have you with us once on this Tuesday, it's December third,
twenty twenty four. Enjoyed this fabulous day to day. As

(05:12):
Progressive Association and what they're going doing and what's going on.
And I have the pleasure of having in the studio
with me one of my friends that it was a
good friend that we were way back southwest Tennessee Community couch.
Y'all just say that. Mister Ronald Cloxton is here. Also,
(05:33):
the pasta is the pastor. It was my grandmother's church
in the heart of Orange Mound, historic Orange Mound Mount
Mariah Baptist Church on Carnes. Doctor Harvey Jackson, let me
say good morning to you fellas. How y'all doing. That's great?
Speaker 5 (05:51):
Good morning to you.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Good to see you. Good see y'all. Y'all doing all right?
Speaker 6 (05:55):
Fantastic?
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Did you have a good Thanksgiving?
Speaker 6 (05:57):
Oh? The turkey was well? I do it?
Speaker 2 (06:01):
I like what he said, he said it was well done,
well done. Yeah. Well, I'm really excited to find out
about the Union Progressive Association, and I'll start with you,
doctor Jacklyne. What is that all about?
Speaker 6 (06:17):
The Union Progressive Church Association is a composite of churches
that came together really about the year of nineteen fifty two,
really way before my time. And the reason why they
came together was for one purpose, and that is to
support Lamona In College. And one of the things that
they found out. The reason why they did that was
that at that time the college was having a tremendous
(06:40):
effort trying to pay the teachers and so as a result,
a birth of that was in January, they set up
a tea Lamona on Tea. It's down the third Sunday
end January, right before Martin Luther King's birth celebration of
Martin Luther King's Day, and all the funds raised we're
(07:02):
supposed to be given to the college to help pay
the salaries of the instructors because they just did not
have enough money.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Wow. And so from that we have evolved now.
Speaker 6 (07:13):
And we still support that tea by way of our
association and through the churches, but we've asked them to
just utilize it for scholarship money. And so our association,
I will say that over the past twenty years that
we have given to them, We're small in number, but
we have given to them over one hundred thousand dollars
(07:33):
wow in fees. And so this is what this special
program we're trying to bring forth on this year, in
this month for Sunday, it's the second second Sunday, and
it's gonna be a concert with all the funds we raised,
with the ones we have in January, we are going
to want to present to the Lo morno In College
more money for more scholarships to help our own Wow,
(07:57):
I like that.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
I like that because as as we think about it,
doctor Jackson, is that Lemone is our HBCU here in Memphis,
tip the one we got, the only one we have,
and I think because it is the only one we have,
we need to support it. Amen, And you all have
(08:18):
been just doing this and giving money back to Lemon. Yes, absolutely,
and so with the Union Progressive Church Association. Is this
the only kind of fundraiser you all? Do you specifically
target Lemon or do you have other fundraisers that the
(08:40):
organization does?
Speaker 6 (08:42):
We primarily deal with just lamon in college. Now, what
happened is that we have our annual session in July.
All the churches come together. Each churches commit to having funds.
They tried to raise money throughout the year, and in
July they bring the money together. Then in January we
report that money. But since our association is so small
and we have been still giving, but we want to
(09:03):
just make sure we bump it back up again and
try to Times are tough and we really want to
give money back to the college as much as we
possibly can.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Yeah, time, times are tall, Yeah, Yeah, I want to
turn over to my friend mister Ronald Claxon. Now we
go back a lot before we talk about this South. Well,
we go back to Shelby State. Were you there of
that when it was Shelby State? Oh you can't. You
were so you came in, Ronald with the merger of
Shelby State and State Tech. Because I started when it
(09:32):
was Shelby State and then the merger and now Southwest
Tennessee Community College. And y'all mister Claxton Runner, he helped me.
We were overlook that that Guil campus. Yeah. Are you
still working at Southwest Tennessee Community College?
Speaker 5 (09:50):
I retired a couple of years ago after I became
pastor of Morning View, a Baptist church, and I do
adjunct work every semester.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
Wow. Now, now you surprised me became becoming the pastor.
I didn't know that Morning View Baptist Morning to.
