(00:24):
listening to Fox Sports Radio. Greetings and welcome inside the
Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Carmen. No
more mobile Guy Coat Studios. Both of us in Los Angeles,
back where we belong, ready to take you through four
hours of head coaching playoff breakdown. I'm so excited. Oh

(00:44):
it's very exciting. I haven't had white Castle in four days.
You have a withdrawal a little bit. I could see
your a little twitch Friday night. I went for white
Castle after the show and now I'm you know, didn't
have any Saturday. As you're eating that last bite and
teach us how to say good write it down and

(01:05):
then why are you singing? Sir? You can get more
of further way I know is that I'm leaving. I'm
going back. Should have brought some back on the plane
to see how how much you could have charged for
them before I would attach you, Oh wants white Castle,
wants white cast. Right, it's not the same thing as
like trying to sell the Popeye's chicken. It's not. It's
not where you can. People can go get that where

(01:27):
they want. Yeah, but there's still gonna be a markup
because the smell is gonna get them and they're gonna say,
you know what I'm in. Look, I don't know. I
don't love mark have done it. I mean, look, I
have loved to have done it, but I wasn't gonna maken. No,
you could have doubled your cash. I guarantee you no,
not gonna get him. Not happening, all right? That was
I could have tried. I would have if I thought
there was that people are just leaving to try, they

(01:48):
would have just had one. There's no shortage of white
But maybe it wasn't front of mine. Maybe they were
stuck eating bad food that a relative cooked for them.
All the white Castle is gone. I gotta get that
last white Castle cheeseburger. That's a movie. The last white
gast wasn't that. There was a movie called Harold and
Camaro to Whitecastle. It was the moment. It wasn't because

(02:09):
it was the last one in this world that we
would drop. There's one remaining, so welcome inside. As we
break down everything we saw this weekend in the National
Football League. We have big hirings and potential hirings in
the NFL. And let's start with the Cowboys. Because I
was almost right about this. I was so almost right now.

(02:33):
I was right all the way up until I said
the name of the next coach with the Cowboys. But
here's why I was right, because last week we debated
where are the Cowboys gonna go? I told you this
is what's gonna happen. Because it's the Dallas Cowboys. You're
gonna hear one name, maybe two, and that one name,
that first name you here, that's gonna wind up being
the coach that's gonna happen very quickly. And that's exactly

(02:55):
what happened. We heard Mike McCarthy, we heard Marvin Lewis.
Obviously the cow was you need to adhere to the
Rooney rule. They hire Morvin. I mean, I don't know
what kind of interview Marvin Lewis. I hope he got
a good one a legitimate interview. You know you heard,
you heard Mike McCarthy Marvin Lewis, and you knew that
it was gonna be Mike McCarthy. And then Mike McCarthy
stays at Jerry Jones's house on Saturday. As soon as

(03:16):
you get that piece, honey, it's not coming home. I'm
staying at Jerry tonight. Yeah. No, I I yeah, I
just patted his months. I got I got only before
you go to bed, I got some, got some my coco.
Just don't spill. Any of those sheets are made of
of uh, jerseys of former cowboy legends in the past.
So I got that room for you right here. Breakfast
is at seven thirty. You want to come downstairs and

(03:39):
make sure you get down there right away. And um,
it's just down here right bathroom is here right over here.
I got got some special uh cowboy tawels for you
when you want to take a shower, uh extra big shower.
You can use mine if you won't uh. And UH
got the Jerry Benedict sandwich is coming out, and good
see him dressed up doing it like a little you know,
small town with scar on bed and breakfast we're gonna

(04:02):
stay up late playing pictionary if you want with with us,
and then uh probably go to bed, like around midnight.
Jerry's offering you fresh squeezed orange shoes from btes out
A twelve thirty. So just just so you know, all right,
we and no no long distance phone calls if you
have your sell The WiFi is Jerry's world. Uh three
sixteen alright, so typing on that very and it's the

(04:24):
WiFi is only four ninety nine a day, so don't
worry about that. Password is Jerry is the best and
just type that in there and you should be good
to go. So he stays at Jerry Jones's house and
then becomes the Cowboys head coach. As soon as he
got out of New York. I'm like, all right, they're
done well. And you know and that if that seemed
the obvious fit that way, well there was. I I

(04:44):
don't know why people are criticizing this move, and I
unless you're just looking for a hot take around this.
Because Mike McCarthy was the candidate this year, there wasn't
a whole bunch of others Sean mcveigh's or Kyle Shanahan's
out there that you could go pick from you trying
to turn Matt rule into something we maybe Matt rule.
There was nobody else out there. It's just like the

(05:06):
NFL Draft. Every year, Hey, this draft is rich with quarterbacks,
and then some years it's not rich with quarterbacks. Every
year there's coaches who you're gonna hire for coaching openings.
Some years there's three or four really good coaches, other
years there's one. Nobody else was Mike McCarthy, who has
developed a quarterback, has one big one Big Games and

(05:27):
one Super Bowls. There was nobody else like that. The
Giants letting him go was a huge mistake. Anybody that
didn't bring Mike McCarthy in beside the Cowboys, it was
a huge mistake. He was the candidate. Who else did
you want? I mean, really, if if you haven't open,
if you're the Browns, if you're the Giants, who else
do you want? There's you're looking for somebody to materialize
out of nowhere. That's just not gonna happen. As we

(05:49):
talked about with Jay Glazer last week, are experts Jason
Cole joining us. It was the theme was there's got
to be a grown up in the room, right for
all of these circumstances, and the for the giants, it's
how do you develop Daniel Jones and make that locker
room move forward? Right, You've got a couple of young pieces,
but there's still a lot of work to be done

(06:10):
in Cleveland. There's no adult through him. So who's gonna
be the guy to lead Baker Mayfield? And what were
the the three words that were thrown out? What it was? Fear,
accountability and discipline. So that I don't know that McCarthy
inspires much fear. Those are three words I don't want
to hear, but we need fear. Yeah, I don't like
any of those works, but the things you want for

(06:33):
he doesn't inspire that, like free food and naps. Give
me those three words. And stones are good words too.
But you because you saw Ron Rivera go to the Redskins,
what's his first order of business? All fun is out?
I want guys that want to work fun football, no fun,
shuffleboard gone. Look, I get looks the business, the business
aspect of it is important and and that's obviously you

(06:54):
want somebody because whatever you're underachieving, there's that consensus Okay,
we're not working hard enough and it's not always a
case of working hard enough. It's just working smart. It's
being able to take advantage of the talent you have.
And and really there was nobody else out look at
the candidates tour out there. Now there is no one.
But it's always if you decided Matt Rule is your guy,
and he comes in and wows you because he's the unknown.

