Speaker 1 (00:52):
So, you know, normally, you know, we start the show,
we tell about a couple of big things going oh yeah,
we get into our first big topic. But instead, now
I gotta go right to this dude, Are you okay?
What the hell is going on with your team? What
the hell is going on with the Bears? I mean today,
I've never seen a day like today. Even the Jets
don't have days like that.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
Well, I foreshadowed it by yelling I hate my life.
I was calling out a live mike yesterday.
Speaker 5 (01:14):
You didn't foreshadow this, No, no, because here's the thing is,
now you're trying to sort out what's real what's imagined
in terms of resigning for health reasons.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
Right, whenever it's the I'm I'm resigning to spend more
time with my family, we all raise an eyebrow. I
had some reports out there, so you're trying to again
parse through the noise and and some bold statements. I
saw notes from the attorney that Williams is now retained.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Buddy, but just you though, how are you, buddy?
Speaker 1 (01:48):
I mean, we'll get to give me a human response, buddy,
I know it's difficult, give me a human human.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
Yeah, the human response was I knew the on field
play was a cesspool. And then hearing justin fields this
morning in take one and take two, and we'll see
if he tries to revise his statement again.
Speaker 6 (02:07):
You know that was all right, I hate to say
I told you so.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
And the flame flame wall behind Elmo, I mean, that
was that kind of morning.
Speaker 6 (02:17):
And then it just got weirder.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
Yeah, and then yeah, you send your left tackle to
injured reserve you uh Wave Peterman, Yeah, your second string quarterback.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
You say it lost in the drama.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
So like he said, I want out of here. I'm
done with all you people. And they said, okay, Now.
The best thing to do I always go, you know,
with so many things. I mean, I don't know that
any team has ever had a day like the Bears
had today. And there's a lot of crazy things going on,
and people don't know what to take in, what's real
and what's not.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
I go back to the Princess Bride philosophy of Nigo
Montoya when he says, you have to go back to
the beginning, go back to Fazena. You told me to
go back. We gotta start at the beginning. Okay, start
at the beginning, and we take you through the day
because oh boy, now, first you woke up in the
big story this morning was justin Fields, not happy with
his play obviously, and he had a press conference and
(03:10):
he threw his coaches under the bus and he said,
you know, look, he's not happy with the play.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Calling he's got.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
He's thinking too much and when he's out there and
he's got to get out there to just playing off
of instincts. Right, This was how the day started for
the Bears, and you thought, well, here's a three alarm
interview thing going on with the Bears, because here's Justin
Fields in his post practice interview talking about how upset
he was with his play and that, yeah, I just
got to start doing my thing and really stop listening
(03:37):
to the coaches.
Speaker 4 (03:37):
Well, because it's funny because the other day we had
that start right right, the finger pointing and everything else,
and you'd think calmerheads would prevail forty eight seventy two
hours later, or at least that's in theory.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
So here's Justin Fields from earlier today with the big
money statement that then just got you know, dwarfed.
Speaker 7 (03:59):
As the day went on, I felt like, you know,
I wasn't necessarily playing my game. I felt like I
was kind of robotic and not playing like myself. My
goal this week is just to say effid and just
go out there and play football how I know how
to play football. That includes thinking lesson and just going
out there and playing up for the instincts rather than
just so much so to say info in my head
died in my head and literally just going out there
(04:19):
playing football, because that's when you know I play my
best is I'm just out there playing free, you know,
I being myself.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
I am Justin Fields. N I am a robot. No,
I'm not.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Okay, So basically what he's saying is, yeah, I'm not
going to listen to the coaches anymore. They want me
to do all this stuff. I'm just gonna nod my
head and go out and do whatever I wanted.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
So this becomes a thing.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
And then a few minutes later, Justin Fields calls the
reporters into the Bear's locker room and says, wait a minute,
wait a minute, I want to just clarify what I said.
And he goes on his little da tribe of how
you know, I don't want the media to blow what
I said out of proportion. I don't want you to
just take sound bites and edit them together. Even though
I said everything, even though I said all of those things,
I don't want you to take it all out of context.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
So now he's trying to walk back his his bit.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Okay, all right, now, there there's your Justin fel Okay,
there's your Justin Fields topic. But then things get really weird.
Then things get really really weird because we get reports
that the FBI raided Hallas Hall at some point early
in the morning. Wait, why was that FBI raiding Hallis Hall?
In raid On Hallis Hall sounds like, you know, a
(05:26):
made for TV movie and tonight raid on Hallis.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
Hall Chuck Haston in company. It's like the Towering Inferno.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Yeah, yeah, they were, they're rating, They're raiding Allas Hall.
What was going on?
Speaker 1 (05:37):
So, and then after that report got out, it was
then denied. No, there was no raid on Hallis Hall. Okay,
but wait, why would that report get out there? Nope, nope, nope,
raid on Hallis Hall. So either Hallas Hall was or
was not rated earlier today. After that, defensive coordinator Alan
Williams resigned, saying he wanted to spend more time with
(05:59):
his family and the internet slews try to put two
and two together. Go, Okay, Hallas Hall was raided as
being covered up, and Alan Williams is somehow at the
center of this, and there's all kinds of crazy stuff
going on, as you can imagine.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
Why would he resign? He's been away from the team.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Actually, he didn't call the defense last week iber flues
called the defense and now he's stepping away to spend
time with his family. Okay, now that's kind of weird. Okay,
but this now, so you have justin fields, you have
the FBI, maybe maybe not raiding Hallis Hall, and the
defensive coordinator stepping down. And then my favorite part of
the day is that when I see pnut Tillman trending,
(06:37):
I go, what is going on here? Then it gets
run on rampant speculation that penut Tillman, who is now
an FBI agent, you know, former Charles p Nutt Tillman,
great defensive back to crafted by the Bears in two
thousand and six, retired, went to the FBI. There is
now reports that p Nutt Tillman was the guy who
led the raid on Hallis Hall. Wait a minute, wait,
(07:00):
he led the radios and he called the coaching staff
to tell them, hey, we're coming to rade you. Oh hey,
peanuts on the phone. No, dude, this is not a
good phone call. We're coming to raid you. So it
got to the point where people thought an ex Chicago
Bear who is now an FBI agent, who is legitimately
an FBI agent, He is a legitimate FBI agent, and
I know what his go to move is an FBI agent.