Speaker 5 (10:10):
View Baptist Church. I devote all my time to Morning
View Baptist Church. How long have you been there since
twenty twenty two? Right? Yes?
Speaker 2 (10:18):
Wow?
Speaker 5 (10:18):
Wow, senior pastor.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
Senior pastors, I hear you, brother, see no wonder doctor Jack.
When I was over there at Gill That's why he
laying hands over. He made sure I was taking care
of over there on that Guil campus, definitely, and that's something.
So how did you get involved with the Union Progressive
Church associations?
Speaker 5 (10:39):
And that's an easy question, Okay. I thank doctor Jackson
for the wealth of knowledge about the Union Progressive. I've
been with them since twenty twenty two, okay, because of
Morning View's affiliation with the Union Progressive Association, and they
meet four of Tuesdays. So as pastor, I started coming
to the meeting. And the great thing about it, I
(11:00):
became the music person. I played. We didn't have a musician,
so I'm the pastor that plays.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
Oh wow, I know that doctor Jackson. I didn't know
that about him that he can play. Now he can play, yeah,
a little bit, a little bit.
Speaker 5 (11:14):
And after becoming the pastor who plays, the President Leicster
allowed me to form a choir. I don't know if
you know this now, but music makes a tremendous difference
in any celebration. So we organized the Union Progressive Choir.
Who's whoever? We all come and I can brag about
our male chorus because we have a dynamic male course. Wow,
(11:37):
that do not practice. We just get up twenty thirty men,
we just sing what and so I'm primarily over the
music of the Union Progressive and when we have our congress.
I teached the music class during our April congress. So
that's how I became filigated with the Union Progressive. And
this past April we had the hugest music class. We
(11:59):
have about thirty to forty music in our class. So
uh President Lester Helen Lester said, this is what we're
going to do. We're going to have a musical to
benefit them on on with the thirty or forty people
as the primary musicians and choir to lead that musical.
So that's here. We are December eighth, coming up, preparing
(12:20):
for our musical, which is this coming Sunday.
Speaker 2 (12:23):
Okay, we're gonna hold, We're gonna take a break, and
we're gonna talk more about the musical, how people can
come and what they can do. If you've just tuned in,
we are talking with I should say, the Reverend, doctor
Canal Claxton and doctor Harvey Jackson is here of the
Union Progressive Association. We are talking about the association and
(12:48):
what they have coming up a special event. If you
have a question or two for the fellas. We do
invite you to call five three five nine three four
two five three five nine three four two eight hundred
five zero three nine three four two eight three three
(13:09):
five three five nine three four two will get you
in to us. You're listening to double you d I
A the BEV Josshow.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
Don't go away? The BEV Johnson Show returns after these messages.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
I mean, I'm telling everyone.
Speaker 4 (14:30):
Talking everyone, good morning and welcome back.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
We are talking with doctor Harvey Jackson, Doctor Ronald Claxton,
I'll call him doctor Jackson, the past of Mount Moriah,
a Baptist church in Orange Mound, Reverend Ronald Clason, a
Morning View Baptist church. We are talking about the Union
Progressive Church Association. But before we continue to talk about
(15:03):
their special events, Doctor Jackson, we would just go reminiscent
on some history. And I was telling Doctor Jackson that
Mount Moriah, that was my grandmother's church on my mom's side,
my grandmother's church. And I was telling him about Revendoi's Worthy.
And I remember him when I was a little girl there.
My grandmother would take me over there to Mount Murraih
(15:23):
and and I was in the first grade doctor Jackson
and revernd Nord's gave me a little ring. I think
it was a birthstone ring. I read it because it
was immering my birth and I remember that. And when
you said, you said, Revendoid's wait then, and I was,
and y'all, I was talking about going to Mount Mariah.
(15:44):
I remember that choir stand all my it was like
it was, well you were seeing them folcusing y'all did
y'all y'all replaced that? What did you do? Well?
Speaker 6 (15:55):
When I first got there, the elevator was, I mean,
the quat stand was up, and it always would amaze
me with I've been sending in the pullpit to preach
a sermon. I hear the voices and look up and
I never could see who was in the chostand right,
and many of the earliest fires at revand whatever you do,
we need to bring this chos stand down. So over
time we was able to bring the choir stand down,
(16:16):
renovate the old baptisty was beneath.
