Yes, I'm just so honored to be here in Memphis
because I'm looking at all this history around me, of all.

Speaker 11 (03:56):
These legendary musicians that came from amazing, Yeah, what came
from here. It's just like we're just bathing in it.
It's like, wow, it's amazing. It's amazing. And I met
David Porter last night.

Speaker 6 (04:07):
Oh, good for you. That's my uncle David. My uncle
David is an amazing man. Yeah. Yeah, at Anti Jeffrey. You,
how you been doing, brother, I'm fine. I'm the one.
I've been overseas for a long time. Yeah, I'm living
in Nigeria now get out of here.

Speaker 10 (04:24):
Yes, I went back home to morth Africa.

Speaker 6 (04:26):
Wow, but not Africa, Jeffrey.

Speaker 5 (04:29):
When I think about you and all of you all,
you know, when I think about Sharlamar. I just back
because I'm old school, back in the day when I
was in college in the seventies.

Speaker 6 (04:39):
I just see you on Soul Trained Dance.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
I just see you.

Speaker 5 (04:43):
I guess I can stinue to see you doing that,
right right.

Speaker 7 (04:47):
Yeah, that's what that's where it started.

Speaker 9 (04:49):
That was it started.

Speaker 10 (04:50):
And the platform that Don Cornelius created for us, that's amazing.
That was the genesis of this whole thing and this
start up. And then when he partnered up with Dick
Griffy and they started to so Train Record Company, Solar Record.

Speaker 6 (05:02):
Yes, and here we are the sounds of Los Angeles.

Speaker 7 (05:04):
You know that was crazy because I used to watch,
just like the rest of the country. I used to
watch Soul Train every Saturday. I'm from Ohio after Ohio,
so I would watch Soul Train, me and my band
with everybody be in front of the TV on Saturday
at noon, and I would see Jeffrey and Jody dance.
Oh yeah, we'll get it, we'll get We'll get a cease.

(05:29):
But like you know, I used to watch Jeffery Jody yeah, yeah,
you know, dancing down the thing. And then when I
got to l A, when I finally got to La.
We met at this club called Mavericks Flat down the
Crenshaw district, and so, like I was with the show
group that that we had put together. And that was
the first time Jeffrey and Jeffery and I had ever met.

(05:51):
You know, man, we used to we used to open
up our show with Disco Infernal and we did everything
from Disco Infernal to Mandy you know what I'm saying. So,
and then that's when and then when we when, when
the opportunity uh presented himself, jeff called me in and
he called me on a Friday. I went over to

(06:13):
Carolyn's dad's house on Saturday morning, did a little I
sang people Bryson Field of Fire and then a capella
which was like crazy. But then that night I was
on the plane in New Jersey to meet them in
New Jersey and rehearsed the lip singing choreography to take
that to the bank, and then we did a TV

(06:34):
show that that Sunday, Right, that Sunday, Wow, that Monday rather,
I'm sorry.

Speaker 6 (06:40):
Yeah, So, Jeffrey, are you originally from Los Angeles? I'm
originally from Los Angeles.

Speaker 10 (06:45):
I spent three years in Grand Rapids Michigan during high school.

Speaker 6 (06:47):
But I was born and raised in Los I grew
up in ann Arbor, Michigan. Okay, yeah, yeah, but I'm
talking to this sister, Carolyn.

Speaker 5 (06:57):
Your dad, your dad put all this Solar records together.
Talk about that.

Speaker 8 (07:05):
For me, well, the the thing about it is me
growing up as a child in it. It was exciting,
but I didn't know really what we were on.

Speaker 9 (07:15):
The precipice of.

Speaker 8 (07:17):
And of course I met Jeffrey when I was what
maybe nine ten years old.

Speaker 9 (07:22):
It's my favorite Shalam, I mean, and none of the
groups listening.

Speaker 8 (07:25):
Please don't be upset, but you all know that Shalamar
was always my favorite, and it's just, you know, it
was just a great time to be there. My mother,
Carrie Lucas, was also an artist on the label, so
you know, to be able to go on tour and
to be a part of this, it was it was
an exciting time. Did not think that I would be
doing this at this point in time, but you know,

(07:47):
it's been a blessing.

