(00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Hello, that happy Tuesday.
Welcome inside the Jason Smith Show with my best friend
Mike Harmon. Wearing a hat that literally says badass on it. Yeah,
that's right. It's a picture of a donkey and it
says badass and you're wearing it. Sounds like meat on it.

(00:45):
Uh sure, either the donkey part or the you know
bad Yeah, No, definitely. I I look at the donkey.
I see the donkey first, then I see that. I've
sently heard a number of people and on Twitter they
respond to some of the hot takery calling me a

(01:05):
donkey or a horse's ass. No, No, I got a hat,
gona advertise and it's a Skully Tiah. It's a good scully,
good good nit hat. Yeah. That's definitely one of those
where you where you're standing around a fire in a
trash can saying it take me back, do do do?
We have so much fun NFL coaching news to get

(01:27):
to tonight. We have winners, we have losers, we have
guys with jobs, we have guys without jobs. We have
teams that are continue to just interview people jets and
not have an answer on the horizon. But I will
tell you the sports personality that we really needed tonight,
someone that we really needed because obviously the biggest story

(01:47):
in the world tonight President Trump's address about getting funding
to build the wall to keep terrorists out um at
the Mexico United States border. Yeah, look at for five
points seven billion dollars. Yes, did about an eight minute speech,
and then you had the rebuttal from Chuck Schumer and
Natsy Pelosi as as set up, so you know, nothing

(02:11):
really knew, no new grounds what we thought. You know,
Trump says we needed for security, and Pelosi and Schumer said,
we don't need it for security. We're fact checking, we're
doing all of these things now. Obviously not to get political,
but there really is a sports personality we missed tonight,
and the guy we needed was mean Gene Oker. We
needed Meanene to come in because this is what tonight

(02:34):
was Meanie coming. I've seen some people on Twitter say,
oh boy, you know the late mean Gene Oker and
rest in peace, Like yeah, he would have been awesome tonight.
I would make it. Come on in if you will.
White House nine o'clock tonight, see it and Fox News
every single that work. That's the President. Don oh my,
oh my hair, he comes wearing the red power time.
Oh my, he's gonna talk about getting money for a

(02:55):
border wall. Let's take a mat to listen to the
w w E Hall of Fame. The President, what do
you have to say about getting funding for a border wall.
The border wall would very quickly pay for itself. The
cost of illegal drugs exceeds five hundred billion dollars a year,
vastly more than the five point seven billion dollars we

(03:17):
have requested from Congress. The wall will also be paid
for indirectly by the great new trade deal we have
made with Mexico. Senator Chuck Schumer, who you will be
hearing from later tonight, has repeatedly supported a physical barrier
in the past, along with many other Democrats, and there

(03:40):
it is the President giving you the reasons why we
need the border wall. And now, oh my goodness, Oh
my goodness, look who's it is, Senator Chuck Schumer. Oh,
and it's it's Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Oh my, what do
you have to say in rebuttal to what you have
just heard. I appreciate the opportunity to speak directly to

(04:01):
the American people tonight about how we can end this
shutdown and meet the needs of the American people. Sadly,
much of what we heard from President Trump throughout this
sense of shutdown has been full of misinformation and even alice.
Oh my, February the fourteenth, Medicine Square Garden, it's Trump,

(04:21):
It's Schumer, It's Polosi. Coming up next, Tito Santana puts
the Intercontinental Belt on the line, and don't don't forget
Later on tonight, it's love Boat on at ten o'clock,
followed by your local news Chatel eleven. I mean Gene Okerland,
It's it's World Wrestling Federation Saturday morning. There you go.
I mean Gene. Didn't mean Gene even the hero we

(04:44):
needed we needed tonight, I mean they also needed some
better staging. Oh my, oh, look at this well, was
a bad look from a television perspective, like you've got
people that are supposed to be image makers there, it's well,
didn't come off looking strong, like you're sitting next to
each other and kind of hanging out. I mean, come on, now,
the president's a reality show. Start. We needed better music,

(05:06):
we needed lighting, we needed smoke. I mean really, am
I the only one that missed the smoke? No, there
was some vision and there's more smoke. Yeah, you were
a visionary in that regards up camera angles to make
them look really bad. I mean we needed that. Well,
the key to the President Trump clip that you heard
was the next lines, like they supported the barrier until
I got into office. Then it becomes personal to get

(05:26):
some dramatic music going. And then that's when they busted going. Wait, wait,
wait a minute, let me tell you what's all going on.
That's what Paul Bearer could have come in. These are
the ashes of the people who wouldn't agree with building
the wall before. Do you think they were staging that
in heaven or hell wherever they are right now? Paul
Bear hanging out, It's just one long entire thing up there.

(05:47):
All right, let let's do this let's do this, let's
do this, let's do this. We need that. I could
have used some w w E tonight with that, I
could a little minute of television magic a little bit more.
I could have used undertaker music when Pelosi and Schumer
came in, dog just a bong bong and people go
and you need a live audience. We need a live audience,
people to yell and go crazy and yell things pro

(06:08):
Trump and anti Trump and all this. We need all
that stuff. I think I would have taken it next,
would tune back into politics. Otherwise, they got about fifteen
minutes and said, what did I learn? Yeah, yeah, I
mean it was a lot of pre show for a
you know, for it was a lot of a lot
of build up to wait a minute, was this a
clip show? I mean, look, we've given these speeches before.
It's it's kind of like the the Olympics, when you know,

(06:28):
people train their entire lives for you know, four minutes. Like, oh,
I got all this pre show for fifteen minutes. We
need something long. You make it a longer event. Well
on a tom Ronaldi piece with corn soothing music underneath,
right like after yes, after after Trump speaks a tom
Ronaldi piece going through the lives of Chuck Schumer and
Nancy Pelosi getting to the point they are right now.

(06:49):
You know, Jimmy Roberts would have been good too. Oh yeah, no,
I mean Roberts would have been good. Jimmy Roberts out
of that, and then Senior Bob cob Cost just comes
over the top to do that. He's gotta do the throw, yes, exactly,
he's goal. Yeah. And because Jimmy Roberts, because like MS
Jimmy Roberts, he would because he would talk in that
cadence that is just like that behind the music type cadence.

(07:10):
But Pelosi thought she'd never be in power again until now.
I mean that should be that his entire third pause.
Mike Piazza thought he would play for Los Angeles his
entire career until now. I mean that that's when we
missed that. That's there, It is there. It is re
encapsulated the political climate of America and put it into

(07:33):
w W parlance, including the Hall of Famer President Donald Trump.
We could have had Berman introducing things and thank you
President Trump, and now Schumer, Bills c will be seeing
Nancy Pelosi coming in here now. DJ Tag Team Champions
of the World best tag that's we need the piece

(07:58):
on that. And then one of those hid the music
or not one of those. Then they split up. The
eighties Policey divided them for a while, but then again
they had something that brought them back together and cause
good spear a common enemy. Oh yeah, yeah, there you go.
And then maybe one of the or maybe one of

(08:19):
those like v H one, I love the eighties. Here's
your countdown of top tag teams of all time. You
know where does Pelusi and Schumer rank? You know, you
have the British Bulldogs, you have the Heart Foundation, you
had Tony Atlas and Rocky Johnson, which you would get
into the rock I mean, you would have these great
tag teams and then you'd get too Okay, where do
they rank? And where are you get the social media
aspect going on? It would have been awesome. Yeah, we

(08:41):
really need to build a website and really put this out.
This is a good work of fan fiction right here.
You know, I'll tell you what I tell you. The
world gets Trump, Pelosi and Schumer, and we get Kingsbury Arians,
monk in Brown's kitchens, we get all kinds of Curran
Cutter we get Dirk Cutter heavy you Can't Go Home Again,
and starts singing the Jennifer Natals find Jovi classic. You

(09:08):
could take the Home from the Boy, but not the
boy from his home. These are my streets, the only
life I've ever known. Dj uh Let's start. Come on
in if you will to Jason Smith Show with My
Garment Live from the Guy Goes Studio. Let's start with
the shocker of the day. Cliff Kingsbury had a phenomenally

(09:31):
successful run as USC's offensive coordinator, par laying that job
into becoming the next head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
Cliff Kingsbury went from here's a guy fired from Texas
Tech who couldn't win big with Patrick Mahomes too, Well,
what's gonna happen now here? He is gonna remake his

(09:52):
career as the offensive coordinator at USC, run the offense
for a couple of years, get things going, get his
name back in lights. Nope, Nope, gonna bypass all of
that and gonna go right to being head coach of
the Arizona Cardinals. That's that's what we saw today. And
I gotta be honest. My first reaction, and I think

(10:12):
This is a reaction of everybody across the country who
has an opening in their team. Oh, I'm glad we
didn't hire Cliff Kingsbury. I'm glad it wasn't us. I'm
glad it was Arizona. I'm so glad it wasn't us. Look,
how does a guy go from being someone who was
fired from the lower level power five schools into saying, yeah,
you know what, you're such an offensive innovator, we want

(10:35):
you to come take over here in Arizona. Now, in theory,
I get it. He's a guy that brought Patrick Mahomes along.
And you'll hear from Jason Luck and forward a second
that really kind of hits the Mahomes Kingsbury era on
the head. And the NFL is an offensive league now,
And I get everybody wants their own Sean McVeigh. If
you've had a conversation with Sean McVeigh, it gets you
an interview somewhere. I've talked about Sean McVeigh on the

(10:57):
air for a couple of years. Now, can I get
interview somewhere? I mean, there we go. I'm hired. That's
gotta be. I can't believe no one's talk nothing else.
We should be able to go work in the front
office somewhere, should be the jets o ce. I mean,
not the head coach yet I want to you know,
I gotta get my feet wet. But I get that
in theory that this is why Cliff Kingsbury becomes a
hot name, but realistically as a head coach, he has
not done very well. I mean, I know you can say,

(11:19):
well you can, you can, you can cut it away
and go, well, here's what he does. Is is is
he he you know, grows the talent and he's a communicator. Okay,
that's great. He's the head coach. And how did he
do He did not do very well. He wasn't somebody
that was highly sought after until suddenly, hey, you know,
Cliff Kingsbury's out there. This is such a weak year
to have a head coaching opening. It is incredibly weak

(11:42):
because those guys aren't out there to have those openings
for the last two years, when McVeigh was out there,
when Shanahan was out there, when those big names were there.
But now it's not and you have to have somebody.
So you're seeing suddenly off the board, as Matt Lafleur
I mean really, I mean, the Titans offense wasn't that great.
He was a hot name come into the season. He
wasn't that hot at the end. But there's nobody else,

(12:03):
and teams are now reaching to go get that quote
offensive name, which is why you see Cliff Kingsbury getting
the job at the Arizona Cardinals. Now when we get
into the Kingsbury hiring the second year in a row,
we're on the Arizona Cardinals and their new higher obviously
Steve Wilkes job. There had been a lot of scuttle
butt as to when the flirtation and meetings began, right

(12:26):
and Lynn Swan blocking things. Heard Bruce Feldman on a
little bit earlier here in Los Angeles talking those conversations
were long in the books. They'd had multiple meetings before
any of that really started to break. And the word
of uh denial and how much is real and imagined
and spin and whatever else is certainly out there, and

(12:48):
and and Bruce made a great point. Since it's a
private institution, a lot of that stuff is never coming
coming out in terms of the details of the contract
that was proffered. But when you get to Kingsbury, the
question is all right, you made these changes. You've got
eight openings. The only one had been filled, uh in
Green Bay. That's it. You got la fleur. So your
question from a collegiate to professional side of all right,

(13:13):
running an offense, being an innovator talent evaluator is a
whole other thing between college and pro right and having
people on your staff that know what the hell they're
doing versus in the pros you work with the groceries
you're given until you're a tenured guy, unless you're the
wonder kid that that gets that you know, carte blanche

(13:34):
and you get to build and do all that, or
you're the veteran that's being plucked away or whatever. I
don't know think Kingsbury is gonna get to go and
be the personnel guy. So that's certainly the difference between
that in college that he doesn't have that part of
the job, so he can't screw that up, right, But
what's but what's his strength to make him an NFL
head coach? You know, I coach Patrick Mahomes. That's great,

(13:54):
And hey, let's listen to Jason lock and forward from
last one on the show CBS Sports NFL Insider kind
at the nail on the head with Hey, Cliff Kingsbury
is gonna be a head coach Patrick Mahomes and he
couldn't like he didn't even play the significant bulgame, you
know what I mean? Like, what about missing here? But
Patrick Mahomes comes into the NFL and obliterates it. He's unstoppable.

(14:17):
This guy had him in college again? Kids? What the
missing here? Where is the undefeated? Where are the record books?
Where's touchdowns? What? He's supposed to get a job because
he coaches kid But they couldn't be teenagers? Women, that's
you're telling me the death stop got blown up by

(14:37):
a bunch of bleeping teenagers. I mean, really, that kind
of hits it on the head because I get you
can cut things up and cut away what you like
and don't like about candidates, But in the end, you
get big time jobs by achieving to get them, not
because well, no, wait a minute, here's a well you
should get him well and gary anywhere. You should have

(15:01):
to do something to earn your job. But we all
know no matter what you do, And if you're driving
sitting on the four oh five in Los Angeles High
I probably saw you for an hour and a half today,
or wherever you are across these great United States and
around the globe, there's always, you know, nepotism and crony
ism and everything at work and a lot of other

(15:21):
subtext and back door conversations that happen in your companies
no matter where you work. And the NFL is no different.
I mean, but that's the idea that it's a meritocracy.
Here's many people who have achieved better. And I mean,
go to the the NBA. We're talking about this is big.
We're getting a job at thirty two for Minnesota. You

(15:42):
are healthy. We talked about it last night a little
bit about how Dabo Sweeney hey may not be a
guy cut out for the NFL. And this is a
guy that's won two national championships, playing in three games
and as a dynasty and it's probably going back at
least once in the next two years. And we're saying
he might not be an NFL. But but the thing
with him, but that's it, though, the difference between when

(16:03):
you look at dab o'sweeney and what he's all about
and that post game presser, right and those comments that
came out, It's all about family, community building, support, recruiting
and and the love right, the fact that guys were
giving him a wet willie while he's being interviewed became
a big deal that that's the level of comfort and

(16:24):
the type of locker room that they have there. Oh no,
you could do that in the pros right, that it
would translate. Yeah, No, Listen, it's it's a case of
supply and demand, and the demand does not nearly meet
the supply. So that's why we're scraping the bottom of
the barrel where you're seeing Cliff Kingsbury fail upwards. Did
you get from Texas time? Although I don't know what's
a better gig coach in Texas? Teger coaching Arizona. I'll

(16:46):
go through the Cardinals when we come back, and I'll
tell you why it's We're just getting started right now.
More on the big NFL head coaching hirings, who's got
jobs and who's still got openings. We're break it all
down coming up next on box. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon
weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific on Fox

(17:08):

a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two.
We are farmers under written. My farmers took fire insurance
exchanges than affiliates products unavailable in every state. Fox Sports Radio.

(17:28):
It is the Jason Smiths Show with my best friend
Mike Harmen, live from the Geico Studios, where fifteen minutes
can save you fift more in car insurance. More info
visit geico dot com. So so much coaching news to
get to. We talked a few minutes ago about Cliff
Kingsbury landing the Arizona Cardinals job. And if there's any

(17:49):
job that's perfect for a Cliff Kingsbury, HiT's the Arizona Cardinals. Look,
go ahead, go there and see what you can do
with Jos Rosen. But you like the Arizona job, well,
I think it's slightly better. Obviously, it means that you're
you're counting on your general manager to stay right and
do his job properly, you know. And in the excising
of Steve Wilkes, the wandering of whether he should have

(18:13):
lost his job along the way right for putting that
squad together. Uh, and certainly being a problem off the
field as well. So steve come the fact that he's
still there. You know, he's a bit on the hot
seat as well. But you've got Rosa David Johnson. You
gotta fix the offensive line while you got some seventy
to seventy five million dollars in cap space or they're

(18:34):
abouts to do it. Uh, You've got a couple of
standouts defensively that can get it done. Who knows, you know,
Kristen Kirk coming back off injury, he had a couple
of moments where it looked like he could be an
okay second third receiver. You gotta go find someone to
replace and work alongside Larry Fitzgerald if he comes back.
Because your wide receiving corps obviously thin. But if you

(18:57):
got that kind of pile of money, I out to
think you'd be able to get someone out to Arizona.
Do you think you you'd be able to recruit Arizona Cardinals?
They really miss Bruce Arians. They're like, wow, we watched
Bruce Arians just go to Tampa Bay. Wow. Yeah, Well,
I mean Bruce Arians when it went away for a
year and then they realized, Hey, we liked him. Now
that's the hiring. I like, we'll get to that coming
up in about half hour. But you've got some assets

(19:20):
and some opportunity, and it's it's not all doom and gloom. Well,
I mean he looks a lot of it. Like if
we go back to before the season, right, what's Garoppolo
going to be in San Francisco? He's coming back? Is
he any good? We don't know right. Otherwise it's you know,
Sean Mullins, Okay, not nothing, not sing not the rockaby

(19:42):
rockabye Rockabyei. Yeah, Seattle you hated, although they they performed
pretty well. And then you gotta gotta ram it, ram
it all night. So so you're chasing obviously, but you
can't go anywhere. But after this disastrous season, Twitter at

(20:03):
how about a fresco? Mike gets swollen doumb The Jason
Smith Show with Mike Harmon and it's one of thirty
two Smith that's it's one of the Arizona is like,
are you really in the league? I mean, but otherwise,
what are you? You're the USC offensive coordinator? I mean, yeah,
you want to hang out at the beach and that's
great and I don't know how many times I'm scrolling

(20:23):
today and I got shirtless photos of Kingsbury or pictures
of right is a good looking and that's part of
the resent, people wondering, you know, you know, and that's
what look, that's what look. You know. The President Trump
loves when he's like got a central cast. He loves
when people look the part. Cliff Kingsbury certainly looks about

(20:44):
good looking guy, head coach. All right, eating man, tell
some more tickets. We're gonna get some suburban housewives in
the Chandler area to buy more tickets to go see
the Arizona Cardinals. But for usc right, for that job.
If you didn't want to be there, and it's clear,
all right, you signed at the Okay, this is fine.
There's glade receivers. I got a young quarterback I can
mentor Clay Hilton's a guy in an empty suit, all right,

(21:07):
and so any credit here I get. But you're also going,
all right, if the NFL is calling me, the NFL
is knocking on my door, I'll turn it down. I mean,
you can, you can bash the Cardinals. But like I've
seen so much derision on Cliffs Cliff Kingsburys like, look, man,
they help you the job. You're running signing as fast
as that pen comes out saying I got my job.

