listening to Fox Sports Radio. Greetings, Happy Wednesday, Welcome inside
the Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Carmen.
And also a very important day today. It's not a
Jets day, Okay, it's not a Mets Day. It's always
(00:45):
a jetson Mets Day, the celebration of Elvis and David Mowie.
But celebrating a birthday tech I get by Bob Going.
Celebrating a birthday today, Producer Frostburg Comma, justin forty eight
years old today, just and happy birthday, dude. You're catching
up to me. Man, Happy birthday. You look great. Everything
is wonderful. I'll bring you a giant bottle and glug tomorrow.
(01:13):
Oh that that's nice. That's nice. I'll tell you. Glug
is great. You should have brought it form now. Yeah,
but then he might be too tempted during the course
of the show and it might be the airing of
the grievances. You don't want that. Oh, that's true, that's true.
That's although as it works. Sharing a birthday with Frostburg today. Hey, guys,
(01:34):
I'm on the phone. What'd you say sharing a birthday
with Frostburg today? Elvis Presley? Elvis? Yeah, well, come on,
come on? Do you share a birthday with Elvis? Man?
I mean, that's that's the first thing people are gonna say.
What about David Bowie? David Bowie also a star man? Uh?
Kim John Lunn? You also share a birthday with him?
(01:56):
A lot of similarity, there's there, there's a lot of that.
We both never to use the bathroom. That's short and angry. Uh.
Stephen Hawking also shares a birthday. R. Kelly. There's a
lot of people on this list. I just shouldn't even
say their names. Yeah, I think we just didn't stop
while we were ahead. It's an R. Kelly Knight. That's
it's not it's no, no, no, it's it's not. It's
(02:17):
not in our Kelly Knight. Anybody else you want to
come back. There is rebound there. One of one of
u Brandolina's kids is having a birthday today, shower in
the ten o'clock whoa, I caep say that. I don't
brought up Kelly. I don't think you can say that. Uh.
(02:38):
Freddy Stroma from Pitch Perfect and the first season of Unreal,
one of the best television shows the past ten years.
Freddy Stroman celebrating birthday today. Also Shirley Bassie jazz singer,
sure celebrating, but I mean sure, Trey Jones, Duke, all
the greats, all of you. It's it's it's a great
(02:59):
John Stamos know what starts? Is it John Stamos his birthday?
Just want to say his name? I don't think I
would his hair as a birthday present. It's not John Stamos.
We did get to before our first John Stamos reference
of the year. It's that's John stam was not his
birthday today. But you guys, get Kobe to call in.
What's going on? Yeah we go. We got Kobe calling
(03:19):
in later, and we have Tom. When I say Kobe,
I don't mean Kobe Carl Oh, I meant I got
a guy who met Kobe calling in later, I got
Kobe Jones calling in. Is that okay? That that he
calls in Kobe Jones, Yeah, Ko Jones. I will get
Kobe Jones calling it okay, Kobe that spelled with his
C not the same. This is Kobe Carl is Ko
b y right, That's how Kobe Carl does it, like
(03:41):
Moby Kobe like Moby. I'm not not gonna pretend to know.
And also I have Tom Brady calling in later for
Frostburg to say, Hey, I'm going to the Chargers. So
there's there's that would be interesting that Wouldn't that be
pretty cool if that was your you'd never forget this birthday?
That would be fantastic. Yeah, But don't want to have
to part ways with all my Bolo ties is I
don't know how good that would be yea or twelve
(04:04):
sleepwear though. Just ask Philip Rivers to sign the Bolo ties.
Tell him you're gonna sell him for charity. Wow, he
signed these. I gotta put him up on eBay. Do
we have a story for you Googly move from the
NFL coming up later on this hour about selling something
for charity and that not being the case. But Happy
(04:24):
Birthday just did you have to do anything big today
or this weekend or what do you play? Oh yeah,
I came into work night. Hey, that's all. You know
what's good. We all work on our birthdays. Somebody's got
to put the network on their back. That is right,
We all work on our birthdays. That's kind of how
it goes bad planning on God's part. Let me tell
you on Wednesday. Really yeah, well Wednesday. I think by
the time, I think you kind of hook me up
(04:45):
on a Friday night or Saturday, I know, I know, yeah,
But back then, I think God probably thought we'd be
on like a three day work week by now, we
wouldn't be still in the antiquated five day work week
that nobody else in the globes to frive scoops at
the United States. And I did just order foods. So
I will stick you with the bill. Nice, all right,
very good, the more expensive it is. My last name
is spelled T E I C h E R T
(05:09):
right there. So on the well, I mean we can
just play back some some clips, maybe get a couple
of taped interviews, and take the show off. Okay, honey,
you think MC used the opening? Make it nice and
easy for for Frostburg today. So on Justin Frostburgh's birthday
today and you can wish him happy birthday on Twitter
(05:31):
as well. Just go to Bolo ties r Us at
Twitter and you can can wish happy birthday there. Um
these at bolts Booth on Twitter. Speaking of Tom Brady,
Tom Brady had the story of the day today by
posting on Instagram and hinting about his future. Brady put
(05:53):
a big post showing himself running out onto the field
that you're lette stadium. This a couple of days after
the loss to the Titans and knocked him out, and
this is the message that he put out there. I'm
not going to read the whole thing, but I'm gonna
give you the best of and I'm not gonna leave
anything out that's Germaine to the conversation we're gonna have.
I just wanted to say to all our fans, thank you.
(06:14):
After a few days of reflection, I am so grateful
and humbled by the unconditional support you have shown me
the past two decades. Running out of that tunnel every
week is a feeling that is hard to explain. I
wish every season ended in a win, but that's not
the nature of sports or life. He goes on to
talk about winning and losing for a second. Then he
goes on to say, every one of us that works
(06:34):
at Gillette Stadium strived to do their best, spent themselves
at a worthy cause, and prepared to fail while daring
greatly hashtag Teddy Roosevelt. He goes on to talk about
giving and the team being important, and then he ends
with this, which is the money part of this Instagram post.
(06:55):
In both life and football, failure is inevitable. It's kind
of sounded like al Pacino in life and football. These
inches are everywhere around them. In both life and football,
failure is inevitable. You don't always win. You can, however,
learn that from failure, pick yourself up with great enthusiasm
and place yourself in the arena again. Get a little
(07:18):
Teddy Roosevelt going on there, and that's right where you
will find me, because I know I still have more
to prove. Again at the end, place yourself in the
arena again, and that's right where you will find me,
because I know I still have more to prove. The
focus all day today has been a look at me.
(07:38):
Stop short of saying coming back, it's slept in the air.
He's maybe coming I to people need to be hit
over the head with the fact that Tom Brady is
leaving the Patriots. This is a post in which he
is thanking fans, right, He's thinking all the fans for
their support, what they've done from for twenty years. First
of all, it's a goodbye letter and a goodbye puss.
But let's just let's let's let's put a pin in
(07:59):
that for a second. This is a posting to all
of the fans who have supported him for the past
twenty years. His future is up in the air, right,
we know this. He doesn't know he's coming back, is
he not. You're Tom Brady, You're almost twenty years of
the New England Patriots, right. What do you say to
fans of the Patriots. I hope I'm back in front
of you next year doing this again. No one would
(08:22):
call Tom Brady out if he wound up going someplace else,
because all he's saying is I hope I'm in front
of you again. I hope I'm playing for you again
next year in New England. But Brady can't even bring
himself to say that because he's gone. No one's gonna say, wait,
you wrote on an Instagram post you hope to be back. Yeah,
I hope you're back, and it didn't work out and
I'm gone. He can't even bring himself to say I
(08:43):
hope to be back, I hope to be playing in
front of you, which is what anybody would do. Anybody
would do that. Hey, I hope to come back, doesn't
mean I'm coming back, doesn't mean I'm definitely back. He
doesn't have to say I'm back next year, don't worry,
let's ride, let's roll. He can't even bring himself to
say that, which is the easiest thing to do the situation,
and that would get rid of a lot of tension past.
(09:04):
Is Tom Brady going? At least he said, okay, he
hopes to be back. Everything is up in the air.
He specifically did not talk about coming back. He didn't
mention the Patriots. He said every one of us that
works at Gillette Stadium. He specifically went out of his
way to make this post the way he did. He
is gone. You need every day say you need no
more evidence than this, but this really is it. He
(09:27):
can't even say I hope to be back in front
of you next year. With me. He could be lying
everybody does it. I hope to be back, but you
know what, somebody else offer me more money, so I'm going.
Matt Rule was more truthful with his team, saying, hey, Baylor,
you know I'll talk to the NFL. I'll say I'll
not have to talk to him. Then I'll say I'm
not going. I mean, he was more truthful. Brady can't
even bring himself to say that. What what more evidence
(09:49):
do you need that he is not only checked out
physically mentally, he is gone from there and he still
need more. Uh. First off, Matt Rule, I sent some money.
He sounded like a talent angelist. And we'll get into
some of his comments as the show goes on. UM,
I felt like I needed to add to his coffers
because he got me riled up like guy and had
(10:09):
an awakening. And now that I do you see the light?
I said, yes, I do ask for this. With Tom Brady.
This is for the three percent of people that thought
he was going to retire, right Because wasn't that the
Robert Kraft line of I hope he's playing for us
or he retires. This was the volley back to Robert Kraft. Saying, okay,
(10:29):
balls of your court, I'm not retiring. That's really all
I take from this this statement, right, well, why can't you?
This is what anybody else would say. I hope to
be back playing in front of It's been twenty years.
I hope this. This is an eat. This is what's
called easy promotion. This is this is the easiest. He
still said no, and he still said nope. Not gonna
say I'm coming back because I'm leaving. Well, but it's not.
(10:52):
It may not be his choice to come back. All
he's saying here is I'm not done playing. So now
it's going to be you read between the line. It's
on the Patriots to decide where this goes from here, right,
because if they don't resign him, they've got the dead
cap issue third team. Point five million dollars is not
an insignificant amount of money when you're trying to figure
(11:13):
out your your roster going ahead, because you're gonna have
to bring in another quarterback. As much as they may
extol the virtues of Jared Stidham and guys maybe talking
him up behind the scenes, that there's no guarantee he's
the guy that's ready. Right, We've seen the air Apparents
a few times that have come through, and it's like
Brady's you know, not not killing it, right, I mean,
(11:34):
how many lives as he had, right, I mean how
many times just Rob Parker and many other folks in
our media business trying to but but but there's always
been that guy and then he's gone, yeah, but there
there's an easier way to make the Hey, I hope
I'm back. You're not losing anything, You're not doing anything,
but making this not a story. Because if he says
(11:54):
I hope to be back in front of you next year,
what happens? All this, what is Tom Brady doing? Hits
the backburner for a little while, and Brady can enjoy
his off season, the page can enjoy their off season
because all right, Tom said, he hopes. So maybe they're
gonna work things out. It's the beginning of January. We're
onto the a f C and NFC divisional rounds, were
on onto the championship games of Super Bowl. But no,
all he's got to do is say, and he knows,
(12:15):
Brady's the guy that talked to the media once or
twice in the past eighteen years. All he's gotta do
is say I hope to be back even if he's not.
That's I mean, literally, that is what everybody else in
this situation would say. I hope to be back, but
I don't know what the future is. He couldn't even
say I hope to be back playing in front of you.
All he said was I know I'll be in the
arena again. That's a specific word this. I know. I
know I'll be back in Julette again, and I'll be
(12:36):
back in front of No. This is very craftily written
to let everybody know there is no two ways about it.
I I am gone. I this is I can't if
he could have just said, hey, I hope so all right,
but he couldn't even say no. But to me, this
is the way to say a pay patriots. You know,
I'm putting it on them that if I leave, it's
(12:57):
not gonna be on me without make get at overtly adversarial. Right,
This is hey, thanks, it's been a good run. Everybody
there works hard, whatever, so you could keep it. You
have a statement, right, because there's been so much speculation
all over the place, So this at least takes those
reports of Hey, Tom Brady's old and he can retire.
(13:19):
You know the folks that are shouting that from the
rooftop that didn't watch any Patriots games. I'm not saying
he's the guy he was three years ago, five years ago, whatever,
but he's still better than an awful lot of quarterbacks.
If he had, you know, wide receivers with a pulse
and knew how to run a route, he could finish
off drives. I mean, you had the the that's the
(13:39):
Joe Judge Wide Receiving Corps at your service right there. Well,
you go talk to the giants about that. I'm not there. Guys,
young guys with talent, but it takes time to work
into a system, right and the two veterans that they had,
Gordon gets sent away, and then we all know about
the trials and tribulations of one Antonio Brown and his
music career. That is now further. I just say this,
(14:02):
This pushes it aside for now, saying hey, just buckle,
buckle your chin strap. We gotta a ride to go.
But it's gonna be on. Look, once Bill Belichick's done
voting for whatever All Time team he's working on now,
maybe he'll get back to work. Yeah, but still, but
even if he says, I hope to be back. That
puts the onus on the Patriots, and that puts the
(14:22):
onus on Craft and Belichick, which if Brady wanted to
play it that way, would be a great thing because fans,
the fans of media would say, oh, so Brady wants
to come back? Now? Oh or the are the is
the are the ownership and the coach really gonna push
him out of town? But he still didn't say that,
but it would have helped him. But why well, why
make it antagonistic? Right now? I'll be in the arena again.
(14:46):
I mean that, everybody. Why can't he say supposed to
say raft? Look Twitter at how about a fresco? Mike
gets swollen home. We got more on Tom Brady coming
up next. I'll tell you not only why is he
going to go, but why he has to go to
a new team. Continue this on right here, Brady on

(15:27):
Frostburg tonight, celebrating by wearing all of his Bolo ties
at once. It's a good monk. It's like wearing gold chains,
stacking him up all the way around on the Bolo.
Mr T got a borderline mohawk working too. Would you
get a mohawk for charity? Who on the show tonight
get a mohawk for charity? Only if somebody signs it
(15:50):
all right, and then and I'll sell I'll make sure
to sell it on eBay. Oh yeah, we have a
wild story coming your way in about twenty minutes that
is just gonna make your jaw drop and go, oh
my good this. But more on Tom Brady today, who
put out the Instagram post thanking Patriots fans for all
their support in the time he played there. The big
(16:11):
message that he put through didn't say anything about coming back,
didn't even mention the Patriots, didn't mention the Patriots organization
at all. Tom Brady has never been hotter. Just said
every one of us that works at you Lette Stadium
strive to do their best and ended by saying you
can learn from failure pick yourself up with great enthusiasm
and place yourself in the arena again, and that's right
(16:34):
where you'll find me, because I know I still have
more to prove. Like I said top of the show,
you don't need any more evidence that Tom Brady is leaving,
you know, any more evidence than this. I know I
still have more to prove if he wanted to come
back to the Patriots, if he wanted to come back,
he would have at least somehow in this post said
(16:55):
something to at least quell the fans, Oh, Tommy's leaving,
Tommy's leaving. But he didn't. He could have gone through
many different ways. It was free publicity for him to
just say hope to be back. I don't know what
the future holds, and everybody would back off. And he
knows that, but still he doesn't do it because he
knows he wants everybody to understand I am gonna be
leaving right. This is not hey, We're working together. Everything
(17:19):
between Brady and Craft and Belichick these past few weeks
when it comes to Tom Brady's future, has been very
clinical and by the book, there's been no not that
you have to have warm fuzzies, but there's got to
be some kind of Hey, Patriots is special to me.
I really want to keep here. Bob Craft would be
crying on national television every five minutes saying, oh we
can't not have Tom and said it's helpe he's back
(17:40):
or he retires. Oh gee, that's great, and you know
Belichick is not gonna give you anything. But no, well,
you know Tom's and icon. Oh hey, that's kind of
a big deal. What do you want him back? Johnny
Hecker's an icon for for Bill Belichick, we got a
whole lot of Yeah, we got a whole love of
thing about that in the ram is and what they're doing.
(18:00):
But all of all of that, you can see, none
of this is we're working together to make something happen.
So that that's that that that should be all the
evidence you need. But to take this conversation in different direction,
not only is he gone, he kind of has to
go right at this point in his NFL career. He
knows the Patriots. Look at the scene they put out
(18:23):
on the field this year. All right, what did they do?
They went nuts defensively first eight games of the year
carried the Patriots and then they kind of meandered their
way to a four and five finish down the stretch.
They did not play very well. They did not add
offensive weapons. They did not help Tom Brady like they
had in the past. By let's draft a couple more
running backs. Let's get a couple of wide receivers in here. No,
(18:43):
they decided we're gonna go We're gonna draft a wide receiver,
but he's hurt. We're not gonna really go crazy. We
try to use Antonio Brown. That didn't work. And then
the Patriots it's always if they decided, well, this is
gonna be our team, this is gonna be our offense.
Brady is on the decline. He's not the same quarterback
he was three four years ago, but it doesn't mean
he's still not an upper echelon quarterback. But he needs
(19:04):
weapons to succeed. He needs players now to carry him
a little bit like he's carried them for the past, oh,
you know, a dozen or so seasons. He's not gonna
get that in New England. They're not gonna go out
and say, Tom, we're building around you now another four years.
You're gonna play great. We're gonna go get you two
more wide receivers, another couple of running backs, we're gonna do.
They didn't do it. It's the same cast of character
(19:25):
as a year old er a year more tread on
their tires and you see the offense wasn't what it was.