(07:15):
Anybody everything else was the veteran. Veteran head coach seemed
to be on the menu for everybody right because they
needed to grown up in the room. And that's why
make a lot of teams that you need that CEO,
someone who can can be a CEO of the team
but also is an offensive mind. Especially McCarthy fits that
when you go out of your your way immediately to say,

(07:38):
our new head coach is gonna be able to help
pick the GM again, which makes no sense. But that's okay,
we already have the GM here. It's me, So don't
worry about picking anything. Run the bed and breakfast and
I'm the GM. You see the sign outside it says
Jerry Jones, owner proprietor Valley Ranch B and B. And
so that's what I was going to change it to
see and See for cowboys and cowboys, but people didn't

(07:59):
know what that meant, so they think about to see
and see music factor that band back from the nineties,
everybody dance with the Freedom Williams guy who would dance?
Who was? And then there was the other people in it,
and then there was Uh. They had a couple of hits.
I remember jamming out back in the day Everybody dance Now,
and then the one where they named all the all
the different groups though who and the Doors and the

(08:20):
Rolling Stones and everything, And I remember those bands. In fact,
Mick Jagger and I want to let me well, I'll
tell you about a soccer game at Wembley once. But
that's that's really where. If anybody wants to criticize the
Mike McCarthy hiring because X, it's like, okay, then what's
the answer If you don't like that, what did you
like instead? And there's nobody who can say, oh, instead

(08:41):
of Mike McCarthy, it should have been this guy, because
there's no known quantities. There's nobody you can say. Matt
Rule is who they're trying to make into a star
right now, and they're trying to make Josh McDaniels into something. Oh,
Josh McDaniels failed horribly his first time as a head coach.
But and so you think now he's automatically and you
better No, he's intriguing. But is he gonna be great?

(09:02):
You know you are taking a chance when there is
one candidate. I'm sorry, it's a here where there's not
a lot of people out there. But suddenly Jim Harbaugh
is not gonna call you on the phone and go, boy,
I gotta get out of here in Michigan, many nine
ten games, I keep doing. I can't do anything right. Hey,
you know what, Mr Marra I would like to come
coach in New York Giants. That's not happening. None of
those things were going to occur. So if you didn't

(09:23):
like Mike McCarthy, all right, well, what's the alternative? Is
Mike McCarthy the best head coach in the world is
either guy? No, he's a guy that the Jets passed
on last year for Adam Gate. But now that a
year has gone by and you need a coach and
these are the things to choose from, Well, you gotta
pick what's there. You gotta pick from the best of
what's there and he's the best of what's that? That's it.
The biggest thing with Mike McCarthy is you can make

(09:44):
the criticism of what was the PR campaign right the
here here's the clips of live interviews that he was
doing in in long form things saying I'm embracing analytics.
He showed up at the Pro Football Focus for half
a day their office is to kind of learn how
they grade people that I don't. I don't. I don't

(10:04):
understand how that's a selling point because the guy was
a head coach for and a coach for a long time.
So suddenly saying, you know what, I'm gonna take a
one eight and I'm gonna embrace all this new stuff
and throw out everything you know that won me a
Super Bowl and made me relate to players, forget it.
I'm out. So the curiosity for me is, okay, one,
how much of that does he change philosophically being out

(10:26):
of it, out of the game for a year and
the second you've never had him with the the big
running back. Will he make the same mistakes that Jason
Garrett and Kellen Moore did of Hey, let's have Dak
throw the ball forty five bleep in times of game
when we paid the offensive lineman each a truckload of
money and we brought back Ezekiel Elliott and gave him too. Yeah,

(10:48):
but then there's also the wait, you mean I can
call a play in and they run it. The quarterback
doesn't change it. He doesn't. That's true. I don't gonna
blank you from the huddle and side instead of a
drill up late, He's throw it over the middle on
third and fay. Wait that that happens. De's gonna run
what I tell Oh wow, I didn't know. Way you

(11:09):
should have told me that Jerry I had to come
here last year. This is gonna be awesome. Ian, You're
not joking with me. Now. I'm not gonna say sixty
five toss power trap and I'm gonna see a bunch
of fingers from my quarterback and then suddenly it's going
to be a deep out that goes on. Oh wow. Well, hey,
that's what I want now. I want this job. If
that's gonna happen, that's great. And I do appreciate everybody

(11:31):
that uh lined up and took the office space reference
that had made over the weekend and claimed it as
their own. That on the fourteenth they were going to
fix the glitch because Jason Garrett was gonna go. Well,
in a perfect world, Jerry Jones wanted to wait until
the fourteen so he could he could shake his finger
at writers and say, Jason wasn't fired. He wasn't his

(11:53):
contract lapsed, and we went in a different direction. I
guarantee you that's what he wanted to do. But now
once Mike mccarth if these names started getting out there
and it was he's gonna interview with the Giants on Friday,
because that was the whole thing. When Jerry Jones is
saying we're figuring things out with Jason Garrett, I had said, hey,
obviously these names out there don't really mean anything because
all these names are being mentioned. The only name you

(12:15):
didn't hear was Lincoln Riley. And might you start to
hear Mike McCarthy, And then what it was he's interviewing
with the Giants on Friday. And then suddenly what happened
early Saturday morning, Mike McCarthy's interviewing with us here Saturday morning,
and and of course the Cowboys bifted because now they're
interviewing guys without firing Jason Garrett and this is a
complete mess. And I gave Jerry Jones a little bit
more credit than he deserved. But that was what it was.

