And the Giants get Judge Joe Brown to be their
next head coach. I'm sorry, but that's who he's gonna be.
He's gonna be Judge Joe Brown. He's not gonna be
Joe Judge. He's gonna be Judge Joe Brown. That's just
how it is that this the Giants went and hired
(00:43):
a guy that they're gonna call him by a name of.
I don't know Judge Joe Brown a real judge or
is he fictitious Joe. I think he's gonna have legitimate
judge ship do you have to have I don't know
do you have? I mean Wapner was legit. I think
Judge Judy is legit. She's a real Joe fraud. Wow,
take hundreds of millions of dollars? Could not act? Doesn't
(01:06):
make im it's a show, Joe Brown, It's Joe Bramer.
Shelby County, Tennessee Criminal Court judge. Okay, does he have
jurisdiction on television or is it just something that you
know they just play it up. I'm just making sure
you just signed contracts through the through the scheduling of
the show, because it's small claims just with a lot
(01:28):
of loud people. Yes, it's like, here's your thousand dollars,
we pay you out, and we're done. Thanks for the
half hour television. T J. Here comes the judge to
coach the giants. Yeah, but how many times are we
gonna see retreads of Joe? You know, Judge dread Or.
I was just gonna do the judge check one, d J.
(01:49):
Judge dreading his first NFC's tilt with the Cowboys. D J. Yeah,
there's your two hires for the day. Wait all the
Yankee and Giants playing the same day? Judges? Yeah, which
one wins the back page? I mean, come on, and
t J, No, Judge Ryan holding it up here? The
(02:11):
Giants get their man, d J. Judge Ryan Holding in
the first five minutes. Happy anniversary. That's the way to
start a new year, let me tell you. Oh boy,
and you getting to keep his straight face at this point.
But we did talk about Joe Brown last night, t J.
(02:31):
Joe Judge coming to the house that Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Bell New York. DJ, well, you'll have no problems. No
wait and wait, wait wait t J. No doubting judge.
Clarence Thomas's coaching the Giants now, d J. I'm gonna
(02:54):
get all the great uh judges and of the of
some perience, I'm not. I'm gonna I'm gonna get the
devil in Daniel Webster in stuff in here, I'm gonna get.
I'm gonna get all the great judges in history. What
about the new guy pounding beers? Oh yeah, that's a
tough one. I like beer. I think we have to
ask no football players do they have kangaroo court. I
(03:17):
know there's a lot of fines and a lot of
crazy fines that go around, but in baseball, through the
minor leagues and up to major leagues, you've got kangaroo courts. Right,
You did something out of the team rules and whatever.
So I mean, does does he reside over that process
as you go through? Well made a lot of discipline
When your name is je No, that's true. I mean
(03:37):
you have to. You have to kind of live up
to that name. You can't just be free and loose
with things. You can't just go Yeah, listen, guys, meeting times,
don't worry that. Whenever you want to get there, you
get there. I worked with Belichick. We had to wear hoodies.
Here we're all in flowing robes instead. The red challenge flat.
He's just gonna bang his gabble. He threw the gabble
(03:58):
the Giants two and seven and record as sober as
a judge to the fan base here this season d
j uh so all the judges, things are gonna come true.
But the look the Giants going higher. Joe Judge, who
is the Patriots wide receivers coach and now head coach
of the Giants, someone nobody was talking to. But suddenly
(04:19):
now it's hey, he's off the Belichick coaching tree and
Joe Judge and it's okay. I I I am stunned,
but not stunned, because obviously the first question is how
are they going to develop Daniel Jones. You need a mind.
And they've requested an interview with Jason Garrett, former head
coach of the Dallas Cowboys, to be there o c
(04:41):
something we'll get to in a couple of minutes. But
this shows you what I was afraid of that now
is not coming true. Because what do I what have
I always said about the Giants? Boy, the Giants. Things
always work out for them, right, it always works out
for them. They're gonna find a way to to bumble
their way away from Sam Donald and they got Barkley
and now they got Daniel Jones. All they're gonna find
(05:01):
a way. But this is the New York Giants. Okay.
There are there are three jobs in the NFL that
are as big a deal. It's you got the Giants,
you have the Cowboys, and you have the Patriots. Those
are the head coaching jobs. And you want to throw
the Pittsburgh Steelers and but they rarely change head coaches.