Speaker 7 (07:49):
First make count he was eleven years old, wow, eleven eleven.

Speaker 8 (07:54):
We used a horseback ride all they used to come
out to our house in Chatsworth, California, and the I was,
I've always I've always been a cowgirl. I've always been
an avid horseman. And he would always come out and ride,
and Jeffrey was trying to stay as far away from
the horses as.

Speaker 6 (08:11):
Jeffrey, you like me no horses.

Speaker 5 (08:14):
I got a one horse one time, Carolyn, and then
start by, I said, get me off, get no horses.

Speaker 6 (08:19):
Yeah, my experience, so you know, but.

Speaker 9 (08:21):
Yeah, but it was a great experience.

Speaker 8 (08:23):
And also my father was also the booking agent for
Soul Train at the time when I was a little
up and hang out with Jeffrey and watch them dance,
and it was just it was it was an exciting time.

Speaker 6 (08:34):
It was just.

Speaker 7 (08:34):
Yeah, that's the whole thing, is like it feel good music.

Speaker 6 (08:38):
I was, Yes, it is.

Speaker 7 (08:39):
I was talking to George Daniel out of Chicago this
morning's George will be there tomorrow and and like, you know,
that's what he kept saying when he's talking. He said, Man,
I'm so stoked about coming and seeing the show because
this is that's music that's back in the music with
with Shalomar, lay Side Whispers, you know, carry and and

(09:01):
and just confunction. All all that stuff was like you know.
I mean, it's it's great music that I don't do.
I don't do any Howard songs in the show.

Speaker 6 (09:13):
Strictly.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
You don't have time.

Speaker 9 (09:15):
There's so many.

Speaker 7 (09:16):
Yeah, but but I want to give the honor to
my legacy. This is this is our legacy, you know
what I'm saying. And that's something that you cannot you
can't just just snuff your nose at. This is our legacy.
This is what has enabled us to do everything that
we're doing, you know.

Speaker 5 (09:36):
And producer, oh yeah, yeah, lay down.

Speaker 9 (09:44):
And also Foster Silvers.

Speaker 8 (09:45):
A lot of people don't know that Foster was on
those funky guitar licks and those in the Bait and
some of the basslines too, is a part of the
writing as well.

Speaker 9 (09:53):
So we know that he's not well.

Speaker 8 (09:54):
I want to send our well wishes and ask everybody
to pray for Foster Silvers.

Speaker 7 (09:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (09:59):
Well, when I when when I think about Solar and.

Speaker 5 (10:02):
Your dad, the groups that came out and one of
my favorite, the Whispers.

Speaker 7 (10:07):
Oh yes, and they're still still.

Speaker 8 (10:10):
They're going to be on some We're going to be
on with them too.

Speaker 7 (10:13):
Doing a couple a couple of dates are with.

Speaker 8 (10:15):
The Whispers and Evelyn, Champagne, King Ye, Lakeside, Lakeside, and
the Barcade. So we got some Memphis home right, And
I also wanted to mention I was telling them I
lived in Memphis for eight nineteen years.

Speaker 6 (10:26):
Yes you do.

Speaker 9 (10:27):
Yeah, that's all the same.

Speaker 6 (10:28):
I haven't seen you in.

Speaker 9 (10:29):
So long, so it's great to be back home.

Speaker 8 (10:31):
So I wanted to say hello to everybody out there
here at home. You know what, it's been amazing bringing
them and being here with them. We have to come
back though, so we can do some historical things.

Speaker 7 (10:43):
Yes, we're just rehearsing here because Casey Casey and the band,
they're here, so it's easier for us to come here.
Then everybody come down la.

Speaker 8 (10:53):
So that means when we have more shows, guys, we
will be back. So if we didn't catch you this time,
we will definitely catch you.

Speaker 6 (11:00):
Be bought.

Speaker 5 (11:01):
And when you talk about k C, that's my guy,
my birfriend, my musical director.

Speaker 6 (11:05):
He wrote my theme song. Oh yeah, he wrote he
wrote my theme song.