(12:35):
Once you heard, Hey, the giants want to talk to
Mike McCarthy. Okay, now we gotta get and we gotta
talk to him. He's gonna do and we're gonna do
a sleepover. So call your mom, make sure it's okay.
Bring a toothbrush, anything else, any food allergies, so you know,
we don't feed you. I know, because I know you
like to eat a lot of you, you know, so
just let me know. But from the two things, from
the business side, Number one, I mean, there's a lot
of great There's more restaurants per capita in Dallas than

(12:58):
anywhere else. So other than beating at Jerry's, plenty of
place to go. I don't know how they have White Castle.
We got the have Back Steakhouse. Now you know they
go there a little bit, you know when it's when
no rules, just right, that's what they said. You got
a lot of different places you can go. I'll listen
as the Olive Garden, that's a good one to bottom
bottomless pasta. Mike, you're gonna love that. You just keep
going and keep being a food. But from a business perspective,

(13:20):
both McCarthy and Garrett have the same agent. So anybody
that was really feeling bad for Jason Garrett that all
this was going on behind his back and everything, I
don't think so. I don't think he was well well
informed of the proceedings, not that he wasn't gonna keep
lobbying for his job. But we move on. He was
the only big choice, the only good choice, the only

(13:42):
right choice, and everybody else let him go on the
Cowboys got the right guy. Twitter at how about a Fresco?
Mike hat swollen down The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon.
We got more on Mike McCarthy, coming up more on
the Cowboys. But coming up next, It's pretty easy to
tell you what's next for Tom Brady the New England Patriots.
I'll also tell you what I did immediately after the

(14:04):
Patriots lost on Saturday Night. It's next on Fox. Be
sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show
with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app.
Fox Sports Radio. The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harman Bold Ball. We got Mike Pereira stopping

(14:24):
buying a few minutes talking about the two biggest controversial
plays of the weekend. And that's why you're gonna say,
blocked out an hour. No no, no, he's he's got
too much wine to drink. He can't stop fantastic. No no, no,
we got, we got, we gotta get. And that's son
of the Uh yeah, the Carson Wentz to Davian Clowney play,

(14:45):
the Kyle Rudolph play. We'll get with Mike Pereira coming
up in a few minutes to break that down book
and the crackback block that stole my win by the
Buffalo Bill. No no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
That game, you cannot blame anything. That game should have
been a tie. Oh that game. You know what, I
would like to see someone try to explain football to

(15:07):
someone who didn't know anything about it. The only thing
you could use is the last two minutes of that game.
That's the only that's the only thing you can show
people that try to explain football to them. I'd like
to see you try to do that. There was so
much what is? What is? What are the Bills doing?
What I understand the Texans doing, I don't understand. Explain
football just using the last two minutes of the game,

(15:28):
and that's all you can do. Forget you'll you'll never stand.
My girls laughed and said, I've never seen football like this, Dad,
It's like neither of them. So wait, the punter can
spike the ball? Well you technically okay, you know That's
where I would say, you know what, this is just
not happening. We're gonna looks. We're gonna follow golf. Golf
a lot easier. But outside of the Cowboys, Mike McCarthy

(15:49):
had a lot of NFL. What is now next? For
Tom Brady and the Patriots, It's actually pretty easy after
they lose on Saturday night. The first thing I want
to say is this, after the game was over, I
was really taken by surprise at the amount of pure
joy people had on social media and otherwise that the
Patriots lost. I mean, this wasn't when the Yankees lose,

(16:12):
people go oh blank, the Yankees day suck, it's over.
But now this is different. This was I am so
glad the Patriots lost, and everybody celebrated. It was like
everybody's favorite team won. The first thing I did, I
didn't even talk about the game. I just put up
a jiff of the yub Nub dance at the end
of Return of the Jedi. Everybody is dancing, and Lando

(16:33):
is clapping, and you're seeing the holograms. I mean the
one where they they they put what's his name in
it and took the old guy out. Uh. Yeah, you
know the peanut butter that you eat, that's when you
put out. Oh, I put out a lot of peanut butter.
Peanut butter. Every it's a gift, it's a it's a gift,
and reference in there too, So it's a gift. It's

(16:55):
a gift, and it's a gift. And it was Jeff,
and it was ice cream, and it was peanut, it
was all of these things. It was a gift. But
but yeah, I've never seen the nation so united on anything. Yeahhh.
And no matter what you do, imagine we could get
to that on politics we had together, that be awesome.
That would be fantastic. Never gonna be hiding in an

(17:17):
if we started to agree that, that would be amazing.
But I mean, every everybody was just ah, the Patriots law,
they're not gonna win the Super Bowl. I was fairly salty.
I wanted to see it continue. You know, you should
torment the rest of the sports love and world. It's
different in watching really good teams that you either love

(17:39):
or hate lose, because that happens all the time. But
like I said, whether it's the Yankees, whether it's the Warriors,
whether it's the Lakers, whatever team it is, you know
they're seeing teams going ha ha ha, and then there's
oh my god, I'm so happy that they lost, because
most of the time it's the ha ha. Look at that.
Lebron thought he was x Y and z ah, look
at that. Look. But this was just oh my god,

(18:01):
I'm so happy people on Facebook or doing the mark
safe from watching Tom Brady playing in the Super Bowl.
I mean that there's a difference, and that I first
saw this after they came back to beat the Falcons
and the Super Bowl down three, where it was amazing
and it was an incredible comeback, but who was really
happy about it? There was the next day was now
not an overall can you believe the Patriots one? It

(18:24):
was Patriots one where I was watching they were really
angry at me because they wanted to change the channels,
like can the kids watch it? No, this game isn't over.
And then they came back at one and everybody just
staring at it, like you willed this into existence just
to torment us. But yeah, Saturday was just odd. But
it's you mentioned the Warriors and they had their flash,

(18:44):
but everybody got to that villain point right where they're
they're angry. Spurs never got that level of vitriol for
all the years they were relevant. But the Patriots, it's
just that that burning hatred that everybody had and now
that's gone. So what do you have? You have the referee,
hate something else, Always find something else to hate. We'll
always find something else to hate, Like the Cowboys will

(19:07):
be good now, Mike McCarthy will be good. I'm gonna
keep hate. I mean on the on the Saints and
they're whining. No this, They'll always plenty people hate. But
as far that because so that was kind of interesting,
that phenomenon of the joy instead of the ha ha.
But I I can't believe there's even a question that
Tom Brady is gonna be leaving the Patriots. We've told

(19:27):
you all season long. We've we've we've followed the blood curmbs.
We've told you he's leaving all these different pieces of evidence.
Josh McDaniels interviewing to move out because likely Belichick is
staying because he knows Tom Brady is going. After the
game was over, what did Brady say, Well, I don't
know about my future. Uh, we'll figure it out, right,
Bill Belichick said the same thing. I don't know, we'll

(19:48):
figure it out. We haven't spent all this time worried
about the Titans, and now we'll we'll figure that out.
And what did Bob Kraft say today? I hope Tom
Brady either comes back with us or he retires. If
Tom Brady wanted to come back to the Patriots and
the Patriots wanted him, this wouldn't be a conversation. There
would be no Well, I don't know what's gonna happen
from Tom Brady. I don't know what's gonna happen from