But those are the jobs in all of the National
(05:21):
Football League. Those are the jobs. Those are the jobs
that you hear from Jim Harbaugh's agent and Lincoln Riley's
agent and people you wouldn't be surprised. All the Giants
job is open. I want the Giants job, and this
year you had the Giants job and the Cowboys job
both open. The Cowboys got the number one candidate, which
shows you that the Cowboys head coaching job is still
(05:42):
a really good one because people believe in it, because
they have the talent on both sides of the football.
And Mike McCarthy, who was clearly the best candidate, goes
to the Dallas Cowboys. But here are the Giants. The
like I said, the Giants should have everybody jumping up
and down saying we want this job that should be
fighting people away, and instead we are now settling for
(06:03):
the wide receiver's coach of the Patriots. This shows you
that what the perception of the Giants is is this
is no longer a good job. It was a great
job for a long time, but this is no longer
a good job because they should have been able to
have their pick of anybody, even people who weren't candidates
coming into the season. But instead this is who they
have to settle for. They can't even get Matt rule.
(06:25):
All right, this guy okay, well that's gotta have Matt rule.
This guy's gotta bring along Daniel Jones. He's the one
last offensive coordinator with pedigree guy Josh McDaniels. Often, no, no, no,
Joe Judge is who they wind up getting. I mean,
so for all the teams in the NFL now can
stand up and say, hey, wait a minute, the Carolina
Panthers can say we matter just as much as the
(06:47):
Giants do. One of the most tried and true franchises
in all of the National Football League, all the history everything,
they represent, number one market in the country, and this
is who they have to go and say, we're gotta
take a chance on a guy that nobody else was interviewing,
but instead here we're gonna go get Joe Judge. That's
what people think of the Giants head coaching job, the curiosity.
I mean, we talked about Judge quite a bit yesterday,
(07:08):
and you got to run some Bourman lines, uh in
the midst of the McCarthy higher and why he didn't
why he got out of New York right to go
to Dallas to have the sleep over, and set forth
this series of repercussions. We'll get into Matt Rule a
little bit as the show develops, but Ian Rappaport reporting
that he had called the Giants to give them the
(07:30):
chance to match what the Panthers were gonna do, and
they declined and then immediately turned and hired Joe Joe
Blind Matt Rule for Joe Joe. Now we're talking about
the size of the contract, because that's one of the
things with Matt Rule, not so much about Matt Rule himself,
is how the market has now been kind of changed
in terms of coach compensation as related as as related
(07:52):
to the contract he signed with the Panthers. That's part
of the quizzical thing. You can talk all you want
about Matt Rule, like he brought a program and back
from Ashes and Baylor back to prominence. So there's certainly
about that in terms of building a program, which I
think was attracted to them With the Giants, I have
to wonder how much of it is Gettleman and trying
(08:15):
to get some cohesiveness in terms of vision with what
he's trying to do and what his explanations are of
his vision for the squad. So I'm wondering if there
wasn't somewhat of a disconnect there in terms of power,
because let's face it, all along the way you've got
each of these teams, there's a void and a couple
(08:36):
of them where they don't have a GM and just said, hey,
the coach will help it. Right. We talked about that
in Cleveland the Last man Standing, talked about that in
Washington with Rivera's higher. But make no doubt that these guys,
if they're going to come in with these kind of
contracts and this kind of um bravado, that they're gonna
have some say and wanting to pick the groceries too.
(08:57):
And I have to wonder if you've got a couple
of can that's that decided giants, doesn't that look? And
that's part of the Giants organization is that they decided, oh,
we're gonna have lame duck Dave Gentleman for one more year,
and people who would normally want that job, I'm gonna go, well,
I don't want to this guy. This guy is gonna
be the GM. He's a laughing stock and he's gonna
(09:19):
be the GM. And I don't know who the next
GM coming in is gonna because you're bringing a guy
in after this year. But it's fine. That's what you
watch Gentleman go after coaches you watched him go after
the players, right, and everybody's the GM, So why why
do I want to go exactly right, as much as
I may want to be part because look, one of
the most respected ownership groups in all of football, and
(09:42):
then you have the large gap to the guy they
hired to be the GM. So there's a huge disconnect
there in terms of, well, what's my tenure? Right? If
I'm coming in, am I getting my full run? That's
the problem with Cleveland, right, does anybody believe they're gonna
get their full four or five years? They're gonna get paid?