The Patriots aren't going to go out and try to
build around Brady and build a great offense. So if
he wants to keep the legend of Tom Brady going
and he wants to still be Tom Brady icon, he's
got to place someplace where he's gonna be one more appreciated,
where the general manager is gonna say, Tom, whatever you need,
(19:47):
how many wide receivers, will draft a wide receiver in
every round. If you want, we'll go sign four running
backs in free agency. Whatever you want, Tom will do it.
That's what he wants, that's what he needs to succeed.
He needs those weapons around him to still be Tom
Brady because if he goes back to New England, it's
gonna be like this again, and then it's gonna be boy,
Tom Brady really is losing it and it might not
even be as good as it was this year. So
(20:09):
that's why it kind of has to go, because he's
got to go someplace where we're gonna make sure, we
do everything to make you succeed, where in New England's
just hey, do what you come with this? Do we
come with these parts? And uh, hey, if you're Tom Brady,
he'll do it. If not, okay, but these are the
parts you're using. This is how you're gonna build the
team well, And that's really the the bigger part of things.
It's not so much you want him, it's how much
(20:30):
can you reconfigure the roster that you have Because unless
Gronkowski walks back through that door, maybe maybe not, we'll see.
But he likes the media world and in w W
E ties and all that fun stuff, hanging out with
Mojo rawling and those guys. Again that perhaps that doors closed.
Ben Watson in his mid thirties one or two plays
(20:53):
and he had a big catch called back during their
loss to Tennessee, but certainly not a difference maker. Harry
a full off season of work, cool, mohammed'san new just
a guy. Julian Edelman another year older, like they completely
have to re configure what's there and then working against
the cap to see whether you can do that right,
(21:14):
because there's gonna be you're gonna bleed some people off
the defense as well. You've got a number of guys
that gotta get paid on that side of the ball,
so you're not bringing back that same eleven. So I
think that's the harder part. But it's not the ultimatum
that you want to put out at this point. Right,
address some of it, as Brady did, but it's gonna
(21:35):
be on his terms, or at least that's how he
sets it up, without wagging the finger and without getting
and doing the strong arm in front of a microphone. Okay, okay,
So if you want to play that out, do you
honestly think Belichick and Craft are gonna go? You know,
Tom's what boy, Tom's Tom's got us by the short ones.
(21:57):
Let's do what he says. That's that's not gonna work. No,
But but it's also a you were there for two decades, right,
why blow it up? Is really my point? Right? The
way you wanted him to message it is him double burning.
He's going all kid rock, walking back and forth on
the stage and flipping everybody off. That's not Brady style, right.
(22:18):
He might do that on the sideline, he might end
f a few guys along the way, but in this message,
there's no reason to lighten and torch what you just
did for two decades of absolute brilliance. Right, But he
also knows that if he's gonna if he he knows
if I try to have a power play that I
need better weapons, are I'm gone, is gonna say no.
(22:42):
And that's fine. He knows that absolutely. It's that's why
I can't believe that this is the strategy, is that, well,
now I want concessions and I want you to help
me if I'm coming back. Belichick is gonna go. But
that but that's all discussions behind the scenes, and and
that's the They can fight in a boardroom and see
what you can do while we can fit this guy
under the cap and mumble this way and whatever else.
(23:05):
But Tom Brady's not gonna do all that publicly like Peyton.
Manning didn't do that when he left, right, I mean,
he took his tour, he did his due diligence, and
the way it worked out, the Colts were ready to
draft number one overall because things were so catastrophic when
he had to have the first of the full neck
surgeries and procedures to get himself right again. So but
(23:29):
you go about it a certain way right, whatever you
think and whatever the final story is written on the
Tom Brady Bill Belichick era, assuming this ends it right,
because they can't. They're not gonna pay him what market is,
because that's one of the other things of this. If
you pay him market, then you certainly can't get all
(23:50):
of the toys that he needs to retool the offense,
because that's the other part of it, is that he's
been playing under market value. And now some from some
reports he wants market. Well, if he wants market, that
cross off one other viable wide receiver or better offensive linemen.
So and also, are the Patriots gonna give him more?
And they're gonna say, you're right, Tom, here's thirty five
(24:12):
million bellicks. Is gonna go, Uh, We're not giving this
guy who's near the end thirty five million dollars. That's
the he know all these things that that's not gonna happen.
He's not gonna suddenly just threaten to leave and they're
gonna give him weapons or they're gonna give him one.
And I'm not saying that none of this is strategy,
but but all of this is just I'm saying my piece.
(24:34):
And that's it. Like because going with any strong message
of I hope to be back or any of that.
It's just but but it is though, because it is
the flipping off the Patriots craft and Belichick He's He
didn't mention the Patriots at all. Didn't even say that
a half team, we're all smart enough to hope to
be back with the Patriots, hope to be back playing
(24:56):
for you next year. Couldn't even say that. He can
say for the fans, hey, I hope to be back
in front of you next year with the Jets, hope
to be back in front of you next year. He
could all these things that he could say that he
knows he could say, they could make it easy. He didn't.
Obviously this was a well crafted because this wasn't just
Antonio Brown. I'm gonna sit down and say whatever the
(25:16):
hell comes to my head. Man, if it helps me,
it hurts me, I don't care. This was I know
exactly what I'm doing by making this Instagram post. I
am saying goodbye, and I'm making sure that the door
is closed. And there's no way you can interpret this
as hey, here's a power play, here's me wanting more money,
because I know none of those things are gonna work, right,
But it's also not leaving yourself looking like a bully
(25:37):
or that you're mad about it or complaining. This is
just as he's telling us, I'm leaving. That's my whole point.
He's saying, I'm leaving. This has been great, Bye, I'll
see you. You still have two months go play for
Adam Gaze. He's not gonna go, well, you're a guy, Sam.
(25:58):
Sam goes to the Patriots like it's up and wins
Super Bowl. After Super Bowl, that would be at least
you went be a chat. So that look, that's really
the last half hour is all the evidence you need
that that's what Tom Brady is trying to accomplish here
with this. I mean it's I don't see how every
day that goes by people can say, oh, well maybe,
(26:19):
but not. The only big news in the NFL today
is Tom Brady coming up in ninety Twods what Jerry
Jones isn't telling us about Mike McCarthy, who spoke for
the first time since being hired as the Cowboys head coach.
But first, be sure to catch live editions of The
Jason Smith Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm
Eastern seven pm Pacific. So today Mike McCarthy was introduced
(26:44):
as the new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, and
he was very emotional in his press conference. You know,
he talked about how he didn't know how many words
he was going to get through before he got emotional,
and that was great stuff. But then Jerry Jones, of course,
Jerry Jones had to talk. You know, you're not gonna
be a press conference and Jerry Jones doesn't get to talk.
And Jerry Jones said something that really should shed light
(27:04):
on the Cowboys interview process. Here he is talking about
his new head coaching when he knew he wanted Mike McCarthy.
I knew Mike McCarthy before he ever walked through these doors,
and I knew it from a lot of different directions.
So that while our time together initially talking about this
(27:25):
job was meaningful, so much more went into how and
why he's sitting at this table to day. And then
we played cards against humanity. Uh boy, I tell you what,
he he's got a real dirty mind. Um you know,
said did some things. Uh that was on the sleep
over Saturday, and then watched die Hard and die Hard too.
(27:46):
They had a big marathon of both those movies on on.
You know, Bruce Willis should have just kept sneakers on.
I just got told Mike that and he agreed. We
talked about that a bit, and then uh we made marshmallows,
had some smores. Of course, my s'mores had diamonds around him,
edible diamonds, and uh then he went to bed, woke
up and grabbed him, you know, put him in a headlock,
and uh told him that you're gonna be the head
(28:07):
coach of the Cowboys or or you're not leaving here
and you're gonna be a permanent resident. And he signed.
And so Mike's the guy. You heard him say, I
know so much about Mike McCarthy, going on and on
about what a great candidate Mike McCarthy is. Well, he's
his head coach, that's but he makes it sound job
by rong. He makes it sound like Mike McCarthy was
(28:29):
my guy from the beginning. Now, this is really telling
into what most likely happened with the Cowboys in their
search for a new head coach the day the season ended.
All Right, Jerry Jones makes it sound like I wanted
Mike McCarthy, right, away. Nothing, No talk about Mike McCarthy
on Monday. Just meeting with Jason Garrett Monday, Meet with
(28:51):
Jason Garrett on Tuesday, meet with Jason Garrett on Wednesday,
meet with Jason Garrett on Thursday. Nothing about Mike McCarthy.
Nothing that mikecarthy was gonna be even on the radar
screen for the Dallas Cowboys. While the meetings are going on,
the Cowboys are saying, we're still meeting with Jason Garrett.
Meetings are scheduled for Mike McCarthy with the New York Giants.
(29:13):
Meets the New York Giants on Friday. Finally, on on
late Friday, we get two names, Mike McCarthy Marvin Lewis,
and the Cowboys are gonna talk to both of them.
And then twenty four hours later, McCarthy's got to sleep
over at Jerry Jones's house and the next day he's
the Cowboys head coach. So hang on one second, he
was always the guy that you had to have. Why
(29:36):
did you let a week go by where he could
have interviewed someplace else, which he did and gotten a
job someplace else. The Giants could have not let them
leave their facility on Friday. You knew right away he
was gonna be a hot candidate, but you waited a
full whole week and kept your head coach all the
way until Friday. Oh, McCarthy's interviewing. Now we gotta go
get Mike McCarthy. I guarantee this, I guarantee you this.
(29:59):
He had those big names we talked about, Urban Meyer,
Lincoln Riley, maybe the mystery candidate. He had big names,
and they told him no, behind the scenes, wasn't gonna
work out. So then he said, Okay, I'm not gonna
get the guy I want that, I really want. Let's
go get Mike McCarthy. He's our fallback. Now. We gotta
(30:20):
go get him, because something he came together really really fast.
Nothing all week long, all week long, well McCarthy's interviews,
gonna talk to the Brown he's gonna talk to you,
he's gonna talk to everything else. Might be nothing from
the Cowboys, just meetings with Jason Garrett. And then suddenly, oh,
now we're gonna have Mike McCarthy. He wanted those big
names we talked about. He's got those guys that no
one's talking about, and he's very comfortable with this. Process
(30:40):
playing out long because no one's talking about the guys
he want. Then suddenly it's Mike McCarthy. He had those
guys and like it could have been Urban Meyer, could
have been Lincoln Riley, whatever it was, but what he
got rebuffed and it happened back channel because Jerry Jones
is not gonna be denied. So it's like, listen, do
you want this job? Yeah? Really not gonna work out.
All right, I'm moving on. And then suddenly Mike mcarthy,
that's coach with the Cowboys. Whatever. The guy he really
(31:03):
wanted he couldn't get. So then McCarthy was a really
fast plan B part of it. It always goes back
to control, right, and that's this cycles. Really the subtitle
of the coaching hiring process this time around was how
much do I get to help pick groceries and build
a program? As it were? I mean, you listened to
(31:25):
Matt Rule as he makes you want to run through
a wall about how about he loves football? Uh, as
you go through his whole pace. For Jerry Jones, as
we've talked about, part of it was still you've gotta
get rid of a family member in Jason Garrett. So
you're while you're floating and casting your wider net. It's
(31:46):
still going to be about, all right, let's try to
swing for the fences, and I guarantee any of those
back channel conversations where you're gonna shut the hell up
and stay out of the way, to which he said, no,
I'm I'm the decider. This is what I do. I'm
the GM. So yeah, I'm still going to be involved.
And I think that was enough to keep folks out
(32:07):
as opposed to Mike McCarthy wants back into the game. Right,
all the interviews that we saw the thing with Peter King, Yes,
I'm a different guy after a year away, and here's
everybody talking about a day spent at Pro Football Focus,
embracing analytics learning you didn't do it, you weren't working yet,
you learned all this stuff about coaching, like okay, cool,
(32:30):
that's all fine and good. And then Jerry saying this
was the only guy that we wanted. All right, really,
now you just gave more fodder to the whole Barvin Lewis.
But but just from the idea of this is the
only guy I ever wanted in this whole nine yards,
it's like just it's it's just bad, bad optics, and
it's just a bad lines. Like look, we we did
(32:51):
a week search. You can tell me how much you
loved him from Afar and you could still say, well
he still owes me one you know, you know Dez
and whatever else. But the fact is that this is
the guy he's decided on, and now it's gonna be
the greatest thing ever. Just like he tried to prop
up Jason Garrett, I got to but it was a
(33:14):
fast plan B because what he really wanted didn't happen.
Couldn't pull the rabbit out of the hat that he
thought he was gonna do it. So now suddenly here's
Mike McCarthy. I guarantee that a dealmaker couldn't make the
great deal twitter At how about a frescup? Mike gets
swollen down The Jason Smith Show with my best friend
Mike Carmen. Coming up next, a story coming off the
play of the weekend in the NFL. You just gota here,
(33:35):
It's next on Fox. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at
ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
and the I Heart Radio app Bold Bull Fox Sports Radio. Yes,
a lot of the music you're hearing tonight celebrities celebrating
a birthday today, whether here or posthumously. To go along
(33:56):
with Justin Frostburg, we'll hear some of the musical stylings
of Fra Spurg later on in the show. It's gonna
do some music rings a lot of doorbells while in
certain sequences. But do we have a crazy story for
you out of the National Football League and it involves
the play of the weekend, Kyle Rudolph's touchdown still under
(34:18):
a lot of controversy. Did he push off the touchdown
that beat the Saints and sent the Saints to the
offseason the Vikings onto the divisional round of the playoffs.
As Kyle Rudolph tells, the story on social media has
an unfold. A member of the media, someone Kyle Rudolph
didn't know, not a national figure, not a beat reporter
(34:38):
who covers the team all the time, but a member
of the media. He didn't know who it was. Somebody
who got credential, Let's put it that way, right, someone
who found his way with a media credential. So it
wasn't Ben mallor was not. It was managing came into
the locker room and asked Kyle Rudolph for his gloves.
He said, Hey, I want to auction these off for charity,
do you mind? And Kyle Rudolph said, not only will
(35:00):
I give them to you, I'll autograph him for you.
So he autographs them and gives them to this guy. Now,
I can't believe you'd actually do that. I mean, I
know you're caught up in a lot of hey, great,
great stuff going on in the locker room, but you know,
somebody comes up to you and just says, hey, if
your gloves are check? Yeah, sure. But he trust this
person and signs the gloves, gives him to him, and
(35:23):
then it turns out a couple of days later, as
we find out today, the person who got those gloves
put them on eBay and sold them only got three
and seventy five bucks for him, which is kind of shocked.
Honest he bought I would have I would have bought
those without question if I knew they were available for
(35:45):
This is like buying the football that Brett far through
the pick on across the middle. This is like buying
the football the Gary Anderson kicked wide in the NFC
Championship game. This is like, I mean, this is Vikings.
It's like having the ball from the Minneapolis Miracle. You know,
this is an is a really big deal from a
history of this team and Kirk Cousins and everything else.
(36:05):
It goes for three and seventy five bucks, which is insane.
Here's where the story has a great ending. The person
who bought them didn't know just I'm bidding on this
on eBay. Great Kyle Rudolph's gloves. When he finds out
that Kyle Rudolph they were his gloves and they were
taking supposedly out there for charity. The guy who bought
the gloves agreed to give that money to charity, so
(36:27):
he's giving that up and Kyle Rudolph, you know, given
given the gloves, and Kyle rudolphs gonna get him a
pair of his gloves from this weekend's game. So the
gloves the money are going to charity. It turns out great,
and he's gonna get a glove gloves of Kyle Rudolph's
this week and so now he just has to make
another big touchdown catch to win the game. So it
all turns out well. But this guy man who goes
(36:49):
into the locker room and says, this is for charity,
and I'm putting this out on eBay. I mean, now
I'm waiting to find out that, hey, this was for
a charity somewhere, but we would have found that outline.
I mean, this story has been enough where the guy
bought it. I didn't know if you're trying to clear
your name, Hey, you're making an announcement saying, hey, WHOA, whoa,
this money is going here, X, Y and Z. There's
been none of that. That's a special person that can
(37:11):
do the seller Purple Planet nineteen UM frequent eBay user
with a nin stars Scott's burner account. You know, Scott
Shapiro was wearing a brand new shirt and power tie today,
So maybe this is the These are the actual gloves,
(37:32):
I mean a very short description he made the winning catch.
These are the actual gloves he war and with a
picture of the gloves up there in three seventy five
your final I mean, he's also got a Mason Rudolph
game used towel um for sale and some some three
game used to Mason Rudolph game used. I don't even
know that that's a Mason. Do you even know? I
(37:55):
don't know. There's a picture of a guy holding the towel. Oh,
here's Mason Rudolph holding a white towel. Here's a white
it's not a picture at Mason Rudolph with the towel.
It's just a black Mason Rudolph's towel. That must be
the towel. No go buy a DNA kid. You know
me on it. When you see people on eBay who
do this once in a while, and they say, I'm
(38:17):
selling my lucky shirt because I'm getting married. This shirt.
I've met so many girls and had one night stands.