(20:10):
Bill Belichick. I don't know what's gonna happen from Bob Kraft.
Tom Brady is an icon. Tom Brady is gonna go
down at worst the second quarterback of all times. Belichick
to describe it. You would think he would be able
to say I want to come back, we want you
to come back. There's been none of that. There's not
once been Tom Brady saying I want to return. There's
not one s been Belichick and Bob Kraft saying we

(20:32):
want him to return so bad Bob Kraft couldn't even
say today we want him to come back or retire.
It's like, why can't you just say you want him back?
Why can't you say that if you really want him back,
that should be all. I mean, everybody who's just sitting
there going well, I don't know if we have the evidence,
that should be the end of all the evidence. No
one is saying they want to return or want him back,
so you know he is gone. See. I think with

(20:53):
Bob Kraft it's we want him at a price. I
think the argument because if they don't resign, and there's
a lot of day cap, right, there's like thirteen point
five or thereabouts for next year and then another six
point five to seven. So I think part of it
is let's play the game, right, is how badly this
Tom want to leave us? Right? Because we open But

(21:15):
I don't think the money it's Tom Brady. No, no,
but do you want to pay him thirty million dollars?
Tom Brady he's never taken that money. He's always said
maybe it's a new it's the one last I want
to get my last page. I think he's year. I
don't think that's good. I think he did just fine.
I think you could look at the stats and what
they didn't bring him, and that's where I think the

(21:35):
problem is depending on on the price the haggling for
Tom Brady, I don't think it's necessarily even about contract dollars.
I think it's about how are you going to help me?
That offensive line was terrible. The weapons they brought into
the pages aren't going to get better. They're not gonna
do stuff. All Belichick does is try to make but
but my my to my point is just the everybody

(21:58):
that signaled the death knew. Look what they had men
Mohammed Sanu was supposed to be a savior. Just a
guy two under eighteen yards I believe was the exact count,
including the playoff game. Nikio Harry missed the half the season,
So there's your first round guy. So everybody that's doing
the hot take of if they had a j Brown
or they had DK Metcalf. No, no, they picked the

(22:20):
right guy for what they wanted to do. He was hurt,
he didn't get into the field. I don't see how
all of a sudden magically you go yeah, and they
don't throw the ball deep repeatedly, which is all Russell
Wilson does the d game. Metcalf, They're run deep, but
I'm gonna throw in a long ways. So the Packers,
you're in trouble because you you don't defend that very well.
But for for Brady, I mean even Julian Edelman, I

(22:41):
mean he was in bubble wrap for half the year
because he's he's broken, so I mean he's could probably
be gone. He may be done as well. So unless
you can totally do a reboot or reboot as I
like to say, Uh, you know that's the bigger part
for Tom Brady's if they want if they wanted him
back and he wanted back, you could at least say
it at the end of the season. But I mean

(23:01):
that's not Belichick, Brady more or like. But there's nobody
saying it. I'm telling you it would have been would
have been easy. It's Tom Brady in the business. I'll
tell you, you know, because they're not going to work
with you bring up no, you bring up something interesting.
We'll get to the Patriots coming up in a little while,
because there's a different angle to this when as coming

(23:23):
off the season. I want to get to but twitter
at how about a fresca? Mike has swollen dome. We
got Mike Pereira coming up in ninety seconds. But first,
be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart
Radio app from the Getic Studios. Fox NFL rules analysts

(23:44):
for a VP of Officiating joins us now on the hotline. Boy, Mike,
if only we had a couple of big plays to
talk about. I'm sorry, we don't. I don't know. Did
anything happen? Nothing happened? What what? Throw the ball in
the end zone, toss it to the referee? You called
for touchdown? What what looks? It's it's been twenty four

(24:06):
hours and so let's again, we're gonna face. We're gonna
end every season with the final play of the Saints game.
So the offensive pass interference not called on Kyle Rudolph.
We got the explanation from the officials who after said
they looked at it very briefly. In New York there
was no pass interference and that's why there was no Hey,
we're gonna look at this because it's a scoring play

(24:27):
review play. They looked at it quickly said it was none.
They ended the game. Where are you now, you see,
it's twenty four hours to digest this on the no
call and how it was all settled, Well, I think
I'm at the same place that I was last night,
and and that was that. That was a ridiculous thing
that the league said, Um, you know, and all I did,
all I think they did was further complicate the issue.

(24:50):
Because it is interference. It is a foul. Now the
question is does it raise the level of what they
want to call in replay. That's the big question here.
That should have been called on the field, okay, but
now when you talk about the new rule, they took
a look at it and quite frankly, uh, you know,

(25:12):
they determined that they didn't see enough that they would
call it. Even though it is interference, it didn't rise
to the level of what happened in New Orleans last year,
and and it's it's just further represents how bad this
new rule was. Um, you know, and you know, I
look at I think of Al Riveron and and if

(25:33):
he'd have said, yes, it's interference, but it doesn't rise
at a level that would have been easier or I
think people to take. But you know he's been pretty consistent.
Let's remember last week Seattle San Francisco end up the
game a huge miss in the end zone. San Francisco
committed past interference, wasn't called on the field and wasn't
reviewed in replay. Um, they looked at it and didn't

(25:55):
feel it was enough. So what what is pure and
simple and easy to see is that the league in
New York does not want to use replay to reofficiate
the play. It's going to have to be so huge
and so egregious that it's either going to stay with

(26:16):
what's called on the field or and really not much
happening and replay if it's not all right, I'm first off,
I'm trademarking. Does it rise to the level so everybody
will have to pay me seven bucks every time that
said going. And I must say that my glass of
wine always rises to the level. But it should be
even take my first sip, man, that's a damn endorsement

(26:38):
line right there. If ever there was, I could see
you staring at the camera and raising your glass to
me there, Mike, as you said that. All right. So
the other one, obviously Jadevian Clowney Carson wentz. Look, it
doesn't bring him back, but the explanation that he hadn't
given himself up and he was a runner just didn't
fly for me. Well, he hadn't given himself up. He

(26:59):
was being tackled. Um. So he's going to the ground
and and he's listen, he's almost on the ground. If
he's not, but that you just cannot do what Clowney did.
And the the interesting thing to me, and it's always
the same way with video. If you look at that
in the slow motion, doesn't look that bad. You look
at it in real time. He takes a shot, He