(07:21):
He sneaks up on the bad guy from behind and
he punches out whatever the thief is stolen, and that's
how you get the stolen merchandise back. That's the big
Penut Tilman FBI move.
Speaker 8 (07:29):
It's a good move.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
After this happens, it's then confirmed.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
Wait, no, Peanut Tillman, who is an FBI agent, did
not lead a raid on Hallis Hall. This is where
we stand right now with this story, where there are
reports saying one thing, and then there are reports that
are saying this did not happen. Hallis Hall was not raided.
Pena Tillman was not involved, but he is in the FBI.
(07:53):
Alan Williams did resign. There are many local Chicago bear
beat reporters saying something is up. This is not that
the couple people said. We were told that the Alan
Williams thing is not just spending time with his family,
but we.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Don't know what it is at this point.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
And this is the day that Chicago bears happened, and
and Justin Fields has to be looking around, going, man,
everybody wanted to talk to me earlier today.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
Now they didn't even care what I say. They didn't
care that I threw the coaching staff under the bus. Here.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
This was the day that was for the Chicago Bears,
not even the Jets, Mike Carment, not even the Mets.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
On there.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
Other day would have a day like this where you
have somebody questioning the coaching staff who just so happens
to be your franchise quarterback. And that becomes story too,
because a raid that may or may not have happened
by a defensive back who played for the team, who
may or may not be an FBI agent.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
All of this is going on.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
Ad your defensive coordinator resigns and old they find a
way to call Nathan Peter him into their office and say, oh, hey, Nay, yeah,
crazy day today. Yeah listen, you're done. Yeah, we're letting
you go. Sorry about that, Yeah, go ahead, Yeah, this
was the day for the Chicago Bears.
Speaker 6 (08:51):
Multiple A block stories. If you're programming a show, it's like.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
All right, we can leave that with the A.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
We'll take calls, we'll have a guess, try to make
some sense of it, and then we'll get we'll try
to tie that up and then we'll do it again
next hour that kind of thing and move on to
the next story. Yeah, it's it's interesting. The look the
Field's part is just pretty pretty basic. He's kind of
ticked off at the incoming across Chicago Land.
Speaker 6 (09:20):
For his play.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
And you can say all you want about being robotic
and what they're trying to do, and clearly they're trying
to impress on him he needs to improve as a
pocket passer. That still doesn't excuse the fact that when
you have a clean pocket averaging over four seconds per dropback,
that you're not finding an open receiver and you're still
absorbing multiple sacks and you're not scrambling to buy time
(09:45):
if you do feel the heat. All of those things
come together, But push that aside for a moment. The
Williams thing is interesting. The lawyer that he retained as
of this morning, a man named Andrew Stroth, a guy
that I actually worked with when I was at Northwestern
as he was in law school and I was helping
to administer the financial aid program and help guys get
(10:07):
through all of those.
Speaker 6 (10:08):
Sayss like, that's a familiar name. I remember him.
Speaker 4 (10:11):
He's done a lot of deals for athletes through the
year's high power agency and a couple of things. He
was on the score in Chicago, had a couple of
interesting quotes when you take them at what he had
to say. Quote, there's absolutely no criminal activity, there's no
criminal allegations, and there's been no raid on Hallis Hall.
(10:32):
None of that is true, all right. The criminal activity
is interesting because if you're denying that, well, you're you're
just saying your your client is not guilty of whatever
might be coming down. So you know, take that and
then he as he the interview went on, kind of
made it sound like it was a medical leave of
absence as opposed to, Hey, I've turned in my resignation
(10:56):
so on good terms with the team, then why resign?
Why would you not have a medical leave of absence? Then,
so there's some gray and some more questions and follow
ups there. Yeah, it's the floating dumpster on fire in
Chicago right now. As people tried to rally around this, Yes,
there was there a raid. Was there not a lot
(11:19):
of speculation? You saw some of our friends in the
media nationally, Jordan Schultz, who joins the show, going if
any of what I'm hearing is true with putting no
specifics on it, because right now, there's just a lot
of rumor and trying to connect the dots as to
what this all means other than your defensive coordinator's not
there anymore, you know.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
I like how everything that happened today that that was
first reported happening, then was reported not happening. Right, So
because you had the Hallis Hall raid, Field rips the
Bears coaches p THATU Tilman led the raid, and then
when we find out this to day go on, all right,
it wasn't rated Justin Field says he didn't rip the
Bears coaches and it was not pe Ut Tillman. So
everything that was reported that, no, no, this didn't happen
(12:02):
at the end of the day. I mean, I don't know, buddy,
I don't know what to keep what to keep track
with this?
Speaker 4 (12:06):
Well man, look again, the field's part of It's easy.