It's a magical shirt. This girl came up to me
and that this shirt is now blessed and you're gonna
find yourself in great luck with ladies. And then there's
a bit of their like hundred and fifty dollars. It's
a fake bid, and and every guy goes, oh, I
gotta get the magical shirt. I'm gonna buy it. I'm
(38:38):
gonna hook up with so many girls. I really a
Mason Rudolph towel. I don't know what. Just striculating the man.
The man sold these gloves for three seventy five, the
guy that got him doing good things, and he's created
an account by which folks can keep contributing to the
children's hospital. So there's gonna be a lot of good
that comes out of this. Just you know, watch who
(39:00):
gets credential. I'd watch who. You don't give glove to
people you don't know, Jason. Yeah, you know how much
asks you can get in Minnesota without towel. It's a
fair point. It's a Mason row. Okay. Coming up next,
we got the biggest story out of the NFL. Jason Smith,
Mike Harmon. This is Fox Sports Radio, Frostburg is Happy.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
(39:22):
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven
pm Pacific. Greetings, Welcome inside our two of The Jason
Smith Show of my best friend Mike Harmon again. Just
you know what, you've got something you want? I want
to make money. Just tell somebody give me this. I'll
sell it for charity. Sell it on eBay, make your cash,
make your cat. You want my game used blue shorts,
(39:47):
you know, come on radio Warren Shorts. I'll sign him
and you can auction them off. You know, we talked
a few minutes ago about Kyle Rudolph and this, this
is an incredible story. The gloves he used to catch
the touchdown past this weekend, which is out one of
the most famous plays in all of Minnesota vikings Lore.
Remember the media came up to him in the locker
mattress that can I have your gloves? Gonna sell him
(40:07):
for charity. Kyle Rudolph said yes, gave him to the guy.
He said, I'll leave an autograph him for a He
autographed him, guy went out and sold him on eBay,
which is that you're a special guy to do that
turned out to have a good ending. The person who
bought them didn't realize it is giving him back. Kyle
Rudolph says, awesome, thank you so much. Gonna get you
my gloves that I used this weekend in in the
divisional playoff game. So it turns out to be pretty good.
(40:29):
But this whole game us stuff, you know, because this
guy that sold these gloves on eBay, game used Mason
Rudolph towel. Yeah, I mean all this game used stuff.
I mean really, I mean, I mean, first of all,
I I highly doubt anything that's really game. I mean
these gloves. Obviously Kyle Rudolf said I gave him to
(40:51):
them here they are an eBay. But anything that says
game used, I never believe this game. No, there's always
you gotta have the providence. And I mean you're the member, Bill,
you a guy. But I if you told me, hey,
these are Mike Harmon and he is wearing purple sneakers tonight.
If you told me these sneakers were worn by Barney
in the very famous sketch in which Charles Barkley punched
him and knocked them down on SNL, I would go,
(41:13):
you know, I know you, you're my best friend, but
I don't believe those are I mean, you'd have to
go back through the Bruder film. You'd have to go.
Even then I can figure out whether they're at least
the same style issues, because that's a whole other piece
of those are the I love you, you love me?
And that's right from season two, episode one, when Selena
Gomez was part of the cast. How about that there's
(41:35):
some specificity because if I start layering on the story,
got actually has seen the video on YouTube, so he
must be telling the truth. But see that that's where
it becomes a. All right, what's the chain of you know, ownership? Right?
Where did they did you get him from a team source?
You get him directly from a player? Look getting a towel,
(41:56):
All right, he's touched it. Whatever I'm I suppose you
can probably go through D n A and and whatever
else if you really want to go that far, if
you want to believe that. I mean, autographs, it's the
same thing. You know, where's the story? Where'd you get it?
There's services that can authenticate. They do the same for
some of the game you stuff, and if it goes
(42:16):
through the equipment guy, which some of it does, maybe
there's a little bit more to it. But I mean
we we know ex athletes, right they get tons of
shoes and merch sent to them and they handed along.
Maybe they wore it once during a workout. All right,
it's a Vet Warren now right. I mean you can
start saying, well, but you can start changing up the
(42:37):
terminology as you roll through, and and certainly the trading
card companies are held to a particular standard when it
comes to it, and how they procure old uniforms and
how they're cataloged and used and everything else. And you
have your certificates of authenticity, and then it becomes again,
do you trust the person who wrote the certificate of
(42:59):
authent city? So you know, sometimes you have fake jerseys
make their way to the market. Well, but I mean
that there there's that that whole scandal which got confusing
for folks. All Right, did he actually wear this? Was
it from a game? Was it not from a game?
Was it a practice? Did he do it? Use it
in warmups and then change for some reason, Because that's
a whole other way you can exploit the system too. Yeah,
(43:21):
I word for, you know, my workout, and then I
went in and changed into you know, either another jersey
or cleats or whatever. I mean, it's a big thing.
But the fact that this only went for three seventy
five shock is shocking. That that's like, that's like in
fantasy where you see a trade that's made in your
fantasy league. You go, that's all the guy gave up
(43:41):
for him. How does that? Well, why don't you call me?
I'd have given you more for him. But but this
is the same thing of you know, going back to
all right, it's someone with nine plus positive feedback messages
on eBay, so all right, built up a little bit
of and again you can build up through through fraud
along the way to establishing multiple ideas if you needed to,
(44:03):
because there's been some that. Boy, how do you know
all this stuff? How do you know? What do you what?
Are you trying to try to make sure that I'm
not getting taken If I go into the marketplace for
those game used Dick underwear, Wait, I gotta game used
ron Carkovice helmet from m Harmon Dome. I mean, did
you think I would sell such a prize piece of
memorabilia if you could get me a carcovice helmet? Are
(44:25):
you kidding me? If you can get me the bat
that went through the zone at the same angle, no
matter whether it was a fact ball, curveball, or nugler.
What about Albert Bell's cork bat? He wanted to keep those.
We we had a battle. But it's just I think
I think Harmon's I gotta find on it. I think
Harmon is selling fake merchandise on he knows an awful
(44:46):
lot about this. It's it's an area of interest. Have
you seen line name as Eli managed so hit up
Mike get uncut gems dot com. No, I mean realized
I think maybe you know a little bit too much
about this or I know enough to help people. Do
you have one of those I things in your what
do they call what do they call the has the
focus that the jewelers use. No, I don't have the monocle.
(45:12):
I forget what that's actually you do not have monocles.
I do want to go see uncut gems and that
we can talk about it next week. But what do
you have a contact called Heli Manning? I don't understand
why is why is that? Well? You know, I get
I get a little bit wordy here at Fox Sports Radio,
and we get a little cheeky at times. Uh so
(45:34):
again we'll have more. That's an insane story involved in
Kyle Rudolph. Again, good that it turned out well for
him at the end that the gloves were found and
he's going to give a pair to the guy that
bought them and and things are working out okay. But boy,
that's some kind of special guy that says, yeah, give
me those for charity. Yeah, my front pocket, that's a charity.
But that's just it. And they only go for three
seventy five because obviously folks didn't trust where they came from. Meanwhile,
(45:57):
Tom Brady said more with an in to Graham post
today than he possibly could have had. He had a
press conference fully announcing his intentions where he wants to
play football next season. Brady put a long post out
on his Instagram page earlier today. Now it has over
a million likes on Instagram. I'm not going to read
the whole post. It's a long post, but believe me,
(46:18):
I'm not leaving anything out of what Brady is saying.
But I'm gonna hit the highlights for you because it's
very important. He starts off by saying, I just wanted
to say to all of our fans, thank you. After
a few days of reflection, I am so grateful and
humbled by the unconditional support you have shown me the
past two decades. He goes on to talk about what
(46:39):
a special experience was for him to win and play,
and then he says, every one of us that works
at you Lette Stadium strive to do their best, spent
themselves at a worthy cause, and prepared to fail while
daring greatly. He goes on to talk about what it
means to work as a team and then finishes by
saying you can learn from failure, pick yourself up with
(47:00):
enthusiasm and place yourself in the arena again. And that's
right where you will find me, because I know I
still have more to prove. I do like that. He's
been taken in the last couple of days to read
a lot of Teddy Roosevelt, well Teddy Roosevelt, and good
Teddy Roosevelt quotes, and you get the man in the
arena and at the end, it walks softly carry a
big stick. That's what it is. But he had he
(47:21):
had the big Instagram stick here because Tom Brady is
telling everyone, I am leaving New England. I am not
leaving anything to chance, because if I really wanted to,
if I wanted to come back, it's very easy for
me to just say I hope I'm back in front
of you next year. But he doesn't say that. No
(47:41):
one would hold him to it. This wouldn't be all
you said. This is what literally anybody else in his
situation would say. This is what anybody who wants to
go back to the team he played for would say,
because it's an easy way to end the controversy. I
hope to be back in front of you next year.
I hope to be back with the Pats, but I
who knows what the future holds. That would at least
(48:02):
tamp the story down for a while, but he doesn't
say that. He also doesn't mention the Patriots by name.
He mentions Gillette Stadium right, doesn't say I'll be back
in front of you, say I have more to prove
I'll be back in the arena again. I'm going with
the big quote again. He took so much care with
this Instagram post to make sure we know I'm not
(48:22):
mentioning the Patriots. I'm thanking the fans, I'm saying goodbye,
And all he would it was it's the smallest gesture
he had to do to say I hope I'm back
next year. And even if he did that, he would
even put the onus on Bob Craft and Bill Belichick
to bring him back, because nobody wants to lose this
war of Tom Brady leaving. Brady doesn't want to look
(48:44):
like the bad guy, and Belichicken and Craft don't want
to look like the bad guys. He would put pressure
on them to be the bad because of he said
I hope I'm back, because then the fans of he
would say, really, you're not gonna bring Tommy back after
all these years. Tommy's not coming back, and it's all
your fault. But Brady didn't do that because he wants
people to know I am leaving. If there was any
chance of him coming back, there would have been at
(49:05):
least some kind of warmth between Brady and Belichick and
Craft the past couple of weeks when his future became
a hot topic of conversation, because when you get to
the playoffs, hey, is this so and so's last game?
This could be their last game. There was none of that.
There was no warmth, not that you're getting from Belichick,
but there's nothing from Brady, no hint of boy, hey
have had great times here. I hope to continue them.
(49:25):
Bob Kraft, the best thing he could say is I
hope he comes back or he retires. Oh so, either
hope he plays for us or he doesn't play at all.
What kind of endorsement is that from the owner? There
would be more warmth, There would be more, there would
be just a little bit of the door is open,
but there is not in this Instagram post. Because Brady
is media social media savvy, he knows what he says
and how it's going to be interpreted he's saying what
(49:48):
he's saying. If you think he's trying to pull a
power play to say, well, now, hey, I could leave,
you gotta go get me more weapons, you gotta give
me more money. Brady knows how that's going to end.
He knows that that it's gonna end with the Patriot
shrugging their shoulders, going we're not gonna give you more money.
We're not gonna pay you for services rendered. Belichick has
kicked people out of town faster than that, Oh you
(50:08):
want more weapons, You're not gonna do it. They didn't
do it this year. And Brady knows he's got to
go someplace where the has weapons him to be able
to succeed. And he's not gonna hold the Patriots over
a bower for anything. Belichick, Like I said, Beltich gonna
shrugged shoulders and go, oh yeah, yeah, okay, see you
you're gonna leave you Tom. Brady knows I'm not gonna
win that war with Belichick and even Craft that hey,
(50:31):
I could leave if you don't help me out more.
He knows that's so none of this I see is
even being something calculated by him to say all right,
Now I gotta find a way to get back and
to have all the weapons come back and to get
a balance of power in New England. Again he knows
he doesn't have it. This is him saying goodbye and
telling us all I am leaving. I don't know where,
but I'm leaving. No. I think this is a good
(50:52):
exercise in brand management because there's nothing to be gained
by going and doing a flame out on the Patriot.
It's on Craft on Belichick and saying well, I hope
to be back, but the ball is in their court
and all that. You could read between the lines and
that's pretty much what he's saying. But there's no reason
to throw it up or have the gift of him
(51:12):
flipping the double birds at him while you're at I mean,
little stop flash thing. You know, they'd have to put
a bunch of warnings. This may induce seizures, but those
kind of things as part of the Instagram post, there's
no reason to But here it's the I still intend
to play football. Period. So now Robert Kraft and what
he said both have taking a very business like brand approach.
(51:35):
Like for the Patriots, it's well, we'd like to have
him back, but if he leaves, you know, that'd be
too bad. We'd like to see him retire instead of leaves, so,
you know, trying to tug at the hard string. Go
to the business side of it as well, and for
Brady obviously, they need a lot of a lot of
fixing from the old line to the run game to
(51:55):
be more consistent to the wide receiving corps. I mean,
there's so many things that have to be fixed there,
and finding a companying kicker assuming Gaskowski is not able
to come back, because that was another thing lost in
this season. I mean, everybody has injuries. You recognize how
much and how important a future Hall of Fame kicker
is in his absence. I mean in all, Seriously, I
(52:16):
don't think that's been brought up at all this week.
It's been a lot about the receivers and yes, and
they were terrible, but how many drives that you normally
could rely on a guy to be pretty dead on?
And now it's wait, who'd we sign again this week?
It's another one of those bleeping ex jet guys. They
(52:37):
all hanging out there. There's a lot of ex jets
that are looking for work, So I think there's a
little bit of brand management because you want to have
that relationship post career, right, you don't want it to
be some ugly, messy divorce. I will note this Keenan
Allen was one of the first people to respond with
a goat emoji, just to fuel the fire out there
for right there. But yeah, look, so that's kind of
(53:01):
what he said in between the lines by putting the
go tomoji. I don't see any any evidence of I'm
I'm trying to play a power plant. I'm not mentioned
the page. He knows I'm not going to win this war,
and why would you want to have a war to
come back to play for a team. It just doesn't
make It doesn't make sense. All of that will happen
(53:21):
behind the scenes, just like everything else the Patriots have done,
or at least that's the attempt. He's saying goodbye. He
is saying goodbye, and that's this Instagram saying goodbye Twitter,
And how about a fresco Mike and Swollen don the
Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon got
more NFL on the way, but straight ahead, it is
phenomenal news for the Lakers and Anthony Davis. We get
(53:43):
into what is now next for the guy with the injured.
But this is Fox Sports Radio. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon
weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven pm Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio Fox Sports Radio.
That Jason Smith Show with my bis friend Mike Harmon
(54:07):
Live from the Geico Studios. Where the Knicks, I mean,
what what? What an effort? What an effort? Tonight? They
scored a hundred and four points to night against Utah.
Good job, good effort, only losing four that close. It's
not bad playing without Julius Randall, who for personal reasons
(54:28):
missed the game, very distraught after the loss of the
Lakers last night and and wasn't with the team tonight.
You lost by thirty to the best team in the way.
He had some problems, was gonna happen, some anger. But
speaking of the Lakers, it is great news for them.
The biggest story in the NBA the m r I
on the rear posterior area of a D sacral contusion,
(54:53):
a movie on Cinemax late at night. The m r
I is negative on a D and the injury suffered
last night when he went up against Julius Randall a
very awkward play in which he landed on his tailbone.
He will travel with the Lakers on their upcoming road
trip again. They don't play again until Friday, so potentially
(55:13):
he could play Friday. But the best news is that
he is all right traveling with the team, and at
least they have avoided a huge bullet for now joining
us now on the hotline National NBA writer insider for
the Los Angeles Times. It is friend of the show
(55:34):
who had a bruised tailbone for the entire decade of
the two thousand's Dan, Woiki, what's happening? Dan? I'm glad
to hear that I'm not the only one who saw
a sacle contusion starring Shannon Tweet. You find it on IMDb.
It's there, It's there. It is a run tomatoes, very
(55:56):
undervalued alone. I mean the sequel was even better on
those rare very sexual You know, it's either that, Dan
or Sacrale contusions. When you go to a festival, right
music festival all day Saturday at the fair Grounds. Hey,
Metallica is gonna headline at eleven o'clock. That's pretty cool
(56:17):
at night. The first band that goes on at like
two o'clock in the afternoon is Sacral Contusion. They played
twenty minutes and you can't even buy t shirts at
the tent. We don't have Cacle Contusion stuff. Man. Sorry,
it's gonna be like the first It's gonna be like
the first day of Wade Cella, the three day Dwayne
Wade Festival with the Rere s Well, gonna they're gonna
(56:37):
bring out former to Paul Great Kevin Edwards on day
one earlier, something like that. Wow, you know, just just
really quick on on Wight Cella, which I like. I
feel like the Miami Heat are doing it because if
they don't Dwyne Dwayne Wade will cry and moan and
complain about why they're not doing enough for him. So
this is listen, let's just you know, let's let's cut
(56:58):
this off at the past. Do this great stuff for
Dwayne Wade doesn't have to complain about we're not doing
anything for him. I just think, God, he's not number
twenty UM, you know, I think. Look, it is a
very unique UM fan based star player relationship, even though
he was never the best player in my opinion, on
(57:19):
any of their title teams. I think Shack still was
the best player on the first team, even though Wade
was terrific in those finals, or at least you shot
a lot of free throws. Um, and then obviously you
know there was lebron Um. But but I just I
just think that maybe it was style or seam on
a nightly Bassis just watching him just like fly into
people or whatever it is. Um. The relationship between Dwayne
(57:42):
Wade and the Miami Heat fans is a that's a
real one. And look, three days is that overkill? Like? Absolutely?