(27:21):
takes a shot, and he gets him in the helmet. Um,
and clearly it should have been called. Now he not
going to affect the fact that he was hurt. But
you know, I mean the penalty is going to add
fifty yards, but uh, you know, to me, it is
a foulon And you know Clowney has got history. He's
got history with the Eagles. You know he put Nickpole's
out last year in Week sixteen, when he delivered a

(27:43):
blow to the stern um with the crown of his helmet.
He was called for roughing the pastor. He paid forty
dollars and a fine for it. So you have just
some guys that are the depe tendency to be overly aggressive.
And and I guess that it's probably true when he
says he wasn't trying to hurt him, But I think

(28:06):
I would be lying to myself if I was going
to say that I don't think he was trying to
punish him, because I do think he was trying to
punish him. And I think it is a foul. Yeah,
he led with his helmet and you know, to try
to tack him. I get it, But this is this
is what surprises me about it, Mike, is that I
get that. I could disagree with the past interference, but
I understand because look, this is how the rule has

(28:28):
been adjudicated. We really don't want to overturn things unless
it's agregious. I could not like it, but I understand it.
The whole year, the last three years, the NFL has
been about you lead with the crown of your helmet,
and we are especially on a quarterback, you're gonna get
flagged for it. And this is exactly what happened. And
they missed it. And I scratched my head, going okay,
it was out of quarterback. It was clearly a penalty

(28:50):
lad with his helmet and this didn't get called. That's
what baffles me. And I think, you know, when you
look at it, and really this is a place that
not many people have talked about, but you know, Josh
Allen and overtime, I mean, he took a vicious hit
near the sideline and there's no question that the defender
lowered his head and hit him with the helmet, almost
helmet the helmet, and and that's that was a foul

(29:12):
too and wasn't called. You know, it looks so easy
and slow motion. I will have to say that that
you know, in real time, you know, it's it's it's
it's a much It's a very difficult call to make.
But you know, I've been the one that you know,
has been kind of saying now ever since the a
f last year. Why this new rule and why this

(29:33):
focus on pass interference when we outified the system that
really kind of takes care of, you know, personal fouls,
you know, players safety fouls. And why not have this
guy judge that could take a look at that hit
on Clowney and in real time see at the first
replay and add the penalty on what about the hit
to Josh Allen who could jump in and say, you know, hey, listen,

(29:57):
Alan got blown up helmet the to the helmet and
that's a that's a illegal use of the helmet foul.
Let's add fifteen yards. Let's let's protect players, and if
if the wrong call is made, then let's let this
sky judge take it off. I mean, I'd rather put
more focus quite frankly, on player's safety issues on replay

(30:19):
than pass interference because I'll tell you pass interferences there's
too much judgment involved. And it that rule was doomed
for failure. When you have one standard that you want
used to call pass interference on the field by the
officials and another one and replay a different standard. Well,
I mean I feel back for out Ribran. He was doomed.

(30:41):
He was set up to fail. I mean, it's the
call itself is so subjective, and then you add a
second standard to it. It was just a horrible rule.
You can fall on Twitter at Mike Pereira, that is
at Mike Pereira, former VP of Officiating in the NFL,
current rules analyst at Fox Sports and Old Ways has
his wine rise to the level he needs it at.

(31:03):
Mike has always Buddy appreciated my friend. Enjoy the week.
We'll talk to you next week. Appreciate it. Great stuff
from Mike on both of those rules on on the
Kyle Rudolph and the Carson Wentz. Something will get into
coming up later on in the show. Great stuff, but
straight ahead, everybody at the top of the NFL Draft
today had a great day today. Why we'll tell you

(31:26):
that's coming up next. Jason Smith Mike Harmon Fox Sports Radio.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific Fox Sports Radio. The Jason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike Harmon live from the Geico Studios.

(31:46):
And we'll have another angle on the Tom Brady New
England Patriots End of the Era coming up in about
fifteen minutes because there's something coming off this game, this
entire series, entire season, rather for the page that people
aren't talking about coming off the loss of the Titans.
Tom Brady has never been hotter. Oh no, no, I can.
I can usually say that is that is not the case.

(32:09):
Gotta wait to Otaco Viola declared for the NFL today.
Alabama quarterback says, I'm going and something we talked about
last week, a decision that he needed to make because
the NFL wants him now. His stock is very low
at a situation he has had because of his injury.

(32:30):
Is his hip gonna respond? He hasn't played right now,
it's low, But the NFL Draft is three and a
half months from now. He's got plenty of time to
get the hit better, plenty of time for scouts and
teams to watch tape of him and go, oh, this
is the guy who was responsible for seventy four touchdowns
and just nine turnovers in two years. Okay, I get it,
I get it. He will rise up and you are

(32:52):
kidding yourself if you think he's gonna go outside the
top three. That is just not happening. Quarterbacks were eyes.
Quarterbacks go early it's a quarterback league. Any mock draft
that says, well, I have two, a ton of Baola
going number eight or not not happening. Two is not
getting out of the top three. Is he going one overall? No,
Joe Burrow, with the year he has had proving what

(33:14):
he can do and what he can do to great defenses,
he's the flavor of the moment. I get it. The
Bengals will take him at number one. But two is
gonna be the next guy off the board. Is he
gonna come off the board at number two? Maybe not,
but he will come off in the top three. Because
even if you're picking and you're not taking him at three,

(33:36):
let's just say you don't want to, it doesn't matter
because someone's going to trade up, and they're going to
trade up to get to A. Because here's the way
the draft order goes, right, Bengals pick first, alright, fine,
they're gonna go with Joe Burrow. Redskins pick second. I'd
pick two if I was the Redskins, because who would
you rather have Dwayne Haskins or two? Atma Viola, it's

(33:57):
pretty easy. You'd rather have to A. Plus, it's a
new age Ron Rivera is coming in that you doesn't
need to be sold on Dwayne Haskins. As we've seen
in the past, just last year, you can have a
franchise quarterback like the Cardinals had in Josh Rosen. You
can turn the page on him and no one's gonna
go crazy. Would anybody go nuts in Washington if the
Redskins said, you know what, sorry, Dwayne Haskins, we're gonna

(34:19):
move you another team. We're gonna take two and number
two overall, No, everybody would go crazy because he is
a franchise quarterback. Well, as long as you can get
all the blinking red x is off of his wacky
doctor's game operation shut Like if if those all go
away and you gotta clean bill health. I think given
the injury history, that's the only potential red flag when

(34:41):
you just drafted a quarterback last year, and given Ron
Rivera's love of defense, and let's call it what it is,
but that that's that's where the potential is. I mean,
he's got three months to decide whether Dwayne Askins his guy.
The tape is not gonna be pretty. That's gonna have
to be a nice cell job by Toy and Askins
and Terry McLaren to keep him at the helm. So

(35:04):
let's just say he doesn't go. I would take him
at two. In a second. You got the Lions picking third,
I would easily take to UH and ship off Matthew
Stafford because there's many teams would say, oh hey, Matthew
Stafford for a few years. Okay, theotomy's let it. Let
him find his other places. I can see that you
got the Giants picking at four. They should also take
to A, but they won't because they have to be right.