Speaker 5 (16:19):
The puor pit area.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
We took that up out and put.
Speaker 6 (16:22):
It around there, and then we also did another historical set,
Sir Johnson, and you laugh about it, but uh huh,
when we got ready to take care of some of
the building codes, they really want us to put a
handicapped ramp all the way around the church, and we
really did not want to do that because we started
ascetics of the church. So what we end up doing
(16:43):
they said, well, we'll give you a state to complete
the renovations, but you must make the thing handicap accessible.
And one thing we'd signed off on our church I
proveably was that we'll put elevator in.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (16:55):
Yeah, as a result had within two years we did
put the elevator in and therefore became the first church
in Orange Bound to have an elevator.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
What his history, the first church in Orange Mount having helping.
Speaker 6 (17:11):
Elevator and of course with that and with the Christ
stay and being down it really helped it membership out tremendously.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (17:19):
So I was laughing when running said, uh Clackson, Yeah
that's class and said that he came in because of
Morning View. When I came in, Uh, Mount Murray was
part of the Unions Association. So I just really followed
and carried on the legacy that Reverendr's were that did
and also what Mount Mora was doing so well. Were
here still trying to fight and steal on the wall
(17:41):
to care for the work that's been started.
Speaker 2 (17:43):
Is it hard doctor Jackson and doctor Clacton to get
get churches to be a part of of of of
Union Progressive.
Speaker 6 (17:52):
Yes it is, Yes, it is, I being honest with Yes,
it is. And it's really just because some of them
cannot see the value supporting our own.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
Wow.
Speaker 6 (18:02):
And that's the most important part. We must support our own.
We have others available, yeah, but if we don't take
care on they will soon fall by the way, right
And I think in the country right now we got
like ninety nine maybe one hundred hb cus.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
Yeah, and so number is going down. Yeah, it is
going down. You see, I'm just slowly shrinking down. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (18:22):
So until we can mass our people to really support
and move forward over.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
Time, that be things of the history.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
And you know what, I like this because you all
focus on them and on college whole life. That's it,
no nobody else, but but the more on on And
I like that. And I'm thinking and especially listeners who
are listening and and and they have a church, this
would be a great part of their church and legacy
(18:51):
to become a part of Union progressive and help out
the More on On because we know the more and
On ask needs money and they try to have fundraisers,
they try to do things. But if more and more
churches became a part of your association, says no, we
know our money.
Speaker 6 (19:08):
Is going to the Moon on College period, and we
designated and once it comes in, we make sure every
penny that's raised.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (19:17):
By the way, I just serve part of finance, so
I make sure every penny raised, that's all right. If
it raises the lemon is.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
Going to the Moon on College. Okay, I like that,
And so let me ask this question. Can any denomination
become a part of the association, ma'am? Oh?
Speaker 1 (19:36):
Good, yes, ma'am.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
And we meet.
Speaker 6 (19:38):
We have public called our mid Winter session, and we
just mostly come together seeing have fellowship. Good and then
in July we have an annual session that's our biggest one.
When there used to be we will try to meet
for about three or four days, but over time we
have shrunk it down because we just really want to
keep our focus on raising the funds getting it to
(19:59):
the Moon on College. I like that, and do it
at at the annualt so at least there they can respect,
yes to take place.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
Yes, I like that.
Speaker 5 (20:06):
And we also have the educational component the Congress in April.
Speaker 6 (20:11):
Right, the Congress in April, and that's something we for
the membership that for the churches are there, we open
up a congress and we do this so they can
be exposed as educational things. And again, all the money
raised their strictly goals in that function, and we do
not do that for lamon On College. There's something that
for the keep the Association particle. Yeah, a good, good fellowship.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
I like that. So so so Claxton. This event that
you all are raising your goal to raise money for
lamorn On College, it is happening this month December. It's
happening this Sunday, this Sunday, this Sunday coming up December,
(20:54):
that's right, December eighth, right, this this Sunday. So tell
us about what's happening where it's going to be.