You know, how how how slow are they going to
move the jersey up to the rabid? But but but
but I think you know, whatever we're talking about, I
guess good on them, alright, says excited. I'm very excited.
(58:03):
I'm gonna do so much, Molly, guys, sacle Contusion is
playing very early a way, jealous, I'm make sure you
get full effects by time the headliners on. If you
can take it early, Dan, obviously the Lakers get dodge
a bullet with the help of a d whether he
plays Friday or in the second game, at least he's
traveling with them. Does this give them a bit of
a scare to say, hey, we gotta make sure we
(58:26):
we fill out this roster, and the Kyle Kuzma trade
talking all the Laker trade talk kind of amps up
a little bit because of this scare. I mean he
kind of the effects of this right so. Um well,
Frank Bold was talking yesterday as the ACE reporter that
I am. I was camped out in the Staple Center's
hallways trying to like get a glimpse of how they're
gonna get a d out of the building. They were
(58:47):
trying to clear out media and they didn't want anybody
to see when like this is a guy who was
literally like kind of like George Constanza the time, a
sort of deduction post that's like sort of how he's
laying on the back of a golf cart like you
can't sit right and he can't and he can't walk,
and you watch him kind of really gingerly like get
(59:07):
in the back seat of a car, and it's just
sort of like, oh, like this doesn't look great. Um
obviously X rays negatives, um m r I do you know,
show the mustlers like he's gonna be okay. Um, But
if they were scared, like wouldn't he just take these
two games off? Like, wouldn't he just stay at home
and kind of you know, I don't know, sitting up
(59:30):
spath or whatever it is you do for this injury. Uh.
To me, it's they are attacking the regular season with
the tanasa that should be rewarded and it should be applauded. Um.
But and I've said this to you guys before, I've
said it to Lebron. I've I've said it to anybody
who listen. The single biggest thing that opposing executives say
(59:51):
when they kind of wonder about where the Lakers are at,
it's sort of like what are they doing right now? Like? Why?
Is why? Every time if someone questionable do this, do
they play? Um? You know, And it's not it's not
saying take nights off for the sake of just taking
nights off. These are guys that are literally playing through illness,
playing through you know, injuries. Lebron before the game against
the Knicks, you know, I was walking around the locker
(01:00:13):
room with a he's he's you know, he's sick. He's
walking on the locker room with you know, his sweats
on a winner hat and literally a like gallon bag
of sl s oranges. He's trying everything again to like
either you know, I guess that there are lemons to
avoid scurvy, but like trying, you know, trying his passages
(01:00:35):
vitamin C up. And it's just sort of like for
what and I and and I get that there are
fans that paid a lot of money to go to
that game to see Lebron James playing, and I applaud
his sort of his desire to to fulfill his I guess,
his duty to those people, and to fulfill sort of
his duties of the Lakers. And they talked about this,
they say, like, you know, they see one guy play HT,
(01:00:56):
they all want to play HERT. And I just I
just don't get it. Right now, they're the best team
in the West. They might be the best team in
the NBA, despite losing twice to the Clippers, despite losing
to the Box like big, big, big picture. And by
that I don't mean three years from now big picture.
I mean this seems got to be right come you know,
May and June and playing through sord Groins and Bruce
(01:01:20):
coxases and or cox i um or whatever. It just
seems to me like a little short sighted Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon from The Guy Go Fox Sports
Radio Studios. I had so many one liners there that
it's too early in the evening to just work with those.
It's Dan Woik our body, national NBA rider and insider
(01:01:41):
at the l A Times at Dan Wicky Sports is
where you find him on Twitter. Just to stay with
that though, Dan, you know a lot of the rumors
about Kyle Kuzma and his future go back to the
trainer comments and everything else. Lebron holds grudges, but it's
really no secret to anybody that's watched that they need
some help. I mean, he's there's third leading score and
(01:02:01):
eleven eight and he's been inconsistent throughout. So how much
different is this roster look at a couple of weeks
from now. Well, I mean I think right like Darren
Collinson to me is sort of the plug and play person. Um,
assuming he wants to play, assuming he wants to come back.
That seems to me to be the the straightest line
towards improvement. Um. The Kuzma thing is tricky because, um,
(01:02:23):
his value was not tremendous like they're they're they're definitely
scouts in the league, guys that are paid to kind
of evaluate these guys who will go as far as
to say that, like, you know, I hate this guy
as a player. U. Now they're like he has bigger
fans than that, but like he also has some people
are pretty strong detractors. And I think, yeah, he's a
young guy, but like young guys who only score. Um,
(01:02:45):
you know, it's it's just not that. It's just not
that appealing, um to a lot of scouts, to a
lot of teams. Um, you have to have the ball
in his hand a lot ad mitigates what your other
guys in the cork can do. And the first starting
thing with a guy like Kyle Kuzma is like if
you watch him for a week, you could talk to
yourself and him being you know, kind of the sharp shooting.
You know, he's got great size, he moves about the ball. Um.
(01:03:08):
You know, he's a guy physically who should be able
to compete on defense and you know being that's what
all the talk was out of Team USA. Um, but
that's not really it's just out there every night. It
just isn't. And yeah, playing with Lebron and playing with
a D is tough for a guy who um was
allowed to shoot every time he touched it, you know,
(01:03:28):
the first two years in the NBA. I think that's
an adjustment, But you know, I still don't know, like
if the goal is to find a guy who can
average sixteen or seventeen points a game, right, if that's
like sort of the goal. I don't know how Kyle
Kuzma gets you bad Um. You know, I don't think
he gets you. Marcus Morris, I don't think that's enough. Um.
(01:03:50):
You know, his salary, you know, does he get you
Robert Covington in Minnesota? Do you feel better if Robert
Covington's the third best player? I'm the Lakers like maybe
a little Um, but it's not like sort of that
big jump guy it like, you know, I think they're
not going to get Um, you know, playing Bogdanovitch for
this or I'm sorry for for you know, straight up
(01:04:11):
for him. It's just not gonna happen. And even still,
that's still a pretty big leap and responsibility from being
a guy who comes off the bench and sector end
up being the third best layer. UM. So I think
their pathways to improve it via trade obviously they all
run through with Kyle queensmdial. It's just I'll be interested
to see how much Rob blincol can can a drum
up an interest in him. Can you sell them to
(01:04:33):
other other executives, Um, get guys overlook as falls and
be can you work the salary cap math in a
way where you know they can bring back a guy
who makes fourteen million dollars um? You know, and can
it can make a real impact instead of just making
finding a guy who's just a marginal improved. Well, and
it's gonna find a way to bring some first round
picks back and then you make make make chase a
(01:04:55):
lot easier. Sure, yeah, I mean, and I mean that's
the other problem too, Right, It's like it's the only
thing Sweetens like they don't like so, um, you know
they have one other young player essentially on the roster
and Taylon Horton Tucker, Um, you know who's been up
and back between the glegue mostly in the glass all year,
and um, you know, guys like him. He's an interesting player.
But it's and I don't think he's a guy like
(01:05:16):
let's say, you know it's the Knicks for instance, Like
I don't think he's a guy where Steve Mills is
like okay, like yeah, like Wilson, Bucket, Morris, Now it's
the Knicks. Come on, it's the Knicks. You never know,
it's it's it's a possibility, I suppose, but uh, you know,
I think it's just like they're the bidding for all
of these other players because there are other contenders that
(01:05:37):
are looking for these types of players too, um, and
those teams can simply off from more um. What they
really do is theyde Kyle Kuzma to have like three
awesome weeks and string together some consistency and stuff like
that in a way that he has an all season,
stay healthy, stay on the court. Um, you know, and
it's it's weird. I kind of thought, actually maybe the
the injury, if he missed a week or two would
(01:05:58):
be a silver lining. But like because maybe Kyle Kuzman
do on track, is more of a focal point in
the offense and and do that, but that doesn't appear.
That's like that's gonna be the case. He's gonna have
to figure out what those those guys on the floor.
The Twitter account is dan Wicky Sports. That's Dan Wicky Sports,
national NBA writer for the l a times. Dan has
always appreciated. I we'll look forward. I'll try to get
(01:06:19):
tickets for us for wait Chella. Yeah, I'm very excited.
Thank you. Uh trust me, I'm going to solve all
the Lakers problems coming up in ninety seconds. Be sure
to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific.
Uh So, now, I'm going to solve all the Lakers problems. Please.
(01:06:42):
It's they've they've been so bereft in them. There aren't
many it's well, it's it's about what's next. It's about
how are they going to advance on the playoffs when
they're a very thin team. It's Lebron, it's Anthony Davis,
and it's oh boy, lookout. The A D situation, you
(01:07:02):
would hope would be a wake up call where the
Lakers would have to realize, oh, in a minute, we
really got to go out and get some shooters because
they have no other players they can count on for offense.
And you're not gonna win and championship with that roster.
You're just not. It's a regular season dominant roster because
in one out of a D two games. Hey, it's
it's tough beating Lebron, and it's tough beating Lebron and
a D. Look, how many nights do we watch Cleveland
(01:07:24):
and and the Cavaliers with a really bad roster, But
Lebron still had him at the top because it's one
out of eight two and you lose to Lebron all
the time. This is how it works. But in the
playoffs it's different, and if you don't have a deep team,
you are going home. The Lakers need is offense, and
Dan Boyki is right, Kyle KU's is not going to
(01:07:44):
bring back a lot in the trade. He's not. He's
an intriguing young player, but suddenly you're not gonna get
a really big important cog to this machine that's gonna
come back, and suddenly this is now our third best player. Well,
it does lend some some other alternate theories to what
happened net the last trade when they got rid of
everybody else. Wait, you didn't want Kyle here. We thought
(01:08:05):
they were protecting him the whole way we could. But
the Lakers need shooters, they need they need more players
who can provide offense. That is the way they have
everything else. They got sized, they have the attitude, they
have everything else they need from the bench guys. They
just have nobody who can score and their supporting players
and nobody they can count on to score. But the
scoring also being able to generate a shot forget about
(01:08:25):
just being shooters, right if Lebron's taking his twelve minutes
off or whatever that number is, and obviously in the playoffs,
that will fluctuate. But you need a guy that's going
to be able to create for himself and for others,
and that that guy's not on the team. Know that
that's what It's not about one guy. It's the Seriously,
the Lakers need three guys that can shoot. They need
(01:08:46):
three guys, and it doesn't need to be the superstar
guys to score eighteen points a game. They just need
shoot one dimensional players that can shoot. That's all they need.
Those guys are very cheap and they're very gettable. You
don't have to worry about the fact the Lakers don't
have a first round pick until. In fact, I think
the Mets are done paying Bobby Bonilla before the next
(01:09:07):
Lakers first round pick. I think they're tied together where
he actually has to play and be rostered by the
Lakers for at least one of them shot Bobby Bow.
You can know he can shoot. At this point, you
see Bobby Bow, Bobby Bows working down in the low
post man. That's the one brother. Take Bobby Bones. He
(01:09:28):
champion Bobby Bones to you. Brand is blowing up. This
is very simple in that when you're looking for a
one dimensional score, you can get those guys. It's not
gonna be very expensive. It's not gonna be something that's
gonna cost you. You're gonna find teams that are gonna
fall out of contention and want to offload players. Potentially
a team like the Pelicans would off want to offload J. J. Reddick,
(01:09:50):
whatever it is you have. Teams are gonna want to
worry about South. Those guys are gonna be out there.
You just have to be as stute enough to go
get them. Don't worry about making the big tra eid
And what's Kyle Kuzma gonna bring back? So I feel
like the Lakers have put everything in the what will
Kyle Kuzma bring back in a trade basket? And that's
not gonna be what helps you hold on to Kuzma.
(01:10:11):
Go get a couple of guys. All right, Igwa Dolla
is sitting around. Eventually, you gotta think Igwa Dolla is
gonna find a way gonna get extracting out of Memphis.
Something's going to happen. But you have to be able
to go get those guys when they can. Don't focus
on who to trade Kyle. What can you get for
next to nothing, for relieving salary cap money from another team,
whatever it is to get those shooters to come in.
(01:10:34):
That's where you gotta be focused for You're the Lakers,
not all Let's talk to all these teams and what's
the best offer for Kyle Kuzma, Because look, I agree
with Dan Woikie. We we said this left, it's not
this is not Kyle Kuzman in the middle of last season, right.
The best thing for the Lakers would be that if
Anthony Davis is hurt and Kuzma has a few big games,
all right now, you really want to trade him, all right,
his value as I let's go do it. But that's
(01:10:55):
really not feasible in my mind. What's feasible is, all right,
who are these guys, Let's let's go identifying and we
wait and as they fall out of contention. They will
be very cheap. They will get them, but you need
to or three of them if you're gonna win the championship. Well,
but I think one of the big pieces also to
make the make that evaluation now right, start working on
that because otherwise the Clippers and other would be contenders.
(01:11:18):
They're gonna be going after the same chips. So start
start making those back channel work and get Rich Paul
to do some more other than looking at m R. S. Well,
that's the thing. What Rich Paul can do with all
those clients. He can steer clients from other teams, two
different teams. Oh, I gotta really help a d out here.
So listen, you're gonna ask for this trade, You're gonna go,
You're gonna do this and do this. We can help
(01:11:39):
a d out. I'll take care of you next year.
To another track where you got a giant painting of
Rich Paul as the NBA puppet master. It's brilliant to
witter it out about a fresco Mike has swollen down
The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon.

as they introduced Mike McCarthy as their new head coach.
But with the XFL getting set to kick off games
coming up eight, former Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungee is gonna
(01:12:45):
be in the XFL. Very know that. XFL CEO and
Commissioner Oliver Luck doing the interview rounds, was asked, of course,
about his son Andrew, who abruptly retired during the preseason
this past year. He says that Andrew Luck has not
shown a desire to return to the NFL after his
retirement before the start of the season. Uh. He went
(01:13:08):
on CBS Sports Radio saying, quote, my wife and I
spend time with him in his growing family. He just
got his first child about six weeks ago. He's doing great.
I have not noticed any desires to come back and play,
but he's doing very well. I fully explok as someone
who has said he'll come back and play at some point,
I fully expected this to be the case. Right, the
(01:13:31):
guy just retired four months ago, not a year and
a half ago. All right. He players don't get the
itch to come back and play at the end of
a regular season the National Football League. The ones that
are done playing, they're done and want to break. Andrew
Luck needs to be healthy for going on an entire
year and then has to miss football in order to
(01:13:51):
come back from it. He just had his first kid
a few weeks ago. He spent the last couple of
months excited as hell about being a dad. And now
he's a dad, and and and you throw yourself headlong
into that. He hasn't had time enough time to miss
football game. He hasn't. It's only been four months. He
didn't retire a year ago. He retired at the end
of August. That's four months. You gotta give me a year,
(01:14:13):
a change in diapers. You gotta give him almost a
year of going through and feeling healthy, and that's we'll
start thinking, Okay, maybe now I can come back. I
wouldn't be surprised if it's another year. And then he decides,
you know what, now I've been out of the game
for a year and a half. I'm feeling really good
and I'm ready to come back. Now. It could be
as early as this spring, after he gets that clean
(01:14:36):
bill of health. The NFL Draft comes around, he's thinking,
all right, I'm feeling good. I might want to play again.
I have unfinished business. But I really I wouldn't be
surprised it was even another year from now that it's
coming to and we still Andrew luck didn't doesn't play
in and it's really one he comes back for, because really,
four months is not you don't have enough time when
you were so sick of things and needed to retire
(01:14:57):
for whatever reason, you have enough. That's not enough mentally recharging,
you're ready to come back when when you've been fighting
through injuries for the past five years, and you're not
mentally recharged because now I got a baby at home
and getting up in the middle of the night. That
ain't happen. Yeah, you're not rested. You're not getting those
RESTful hours. That's not happening, Grannie. He doesn't have to
go to work. And I mean some of my finest
(01:15:18):
moments when my kids were little was cradling like football's
while watching football and prepping for the show. Some great
photos where clearly it's like you weren't gonna get You
could try to pee up, kill him and punch the
baby out of my arm all you want. It wasn't
gonna happen. But you do have a very strange family.
I can I can see that happen. You can see
one of my brothers trying to pull that off. They
(01:15:41):
just come by your old stop doing that. Well, we
did have a thing when we were younger where you'd
be sitting working on homework or something, uh, and one
of us would yell alan page and completely obliterate and
blindside somebody the way. This was still the football tangled
(01:16:03):
up in chairs. Perhaps that's why we're so bruised and
battered and we weren't smart enough to get away from
the table. But for Franz with luck, it's like like
it's one off season that he goes through. Right, for him,
an off season still in contact with a lot of
his former teammates. For the Colts, they only have one
more year on the Jacoby Brissette deal, right, I mean
they always signed him to a two year deal and
(01:16:24):
they didn't sign him for major money as far as
that goes. So even if he decided tomorrow he wanted
to come back, pretty easy to walk away from, uh,
from Jacoby Brissett's deal, if you decided he wasn't the guy,
because they were great at times. Obviously you played an
awful lot without t Y Hilton. Because that's one of
the considerations going forward, is his availability on a week
to week basis is certainly something that held that offense
(01:16:49):
back right. The offensive line was fantastic, but the skill position.