(21:30):
It's just look, this is such a bad year to
have an opening, But it also speaks to the old.
Unless you have a plan, why are you firing somebody,
especially with where we're going with a lot of these hirings,
both at the head position and at the coordinator position. Right, Hey,
Dirk Cutter, it would work pretty well a couple of
years ago when you're here, got somebody we can that. Look,

(21:52):
Todd Bowls will be a good defensive coordinator. Wherever he
winds up, Dirk Cutter will be fine. These guys who
were good in their jobs before can go back. They're
proven commodities and what they've done, they just haven't gotten it,
done it and as a head coach. But this is
just a real and of course the Jets have the
opening now. It's just a really bad year. I was
to need something, really, Kingsbury was gonna be a Sam Dug.

(22:14):
I really thought it was gonna. I think they're gonna
wind up hiring Matt Rule from from Baylor. Uh, but
it was. It was. It was him and Kingsbury's hearing
a lot about them, but I don't think the Jets
ever got so serious with Kingsbury. It's like, hey, we
like you. And then the Cardinals wanted to give money
and hire him, and the Jets are like, well, okay,
go do that. Well. Adam Schefter is still reporting that
Mike McCarthy doesn't want to be considered, isn't pursuing any

(22:35):
other vacancy than the New York that it's the only
job he wants. It's the only one he's interviewed for.
They've interviewed him twice. And I guarantee you he has
asked for the moon. I guarantee you. He said, I
want ten million dollars a year, and let's talk about power,
and maybe it does not have to be this year,
but after. And he's saying, you know what, because if
I'm gonna if I'm gonna do this this year, if
I'm not going to take a year off, and I'm

(22:57):
going to ask for the moon, and if they give
it to me, I'll go. If the Jets give him
what he wants, he will go. This is not a
case where hey, I need a life raft and oh
my goodness, I'm very lucky because the Jets is a
great opening. Because it is a great opening, because it's
New York, it's Sam Donald, it's a hundred million dollars
to spend. You can get back and be very good,
very quickly. But it is the Jets. But this is

(23:20):
the only job. There's no other one. So it's like,
all right, now I can wait and next year, who
knows what's open for me. Maybe I could get someplace house,
something else I might like a little bit better. Because
there's six or seven openings a year now, so this
is the only one I want. So I'm gonna ask
for a lot. And if the Jets come back and say, okay, yes,
we will give you ten million a year, you will
have personnel control or whatever you want, we'll give it

(23:40):
to you, then I'll take the job. I mean, that's it.
The Jets are gonna wind up with Mike McCarthy. You
know how I would have opened my interview with Mike
McCarthy though all the b roll from all the analysts,
who's like, yeah, when I played the league, that's where
they were running ten years ago. Hey, Mike, have you
updated any of this during your time off? Well, listen
to me a little less predicted. Listen, the Mike Shanahan
offense still works. I mean, plenty of teams in the place.

(24:05):
But look, that's where the Jets are gonna wind up.
McCarthy's their guy rule is their fallback guy. That that's
kind of where I think it looks right now. It's
why they didn't really pursue. They like Kingsbury, but you know,
Arizona made him the offer and the Jets weren't sure,
so he took that job. But that's like, I think
that's where that's gonna go. We have more on the
NFL coaching front, including why Baker Mayfield is not somebody

(24:30):
people want to coach. But coming up in one minute,
a big story from this weekend in the NFL. A
team won an incredibly heart stopping game and a team
lost an incredibly hard stopping game, not for the reasons
you think. We'll tell you what it is coming up
in a minute, but first it's deb cars with what's trending?
D you see what do you have? Oh? I have

(24:51):
your Jets staying away from my Matt rule. Please alright.
Another coaching news. Cliff Kingsbury headed to the Cardinals on
a four year contract, Buccaneers lockdown Bruce Arians for four years,
and he's gonna take Todd Bowles and Byron Leftwich to
Tampa Bay with him on his staff to finals for

(25:12):
the Brown's head coaching gig. According to the NFL Network,
Cleveland's own offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens and Vikings offensive coordinator
at Kevin Stefanski. Aps final college football pole of the
season is out Clemson number one Alabama to Ohio State,
Oklahoma and Notre Dame round out the top five. Ohio
State receiver kJ Hill announce he's gonna return to play

(25:33):
a senior season with the buck Eyes and Tuesday's Discover
Card key matchup, the Columbus Blue Jackets visit the Tampa
Bay Lightning and it was the Lightning with a four

to the Jason Smith Show in ten seconds. But first
a word from farmers. From a dog accidentally flooding a
living room to a dog taking a joy ride if
we've covered it, talk to farmers. We know a thing
or two because we've seen a thing or two. We
are farmers under my Farmer's Truck Fire Insurance Exchanges and

(26:39):
affiliates products unavailable in every state. Jason Smith, Mike Harmon
back to you. Well, wait one second, deb Carson before
you bring it back to us. Now, I want to
ask you one thing. Now, you you every night you
tell us what's treading, give us the updates? Will you
let us know everything that's going on in sports every
single night? So I want to give your daughter Chase
the chance to update us on what has been going on.

(27:03):
In her world today. Your daughter is at work with
you tonight, six years old. Can she get to the
microphone for a second. Let me see if I can
call her over here? Hang on one second, all right,
get her over here. Deb Carson brought her daughter Chase
to work today. Adorable girl. Sandwiches. Alright, I do have sandwiches.
I've got a fruit bar and she, of course, Jason
saw she scarved a Snickers bar out of our yea

(27:27):
over Okay, here you go. I won't be able to hear. Okay,
you guys are saying, so be kind, will you? Okay,
there's an indictment on us right there. I know you
too well. All right, Hey, Chase, it's Jason. Can you
hear me? All right? Remember me? I saw I met
you at the vending machine before and when you had
the snickers. Yeah. Remember I telled you vegetables were bad

(27:50):
and you should just have candy. Yeah? Was I right
or wrong? Wrong? Well, it's a good answer to give him.
Not the first person to tell him he's wrong either. Now.
Your mom does a job every night, and she updates
everybody across the whole country what's going on in the
world of sports. But I want you because you're here
with your mom tonight seeing what she does at work.

(28:11):
Tell me, update me, Tell everybody what happened to you
today at school? Tell me something that happened today. Give
us an update. What was the most fun thing that
happened to you today at school? Afternoon races? Oh? Yeah?
Why Why was it so much fun? Um? Because you

(28:32):
get to play with hula hoops and jumprop and you
know those are two things Jason hasn't done since he's
probably your age. I don't know how to hula hoop.
I really don't, you know. I do? I do, I do.
It's so fun. I can do it so long. That's awesome.

(28:53):
All right? Hey, what's more fun doing hula hoop or
being here with your mom? Being here with my mom?
Is that really the truth? Is that really the truth?
There you go, Chase, Hey, thanks so much for coming

(29:14):
on the radio with this. Chase, be good with your mom.
That's a very good to make sure you do have vegetables.
They are very important. All right? Stop that man about that.
Huh you lost your job, No, you just lost years.
It's gonna be, it's gonna be. It's gonna be The
Jason Smith Show with Phil Jackson's voice, Marty the Cat
and Chase. That's the show. Now, that's the show. We

(29:36):
gotta have a certain number of microphones. Well, you always
hit a point in a television or show where you
have the cute kid come in and replace the Yeah,
and there is a veteran you know, we need we
need somebody to be pregnant. And then they have a baby,
and then we introduced the kid next year except and
said the six years old. Uh so, thank you very
much to Chase Carson making her broadcast debut at the

(29:58):
age of six. Now this weekend, Cody Parkey is getting
a lot of blame for the missed field goal that
sent your Bears home and the Eagles onto the next
round in the playoffs. Yeah, I have one last addendum
to the Chase appearance. It goes back to that nepotism
and familial thing we were talking about in terms of

(30:19):
getting your brakes, so getting on a kind of helps.
Cody Parkey vilified many other failures by the Bears. Still
waiting to find out exactly, uh why Eddie Jackson was
in uniform and got to scan around for sixty minutes.
But that's beyond me. What if I were to tell

(30:40):
you it was not Cody Parky's fault. Well, like I said,
there's myriad problems. We can go not tape, we go
through the all twenties. Not Mitchell Drobiskie's fault. Oh he
had a terrible first was not the Bears defense's fault.
Did you not watch that final? No? No, you know
who's fault was? It was your fault as fault. We

(31:01):
made you know what, We have the audio already. We
made our picks last week of who was gonna win,
and I made the Bears my lock of the week
and everything was great. And then when I picked the Bears,
you decided to throw caution to the wind and say,
oh yeah, we're gonna win so bad. This is Mike
Harmon from Thursday Night putting negative karma out in the

(31:23):
universe about the Bears when we picked the game. The
Bears are not gonna lose this game at home. The
only thing I'm worried about Mike Rman Trabisky in a
four turnover day. If that doesn't happen, you are a
happy man, my friend, as you get ready for your
next game when some of it comes down and they
would be coming here to Los Angeles and the forecast
already in the low forties. How you like that? What

(31:46):
are you ready for that? What are you doing? What
are you doing? What you got to think about? You
already looking ahead? I can do that. I'm looking, but
I'm looking to do the welcoming here in the Los Angeles.
You know now changing my pick? Now, you're not going
to change what am I supposed to say? No, I
disagree with you. I do a pretty good impression to you.

(32:11):
It was your fault. Everything was fine until you stary.
Oh the weather's out here, the Bears are gonna be
playing here at l A. No that they were gonna
win that game until you That's fine. I'll wear it.
You want to tell me I'm the one that that
got the finger on the ball and and caused it
to double joint, that's fine. You want to tell me
that that's why Trabinsky struggled in the first half and
things went awry, And why on a fourth down play

(32:33):
your top rank defense couldn't get a stop and golden
torch wide open. No, you wanta you want to blame
that all on me? I'll take it. You know what
I got the shoulders, I'll be Atlas, bring it on.
It was it with Tony Atlas, it was it was
God saying I listened to the Jason Smith Show with
his best friend MC god. I hate when he keeps
saying that. But I listened to that show and I
heard the guy and he's a Bears fan. I can't

(32:54):
believe we would say that. All right, I gotta remind
me to to to watch that game on Sunday. And
then the game comes up on Sunday and Odd goes, boy,
this is an exciting game. Oh I forgot. I got
to get even with the Harmon guy. And there goes
a little breeze across the field as Cody park He's
kick just who was a little bit to the left
as a fingertip gets on it and it hits the

(33:16):
upright and it hits the crossbar and bounces off. That
was your fault. If it's my fault, it's my fault.
You know why. I do enjoy the fact that the
weather out here. Yeah, so a do you think about that,
Sean McVeigh have forty degrees, Yeah, it's gonna be bear
weather here. I've already got no shirt on. I mean,
that was you, well, I had taken off my shirt

(33:36):
and I was down to my my shorts and uh, well,
you know, you're just having a good time here, and
the guy goes studios. But the pick was the Bears
to win the game. So what did I say? I
want to be the welcoming part. I was looking forward
to taking my daughters to the game. It was gonna
be a nice bonding moment over some National Football leaguootball. Look,
football sometimes the enemy in the house when people work

(33:57):
in our business, are is it not? Where football keeps
you away and maybe moves year around a little bit. Yeah,
that's right here, it was football. We're gonna embrace football.
We're gonna embrace Mitchell Trabinsky and the Bears. And look,
Cody Parkey, come your fault go throughout the year? Why
did I tell you all year long? All these greatness,
great things of the offense, high high power and big

(34:19):
scoring at times, great defense. Tody Parkery was awful. But
here's the other thing. He's still already guaranteed three point
five million dollars for next year. And on him you
have to wear it like Nick Saban's gotta wear that
loss last night. And I get away with it by
telling the media that I love them. My closing statement,
I love you all. I know it's hard sometimes when

coming up next? We have the big news of the
day coming off the National Championship game last night. My goodness,

(35:23):
we got a story for you next on Fox. A
lot of times we don't wear pants. From a hot
air balloon landing on a car to a load of
concrete falling on one, we've covered it. Talk to farmers.
We know a thing or two because we've seen a
thing or two. We are farmers under written. My farmers

(35:45):
Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmen live from the Getic Studios. We'll have
more big NFL head coaching news coming up in ten minutes,
but the big college football news of the day coming
off of Clemson's blowout win over Alabama and the National
Championship game. Last night, the television ratings came in, and

(36:09):
you know, not that it's always an accurate representation of
the popularity of something, but I can always tell on
Twitter when a sporting event is a next level event
as far as people consuming it, and when it's just
here's your garden variety championship game that people are watching.
And I can tell last night was the garden variety
championship game that people were watching. And I could tell

(36:31):
that by by the the reach of the different topics
and how they trended. Every just you know, doing what
we do for the past few years, so I can
tell last it was your run of the mill. That's
what it was gonna be. Look, Clemson and Alabama. Clemson
doesn't have a real national presence. Alabama is the Evil Empire.
But wasn't enough. The overnight rating came in and it
was a fourteen point six across the multiple channel broadcast.

(36:54):
ESPN had the lowest rated title game in the five
year postseason system. Now, this still means they got twenty
five million people to watch, which is pretty bleep and good.
This is twelve million more than people who watch a
really good Thursday night NFL game that everybody looking at.
It's thirteen fifteen, sixteen million people. So just realize when
the NFL trumpets out how great they are on Thursday night,

(37:17):
this is something that you know by far and away
exceeds it. People just have to get used to the
new normal. College football is not a sport that is
going to grow bigger than it is now. College football
is hit its peak saturation. It's extremely popular and everybody

(37:38):
is gonna love their own teams. But the cross the board,
cross country love. You don't have those superstars that people
love on the East coast, hating the Midwest, love on
the West Coast, hate on the West Coast, love on
the East Coast, don't like in the middle. You don't
have that, So it's always going to be regionalized, and
that's been always that's been the big talk about college
football for a long time. Can you find a way

(38:00):
to nationalize it? It's hard. Certain national championship games are
going to be bigger if usc was involved. When you're
talking about the Los Angeles television market, you're talking about
something that's gonna blow it up because of the rock
Star propriety. But Alabama, Hey, people love watching Alabama. Clemson
is Clemson, and we've seen Alabama Clemson already and we've
seen it a couple of times. So you get a

(38:21):
little bit of fatigue on it. That's just the way
it is. College football just has to find the new
normal of how they're going to because people consume things
different ways. They consume it on multiple channels, they consume
it digitally. However, they're gonna do it. So you can't
look and say, Okay, let's keep getting You have to
realize that the times have changed and the college football
being so regionalized, you're only gonna get so much when

(38:43):
it comes to ratings, well, and you're gonna have a
percentage of this is people just tuning out because fatigue.
It's the same teams right, it's the same battle each
and every year. And even though you got what was
a pretty well contested game for a while, some early mistakes, weeks,
and as we talked about a lot last night, Clemson,
the tail of the tape and then the absolute bludgeoning,

(39:06):
even then, you're tuning out at some point if you're
just a casual fan, and especially if you're in the
Midwest or back East where you don't care about these
two teams. All right, this game is over. I'm out,
because what unless Nick Saban starts throwing headsets of people
or body slamming referees or as players, you're honest, and
watching the whole game is not something that people feel
the need to do anymore. And that's also what's lost.