Speaker 5 (11:12):
Yeah yeah, Casey, I always always mess with him, but
so let me see if I can do this.

Speaker 6 (11:19):
So yeah, so Jeffrey can hear this.

Speaker 5 (11:20):
So this this is Casey always this is him.

Speaker 7 (11:29):
Memphis probably presents the Beth Johnson Show. Yeah, well that's Casey.

Speaker 5 (11:45):
So he wrote my theme song and people love it
and I asked him to do it when when the
show was turning ten years old, my tenth anniversary and
can you.

Speaker 6 (11:57):
Believe it, Jeffrey, I've been doing this show for thirty seven.

Speaker 9 (12:01):
Congratulations, thank you.

Speaker 6 (12:04):
This is and how this is my anniversary month.

Speaker 5 (12:07):
This is my forty eighth year being in radio.

Speaker 3 (12:14):
Thirty years old.

Speaker 6 (12:15):
Well, thank you.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
I'll take it.

Speaker 6 (12:16):
I'll take it. You know, you know, I take I
take it. That's amazing.

Speaker 5 (12:20):
I want to ask you out of the Chalamar Records,
what's your favorite?

Speaker 6 (12:25):
Each one?

Speaker 7 (12:26):
Wow, that's that's for me. That's a that's a really
difficult question because you got like stuff like for the
Lover and You, and then stuff that that that never
that that was never a single like just stopped buy
and and all that. But one of my favorites is
on the Look album. It's called You're the One for Me.

Speaker 9 (12:46):
My mother wrote that.

Speaker 7 (12:48):
Oh wow, great song. If you ever get any chances
to play it or listen to it, it's like no,
she no, she wrote it.

Speaker 9 (12:55):
You can count on me, I'm sorry.

Speaker 7 (12:57):
Yeah, it was like, uh it was I love that song,
but I always remember we started the vocal on that
song and leon we're in the studio, we started a
vocal at three o'clock in the morning. We started that's
when I'm twenty some years old, okay, but three o'clock
in the morning. We worked all night long, and then
we went to the nine or ten am showing of

(13:19):
Star Wars.

Speaker 6 (13:20):
Wow, wow, wow. Carolling your favorite of Shallaman Records?

Speaker 8 (13:25):
Ooh, you know something, what's become my favorite?

Speaker 9 (13:32):
To take that to the bank.

Speaker 8 (13:34):
Yeah, so it gets so little yeah, yeah, so little mcclaim. Yes,
and to me, you know because before for a long time,
we didn't sing it.

Speaker 7 (13:42):
Yeah, that's because I didn't sing it, and.

Speaker 8 (13:44):
That's why we like it better. And now Jeffrey sings it.
So you guys that are going to be able to
see the show, we'll get an opportunity to see us
perform it and him get money thrown at him.

Speaker 6 (13:56):
Right right, Jeffrey your favorite?

Speaker 10 (13:58):
That is such a tough question because there's so many hits,
but I think I might have to go with make
that move.

Speaker 6 (14:05):
Make them yeah, make that move right.

Speaker 7 (14:07):
Now, everybody started singing that that's cool, that's really cool.

Speaker 6 (14:13):
One of my favorites is we could be dancing in this.

Speaker 9 (14:18):
She live that ship.

Speaker 10 (14:25):
That song is a bumper.

Speaker 6 (14:26):
It's storm.

Speaker 7 (14:29):
We started. We started doing it like overseas because the
tour that we did over there the greatest. Yeah, and
man when they when the band would break into dancing
and seats serious, very very serious.

Speaker 6 (14:44):
Good good. So so when you're gonna perform in Memphis.

Speaker 9 (14:48):
You got to ask k C.

Speaker 4 (14:51):
K.

Speaker 9 (14:51):
Yeah, we tried to get him to do something this time.

Speaker 8 (14:54):
You know, since it's Jeffrey being so far, you know,
we don't want to just have him come all the
way over here for a so we want to try
to get as many in as we can. Yeah, well,
I guess we are doing the Soul Train Cruise in
January and the Ultimate Disco Cruise in February. So maybe
there's a possibility we can put some other things together

(15:16):
and see if Memphis wants us, Memphis wants y'all.