But what these are two bad tis the Giants and
the Browns are bad jobs. And this is why you
(10:03):
have to take chance at the bottom of the barrel.
I mean really that that it shouldn't be that way.
But I look at the Giants, it's part of the
entire organization. Yeah, I mean we look at judges pedigree.
And because he comes off the Belichick tree, it immediately
becomes all right, look at all the failures from the
Belichick tree. Maybe he's the guy that realized, hey, I
can't implement the same culture that was there. But he
(10:23):
worked under Saban, he worked under Belichick, I got to
imagine he's a pretty smart guy who knows how to
how to work a room to a degree right between
special teams, wide receivers coach and you can laugh about
what the wide receivers did in New England this year.
But overall he's a guy that Belichick trust, did a
bunch and don't trust many people. So I mean, there's
there's something to be said, mat But as long as
(10:45):
he's smart enough to learn from the past mistakes. Watching
Patricia Flounder in Detroit, there's that whole thing. Well, I mean,
he looks here, he knows where the body is buried.
He could go all uh, you know, former Jets coaches
lay things out if he wants to. Right, there was
no press conference today for Joe Judge, but he already
(11:07):
has met the team. He has we have audio of him.
He's already made a ruling in the locker room as
far as it comes to this team. So let's hear
this is from today. This is Joe Judge talking the
giants and making a big decision. It seemed that December
fourth year last two of you were hanging out in
the bathroom smoking cigarettes when you decided to step outside
(11:32):
your iPad, which was on the same counter top, was
knocked off by the defendant He's talking about. Barkley and
Daniel Johnson also broke our fifteen inch MacBook Pro year
proceeding at least till it was not paid for that
talking to him with respect, that was Odell. Is that
(11:57):
what got O'Dell Beckham Jr. Out to New York was
that the incident that I found out we were smoking
cigarettes and an iPad broke smoking crigulations to Judge Joe
Brown his new job. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at
ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
(12:19):
and the I Heart Radio Whip. Also in besides Joe
Judge in New York is Matt Rule, who came a
long way away from what was it ten days ago
when he told his players a bailor hey, when the
NFL calls, of course I'm gonna listen. Then I'm gonna
say no, and I'm gonna be right back here. Except
Matt Rules, all right, you gotta understand, okay, great, and
(12:40):
now oh the NFL called an here he is seven year,
sixty million dollar contract to coach the Carolina Panthers, and
those players all got a text telling him that he
was going, Hey, guys, sorry to find out. This is
like when the long time boyfriend and girlfriend, you know,
it's the night before one of them is leaving for college,
and and the guy says, we're gonna be together forever.
I am never going to cheat on you. Just because
(13:02):
my our colleges as away doesn't mean. Look, we're gonna
call every day, we're gonna write, we're gonna do all
these things. We're gonna skype, I'm gonna text you, We're
gonna do all of these things. I Am never gonna
cheat on you. And then he's and then the guy's
away for one the first weekend. It's up. I'm gonna
go find a year ago my first threat party. I'm
getting without understamp. I'm gonna find someone. Why Why did
you make the motion with your hand as you said that,
(13:24):
like you were putting on the hat stand. You did
a stamp, But you also did a thing like you
were putting and adjusting the bill of my path. I
mean business, I need I need to bring my hat.
This is this hat game. This is the hat game.
Over when you take the hat off just so you know.
This is the hell. But that just it. He had
to pick out a nice, sharp looking one to take
(13:44):
to the party. The other thing is I heard it.
I I don't know if anybody can can can really?
I mean I would need Twitter. I guess about corroboration
is that I've heard that women have said if they're
not going to hook up with a guy, if they
need at a bar ever, and he's wearing a hat
like a hat is a is a is a like
a like a note, like like a thing, that's just
(14:05):
no right away now, if you're wearing a hat, I'm
gonna un we're not getting together. And but that I
could never confirm that that was something that many women
thought of it. I'm like, I wear hats all the
time before when I was single. I'm like, I'm wearing
I still wear hats now, but I'm like, wear hats
all the time. Well, it might have been exclusive, that's
(14:25):
it against you, And it doesn't mean that because because
in New York you weren't wearing a Yankees hat. If
we were in Italy, you'd make my bed no. But
but if you were in New York when you were
in college and thereabouts. The fact that you weren't wearing
Yankees meant you would pick the losers that I'll blank
(14:46):
that guy, or she just goes, oh yeah, I'll date
him because I could walk all over him. He's a
Mets fan. Don't do whatever I want. I don't care.