He's dissatisfied with the coaches. The coaches may be on
thin ice right now. Eber Flues is the favorite to
be fired. He is absolutely after today surpassed Brandon Staley
as the most likely coach in the betting odds to
be fired. So that we know right that part we
(12:26):
actually can put U and contain a little bit. It
makes for great talking points and we can talk more
about justin fields as it goes on. The rest of
this is just I'm sitting here with a giant question
bark over my head, going, what the hell's going on
in now? No, buddy, buddy, bud wait, who wants Wait?
Wait wait, you're missing them. You're missing the biggest thing.
And this is the.
Speaker 6 (12:44):
Merriman gotten down. They don't have a backup.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
No, America found out today that panut Tilman's an FBI
I mean no, no, come on, The average person did
not know Peanut Tilman was an FBI agent.
Speaker 6 (12:56):
Yeah, no, so not so obviously.
Speaker 4 (12:58):
There were an awful lot of Keanu Reeves references as
the day went on. Peanut the best, just the second
best former football player to become an FBI agent.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
Well he's better than John Johnny Utah never made it
to the NFL. He ripped up his knee in the
rose ball against you know, he had never made it.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
Peanut.
Speaker 6 (13:15):
Yeah, but when you take it all on balance.
Speaker 1 (13:17):
The peanut, the peanut dude. Come on, man, the peanut punch.
They got to be talking about that and the FBI
like all the time. Man, like, hey, watch out for
the peanut punch.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
Man.
Speaker 1 (13:24):
You don't want that. You don't want when they good
cup bad cop people, it's hey, you want the peanut punch.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
No, no, no, I'll tell you what happened. I'll tell
you everything. I'll tell you where all the merchandise is.
I'll die. I don't want the peanut punch.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Dude, Peanut Tillman, FBI agent man. I mean, how much
you want to bet Peanut Tillman's gonna be on the
Dan Patrick Show tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Peanut will be on the bad.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
Very well, yeah, that would make perfect sense. But yeah,
and like with this this story, I mean trying to
figure out, you know, connecting the dots because Williams had
been away from the team and eber Flus had been
serving as the defensive coordinator and that was much was
made of that this past week and ready for you
know availability and media availability this week, and then all
(14:04):
of a sudden, this shoe drops this morning, and then
it's trying to piece together like it's a knives out addition,
and ben Wan Long is getting ready to try to
track this down and figure out what the hell's actually
going down. It's another puzzle like Edward Norton said, another puzzle.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
It's either Peter Tilman or Trooper Watner. I'm trying to
figure out what. But I suspect foul play going on
in hallis Hall.
Speaker 4 (14:30):
But yeah, right now, it is a very curious state
of affairs, Like it's one thing to say, hey, it's
a it's a terrible team. It's on the road to
hell and maybe the battle for Caleb Williams. Now you
add this on layers. By the way, it was also
Ryan Pole's birthday, so happy birthday, Ryan Poles.
Speaker 6 (14:48):
Take that.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
Oh, do you think Peena Tillman would have worn his
Bears gear like a Bears hoodie or he would have worn.
Speaker 4 (14:54):
The old prison ones that the throwbacks where they look
like centaur.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
Buddy, you are streaming towards the number one overall pick
in the draft.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Long year, but you know what good fodder for us.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
We got Jason Cole coming up in about twenty minutes.
You never know what he's going to say. I think
you know that by listening to him in the show
for the last few years. We'll get the latest on
what did or didn't happen at Hallis Hall? What didner
didn't happen with Peenu Tillman? What didner didn't happen with
Justin Fields? Okay, that actually happened, you know, Yeah, what
do you got from us?
Speaker 8 (15:33):
Do you realize this is like Christmas Day for Jason
Cole to night between the Jets.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
He's been waiting all day for this. Yeah, he's been
waiting all day for this.
Speaker 8 (15:41):
He's been waiting for his life for this.
Speaker 4 (15:42):
But again, it goes to all of it of trying
to go through the semantics and what's being not said
by eber flues By Bears press releases by the attorney
hastily hired for Williams early this morning of a whole
lot of non he went coach speak more or less
(16:05):
while while talking on the radio, Flying.
Speaker 1 (16:09):
Your defensive coordinator resigned. There were reports that Hallis Hall
was raided or not rated. Peanut Tillman was part of
the raid, that he wasn't part of the raid. Justin
Fields doesn't like you. Uh yeah, I'm gonna go to
coach speak too. If that's the case. I'm just gonna
know what's the what's the fewest things I can The
biggest thing is get off this day.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
Iber Flues shouldn't have been the guy on the stage,
is it would be my argument like this is one
where someone in top management addresses this one.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
Yeah, but no, but Tom Madge wants to keep their job.
Iberflus is.
Speaker 6 (16:37):
They're all getting he's suspendable.
Speaker 3 (16:39):
Actually about it.
Speaker 6 (16:41):
He got fired there. He just got there.
Speaker 4 (16:43):
And then of course Ryan Poles it was his birthday,
so I guess they he got an exemption for the day.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
Hey, I'm out of the office today because it's my birthday.
So just when I'm.
Speaker 6 (16:53):
At Brookfield Zoo, I'm taking the tour.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
I think, I think you are a pretty easy day.
There's not a lot on the docket, so we're okay,
I think.
Speaker 6 (17:00):
I mean, it's totally on Wednesday.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
Reach out to me. I'll have my phone on. Uh,
just let me know.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
But remember I got the I got the dinner tonight
at five o'clock, so after that, I'm out of pocket.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
I think you should be fine. Yeah, So we'll have
more on that coming up in a few minutes.
Speaker 1 (17:14):
But we did see a big trade today in the
NFL something that we're not. We weren't too surprised to
see the Vikings have a new running back and it
is Cam Akers. We knew Acres is going to be dealt.