Speaker 5 (21:01):
Well, that's exciting because the musical would be at Mount
Murah East Baptist Church twelve forty eight hangs. Reverend doctor
Melvin Childs Smith is the pastor. Yeah, that's my friend,
that's my pastor. And we're bringing all the churches together
all the talents, all musicians, all lead singers of a choir.
How many churches we have, but we bring them all together, okay.
(21:25):
And the good thing about it, you do not have
to be a part of one of those churches, because
I believe some of Mount Murai East members are actually
coming and we're doing a mass mail course okay, and
we're doing a mass choir. We're looking for ushers, We're
looking for people we're looking for. So you don't have
to just be in the choir. You can just be
a part of any one of those. We can be
(21:45):
a part of Memphis and come to that program at
two o'clock this coming Sunday, Mamurad East Baptist Church. It
begins are two Reverend Doctor Torrey Wilson or Saint John
would be our worship leader, and we just got choirs.
We've been practicing. Matter of fact, the next rehearsal if
you want to sing and you're not a part of
one of these churches, the next rehearsal would be Saturday.
(22:08):
One of the male chorus at Saint John Peniton uh huh,
and the choir, actual choir rehearsal would begin at two fifteen.
We're singing familiar songs and the choirs wearing black. We're
just gonna be festive and just lift up the name
of Jesus. If you want to become an usher, I
guess they need to call Angelina Fox. And if people
(22:29):
want to donate, we need donation. Our goal is to
raise five thousand dollars.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
Oh that's not a lot.
Speaker 5 (22:35):
It's not a lot.
Speaker 2 (22:36):
That's not a lot. Well, you know, I'm gonna put
it out there. I hope you get over five thousand.
Speaker 5 (22:40):
Speak it.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
Hey, though they were speaking, I'm speaking it that you
all because that's not a lot. But I know that soul.
Is there an a mission or you're going to take
an offering and just people bring their money or how
is that gonna happen?
Speaker 5 (23:00):
There's no admissions. Okay, just come and bring an offering.
Don't bring a dollar, bring twenty. That's not in the mission.
We will take up in offering. A lot of the
churches are donating personally.
Speaker 2 (23:13):
Oh good good.
Speaker 5 (23:14):
The Mail course is doing something special. They're gonna offer
a gift. But we just asked him the city of
Memphis to come and support our college. Reverend doctor Christopher Davis,
the president. It was my advisor at Memphis Theological Seminary,
and he's doing an awesome job at lamar On. So
we're asking this the whole city of Memphis. When they
leave church at one o'clock or whatever time they leave,
(23:37):
that's come on over to Ma Murah East. The musical
is just gonna be a strict worship celebration to raise
money for Lamon b Lemon.
Speaker 2 (23:47):
Lamon the Magicians. And and I like that, and and
and doctor Davis, he he is awesome. I was just
thinking Doctor Jackson dot Car he was. He was our
worship speaker for we just had our one hundred and
forty fourth anniversary Mount Pistocot, right, and he and he
(24:08):
was our speaking man. He cut up. See now he
cut up. Brother.
Speaker 6 (24:14):
Now, y'all celebrated, y'all, hundred and forty four. Mount Moriah
celebrated there one hundred and forty fifth. We one year, y'all,
y'all beat us about one year. Yeah, that's why. That's
why we got historical sign. And they said we're number
one in the mountain, y'all number two. I told one
that he's all couple.
Speaker 2 (24:29):
Yeh. See see doctor, when I go to church Sunday
I have to drive around there and look at that science.
I'm going I'm gonna drive around the corner and look
at that sigence. Yeah, but you know, now we have
a sign to Now I know y'all got signed too.
Wow congratulations. But yeah, but again, Dtor Davis, he is
he is doing. I like what he's doing for Lemon. Yes, yeah,
(24:54):
he's putting it out there. I like what he said,
he told he told our I remember saying. He was
saying that, you know what what he likes to see
for Lamon And you know, he says, how you can
go ride down Central and over there about the universe
of mythy you see all those tigers. He said, Well,
I want to have that for Lamon. In that area
(25:16):
you can see magicians and you I love it. I
love his visions. Yeah, he has a vision and this
is what I love what you all are doing. Raising
money strictly for the Lemon LC loc Now, Fellas, if
someone cannot make it on Sunday, how can they give
(25:39):
a donation? Said, well, you know I might not be
able to come, but I want to give something for
lamar On On College.