I could cheat on him, it'll be great. Yeah yeah,
but when I need to go to a dance or something,
I'll take me. No. I don't mean like when a
woman sees a guy in had girls, he's the guy
and I had its own. No, No, I just mean
like that night, like if they needed a party or
it's no at'n put that question. Put it up there.
(15:07):
Would you hook up with a guy the night you
met him if he was wearing a hat? And put
that up there. Okay, well we'll put that on Twitter.
At one do on Instagram? As you know what. The
biggest thing that I found, and this is many women
have told me this the biggest the worst thing you
can do on a date, on a first date, the
(15:28):
absolute worst thing. Well, well yeah that would be bad too.
Hey you want to go get that. It's a winded
right there. Just flick this out. Just gonna flip this
out of the window right here. That or pull my
finger right, we'll pull my fingers. That that's tough. Knock
on the door, ding dong, Hey pull my finger. Uh No.
The worst thing you can do on a first date
(15:48):
not open the car door when they get in, or
if you well, I don't know that you get a
date if that happens, I think that the dad just
shuts the door and says, how do you're not going
out tonight? Here's here's here's a hundred dollars, go buy
something on line. No, if you don't open the door
for her when you when you pick her up and
take her and you can open up the door, that's it,
like every woman. Oh yeah, if you open the door
for me, that's it. Basic, that's it basic shiver. Might
(16:11):
as well not even go on the date. I was like, wow,
I'm glad I opened the door all the time, opened
the door, opened the door to the car. I mean,
there's there's little niceties that shouldn't have been gone to
the way. Chivalry's dead. Or you do what I do.
Support you get her to come pick you up. Oh
you want to go out, you come pick me up?
You open my door oh, and I'll wear the hat too.
(16:32):
It's gonna be a Mets hat and it's gonna be
not with the New York symbol. It's gonna have a
big Mr. Met on it. And he's gonna have a
bat and he's gonna be kissing Mrs Met and she's
got a bat. Oh and now we're gonna get together
because of the hat. And I'm gonna say, you see
these kissing people up here with big heads. Now we're
gonna kiss right now. You got boots, baby, Let's get
(16:55):
out of the car and go back up to my room.
I gotta you better. You at a Mrs Matt outfit.
I got the Mr. Mad outfit. We're both gonna have
the big giant edds of baseballs and we're gonna hook up.
Let's go. Come on, you can do this character. I mean,
I know the new season of the Bachelor premiered last night.
If you could go on in this garry, we now
know what role plays like this. That's that's what happens,
(17:15):
that's how we do it. I got this big headed
guy in my hand. Come on, you're looking at these kids.
And last week I had to be Jim Harbaugh. It
was really difficult, right, and it was really mean last week.
You're still wearing a Michigan sweater. Yeah, you forgot to
take that. You love the lost the hat in the
Khaki's and I gotta watch this. I'm gonna press the button.
(17:38):
You're gonna meet the Mets. There you go ahead. That's
a big song for the night, said, they're playing our song, Mets,
step right up and meet the Med's It's you and
Me the Big Med's heads Twitter And how about Fresca, Mike,
And this is what happens when the Giants hired Judge
(17:58):
Joe Brown to be there coach. This is what happens
on the show. That's what happens. Larry, actually have made
more sense? Have they hired the real judge Joe Brown?
He just comes in hitting God into the gavel, Bang
bang bang. Be sure to catch live editions of The
Jason Smith Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern,
(18:22):
seven pm Pacific. You know, the big drama surrounding the
Lakers is not so much about their record about coming
back from things. Now, it's really become what do we
do to get better? Because we've talked about the Lakers
issues of a few days ago, and that my only
(18:43):
real concern is are the Lakers a regular season champion
type team. When you're playing one of a D two
and here's Lebron and a D and good luck stopping them,
it's one thing. But then when you're playing a seven
game series against them, you can shut them down and
they're not getting offense from anybody else. There's nobody else
coming to the rescue going yeah, I'll give you all
these points. I'll give you twenty five points, like there's
(19:05):
nobody that can do that. This is why I always
say I like the Clippers better long term because they
have those guys. The Lakers don't have anybody you can
count on to say, all right when we need baskets
and if Lebron is not getting him or a D
is not getting them. Every team that wins a championship
has a great supporting cast because you need that supporting
cast in the playoffs. The Lakers don't have that. They
(19:26):
need shooters. So now we saw reports today on on
many different sites that the Lakers are listening to offers
for Kyle Kuzma, and they range from offers I've seen
saying or potential trade scenarios i've seen going. Okay, Madonovitch
might be nice if you can get him. He's going
(19:46):
to last year of his comment. That's if there's a
couple of them that are floating out there. But it's
all about making the money. Makes sense right based on
what Kuzma makes compared to some of these batter well,
you know is gonna throw cigarettes in there. Oh yeah,
He'll throw a whole truck full of cigarette. He'll he'll
just drive and he's gonna drive him down. He's just
gonna drive down from Sacramento with him, just get he
(20:06):
takes the coastal route. He gets to see some some
good views. I think he uses his own voice on ways.
