good to so
that tax relief matching will continue another year, and good
news for the folks in Millington this year. Had a
call from Millington this morning. And Millington has its own taxes,
you know which we bill we built for Millington, and
we handle their tax relief program and they're going to
(34:51):
have their own matching program, so for your Millington taxes
if you're out there. So that's a great thing.
Speaker 2 (34:58):
Sounds good now, So I want to ask you talked
about a payment plan.
Speaker 1 (35:05):
But I think also Joseph and Regina that you all
have the people can pay their taxes in parts.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
So you said the bill comes out in August. Yes,
so I get my bill in August.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
I'll use me and it's not due till February, right,
But if I want to start paying on that bill,
I can do.
Speaker 6 (35:26):
So.
Speaker 5 (35:27):
You can do partial payments. We got that approved through
the state, so you can do partial payments. You can
even set them up through pay at nine oh one
so that they will automatically deducted. Little part. Now, you
can't pay for a whole year, because any payment after
February twenty eighth is late. Okay, So but if you
divide it up for the time you get your bill
till the end of February, and you can set it
(35:47):
up to deduct from your account. You can set it
up to just send us a check every month, whatever
you want to do through your own bank. And so
as long as it's paid by February twenty eight it
takes a little burden off when it's monthly instead of
just a big lump.
Speaker 2 (36:01):
Don't that right?
Speaker 9 (36:02):
It does?
Speaker 4 (36:02):
It does.
Speaker 1 (36:03):
And I was thinking, because some people probably can pay
partial pay this this month and do it like that. Yep,
instead of waiting here comes February, you got to pay
that whole lump.
Speaker 5 (36:14):
Song, correct, that's right.
Speaker 8 (36:16):
And we and we also have what we call quarterly
pay as well, and so for people that qualify for
tax relief. When they're talking to their representatives, they can
discuss quarterly pay with them as well. That's another opera
where they can split that bill up into four payment.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
Yes for seniors, for seniors, so.
Speaker 5 (36:34):
That they can split it up. And because even if
you're on tax relief, yeah, you still have you still
might have a little part that you've got to pay, yeah,
and so you can split that up to four pas.
Speaker 2 (36:45):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (36:46):
So when we say seniors, Regina, sixty five and up
sixty five, okay, season citizens like ourselves. Yes, I know,
and and I don't want to Joseph be late, and
Regina knows my story about that.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
I tell you I was late and I sent my
little taxes in. I'm through. So I get a bill.
Joe says, you owe twenty dollars. I said twenty dollars.
Speaker 1 (37:15):
So so, Joseph, I went downtown and those ladies they
were so nice, and I come in there.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
I'm I'm bitching about twenty fours. They were so crazy.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
I think they went in I don't know they went
and gather Regina somebody, but they were laughing. I said,
I'm gonna pay this little twenty dollars. I paid it, though,
but if you're late, that's what happened.
Speaker 5 (37:35):
Yes, if you ain't, you got interest bad. But I
believe that I've told me at the time that your
staff turned her smiling to a frown, I mean her frown.
Speaker 11 (37:42):
And did.
Speaker 4 (37:45):
I know?
Speaker 2 (37:45):
I went they did. I laughed, And when I left out,
I said, I said, the staff was so nice. They
were so nice, but they were just you. You're talking
about twenty dollars. I said, yeah, twenty dollars. But I
paid it, Joseph, I paid my twenty I'm glad.
Speaker 8 (38:01):
They did it very pleasant.
Speaker 1 (38:05):
The team members were absolutely fabulous and they had a
good time with me. And then they want let's take
some pictures. So I ended up taking a picture. Okay,
they'll make the next newsletter.
Speaker 2 (38:18):
So it was good. It was good.
Speaker 1 (38:20):
I am talking with Regina Newman, Morrison Newman, and Joseph Lee.
Speaker 2 (38:26):
If you all have a question before they get out
of here.
Speaker 1 (38:29):
About your taxes, you need to give them a call
now five three five nine to three four two eight
hundred and five zero three nine three four two eight
three three five three five nine three four two will
get you in to us.
Speaker 2 (38:45):
You're listening to double d i A The Beth Show.
Speaker 10 (38:57):
Got something to say, said with Tennessee Radio Hall of
Famer Bev Johnson on w d i A.
Speaker 3 (39:30):
Kevin, you did, al, I'm telling you everyone coming talking.
Speaker 1 (39:51):
Everyone and welcome back going to our phone lines to
talk with you.
Speaker 2 (39:58):
Thank you for waiting.
Speaker 7 (40:00):
Hi Betty, Hi, Hi everyone.
Speaker 11 (40:04):
I have a question. Hi.
Speaker 6 (40:06):
I have a question about my property tax going up
when it's the deadline day for that.
Speaker 9 (40:12):
And what do you have to do to to if
you have a problem with it going up?