(39:28):
This is that if the National Championship game starts at
eight thirty and someone said, you know what, I don't
need to watch the first half. I'll watch the second half,
or you know what, I'll watch the beginning of the game.
If it's good, I'll keep watching. If it stinks, I'll
go away and maybe come back later on. Nobody feels
they need to watch the whole game anymore, because of hey,
I can get the best part when I need well,
you can get an update on your Twitter account. Right,

(39:50):
Let's see what the what the score is? What are
people talking about? Is there's some compelling storyline and injury,
something that's changed the game. You know, by way of contrast,
the NBA Finals last year, there wasn't a game that
went over eighteen point five million, Right, So I know
it's the best to seven and it was non competitive,
but it's still the idea of it's still regional game

(40:12):
in many respects. No USC, no, Notre Dame, none of
those teams that you know have the adoptive fans that
that come in. You know, you you still trumped everything
else to interact. How about a fresco Mike andt Swollen
done The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike
harmon phone numbers eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox.
Just find that new normal college football coming up next,

(40:36):
Why No One really wants to coach Baker Mayfield and
more from the world of NFL Head Coaching News Fox.
All right, we'll get to the Browns in a minute,
because you know they're coaching searches. Now down to two people.
Vick fan Jesse is a phenomenal defensive coordinator and has
been one for the better part of two and a
half decades in the National Football League. It's never been

(40:59):
a head coach. Clearly, the guy knows both sides of
the football, but he's not an offensive coach. In a
year where everybody is looking for the next great offensive
mind to be a head coach, why can't you hire
a guy that's going to fix your defense right away?
Like you talked, we talk about Sean mcvagan Wade Phillips, Right,
Sean McVeigh is really the head coach of the offense,
Wade Phillips head coach of the defense. And it works great.

(41:21):
Do your thing right that you've proven that you can
do that. Waite Phillips wasn't a bad head coach. The
worst run on that then he then he should have.
But the fact is you brought in a guy with
the track record of being able to handle egos and
dominate that side of the ball. It would have worked
for the Jets with Rex Ryan being head coach of
the defense if he had a better offensive coordinator, but

(41:41):
he didn't. So Vic Fangio could come in remake this.
Broncos d say listen, I'll do this and I'll go
hire a young, up and coming offensive coordinator. Maybe there's
a whiz who's a quarterbacks coach somewhere that I want
to go get that. I think you're gonna be a
great offensive coordinator. This is your you can go do that.
It doesn't have to be a head coach, doesn't have

(42:02):
to be. We have a young guy as a head coach.
It just needs to make sure that you have somebody
in charge of that side of the football that is
your next great savant, your next great Hey, this guy
is gonna be a great offensive coordinator at some point
could be the next great head coach. But for now,
for me, this is what he's going to do. And
I can see vic Fangio succeeding immensely. The players love him.
Like I said, he's got that that. I just have

(42:23):
that feeling about him that he gets a shot to
finally do it. He's seen it done the right way
in the wrong way so many times with the course
of his career. He'd be a great pick, but he's
got to be able to say, Okay, now I need
my quote head coach of the offense to come in
with well, and that's just it. Wh who's that guy?
And I'm sure he's vetted a list, what was funny
leading up to the playoff lost against the Eagles, and

(42:45):
certainly some explaining to do, But the interview process was
I didn't I didn't work a minute for it. He
come in and ask me, whatever you want. I'm not preparing,
I'm not doing a spreadsheet, I'm not going through I'm
sure post loss he had to go back and do
some white board and grease board kind of stuff. But
before that, it was you want to come to Hollis
Hall and you want to talk to me. That's all
finding good, But beyond that, uh, meet it. I got

(43:08):
work to do. Twitter at how about a Fresca? Mike
had Swollen, done the Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon. So now let's get to the Browns,
all right. We find out tonight, according to Ian Rappaport
NFL Network, that the Browns are down to two candidates
to become their next head coach, current offensive coordinator Freddie

(43:30):
Kitchens and Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski. Their decision will
come down to be between one of these two at
some point soon. That's what we're hearing from Ian Rappaport.
So why is this, Why are the Browns winding up
with these two guys? When Mike McCarthy's name was out there,
Bruce arians was out there, All these names were out
there because coaching Baker Mayfield is not something that appeals

(43:57):
to the success full head coach. Coaching Baker Mayfield is
something that appeals to someone who needs a chance somewhere
to be a head coach and may not get it
anywhere else. Right, here's why Baker Mayfield already has killed
one coach killed Hugh Jackson. Right. Not that Hugh Jackson

(44:17):
was great, Hugh Jackson stunt. To be fair, Hugh Jackson
was bad. Hugh Jackson had really kind of run himself
up into an undenable position. I'm trying to choose my
words carefully. If Tyree was and get hurt, Tyrod Taylor
would still be starting for the brown That's the point.
Baker Mayson would have never seen the field last year.

(44:37):
That's terrible, But that's the unspoken part of this whole.
I don't understand why Baker Mayfield here Jack I said
and didn't and read the room and what he had.
But you have to realize that sometimes what's good for
you and what no one can blame you for is
not what's best for the Browns. Because what happened after

(44:57):
this is Hugh Jackson gets fired and then he's liking
posts on social media that called Hugh Jackson fake. He
wouldn't give him a hug after they played their first
game against each other, when they played the last week
of the season. Completes a long pass downfield, give that side.
I stare at Hugh Jackson. There's no question. And if
I'm a head coach like Mike McCarthy or Bruce Arians

(45:21):
or someone who can get a job someplace else, even
Matt Lafleur, anybody else, I see this job and I go,
do I really want this job? Because if I get
this job, I am signing up to be in the
Baker Mayfield Show. Baker Mayfield has already proven to be
the most powerful person in that organization. He's got one
coach fired already, and whatever it is, everybody is all
in behind him and his cock sure attitude and look,

(45:43):
Baker Mayfield brought the Browns two incredible heights this year
when he used to one win a year. Getting around
five hundred is a phenomenal accomplishment, and he is really good.
But if I'm ahead, I walk in going what am
I getting myself into? If we don't get along, what's
gonna happen? Am I gonna hear about something that he's
has on social media? Am I gonna have to worry
that if things don't go well, I'm gonna start getting blamed.

(46:05):
He's gonna say something snidey towards me in the press
if I get fired it doesn't work out, Is he
gonna light me up? Because I want to keep working
in the NFL. And if I get fired by the
Browns and things look awful and Baker Mayfield saying horrendous
things about me, I want to make sure I have
a job. Coaches, see how he's treating Hugh Jackson, and
whether or not Hugh Jackson deserved it, or was it

(46:26):
was right or wrong him to be fired is besides
the point? Because is that good? Always ask yourself, as
Bill Lumberg would say, is this good for the company?
And is what is his behavior towards Hugh Jackson good
to hire a head coach? Look at the two guys.
They're talking to the guy that got the battlefield promotion
to be a head coach and offense corner in Freddie Kitchens.

(46:46):
Guy got a battlefield promotion to be the new o
C in Minnesota in Stefanski when he got promoted midway
through the season. These are the guys that no one's
talking to to be a head coach. No one is
no one's but the Browns are because they're only gonna
get a chance here and they're young enough to come, Hey,
this is what we want. I'm gonna come in here. Yes, yes, yes,
I want to be a head coach in the NFL.
But you're coaching Baker Mayfield. And really, Baker Mayfield runs

(47:09):
the show here. Yes, yes, yes, I don't care. I
don't care. I don't care. I don't care. The Brown's
job is not something that people want. For that reason,
coaching him is very difficult. You look at Sam Dark
and not it's just Sam Donald, but you look at
coaching Sam Donald or Josh Rosen or Josh Allen. Right now,
there's only one opening now because Bruce, because well we

(47:30):
we saw Cliff Kingsbury gets that gig now in Arizona.
But you see why Mike McCarthy is only talking to
the Jets why Bruce Arians in the beginning said yeah,
I like to coach Cleveland. Then realize, oh wait a minute,
look at all the stuff that happened, look at the
bad side eye glance that we got to Hugh Jackson
and Bruce Arians, I'm sure realized. You know what, I
don't know that that kids for me. I don't know
that this is something that's gonna work, because if it

(47:50):
goes bad, I don't know that I can trust what's
gonna come out from him. Baker Mayfield has to realize
that while you can fly by the seat of your
pants and people love it and we love it, that's
not always good for the Browns. The Browns has not
been able to attract anybody to interview and what was
the whole thing. Of course, anybody who wants to be
a head coach, of course you want to interview with
the Browns. No, nobody wants an interview with them. And

(48:11):
that's the big reason why they see how Baker Mayfield
treated his head coach when things went bad. That scares
people away. But I think there's a couple of things
to it that are that are interesting, right, and we'll
never know the whole story and certainly the fact that
Baker Mayfield keeps going back at Hugh Jackson every opportunity.
There there's something else on the cutting room floor from
Hard Knocks and I want to see we we had
some bits, you know, and and I want to work

(48:34):
with Greg Williams. That one's been going around a bunch
from Baker Mayfield early and certainly the personality over the top,
and some folks are making Baker Mayfield the guy that
they want to hold up and say, all right, he's
everything that's wrong. No, you know what, there's you need
stars and you need villains, and he embraces his villainy.
The question I have is beyond Baker Mayfield wanting or

(48:55):
not wanting to work with him for potentially being cast
aside right, because you can't disprove the negative and whatever
whatever may not have occurred, right that if Baker Mayfield
decides he's gonna Gashee in the press, how are you
going to prove uh that he's well stretching the truth.
The other part of it, though, is on the Browns

(49:16):
organization that even though you brought in Dorsey and new
talent evaluators, that you're not getting people to come look
what's up with them, like on the evaluation side and
management side beyond has limon lawsuits and whatever else going
on in his other world and his other businesses. But
beyond that, why isn't this front office that was so

(49:40):
beloved for what they did in Kansas City and look
what they did with this team and put them in
a position to where, yes, they might have been doing
some bums slang along the way, including Hugh Jackson's Cincinnati
Bengles a couple of times to put the final nail
in the coffin of Marvin Lewis after sixteen years. But
the fact is, if you're not getting interviews and you're

(50:02):
these hotly regarded and widely you know, heralded talent evaluate
evaluators in front office people, what's that saying about them? Like?
What what else is going on behind the scenes on
that side of things? Because Baker, certainly he's a handful
and you've got to evaluate that's the biggest and what's
your long term But I want to know the other
part of that equation, right, and that they can't get

(50:24):
a call back from someone that they don't want to
work with them either, as much as they may not
want to work with Baker. Seemingly someone would have at
least opened the door to go talk to them, and
we got nothing that that says they've at least had
those vetting conversations except for the two that you mentioned,
you know, because that that's part when everybody is looking
for a job and they go, all right, what's the

(50:44):
one question I have about taking a job? Anytime you're
involved in a new job, Hey, I'm gonna take there's
always one question that you say, well, they really I
want them to answer this, because that's the one question
have Why should I leave here and take this job here?
And then you go in and you realize, okay, well,
well the guy interviewed with wasn't that nice to me,

(51:05):
or or I just didn't get a good vibe from
the people working there, didn't look that excited. And you
realize once you're going in, Okay, not only did I
have that question they needed to answer for me, but
the periphery stuff that I'm just kind of getting a
glimpse of, I'm not quite sure I like that. So
you know what, Yeah, maybe this isn't the job for me.
So that's the question. What's what else is in the
room that that people are like, because look, Baker's laid

(51:26):
it all out right, Yeah, I don't know that he's
got any other cards to show us at this point.
He's a red ass and that's the way it works.
So now it becomes the question of, all right, that
front office, how did they turn the decades long run
of being a laughing stock to being a destination Because

(51:46):
seemingly you've got a team, right, you got a running
back and Chubb right, he was ready to go. He
was a lot of good talent at the wide out callaway.
Looks like he could be a stud uh in joke,
who's fantastic? Just go on down on the line, you
and you've got talent, talent, evaluation, evaluation that seemingly is
next level, and you can compete in this division, right,

(52:09):
you can compete in this division now, especially if Pittsburgh
goes into a you know, six man uh fight in
a w w E pay per view before it's all
said and done. Uh, that you got a chance. So
what else is by you know, under the other rocks
that we're not finding yet? Twitter at how about a
Fresco Mike at Swollen Dome? Trust me, that Brown's job,

(52:29):
It's tough to want because there's a lot that goes
along with it, and Baker Mayfield ain't the big selling
point one shopping for car insurance, consider this. Geico has
been saving people money on car insurance for over seventy
five years. So if you're serious about savings, it's simple
go to Geico dot com. After seventy five years, they

Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with my best

(53:35):
friend Mike Harmon. And we're not gonna get anything out
of our next cast because all that's gonna be going
through his head is so already. I know we're at
a negative deficit, but we're gonna bring him on the
show anyway. Is there a positive deficit? Editor in chief
of Fans Side of dot Com, long time NFL insideer

(53:58):
Jason Cole Jake all, what's happening? I was gonna say
nothing at all. I just enjoy the music, and then
he made the great point, is there such a thing
as a positive deficits like bing bing? This is my
kind of show. We start with an ox and moron

(54:20):
we are. I'm sure politically someone's gonna come up with
determined coin positive deficit. You know, that's just a matter
of time with it right now if that doesn't come
out of this grouping of politicians. And I'm not saying
administration because I'm not going there, because both sides in
this in this battle are yeah, this is dumb versus dumber. Well,

(54:43):
we were calling for mean gene Oakerland. We needed needed
him tonight to reference to be the announcer to bring
us all together. This is like the Democrats are so dumb.
I mean, I'm a I'm a Democrat. Democrats are so dumb,
Like why even respond? If you lec after that show,
It's just like why did you even go? This is

(55:06):
like let it speak for itself. But no, you had
to say something. You had to do that. You had
to prove that Saturday Night Live when they did their
skin about the new Democrats and it was just the
same old people. Yeah, that's what you were. But let's
go on to sports, because that's far more pleasant sports. Sports. Sports. Hey,

(55:26):
do you have any pointers for me? Because tomorrow I'm
interviewing to be head coach of the Jets and they're
down to me. What can I tell them? They can
will them that you're not Todd Bowls all right, I'm
not that guy. All right? Great, that that's what you've
got going for you, Like that's that's the great part.

(55:47):
Like you know, when the Jets fans were so happy
that Todd Bowles was fired, I'm like, be careful what
you wish for here, Like, just really be careful about this. Now,
maybe they'll get McCarthy. McCarthy might be the best hire
out of this whole thing. Well, looks like the only
that's the only job he wants and he's the only
job he's interviewed for. The Jets of talking like something

(56:09):
happened in Cleveland. Something had to have happened in Cleveland's
for him to not get that job because Dorsey in
here too close and you can't tell me that Kitchens
is better than McCarthy. Something had to happen where ownership
came in and interfered in or something like, I I

(56:31):
gotta get them. Well, look, well, let me film me
throw this at because we talked about it a few
minutes ago. Is that beginning of the off season, it
was all the Brown's job is the best job, the best,
the best, the best, And then what happens. Anybody who's
a coach that successful, whether you're Mike McCarthy or Bruce
Arians sees how Baker Mayfield treated Hugh Jackson. Not that
Hugh Jackson deserved to keep the job. But I'll fight.