I have Paul Mall, I have Marlborough, I have whatever
you need. Smoke. We all will smoke together, we all,
we all will have time for smoke break. You know,
I think bloody instead of the videos that you see
when when when a player signs and he holds up
to jersey at the Press Continent, everybody smiles. It's just
(20:28):
be everybody smoking cigarettes. I don't want to see the
rookies with cigarettes going what he's the Mike Lingard of
the NBA Mike Lingard, a man who works in the
building known to take a nice smoke break or two.
But if you do select Bloody for ways, do you
get two different trips. So it's like it will take
you in five hours, no smoke break, seven hour. You
(20:52):
can smoke in the car. If you can smoke in
the car, maybe you do, maybe the other couple of
miles an hour off because it's really hard to get
that cigarette to get rid of the ash out the
window if the wind is blowing in your face. Well,
but just from you know, trying to be kind to
your your partner, your spouse, your kids, whatever, Maybe you
don't smoke in the car. Maybe you decide you gotta
go out into mother nature. And that's picture of Floody
(21:15):
and everybody you have. You have the rookie player, you
have the head coach agent. Everybody's just smoking a cigarette
instead of holding up the jersey. Can we superimpose Bloody
back into one of those ads that the flint Stones
used to do. Hey, you gotta inhale, You gotta inhale,
all right, that's the rule. You can't just you can't
just fake it. You gotta inhale. Guys that are gonna
(21:35):
work hard and give me here. But this is what
I don't like about the offers they're getting is that
Kuzma is a guy that can make shots. I mean,
this shows you how far his stock has fallen in
that last year. At this time, he was Lebron's one A.
He was, Hey, you know what. The chemistry they have
(21:57):
on the court is undeniable, and lab On and Kyle
Kuzma worked great together. Kuzma can go for thirty, he's
in the spot. Lebron likes him to be at on
the court at all times, and Kuzma was the one
untouchable right whatever. We were throwing out trade ideas at
this time last year, for Anthony Davis, it was yes,
a Lonzo go right in Ingram, go, Josh Hard go,
I gotta go. No. But Kuzma's gotta stay. He was
(22:19):
because he works with Lebron and he became the rep
at the draft. I mean, he was the face. And
now it's Kyle Kuzma. We're looking to trade him. This
is why I don't like this, because the Lakers need
more shooters. They need more. They need quantity, all right.
It's not like they're missing one guy. They need a
couple of guys. If they trade Kuzma, they need three
(22:40):
guys who can come off the bench and score because
k cps not doing it, Rondo's not doing it, Caruso
is not doing it. Nobody they have is coming off
the bench that's gonna be able to score points. They
need three guys. That's the inflat. That's the difference between
the Lakers right now being a paper regular season champion
and a team that can win the championship is they
need three guys that can score, not three shooting guards,
(23:03):
but you need three guys off the bench that can
fill it up. And if you trade, cause well that's
one guy, now, you need three of them. I mean,
you can't just make one movement say okay, we're bringing
in Magdanovitch or whoever, and and this is gonna solve
our things, all right. No, that's one guy coming up.
Are you gonna count on him every night? No? This
is why you're talking about support players and bench players,
because not every night did they score twenty five. But
(23:25):
if you have three guys, one every night, you're gonna
hit one of them. One of them is gonna be hot.