Some injuries, Ebron done for the year. Injuries for Marlon
Mack had a fantastic season when he was on the field,
some to work through. But for Andrew, look, there's no
rush to get back on the field if I'm him
and let let all the young quarterbacks come out, let
the musical chairs of all the veterans happen, and pick
(01:17:11):
your spot for Twitter, and how about a fresco? Mike
has swollen down The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon. I mean, it could be another year
and then suddenly at thirty two here I am ready
to come back. Do you hear Jerry Jones? What do
you had to say today? Coming up next? I mean
the real Jerry Jones, not me impersonating Jerry Jones on Fox.
He's the Daddy. Be sure to catch live editions of
(01:17:33):
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten
pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific, Fox Sports Radio Hour three
to the show. Welcome Inside Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon. A very special night on the show tonight,
the Nick's Lose. Yeah, we have more evidence. Tom Brady
(01:17:53):
is leaving New England as a Jet fan. That really
makes you happy. We have a big time cowboy story
that involves rings and Jerry Jones. But very special day
for us here on the show. As celebrating a birthday today,
John Stamos, John s Tamos is not celebrating a birthday
(01:18:16):
all three days. He is not celebrating a birthday, justin
Frostburg celebrating a birthday today, sharing today with Elvis and
David Bowie. I think it's kind of in that order,
the order of of of that's you on the society. Elvis,
(01:18:37):
you're over Elvish, I'm the king. Alright now, Lebron's gonna
come kick your ass, completely gonna do that. He's too
busy hugging Anthony David saying, like an end of a
film going it's okay, we'll win for you, big guy.
He'll send Rich Paul after me. Hey, that's Dr Rich Paul. Alright.
(01:18:58):
Remember he's the one that died, knows to Anthony Davis,
m R. I being clean. Alright, he's doctor. Do you
remember that? That goes me Elvis Bowie all right, not
about a lot of lineup. It's like that's a pretty
good metal stand. I mean, after all, frost Bring is
charged with bringing us to the world that night to night.
The top three is pretty tough to beat. No, it is,
(01:19:19):
that's tough. I mean that. I mean there's a lot
of also ransom people have never heard of. Well, when
you get a lot of friends, I mean happy birthday
to my friends that are listening. I mean, music wise,
is there a better duo than Elvis and David Bowie?
Not the same day? No, no, no, it doesn't work
that way. That's no, that's good, that's good. Remember the King?
Yeah no, no, no, you know, I mean I thought
(01:19:39):
about taking the day off, just like they would have
a d C cam. Wow, that's a dated really DC cam.
We talked about Mr T earlier in the show. Yes
they did. You gotta If you're gonna do Mr T,
you gotta make a Rocky three reference, least something somebody
saw them from the A team. You can't go. But
at any point that Mr T talk about that they
didn't work on January in eight because it was Elvis's birthday. No,
(01:20:02):
I had to make the DC cab reference. You know
who to like that. Dann Wikey would have liked that reference.
Not you, but Frostburg carrying on the tradition of all
of us here, all of us working on our birthdays
that none of us can telling each other or giving
any milse today. You know, it wasn't too kind this
year on Wednesday, really, really Wednesday is tough. Now Wednesday,
(01:20:24):
now do you do what what happens? Like what we
do sometimes that you will celebrate your birthday on the
weekend at the smid Rhino. Yeah, that's just why I
told him I was going to bring him some glug
in some one glugg in ones. Yeah. I like that.
I like the idea. What what you need? One to
call me cheap for the spearmid Rhino. How fast, hey,
(01:20:46):
how fast you go through him is up to you.
Here I got, I got three crumpled up one one
to subs half hour later. Hey, that'll be the best
half hour your wife. No, you know who's got honestly,
you know Frostburg that's a big metal stand. You know
who's got a big metal stand is my dad. Because
(01:21:08):
my dad's birthday for he's got co Fax, Lebron, Tiger
and my dad And I was like wow, and there's
other people too, but like people you're talking like Matt
Lowers on the day, but like we don't talk about
Matt Lower anymore. But it's like it's Lebron and it's
co Fax and time you're think you'd have an athletic
gene that he would have passed on. Well, you know,
(01:21:28):
my dad was actually pretty good baseball player. That's a
pretty good softball and hockey player. So how did you
get screwed? You know, I was short, That's what happened
to me. You've seen his first stand what you're talking.
You know what happened to me? Honestly, athletically, No, no, no,
I was short, but I didn't have speed. And you
know in sports you can be slow if you're big,
and you can be short if you're fast. I wasn't fast,
(01:21:52):
So that was what really hurt me. I was really slow.
I had very stout legs, and you know, I can
hit well, I could feel well. Couldn't run. Couldn't run football,
same thing. Couldn't run. You could have been a jockey,
couldn't jockey. I graduated high school. I was five six,
(01:22:13):
five seven. I mean I wasn't always this hulking five
nine figure in front of you every day that comes
in the shadow. Was just like no. I was graduated.
I was five seven. I mean I sprouted up my
my four years at Syracuse. I'm five nine now, I'll
watch out they I was, by three quarters of them
shorter than this at eighth grade and I never grew again.
(01:22:35):
That was it. I was a giant Chicago League was
waiting for me. Come on, he's gonna be in line,
am I growing? I'm done? But Happy Birthday to Frostburg
to night see justin Frostburg Birthday show. A lot of
the music you will here tonight and have been hearing
artists who are celebrating birthday day, so a lot of Bowie,
a lot of them. Come on, you really think Tysher
knows who the hell David Bowie is? Oh I oh,
(01:22:57):
no problem, But you know who Elvis is? Right? Yeah,
he's got a burger joint out in Las Vegas, right, yes, right,
you go to Elvis's burger joint, and then Bowie's the
guy that yes, that's right, get a Bowie guitar and
the knife to the knife guy, the Bowie knife. Yeah,
he was his knives and guitars. Yes, he was also
the second pick in the draft that was taken ahead
of Michael Jordan's. So Bowie, yes, that's him too. So
(01:23:18):
that's all Bowie Ground Control to Major Tom seven six.
You know that song ends really sad, I mean really,
I mean spoiler, but but you know space added, I
mean what he goes into space and he just goes
into deep space and he's dead. I mean, that's that.
Do we know he's dead? Though? That's a tough end. Well,
(01:23:38):
they can't bring him back, could still be around. I
don't know they can bring him back like Robert Downey Jr.
Where he's just kind of dead. Like Princess Leah who
comes back in. You're saying iron Man has a potato No,
you know what movie he did? That didn't that was
I'll tell because who's who cares if I spoil this movie?
But add Astra they did that. Someone was in way
(01:24:00):
deep space like, oh, no, they're dead, they're long dead.
Oh no, look they're alive. Oh. From from the Things,
you should listen to Mark bron on his podcast just
released one with DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, and they're talking
about Once upon a Time in Hollywood and doing all
the whatever, just going back and forth on the making
the film, their their careers and everything and funny stuff.
(01:24:23):
And then he stops in the middle and goes, hey,
and Astro, what was that all about? You started laughing.
He goes, I can't explain that. And they moved on
and got back into you know, the movie at hand,
because that got buried when they sold the studio and
it was hey, we got ad Astra coming out. Good.
You know this guy's dead. He was on Neptune he
(01:24:45):
was so dead. Oh no, no he's alive. Okay, yeah,
SPACEDI doesn't end well for Major Tom. Tell him my fine,
Like what kind of shirts does he wear? They don't
even They don't answer that in the in the in
the song, what kind of shirt does he wear? Lucky?
Is is it? Is it polo? You don't wear shirts
in space? Is the us polo? I think Major Tom
did at some point. You wear a space suit, right?
(01:25:07):
But what they want to know what shirts he wore?
I think you wear shirts. It's probably wearing an Elvis
T shirt. Remember shorts. I mean, I've got my Elvis shirts.
You still have my sequence cape from being and when
I was a kid. You gotta stop wearing it into work. Yes,
it's a good look. It's a power move. People come
in and they think, oh are you here here your
(01:25:28):
character on a show that's you're coming out? Why are
you working with Silem Bob? Oh wait? Is a circus
tryouts today? I didn't know that that that that that
a little in this circuit. But while we celebrate Frostberg
and his birthday. Today was also a very revealing day
(01:25:49):
for Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys, who introduced Mike
McCarthy as their new head coach. And in the process
of doing this, Jerry Jones pretty much, let's slip what
really went on as far as the hiring of Mike
McCarthy went. And I remember Mike McCarthy's name wasn't brought
up for the Dallas Cowboys all last week. Then suddenly
(01:26:10):
Friday night we find out, dope cowboy's gonna talk to
Mike McCarthy Marvin Lewis. Saturday night, Mike McCarthy was staying
at Jerry Jones's house. Next day he had the job.
Whoa whoa, whoa, whoa whoa came together pretty fast. But
listen to Jerry Jones hell it from today, and Mike
McCarthy was always his guy. I knew Mike McCarthy before
he ever walked through these doors, and I knew it
(01:26:31):
from a lot of different directions. So that while our
time together initially talking about this job was meaningful, so
much more went into how and why he's sitting at
this table today. So this is Jerry Jones saying, I've
known Mike, Mike McCarthy. He's my guy. He's my guy.
(01:26:53):
He actually went on to tell this really weird story
about how he heard bells and Mike McCarthy's name. It's
a very he as a pope. No, it's a very
strange story in which he was he was talking about
his sister's divorce, and you know, he asked, why you're
getting divorced, and she says, I don't hear bells anymore,
I meaning the excitement of the marriage is gone. Don't
hear bells. And you know, that was how it was
(01:27:15):
at first explained to Jerry Jones when he was younger.
But he says so, but hearing bells from Mike McCarthy,
he heard bells, meaning this is a marriage that was
meant to be. Now, let's understand what Jerry Jones said,
and I'll tell you really how this how this went out.
When this whole fiasco slash drama began to play out,
(01:27:35):
Jerry Jones still had not fired Jason Garrett. Beginning of
the week after Week seventeen, Jason Garrett had a job.
Then they met every day for four days in a row.
Jason Garrett still had a job, had a job, had
a job, had a job, had a job. All the
names that had been mentioned to interview for head coaching
jobs in the NFL, like McCarthy was out there and
(01:27:57):
Matt wool was out there. All the names you had heard,
and the Cowboys still had Jason Garrett as their head coach.
There was nothing else that told you the Cowboys are
ready to make a move, ready to make a higher Which,
when that story unfolded the way it did, I told
you he's got a couple of names, their big names,
(01:28:19):
and that's what he's trying to work on, and that's
who's gonna wind up being the head coach of the
Dallas Cowboys. Because why are you if Mike McCarthy is
your guy, why are you going through a whole week
where Jason Garrett still has the job. You have not
scheduled interview with him, not anything. You're watching an interview
with the Giants. You are allowing him to talk to
other teams, talk to the Cleveland Browns. If he is
(01:28:39):
your guy and you love him this much, and you
heard bells and and I saw McCarthy when he he
stayed over wearing the Cowboys, pajamas and Myles on Saturday,
and we played pictionary until four in the morning. He
was my guy. Then I made waffles. And if he
was your guy, why would you risk losing him? He
was too shy to approach pretty girl in high school.
(01:29:00):
You think Jerry Jones is shy to approach anybody. No.
I thought it was just a funny analogy and would
give you a story of some time that there was
a girl across the home room that you just couldn't
pull it together. I'm Jerry. You must have smelled my
money coming from about a hundred and fifty yards away.
Uh So, why would you risk losing Mike McCarthy if
(01:29:21):
he is your guy? Because there was nothing about Mike McCarthy,
And then he was interviewing with the Giants on Friday,
and then suddenly Friday night it was Cowboys to interview
Mike McCarthy and Marvin Lewis. Right now, that Marvin Lewis
thing that was completely ridiculous, and that was just to
satisfy the Rooney rule. And he was never really a candidate.
But the next day McCarthy interviews, he sleeps over, he
(01:29:43):
has a job. The next day that's not how you act.
If he's your guy, you never want to worry about
losing him. I guarantee you that this is what happened.
What we said at the beginning, Jerry Jones had those
big names on his wish list, and he thought he
was gonna make happen. Whether it was urban Meyer, whether
it was Lincoln Riley, had coached uncle, whoever was, he
had it and that's what he wanted to make happen.
He found out he couldn't make it happen. For whatever reason.
(01:30:05):
Urban Meyer said no, Lincoln Riley said no, Jim Harbaugh
said no. Whatever it was, he found out he couldn't
make it happen. So suddenly they pivoted to Plan B,
which was Mike McCarthy. And I give them credit because
they got the best guy out there, with a great
resume and a guy that's developed quarterbacks. It's just a
CEO type person. They got the right guy, but there's
(01:30:26):
no way this was. Plan A was to allow Jason
Garrett to twist in the wind, keep the job for
four days, then hastily schedule the interview with Mike McCarthy,
then talked to him and give him the job. A
day and a half later. There's no way that's not
how it unfolds. If that's your guy, that's your guy.
The Panthers loved Matt Rule from the beginning, but Matt
Rule still wanted to talk to other teams, but the
(01:30:46):
Panthers never wavered. He is our guy. Early in the process,
the day after the season ended, Matt Rule is our guy.
We did not hear Mike McCarthy at all until an
entire week goes by Friday night, Jerry got no from
whoever he really wanted and then said, Okay, let's go
get McCarthy, and the power of the Dallas Cowboys made
it happen for him. But there's no way this was, Hey,
(01:31:06):
I loved you from you had me at Hello. There's
no way that was that had been folded this way. No,
And I think when we watched the way, Jason Garrett
was still going to the facility. All the assistance were
going to last Friday, so they were finally told, Hey,
don't come in on Monday. So something was hitting the
proverbial fan or thrown against the wall at that point.
(01:31:28):
But for Jason Garrett, he was gonna still pitch to
keep his job and I think you know, since he
had to the fourteen to work out the glitch, as
I so eloquently put it at the end of last week, right,
there was no reason to rush Garrett out of the
building while you were trying to make your pitch to
other coaches. Whether it was Urban Meyer, whether it was
(01:31:49):
any number of those, Lincoln Riley was the guy you wanted.
You started getting a tattoo with a Dallas star on
your leg, which was really kind of odd thinking that
was coming to Fruition. But whoever it was, it seemed
that it was all right, we're playing this over here
and we're getting a stiff harm. We might not be
getting the full no, but it's enough that we're not
(01:32:10):
kicking Jason Garrett out of here right. Otherwise you would
have moved on from the process altogether. How the Giants
let Mike McCarthy get out of the room, and who knows,
the judge could end up becoming a brilliant future star
in the coaching ranks. But McCarthy gets to Dallas and
as soon as Jerry was to that point rebuffed and
(01:32:33):
the deck chairs being filled said that's our guy. Because
Matt Rule he wasn't gonna match what Matt Rule got
from Temper, and Temper gave him the king to the
kingdom and everything else. Mike McCarthy, you want to come
here and work for me, I'll do all the press. Okay,
worked out pretty nicely. Twitter At how about a frescup?
Mike had swollen down The Jason Smith Show with my
best friend Mike Harman. I believe me, this was a
(01:32:55):
quick pivot to plan be. It worked, but there's no
way this was number one. Coming up next, why the
world is now wondering if an Instagram post from Tom
Brady means he's waving goodbye to New England. Here's a
hint he is. We'll explain why coming up next on Fox.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven
(01:33:18):
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart
Radio app Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with
My best Friend Mike Harmen, The Justin Frostburg Birthday Show,
Happy Man. Yeah, we're all gonna love you too for yourselves,
But don't send me any emails on it's not applying.
(01:33:42):
I'm a Nigerians looking for I just if you can
help me out of jail, I promise you five thousand
dollars because I have I have ten millions waiting, but
I have to get out of jail to get it.
So send me five thousand and then I'll send you
like like a million dollars if you get the email
he sent me an email he's got these Travis Rudolph gloves.
(01:34:11):
We have a crazy as story, says their sign. Guys
speaking of crazy, We have a crazy story involving Okay,
enough with okay, okay, enough, I'm talking now. And I
met Mason Rudolff's part of it too. Yeah, you're good. Uh,
we have a crazy story involving Kyle Rudolph of all
(01:34:32):
the Rudolphs, we're talking about Rudolph Neef. Well we just
got yeah, we just got bass in the Reindeer. We
just put him back in storage. Involving Kyle Rudolph and
the touchdown he scored to win the game against the
Saints last weekend. Coming up in a bit, but the
Saints get that apology letter did Yeah, Kyle Rudolph apologized
for catching the touchdown pass. Today, Tom Brady put out
(01:34:54):
a picture on Instagram and a caption in which you
can't cut this any other a but realize he is
waving goodbye to New England. He's telling everybody he has
gone and he'll be playing someplace else. In two thousand
and twenty a photo of him running onto the field
of Gillette Stadium on Instagram. And I'm not going to
(01:35:15):
read the entire post to you because it's long, but
I'm gonna hit the highlights and believe me, I'm not
leaving out anything big. I just wanted to say to
all our fans, thank you. After a few days of reflection,
I am so grateful and humbled by the unconditional support
you have shown me the past two decades. He was
on to talk about how running out of the tunnel
is a very big deal for him and having a
(01:35:35):
career he loves teammates to go to battle with is
a lot of fun and also something that he respects.