(56:53):
I'll fight with you on social media. I'll you know,
there'll be some things I'll run by you and stare
at you at after the game game, I won't shake
your hand, won't give you a hug and coaches realized
if things go bad, is that how he's going to
treat me? Is this what you am? I am? I
okay signing up for the Baker Mayfield Show. Come on
if you if things go bad and you're worried about

(57:14):
how you're gonna be treated by Baker Mayfield on the
way out, like you've got bigger problems, you shouldn't be
applying for the job, not even not even for that.
I mean when when you're playing, if you lose four
in a row, suddenly, what's gonna have? Baker Mayfield's unpredictable.
We don't know anything about the guy. He's unpredictable. We
know I'll hit you on the way out. And if
you want to coach, and I mean, what are we
like treating him like he's like the lead singer of

(57:37):
a of a metal band or something like that. All right,
which band? Which is it? The metal? This is the
lead singer the guys throwing out poison? Um? I mean
Metallica like which no, they're all Metallica is still together?
What James Headfield, they had their problems. I mean, we
watched some kind of mons because it wasn't James Headfield's fault. No,

(58:00):
you can't blame just for a second, I really consider
what you just said. Okay, that you know we're here's
gonna lose four in a a row. If you lose four
in a row in any at any time, everybody in
your locker room is going to be jumping ship and
your coaches are going to be like ticked off. That's
the way it is. The job of the head coach

(58:22):
is find a way to keep it together when you
go through that kind of valley. And Baker Mayfield was
just going off on Hugh Jackson because Hugh Jackson like immediately,
you know, left town and took the Cincinnati job, an
imposing job. I don't necessarily blame Baker Mayfield, although it's
a little silly because look, what would you expect, you know,

(58:43):
Hugh Jackson to do not work? So, I mean I
get it, but I don't have a big problem with
with what Baker Mayfield did. It's just a little bit childish,
But I don't think he's going to be the kind
of person who's gonna lead some insurrection against the coach
just because you go into a losing freak. Yeah, I
thought it, Well, that's not where we're looking at Yeah,
I argue with Jason to the point more in the

(59:05):
front office, whether there was a difference in philosophy with
with Dorsey and what have you that didn't work, or
again there's there's a history, there's a look, there's a
negative history between McCarthy and basically Elliott Wolves and to
a certain extent Alonzo Highsmith. They had their differences of

(59:25):
opinion and when um and when green Bay made good
Counstan and I'm always afraid when I say that name,
when they made him the g M a year ago,
there was a bit of a falling out and that's
why Walson high Smith left. And so there's some there's
some ill will there, but not enough that Dorsey wouldn't

(59:48):
pick McCarthy if there wasn't a big overwhelming reason why.
And that's why I say I do. But I'm really
curious as to whether the Haslems came in and said, hey,
we really got it roll in here with Kitchens and Williams,
and we understand that we can't keep grazy crazy Greg
Williams as our coach, um because he is crazy. Joe

(01:00:12):
de Vola, Uh yeah, but but but but why can't
they get a bigger. This is the job everybody wanted,
and it's it's Freddie Kitchens talking to and Kevin Stefanski.
You gotta promotion to be an OC at week twelve? Well,
why do you think that? Like and like Stefanski la Floor,
all those guys who are OC somewhere else, why aren't

(01:00:32):
they better than the O C that you had who
got Baker? Mayfield played really really well. I understand falling
back on Kitchens as your guy. McCarthy would have been
my number one, and then I understand why Kitchens would
be your fallback position in this case, like the only
other ones I would want. Like Jim Caldwell was interesting

(01:00:52):
to me because he had worked with Peyton Manning so
much and he actually their previo job at Stafford, and
I thought that that was kind of guy who could
in a locker room stand up to Mayfield when Mayfield
got a little bit out of control. But again, I
don't think that Mayfield as much of a problem as
he is just a young player who needs to be told, look,

(01:01:13):
these things are. What you're doing here is really really good.
You've got to temper this part of it. Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon talking with Jason Cole, editor in
chief at fansided dot com, long time NFL insider. Will
have more with him coming up in a minute as
we break down the hirings of Cliff Kingsbury Bruce Arians.
But first let's check in with Deb Carson and find
out what's trending d C. All right, Well, we've got

(01:01:35):
a few games still underway in the NBA, Clippers hosting
the Hornets l A with a fifty six fifty to
lead over Charlotte a minute thirty two to go in
the second quarter, two and a half to go second quarter,
and Golden State Warriors and Nicks are not at at
forty nine a piece. And finals from earlier to night
Kauai with thirty one as the Raptors beat the Hawks
one oh four one oh one, n gets one at

(01:01:57):
Miami one oh three ninety nine. Philly is now one
four in a row. The Sixers down the Wizards one fifteen,
and the Cavaliers have lost ten straight. Pacers beat the
Calves in Cleveland one one fifteen. College hoops stop rank
Duke one at wake Forest eight seven sixty five Number
three Tennessee with an eighties seven sixty three win at Missouri,

(01:02:19):
and we had a couple of upsets in the twenties
as far as ranked teams go, number twenty Iowa State
lost at Baylor seventy three seventy. Villanova upset twenty four
ranks St. John's seventies six, seventy one, while receiver kJ
Hill headed back to Ohio State for another senior another season.
His senior season had seventy receptions last year for the

(01:02:40):
buck Eyes NFL. Cliff Kingsbury will be the next head
coach of the Cardinals on a four year contract. Buccaneers
finalizing a four year deal with Bruce Arians to be
the next head coach. Matt Lafleur's deal to become the
head coach of the Packers also a four year contract
with the option for the fifth year for the team,
and Dirt Cutter is back in it Anta as the

(01:03:00):
offensive coordinator and Mike Malarkey now the Falcons tight ends coach.
We will be back to the Jason Smith Show in
ten seconds, But first a word from farmers. From a
dog accidentally flooding a living room to a dog taking

Jason and Mike back to you guys. Thank you. D
C Live from the Guy Go Studios. Jason Cole with
us here and Jason. We saw a couple of big
signing stays. We get away from the Browns for a
couple of minutes. We saw Cliff Kingsbury become the next
head coach of the Arizona Cardinals now Bruce Arians the
new head coach in Tampa Bay, and following him in

(01:03:46):
is Todd Bowles as defensive coordinator. Which move do you
like more, Cliff Kingsbury or the Bruce Areas Todd Bowls
Comba oh Arians and Bowls coach in the NFL? Right,
I mean it's as simple as that. Coach King is
very maybe a brilliant offensive mind, right, and he's obviously done.

(01:04:09):
Davis Webb speaks highly of him, obviously. Pat Mahomes did
some amazing things which got Baker Mayfield for a while. Right,
So he did some pretty impressive things, but he didn't win, right,
And that's kind of a problem. And here's the other
thing that I want to know, who's the offensive line coach?

(01:04:35):
Who does he know in the NFL? Who who's gonna
like tell him? By the way, you have to have
a real running game and a real blocking scheme. Otherwise
all that really cute stuff that you do doesn't actually work. Um,
you know, this is the little lesson we have to
make sure that we learned after Chip Kelly and that

(01:04:57):
whole odyssey through philadel and then in San Francisco, because
the one thing that Chip Kelly came into the league
not understanding is that if you can't block people, you're
not going to run at number one, number two. You
canna get your quarterbacks killed. And he did that very successfully. Yeah,

(01:05:17):
but Jason, as many times as we've heard people say
Ryan Fitzpatrick is a smart quarterback anything today but Cliff
Kingsbury groom, Patrick Mahomes. So of course he's going to
be great. Yeah, that's yeah, that's that's it is It
is it simply the Well, just like we said, well
they're the Browns, it's uh, well they're the Cardinals. Well

(01:05:42):
here's here's my problem. And lots people sit there and
well the second guess that, Josh, look, they they brought
in Walks last year. I remember not saying, well, it
is a great coach, because I have no idea the
person did that well. But they were always who's going
to be the next quarterback, Like they did a couple

(01:06:05):
of band aid contracts with Bradford and plenn and just
to make sure they were covered at the position, and
then in the draft they took Rosen. So the idea
was always, Okay, let's make sure we have you know,
we're going to get the new young quarterback to be
the franchise guy. And maybe I will be this year,
and maybe it'll be the next year, but we're gonna
have this guy. And then you get that quarterback in

(01:06:29):
Rows and he falls to you in the right place
in the draft, right because it's a quarterback deep draft,
and they realized you didn't have a coach who could
groom to the quarterback, and you've got really upset and
kicked off about it. And then you went and got
a guy with the groom a quarterback. Right, Well, what
kind of planning did you do in the first place

(01:06:51):
to not think, oh, we're not going to have to
make a transitioning here over the next year or two.
We better get a coach who knows how to groom
a quarterback. Like to me, the problem here was not
hiring Steve Wilks and it's not necessarily hiring Cliff Kingsbury.
It's the people who are doing the hiring boom. And

(01:07:14):
that was a lot of grooming. I mean, you mentioned
a lot of grooming in the last couple of minutes. Jason,
there's we're talking about Cliff games. I've had a couple
of cats. My wife had a couple of cats, so
you know, we've done the groom and saying well, and
it was about Cliff Kingsbury. Who's the first wine is
he's a friend of Sean McVeigh or look at his
hair and his beard. He's either Clifford the counter Clifford

(01:07:35):
the big red dog. Wait wait, wait, wait now, Cliff
Kingsbury is a good looking dude. I mean, you know,
he walks on the field. He could he could be
Clifford the big Dog. You're gonna get a lot of
suburban housewives and Chandler buying season tickets of the Cardinals
just to go get a glimpse of Cliff Kingsbury. Yeah,
that's a marketing strategy. You mean you're not gonna put

(01:07:58):
Jason Smith into charge of your your revenue streams. We're
gonna get your face out everywhere and make sure that
everybody knows that you. Make sure make sure you have
that five o'clock shadow working shift so you look just
right for the house was in Chandler. Hey, we're going
to Marley's. It's Dunk Cliff Kingsbury Night. If you can
dunk Cliff Kingsbury. We're gonna raise money for the Arizona Cardinals.

(01:08:21):
It's gonna be Tuesday at the Devil House with all
the loans here you go, and you'll be able to
go buy yourself a new offensive line to keep your
quarterback up right. Well, I mean again, that's the whole thing.
Like this, everybody falls in love with these like air
raid offenses that are basically elaborate high school offenses. I mean,
Kingsbury is running like a version of our Brile's offense,

(01:08:45):
and everybody forgets like our Briles drew that offense up
when he was Stephenville High School. That's really shift high
school offense. Everybody's like, oh, look, how sophisticated it was.
Like I interviewed Briles with that he goes, Oh, yeah,
we just had a bunch of little kids, and we
you know, we couldn't really compete unless we just you know,

(01:09:07):
we decided to air it out and play wide open. Yeah,
that's a philosophy that's gonna work in the NFL. If
you tell me that was a jet story, I believe
that that wasn't the jet. Um. Hey, last, what do
you see? What do you hire? Listen, we're gonna get
Matt rule. When when Mike McCray is I want fifteen
million a year and I want control, They're gonna say
that rule will come to our head. Coach. Hey, the

(01:09:29):
Broncos are down to Vic Fangio and Mike munchak Am
I the why not just hired Mike Shannihan Like it
over with? Stop? But am I? You know I I
texted um always like two years ago and I said,
just hire Kyle, just do it and you know, stop
stop with the whole thing. Hire Kyle, And he's like

(01:09:52):
one and got vance Joseph and then two years later
he's back here. It's like, just go call Mike, Mike
does what you want him to do. Stopped like stop
with the whole thing that you know, I can't have
him in the office because I mean, stop it with
the pettiness. Just hire Mike and be done with it. Well, unfortunately, though,

(01:10:14):
without him, it's down to Vic Fangio and Mike Munchak.
Am I the only with Gary? With Gary Kubiak as
the offensive courtnell and and look, you know, am I crap?
But he's never been a head coach. But I just
have this gut feeling that if Vic Fangio gets the job,
he's going to do really well. You know the experience
he's had as being the head coach of the defense. Look,

(01:10:35):
we don't have to get a Shawn McVeigh the other way.
Have you ever met Fangio. I've seen him, but I
have never met him. Have you ever talked to him?
That's a man. What's the matter. What's the matter with
Vic Fangio. He's a great he's a great and defensive coach.

(01:10:58):
He knows how to stand in front of a defensive group.
I'm not sure he knows how to stand up in
front of the offensive guys and tell them, Hey, this
is what we're gonna do. But does he Hey he
doesn't have to though. If you if you can have
a shop pointing no, no, no, no, no, stopped to
stop yourself. This is this is semi serious. You do

(01:11:20):
not like this is It's not it's semi serious. But
let me semi serious voice. We can't ever do real serious,
and usually we do completely superfluous just out there, you know.
Usually we're talking about me, you know, having had a
few too many beers outside of the bar in Boston

(01:11:41):
and worried about the woman who's about to like burn
cigarette holes in my eyes, and that to you, are
you going back for more with the chargers in town?
I might, I might, I might. I don't even remember
I had some many beers. I don't even remember the bar.
So anyways, at a certain point, you have to be

(01:12:04):
able to stand in front of the entire group, and
you have to have to be able to bring that
entire group together and make them believe in your vision.
I'm not sure that Fangio knows how to do that now.
I hope so, but I don't know that he can
do that. I have my doubts. I know for a
fact Mike Shanahan can do that. And yeah, Mike Shanahan

(01:12:27):
might be a little bit older, but just higher him,
he knows what he Jason called the stuck on Twitter
at Jason coul sixty two. If you learn anything from
the past few minutes, it's the Shanahan family. Yes, Vic Fangio,
whatever whatever old Grudgy has is now crupped up again.
I like, you know, not at all something. I like

(01:12:52):
him very much. I just have to have a big fear.
Do you remember Joe Filden in uh when they do
what's that stupid show that hard Knocks, Hard Knocks? When
he was picking up all the trash off the field,
you know, when well waited to do that, but when
he would stand in front of the whole group and
you know, like they would show snippets of his you know,
lock of his speeches in front of either the locker room,

(01:13:16):
you know, in the big room, and he's just looking
to go and not happening. He's a really, really nice man.
Joe Filman is an incredibly nice man, the editor in
chief of fansided dot com and a man who was
wrong at some point in his life by both Vic
Fangio and Joe Filman. This is the Jacon Cole airing

(01:13:45):
of the grievances on the show that he did make
a crazy Joe de Vola reference. Next week, we'll get
to Jeff fisher Is. There's no question about it. He's
complete in my mouth. Cool boy, bye, it's the best

(01:14:10):
twenty minutes of his week when he comes down with us.
Jason call uh coming coming up next. Oh boy, do
I have a great conspiracy theory for you Fox. From

my farmer's truck fire insurance exchanges and affiliates products unavailable

(01:14:56):
with my best friend Mike Harmen, live from Geico Studios,
and let me throw a conspiracy theory at you like
those you know? Well, this week has all been about
so far college football National Championship, plus now the NFL
head coaching circus that's going on. We'll get to the

(01:15:18):
big hires today. Coming up in ten minutes, Cliff Kingsbury's
head coach in Arizona, Bruce Arians, and Tampa. The name
Josh McDaniels has been floated out and now floated back
in talk to the Green Bay Packers about the head
coaching job, which was kind of shocking, right, So I
threw it out there. You know, I told just the
last year the Patriots dynasty. But what if something happened

(01:15:44):
behind the scenes, Because it's obvious, Josh McDaniels he would
have taken the Indianapolis coach job last year if he
wasn't promised to be the next head coach in New
England because he would have gone in working with Andrew Luck.
He would have gotten all the credit he was hiring
his coaches and then decided, oh, no, I want to
stay in New England. Nobody does that unless you get
a promise. So hey, when Bill Belichick retires a year

(01:16:07):
or two years, whatever it is, I'll do it. So
why is he interviewed with the Green Bay Packers now
when that was the story was just him and the Packers.
I said, what if Bill Belichick had said, you know,
I'm feeling pretty good, maybe I'm not gonna step down
in a year or two. Yeah, I go out an
interview right now. That could have been the story, and
that Jock McDaniels now, for some reason, after turning down

(01:16:28):
working with Andrew Luck now is out there talking to
the Packers Packers Hire Matt Lafleur, and Josh McDaniels has
now officially pulled his name from consideration for any other team. Well,
maybe he just decided that Aaron Rodgers with a diva
like Baker Mayfield. Oh, I'll take right back at you,
Josh McDaniel says, quote the book is closed. It's a

(01:16:50):
humbling experience to have an opportunity to interview with anybody
for that position. Now I'm gonna come back to the
Pageots in two thousand and nineteen. Obviously the coach vacancies
are dwindling. Now he declined an opportunity to talk to
the Cincinnati Bengals. Obviously he's not gonna talk to the
Jets because Bill Belichick would have excommunicated forever from Patriots Kingdom.

(01:17:11):
But now let me throw this theory at you, now
that he has gone out interviewed and now said no,
I'm going back to New England. All right, what if
this was Josh McDaniels saying, you know, I don't know
about this whole timeline thing. I really want to be
the head coach soon. So maybe I'll go interview maybe

(01:17:32):
help show that I have a little bit of leverage too.
I'm gonna go talk now. Obviously the Pagriots. You know,
you get permission and people go. But I'm gonna go
talk unless you're usc and Lane Swatt. Don't talk to anybody,
you know, even if it's a case of okay, you
know what, I'm gonna go talk to them because Aaron Rodgers.
Aaron Rodgers, they said, but this maybe Josh McDaniels saying,
you know what, I still could go. I'm not gonna

(01:17:53):
sit and let this go forever. You know, I'm not
gonna sit every year. I'm not gonna do with Mike
Hopkins and Jim Bayom at Syracuse going eventually, guy's gonna retire.
I don't want to be a fifty five year old
first time head coach. And now here's McDaniel showing a
little bit of all. You know, people want me a
little bit. Let's accelerate that timeline a little bit. Let's
accelerate that timeline and now maybe it's one more year

(01:18:13):
for Bill Belichick. This is one more year and then
it's gonna be Josh McNeil, or at least you try
to push whatever leverage you think you have, especially if
you've vetted the opportunity in Green Bay and decided and
maybe you just would rather keep working with Tom Brady
and you've got enough of Aaron Rodgers and talking to
people there. I don't know. I mean, there's a million things.