Speaker 5 (40:19):
You know I don't need it to go up.
Speaker 6 (40:21):
Are you talking about you?
Speaker 5 (40:24):
You're talking about your reappraisal. Okay, you need to contact
the assessor's office, and you need to do it soon,
Shelby County Assessor Melvin Burgess. And because right now the
taxes have not gone up, but your city taxes did.
But that was last year and they hadn't said anything
for this year. But most everybody's reappraisal went up. By
(40:44):
by all means, they'll take a look at it. They
got people standing by to answer your calls. Because I
know we've been out with with Assessor Burgess lately in
the community and he says all these things, so I'm
just telling you what he says.
Speaker 4 (40:56):
Ed.
Speaker 5 (40:56):
So, I have a call center standing by to deal
with everybody's assessments, and if you have an issue with it,
they'll take a look at it.
Speaker 6 (41:06):
Okay, gee, wait this minute, do you have the number
telephone number?
Speaker 5 (41:11):
No, as youre don't.
Speaker 1 (41:12):
No, but I'll try to get it before we get out. Okay,
yeah with me, Yes, ma'am. Thank you, Betty, Bye bye, Hi, Beverly.
Speaker 6 (41:23):
Hey, good morning, bab welcome back from your vacation.
Speaker 2 (41:26):
Thank you so much, Thank you, and get out.
Speaker 6 (41:30):
Good morning to your guests.
Speaker 11 (41:33):
Excuse me.
Speaker 6 (41:34):
I got in the car and I heard a little
bit of the information that your guests were given.
Speaker 11 (41:41):
But I have a question.
Speaker 6 (41:44):
I think I heard you say that once when you
first get your tax bill, you can start making payments
on it. Does that just apply for people who qualify
for the tax relief problem or doesn't apply to anybody?
Speaker 5 (42:02):
Morning, ma'am, this Regina. You can make payments every month,
regardless of any whether you're on any programs or not.
As long as your last payments made by the end
of February, you won't owe any interest. So you can
set up your payments through pay at nine oh one
dot com. They will automatically deduct them through your check account,
or you can just send us a check or make
(42:23):
your own payments whenever you want. As long as the
last one's fully paid by the end of February, you
won't have any interest. If you don't end up making
that one by then, then may you have a little,
but you'll have less because you made a payment every month.
Speaker 6 (42:38):
That's up to you. Yeah, is that something new.
Speaker 5 (42:41):
No, ma'am, No, that's all Beverly.
Speaker 2 (42:45):
Okay, I didn't know because I remember my grandmother doing that.
Speaker 6 (42:50):
Okay, we've always been paying it at one song at
the deadline.
Speaker 2 (42:57):
But yeah, you didn't doing it the hard way, right exactly?
Me too, Me too, pain Yes, it does, but yeah
you can when you get it, you can start paying
on it.
Speaker 11 (43:10):
Beverly, And you said you just set it up at
pay it.
Speaker 5 (43:14):
Pay at nine o one dot com and they'll take
take what you say out of your tack account. Or
you can just send payments or send checks or make
your own payments, whatever way you want to do it.
Just try to get it all in by the end
of February.
Speaker 11 (43:28):
Wow, that's good information. Thank you so much.
Speaker 2 (43:31):
Bye bye. And if I had that number for your
caller County assessors.
Speaker 8 (43:37):
Yeah, that number is nine O one two two two
seven zero zero one, and that's the number to the
Shelby County Assessor's office and that caller can inquire about
their assessment.
Speaker 2 (43:50):
All right, Thank you, Joseph, Thank you.
Speaker 9 (43:53):
Hi, Golden Girl, Hey Ben, are you doing to you
and your guest? Well, y'all, thank you tour Miss Regina. First,
concerning emails, have you been receiving any complaints about some
(44:14):
type of payment been made on PayPal and they send
it to you as though you made a payment there,
sending your receipt saying account paid, this is PayPal and
then some type of DOCU sign.
Speaker 5 (44:28):
Oh, I've been getting those emails, not at the office,
but personally that the things that come in that say
Adobe sign or docu sign on my personal email, those
are all scams.
Speaker 9 (44:40):
They're a scam.
Speaker 5 (44:42):
Don't click on any of that's right.
Speaker 9 (44:45):
What about paypals and you paid.
Speaker 1 (44:47):
I have not seen anything that I've gotten that with PayPal,
Golden Girl, that's a scam.
Speaker 2 (44:53):
Don't click on that.
Speaker 5 (44:58):
What happens Just so you know what happens with these scammers.
If somebody clicks on those, it takes them to a
website that's a fake website that looks like the website
for PayPal or Adobe or whatever it is. That they've
made a fake website and anybody can do that. And
when it takes you to the fake website, you're supposed
(45:19):
to log in, Well, what are you giving them? You're
giving them your information, You're giving them your password, and
when you give them your password, then they'll go to
the real one and take your money. So don't click
on any.