He then goes on to say, every one of us
that works at Gillette Stadium strive to to do their best,
spent themselves at a worthy cause, a right, not Patriots,
not everyone who works at Gillette Stadium. Well, he's just
(01:35:56):
trying to be inclusion the team it's the ushers, it's
the guy that's selling hot dogs, that guy that's trucking
up with beers, to about everybody who works for the Patriots.
Everybody works with the pager. That also includes other people.
You know, the guy that comes and works eight Sundays
a year, lemonade huckster. What about the ball boys that
(01:36:18):
take air out of the balls? I want to thank
the deflator. You didn't thank them. Well, they're all part
of it in a big hug, like all of those
that work at gil Ede Stadium that I'm gonna be
all you hucksters, were coming for all of you that
have tried to steal or perpetrate fraud on my name
(01:36:39):
through the years. So here's and here's how Tom Brady
finished his Instagram post. You can learn from failure, pick
yourself up with great enthusiasm, and place yourself in the
arena again. And that's right where you will find me
because I know I still have more to prove. So
that's brave. He's saying I'm coming back to play next year.
(01:37:03):
The headlines you've heard all day about the story was,
well here's Tom brad. He wouldn't say he's coming back
to the Patriots. What's he gonna do. I mean, I
don't know what else to do other than than than
staple this to your forehead if you think that this
means anything, but Tom Brady is leaving the Patriots. In
no place on this posting does he say the name
(01:37:23):
of the team. Does he say I'd like to come
back next year, but we'll see what happens. Nothing. This
is a thank you to the fans, every one of
us that works at Gillette Stadium. I'll be back in
the arena. This is a very carefully chosen Instagram post.
This is this is not Antonio Brown and guys are
get on social media and just say whatever the hell
(01:37:44):
they want to and just I don't care if it
works out for me, but not. And this is a
very carefully thought out post because this conveys the message
that Tom Brady wants you out and that is goodbye.
I am leaving. Doesn't mention the Patriots. If there was
any hint of Brady coming back wanting to come back,
there would be some kind of warmth between he Belichick
(01:38:08):
Bob Kraft. Maybe not so much from Belichick, but there'd
be a little bit of at least I'd love to
come back. We'll see what the future holds, because that's
what anybody says, well, I'd like to come back. If
you want to come back someplace, you say it, Every
athlete says it. He could even get rid of all
the controversy now surrounding him and put this story to bet,
at least for a little while, if he had just
(01:38:30):
said in his Instagram post, I love hopefully I'm playing
in front of you next year, but I don't know
what the future holds. God bless you Tom all this,
and then this story would lose some steam for a
while because the general consensus and the takeaways are well
he did say hopefully I'm playing in front of you,
meaning they have stuff to figure out, and it's the
(01:38:50):
middle of January and we have the divisional playoffs and
the conference championship and the super Bowl, so we have
time and this story goes away, which would be great
for everybody, right, Brady would like the story to go away.
The Patriots like the story to go away. All you
had to do was say that. And there's nothing wrong.
You're not painting yourself into a corner by saying helped
me back, but I don't know what the future holds,
because that's what every free agent says when they're leaving
(01:39:11):
a team. It's what Robbie Anderson says, all right, well,
I'd love to come back, but we'll see what The
feature had a lot more than that. Yeah, but this
is what every free agent says, I'd love to come back.
But Tom Brady didn't say that. Brady didn't say anything
close to that. It's goodbye Gillette Stadium, and I'll be
(01:39:34):
in the arena again. He wants everybody to know I
am leaving. And if you think this is Tom Brady
starting a power play, going all right, because if I'm
gonna stay, I need some concessions. I need more help
on offense. I need more money. Brady knows and everybody knows.
And you know he's not gonna win a power play
(01:39:54):
with Belichick and Bob Kraft. He's not gonna say I
need more money and they're gonna say, oh, you're we
should give him thirty five million. He took a discount
for us all this time. Belichick is gonna say we
paid him, we paid him. Oh he needs help. You know,
we gotta we gotta keep him Bill. If we don't
get him help on offense. He's walking out the door,
Belichick will say, I'm holding the door open for you, Tom,
We'll see you later. Brady knows he's not going to
(01:40:19):
start a war of who's got the power and leverage
with this by making it that so. It's not I'm
trying to figure out a way to get more money.
This is not I'm trying to figure out a way
to to get some concessions if I'm going to come back.
He knows that's not gonna work. This is face value.
This is him saying goodbye. This is him telling the fans.
(01:40:40):
To the fans, I want to say thank you, thank
you for all the past few years. Why are you
thanking fans? If you think you might be coming back
when you sign that contract with the Chargers or whoever
else it is, then you thank the fans. Hey, thanks
some coming. But he knows he is leaving. I mean,
this is as big a clue as you could possibly get.
When Lebron james wife Savannah put on Instagram acron the
(01:41:05):
countdown as real, we knew before anybody else Lebron James
is going back to the Cavaliers. Before all the insiders said,
why would his wife put the countdown as real and
put a picture of Acron up and then take it down. Well,
he's finishing the season with the heat and he's going
back to Acre. He goes back to Acron all the time.
Why would you need to put on Instagram the count
down as real? We knew then he was going back
(01:41:26):
to the Cavaliers. A few months later he went back
to the Cavaliers, so we could be NBA insiders. Brady's
not putting this is all the evidence you need everything
on Instagram. This tells you, Brady says, I am leaving.
There's there's nothing else out there. You can interpret this
as well. I may stay, because if you may stay,
there's no need for this yet. Well here's I think
part of it is. You know, it's brand management, right
(01:41:49):
because so at least from his angle's he's thanked the fans,
he's put up his his number four the twenty years
and given everybody a hug. But it's still business, not
really personal in a big way because if he does
the well, you know what, I want to be back,
but you know, hey, life and life happens. You know,
(01:42:09):
then it's now an adversarial thing with the Patriots. If
they decided to move on. It's everybody's gonna do it
as a business deal, right, And behind the scenes, that's
what you got when you got Belichick for that five
seconds the facade cracked and he used the term icon
I doubled, doubled up, and I was like, wait a minute,
hit the rewind on that. I want to I want
(01:42:30):
to hear that again, because he doesn't throw around accolades
except to opposing players that well, right, and Robert Kraft
recognizes as much love as he's got for Brady, there's
a business side of it, which is why he said
I hope he's here he retires. But again it's it's
each side kind of pitting each other against the other
(01:42:52):
without being so upfront about it. But but if you're
if you're coming back, if you're trying to work with
a guy to come back, you don't act very Everything
is so clinical and cold, and you would get at
least a little bit of I'd like to come back,
or I want to come back, or Bob Craft at
least saying, oh, yeah, this is predictous, Like I feel
Bob Craft is a guy caught in the middle, Like
I don't really don't want to say goodbye to time.
(01:43:13):
But I gotta listen to Bill and I hope he
comes back. But there's been none of that. There's been
none of the warmth that anybody who wants to come
back to a team, they'll figure it out. Have you
got any instance that the three of them they're gonna
figure it out and Brady's gonna come back? None of it.
Before it's all said and done, the only guy left
might be Robert Kraft in the woods and away you
(01:43:36):
go here, there's there's lots of stuff that could happen.
None of none of this, None of this gives me
one shred of I'm staying. And when you say so,
when you say goodbye, when you want to thank you
do it knowing full well this is it. I'm gone
right When When when do people take out the full
page ads when they sign a contract with a new term.
(01:43:57):
I feel, hey, thanks, it was a great run. But
here's a old page ad in the Houston Chronicle or
in the l A Times. Thanks for everything. You say
this when you are done. Tom Brady doesn't have to
say goodbye to the fans right now. It doesn't have
to do it, have to thank them for when you
leave is when you do it. This is Tom Brady said, Hey, listen,
I don't wan anybody under these under any kind of
a false uh circumstances. We I'm leaving, Okay, I'm leaving,
(01:44:20):
and and I know this now. So when I signed
with the charges, wherever it winds up being, it's not
that much for a shock to you. I thank you
did all these things, but follow my clues. I'm telling
you I'm going. Brady just doesn't want to be the
bad guy. Nobody wants to be the bad guy. Because
if Brady just comes out and says, blank you, I'm gone,
then he gets revolt from fans. As the nicest way
(01:44:43):
to right to say I'm saying goodbye. This is this
is him saying I'm gone, and I want to be
a good guy. Don't anybody be mad at me? And
the same thing with Crash, same thing with Belichick. But
people are gonna wind up being blamed. But Bradys don't
blame me. I'm not gonna just come out and have
a press conference say I'm gone, blank you, Bill. But
I'm telling you all, hey, I'm leaving, but don't hate me.
(01:45:05):
I think he's still gonna be there. To torment you
next year. But we'll get into that. We'll love more
on that coming up at first. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike harmon
weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific. I really
like the reference that Wicky made earlier, kind of describing
how he was leaving the arena in the Costanza timeless
(01:45:27):
at Art of Seduction poes So Costanza shirtless in the
boxers and black socks on a bear skin rob and
now you gotta explain to millennials who Costanza Yeah, well, well,
well no, I don't know, because does very well replay. Yeah,
it does better ratings than almost anything, but the NFL.
You would think, you know, just you would think if
(01:45:48):
you plopped someone down from another planet said hey, what
do you think about the Seinfeld Show and they give
you a pity and say, how long do you think
it's been off the Air Force? And now it's this
indication people would say, I don't know, a couple of years, three,
three years, five years, all right, it's been It's been
almost been twenty years since Sidefeld was on the year
first run and people still talk about it like it's
(01:46:11):
on right, now. I mean it's amazing people talk about
side for twenty years. A lot of one liners that
slips through the David magic and a lot of episodes
that could not be made today. Uh yeah, a few
of them, yeah, which is kind of amazing that they
still show them in syndication at times. Well, a couple
of scenes and jokes from like really that one stays
in keeping cigar on? Yeah? Oh sure, sure, the butter shave, Yeah,
(01:46:34):
it's love. Can't have people living in your drawers? No,
and swing Adam with an axe? Tippy toe, tippy toe,
tippy toe, twitter at how about a fresco Mike has
swollen on The Jason Smith Show. If you like that. Actually,
my best friend Mike Harmon. I want more on Tom
Brady coming up in twenty minutes week well, because I'll
tell you why not only he's gonna be gone from England,
(01:46:55):
but why he has to go? But coming up next
and absolutely insane story coming off of the biggest play
of the weekend in the NFL. This is Fox Sports Radio.
But what if Robert Kraft massages the situation? Oh I
see what you did there, Frostburg Gig Gig, be sure
to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with
(01:47:15):

you know eventually we're gonna play the national title game.
The end of the playoffs is not Valentine's Day, Valentine's Day.
(01:48:22):
Valentine's Day art shaped chocolates will get some fun do going.
It'll be fantastic. Help commemorate the end of the college
football season. We've got a big one, uh and we
have another college football one next week as well, involving
what could be the best player in the history of

But again two right now, Batman, we got Sloven's. Are

and Insane story out of the National Football League involving
this play, the biggest play from this past weekend, third
and goal from the floor, Kirk takes the snow. We'll
(01:49:26):
try fade left hand zone. Nd it is caught. The
Minnesota Vikings have beaten the New Orleans Saints twenty six,
twenty and over time, and this game indeed was a
San Francisco treat. So there it is Paul Allen, Vikings
(01:49:48):
Radio Network. But before we get to the game, let's
go back to the celebration. In the locker room for
the Vikings, Kyle Rudolph, who caught the touchdown, was approached.
I am a member of the media, as he says,
it's not somebody that covered the team every day, and
it's not a national personality. But a member of the
media approached him really quickly and said, hey, dude, can
(01:50:10):
I have your gloves? I'm gonna sell them for charity,
And Kyle Rudolph, being a really good guy, said and
far too trusting, said yes, I'll even sign him for you,
signs the gloves, gives them to the guy. Hey, we're
gonna make money for charity. It is then revealed earlier
today that these gloves were subsequently put on eBay and
(01:50:31):
sold to the highest bidder. Jason King, I mean not
the guy I used to play soft with Jason King
at different Jason King's college basketball writer. I believe there
is has a lot of Jason King's But Jason was
good left, he can hit. He was really power. Yeah.
Lifelong Vikings fan, Jason King is a member of a
Minnesota Vikings game used issued memorabilia group on Facebook. Apparently
(01:50:54):
those things exist, and when the Gloves came up, he's
an avid collector of sports memor rebellion. He was able
to verify the gloves authenticity by matching a thread hanging
from the left middle finger to a photo taken by
Getty images of Rudolph spiking the ball after his touchdowns. Okay,
rip on the middle finger upon little finger, I'm gonna
(01:51:15):
bid on this. Had to find some identifying mark. Now
me looking at the item, I've seen Rudolph's signature enough
trading guards or whatever that I would have thought it
passed there as well. But yes, the thread next level
nowhere in the message exchange that Jason King, the winning
bidder who only was able to bid seventy five bucks
(01:51:35):
to get it three shipping insane that that's but hey,
this is people saying, are these really the game warn gloves?
Are they really the game war. That's the guy looking
to make a very quick bum, right If if they
wanted to go through proper channels and get the authentication
and everything else, then you've got a whole other level
(01:51:56):
of scrutiny. For one, you're gonna get a higher price,
but there's probably gonna be some gonsop. But why make
a quick buck if it's for charity, right exactly. So
that's my point is that you know the guy was
a frount all the way around. Jason King messages the account.
The seller says I got the gloves directly from Rudolph.
Nowhere in the exchange or on the post doesn't say
anything about, hey, money is gonna be donated to charity. Yeah,
(01:52:18):
here's the listing vikings Kyle Rudolph playoff game use Glove
versus Saints. No, nothing for charity, none of it. Two
or three lines comes with you know, signed my Rudolph
and Black Sharpie comes with a an official team roster.
It's a little thing. If it's for charity, you keep
it up for a week or two. Of course, you
know why why am I doing it so fast? Right?
(01:52:38):
But obviously this is a special person that says I'm
gonna say this, get convinced Rudolph it's for charity, and
then try to make money on it. After King buys
the gloves today he sees what's going on online contacts
Kyle Rudolph says, I have the gloves. He's actually going
to give them to the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital,
where Kyle Rudolph does a lot of charity do able
(01:53:00):
work over the course of his career with the Vikings.
So now the gloves are gonna go on display and
the money is gonna go to charity that just Jason
King used and Kyle Rudolph said, dude, you're awesome. I
will send you a autograph pair of my gloves from
this coming weekend's game that we're playing as a show
of thanks. So in the end this worked out pretty well.
(01:53:20):
The gloves are gonna go on display, that money there's
gonna go to charity. The guy that bought the gloves said, hey, dude,
I had no idea about this. Kyle Rudolph has taking
care of him. But man, the two biggest things are
you gotta be some kind of special to to to
pull that kind of scam, And secondly, I don't know.
Why is Kyle Rudolph giving those gloves to somebody he
doesn't know. I would I don't give the gloves of
(01:53:43):
somebody if I don't know them. But here's the thing. Charity.
Yes you're here, you know, but I call a PR
guy over and go, hey, come here, Hey, Dennis, come
on over. Hey, this guy is gonna do this for charity.
Can we do something here? You gotta do something like that.
But that's the thing, though, if the guy knows enough
and has done the research in the moment, you know,
you're excited and and that's the kind of thing you do.
He does you know something called Kyle Rudolph's end zone
(01:54:05):
that at the Masonic Children's Hospital. And if you know
enough of that information and you sell it, well, right,
you're a credentialed member of the media. As far as
no no, Obviously that that all goes aside and they'll
be cameras. But they figured out when Mike Schuman stole
the jacket. They figured out when the guy took Tom
(01:54:25):
Brady's jersey, they'll they'll fight. Hey, that's my jacket, Mike Shuman.
All back to four years ago. Wait, my favorite moment
on the show. Ever, that's one of the highlights. Yeah,
so they'll figure this guy can see blink in the
locker room. But I but yeah, but I still am
not going to give it to guy. I don't know
that this is gonna come. Yeah. I mean, I get
you're excited, you're happy as out. We want, dude, take this,
(01:54:47):
take my jockstrap, take this take off, you know, But
I still wouldn't wouldn't wouldn't give it to someone. Nor
would I. But you know, trusting guy, and well you
and I are more skeptical hateful people. I guess when
it comes down to Twitter found a good guy and
picked on him. That's right, Twitter, and aw about a fresco.
Mike had swollen home. We had a great ending to this,
(01:55:08):
and that's what's important coming up next, not only why
Tom Brady is going to leave the Patriots, but why
he needs to go. It's next on Fox. Be sure
to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific.
Oh oh, oh, you did it. It's the Justin Frostburg
(01:55:31):
slide Over Baby, our birthday edition of the What Are
You Gonna Do? Special? For him. I'm not gonna do anything. Whoa, whoa.
I just lobbed it up on it. I was going,
I was I I was going to say, I hope
he had great plans an hour from now, because you know,
(01:55:53):
coming to work on your birthday is pretty cool. Look,
you and I both worked on our birthday, tysher. What's
your birthday, August? I hear you're gonna say it's today
as well. No, I take it off every year. Okay, alright,
you know, because you're in your twenties exactly, you're not
great enough to make the cut of the eighth. What
eight is eight? No, the eighth is Elvis and Bowie
(01:56:14):
and Frostburg. You just went third person. I did like that.