(01:18:35):
But when we look at the would be death of
the Patriots dynasty, weren't they still a top five offense
this year? Even if Rob Dronkowski couldn't walk, they had
no Brandon Cooks uh and all these other issues. As
I said, they still put up some numbers. This year
is the last year of the Patriots dynasty. I think
you're presuming death. This year is the last year of

course of the hour. Get to the big news in
a couple of seconds. But quick update right now, uh
seven minutes to go at the article and Golden State
trying to hold on the Knicks giving the Warriors all

(01:20:25):
they can handle. It is eighty to seventy nine. Oh
wait sorry, oh it's eighty to fifty nine. The Warriors
with the lead over the Knicks. Now, the Knicks were
in the game in the high forties. They were and
did that, uh at my signal unleash hell thing? Yeah
it was and then it got ugly. It was like

(01:20:47):
it was like, yeah, I mean that was pretty cool
for good. You were very excited. You were you were
jacked up about it here in the Geico studio. There's
no question about it. But the Knicks are now getting
boat raced by the Warriors. On the same day that
reports come out that maybe the Knicks might not be

(01:21:08):
able to keep Kristops porzingis that the San Antonio Spurs,
according to many sources, are a team very interested in
going after Porzingis. But they got a lot of players
that are owed a lot of money. So I don't
know how they make it work. But it's the Spurs.
They'll figure out a way. And on Twitter, when there
is a couple of websites that put out today, hey

(01:21:29):
san Antonio, has you know interested Kristops Porzingis? He blocked
those Twitter accounts. Quote blocked those twitters. We're a audio
medium here, Jason is doing his hands doesn't really work
that well. You we need to we need to get

(01:21:50):
some finger extensions for you or something finger extended like that.
See that what you know, that's what happened our Senio Hall.
That's why it's such a big starr. Yet that big
long finger he could point at everybody. That finger was
like a wand wow. I mean look what it did
for decutumba. Well. Yeah, that and fake phone calls and
you're extending and being angry and sending out public service
if you get to I was ACKed. But again air quotes,

(01:22:17):
he accidentally blocked the people who tweeted out at him, Hey,
the Spurs have interest in Porzingis Porzingis. Then said he
was sorry and unblocked them on Twitter. So why do
you have to draw attention to that? If you're a nick, right,
and someone says no, you block him, right, And that's it.

(01:22:39):
No I'm a nick, But no I blocked them and
unblocked them and say I'm sorry. Oh look, I'll tell
you this, and this is the truth about the Knicks.
Everything's gonna change for them in the off season. They
just have to get there. They just have to get
to the point where the off season hits and Durant
or Kyrie or whoever else, you know what, it's now

(01:23:01):
safe to go to New York. Yeah they stink, but
things are now working back up Fizdale's a coach everybody likes,
and I want to go there and be a star.
You still have James Dolan to do. Just have to
get to the off season. And now for the more
than Nicks lose, the worst it is for porzingis because
the Knicks are losing and they're not even competitive in

(01:23:22):
these games. They're not competitive in games against teams that
they should be beating at that point. I mean, that's
that's a tall task, though. Teams that they should be beating,
that's a very short list, right, and they're not even
close with those teams. Like they beat the Lakers with
without Lebron James. They beat the Lakers, but there's other two. Look,

(01:23:43):
they should have beat the Hawks. They can't beat the
Hawks lost to the Hawks last week. We might have
been tender night, they might have been fired up. They
lost to the Suns by eighteen. The Sons are two
weeks ago, a lot of guards, and they're an up
and coming team and they played with seven That's why
they beat the Knicks. Look the or than Nick's lose,
the worse it gets the war, the harder it is

(01:24:03):
for porzingis to say, boy, do I really want to
buy in. You know, Fizdale is a good coach, but man,
we just cannot win games. We're gonna be the worst
team in the NBA. Yes they're tanking, but boy, things
are really bad. But trust me, they just have to
get to the off season. I know it's crazy right
now with Porzingis and all this, and why does he
have to even acknowledge blocking not blocking people on Twitter

(01:24:25):
if he's really a nick. But they just have to
get there. It's like, I feel like that's all I'd
be said, Just just get I know it's gonna be hard,
just get to the off season, and then things are
going to be different because then better players are gonna
come to New York. They're gonna team up and show up.
It's gonna happen. Now. If it doesn't, then then you say,
then Porzingis can say, Okay, now I'm done. I'm not

(01:24:46):
gonna sign. I'm gonna go someplace else because obviously no
one's coming to play with me. No one's coming here,
and I can't buy this future. But I would just
keep telling him, just wait till the off season, just wait,
come back. If you can come back this year, that's awesome,
but just wait but this whole time, Porzingis and the
Knicks have been at arms length, which is why it
could go either way, because Porzingis could decide no, no, no,

(01:25:07):
I'm gonna stay because I like being a star in
New York, or you know what, this is just miserable
and I'm gonna go someplace else. Just wait till the
things are gonna change dramatically in the off season. I
like your hope. Hope is a dangerous thing. It's the
best of things. I got to sell something. I do
like that you're trying to do the cell job. I mean,
the one thing you can always aspire to. And this

(01:25:28):
is for everybody out there listening here. We thank you
for taking a few minutes of us. Happy New Year,
all that fun stuff. I think we've hit the end
of being able to say that, so I waved to
you and thank you for listening to us. We all
want a moment like Ryan Saunders has after the Timberwolves
won on Wikipedia and has his birthday. He's an American
basketball coach and former player. He's the only undefeated head

(01:25:51):
coach in the NBA. That's what you want. You want
to have that one line in your obituary in your
everyday living. That's identifies you as a champion, like Cliff
Kingsbury undefeated his USC offensive. Think about it, what aisy
Cardinals dot Com put out, here's his resume and we've
hired him as coach. The first line was he's a

(01:26:12):
friend of Sean McVeigh, and then they later deleted that
first line off the website, realizing that was probably pretty dumb,
as all the memes of I met Sean McVeigh hire
me started going around. I mean, that was everybody's line
on on all the hiring sites, man, everywhere you probably
everybody's LinkedIn on indeed dot com. That became you know,

(01:26:33):
I don't. I've done a lot of good things, no
matter what my job is, chef, uh, whatever other walk
of life you've got, I met or may have had
a two second conversation or or walked past Sean McVeigh,
and that became the resume builder today. I mean, I've
got three interviews tomorrow. Good luck. You need my help

(01:26:53):
with Anything's Dolphins, they're not the Jets aren't gonna hire you.
Come on, hire me before they hire you. No, I've
been the Uh I'm stealing Den Carson's negative realist Twitter out,
how about a Fresco Mike gets swollen dome The Jason
Smith Show with Mike Carmon. But speaking of Cliff Kingsbury,

(01:27:14):
he gets the job today as head coach of the
Arizona Cardinals. Kingsbury, who did not really succeed all that
much at Texas Tech despite the fact he had Patrick Mahomes,
was trying to restart his coaching career by taking the
O C job at USC and instead fails upward by

(01:27:35):
the Cardinals saying no, no, no, we don't need you
to do that. We'll take you to be our head coach.
I don't know that I could sum it up any
better than Jason Lockin for A CBS Sports NFL insider
who was on the show with us last night, and
we talked about Cliff Kingsbury potentially getting an NFL job,
And this is what Jason LOCKINFORA said Mahomes and he

(01:27:58):
couldn't like he didn't play the Significant Bowl game, you
know what I mean? Like, what about missing here? But
Holmes comes into the NFL andliterates it. He's unstoppable. This
guy had him in college against kids. What did I
miting here? Where are the undefeated teason. Where are the
record books? Where was the seventi touchdowns? What? He's supposed

(01:28:21):
to get a job because he coaches, but they couldn't
be teenagers with him. The Death Star got blown up
by a bunch of bleep and da No, he was salty.
I mean, look go through their their record in sixteen though,
sixty nine points, sixty eight points, fifty nine points, fifty
five points, thirty eight and then a down game against

(01:28:41):
West Virginia UH sixty six, fifty nine, lost to Oklahoma,
four win over TCU, thirty seven against Texas, and a
loss forty four against Oklahoma State in the loss fifty
four and a win over Baylor, and then they got
blown out by Iowa State. That's the one that's curious.
Another fifty six. They want him to coach an offense.

(01:29:02):
You didn't have to pretend to know defense. You hire
someone else to do that and then take them blame
when they can't get it done. You might hire Patrick Peterson. Here,
here's my new coordinator. I get that you want the
next great, young, hot offensive mind in the NFL to throw. Well,
we can talk about being hot. People want hot people,

(01:29:23):
you know, people want hot guys. People want hot coaches.
That's why we're in the chair four hours. And no
one wants cold people. No one wants to not hot people.
You know, if you're on hot or not dot com,
no one's clicking on the not and hiring them as
a head coach that was once given really bad odds
as a fantasy. Uh. You know if I were on

(01:29:44):
the problem, Yeah, I'm sorry about that, buddy. That's okay.
They were hateful. It's my only appearance on dead Spin
to date. But this is a bad off season to
be in the market for a head coach because everybody
wants the great off pensive minds, but they're just not there.
And when you want to dip into the college ranks,

(01:30:06):
you're hiring somebody who most likely is not going to
work out. You You look back, how many coaches have
come from college football and one big in the last
ten years, how many, I mean only a couple really
have shown up and one big after coming. That just
doesn't happen anymore, you know, you and nobody else. No,

(01:30:29):
it's it's it's a it's a much different game than
it used to be. Look at the guys that showed up.
Nick Saban couldn't win. Butch Davis couldn't win. Bobby Petrino
couldn't win. All right, Chip Kelly couldn't win. Spurry or
could None of these guys could win. And all of
these play. All of these coaches had much better resumes
than Cliff Kingsbury. Yes, Cliff Kingsbury is a guy that's

(01:30:50):
known as being an offensive type of gurup. But you
are talking about a guy that did not succeed in
college football and now you're gonna put him in charge
of an NFL team. And I'm sorry, but you can't.
You can't cut away so much that you're gonna say, Okay, yeah,
I'm fine with Cliff Kingsbury. The bottom line is the
guy didn't win, and now you're asking to do something

(01:31:12):
that he's never done and try to win. We talked
about Dabbo Sweeney last night, said, look, is he ever
gonna be somebody that goes to the NFL. Probably not.
He's made for the college game. You're saying, Dabo Sweeney,
who has turned Clemson into a mini dynasty, may not
be a guy that can coach in the NFL. But
Cliff Kingsbury can. I mean, you look at what your
resume is, what should get you to that next grade

(01:31:35):
should be and it doesn't have that. He doesn't Cliff
Kingsbury doesn't have that rest And that's in any walk
of life. In theory, what you've built should be the
thing that gets you promoted. And then well we can
go through all of the different sociological uh studies and
everything else to figure out why all the myriad reasons
that doesn't happen. Uh. And certainly when you look at

(01:31:57):
Cliff Kingsbury you mentioned, um, you he's high that sometimes
you gotta look the part and be and fit the profile,
right the old Johnny Bravo show My Age Brady Bunch reference,
uh and fit the suit. So certainly you have that
along the way as as well. So when you you're
talking about Cliff Kingsbury getting this job, you know, going

(01:32:19):
to Arizona, they sometimes can't get out of their own way. Right.
Did Steve Wilkes need to be fired? Was it his
fault that you built an inferior roster? No, you basically
gave him a bad bill of goods and said go
get it. But you talk about Dabbo Sweeney and whether
he'd work in the NFL he talks about community, talks
very upfront about his faith and about his family. Right,

(01:32:42):
guys given him wet Willie during uh postgame interviews. Whatever.
It's the same conversation we had about Pat Fitzgerald of
Northwestern a week ago as as they turned down any
advances from the Green Bay Packers. That's the only place
his personality and what he's built as a personal brand
would work in the NFL because it's all about the
community and family and being part of that Green Bay

(01:33:05):
cycle and what they are right and building a place
in that community. That's what he's done in Evanston. That's
what he's a lifer to this point at Northwestern, having
been a player and a coach. So for Dabo Sweeney,
it's the same thing with Cliff Kingsbury. He didn't even
unpack his bags here in southern California, might have had
some suntan lotion out, gotten some rays and now he's gone.

(01:33:27):
He's gone. He's off to Arizona. And that tepid response
when he gave that high I'm here to be your coach,
that's just terrible. That's just terrible. Let it perfect. It's Arizonia,
It's Arizona. Whatever whatever happens happens. We'll move on. We'll
have another guy in two years. Wow. Look at that

story in the world demanded it. It's coming up next Fox.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific. From a car landing on a roof to
a car landing in the pool, we've covered it. Talk
to farmers. We know a thing or two because we've
seen a thing or two. We are farmers under written

(01:34:37):
my Farmers truck fire insurance exchanges and affiliates products unavailable
in every state. You know, I gotta be honest with you,
Mike Carmen, But it's not quite the John Wick versus
Common fight from John Wick two. Yeah, but you know,
the big climactic battle between Freddy Krueger and Jason Vorhees
and Freddy versus Jason, it's pretty good. It's pretty entertaining.

(01:34:58):
It's more over the up and there's no bulletproof suits
like like John Wick has, but it's pretty entertaining. Well,
it's almost as if it were run by our buddies
working on the Sharknado series. I mean, what how much
stuff can we just throw into this scene? I mean,
I think Jason Vorgis gets hit with a rocket at
some point and and walks away from it. Rocket. It's
kind of a big deal. I mean that that's what

(01:35:19):
makes you a legendary mythical movie monster. On our TVs
right now, a couple of really crazy dangerous things going on.
One is Freddie versus Jason. The other is Warriors and
the Knicks. Hurting my eyes right now, between the bright
yellow uniforms against the bright yellow court. Seventy Golden State

(01:35:42):
has a lead over the Knicks, and still plenty of
time left in this one. Oh yeah, plenty of time
for them to get to what one thirty This will
be one thirty three to ninety two, Okay, that's what
I'm gonna say. Well, you're gonna score on the twenty
two points, yeah, because the Golden State will score very fast. Okay, yeah,
they'll score major shots though. Uh we got hit eleven

(01:36:02):
shots in ten minutes. Now we can we can hit it.
We get a shot a minute, we can do that.
We get that's all right, we can hit a shot
a minute. Let's see if there let me see if
there's any live couple. We're gonna be threes. I'm sure
that will happen. And the bonus we can we can
do it. I'm sure. So I like that. We can

(01:36:24):
do it. You can do it. You got live action
right now. You got the Warriors minus twenty five and
a half in an over under a h to right now,
we're at six. All right, let's see can we get
it out one thirty three. The biggest story in the

(01:36:50):
world tonight, without a doubt, is President Trump's speech about
securing money for the border wall he wants who separate
the United States from Mexico to keep terrorists out right.
Highly anticipated first address from the Oval Office eight plus minutes,
followed by the response from Schumer and Pelosi as they

(01:37:14):
battled for control of one podium and not to get
political tonight, because look, there's there's people that agree and
think there should be a wall, and there's people who
think there shouldn't be a wall. But you know who
we needed tonight. Who we need? We needed Mean Gene Oakerland,
the late Mean Gene open. You know there's there's something
to that. I could see it in a million different ways.
We really I saw people on Twitter wanted to call
from earlier, and we really needed Mean Gene because he

(01:37:37):
would have brought what we needed to this. I can
imagine starting the whole thing. Colin and if you will,
Oh my, it's the President of the United States. Harry comes,
come again, all the can we have a song please
for the president? And he introduces President Trump, and let's
Trump talk about why we need a wall. The border
wall would very quickly pay for itself. The cost of

(01:37:58):
illegal drugs exceed needs five billion dollars a year, vastly
more than the five point seven billion dollars we have
requested from Congress. The wall will also be paid for
indirectly by the great new trade deal we have made
with Mexico. Senator Chuck Schumer, who you will be hearing

(01:38:21):
from later tonight, has repeatedly supported a physical barrier in
the past, along with many other Democrats. Oh my goodness,
there it is all President Trump, landing a haymaker saying, Hey,
who you're gonna hear from? Is gonna say, well, you
have the wall. Oh at, look who's making their way
now and coming in now? Oh my goodness, it is

(01:38:42):
Chuck Schumer. Chuck, you just saw what the president said.
How do you respond in advance of what's going on?
No president should pound the table and demand he gets
his way, or else the government shuts down, hurting millions
of Americans who are treated as leverage. Tonight and throughout
this debate and throughout his presidency, President Trump has appealed

(01:39:05):
to fear, not facts, division not unity, Fear and facts.
In the squared circle and now tag team partner, Nancy Pelosi,
what do you have to add to this? I appreciate
the opportunity to speak directly to the American people tonight
about how we can end this shutdown and meet the

(01:39:25):
needs of the American people. Sadly, much of what we
heard from President Trump throughout this sense of shutdown has
been full of misinformation and even Alice, February one, Madison
Square Garden. Oh it's President Trump, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer,