(35:26):
And Dave Gentleman's got to be right about Daniel Jones. Well,
but this is a place where for the Giants, you've
got a lot of other needs. Right, you got a
couple of good skill position guys, you got a bad defense,
You need some help on the old line. You've got
a lot of need. So if you can get a
team to package a couple of first round picks for
you to get to number four, you know that's the thing.
Four is not gonna be enough because the team's right

(35:48):
behind them. The Dolphins they'll draft to UH, the Chargers
they'll draft to unless Tom Brady comes, and the Panthers
they'll draft to UH. Then you get to eight. The Cardinals, No,
they have Kyler Murray. The Jaguars are picking too high,
they're already. The Browns have Baker Mayfield, the Jets have
Sam Darna. Did you getting to the point where and
he's not getting out of there? Four is too high

(36:09):
or is too low to think you can make a
trade and move up with the Giants and to a
tongue of Iola is gonna be there. You gotta be
at two or at three to get him, because he
is going to rise. He is remember again, three and
a half months between now in the NFL Draft. The
draft isn't tomorrow, and two is not gonna limp onto
the stage. Hold up a jersey. You have so much time.

(36:32):
He will get a clean bill of elf. The surgery
went well, they will again. They will look at the
tape of what he did. And he was a number
one overall pick coming into this year. So if that's
the case, you're he's going to rise. It's there's not
going to be a point where he drops. And you
can't sit there and think at five we're gonna we're
gonna get him. We're gonna know you're sitting at five,

(36:54):
you think only we'll get Justin Herbert at five, and
do you really want that guy or do you want
to You can any of these teams I say here
in the top eight, who would you rather have toa
or your quarterback? They'll say to a Bengals, to a Redskins,
to a Lions, to a Giants, to h But I understand,
we told you Daniel Jones is so good, so we
have to stick with him. Dolphins to A Chargers, to

(37:17):
UH Panthers to all of those teams would rather have
two within their quarterbacks. So there's gonna be a big
race for him. And with teams picking in the top seven,
top eight, you're basically saying, all right, we're gonna move up,
and it's a couple of second round picks. It's gonna
be the kind of trade the Jets made two years
ago to move up for Sam Donald's gonna be a
first round pick, then a couple of seconds, and that's
the cost of doing business. So many of these teams

(37:38):
can move up, but four is too low. You gotta
be two or three. And I wouldn't be surprised if
someone jumped to two just to ensure they would get
just to guarantee it sir, I think you've not quite
the Jalen Ramsey Hall. But I think if the medicals
check out and you've got three months to see progress
right and and have extensive charts, and if I'm toa

(37:58):
that's the one thing I'm new. And every week I've
got every doctor poking and prod in me to give updates.
Here's my range of motion, Here's how this is progressing,
here's the strength chart and everything. Because it's it's gonna
be a bit of a cell because you've got a
guy with a number of surgeries already on the docket
as well. Before the hip Twitter at how about a frescup,

(38:19):
Mike gets swollen, dull. But in the end, he's a
quarterback on a quarterback. Quarterbacks are gonna go hot. He's
gonna be thell. Can you imagine two end? Sam Darnald,
He's way better than Donald Twitter stop, way better stop.
He could be Hill, Tom Brady and the Pats Next
on Fox. Be sure to catch live editions of The

(38:40):
Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern,
seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I
Heart Radio AP Fox Sports Radio. Welcome inside our two
of The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike
Harmon got Jason locking for stopping buying about twenty minutes
all the latest NFL news. Where's Tom Brady headed? What's

(39:04):
going on with Saints fans? Now? Because every year is
gonna end with a heartbreaking penalty or non penalty at
the end of a game in the playoffs. You know
what played better but should always be a one possession,
one play bleeping game. You know, Sean Payton and Drew Brees.
Something that before we get to Tom Brady a second,
something that really I was happy about this weekend that

(39:24):
was kind of stunning. I went one in three on
my picks this weekend. I went one and three, oh
for four. That's okay, But it's all right, no, no,
it's it's miserable two and two against spread. Ye, well
did you bet? Did you lose money? Now? You're okay,
but light American and trust me, But I I can't
trust this guy. But I went one in three and

(39:45):
I didn't get the Patriots, I didn't get the Bills,
and I wound up getting the Vikings, and I didn't
get the Eagles right in order those games. But it's okay.
Because nobody in my timeline was yelling at me, going, ah,

(40:08):
you miss what everybody was. You called it the Vikings.
I can't believe it all you're so smart, I'm going, yeah,
it's like it's the only one anybody paid attention to us.
I kept saying, Hey, the Vikings, this is gonna be it,
because it happened exactly as I thought. The defense was
gonna hold them down. You were gonna get a steady
diet at Dalvin Cook and Kirk Cousins was gonna make
enough place. This was a Vikings offense that was back

(40:30):
at full capacity, and you know, the the whole offensive
pass interference thing aside, That's exactly how the game went.
The Saints had trouble moving the football, and the Vikings
they put everything together and they played a great game.
And it was like that was the only pick I needed.
It was like, yeah, you're so great. I'm like, but
I was one of the no, yes, yeah, this is it.

(40:51):
I didn't pick any other game. That was the only
game I picked was the Vikings. All that matters. You
believed in Kirk Cousins when everybody else didn't. That was,
by the way, they'd all so think they won their
Super Bowl, so it's well. And the other thing is,
did I really go one in three? Because I don't
think you can. I I don't think I need to
be on the hook for the Eagles because Carson Wentz
got hurt. I'm gonna take I'll take off, gonna take

(41:13):
I'm gonna take that off the board. I mean they
had the Bills, I mean McDermott and at the end
of that game made absolutely no sense. So I'm not
taking that game. That was just alternatively alternately great and
peewee football slash old school video game. I'm gonna run
really far back and then he didn't even wing it.
I'm not I'm not taking that game because that game

(41:35):
was just so stupid that it was clearly worthy of
being the first game of the weekend on the Saturday.
By the end of it was I love DeShawn Watson,
and again he should be the first interview and the
guy that you spend all your time with your camera
angles instead of longingly looking at J. J. Watt. But
that's a whole other thing. People like they do, they
love J. J. Watt, But DeShawn Watson's the only thing

(41:58):
that saved that game. Otherwise it should have been that
tie and both coaches should have been fired. Oh, I
mean one team didn't really have to advance. We could
have just Hey, you're lucky, you getta buy neither of
these teams. You deserve to move on, Get to move on.
I'll take the New England L. Even though I said,
Derrick Henry is gonna have a huge day, but it's
not going to be another wouldn't be able to stop him.
And I said to Ryan Tandell's not gonna win this game.