Speaker 9 (45:33):
Yeah, open it up to see what it is. That's
that's not a link to the fraud. Like when you're
titled letting your nose from them, that's not the fraud
link though, right, Nope, when you're open your email up, Okay, nope, okay,
thanks for this you've been Now on the taxis part,
I've always been confused about the Texas. Once you pay
(45:55):
your home off, it gets confusing because when you live
in the city, you have city and county taxes. So
you're all just saying taxis, but you're not saying which
one is due to win.
Speaker 5 (46:07):
Well, we're from the county, all right, Now, city of
Memphis is due to the end of August, So you
get your bill the beginning of August, it's due the
end of August. That's gonna make it tough to make
monthly payments. But County of Shelby now we send the
bills out about the same time in the summer, but
(46:27):
ours are not due till the end of February.
Speaker 9 (46:31):
Okay, So my next question is, I don't know which
one I paid, but I send in a check because
I was confused, but I want to get a hit
and they return the check. So do you not hold
the money in like an account in case you missed
or you just go ahead and send it back if
you over now, so if.
Speaker 5 (46:50):
Your taxes are already paid in full, we're gonna send
it back. City will probably do the same thing, and
so you can go on their website though, because City
of Memphis taxes, you can find it there or on
our website, Shelby County Trustee dot com and check your
bills and make sure that you're all paid up, and
you go on the city and do the same. And
(47:11):
because if you've paid us or them and you then
you double paid, that's a whole other matter. Because everybody
gets a little confused. Right after they pay their house off, right,
because most people's mortgage takes care of it for twenty
year years and then all of a sudden, you pay
your house off, and you and then you get a
bill in the mail, and what do I do with this? Well,
you know, you have to pay it yourself, and so
(47:34):
there is the problem.
Speaker 9 (47:35):
Hold it for the next year, right, They won't hold
it like it'll be in like an longer paident.
Speaker 5 (47:40):
They won't. No, most most of them are because you
may may not have paid the other one, and then
you'll need the money to pay the other one. So
if you send us something like taxes are already paid
for this year, and you send us something like in
May or June and say, hold this for my taxes
(48:01):
coming this summer, we can do that. We can only
do that for one year. I don't know if the
city can do that, but we can hold them, and
then when the tax bills get entered on the website,
then we apply all those payments. But just to we're
not gonna assume you meant to do it.
Speaker 8 (48:19):
And yeah, I will say that some customers who have overpaid. Uh,
we're in contact with customers. So if they ask us
to hold it. We can put it in specials grow
and as soon as as the taxes are released, as
Regina indicated, then we can apply those funds to your
new taxes.
Speaker 5 (48:39):
Yeah, that's Beb.
Speaker 11 (48:40):
I'm like you.
Speaker 9 (48:41):
I had I was late, so being late.
Speaker 2 (48:44):
Again, late sister.
Speaker 5 (48:46):
All right girl, all right, Well that.
Speaker 9 (48:48):
That takes care of it. Thank you, guys. We're welcome.
Speaker 2 (48:51):
Bye, Bob w D I a heck caller.
Speaker 5 (48:56):
Hi, beb, how you doing?
Speaker 2 (48:57):
I'm doing well today?
Speaker 11 (48:58):
And yourself, I'm doing wonderful talking to another queen and hello,
how you doing, queen?
Speaker 2 (49:06):
Doing good? Queen, queen? Your question, Queen?
Speaker 11 (49:10):
My question is I was listening to your guests and
they was talking about tax freeze for singing, and I'm
here in Lee County, and so what I did was
I called the courthouse to see why my taxes was high.
So the young lady went back and looked and she
said to me, she said, you're a tax freeze. You
(49:32):
already have it, she said, but let me check a
little bit further. And she found out that they was
charging me an extra four hundred dollars. So she's goin
to take care of that for me, because I'm seventy
six years old and my home is paid for and everything.
So the question is.
Speaker 2 (49:52):
What do I do well? Well, I don't know if, Queen,
I don't know if they can answer because you in
Lee County, You're in Arkansas. You're not in county, right
you know. No, they can't answer for Arkansas. They can
answer for she County, Tennessee.
Speaker 5 (50:09):
This is what we're talking about, ma'am. Is a Tennessee program,
but not every county gets involved in it. So many
years ago, Shelby County got involved in it for Tennessee.
But your program in Arkansas may work totally different.
Speaker 2 (50:22):
Yeah, thank you, Queen, Thank you.
Speaker 8 (50:26):
You well.
Speaker 11 (50:26):
Bye bye bye bye.
Speaker 2 (50:28):
W d I A and high caller.
Speaker 12 (50:31):
Good noon, my most beautiful African Violey.