His time with the Rams was at an end after
last week when he was not made active for the
Rams game. Kyron Williams has taken over as a lead
(17:34):
running back. It's been to starcross last couple of years
for Cam Akers with the Rams. He left the team
for a few weeks last year and now he came
back and was ostensibly going to the lead running back,
but he's left off the active roster. There's a lot
of back and forth, and Sean McVay says, we're going
to try to trade him, we're moving on, and and
Cam Akers says, I don't know why. I don't know
(17:56):
what's going on. I'm as confused as the rest of you.
And then Sean McVay says, I thought we were pretty
clear with what we were doing going forward. So none
of this is a surprise. Cam Makers goes to the
Vikings have the worst rushing attack in the NFL. Replacing
Dalvin Cook with Alexander Madison has not really gone how
they expect.
Speaker 6 (18:13):
They've also abandoned the run, like we've seen so many
teams do.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
Yeah, they they have four they have four rushing attempts
all season. I mean, it's not you're not gonna win
that way. So yeah, this is a pretty you you're
swapping late round draft picks to get Cam Akers out,
to get him over to Minnesota, and Minnesota you need
to make this move. You're desperate, right, you're zero two,
You're seeing your quarterback, You're throwing the football phenomenally, you're
not running the ball, and it's not enough to win. Yeah,
(18:38):
it's a pretty easy move to make. You're not really
giving up anything to get a guy who is a
really talented running back. But suddenly, if you expect, suddenly
Cam Makers is gonna be terrific and be the big
difference maker. I mean, I think we've seen over the
course of his career. You know he's not just gonna suddenly.
He's not a plug and play guy. But it's something
the Vikings had to do because they're desperate. And I'm
(18:58):
bummed and I'm pissed because I don't want the Vikings
to get better, got the Vikings to keep losing. So
in five weeks. It's boy, we stink. We're one and six.
What do we do well? The Jets keep calling for
Kirk Cousins. Let's at least get a fourth round pick
for maybe a third round pick if they make the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
Hey, let's at least get something for him. Let's move on.
Speaker 1 (19:15):
Maybe we'll tank and get Caleb Williams. Things up, Okay,
let's send Kirk Cousins to the Jets. So I'm rooting
against the Vikings. Some kind of pissed this trade happen.
So that's got I'm kind of two minds on this.
Speaker 4 (19:25):
Mike Garmon, Yeah, I mean we saw the final six
weeks of last season for cam Akers. He was fantastic.
He was in the doghouse, and we had a lot
of unknowns related to that early in the season because
that was the big thing in terms of the Yeah,
he's up on the trade block and here's a bunch
of teams that might be interested. I'm like, I need
the whole backstory. Something's missing here for a guy that
(19:48):
finished the season with one to eighteen and three scores,
one twenty three and one oh four to be the
guy that's the odd man out, Like What am I
missing here? What is going on behind the scenes and
off the field that made him not Sean mcvay's guy.
So if you're going to go and make a deal
(20:08):
for him, yeah, that's why it's a very late pick.
Not only is it a he's a running back, so
we know the market place being what it is, but
you got a lot of injuries, so you would have
thought someone would have come up with more than a
conditional pick swap and whatever for a third day kind
of thing. But here we are, this is the marketplace,
(20:30):
and maybe he fixes the Vikings' fortunes and well, you
never get that quarterback and you have to go get Peterman.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
Suddenly it's gonna be in a month, that's gonna be. Oh,
the can't makeer. What a trade. Vikings are unbeaten with
cam Akers. He's run for four hundred and fifty yards
and six touchdowns in the first four weeks. Oh, what
a great move to get him. They're keeping Kirk Cousins
and the Jets are going to get justin fields.
Speaker 3 (20:54):
We're going right now.
Speaker 8 (20:54):
You guys think it's any coincidence that the Rams trade
him to the Vikings when they're playing the Teck.
Speaker 4 (20:59):
No, no, no, that was the next point I was gonna
make here that that was about as obvious employe as
you can get, Just like kicking a field goal to
acres man, I didn't know what the spread was.
Speaker 6 (21:11):
You're a liar and.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
DJ clearly for the Vikings, their running game has hit
a red light. Hoping to change it to green. Acres
is brought in by the Vikings TJ.
Speaker 4 (21:26):
Farm Living is the life from that a lot of
farmland in the land of ten thousand lakes.
Speaker 8 (21:32):
That was a that was a justin field briminism.
Speaker 1 (21:37):

history Wednesday, September twenty, two thousand and twenty three. Today
(22:04):
is the lowest point for the running back position in
the history of the NFL. Today, the lowest point for
the running back position in the history of the NFL.
Speaker 4 (22:17):
You put it on today, all right, why are you ascribing?
You talk and building, you know, a Hollywood star for
September twenty year.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
And look, tomorrow might be worse than today. What about today?
Is today the.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
Worst day of your life?
Speaker 1 (22:28):
Yeah, tomorrow could be worse.
Speaker 6 (22:32):
Reference a bit underrated right there.
Speaker 1 (22:34):
Today is the worst day. You have the overall belief
in the position that they're never going to get paid again.
They had the big summit this offseason and there's nothing
that's going to come of it because the CBA was
argued and there's no escape. Teams aren't going to pay
running backs a lot of money for more than a
year at a time. It's just not going to happen.