(01:39:46):
don't miss it. Coming up next, Tito Santanta puts his
Intercontinental Belt on the line against special Delivery Jones. Right here,
a special Saturday morning extravaganza. I don't forget Tonight runnington
Steel is on ten o'clock PM on many of these
stations across the country, followed by reruns up the love
Boat into your local news. This is the WWF. I

(01:40:07):
like the way you think, Yeah, no, you know, come
on in if you will. I think we needed a
little more excitement from each of our three participants here.
If we're gonna really rev up and get this, you
know how show sold out. I mean there's no question.
I mean from President Trump, I want he's a w
w E Hall of Famer. Yes I have that, you
can trump that in. But more smoke, right, I could

(01:40:33):
have used more of the w w E camera angles
from the from the ground up to make the biggerybody
look more imposing. Need more of a live audience. More
just from a pure theatricality standpoint, I mean Schumer and
Pelosi standing behind the same podium with a bevy of
flags behind that's like we gotta have some grand entrances

(01:40:53):
and and maybe some theme music behind them as we go.
President Trump, you also need you also needed the story
he's behind who they were, like, you needed to hear Trump.
And then as part of the whole big you know
that you needed like a tom Ronaldi Originia on howton
Nancy Pelosi's journey from being a young girl to her
power that she has right now. And it's a whole

(01:41:15):
like type thing. Maybe you throw it to Nick or
Tony Chivani. Yes, Bishop comes in and does a very
impactful three minute rant as it goes, profiling somebody along
the way. But for President Trump, the next line, uh,
y'all support it until I ran And that would have

(01:41:37):
been the big entry for Schumer. Yeah, they all supported
a barrier until I ran for president. And then you
cue the music and looking around like the what's happening?
I don't understand, like you know, like it's not part
of the script. I don't what's happening. I don't know?
And then him come Pelosi and Schumer. But he did
a terrible job of selling it to man. It's like

(01:41:59):
till monitor own it's a pittance of the five hundred
billion dollars of illegal drugs that are flowing into our country.
Now I need five point seven billion. That's they They
are keeping us away. They're keeping us from raising that
money and building this wall. And then mean Gene is
standing there already shaking with the microphone like he would do,

(01:42:20):
and Macho man would yell at him and go, oh yeah,
Madison Square Court means Geno Gurlin, I'll tell you what's
gonna happen. Yeah. Well, and then you got that pot
and collected the rhetoric, the pounding of the table. Almost
Paul Bearer or one of our calmer boys, you know,

(01:42:44):
one of those, like one of the managers. That was
just low key. I have the ashes of all the
politicians who have posed Trump before. That's a hot take
in the urn, right, Bong bong. Then Joe Biden comes out,
he's underto You can't say bong bong in the middle
of this debate because we're talking about drugs coming here, alright?

(01:43:08):
Do I do like Joe Biden as the undertaker? That's
pretty good? Good? When a Syracuse T shirt, what is
the the the varsity the letterman Mike Rotundo and Rick
Steiner coming in in the sing lets. You know, Mike
Rotundo is from Syracuse. There you go. He still, yeah,

(01:43:29):
we're gonna look it up. Look about that. Otherwise we're
gonna have to have five minutes on. But I really,
I really, Joe Biden is the undertaker. He's sixty years
old out of St. Pete. Alright, alright, Mike Rotundo still
with us? So that would have been R Shyster. Oh yeah,

(01:43:49):
Erwin R shots are pretty good. Now. I think I
once checked into a hotel as the name Irwin R. Shyster.
There you go, I think so twitter right, how about
a frescop Mike gets swollen down the Jason Smith Show
with my best friend Mike Harmon. See, it could have
been much more entertaining if that's how they would have
treated it could have happened. We could hit politics fun,
could have had Burman doing the interviews and get d J.

(01:44:11):
Now we're going to get Nancy Pelosi and then Schumer.
We'll see him soon. DJ. We could get that well
if we get Burman involved, I mean it's always I mean,
there's a lot of talk he's gonna have a much
bigger presence. Back back back, back to the West Wing

(01:44:31):
where it's Kelly Anne Conway or the Highway on CNN.
D J nicely done the way to get him back
in whenever you can shoehorn Chris Berman into a story
man here, pretty good. I mean maybe Jim Acosta would
have been pretty good as mean Gene Oakland's you know
in the late mean Gene Oakland's role tonight, because certainly

(01:44:53):
he stirs up the White House and we could just
get back behind the microphone, like because he used to host,
would have made it about himself, and I don't know
that would have worked, okay, because then that means someone
else is hitting him with a chair cold like character. Sure,
oh stone cold this political process, Oh that's um stone

(01:45:14):
cold would probably be Oh that that would be Mike Pence.
Mike pens would be stone cold. There go, yeah, that's
how it comes. So there we go making making sports
and politics fun. I just picturing Finden is the undertaker.
It's a serric. That's the best. Yeah. Way do we
kick your asta our night? Clemson? Yeah, get a preview

(01:45:36):
for the fall and football? Well, they have had two
days of partying national title game. They're they're not rallying
there's no fans Twitter and out about a Fresca. Mike
hat swollen down the Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmen
coming up in a minute. The We have some late

while we've gotten to a lot of the big coaching news, tonight,
we'll get to Bruce Arians getting the gig in Tampa,
which I really lie coming up in a little bit.
According to Adam Schefter, this about a little bit less

(01:48:06):
than a hour or so ago, Mike McCarthy is interested
in only one head coaching job. That job is as
the head coach of the New York Jets. Jet is it?
That is all Mike McCarthy wants. The only job he
wants is the Jets job. There's been a lot in

(01:48:29):
the media the past few days that Mike McCarthy really
doesn't want to coach this year, wants to sit out,
wait and wait till next year where maybe other openings
are up for him. He takes a year off, helps
him health wise, you know, normal stuff you would hear.
So why are we hearing McCarthy to the Jets and
he also wants to sit out of here? I guarantee

(01:48:51):
you this is what's going on. Mike McCarthy knows that
he wants the job with the Jets. He wants to
coach Sam Donald. He likes having a hundred million dollars
in salary cap room. He likes being a coach in
New York. He likes being bounced from Green Bay and
landing in a bigger market at the same time, be
an off for a year and sifting through and making

(01:49:12):
sure it's a job I really want is very appealing,
and collecting a big pile of it, and be undefeated
and watched two hundred and fifty six great National Football
League games, show up on television, do some interviews here
and there. But Mike McCarthy, this is where it's at

(01:49:33):
right now. I guarantee you. He has told the Jets, Okay,
here's what I want. I want ten million a year,
and I want to have some kind of personnel power control,
whether it's something that he gets now and it's control
over some personnel, or it's something that will happen in
a year if the Jets fire Mike mccagnuan. Whatever it is,
he is asking for the moon, and if the Jets
give it to him, he'll take the job because it's

(01:49:55):
a situation that he wants. If he doesn't get it,
he'll easily sit out. It's a win wins situation for
him right now. That's where the Jets are at. The
Jets have let the other people they're interested in, supposedly
interested in, take jobs someplace else. Cliffe Kingsbury's with the
Arizona Cardinals. The Jets are the point right now where
it's Mike McCarthy, and if he says no, they'll pivot

(01:50:15):
to either Matt Rule or Monken. They talked to both
of them and they like both of them. And that
Rule is a guy that's New York guy, even though
he's coaching Bailori's turn around two programs. That's kind of
where the Jets are sitting right now. But McCarthy's the guy.
And I've said from the beginning, Mike McCarthy's the guy
that the Jets need because they need someone to come
in who's going to take over the football program, and

(01:50:38):
they don't have that. It's it's it's hard to say,
here's an up and coming offensive coordinator. It's hard enough
to say, right here's a guy that's done well in college,
but now in the pros, they want a CEO. They
want someone who's like I have the offensive system I
have all the answers you need and I will run this.
And Mike mccagnan is the GM, but he's kind of
like a Raiders GM, where really, okay, the power doesn't

(01:50:59):
really reside with him, resides with the head coach. That's
where we're at, and that's eventually what the Jets are
going to do, because they're gonna sit back and say,
all right, it's McCarthy, or we take a chance with
one of these guys. What are we doing. We'll give
McCarthy an extra couple of million dollars. The Jets have
always shown they will spend money if they need to.
So he's gonna wind up getting that job. That's the
job he wants because Sam Donald's the guy who is

(01:51:22):
very attractive to coach. Right, we'll get into next hour
why Baker Mayfield is not the right guy to coach
if you're a coach looking for a job. But Sam
Donald's that guy. Josh Allen would be that guy too,
and potentially Josh Rosen and Cliff Kingsbury is gonna find
that out. But really that's where Mike McCarthy is. He
holds the cards and he's asked for a lot and
I know the Jets are. Eventually they're gonna blink and say, okay, yeah,

(01:51:44):
what are we doing? They introduced they interviewed him two days.
Two days they spent with Mike McCarthy. They're doing their
due diligence because just in case we find Matt Rulan
fall in love with where we find Monk and we
fall in love with him. You know these all right,
we're gonna go talk. But now the situation has done.
The Jets have talked to all the guy they're gonna
talk to. Now they'll make their decision and if they're smart,
they will Okay, here you go, Mike McCarthy, this is

(01:52:06):
what you want. That's what we're gonna give you, will
give you. You need to come in be our head coach,
turn us around in a season, and he will. Well,
at this point, you go in and you find the
guy that's gonna right the ship. And yes, there's that.
You can say that here because you have your quarterback.
You know that anybody that watched two minutes of film
on Sam Donald knows this kid can play. So now
let's go figure out the rest of that offense and

(01:52:28):
how the best bring him along and whatever rule and
Monk in whatever else you've watched Mike McCarthy do it
year after year, and Aaron Rodgers is a fantastic football player.
I think the hyperbole and the LoveFest finally hit hit
two skids as this team struggled in eighteen. There's a
little salty didn't make all the throws like he had.

(01:52:51):
His completion percentage was down, and people still try to
make excuses for him for most of the year. But
McCarthy moves on and they had great success together. Now
you go find a couple more component parts, find a
solidification to your running game. Go get a true number
one wide receiver and see what you can do. And
and let a guy who has a decade of real

(01:53:14):
history of success go after the crown. Now that the
Patriots are in whatever stage there, Tom Brady's not paying
for playing forever. Whatever this year is. I knew you
were gonna whether it's this year, two years from now, whatever.
He Eventually he's gone and the opportunity runs right because
Miami they're circling again. Buffalo is interesting. Bran McDermott. I

(01:53:39):
love watching Josh Allen. You know, you look at what
they had with Foster and Za Jones. Once they started
ripping it down field a little bit, figure out the
run game there. They could be interesting, but they're not
rolling gonna rule and dominate. The division defense was strong, certainly,
but for the Jets, the time is now right. That
window is is about to open, and you need to

(01:54:00):
be able to kick the door open, the window down,
whatever the case is, whatever the analogy is, Yeah, the
idea being the Division is finally there in your potential,
no longer the Dan Marino or Tom Brady world. You
can actually go win, So go find the guy to
do it. Twitter at how about a fresh cup? Mike
gets swollen down The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmen.

(01:54:21):
Coming up next. A big game in the National Football
League this weekend was a thriller for the winning team
and an absolute heartbreaker for the losing team. What is
responsible for the outcome of that game? It's not what
you think. We have the answer coming up next Fox.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith

(01:54:42):
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart
Radio app. From a hotter balloon landing on a car
to a load of concrete falling on one. We've covered it.
Talk to farmers. We know a thing or two. Because
we've seen a thing or two. We are farmers fault
under written. My farmers took fire insurance exchanges that affiliates

(01:55:04):
products unavailable in every state I met. You think it
was Cody Parkey's fault why the Bears lost the Eagles
this week? I think it was Vic Fangio's defense that
let me doubt Rabinsky not finishing drives in the first half,
struggling against that Philadelphia defense, had a couple of balls
that probably should have gone the other way, couldn't finish
off drives, and and slow uh painful uh death for me. Nope,

(01:55:29):
all those reasons are wrong. All those reasons the Bears lost.
The absence Lovely Smith's fault. Not Lovey Smith's fault. Was
it John Fox's not Dave Juanstat's mustache's fault. It's not
Curtis Conway's fault. You leave Curtis Conway along Vince Evans's fault.
I once rock to Vince Evans Jersey like no other,

(01:55:50):
just like I did that Elvis Onesie thing that I
just showed you the old photo of h Vince Evans
played to lose about sixty seven years old. Yeah, he
was still fast, still had a cannon for an arm.
We're talking about this game still two days after it happened,
and Cody Parkey's missed field goal that doinked off the
upright in the crossbar after he had hit the upright

(01:56:12):
many times during the season. It is not Cody Parky's fault.
It is not fault. It's not my fault. It's not
Vic Fangio's fault. You know who's fault it is. It's
my fault. It is your fault. When we picked this
game last Thursday, I gave it as my lock of
the week. Bears are gonna win. No way Philadelphia wins

(01:56:35):
this game. And then you decided to get all cocky
and arrogant throw bad karma in the air because you
decided you couldn't just pick the game. You started honking
up like this game was already over and you were
looking forward to the bears next game, which was gonna
be here in l A. This is from last Thursday
night as Mike and I picked this game, and this

(01:56:58):
is where Harmon puts that negative karma in the air
for the Bears. The Bears are not gonna lose this
game at home. The only thing I'm worried about my
Karman Trabinsky in a four turnover day. If that doesn't happen,
you are a happy man, my friend. As you get
ready for your next game, some of it comes down
and they would be coming here to Los Angeles and

(01:57:19):
the forecast already in the low forties. How you like that?
What are you ready for that? What are you doing?
What are you doing? What you got the book about you? Already?
Looking ahead? I can do that. I'm looking, but I'm
looking to do the welcoming You're to Los Angeles. You
know what, Now I'm changing my pick. Now you're not
going to change the world. What am I supposed to say? No,

(01:57:42):
I disagree with you. That's a pretty good impression I have.
That was pretty good. I like the way that flew out.
That's completely your fault. That's completely you know what. I'll
own it. If people in the city of Chicago at
Swollen Dome listening on w c k G, HI, everybody
you want, you want to bring it the hometown folks

(01:58:02):
want to put up the billboards and bus signs and
blame me and you want to send me money in
Venmo like you did for go to Barkey. I'm in,
let's go. Everything was fine, and then you had to say, yeah,
next week, I was gonna do the game analysis, but
then I got I got caught up in the thoughts
of being able to share a playoff experience with my daughter. Dude,

(01:58:22):
you were already looking at the weather for next week.
I needed to know if I needed to go buy
a heavier coats and some knit caps like the one
I'm wearing the night that says badass on it. You
are wearing a nit and it does. But no, but
it's almost like Samuel L. Jackson Wallers. It's the captain
says badass on it all. I'll get you that right there.

(01:58:45):
You didn't need to do that. You could have waited.
You had all week. You could have bought a heavy
coat if he needed to, could have gone into Goodwill
got a heavy coat for five dollars. You'd have been
all said no, no, no. You wanted to honk it
up and walk around and strut and sometimes you want
to do a little bit of pe cock. And what
happened when you got the quads and happened No no
what happened. It should have never come down to Cody,

(01:59:07):
for you shouldn't score. You were clearly the better team,
and it was God saying. You know, I like that
Jason Smith show with Mike car but he keeps saying
his best friend. I can't stand that. I you know,
but that Harmon guy, he's really out of control. I
gotta teach me a little lesson. You know what, when
it comes down to a big field goal, I'm just
gonna give him a little bit of a little bit

(01:59:29):
of a breeze. So when Parky kicks it and it
was a little bit to the left and maybe an
eagle gets a hand on it, and you know what,
just for grins and giggles, I'm gonna have it hit
both the upright and I'm gonna have it hit the crossbar.
I can't have an upright crossbar upright. And then now
I was having hit the up right, then the Crows
were letting back out again. All for Harmon. It's your fault.
You didn't you see there was a building that had

(01:59:51):
an animation at the top of it. In between their
other ads and stuff. It was an animated football bouncing
off and right. Uh and and the crossbar. Yeah no,
it was in Philadelphia. Has taught me. The Pico Building
in uh Philadelphia went after me as well. Hey, I'll
bring bring the hate. I'll take it Twitter at how

(02:00:13):
about a fresco Mike at Swollen Dome coming up next?