That was good. You almost kind of went in my
New York. Hey, it's Elvis, and it's Bowie and it's
Frostburg and who wants again with Frostburg and has two thumbs?
This guy? Well done, dice Clay. Oh wait, awful lot
(01:56:35):
of Andrew dice Clay to start read, I think my
birthday has more star stutted lineups than Justin's. Though your
birthday your fake news. Bowie really, I've never heard of him.
Wait wait, August is your birthday? You do have? You
(01:56:57):
also have Billy Ray Cyrus. Keep it going, Tim Burton.
What else we got? Yeah, that's a lot of party
in the back, dude, Come on, dude, I had to
stop with he didn't create Miley though, gave yeah his
Minley Race Irus's dad. You're right, Blake Lively, I'm good.
China mcclein, one of all Harmies actresses that's also has
a birthday of that China. China McClean, she's descendance, not China,
(01:57:19):
not that China. China's done. I know Rachel down the
street from me to buddy Rachel Ray, Gene Simmons. All people,
are we really doing this? Girl? This one's bleeping born
on the Eighth's right? This story? All people ty shirt
has no idea who they are born on his birthday?
None of them A sizes Blake Lively. That's it, Okay,
(01:57:40):
all right, that's you wouldn't know what to do with
Blake Lively. Call me back, you know, Blake. Here's the thing.
How about you and I go out over baby, go
back to my place, and I show you how I
get the keen wa into the burger. Why don't we
spice it up to nine. It's not even cheese. It's
a cheese substance. It's actually made out of asparagus. Cash.
(01:58:03):
She's like, cheese whatever, tequila. Nice getting seduced by Alex Titscher.
You would be so lucky. Here's some asparagainst baby. You know,
it turns your pa yellow. Whoa, whoa, whoa really yellow?
(01:58:26):
All right, thanks, I'm leaving, I'm leaving. I don't know
I ever heard the yellow part. Yeah, yeah, it gets
it gets like really that's when you're dehydrated. No, no, no, no,
it turns. It smells and it turns. It turns like
a bright yellow, not really hydrated. Here's the thing, though, Jason,
(01:58:48):
is that a better setup or is it Mike Harmon's
that is right. Oh, that's a pretty good set. That's
a good one, because that that surprises you. You walk
into a room, it's really quiet, sexy music playing. Hey Blake,
he had good run Blake. Lively turns around and says, hey,
Mike Harmon, what are you thinking? Are you thinking about
(01:59:10):
doing something wrong? And Harmon goes right because it would
be and then out the window the windows locked. But yeah,
happy birthday, Happy birthday to Frostburg today again Elvis Bowie
Frostberg and playing a lot of Elvis and Bowie music
(01:59:31):
on the show tonight, even though Alex has no idea
who they are now, he has no idea. No, Yeah,
one guy makes guitars and then the other guy has
like a hot dog joint in Vegas right right in
the night. Don't forget the Bowie knife. Oh that's always
slips my mind. And the guy that got drafted before
Jordan's same guys. I mean, millennials think Lebron is the
king and they don't know Elvis. Didn't one of them
go to space, wasn't it Bowie? Yes? He did? Did he?
(01:59:53):
He wound up staying in space? Did he really lived
in space for most of his life? He's still there?
I don't know. I mean, t J. There is life
on Mars, apparently for David Bowie loving the alien. But
at one point in the world he was the greatest,
biggest musician. At one point I was sure he was.
But well, I mean, look, Elvis had a decade plus
(02:00:14):
two through the end of his run. I mean he's
still going somewhere. You think TV mean frightening if you
believe the nineteen seven death. I saw him on the
strip last year exactly see lives on in our hearts,
no question about it. And then David Bowie had released
a fantastic album before his passing as well, Black Star Right.
(02:00:38):
That was got it? So today Frostburg's birthday seven shut up?
But Tom Brady putting out his Instagram post earlier today
thanking the fans for their support over the course of
his career. Look, we we've talked about it a lot
tonight that this is the final piece of evidence you
(02:00:58):
need that Brady is leaving. He doesn't mention the Patriots.
He talks about employees working hard at you Lett Stadium.
He talks about being in the arena next year, not
playing for the Patriots. Very easy for Brady to have said,
I hopefully I can play in front of you next year,
but I don't know what the future holds. It was
very easy to do that. He didn't because he's telling
(02:01:21):
everybody I am leaving. It's not a power play, because
Brady is not gonna win a power play with Belichick
and Craft for resources or more money. He knows this
is face value. This is Brady saying goodbye. But let's
take the conversation a different direction. Not only does Tom
Brady is he leaving, but he has to go. Brady
wants to still be Tom Brady. He wants to still
(02:01:44):
be that icon, and he's got to prove that he
can still do it, whether he can win without Belichick
and Craft, whether he can still win at a high level,
because obviously the doubters are out after this year. It's
not like Brady played all full but he didn't play
to the normal Tom Brady standards. And yeah, when you're
forty three, you start slowing down. Brady needs to stay
(02:02:08):
Tom Brady. He's not gonna be that guy in New
England because New England's not gonna go out and say,
here's a four year contract, Tom for all kinds of money.
We're gonna continue to build around you and get you
the offensive help that you need. Belichick has been ready
to turn the page for three years on Brady, and
there's no way that now, coming off of this year
where the Patriots couldn't score and the defense kept them
(02:02:31):
afloat the entire year, that they're gonna decide, Okay, let's
go out and get three wide receivers and a couple
of running backs and give Tom Brady the weapons he needs.
There were no weapons. They tried Antonio Brown, they had
to let him go after a week. There was nothing
after that, nothing to try to get tom Brady more success.
They didn't bring in more running backs, didn't bring him
(02:02:51):
They drafted a wide receiver who was hurt. Didn't do it.
There was no creativity. There was no signs that we're
gonna do what we can to make our off and
is great. They kind of let the offense be what
it was. They never tried to solve their problems all
year long. If Brady comes back to New England, that's
the way it's going to be. BELTI keeps drafting defensive
players and and and that's where he's gonna keep building
(02:03:13):
the team. He's not gonna give Tom Brady a bunch
of weapons. So if Brady comes back to New England
next year, it's gonna be worse than it was this year.
And then it's gonna be boy, tom Brady's really done.
Then he's got to retire. Brady has to go somewhere
where he can still be Tom Brady. And that's a
team that has weapons, that is going to have a
general manager that's gonna say, hey, dude, what do you need.
(02:03:36):
We'll draft four wide receivers for you, We'll draft three
running backs, We'll sign whoever you want to. We'll give
you the money you want, We'll give you everything. Whatever
you want, we'll do for you. Man. We're happy y're here.
And Brady is gonna sign a four year deal and
it's going to be the extension of his career because
now he's gonna be able to rely on playmakers to
do a little bit more, whereas he relied on himself
(02:03:58):
for the better part of the last fifteen years up
until last year, maybe the end of last year, the
Super Bowl and on. But now he needs players that
can that can give him a little bit of health
and go up and get the ball, that can make
a play when Brady throws it up on a fifty
fifty play or whatever the situation is. He needs weapons
that can now elevate him. And that's why he's got
(02:04:18):
to go someplace else because another team will give that. Damn.
Other teams that need quarterbacks have better weapons than the
Patriots have, and the Patriots aren't going to give it
to him. So now he's got to go someplace where
they have them so we can have a Peyton Manning
like end to his career where hey, here's a year
he throws her forty five touchdowns because he's got the
guys there. He's got the wide receivers he needs. He's
got Keenan Allen. He's got Austin Neckla out of the backfield.
(02:04:41):
He's got Mike Williams. He's got everybody he needs. He's
got John Jefferson. He's got Charlie Joyner. He's got James Lofton.
He's got Gary Anderson, not the kicker of the other
Gary Anderson. He's got everybody he needs. You left out,
Antonio Gates. I missed it. I did got to bring
him this. Yeah, I think we leave that one behind.
This is why Brady's gotta go to stay Tom Brady.
(02:05:03):
He needs to change locations. Yeah, I think there's a
lot that would need to be overhauled. Is it impossible? No?
Is it improbable? Sure? Uh. In the end, Bill Belichick
might be the last man standing there. Hell, maybe he
decides he wants to leave too, because the ink isn't
really dry on some of these contracts that are that
are being signed now right or being discussed and bandied about, Yeah, McDaniels,
(02:05:28):
that could still leave for Cleveland. So maybe he and
Tom Brady are a nice package. They've got a bunch
of weapons, uh in Cleveland, and they can get away
from the how do you how do you fix Baker Mayfield?
You you get him out of the situation? Uh is
potentially part of it as well. We've heard the Colts. Obviously,
we've talked a lot about the Chargers. You just went
(02:05:49):
down the laundry list of guys that are still there
at least for one more run. So when we look
at it, it'd be a difficult overhaul for that roster.
A couple of defensive players making some good money, a
couple of other guys that are coming up for free agency,
so you probably lose one or two of your starting
eleven as it goes. You've got to rebuild the offensive line,
(02:06:10):
find wide receivers, and you know, it's just it becomes
the question for Tom Brady of of what is the
end of what's the picture of the end of the
career right other than being in the arena because that's
when he gave us and obviously you want to rise
from failure and whatever else in New England. You'd love
to do it where you did your last twenty years,
(02:06:32):
But what does that mean? What? What assets can you
bring on? Because they're happy to trade picks, happy to
give up whatever you need. But do you have enough
currency to go get one or two big names in
the receiving core to help things? Can you coax Gronkowski
back out of broadcasting? Right? He's at a year now, Right,
(02:06:53):
if we were talking about Andrew Luck a little bit earlier,
like Gronks legitimately, now what at ten months since he
last played football? Maybe the body starts feeling better when
you start getting towards towards draft season and those evaluations
that maybe you can coax him out for one last
run and say let's saddle up and ride eighties seven
(02:07:13):
one more time or that. But is that going to
be enough? But I mean that's one piece, right, It's
it's certainly more than he had. And they took their shots, right,
they traded for Mohabitsanu, he of the tween receiving yards.
I thought it would be a better move. Veteran guy
that when he was in Cincinnati was overshadowed. When he
(02:07:35):
was in Atlanta, was solid when he needed to pick
up at times, and then he was a non factor
here trying to pick up the offense and just never
really got there. You look at Edelman banged up over
the course of the year. You have Antonio Brown touchdown
in the one week he was there. Couldn't stick around
Josh Gordon. They waited forever on him. There was a
(02:07:57):
lot of trust in Josh Gordon. And then when he
got there and was part of the squad, made a
couple of plays, but once again, I couldn't trust it,
and certainly I would guess had wind that he was
going down and then suspending. And that's the Patriots thing.
The Patriots didn't try to go out and say, you
(02:08:18):
know what Tom Brady needs to Let's go out and
get a wide receiver to pair with Edelman, will give
him uh four year, fifty million dollar contracts. Let's get
Josh Gordon on the cheap because he keeps coming back.
Let's get Antonio Brown on the cheap because he's available.
That that's what the Patriots done. Okay, we need a
little band aid here. But they didn't not once today
(02:08:38):
say all right, we're gonna go out and get these
guys big bandage until he did. He was there for
a week, but he was free. But he was free.
He was free. But you didn't have to investigate. You
didn't have to invest investigate, didn't have definitely have to investigate.
You have to investig. Yeah, there is investigation. You've investigated
(02:09:01):
that that new music video all night on your birthday
for you didn't have to invest draft capital good. You
don't have to spend anything to say, let me shop
in the bargain bin. And that's all the Patriots have
done for offensive help. Let's shop in the bargain bin.
And look look what we've done. Okay, but they're not
nearly going to give Brady enough. So if he goes back,
he knows what next year is gonna be. It'll be
(02:09:23):
worse than this. So I gotta go someplace else. Somebody
else will help me and I can have that. Really,
he wants the Peyton Manning end to his career, where
I can go someplace for four years, win a Super Bowl,
maybe playing a couple, and they have great weapons, and
I can still be Tom Brady and I can have
a great year of forty five touchdowns to say, blank,
you Bill, blank you craft. Look how good I still am?
(02:09:45):
I mean that's what he wants. I would love nothing
more than to go to Sophi many Sundays this coming
year and watch number twelve trot out onto the field
throwing it up to Mike Williams and your man Keenan
Allen Twitter at how about a fresco Mike and Swollen
done The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon.
I will have more on this story because you wouldn't
believe who people on social media are saying will end
(02:10:08):
up succeeding Tom Brady in New England. But coming up next,
it's great news today for the Lakers, and straight ahead,
we'll solve the biggest problem they have. It ain't a
d S, but it's next on Fox. Be sure to
catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike
Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven pm Pacific on
(02:10:28):
Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app Fox
Sports Radio. The Jason Smith Show with My best friend
Mike Harmen live from the Geico Studios. And there is
great news for the Lakers today, bad news for the
rest of the NBA. Anthony Davis is okay after suffering
(02:10:50):
a sacral contusion last night. Well, I mean I wasn't
really worried because anybody that had ever been affiliated with
the Lakers took the social media as quickly as they could,
as if it was a chain call. Hey, practice has
been moved a half hour today, called Billy right, He's
next on the list, and then you go all the
way through. That's exactly what happened last night. Before we
(02:11:12):
get out of here, I think everybody had checked in
except for Magic because he was on a yacht somewhere.
Uh well, there was nothing to take credit for. That's why.
If there was something for Magic to take credit for,
he would have done that, But but he wasn't. The
Healing of eight Anthony Davis's sacral can do healing. Well,
the Healing of Anthony Davis sounds like an HBO seven
(02:11:34):
part mini series, The Healing of Anthony Davis. Uh so,
the companion to the Exorcism of Emily Row. That's right,
exactly here you go, or wrestling Ernest Hemingway, or searching
for Bobby Fisher, or searching for Bobby Fisher while wrestling
Ernest Hemingway, or leaving Las Vegas. Okay, so Anthony Davis
(02:11:54):
gets tangled up with Julius Randall last night, and actually
things are actually worse for Julius Randall and Anthony Davis.
They get tangled up as Randall goes to the rack
last night and Anthony Davis falls, lands on his tailbone,
leaves the game and in five long minutes for the Lakers.
And more than that, what are we gonna do if
(02:12:15):
Anthony Davis is hurt and out a long time? Things
turned out worse for Julius Randle because apparently after the
game last night he was so distraught after the after
the loss, he didn't travel with the team. You know,
the Knicks got thumped by the Jazz tonight and he
wasn't there. So now you're wondering what's going on with
Julius Randall. But for Anthony Davis, things are okay, as
(02:12:36):
reports have him traveling with the Lakers on their road
trip upcoming two game road trip. They don't play again
until Friday, and X rays were negative. Now, first Dr
Rich Paul told us this last night that the X
rays were negative, But the MRI I negative today and
a d is all right, does he play Friday night?
You know that really doesn't matter the fact that he's
on the road trip means he's okay. They wouldn't risk
(02:12:59):
having him out on the road trip if if they
needed him to stay home and sit and rest. So
I don't know if he can sit, but they if
he couldn't play the exactly sir and get back to
your don't you know who I am? So a D
is back. What this hopefully does is this jump starts
the Lakers into what they need to do in order
(02:13:20):
to be a title contending team. Because right now, we
talked about it last night, they're a regular season dominant
team right between Lebron and a D. When it's one
game out of a D two, it's hard to beat them.
If we watched Lebron do this in the Eastern Conference
for years, him and a bunch of stiffs on Cleveland
were able to get the number one seed every year because, hey,
when you're playing Lebron one out of a D two, Hey,
(02:13:42):
he's gonna go for a triple double. He's gonna beat
this all by himself. Alright, we're ready for the next
game because we're playing the Knicks and we're gonna kill them.
But in the playoffs it's tougher. You need to be deep, deep,
You don't win a championship now unless you have a
deep roster and you have players who can contribute. Look
at the Warriors last year. Suddenly they're deep bench that
they had during their whole run. Because look, all the
stars get a lot of credit, rightfully, so k D
(02:14:05):
and Curry and Draymond and Clay Thompson. But when were
they dominant when they had a great bench, when they
could bring off Iguadala and Sean Livingston and all these
guys who were able to come out and play great.
And boy, their second unit is putting points up on
the board. They didn't have it last year. So what happened?
They got thumped by the Raptors in the finals because
the Raptors had a good bench that was deep. The
(02:14:29):
Lakers are two players deep, Lebron and a d and
there are great two players, and that's enough to be
at the top of the now. Sorry, future All Star
Alex Caruso as well is also great. And they've gotten
great contributions at times from any number of players. Danny
Green has had some fantastic games, but I'm for the year.
(02:14:50):
He's averaging eight point eight points per game. Kyle Kuzma
now subject all these trade rumors, perhaps because of the
trainer thing, and then some at eleven point eight. He's
your number three, right. He was supposed to be part
of the Big three. He was the last man standing,
maybe because nobody wanted him, but he was the last
guy standing. He was supposed to be the chosen one.
(02:15:12):
And now you're trying to figure out how it works well.