(22:55):
You saw the best running backs were coming up for
contracts fail to get paid. Austin Eckler failed to get paid,
Jonathan Taylor failed to get paid. So Saquon Barkley failed
to get paid. So you know, nobody's getting paid now
when you put on that the future of the running
back position with all the injuries that we have seen
so far, right, whether it's it's Nick Chubb or Saquon
(23:19):
Barkley or Eckler. Look, Jonathan Taylor, who may or may
not be as interest as you're thinking is. But the
guy did have an injury and he's on the pup
list right now. Aaron Jones JK. Dobbins is out for
the year. And then all the other running backs who
have started the year say, hey, I got a ball
out so I can get paid at some point. How
many of them are disappointing half the league? More than
half the league. Josh Jacobs ran for a negative amount
(23:42):
of yards last week. Right, Joe Mixon Akers gets traded.
Najie Harris's gonna lose his job any day to Jalen Warren.
Speaker 3 (23:48):
Right.
Speaker 1 (23:48):
Javonte Williams, Madison Sanders, Isaiah Pacheco, Khalil Herbert, who you
thought was going to lead the backfield in Chicago. Me,
he may wind up losing carries. Right, Jamal Williams is
out for a while.
Speaker 4 (24:00):
Yeah, Johnson's a player in Chicago if you haven't picked
him up already, and.
Speaker 3 (24:04):
You have Gibson, none of these guys.
Speaker 1 (24:06):
This is over half the league where you're talking about
guys that can't run, you know, you know throwing Damian Pierce,
who I think has thirty carries for thirty five yards,
for the Texas a great start he had last year.
Speaker 3 (24:18):
Nobody is producing. Nobody's going to get paid today.
Speaker 1 (24:21):
September twentieth, lowest point in the history of the NFL
for running backs. For the running back it's never been
as low as.
Speaker 3 (24:29):
It is this day.
Speaker 1 (24:29):
It's kind of like when you look at a river
or a lake. For a long time ago, Boy, this
lake it was a big hot spot and people came
to vacation here in the sixties and the seventies and
it was a big play. But then in the eighties
came a little bit of a drought going on in
the two thousands and now and now the water levels
are at the lowest it's ever been, and its tall.
You know, some of the channels you can't take a
boat through anymore because it's too low.
Speaker 3 (24:49):
You can't get a boat by.
Speaker 1 (24:51):
And you're hoping for some kind of weather related event
or a big storm to come in and bring the
lake level back up, but it's just not ever going
to come back up to the level it was. That's
kind of where the running back position is right now.
It's at the lowest level it's ever been in the
history of the sport.
Speaker 4 (25:05):
Yeah, and I think One of the things that also
plays out of it is we got that filing of
a grievance yesterday by the NFL, or was that Monday?
They all blood together since the bear suck. It's just
you know, what what level am I on in the
rings of hell?
Speaker 1 (25:20):
They plund it together for me since college? You know,
you get a couple of days, grace, it's all good
to no.
Speaker 4 (25:25):
So like just the idea that you're you're also questioning
player's integrity and calling that and putting that into illegal document.
That's not whispers behind the scenes, that's not in fighting
and just negotiation. No, that that's actionable stuff saying we
think this guy's you know, full of bull junk over
(25:46):
here to steal from Deonne Sanders as we go. And
you've got a number of legitimate running back injuries. You
mentioned Jonathan Taylor. How much was he hurt? How much
is his ego hurt in terms of not getting on
a field. All of those things you know that put
together make for an even more difficult run. You got
(26:09):
seven more years of your CBA, right. I heard folks
the other day with all the injuries saying, well they
should get on another another call and this is before
the grievance was put up, like to do what what
are you gonna do? Stage a walkout? You tell me
there's not a bunch of guys ready to stand up
and take your jobs. That's been the whole point of
(26:29):
this in terms of you know, being replaceable, And that
doesn't take away from what we see and we Marvel
McCaffrey and all these guys are what they do. But
we've already seen what the industry, what teams will do,
and how they'll pivot from a guy quickly once the
money becomes an issue or the performance and health starts
(26:53):
to take a turn. And so yeah, I think it
to your point. Yeah, I'll give you this date the
lower until tomorrow when the next injury report comes out.
Speaker 2 (27:04):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
Well, well, the Jets turning to Zach Wilson and it
not going well on Sunday, then you had this morning
justin Fields throw the Bears coaches under the bus, saying
it's their fault he's not playing well. Then he said
he didn't mean to throw the Bears coaches under the bus.
Then Hallas Hall was raided, then Hallas Hall was not raided.
The defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigned as DC of the Bears.
(27:32):
Lots of all kinds of speculation on social media, and
then there was report that Peanut Tillman, former Bears defensive
bag Peanut Peanut Punch led the raid on Hallas Hall
that apparently did not exist. With these stories going on,
this may be the greatest day in the life of
our next guest as he comes on the show to
talk about them. He is a longtime NFL insider. He
(27:55):
is a Hall of Very Good voter. You can check
him out on Twitter at Jason Coles sixty that's at
Jason Cole sixty two.
Speaker 3 (28:02):
It is Jason Cole.
Speaker 1 (28:03):
You've been waiting your whole life to talk about this
Jets and this Bears topic on the show with us. Congratulations,
Ja Cole, You've earned it.
Speaker 9 (28:12):
It really is like a perfect storm for me, isn't it.
It really is. It's ever gonna get better for you.
This is a scenario. I don't know what today other
than to say, why would you guys want to bring
me on?
Speaker 4 (28:30):
Because you're our best friend, friend of the show. It's
time for you to give a victory lap.
Speaker 1 (28:36):
You always it's like, oh I did oh you know,
I got a sandwich once in a while, so I
felt bad for you.
Speaker 9 (28:42):
So this is this is great. No, this is good,
this is good. But what is it like to know
that your team's season is over before week three?