(42:19):
And he didn't. He was terribly through for made one
throw that matter, right, But I said, to pick up
a first down exactly, that's the way one play. Make
one play and don't throw three picks. And he did it.
Get to the sideline, just put it there and let
him catch it. And I said, Derrick Henry is gonna
have a big day, but it's just not gonna be enough.
It's not good. And and I'll take the L on

(42:39):
that game. But Buffalo is just stupid, so I can't.
I can't. I can't take you know, be penalized for
some for picking a stupid team. No, and and with
Carson Wentz getting hurt, Okay, I can't. I can't bank
on that either. Josh McCown though, man, he bawled out
forget it shouldn't have been there. Should they couldn't finish
and drive Miles Sanders leaves one on the carpet as

(43:03):
he's being shadowed. Everything was gonna be. Everything he said
for that game was right. The should have trouble moving
the football. They weren't on a score. They couldn't run
the football. Russell Wilson's not gonna do it all by himself.
But you injured Carson went in the middle of the game,
and when he or in the beginning of the game,
and now suddenly you got to do it with a
quarterback who was forty eight years old and and was

(43:23):
retired twice. That's that's gonna do it for you. Everything
else was right except for that, So I'm not But
I will take the L in the Patriots because I
I didn't even though I said watch out for Derrick Henry,
Ryan Tannel's not gonna win this game. I thought they
would have enough. And then I'll take the L, take
care of business at home, and then probably get blasted
in the next time. Minnesota. Everybody loved me. They love me.

(43:45):
They love me. It's awesome. I'm like, oh, it's got
one right. That great game was so insane towards the end.
Our guy, Mike Prayer, we talked to him a little
while ago when Day threw to him to try to
explain it, and Troy Aman does it in the booth,
he goes, you can't. I can't take that one back.
I don't want it. But the Patriots game, I want

(44:06):
to take this conversation in different direction because this is
something that no one's talked about. When it comes to
the fallout of the Patriots losing to the Titans in
the season being over, There's been so much attention on
Tom Brady and what's next for him, write so much attention,
and we talked about this the beginning of the show.
Is that listen, you don't need any more evidence than

(44:27):
Tom Brady yesterday saying I don't know what the future holds,
Bill Belichick saying I don't know what the future holds,
and Bob Crafts saying, well, I hope Tom comes back
or retires, right, that's what you're getting from everybody. In fact,
when when Brady said this yesterday, you knew that he
was gone from New England. I love the Patriots. I
mean they obviously, uh you know, it's the greatest organization,

(44:47):
and you know, playing for Mr Craft all these years
and for coach Belichick. I mean there's there's nobody who's
had a better career, I would say than me. Just
being with them, I'm very blessed, and I don't know
what the future looks like, so I'm not going to
predict it. Yeah, you opted out of your contract. You
could have had a contract for next year you didn't
want one. Is not where I now. I need to
get paid thirty five million dollars a year because he's

(45:09):
never been that guy. He has always taken less money
so the team can have more money to throw around
at guys like Richard Seymour or Teddy Bruce Ki or
as Sante Samuel whoever it is to keep to keep
everything going. That's always been how it's been. So you
can't listen to anything they say, because all they're doing
is doing the speak to try to keep the real

(45:29):
story away, and that is Brady doesn't like Belichick, doesn't
like Josh McDaniels. There's been tension between all of them.
Brady wouldn't have pushed himself away. Belichick would none of
this would have happened. If Tom Brady wanted to be back,
he would say, I want to come back. If Belichick
wanted Brady back, he would say, I want Tom back,
no no questions about it. I want Tom back. If

(45:51):
Bob Kraft wanted Tom Brady back, he would say, no questions,
I want him back. He wouldn't say I want him
back or I hope he retires. He would say, no,
we want Tom back. Where everything, because that's what you
do for a guy that's meant that much to your organization,
that is that big of a quarterback, and it's still
pretty bleep and talented. But the fact that no one
has said it means that they're all ready to move on.

(46:13):
And this is what gets into my point about what
people are missing about this part of the Patriots is
that this season for New England, it was it was
sort of like a whatever happens happens year. All right.
They started out, they were rolling through everybody. Defense that
was the best defense we had seen in the NFL
in a long time. Scoring defense was amazing. There ain't

(46:36):
no but it just they just didn't give us the
sense it was a super Bowl or bust year like
it normally is for New England. When they were ripping
through everybody, it was well, we have issues. We have this,
we have that. The offense is not very good. They played,
but each week it wasn't like we saw a team
that was dominant or was trying to get better. I

(46:59):
didn't see any I didn't see the Patriots try to
do different things when the offense wasn't working because they
couldn't score points. Let's see something different. We got, hey,
Josh McDaniels, come up with something here week eleven, week twelve,
because we're really not moving the football as much. I
didn't see any of that. It was like it was
a giveaway year, like they were working on next year.
Next year is what really counts, because for Belichick, he's

(47:21):
gonna be excited because there's gonna be a new quarterback
in and that's what he's setting this team up for.
They didn't go crazy and free agency to bring anybody in.
You know, they didn't. They didn't try to make the
team way better at the trade dead. They didn't try
to do anything when they when they saw that, okay,
this could be our last year. It's like they took
this year for being Hey, whatever happens, happens, but we're
really focused on next year. Brady is focused on next year.