So with all the news going on with NFL head coach,

(02:01:16):
and we'll get to the moves we like the most.
Coming off of the day Today, we had a couple
of big hirings, crazy ones. Cliff Kingsbury has a job
in the NFL, proving that hey, the U s C.
O C job is a big stepping stone job. You
can get to the NFL being you you have to
win a game, and you didn't get to the NFL
and lose the game. That's you know, that's just that's

(02:01:39):
you know, the way Cliff Kingsbury goes from being fired
in Texas Tech because he couldn't win when he had
Patrick ma Holmes to hey, I'm gonna remake myself as
O C at USC, but nope, I'm jumping to the NFL.
I mean, that's not even fair. That's an American success story.
That Disney movie right there? Are you kidding me? That's everything,
that's the American dream. He fell upward without having to

(02:02:02):
do anything but show up in waves. He was on
the USC campus. Is it Gosling? Is it Kingsbury? And
then we don't even know if he ever actually signed
a contract except for something that Lynn Swan thought he
suddenly was in charge now and that he was the
captain now and said, you can't talk to anybody else.
You're ours. Okay, you gotta stop with the I'm the captain.
Now think this Cliff, kids, it's important. Cliff Kingsbury getting

(02:02:24):
this job is the equivalent of the guys who on
YouTube make millions of dollars by opening child's toys. Yes,
but we need to figure out how to do that.
We're far more entertaining than those dopes. There's no reason
why those people should be famous. But where is the
white Cliff Kingsbury this job. That's the point is we
need to figure out where there are people to build
to make millions of dollars by opening toys. To me,

(02:02:47):
it's a shiny object. Give me your money. I do,
I do admit. If you watch the right person open
the presence, it is very hypnotic. There's one guy that
sounds like he's got a head coal and it's a
little bit of an accent, and you hear exactly and
you could see the packaging of this is very It's
a tight packaging on the back because you open it.

(02:03:10):
I I can't, I can't do it, but it's I
listened to the guy's voice, I'm like, this is great. See.
I think if you do a good job of it,
you know and and not that you're gonna script it.
But let's face it, we're in the slide over. I mean,
there's ways to say things that you open a package
shows people on YouTube have done more than Cliff Kingsbury
and they've gotten to get more. Cliff Kingsbury scored a
lot of points, he did impressed a lot of people,

(02:03:32):
and he's available for a head coaching job at the
right time, available at the right time. And that's the
bottom line. Yes, but there's so many people be grudging
going after him and attacking you know what. The reality is,
you're a coordinator for a moment for USC now thing's happened. Yes,
it's the recruiting period. I know that sucks and that

(02:03:54):
that's hard. The reality is the show called you. The show.
Someone tapped on the elbow and said it's time. It's time, Cliff.
We got a four year deal for you. You could
be one of thirty two to join this fraternity. You
want to end? What do you say? No, No, I
want to go want to go hang saying yes, I
want to go hang out with he actually got the offer. Well,

(02:04:15):
but look at the recruiting class of coaches. You know,
here's it's not a strong recruiting class in the in
this crop of coaches that are hanging around out there.
Either you open those transformers toys pretty good, here's a
million dollars because you know, I mean, that's what we
know what we need to start doing that here, let's
build some lego sets. That's right, whoa, whoa, that was ahead.
That was Gwyneth's sorry spoiler, that was Gwyneth Paltrow's head.

(02:04:37):
All right, that's a little bit differently. Well, now in
the movie it was it was. It was okay, well
they allude to it, but I mean, they're not lying
to you. That was it was their head was in
the box that I mean, it wasn't really her head
because it's a movie, but it was her in the movie.
They didn't lie. To stop trying to point out an

(02:04:57):
alternate ending to say, I'm not I'm say you are.
You know it's about it's a television That's what it was.
Now you really took it left turn there slide is
absolutely embrace it for all it's worth. To kick things off,
Let's talk a little bit about the browns Head coaching

(02:05:21):
opening now, because at the beginning of the off season,
it was, oh my god, this is the best opening.
Why wouldn't you want Why would you want the Jets
job when you could coach Baker Mayfield? And now, what
are the Browns down to? Their o C? Freddie Kitchens
and Kevin Stefanski who got a battlefield promotion mid season
to be the o C of the Vikings. Where are
all the big names that wanted this job? Right? Where

(02:05:43):
are they all? Where's Bruce Arians who said, oh, the
Brown's job is really what I want, said this about
a month ago, job is the one I want. Where's
Mike McCarthy, whose interview was my seriously put on hold?
Where are all the big names? The big names aren't there,
and you're talking about your o C or another o
C who nobody else is talking to. Nobody else is

(02:06:05):
interviewing Freddie Kitchens, nobody else is interviewing Kevin Stefanski, nobody
else's why are you down to these guys? Because coaching
Baker Mayfield is a scary proposition, right, think about this.
If you're a coach, what have you seen this year?
Baker Mayfield clearly has become the most powerful voice in
the Browns organization. Right, Brown's ownership is crazy, and Baker

(02:06:27):
Mayfield has become that voice. Talented, got him to seven wins,
was awesome season. The guy's good. The guy's got schureve
and personality, and he's what we need in the media
to be able to talk about a guy like that.
He's breaking the mold for quarterbacks. But what's good for
Baker Mayfield isn't always good for the Browns. It's the
big lesson Bill Lumberg taught us all in office space,

(02:06:48):
always ask yourself is this good for the company? So
what happened this year? Baker Mayfield killed his coach, right,
Hugh Jackson. And this is not saying that Hugh Jackson
deserved to stay, because Hugh Jackson was a bad head coach.
If Tyrod Taylor didn't get hurt, he would have been
the start of the quarterback all year later. Hugh Jackson
was a bad coach. But what happened after Hugh got

(02:07:11):
fired Baker Mayfield on social media liking and talking about
how Hugh Jackson was fake with the team when they
got to play the Browns. When the Browns got to
play the Bengals, and Hugh Jackson taken a job on
Marvin Lewis's staff. Baker Mayfield wouldn't hug you at the
end of the game. We talked about that at the
end of the season, Brown's and the Bengals final week,

(02:07:32):
big long pass, Baker Mayfield runs down the field staring
Daggers at Hugh Jackson. These are all storylines that we
picked up on, and Baker Mayfield went out of his
way to antagonize his former coach. Right now, just think
about this from not as a from the perspective of yeah,
but but Hugh Jackson stuff. Yes, Hugh Jackson was bad.
And I can't tell you in the locker room if

(02:07:54):
what Hugh Jackson said was popular or not popular. Right,
This is stuff Baker Mayfield knows when he says he
was being fake in the locker room. But what I
do know is this is that other coaches who want
to go coach Cleveland and coach Baker Mayfield or be
interested are gonna see that and go, oh boy, he
really did not treat Hugh Jackson very well. There. What's

(02:08:14):
gonna happen if we lose three or four games in
a row. Is Baker Mayfield gonna turn on me? Is
suddenly he gonna turn into Aaron Rodgers where I'm running
my own plays because he knows he's powerful. He's already
killed one coach. Coaches want to be able to go
into a situation knowing this is my team. And instead,
in Cleveland, you're signing up for the Baker Mayfield Show.
And if you're a coach, you realize that, boy, it

(02:08:37):
didn't go well. And Baker Mayfield just lit up Hugh
Jackson for the majority of the season. Why because he
didn't like the fact that Hugh Jackson went to coach
the Bengals. H the guy got fired. Okay, the guy
got fired. What are expecting to do? Not take a
job the guy was fired. Baker Mayfield needs to realize
that you can play this. Hey, me against the world.
I'm a cock sure, arrogant guy, and I don't care

(02:08:59):
what I you know, I don't care what people think
about what I do, but sometimes it reflects on you.
And if I'm Mike McCarthy, Bruce Arians all these guys,
I go, oh, I don't want that to happen to me,
and that might scare me off. And that's one of
the reasons why you're seeing Cleveland choosing between two offensive
coordinators who nobody else is talking to about being a
head coach because you're gonna get the young guys say, oh, yes,

(02:09:22):
it's the any job they can get. Why Cliff Kingsbury
said yes to the Arizona Cardinals, Oh you're gonna give
me a job in the NFL. It's you say all
the time, Mike, it's one of thirty two. So I'll
take this job. Yes, of course I want this job
coach in the NFL. Well, you're kind of coaching Baker Mayfield.
Things going don't go right? You don't know because Mayfield
is an unknown, he's a wild card. You know how
he's gonna react. His act was really good this year

(02:09:44):
because the Browns won. And yes they only won seven games,
but when you're winning one game a year, winning seven
games and staying on the periphery of playoff contention is awesome.
But now the stakes are raised. What's gonna happen if
they lose three four in a row? How is Baker
Mayfield going to react? Is? Is Is that going to get old?
Is something? You're gonna hear something, and he's gonna say
something that he doesn't agree with the coaching staff. And

(02:10:04):
now suddenly the head coach is answering questions are you
getting along with Baker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield is a dangerous
persona to come in and coach. And this is why
the big names. You're not seeing the big names when
the beginning of off season was oh, Baker maybe of
course Baker may Full over all these guys, Why does
Mike McCarthy want to coach Sam Donald? You have to
worry about Sam Donald saying something on social media, liking
something on Instagram, or or lighten him up if he

(02:10:26):
doesn't see like how things are going. This is why
you're seeing these guys and Mike McCarthy go to a
job like the Jets. With that, then you're seeing people
line up to go coach Baker Mayfield. I wonder if
to some degree and what Baker is a big personality,
and he certainly embraced the villain status and uh, he
was great for our business. And you've certainly got those

(02:10:47):
that have gone out of their way to try to
take a baseball bat to him at every turn. He's
a cry baby, he was whatever else like, get over yourselves,
look in the mirror for a moment, uh, and think
about every time you try to have a chip on
your shoulder because of something you didn't get or something
that you got passed over for, or someone in your
organization didn't like. Uh. And clearly he had a great

(02:11:08):
distaste for Hugh Jackson. Whatever the origin story is there. Uh,
certainly there's a lot of that called him fake. We
know that. So you know the curiosity going back to
pre hard knocks and everything else. What what I want
to know is the relationship and reputation everything with with

(02:11:28):
Dorsey and the front office. Right, we talked with Jason
Cole a little bit earlier. Uh, he and McCarthy worked
together in Green Bay. Didn't end well, right, didn't end well.
So the question becomes could they co exist? Did they
have different philosophies on what to do with Baker Mayfield
going forward and what that offense should look like? But

(02:11:49):
is there enough that would stop him? Well but but
but enough of the misgivings that you've got the haslms
over the top and that and that there's the wild
Guard and everything. I've said it before, And then Jason
cold came over the top and he said exactly the
same thing. Everybody's coming over the top of your world.
We talked to wrestling. We got gene and one person
can come over the top. You can't come over the top.

(02:12:09):
And then somebody else come over the top, comes over
the top the top. No, it's not how it No,
one person comes over the top. That's the Then we
watch over the Top with Sylvester Stallone, the Great arm
Wrestling Movie. I put my head on backwards. I become
a different person. That is right. But you have the
the idea that the haslems are there and to some

(02:12:29):
degree finally having success on the field. It's enough to
say if this doesn't fit I e. McCarthy, arians whoever
it is, it isn't completely in line. If it ain't broke,
don't fix it. Kitchens and this guy got along. Well,
we're winning games, we're being talked about positively on the field,
and nobody's going into my trials and tribulations and anything else.

(02:12:53):
So the idea of being potentially that you say, all right,
I'm endorsing and pushing that we stay stat his quo
because maker Baker Mayfield and this offense worked with Kitchens
and a half season, so why not give it a
year or two and then push forward if if it
goes south, and if it does, then while we'll see

(02:13:15):
I guess really what Baker Mayfield's all about. If it
were to believe that he's going to continue to wag
his finger and go w W E villain in every turn,
if it was that big an opening and people would
be coming out of the woodwork, it's still Coach Baker Mayfield.
They may love him. Jim Harball would be leaving Michigan
to go Coach Baker Mayfield that he's got a chance.

sing that hole song. Seven Lonely Days, Fox Sports Radio,
The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon
and a dozen towns Ago. And just to give you
a quick peek inside our studio. You know, I'm sure
if you've heard Fox Sports Radio the last couple of week,

(02:15:34):
Sure we got four brand new, big spanking new TVs.
Everybody that would listen. It's awesome. I stood on the
street corner. Hey, we have the original Heaven Can Wait
is on one of the TVs, and and two big
things to come across. As you ever watch the old
Heaven Can Wait, you realize how cool the old blue
and white uniforms of the Rams were. And two the

(02:15:56):
seamen Warren beat is playing football with the Butlers. I've
seen the movie fifty times. Makes me still left everything chuckled.
Butlers in that area where it's like we're all rich
people live there, the big fir trees lining like fifty
yards down the down either side. It's awesome. Now we're
hanging out at the stadium and having a good old time.
I'm real sorry about that Mr Farnsworth out when they

(02:16:17):
start letting him get sacked every single time. Ram it
all day and ram it all night. Uh eight seven
seven ninety nine. On Fox. I'm Jason, He's Mike, And
today was a big day in the NFL as we
saw some head coaching openings filled and others become closer
to becoming filled. We've talked about Cliff Kingsbury and the

(02:16:38):
craziness that led the Arizona Cardinals to say, you know
you're our guy because we can'tet anybody else. You know who.
We love you, Cliff. But two moves that I really like,
One that's happened and one that will has at least
a fifty percent chance of happening. I love Bruce Arians

(02:16:58):
taking over in Tampa Bay and the late breaking news
on on Tuesday night that he's gonna bring Todd Bowls
with him to become his defensive coordinator. This is the
absolute perfect hire for Tampa Bay. They want to get
the most out of Jamis Winston, who's in a make
or break year. Bruce Arians is exactly what they need.

(02:17:18):
His attitude, his offensive acumen. He'll get the most out
of Winston. Tampa Bay could be that big bounce back
team because they do have the weapons down there, and
we've seen Bruce Arians turn programs. He turned the Bleep
and Cardinals back around. We've seen him do it. Bruce
Arians is a really good head coach. He got a

(02:17:38):
clean bill of health. They asked him to make sure
to take a a physical. So the doctor and Bruce Arians,
he is a phenomenal member. We talked about him a
few weeks ago when the Packers fired Mike McCarthy and
what did I say, So, Bruce Arians is the guy.
Bruce Arians is the guy. He's got to go to
green Bay. Green Bay would be the perfect spot for him.

(02:17:59):
He's got personality, he's a player's coach, he's got everything.
He's got the offensive acumen. He's probably he's gonna do
great things in Tampa right now. This is a huge day.
On Sunday, Dan Buyer and I had a chance to
talk to a D. D. Kinka Walla UH before the game,
and she was she was reporting live from from Baltimore, UH,
and the idea of Bruce Arians came up because we

(02:18:20):
were talking about all the chaos in Pittsburgh and everything
that she's been on the top of this whole time.
And she relayed an anecdote a quick story someone I
told us, like the only guy in coaching history that
can have a seven words sent in, six of which
were profanities, and it would make perfect sense. That's Bruce
Arians no question to think about it. And bright Orange one.

(02:18:49):
It's gonna make me have to buy a big bright orange.
I think I feel like I need one. But you
look at Jamis Winston. You look at all those offensive
weapons that are there. You've got a great receiving corps.
You'll figure out how to get rid of DeShawn Jackson
and let him go do what he wants to do.
But you've got a lot of offensive firepower. But to
harness their evans makes the Pro Bowl. Now as guys

(02:19:11):
start bowing out, you look at Humphries was a solid
receiver for them. Godwin was great in stretches, especially when
Jackson wasn't on the field. He took those routes and
performed quite nicely. You got the dual tight end set.
Figure out your running back position. Maybe Ronald Jones comes
back from injury and he's ready to go defensively Todd Bowls.

(02:19:32):
That's what he does. You know, he cobbled together some
decent defensive efforts from let's call it what it is,
lackluster UH personnel these past couple of years. So now
he goes back to that full time. Tod Bowls is
a good defensive coach. Bruce Arians is a good offensive coach.
This is gonna work, This is gonna work at it. Right,
You got Carolina with Cam Newton and whatever he's got

(02:19:55):
left in that body as he gets beat up. You're
looking at Atlanta going back to the well, bringing Dirk
Cutter back right and uh hiring a retread uh coordinator
and tight ends coach Malarkey goes there, uh, and you're
looking at an opportunity perhaps in Division two to make

(02:20:16):
some noise. New Orleans isn't going away, but Drew Brees
isn't getting any younger. Right, That's one of the great
storylines for this playoff run that we're in and heading
into the weekend. It's all right, he's thirty nine, forty
years old. How much longer is there for him to
to rule in New Orleans? So yeah, even if it's
a short term experiment and you always have to be

(02:20:38):
monitoring Bruce Arian's health, you take the shot that you
can harness everything that's there from from all of those weapons.
Twitter out, how about a fresca Mike had swollen down
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon. Now, the other
move that I really really like if it happens, and
it's a fifty fifty move right now, because we found
out late tonight the Broncos are down to either Vic Angio,

(02:21:00):
Bears defensive coordinator, or Mike Munschak as their new head coach.
Munschak has been a head coach before. Fangio is sixty
years old, has been a phenomenal defensive coordinator for the
better part of two decades. I don't know if I'm crazy,
but I feel like if they hire Vic Fangio, he
will be really good for Denver Number one. You know

(02:21:20):
how great he's gonna make that defense again. He's got
so many playmakers and the guy's done it everywhere. No,
he's never been a head coach, but if you can
say being a head coach of the offense and the
head coach of the defense can work from the offensive
perspective like we do with Sean McVeigh and Wade Phillips. Right,
Wade Phillips wasn't a great head coach, phenomenal defensive coordinator,

(02:21:41):
but he was a better head coach, and I think
history is yeah, but he makes his bones as as
a coordinator, there's no question. So if it works for
Sean McVeigh being the head coach of the offense for
the Rams and Wade Phillips really being the head coach
of the defense. It can work the other way around.
When you when when you think of something like that

(02:22:02):
and you think, oh, man, you know this could work
in the NFL. We can hire a defensive coach as
long as he brings in an offensive quote mastermind. Whether
it's a young up and coming quarterbacks coach who's gonna
get the approach to be an offensive coordinator who can
play pretty well, or someone like Gary Kubiak who would
become the offensive coordinator in Denver what that could work.