Speaker 4 (28:54):
Well, to be honest, I really predicted mine would be over.
I predicted it before one Smith will attest to that
before they even snapped the ball against Green Bay. But
today I just kept refreshing and little chills going through
my body with each mention.
Speaker 9 (29:12):
This was so bad for the Bears that Everflows was
probably looking going, yeah, put justin out there some more.
Let's just talk about some coaching issues. Okay, can we
do that? Can we let's talk about Yeah, we'll talk
about the offense and bad coaching issues. We'll do that.
That's that's better than this other stuff. That's how bad
(29:34):
that day is for the Bears.
Speaker 6 (29:35):
Well, and then they cut Peterman.
Speaker 9 (29:39):
That that was a lame attempt to also write that's like,
that's like trying to think, oh, maybe we can get
the news to be about the backup quarterback who beat
out PJ. Walker, who we spent a bunch of money on. Yeah,
maybe they'll get attached to that story and ignore the
fact that our deep the coordinator has quit the mid
(30:02):
rumors of an FBI raid that maybe did happen or
maybe did not, but who knows. But I will say this,
among all the things in that belief, believable of all
of them is the peanut Tellman was actually leading the
raid that I don't believe.
Speaker 1 (30:18):
Would have been it because because you know what his
move is as an FBI agent. He sneaks up behind
the bad guy and he punches out whatever he's got
in his arm that was stolen, and they retake the
property back.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
That's that's what happens to the FBI.
Speaker 6 (30:30):
It's kind of like a play on the Rockford Files,
just different peanut punch.
Speaker 9 (30:34):
Yeah a little bit. Yeah, Yeah, it's not really going much.
That's that's not too much. You need better material than that.
Speaker 1 (30:43):
Come on, man, who put the peanut punch into an
FBI rate? Come on, he could be like it would
be like his signature move. He'd be like the next one.
Speaker 9 (30:49):
The only thing, the only thing is you can say
is that Justin Field is learning the peanut punch for
every time he's going to throw an interception so that
he can try and create a turnover.
Speaker 6 (30:58):
I don't know, no jacoble thin.
Speaker 5 (31:00):
You know.
Speaker 4 (31:00):
I went back like a degenerate I am, and I
watched that game again, like I don't know that I've
ever seen a guy with that much time to throw
who was unwilling to do so. Yeah, that's a pretty
clean pocket for a good chunk of that game and
wide open windows.
Speaker 6 (31:15):
And wouldn't throw the.
Speaker 9 (31:16):
Ball because this is not what he learned to do.
This is not the offense that he knows how to run.
This is again what he did in college. And I mean,
I don't know what offense he went in high school.
Presumably it's one that obviously took advantage of his amazing ability,
(31:37):
because if you had a kid like that high school level,
he would just sit there and go, we'll run anything
that puts the ball in his hand.
Speaker 1 (31:43):
Right, But.
Speaker 9 (31:46):
This is the flaw of the urban Meyer Ohio State Florida.
Go back to Utah system where it's not predicated upon
learning pro style technique where okay, you throw the ball
to here. You know, we lead receivers use in the
(32:06):
open spots it's either okay, we're going to hand the
ball offense like power running game. We're going to do
some bs kind of underneath, throw a little flip pass
or whatever we're gonna call it, or we're throwing deep
because we're so good and so talented that the other
team has to come up and play the run and
we're eventually going to get one on one looks. I mean,
it's really it's a really basic sery. I mean, it's
(32:28):
a high school offense that they run into Ohio State,
but they do it really well because they got so
much talent and they've been doing it for years, and
really Urban Miners offense is an elaborate high school offense
that he took to the college level and then tried
to take to Jacksonville and everybody's like, well, that ain't
going to work here. So to ask a guy to
(32:52):
drop back, deliver the ball on time into you know,
certain windows, and all that other stuff that he has
to do against complicated defenses, against prows at this level,
it's it's hard and it takes a long time, and
he now is showing you he's resistant to it. And
(33:13):
if he's resistant to it and doesn't understand this is
what you have to learn in order to be able
to succeed. Like at least when I watch Anthony Richardson,
you watch a guy who's like, Okay, I get what
I have to do in the passing game and the
things that I have to learn. Like he threw this
one pass that was off target. He completed because the
(33:35):
wide receivers made a really nice play on the move.
But he came over after that play and you could
see him and you know the look on his face like,
I know I have to deliver that ball better to
make a better play, to create a better opportunity for you. Now,
whether he can do it, can do it or not,
you don't know. But at least he acknowledges it and
(33:56):
he knows he has to learn that, and that gives
you home. Been promised that he's going to learn all
this stuff with Justin Fields this week, had told you
he doesn't believe in what he's being told, and that's
a big, huge problem. That means he's probably not going
to work out. And now Everfless and his group are
(34:19):
not going to work out either a because they're not
convincing him, like they're not figuring it out with him
how to do it, and all of a sudden, the
FBI's there's some supposed FBI issue with your defensive coordinator
who's quit after week two. This is not a good
look for young geber Fluss.
Speaker 1 (34:40):
Well, here's how I can solve. I can solve at
least one of the projects. I can't do anything about
Tina Tillman leading a raid on Hallis Hall, and you know,
I can't do anything about it.
Speaker 9 (34:48):
But well, no, what we need to do is find
out if that's really true. Because if it's true, that's awesome.
Like there's but the fact that we didn't see like
pictures of like FBI vehicles in front of Hallis Hall,
because if the FBI does stuff like that, they make
sure that everybody knows that they just did that, right,
(35:10):
Like there are flashing lights, helicopters. They pretty much hire
you know, the Blue Angels to fly over to advertise
the FBI raid. You know, like they do stuff like
that because they want you to know here we are.