And that's what you need. You need that production off
your bench and the Lakers don't have it. Just watch
the Lakers when either Lebron or Anthony Davis isn't on
the floor, and you see a team that you go, wow,
there's really one option going on right now. There's one
(23:47):
will wind up being in the All Star Game. But
you see a team that and you're gonna see it
in the fourth quarter because look that Lakers are gonna
be up by fifty and you're gonna see in a
fourth quarter, you know, wow, where is the offense gonna
come from? Isfen because it's not coming anywhere. But we
need three guys. We've seen a few games where Danny
green Is is hitting big shots and had you know,
four or five three point connections along the way. Kyle
(24:11):
Kuzma is your third leading score on the squad. He's
not been very good. He was injured for part of it.
Is shot has been off for much of the season.
He's averaging eleven point eight. It's the hair do Mike well,
I mean, that's is that why they made him shave
his head? And then you had the whole thing with
the trainer. So whatever the trade value was and the
possible exploration of dealing him. Now. You also have the
(24:33):
we've got to tamp down anything that this isn't is.
This is a bigger piece than just a distress property
that they're trying to move because he doesn't get Lebron
doesn't want him there anymore. Right after the trainer comments
and him liking trainer comments and deleting tweets and backing
off and all of that stuff, and then Lebron's body
(24:55):
language said, if I could smack him upside the head
right now, I would, Then all of a sudden, the
trade deadline and trade offers start floating out. You also
don't want to look weak, as this is a piece
we just have to get rid of because there's a
problem in the locker room as you roll. But to
your point, I don't know where the veterans come from.
A couple of guys are gonna shake loose because of
(25:17):
their contracts. They're gonna just be be let go. So
maybe you can find one or two veterans on the
cheap that can fill it up a little bit. Maybe
you go to guys who are quote retired not retired.
There's a few of those floating about. So I don't
think this Lakers team is going to look anything like this,
especially if the Knicks get more cracks at him, because
(25:38):
they have played dirty basketball tonight. And right now, Anthony
Davis is now on the ground in pain. Yeah, A
d just went down. He is clutching the top of
his left buttock. That's about as well as you can.
I mean, that's about that's about. That's about where it is. Yeah, hebone,
he is clutching his letting out now more towards the tailbone.
He is laying prone on the ground. Time is out
(26:00):
to five to go in the third quarter. Lakers lead
the next two. They just went to commercial break on this.
This just happened as we are speaking. Took a hard
fall on his tailbone area after Julius Randold drove through traffic.
There's been a lot of hard falls in this game tonight.
It's been a dirty game tonight. This play and just
(26:21):
tried to take down JaVale McGhee about two minutes ago.
He neck tackled him. So, I mean, this is this
is one where you just want to get these guys
to the showers and get out of here healthy with
a victory. Yeah. So we'll see the replay again tonight.
But this is a d on defense, and it looked
like it was an awkward fall for Anthony Davis. But again,
we'll see this as it comes out. But look, as
(26:41):
far as the Lakers go, as far as for trades,
I mean, look, if you want to win a championship,
you have to have a supporting cast. This Lakers team,
the way it's built right now, can go home in
the second round of the playoffs. Obviously for finishing the
top one in the West, you're gonna play it team
that is not quite there for you. You could struggle
(27:02):
in the first round, but when you play a team
that sells out defensively and can stop you, they're gonna say, listen,
we're gonna stop Lebron and Adian and and hold you
down as much as we can, and let's see if
you have other guys that can beat us. And the
Lakers are really vulnerable as far as that scenario goes,
which is why they need guys. That's why the Clippers. Look,
that's why having Harold Lou Williams is such a big deal.
(27:23):
When you can have the art, you know it's not
worth Kauai. You can sit for a few minutes, Paul George,
you can sit for a few minutes not working. Let
these guys out. Look Lou Williams has twenty five points
in twenty minutes. Hey, that's why we're floating this game.
Kauai come back in the fourth quarter and have a
big quarter for us. You need that. It's not about
regular season. Regular season Lakers are fine, but when you
get to the playoffs at seven game series and teams
(27:43):
are playing big defensively, that's what it's all about. Don't
need a massive rotation, but certainly need one or two
more guys that can can fill it up. Right Because
Lamron James right now averaging just shade under thirty six
minutes a game, so getting rest and some of these games,
let's facing not a lot of dress ful minutes in
the second half. But it'll be curious as we get
(28:05):
closer to March and April how the rotation looks and
really what this this squad looks like for Frank Vogel.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart
Radio app. A big change could be coming to your
television Monday Night Football this year. As a story that
(28:27):
came today first out of the New York Post, ESPN
considering replacing Booker McFarland and Joe Testa Tour on Monday
Night Football, rumored that they make a big run at
Tony Romo too be the new lead analyst on Monday
Night Football. However, there's all kinds of contracts and rites
and and a whole bunch of different things to get
(28:47):
to when you're trying to figure out who's going to
be the lead broadcast or what they're gonna do on
Monday Night Football. Now here's the thing about Booker McFarland,
and he sucks. I Well, look, it's not that him
and Joe test It tour. I've said this from the beginning.