Speaker 7 (15:21):
Said something about the Orpheum Theater or Joy.

Speaker 9 (15:23):
Yeah, they met Joy yesterday.

Speaker 5 (15:25):
Yeah, that would be a great place for good thing,
really good. Can I work on that?

Speaker 8 (15:31):
And who would you like to see with us.

Speaker 5 (15:41):
I love those whispers because I'm old school. Yeah, you know,
I started in radio in the seventies, so that's old
school stuff.

Speaker 6 (15:49):
I love the whispers.

Speaker 5 (15:50):
I love the dramatics, you know, you.

Speaker 7 (15:54):
Know, one thing that many things because Whispers are like
our band, brothers, family and and the whole thing. But
the one thing I love is that when because you know,
unfortunately got rest is so Marcus passed away a long
time ago, and then uh nick Man Nicks. That was
the dance for mister nick Man. I got stories about

(16:16):
mister Nick. We were like we were like really close,
but we weren't really close at first, but it took
a situation for us to get close, you know. But
like what I love is that they didn't try and
replace them. They it's just it's just the twins and
and and Lavelle, you know, and they and they and

(16:37):
their band. I love so because it's it's you know,
they didn't try and like, oh he's gone to what
replaced him with somebody else? It's it's like, no, they
Marcus made his mark in the Whispers. It definitely made
his mark in the Whispers, and and they just kept
the legacy going. Yeah, yeah, good they're good. They're really

(16:58):
really good people.

Speaker 9 (17:00):
Day out and they don't go anywhere without their band.

Speaker 6 (17:02):
Yeah, oh yeah, they gonna have their band.

Speaker 7 (17:05):
Yeah that's magic. Magic used to play for me. It's
like crazy.

Speaker 6 (17:09):
Yeah, Jeffrey, you still have those moves. Oh yeah, I
still got the moves. I didn't lose the leg in
the war. No, but yeah, yeah.

Speaker 10 (17:18):
You know, people want to want to see me do
my thing, so I still do my thing. You know,
I'm still blessed to still be able to do my thing.

Speaker 5 (17:26):
Yeah, but it is a blessing to have you all here.

Speaker 6 (17:30):
I just you have warmed my heart. Oh my hengratulations.

Speaker 10 (17:36):
Just just being in Memphis itself. It's just warming us,
and especially for me because for me this is like
a homecoming because I haven't been in America in a while,
and then Charlamarre hadn't done a tour in a while.
So for us to put this together and to kick it.

Speaker 11 (17:50):
Off here in Memphis, such a historical musical place.

Speaker 5 (17:54):
Come on, come on, brother, come on, come on, come on,
come on. I hope Casey you get a chance while
you're here, you all go to the Stax Museum.

Speaker 6 (18:04):
Have you been over there there? Jeff you don't need
to go. Well, I know you don't. I know, y'all,
that's why we need.

Speaker 5 (18:11):
Yeah over there and to the Stax Museum of American
Soul Music.

Speaker 6 (18:16):
See Isaac's Hayes. I was at the watch Stacks in
Los Angeles.

Speaker 10 (18:20):
I was at the concert.

Speaker 6 (18:22):
Yeah, I was there.

Speaker 3 (18:23):
Wow.

Speaker 6 (18:24):
So you have good memories, very good memories, very good.
Lucus Thomas with his uh chick hot pants. Yeah, amazing,
And I and I came out them changed.

Speaker 8 (18:42):
That you guys are talking about stacks. Since we're on
the era, I have to take the opportunity. And I
don't know if she's listening, but Joe Bridges, I just
want to tell you we love you.

Speaker 9 (18:53):
Aunt.

Speaker 8 (18:53):
Joe and Kim Bridges got a chance to see her. Good, beautiful,
beautiful legacy.

Speaker 6 (18:58):
Yeah. Joe was the manager of the Timprie, the Timprez. Yeah.

Speaker 9 (19:05):
Now she is ninety three years young.