The fact that that didn't happen makes me suspect that
(35:30):
the reporter who is standing by his story and said
this actually happened, he got that wrong. Now does that
mean that maybe somebody from the FBI came into the
office and said, we'd like to look at his computer.
Maybe that happened and he got confused.
Speaker 3 (35:45):
Who knows whatever, That's just it.
Speaker 6 (35:47):
How are we termining what constitutes the raid?
Speaker 3 (35:50):
Right right?
Speaker 6 (35:51):
I think they played a lot of semantics games today.
Speaker 9 (35:54):
You're right. But I'll just say this. If it was
a raid, everybody would know about it. You would have helicopters,
you know, news helicopters in Chicago over hallis Hall and
what is it lake Forest? Is that where that that is? Yeah,
like they they'd be all they'd be all over that
and go and showing the pictures of the cars lined
(36:16):
up down that long driveway that leads up to Hellas Hall,
you know it.
Speaker 1 (36:20):
Okay, And Peanuts, someone would be wearing his Bears jersey,
so we know that someone there he is going in Okay.
Speaker 9 (36:26):
With with sunglasses and uh and could you imagine that
because you imagine that Peanut showed up in a bear Seriously,
would that be the greatest thing ever? That'd be like
a scene out of the Blues Brothers, almost.
Speaker 4 (36:38):
Like Jim McMahon when he showed up the White House
to celebrate his Packers super Bowl.
Speaker 9 (36:45):
That's that's fantastic. Okay, now here's where I can solve.
Speaker 1 (36:49):
Here's I can solve. Ready for this, I solve a
problem right here. The Bears stink. There you look, there's
a lot of good quarterbacks.
Speaker 9 (36:55):
The Bears to the Jets play this year. I would
I just I'm hoping for that.
Speaker 3 (36:59):
Here's here's my solution. This helps everybody.
Speaker 1 (37:04):
The big I want a tank, right obviously, because there's
great quarterbacks out there. Hey, okay, you traded away the
number one pick Bryce Young so far we're okay with that,
but we can't do it for Williams or Schadur Sanders,
whoever it is. So the Jets trade Zach Wilson and
a fourth round pick to the Bears, and the Bill.
Speaker 3 (37:23):
Trade to the jetssh.
Speaker 1 (37:25):
Tomorrow Justin who was an upgrade over Zach Wilson actually,
and then he's better and the Bears can tank.
Speaker 3 (37:33):
Voila. Everybody wins a lot of fresh.
Speaker 9 (37:36):
That is the classic, and this has been done before
many times. That is the classic. I'll trade you my
bust for your bust because everybody goes, oh, they were
able to trade that guy. That's so awesome. Never mind
the fact that they trade him for a guy who
can't play, like the Dolphins did that one year Jimmy.
(37:57):
Jimmy drafted John Avery instead of bringing me mad. That
was in one of the classic moves of all time
for Jimmy. But Jimmy traded drafted John Avery at nineteen overall,
Moss went with twenty one or he traded out. That
was it. He traded out in nineteen and moved back
and then took John Avery. John Avery ended up playing,
(38:19):
you know, too many video games by his own admission,
played too many video games and didn't learn the playbook,
and they traded him to Denver for a wide receiver
named Nash. I think it was a first round pick
if I'm remembering correctly, but it was.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
Yes, Steve Nash got taken. Yes, and the Lakers traded
all those.
Speaker 9 (38:38):
Shut up, shut up, Yeah, but yeah, but they traded. Yeah,
they traded their first round bus for a first round bus.
Which was the trick of the perception. The perception is, oh,
I got something for this guy who can't play. Now
you just got somebody else's guy who can't play. And
so when you cut the guy that you picked up
(38:58):
in the trade, nobody ever, only remembers that guy that
way you saw saw the problem. So yes, it's a
perfect idea of Wilson for for for fields. And you're
saying that to just throw in a fourth round pick
just to make it look good, is that, Well.
Speaker 3 (39:12):
Yeah, we'll throw it. You will throwing a fourth round
pick and just because listen.
Speaker 9 (39:16):
A generous idea. Yeah, that's fantastic. And right now, Harmon's
sitting there like, yeah, I'll take that anything, Just give
me anything, give me any kind of.
Speaker 6 (39:25):
You know me, fire them all.
Speaker 3 (39:27):
I want to drink my Caleb Williams Bears jerseys up.
I want to order that right now. I want to
customize out on NFL dot com.
Speaker 9 (39:33):
Right hey, look, ca love Caleb. You're like going to go,
You're gonna go buy Hamburgers Wendy's all week to support
Caleb Williams. That's what you're going to do.
Speaker 4 (39:43):
It was National Cheeseburger Day that became National Cheeseburger Weeks.
Speaker 9 (39:47):
That's not a bad it's not a bad cheeseburger. A double,
a double cheeseburger, that's not that's okay, that's not bad.
Speaker 1 (39:53):
He's on Twitter at Jason Cole sixty two. That is
at Jason Cole sixty two. J Cole is always his
buddy appreciated. We will talk to you next week and

Speaker 9 (40:04):
Good so funny gores Bear's jet super Bowl, but we

Speaker 6 (40:09):
I'll see you in Hell.
Speaker 1 (40:10):
Greatest twelve minutes of your life you just had right there, buddy, congratulations,
Listen to that laugh.
Speaker 8 (40:16):
How was night one on Hanak for Jenkole?
Speaker 3 (40:18):
He was just.