Speaker 7 (50:33):
How are you doing today, my sister.
Speaker 2 (50:35):
I'm doing well. Brother. Good afternoon to you, my David.
Speaker 11 (50:39):
I appreciate that.
Speaker 12 (50:41):
I think I'm gonna have to put in another call
to Noah.
Speaker 11 (50:43):
We had too much rain. But in any case, right, good.
Speaker 12 (50:49):
Afternoon, Missnowman, Good afternoon, Hi, and good afternoon, mister Lee.
How you doing, Joe.
Speaker 8 (50:56):
David, I'm doing great. Back to Christian Brothers days.
Speaker 12 (50:59):
How Yeah, I'm still paying them.
Speaker 4 (51:04):
Joke.
Speaker 7 (51:05):
So but anyway, good to hear you man sound great.
Thanks for your service as well. Thanks for your services Newman.
I guess it must be God, Miss Newman.
Speaker 12 (51:18):
I'm looking at Inform Delivery and I and I'm looking
at the mail. Regina Marrison Newman, Chelvey Conny trustee pobox
two seven five up, mister Tennessee three eight one zero
one two seven five one. Now the post persons don't
do like I asked them. If it looked like a bill,
don't put it.
Speaker 7 (51:38):
In my box.
Speaker 12 (51:39):
They refuse to do that. So I'm gonna go and
pay you folks, cause y'all done sent me more than
one that you.
Speaker 7 (51:46):
Need to be paid.
Speaker 12 (51:48):
So I'm gonna pay it today because I'm telling you
it's supposed to be delivered today and I knew it
was there. I'm gonna go, lie, but let me ask
you this. I'm not as rich as bell. Can I
put the twenty dollars on the payment place.
Speaker 5 (52:05):
I think I'm gonna pass on that.
Speaker 12 (52:11):
Okay, all right, Well, I appreciate all the good information,
and Golden Girl, you can go buy PayPal. That's what
I would do. I've been a PayPal member for God
almost since they began, so and look to make sure
if you if you if you're not sure about the
email itself. And I'm pretty good from a tech standpoint,
(52:32):
and even sometimes I make a mistake, but fortunately my
computer is not Windows, so I'm good with that. But
in any case, yeah, you can go buy PayPal and
check that out. If they sent you a letter, you
will see it there as well. So thank for all
your service, young lady, young and young man, and y'all.
Speaker 10 (52:51):
Have a great day.
Speaker 5 (52:52):
Thank you, Thank you Davis.
Speaker 1 (52:54):
Before Joseph and Regina gets out of here, let me
get these emails. They have a question that says, I
was listening to the information from miss Newman on the
property tax freeze. When will there be the next time
they will be accepting application for twenty twenty five, twenty
twenty six sharing in the fall in the fall of
(53:16):
this year, okay, fall of this year?
Speaker 2 (53:19):
Next one from Mary?
Speaker 1 (53:21):
When will we know how much our taxes will be
reappraisal went up and so will the taxes? How can
we find out how much our taxes will be raised
before tax bills are made out in August and in October?
Speaker 2 (53:35):
For Mary?
Speaker 5 (53:36):
All right, we don't know that yet. Every spring, the
County Commission does the budget. And just so you know,
just because your reappraisal went up doesn't mean your taxes
are going up, because the state law makes us lower
the tax rate so that the county gets the same amounts.
So the reappraisal was not designed to get more money.
(53:58):
The county gets the same amount because the tax rays lowered. Now,
if your reappraisal went up a little more than your neighbors,
you may have a little bit more on there, but
your tax rate will decrease. Now, it will be up
to the County Commission to set the final tax rate,
and they haven't done that yet. They barely started. They
just got the budget last Wednesday from the mayor, so
(54:20):
they got to do it by the end of June,
and by then you should know. And the same for
the City of Memphis. So you should know by the
end of June what the tax rate is. And you
already have your reappraisal, and so you can do our
job and add them together and see what it comes
out to be. And that's what the tax bill will
be when you get it in the middle of the summer. Okay,
(54:41):
last email AC wants to know.
Speaker 1 (54:43):
Is it true that when you reach sixty five years
old in Tennessee you no longer pay property taxes to
the county.
Speaker 5 (54:50):
That has never been true. I don't know if fly
people think that it has never been true. You can
get on tax relief and in state will pay part
of your tax and the county will match it and
pay part of your taxes. Said, but there's nothing that
says no, you don't pay any after sixty five.
Speaker 1 (55:08):
You know what they say, Regina, taxes and death. That's
gonna be with you always. It's in the state constitution,
taxes and death.
Speaker 2 (55:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (55:18):

The website will still have the twenty twenty four income number,
but the rest of the details are there. So as
soon as the state sets the twenty twenty five number,
then we'll update and everybody will get that. And you'll
get a brochure with your property tax bill that has