And and this is where I can fix the Lakers
and fix their problems very easily. Is that, Yes, you
have a nice piece in Danny Green, Avery Bradley is
good once in a while. These are all players that
that can Dwight Howard can contribute in his way. But
the Lakers are missing firepower, they're missing shooters, they're missing
(02:15:33):
guys that can fill it up because there's no one
you can rely on to say, Okay, here's our number
three score. You thought it was gonna be Kyle Kuzma,
but it hasn't been. The Lakers are if they're focusing
on trading Kyle Kuzma, I'll tell you that's the wrong
thing because you're not gonna get a lot for Kyle
Kuzma because his stock is extremely low. Last year, middle
baby point of the season, boy Kuzma was at he
(02:15:54):
was scoring thirty points in a game and Lebron was
feeding him and they had great chemistry at his point.
Look at Kyle kuz But you're not gonna trade Kyle
Kuzma and solve your issues because you need to maybe
three guys off the bench who can score or in
supporting roles that can score. You're not gonna bring that
back with Kyle Kuzma. Right, You're gonna exchange Kyle Kuzma
(02:16:15):
for somebody else that has as much question marks what
the Lakers need to do, and this is gonna solve
all their problems. One dimensional scorers are very cheap. They're
very easy to go get at the deadline, whether it's
a JJ Reddick or somebody else. The Lakers don't have
a lot of assets to trade another first round pick
to trade again until so, but when you can go
(02:16:38):
out at the deadline and get shooters that you can
give contract relief to for a team that, look, we
want to get this guy off. Okay, fine, but you
can go out and get those guys. The one dimensional
scores pretty cheap because you have the other players who
can play their roles and give you what they need,
whether it's Danny Green or Dwight Howard or Avery Bradley,
but you need guys that can fill it up. And
(02:16:59):
you need three guys because you can't just you can't expect, hey,
we're gonna bring in one guy, it's gonna work. Look
the Clippers, they thought, hey, we're great with Lou Williams,
Nolan Montrez, Harrall. Oh my goodness, look how deadly they are.
The Lakers need three guys that you can count on
for some kind of points where every night one of
them is gonna give you fifteen to twenty points. That's
what you have to have. That's why you can't just
(02:17:19):
get one guy, because one guy is not gonna do
it for you every night. But you need guys can
go put points on the board because when you get
to the playoffs and points are more at a premium,
and teams are playing defense much more, much tougher than
they are during the regular season. Suddenly the Lakers are
gonna go, how can we score? They're shutting down Lebron,
they're stopping Anthony Davis, were we're losing games ninety No,
(02:17:40):
you need those scores that can juice things up and
grease the skids. That's what the Lakers need to do.
Focus on the cheap score, one dimensional scores because you
don't have assets to trade anyway. Go get those guys.
That's an NBA champions Yeah, I like your shooting theory.
I also need a guy that can distribute that whose
name isn't Lebron, right, a guy that can get his
own shot, but a guy that could make plays. I'll
(02:18:04):
tell you he'd probably be a better distribute at this
point than a lot of the guys they have on
that roster. Right. We like Alex Cruz, He's a one
point seven assist per game guy. Sit in somebody's face, right,
how long you'ven gonna deal with him any longer? Right?
KCP and whatever else you got, all these guys, you
don't have anybody that helps to make other guys better
(02:18:27):
in their shot selection and shots spacing either, So that
that's the other area of need. And as we get
into January, now is the time to start doing that evaluation.
There's advanced scouting, you know, go to the press box
and take the videos that you need because you need
to make these moves ahead of other contenders too. Because
the Clippers, right, down the hallway, are gonna be looking
(02:18:48):
for the same type of assets to keep rolling and
fortifying their bench as you go to so them Dallas
has been a ahead of schedule. Maybe maybe they go
when they want to buy another asset to make a
playoff run and just keep going on down the line.
So it becomes a much more difficult proposition if you
wait on it towards the deadline, towards the All Star break.
(02:19:11):
Time to act is now and Lebron potentially wanting Kuzma
out off of the trainer comments and his response doesn't
help matters because it's not gonna help his trade stock,
which already, as we talked to Dan Woiki of the
l A Times a little bit earlier, might not have
been at all that high to begin with. Well, and
(02:19:32):
you know, and and the thing is is that if
this was Magic Johnson running things, I would say, oh,
I don't know, but Polinka has at least pull the
trigger and made the trade for Anthony Davis. Magic couldn't
do it. Last year. During the season, Polinka found a
way to get it. The Magic kept thinking everybody just
wanted to walk through the doors and that everybody was
gonna kiss their ask just how bad Magic Johnson was.
(02:19:55):
At least you give Polinka credit for all right, he
was able to get the deal done when Age Johnson
couldn't get it done. So that at least buoys me that,
all right, he can figure things out salary cap wise
and get everything goes. Hey, you know we can afford
to do X and Y for JJ Reddick you know,
or whoever it is, and and we we can. I
keep saying J J Reddick, like I want to make
it JJ, you know, So I at least him confident
(02:20:17):
that he's pulled down a big trade that the Lakers
absolutely had to have or everybody was going to be fired.
So I gotta think he can get the couple of
shooters they need. Just ask Lebron we wants to go
out and get him. Is JJ Reddick on your mind
a lot? Because he had that podcast with Zion Williamson? Uh? Well,
is that the thing that's in your mind where Zion
said I wanted to go back to Duke and they
told me I couldn't come. You know, quite honestly, JJ
(02:20:40):
Reddick is my cousin's favorite basketball player of all time?
Is that right? If she couldn't marry anybody in the world.
She would marry j J because she blind love JJ
red She's about as tall as he is to my
cousin's tall. She's like six two six three. Loves JJ Reddick,
loves Duke for JJ Reddick has been a big Duke
fan her whole life. Always gives me crap dude beat series, Like,
(02:21:01):
you don't even go there. You went to Ohio Northern University.
Get off, but you know, yeah, you know JJ. Yeah,
you don't get j That's not the way it works.
Tattoos loved it, well, you know what, she liked him
pre tattoos. I think she likes him a little bit
less with the more tattoos now. But he wasn't wor
with them. No, no, no, apparently you have to get them.
That would be one hell of a mole pad. It's
(02:21:22):
not like because like Jason mcmuller, I was that he
was born with him right in an aquaman. Was he
born with the tattoos? Yeah? Trying to wears T shirts
to award shows. He's my hero, Tank top, Twitter and
Out out of Fresco. Mike and Swollendom coming up next.
A star quarterback is not coming back to the NFL now,
but that doesn't mean he's not coming back at all.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
(02:21:43):
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific. Former NFL quarterback, dad of Andrew Luck, and
commissioner and CEO of the XFL, which gets ready to
play in a few days. Well, they're all jacked up
because they got their crazy rules that everybody's talking about players.
I've seen a number of profiles for Cardel Jones my
(02:22:04):
timeline again. Hey, Eric Dungee, former Syricus quarterback, he's playing
in the jacked up are you? I don't know if
he's actually gonna play, but he's gonna be in the league.
You're still excited by just mention of his name. Oliver
Luck did an interview on CBS Sports Radio earlier today
and said that he has not seen the itch for
Andrew Luck to return to the National Football He just
(02:22:26):
had his first kid about six weeks ago and he's happy,
but has not seen Andrew Luck with the impetus saying
I'm ready to get back to the NFL. He used
the word hankering. Hankering, which is a fantastic word at
t J Hankering, Hank Aaron had and I've been on
record and I've said Andrew Luck is gonna come back
because a guy that's played football his whole life but
(02:22:48):
has been dogged by injuries. What do we see from
players when that happens, When they get that clean bill
of health, they want to go back for unfinished business.
And I am not surprised at all that Andrew Luck
is not ready to come back to the NFL. He
only retired four months ago. He didn't retire in January, right,
Remember this isn't training camp. When he decided he tried
(02:23:10):
to come back, tried to come back, tried to come back.
He was still too banged up. You know what, I'm sorry,
I'm retiring. Four months is not enough to for him
to heal enough to miss football to come back, especially
when you consider he had a baby in the middle
of it. He had his first kid in the middle
of it. So the last couple of months, his wife
is seven months pregnant. Then he has a kid. He's
been taking care of his his his baby for the
(02:23:32):
last six weeks. He hasn't had time to miss the NFL.
Has that time to get percent healthy yet because it's
only been four months. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised
if his comeback isn't until one because you got all
the way through another year. Then you're talking about a
year and a half away and then, hey, you know what,
I feel good. I'm throwing the ball. Well, I have
(02:23:54):
the get back. I'm thirty one years old. It's not
like I I don't have another five really good years
in me. As long as I stay healthy, I want
to play in the NFL again. And already people are
filling my timeline with book it. Andrew Luck to the Patriots,
seen that a bunch and on quite as photoshop as
Brady to the Bears or some of the other gems
(02:24:16):
you've seen. But Andrew Luck could conceivably get the itch
to come back in the spring. This is what happens
for players in the spring. They've been away for a while.
I'm feeling good. The draft is here, and now you
know what, I'm thinking, I can get out and play
football again. But that's when it happens. It's only been
a short amount of time for Andrew Luck to be
(02:24:36):
away from the game, and plus it's the end of
the football season. And if you're not playing at the
end of a football season, your body and your mind
is conditioned to say, you know what, I'm ready for
time off. So hey, the teams that are playing now,
this is this is all you are possibly talking about
going on in your life, whether you're having a new
baby or not. But if you're at the beginning of
(02:24:58):
January and you're not playing the playoffs, what are you doing.
You're on vacation, You're taking time away. This is your
downtime to say, I gotta get away from the game
for a while. And then you'll still work out, obviously,
but I'm not really getting back into things for a
little bit. This is the general time of the year
that I wind down. And Andrew luck this is the
time of the year he has wound down over the
course of his career when he was playing, because when
(02:25:18):
the Cults are losing in the playoffs, it's right around
the middle of of January after not making the playoffs.
So yeah, right now, I don't expect him to miss
the NFL at all. And you've got an offensive line
now that there's an enticement to come back. But he
got he got beat up for the first several years
of his career, and he got an awful lot of
money on that second contract. There's nothing forcing him back.
(02:25:39):
I don't know that we ever see him again. I mean,
I don't know that that it shows up again. You
got a baby at home. You certainly got to some
pretty big accomplishments in your career. Yeah, you don't have
a Super Bowl win, you got to a title game,
you got a bunch of accolades, you are a number
one pick, all of these things. Does he need football? Like?
(02:26:00):
That's that's the question, like a lot of these other guys.
And we're talking about it now with Brady trying to
extend again what we do in that same discussion with
Breeze here soon enough, right, the guy that we we
talked about as an underachiever, that's me underachieving in the
winning winning column. Um a lot of a lot of
stats to go with it. But you will talk about
(02:26:21):
his future, We'll talk about Philip Rivers future, all of
these things. Those guys, it's clear they still don't want
to play football. And it birds Andrew luck from anybody
he ever talked to. Like playing the game, love the
chess match of it, but is he missing it to
the point where after being away for a year, just
because his body is feeling better, he's not gonna remember
all those hits. He's not gonna remember all the bad days.
(02:26:45):
I don't think we ever see him again. For everybody,
it's a different. For anybody who leaves doing something that's
done their whole life and they get a break from it,
the break is is different for everybody. The length of
time now for a football player, you're talking about the
calendar year, four months is not enough. It is six
months of eight months. But once you get past the
year point, if he's a year and five months, a
year and a half, that's what I expected one for Andrew, like,
(02:27:08):
I could see the potential being there. But but he's
also always been described as quote a different kind of
cat when it came to the quarterbacks. And you're still
do it, but you're still doing stuff you love. Look
for it. When I when I left radio to go
an NFL network and an NFL network for three years,
I was still doing some radio, but I didn't really
find myself missing it until the final year. Until the
(02:27:30):
three year, I was like, boy, I really miss being
that full content guy that I was on the radio
every night for three hours, you know, driving my opinions
and you know, Billy being doing TV is fun and
you know, I mean, I've been doing it on and
off for the past few years. But there's a difference
between Hey, I'm on TV and talking for thirty seconds
and saying this and saying this when we're driving and
(02:27:51):
having good ten twelve fifteen minute conversations about things. But
it's still it takes its soul on you, right, And
I did it for you know, from from two thousand
and three full time up until two thousand eleven. I
needed a break, and as it turned out, in the
two years that I took where I was only doing
it a little bit, that was enough to recharge right
batteries just say okay, I'm ready to get back in
and do it again. So for me it was two years.
(02:28:12):
And this is just talking. For Andrew Luck physically what
he's dealing with for five years ago in in football,
a year and a half is a long long time.
Not the rest getting the rest either, though, man, I
mean having kids and diapers and chasing babies, having kids,
Twitter and out about of Fresca, Mike and Swollen Dome.
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmen. Yeah. One, AT's
(02:28:33):
when you look for Andrew lux return. It's with the
Patriots that I'm quitting. They'll be hanging out with Adam Gaze.
Coming up next, Well, what you gotta here? Coming off today?
It involves Jerry Jones, Mike McCarthy, bells. I mean, I
think that's all you need. That's next on Fox. Be
sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show
with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio
(02:28:56):
ah app whatever Tequila Fox Sports Radio. The Jason Smith
Show with my best friend Mike Harmon. It was limp
and dangly. I had to pull it out. So today
we watched Jerry Jones introduced Mike McCarthy to the world
as the new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, and
as only Jerry Jones ken, he gave a story that
(02:29:21):
he wanted to illustrate how he felt about McCarthy and
why he hired him. All right, here's the story, As
Jerry Jones said, take this through what you will. My
sister explained to my dad one time when she was
explaining why she wanted to divorce. So Jerry Jones's sister
was going to divorce her husband and Jerry jones dad
(02:29:43):
was asking why dad loved her husband, and he said,
what's gotten into you? And she said, I don't hear bells.
He said, bells, bells. I haven't heard bells for the
last thirty years. The bottom line is that a dad
trying to advise his daughter on the right move. But
the attom line is for Mike McCarthy, I heard bells.
(02:30:04):
So Jerry Jones telling a story that his sister wanted
to divorce her husband. The dad said why she was,
I don't hear bells anymore, meaning there's no excitement that
I need to be stimulated excitement. I'm not getting it.
Jerry Jones dad said, I haven't heard bells in a
long time. And it's a kind of a weird analogy,
but Jerry Jones wanted to let everybody know at the end. Hey,
(02:30:24):
when it came to Mike McCarthy, I heard the bells,
the beatles, there were bells on a hell, but I
never heard him ringing the silver bells too. That was
that was out. That was a good one. Bell devote
They did the poison song. Girl, I must warn you
seen something strange in my mind. If I could probably
(02:30:47):
do a Kickstarter tip for a charity and everybody would
kick in a dollar across this nation. To have Jerry
Jones go to press conference and you the bellman never
trust a big button a smile. That girl is poison him.
And now Mike McCarthy. Uh, you know, as far as
Jerry Jones talks about McCarthy, the glowing things he's saying
(02:31:07):
about him, this is more Jerry Jones from earlier today
talking about how Mike McCarthy was it. He was the guy,
and he had to hire him as head coach of
the Cowboys. I knew Mike McCarthy before he ever walked
through these doors, and I knew it from a lot
of different directions, so that while our time together initially
(02:31:29):
talking about this job was meaningful, so much more went
into how and why he's sitting at this table to day.
Even though when he said death didn't catch that ball
in the game, I still knew that he was our
guy and I had to go get him. Uh. You know, look,
I get that you want to say glowing things about
Mike McCarthy, but this tells me exactly how this entire
(02:31:52):
situation unfolded last week. Jerry Jones had no desire, did
not hear Mike McCarthy's name connected at all of the
Dallas Cowboys head coaching job. They were still meeting with
Jason Garrett, and Mike McCarthy was interviewing with with the
New York Giants. He was talking to the Cleveland Browns.
If Jerry Jones really wanted Mike McCarthy, he would have
fired Jason Garrett and would have hired Mike McCarthy right
(02:32:12):
after the season was over. If Mike McCarthy was that important,
you don't want him to take any chance of letting
him go. But when do we first hear they were interested?
Last Friday night, where they're gonna interview McCarthy and Marvin Lewis.
The next day McCarthy is spending the night at Jerry
Jones's house, and then the day after that he's the
Dallas Cowboys head coach. This was not McCarthy was our
first choice. Jerry Jones had the big names we had
(02:32:35):
talked about, but he couldn't make one of them happen,
whether it was Urban Meyer, Lincoln Riley. However, he was
approached them through back channels. He couldn't make the big
name happen, which is what he wanted. So when he
knew that wasn't gonna happen, suddenly it was a real
fast pivot to plan B, which was, let's get Mike
McCarthy and he's got the best resume, and Dallas did
a great job getting him. They got the right guy.
But it was such a fast pivot, you know that, Hey,
(02:32:57):
they had the names that they wanted that no he
was talking about, but he couldn't make it happen. Then suddenly, okay,
now we gotta go get Mike McCarthy. And that's how
it happened. Well, And he had planned C in the
building the whole time, right, he was never letting Jason
Garrett go until he had You went through all the channels,
And I firmly I would agree that there was a
lot of talk and the attempts to either steal coaches
(02:33:22):
from other situations or to grab some of those big
collegiate names, and a lot of that was dismissed later
on saying, oh, they were never looking at college coaches.
I don't know that that's necessarily the case. I think
I think there's still guys wanted to come in and
have control. Mike McCarthy is happy not having control, like
he'll do that. Erry could still be Jerry. All the
(02:33:44):
other guys. I'm sure there was a battle over what
they were gonna be able to do. McCarthy's is happy.
I can send plays and in the quarterbacks gonna run him.