Speaker 1 (40:19):
Waiting by the phone, going ring, ring ring. They're not
gonna call me, are they? What if I told you guys,
it didn't even ring.
Speaker 8 (40:26):
He just picked the.
Speaker 4 (40:26):
Picktu right up instinctively, his dog's ears perked up, and
he just grabbed the phone before it ever rang.

the wide world of sports. Nothing bigger as the MLB
playoffs get closer and closer than the Mets throwing a
(40:59):
wrecking ball into it for the Marlins.
Speaker 10 (41:00):
Brian, Oh, yeah, we have to lead with that unless
we don't. But yeah, a win for the Mets. And
the game was on FS one, So a shout out
to our friends over there on the television side.
Speaker 8 (41:10):
Yes, when did we start doing minor league scores?
Speaker 1 (41:13):
Well, I feel like big playoff game. That's a big
game that effected Buddy. There's eleven teams in the National
League still alive for the playoffs.
Speaker 6 (41:20):
Here's the thing. The Mets aren't one of them.
Speaker 3 (41:22):
No, they're not, but they played a team that was
one of them.
Speaker 10 (41:24):
So Jason and I signed this Pac Frostburg. If I
don't mention the Mets score at the bottom of the hour,
he will not go to me at the bottom of
the hour. So the only way that I get on
the show is I mentioned the Mets score. Does that
sound like a fair deal to you, not to America?
Speaker 6 (41:39):
Well, it is really kind of a cool couple of days.
Speaker 4 (41:41):
I mean, yesterday we could have used you because we
actually had a reason to talk about the Padres.
Speaker 10 (41:47):
There's a reason I didn't show up because I knew that,
you know, you guys are probably gonna poke some fun out.
Speaker 6 (41:52):
No, there was actually some value, some positivity. That's a
rare thing.
Speaker 4 (41:57):
We would add smiles and congratulations and all about Blake
Snow and you weren't here, and then today you lead
with the Mets.
Speaker 6 (42:05):
I did not lead with the Mets. Jason threw that
at me.
Speaker 1 (42:08):
You haven't gotten a score from Bryant. Oh my goodness,
with anything.
Speaker 10 (42:12):
Oh my goodness. All right, Yes, let's get to some
of those games. There is one that is still happening
right now, and it is the Detroit Tigers and they
are stiffing Frostburg's Dodgers. Yeah, stiffing two to nothing, one
hit through five innings. Now the Dodgers are batting in
the bottom of the fifth, make that the bottom of
the sixth. So still just not a whole lot of
(42:33):
offense here for the Dodgers as far as.
Speaker 1 (42:36):
Final Holsen is pitching a one hit shutout somebody now
through five and a half.
Speaker 10 (42:41):
Yeah, it's unbelievable. No wonder Frostburg has been so quiet tonight.
And it's a Dodger fan. The Phillies with a six
to five win against the Braves that is intended things.
Nick Castianos with two home bronze twins over the Reds
five to three. Horiy Polanco had the two run single
down the stretch to make a big difference in that one.
Speaker 6 (43:00):
Mike Harmon's White Sox.
Speaker 10 (43:01):
They took an LD to the forehead thirteen to three
against the Nationals.
Speaker 4 (43:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (43:07):
You like that, Yeah, in the shape of an L. Yeah,
an L to the four head. You like that reference there, Jason.
Speaker 8 (43:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (43:15):
I might know a thing or two about pop culture,
not as much as you two guys, but I'll try.
I tempt the Maritors with a six to three beat
down of the Athletics. We also saw the Astros hang
on two to one against the Orioles. Did we mention
the Mets score yeh scrolling down, scrolling down, eight to three.
They won against the Marlins in Miami, believe it or not.
(43:35):
And now the Mets are just ten games below five hundred.
Is there a chance? You never know? Maybe there is.
As far as the postseason is concerned. The Yankees with
a loss at home six to one against the Blue Jays.
We saw the Cubs fall short at home to the
Pirates thirteen to seven, and the Brewers erected Cardinals eight
to two. Tyron Taylor hit two solo home runs in
(43:58):
the contest, guys were talking about earlier Barris quarterback Justin
Fields werecanting some of those incendiary statements he made earlier
today in essence blaming the organization and the coaching staff
for four poor play. Fields then said, well, actually I
am partially to blame and Chicago defensive coordinator Alan Williams
(44:21):
resigning for what he is calling health reasons, and the
Rams trade running back Cam Akers to the Vikings, which
also involves a twenty twenty six draft pick swap on
the back end. There with that, let's get back to
Mike Harmon and Jason Smith, who is hoping that they
get his Jets a top pick in the upcoming draft
because they might need a quarterback.
Speaker 1 (44:44):
Justin Fields for Zack Wilson in a fourth round pick.
Speaker 3 (44:47):
Do it tomorrow, an a bucket balls, do it tomorrow.
Speaker 8 (44:52):
Hey, Brian, you miss something. Max Bunsei hit his one
thousandth home run of the season.
Speaker 10 (44:56):
One thousandth Hey, Hey the doctor. Hey are the Dodgers
winning yet? Or no, no, I'm sorry that was a
solo home run. It's still two to one Detroit totally.
Speaker 8 (45:05):
You haven't watched the Dodger game all year.
Speaker 6 (45:08):
I've actually been to my first Dodger game this year.
Speaker 10 (45:10):
Nobody cares. It was against the Reds and the Dodgers
one and nobody knows. But let's get it right back
to Jason Smith in my car.
Speaker 6 (45:20):
I mean what am I?
Speaker 1 (45:22):

Speaker 3 (45:44):