Speaker 5 (25:47):
Well, one thing they can do they can cash up
me Okay, brother, that's the thing that's right. I would
take it a dollar sign ro In Claxton, dollar sign
Ron Claxton, and I will make sure that every penny
oh good goes to that musical.
Speaker 2 (26:05):
Okay, you you pastors, y'all got that cash at He's
got it. I'm still working on it, you know what,
doctor Jackson, me too. I'm still trying to work on
that too. It's a little hard for me.
Speaker 5 (26:18):
Well, all you need is a couple of college students
around you, and you want.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
Because you know what they tell you everything. Because I
tell the story that at Southwest, my students when I
was trying to do self, as they said, now, miss Johnson,
you doing like this, you do it like they showing
you how to do something. How to do it, Doctor Jackson.
Those students will show you how to do something.
Speaker 5 (26:38):
Yeah, the young people at the church, I mean, they
will show you how to do everything.
Speaker 2 (26:42):
I like what you all are doing. We are about
helping money. This Sunday. This Sunday is Sunday two o'clock.
That's the early time, so people can get out of
there right after. You're not gonna be there all day long,
not gonna be there all day and then they can
still make the see the football game.
Speaker 5 (26:59):
Yeah, that's right, because the Steelers are playing, but we're
going to keep them in form during the program. You
know that Pittsburgh's winning.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
No, this is the Pittsburgh still a fan.
Speaker 5 (27:15):
My wife is a Pittsburgh still a fan. And because
she's one, I'm one.
Speaker 2 (27:19):
Okay, okay, well I'm watching y'all, but I'm cow boy,
no sir, no sir. Now see you the messed up
up here like that. You mentioned the cow boy, but
but I know bo but you know I am a
Detroit line.
Speaker 3 (27:34):
Okay.
Speaker 5 (27:34):
Oh yeah, they're doing it.
Speaker 2 (27:36):
Oh yeah, we're doing it. We're doing it. We did
it last year.
Speaker 4 (27:39):
We almost.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
Anyway, when we come back, we're gonna finish up. And
last words from our guests this day as we talk
about the Union Progressive Church Association. They're fun rasor y'all
this Sunday for Lomoning on College and if you do
have a question for the before they get out nine
zero one five three, five nine three four two eight

Speaker 2 (29:04):
Working hard to bring you out. They never saying and
(29:30):
welcome back. We are talking about the Union Progressive Church Association.
My guest is the Reverend doctor Harvey Jackson is here,
Reverend doctor Ronald Claxton is here. They're getting ready for
their big fundraiser on Sunday, raising funds for the lemon
On College. And doctor Jackson as you say that, this
(29:53):
is all you all do and you're trying to get
that money to help our HBCU. Amen.
Speaker 6 (30:00):
And Reverend Delaney, John Delaney from Saint John Pennington is
our moderator and he's and I'll be honest with you,
I'm the oldest one from our original start off coming
into this Union Progress Association. All those pastors that were
there that I knew they now have retired and call
(30:23):
home the glory. So I'm really the oldest pastor that's
still left among the group of the Union Forgress Association.
But we are really committed to trying to continue care
the legacy on and I won't thank him has been
our moderator, a new pastor come in and how they're
working very hard to try to keep this thing alive.
And it's important that we continue to do what we
(30:46):
know to carry out history is important.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
Yes, it is the part that we can serve.
Speaker 6 (30:50):
Let us continue to do our best. So again, I
want to thank you Bell for opening the door for
us to come in here to share with you.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
Welcome on trying to help them on On College out. Yeah, yeah,
and you know what, anything that I can do to
help out Lamaron because uh doctor Jackson doctor. My dad
was a graduate of.
Speaker 5 (31:09):
Lamon and On in college.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
My auntie who I just lost, was a graduate of
Lamon and On in college. And uh so I think
about them, and you know they love lamar and On too.