They don't do a bad broadcast. They do a broadcast
that looks like it could be the number four game
on a Sunday afternoon on Fox. If they were doing
(29:10):
Arizona and the forty Niners, nobody would care. If they
were doing the Titans and the Jaguars, nobody would care.
But it's Monday Night Football. And as someone who has
bobbed been at ESPN a couple of times, they go
in certain and cycles. They go from cycles of we're
not hiring big talent and we're gonna just let the
the content go, and then they realize we've got to
(29:32):
spend money on big talents, and then they go right
checks and they bring in a few big names. Then
they don't do that anymore for a while. Then they
go back to that's just how it goes in the ESPN.
You see, it goes in cycles. Here comes a lot
of money they throw at people, and then that goes
for a few years and they realized, wait, we gotta
cut a little bit. Nobody cares about the personality, so
we're just gonna treat talent as necessary evil. So we're
(29:52):
not gonna spend a lot of money. We're gonna promote
from within, right, That's what he There's a lot of
rumors about the cycle going back to the big money,
even Romo sure, but over the last couple of weeks.
But but a guy like Booker McFarland is he made
his legend on like Bleacher Report, Radio and and Yahoo.
I believe he was on places like that and he
(30:13):
was a fun and entertaining guest. And there's many guys,
there's many ex football players who get on the radio
and for ten minutes can tell great stories and are
are great guests. We have him on, Oh my god,
this guy is so great, and then you overestimate their
real talent and you give him a job like this,
(30:35):
you go right from that to Monday night football. Then
it's oh, wow, he's really not ready. You can't every
week keep looking at and go what did he say
this week? Oh that the bill should spike the ball
on third, should run a draw play on third and ten,
and spiked the ball on fourth down. I mean that
how many mistakes like that can he make? No, there's
been a miracle that went against the Vikings. I mean,
(30:58):
you can't keep having that awful lot of captain obvious
kind of comments as well the folks that are tuning
in for those games. Look, I know there's something to
be said about catering to the y you are broadcasting,
but you have to assume some certain level of knowledge,
maybe out of the rules because the rule book is
just such a mess, but in terms of general football protocol,
(31:21):
I mean there's an awful lot of times where you're
just raising your eyebrow going wow, that was wasted five
seconds or wasted ten seconds, right, So Tampa to the
SEC network and then Odd to here. So you go
to the biggest platform that in Sunday Night Football right
now Fox with Thursday Night Football. It's been elevated to
a whole other level right with with Joe Buck and
(31:42):
Troy Aikman. But yeah, for for Boogram McFarland, I mean
it was last year was all about the battle between
he and Jason Witten and what what what he was
going to tell you when he was on the crane there,
there's there's what you can do in small doses and
what how happens when you get that bigger dose realize,
oh boy, somebody, this this person really can handle it.
(32:04):
It's it's like somebody who on Twitter has all the
great one liners and then they go on a show
and suddenly it's like they're they're they're looking at the
screen blankly. I don't know what to say. I can't
carry out a conversation. I'm only good firing off one
liners on Twitter. And the folks that work off scripts
and then they've got to add limb a conversation. It's
it's it's what happens when you just think, Okay, this
(32:26):
guy can do this job, and you slowly realize, okay,
it's not working and whatever it is he had, he
started out lower and got more reps and got more
comfortable and because the guy's got a good personality, but
could not have change things for him. Yeah, but you
take a look. They put Boomer size and right on
Monday night football. He was can't miss, and what happened
(32:47):
he had to he had. They had to cut him
out after like a year and a half, and it
took him a while to build himself back up into
being the broadcast he is. I mean, it's it's hard
to say, take you from hey, you haven't done this,
to now do it on Monday Night football and he
starts saying things like run the draw on third down
and spike the ball on fourth ten, which you know
that he knows you can't do that, but that's what
winds up happening.