(02:22:22):
But that could work for Vic Fogio because he could
be the head coach of the defense and then his
other higher at O C can be the quote head
coach of the offense. Now, I get he's never done
it before. He hasn't done it, but he's been around
the game for a long time. The players love him.
He's got that kind of magnetism where they want to

(02:22:43):
go out and kick ass for him. And you see
what he's done on the defensive side of he does
that for everybody's gonna love him. It doesn't matter. And
he wouldn't be this far along in the hiring process
with the Broncos if they didn't feel he was head
coaching material. Well, I mean would be yeah. And I
think one of the big parts here is you've got
a defense that a lot of those guys are up

(02:23:04):
for contracts in two years, So now's the time to
make the hardest whatever you can of between von Miller
and these other stars and bring someone in to work
the offense. I know Jason Cohls like just hire Mike
Shanahan already, and I thought that was kind of fun,
But you certainly need someone to do a job evaluating case.

(02:23:26):
Keenum's got another year on his deal. You're lindsay, you're
hoping he gets back from his injury after a fantastic
rookie year. Sanders got hurt, he got rid of to
Marius Thomas. A lot of moving parts there, so you
need some stability and John Elway needs to reconstitute that offense.
But for Vic Fangio, sure, he's you know, the old
go the opposite way, right, the zero running back strategy

(02:23:48):
and fantasy football the last couple of years or whatever
the case. Maybe to find your analogy in the sporting
world or your own general manager. Uh notions while poor
ing another twelve ounces down your gullet with your buddies
at a bar. The idea of being that you go
the opposite, uh, you know, the the Castanza rule, right,

(02:24:10):
whatever your instincts are, do the opposite. And everybody's going
for the young new coordinator or college head coach or
whatever it is to try to find McVey Part two,
Part four. And I hate that we've defaulted to that,
but let's call it what it is. The Azy Cardinals
dot Com in their release that they'd signed Kingsbury, the

(02:24:32):
first line was, he's a friend of Seawan. Nicknays. It's
like everybody think used to be a friend of Bills
Bill Clinton back in the day. But it's that kind
of idea that so why not go the opposite? Especially
you had wild card weekend, nobody scored more in twenty
three points, So go find a guy to coach up
a defense that's already in good shape, and just fix

(02:24:54):
the offense and tweak it to where you're not relying
on Lindsay to go for a hundred fifty yards. Twitter
right out about a frisk and Mike and swollen down
the Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon. Now,
before we get to Deb Carson for an update tonight,
want to I want to play something for you in
case you missed it earlier in the show, because look,
Deb Carson has been keeping us informed on what's going

(02:25:16):
on updates wise, you know, for a long time now
here at Fox Sports Radio. And tonight she brought her daughter,
Chasing with her, six years old, and it's had a
lot of great personality and meta over at the vending machine,
which she wanted a stickers bar from out of the
vending machine, and I said, listen, vegetables are no good
for you. Just eat as much candy as possible, which
I don't think Deb really enjoyed so much. Devin, was

(02:25:37):
that okay that I said that to Chase or or
was that all right? Absolutely? Jason? I can, I can.
I've got years to undo the damage. That's that's being done, right.
It's so what we did was, you know, we we
get Deb Carson's updates, you know, all the time, top
and bottom of the hour, but I wanted an update
from Chase on what her day was like. You know,

(02:25:58):
Let's see, let's see if she had some of the
same traits or mom has. So this was the debut
Network radio debut of Chase Carson with her own update.
Let's hear it, Hey, Chase, it's Jason. Can you hear me?
All right? Remember me? I saw I met you at
the vending machine before and when you had the snickers? Yeah?

(02:26:18):
Remember I telled you vegetables were bad and you should
just have candy? Yeah? Was I right or wrong? Wrong? Well,
it's a good answer to give him. Not the first
person to tell him he's wrong either. Now, your mom
does a job every night and she updates everybody across
the whole country what's going on in the world of sports.
But I want you, because you're here with your mom

(02:26:40):
tonight seeing what she does at work. Tell me, update me,
Tell everybody what happened to you today at school? Tell
me something that happened today. Give us an update. What
was the most fun thing that happened to you today
at school? Afternoon? Racist? Oh? Yeah? Why Why was it
so much fun? Because you get to play with hula

(02:27:00):
hoops and jumpprop And you know those are two things
Jason hasn't done since he's probably your r I don't
know how to hula hoop. I really don't you do?
I do? I do? It's so fun. I can do
it so long. That's awesome. All right, Hey, what's more

(02:27:21):
fun doing hula hooper? Being here with your mom? Being
here with my mom? Is that really the truth? Is
that really the truth? Maybe? Okay, here you go. Hey,
thanks so much for coming on the radio with his Chase.

(02:27:42):
Be good with your mom. That's a very good to
make sure you do have vegetables. They are very important,
all right? Stop that man about that? That was the
radio debut of Chase cart You know when she said
maybe at the end depth that sounded just like you.
Is that right what she said that? I said that
that's dev right there where she maybe that's right there?

(02:28:07):
She has a lot of fun. Yeah. I I watched
your girls, you know, when they were a little bit younger,
come to the studio when they were probably about her
age actually uh, and Chase was just a little thing,
and I thought, gosh, they seem so big and now
she's at age. Is kind of crazy how quickly time flies? Well,
and you know they always say in show business you
ever want to follow you know, animals or children, but

(02:28:27):
unfortunately you have to follow your child, and and and
given up. I don't know if it's going to be
as good as what she gave us, but I mean
it's it's kind of what you have to do, unless
unless you want that to be the update, and we
can be good. Well, I think folks looking for for
some scores and some coaching information might want some some
more substantial information. But we'll do the best we can,
all right, as long as we get Chase's screaming there

(02:28:48):
a couple of times. Absolutely, Sam, get ready to cue
the scream, Thank you very much. Cliff Kingsbury will be
the next ten coach of the Arizona Cardinals on a
four year or contract. Guccaneers are finalizing a four year
deal for Bruce Arians to be their next head coach,
and there are two finalists for the Brown's head coaching job,

(02:29:09):
according to NFL Network, Cleveland's own offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens
and Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski. Also nine News in
Denver says the Broncos have narrowed it down to two candidates,
Bears defensive defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and Steelers assistant Mike Munchak.
Also News guys a local station in San Diego says

(02:29:29):
the Raiders have contacted the Mayor's office in San Diego
about possibly playing their home games down there in twenty
nineteen if the stadium formerly known as Qualcolm where the
Chargers used to play before they came up to l A.
Ohio state receiver kJ Hill announced he's gonna return to
play his senior season for the buck Eyes moving to
the NBA. Clay Thompson with forty three points tonight as

(02:29:50):
the Warriors beat the Next one Clippers with nine home
win over the Hornets. Lou Williams twenty seven points, ten
assist in the win for l A. Raptors got thirty
one kauhai from Kawhi Leonard. They meet the Hawks one
oh four, one oh one. T woolves with the one
nineteen one seventeen win at Oklahoma City and Ryan saunders
first game as interim head coach, of course, after the

(02:30:13):
firing of Tom Thibodeau and Andrew Wiggins with a season
high forty points ten rebounds in the win. We'll be
back with the Jason Smith Show in ten seconds, But first,
a word from farmers from a dog accidentally flooding a
living room to a dog taking a joy ride. We've
covered it. Talk to farmers. We know a thing or two.
Because we've seen a thing or two. We are farmers

(02:30:36):
under written my Farmers Truck Fire Insurance Exchanges and affiliates
products not available in every state. Jason Smith, Mike Harmon,
back to you guys. Thank you d C. Thank you
Chase for your national radio sports doc debut. As soon
as she can stay up to eleven o'clock, she'll have
our jobs. I'm telling you, she's awake right now. She's
been so interested in the show and a few things

(02:30:57):
on the iPad. But don't tell anybody. I let her
stay up this wa wait, wait, she's still here. Yeah,
she's dead. I have to child services. Now it's a
final well her her dad had a meeting and we
thought he'd come pick her up. And she's like, no,
I want to stay here. And I figured she'd fall asleep,
and such luck. That's how entertaining and exciting we are exactly.

(02:31:17):
She's got the radio bug now. She likes being on
the air. Of course she microphone. She read button and
can I play her favorite drop? There you go? Uh,
child services, we are at the corner of dad. Thanks

(02:31:38):
so much, and well, I'll come over to see Chase.
I didn't know she was still here and or awake. Absolutely. Thanks, well, John,
I'll tell you Chase is pretty good. She got there
and absolutely first. I mean, there must have been a
bad experience in one of the classes though, one part
of the day, because I mean she got kind of

(02:31:58):
silent on that, like, how was your day? Well, yeah,
I tell you about my day, my Carmen. It's always
funny when when you hear when of your kids comes home,
how is your day today? It was a bad day? Oh, why?
Well because at recess Marlowe was mad at Ya, and
then Raya was mad at Elijah and and and somebody

(02:32:19):
thought that they were mad at me. And then I thought, ma,
I'm going, oh my god, well, yeah, it's a horrible day.
Oh I don't have that drama. I've had both my
daughters come up. It's like working on group projects, like
this guy is lazy, this guy doesn't know how to write.
This guy hasn't hit any of the deadlines. That trade.

(02:32:39):
Daughters aren't newspaper editors, so but eighth grade, fifth grade,
just trying to hit deadlines, have something, you have something new,
and they try to work too, you know, get it done.
It's lazy. Oh yeah, he's lazy. Hey did you think
he just had too much sugar at luncheon? Bad habits early.

(02:33:06):
This guy hasn't learned. This guy, we got a presentation
on Friday, and we're supposed to have our note cards
ready so we can turn it into slides. It's Wednesday afternoon.
He still hasn't done his work. Let's calling twelve year
old lady. Now I gotta call child services for you.
Bring it Twitter at how about a fresco? Yeah? Here

(02:33:27):
you want to. Let's let's watch from Jason Smith Show
with my best friend Mike Harmon coming up next. Hey, hey,
we got some late breaking news out of the West Coast.
If you were waiting for a huge NBA Stars season
debut this year, you might not have to wait too

(02:33:47):
much longer. We got that story coming up next. This
is Fox, all right. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Jason Smith Show with Mike harm In weekdays
at ten pm Eastern seven pm Pacific. From a hot
air balloon landing on a car to a load of
concrete falling on one, we've covered it. Talked to farmers,

(02:34:08):
we know a thing or two. Because we've seen a
thing or two. We are farmers under written. My farmers
took fire insurance exchanges and affiliates products unavailable in every state.
Fox Sports Radio that Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon live from the Geico Studios. Before we
get to a breaking story out of the NBA, we
have the best story of the night by far, and

(02:34:32):
tonight the Timberwolves one and most of the game was
a referendum on hey, what a night for Andrew Wiggins
had he had forty points. Here's the Timberwolves playing uh
and winning a game, their first game since firing Tom Thibodeau.
But the best moment actually came after the game was over,
as the winning head coach is Ryan Saunders, son of

(02:34:56):
the late Flip Saunders, longtime Timberwolves head coach. And when
Ryan Saunders came into the locker room after the game
was over to talk to the team waiting for him
was the team with champagne and all kinds of drinks.
They were pouring all over him, water and and it
was just an insane bath that he got. The players

(02:35:17):
all excited, jumping up and down as happy as they
were for Ryan Saunders. You don't see that that often
in the NBA. Thirty two years old and here he
is gets his first win for the same team that
his dad coached for so many years to so much success,
and they gave him the game ball and seeing him
hug all his players, he's he's got to learn that
when you wear the light uh dress shirt, you gotta

(02:35:38):
wear the light T shirt under. You can't go with
the black T shirt under the light dress shirt because
it kind of shows through when it gets wet. No,
I think you roll through with you dance with what
brung you in. If that's your style, that's your style
right this game? Also in game UH Netherlands, Noel left
on a stretcher after a big collision, UH went to

(02:36:01):
went to the glass and hit the floor. Very scary
sight where they were yelling, hey, keep your eyes open. Uh.
So in game a lot flowing out. Keep an eye
on his update. But but for Saunders, I mean, just
an absolutely incredible moment. I referenced his Wikipedia page earlier,

(02:36:22):
making sure to note he's the only undefeated coach currently
in the NBA. Good you know, hey, you know where
that as long as you can frame it if underfeared
the NBA, just like the era of Cliff Kingsbury undefeated
as us that is right, brilliantly done and and certainly
here long road ahead, but thirty two years old getting

(02:36:43):
his shot, uh and an opportunity here. And obviously when
we talk about players, uh, players coaches and being able
to relate to players, at thirty two, you got a shot, right.
That was the knock, right. Jimmy Butler at thirty two
didn't relate to the other players in the locker room.
Maybe maybe there's an outside here. Meanwhile, this is the

(02:37:05):
late breaking news I referred to a few minutes ago,
is that if you have been waiting for DeMarcus Cousins
season debut with the Warriors, you might not have to
wait that much longer. Remember, right before Chris As it
was all we have no idea. It was maybe February,
maybe later. The undefeated Mark Spears reporting tonight that DeMarcus

(02:37:27):
Cousins targeting the January eighteenth game at the Clippers as
his season debut. He's not played since rupturing his left
achilles tendon with the Pelicans last January, so it would
be just about a year uh for him to come
back a little bit over, a little bit less than
a year for him to come back and play for

(02:37:48):
the Warriors. Before the game tonight, Steve curse at all
I can tell you is his return is closer now.
The last week is scrimmaging is better. He's gotten through
the worst of it, and now it looks like he's
gonna make his debut in a few days again, January
eighteenth at the Clippers. And I guarantee you this is
what Steve Kerr has been pointing towards all season long.

(02:38:08):
He knows, how can I motivate my players? Right? How
can I motivate my team after winning title after title
after title? We're gonna struggle during the regular season because,
let's face it, when you win titles, the regular season
gets less important. And when you look at the standings
in the Western Conference that bears it out. You have
the Nuggets, who clearly have a lot to play for

(02:38:28):
this year. They've never won the conference, not in this era,
and so yeah, we want to get out there, have
home court advantage, and the Warriors have lost fourteen games.
They shouldn't have lost four teen games. This kind of talent,
But you get a little bored I guarantee you. Steve
Kerr has been pointing to this, saying, Okay, if we
can get to Boogie Cousins coming back, he will inject
us with a new kind of energy, and that's where

(02:38:50):
I'm hoping we take off from because sometimes it's just
a new energy that's needed. You know, we talked about
this in in baseball and football why the the Ravens
played so well under Lamar Jack's and Lamar Jackson didn't
go crazy throwing the football, but he ran well, he
threw it well enough, and he gave the team a
different kind of energy. They won a couple of games
and everybody got behind Lamar Jackson. Suddenly, my Lamar Jackson.

(02:39:12):
The Pro Bowl looks pretty good, doesn't it. But sometimes
it's that energy and Boogie Cousins will bring. That's what
Steve Kerr is hoping. We'll bring that kind of energy
when he comes as something new. It's what we've needed,
and that's when our team will start really becoming the
team we're going to be during the playoffs, and that's
when we start our takeoff. That that's when we get
ready for takeoff. That's what he's because if that doesn't

(02:39:33):
do it. Steve Kerr is gonna worry the rest of
the way through. We got three month launching pad. It
also brings back potentially another element and layer of crazy
to the locker room and and active play and certainly
rotation and minutes and touches, and we'll see if guys
get salty. Kevin Durant in the post game had a
very nice looking, clean white Sox hat on celebrate that

(02:39:55):
he had twenty four points. Clay Thompson forty three points.
He dribbled the ball four times from all reports in
seven of sixty and from three but only had to
dribble four times in the beat down here. But yeah,
that that's it. You're trying to find motivation. You're always
trying to shuffle up and see how you get your

(02:40:17):
team to that next level to get him back on points.
And you know, for for those that are sad they
watched a Warrior's loss at home, don't worry. The winds
will start rolling when it's winning time and it matters.
And also congratulations as back in the NFL tonight, speaking
of late breaking stories, Todd Bowls returns super He will

(02:40:40):
be Bruce Arians defensive coordinator in Tampa Bay, Bruce arians