(47:43):
He's got his house up for sale months ago, his
trainer put his house up for sale months ago, opted
out of his contract the end of last year. It's like,
this season was just where we're gonna play it and
what however it turns out it If we win, great,
but the focus is really on next year. I just
never got the sense that this season doing everything you
can to win the Super Bowl. And I don't mean

(48:03):
practicing every day and looking at film. Of course that
was something, but I just mean overall the organization, Hey,
how are we trying to make this team better and
do X, Y and Z and do all of these things.
I never got that sense from them this year. And
so now the season's over and it's like, Okay, now
the season is over. Now the work begins because it's
about next year. Well, because you had a couple of
splashes in the receiving department, right here comes Josh Gordon,

(48:25):
back waiting on him to be the player he was. Injuries,
whatever the off field issues were that eventually led him
to Seattle and led him do another suspension. Certainly there
and then we've talked way too much about Antonio Brown,
so I'm not gonna belabor the point there. But he
was in for a cup of coffee and a touchdown

(48:46):
and went on his Mary way. If he'd been able
to be the guy they needed, I think the offense
would have been just fine. You would have had you
playmaker and those secondary guys, those young receivers could have
fallen back into minimal roles and been just fine. You
tried to bring in Mohammed Sanu, hoping that for all
those years that we watched him as a member of

(49:06):
the Bangles and then with the Falcons, that he was
more than maybe the stats were, and he just didn't
get these same opportunities. Well, we always hear about how
difficult it is to learn the Patriot Way, i e.
The playbook, and what it takes to gain the trust
of Tom Brady. He watched a number of times over
the course of the back end of the season. Right,

(49:28):
those young receivers he double clutch and try to push
the ball back towards Edelman or White or whoever was
because he didn't trust those guys. Right, They betrayed him
time again, time and again with just bad route running
in their hands being we were terrible at times and
in Kiel Harry, their first hround pick, doesn't see the

(49:49):
field of mid season. So all the things you thought
should have fixed the offense didn't. And I don't know
how much more inventiveness there could have been. The offensive
line was bad at some point. You just can't change
person now. And like everybody here in Los Angeles with
Lebron James, perhaps maybe you need a reboot, right, You
needed an off shows in where there wasn't a deep
run in the playoffs, another four games of hits and

(50:12):
everything that goes with that, and they didn't have. But
it was still We're not this is not a classically
great page. We're still eight and four. You know, you're
still it's not like you're you're meandering along. But they
made moves, they got Harry back, and it wasn't enough
to jettison them or propel them. I should say to

(50:33):
that next level, right, because Sony Michelle ended up with
a respectable rushing total. How many of those yards were impactful,
I don't know, and I'll trust that to the analytics
guys that really want to tell you the value of
each yard gain, right, because he was still at nine
hundred for the year, which in this day and age,
isn't too bad. What do you have thirteen one thousand

(50:55):
yard rushers this year? But that's not a bad total.
But when you don't have a go to wide receiver
outside of your broken Julian Edelman, it's a tough road.
But to your point, what are we gonna do to
make how do we adjust, how do we evolve during
the season to make it. It's like we're just putting
in our time and the season is gonna end when

(51:16):
it ends. If it ends with the Super Bowl, great,
if it doesn't, great, and but next year that's it.
That's what I'm gonna be re energized. Well, that was
one of the things that came out of Peter King's
Monday morning quarterback was a quick conversation he had with
Brady where he didn't feel like he had that anger
and overriding sadness. Right, obviously wanted to keep playing, but

(51:36):
it seemed kind of relieved that now I'm done. Now
I'm gonna go play someplace else. Either that or just
that this season that didn't have any big push because
the other thing out of New England, you're not getting
the emotion and the lunacy that you're getting all these
other locker rooms from the coach or from their quarterbacks
or whatever Patriots. You don't. You don't really get to

The Jason Smith Show with My bis friend Mike Harmon
Live from the Geico Studio. You've got people angry on

(53:01):
Twitter and people are so mad. What who's mad at
me about? Mike? Dwayne has a producer executive producer of
hang On, hang On? Let me find this right here,
hang on, because I just really blew my chance of
being on a lot of different shows. Uh, the executive
producer hang On of where she's a producer. I don't
know that she's the executive producer. Well, but she's producer

(53:22):
of all of these shows. The Hollie Clarkson, Kelly Clarkson Show,
the Wendy Williams Show, Katie Kirk. You might end up on. Yeah,
you can end up there as part of some expose
for eating too many white castles or something. Yeah, she's
a producer on Inside Edition al right, which I'm not
getting on because I'm not scandalous, Uh, Katie Corrick, Wendy Williams.
And I liked the Wendy Williams Show or the Kelly

(53:43):
Clarkson Show, and she's upset, saying I had a dumbass
take on Dwayne Haskins. Well, you know what, we live
in a different world than we lived in a year ago,
where now it's okay to move on from a quarterback
you take in the first round, especially when a new
head coach comes in and he wants to put in
his new system. You want your own guy. And look,
let's face it, to a tongue of viola, there's a

(54:06):
reason why he was projected to be the number one
overall pick in the NFL draft going into this year.
What did he do to to lose it? While he
heard his hip? All right, Well, in three months he's
gonna get a clean bill of elf and everybody's gonna
look at the tape and they're gonna say, oh, look,
how good to it is? Alright, awesome, Hey, let's take
him and to a tone of viola, places out and

(54:29):
projects to be better than anybody any of the top
seven teams picking in the draft. Half, I mean, really,
would you rather have two or Dwayne Haskins? Me, I'm
being honest, would you rather have two or Dwayne Haskins?
If Haskins came lit the world on fire. Right, he's
our franchise guy. All right, great, but you want to
over him. You want to over anybody you have in Miami.
In Los Angeles you had Philip Rivers, who going to

(54:50):
the Hall of Fame? To two is the guy I
gotta have to a Here Detroit, you've had Matthew Stafford.
You paid him about three quarters of a billion dollars
in salary. Who would you rather have at this point
to it's ti for something new. Stafford's not one, some
new kind of energy with the team. Let's figure it out.
Any of these teams you'd rather have a franchise guy?
Why is he available and not the number one overall

(55:10):
pick because of the hip issue? But you know what,
that can be a help. And that's why all these
teams picking in the top seven are doing backflips right now,
because hey, there's another quarterback out there for us, and
we are quarterback hungry, or we can somebody's gonna move
up into our spot right now. If you're the Lions
and don't want to, uh, well, okay, come up and
get him where. We'll pick at six and we'll take
two of your second rounders. At least you want to

(55:32):
come up to two together. If you're the Redskins, Okay, great,
you know, yeah, you give us your pick at five,
and then you give us a first round pick next
year in two more second round picks, that's you want
to pick second. Everybody's doing backflips. It's not like I
can't believe that to a go to the NFL has
been met with with any kind of reaction. That's uh
to what I mean? Really? I mean, people forget how

(55:53):
good this kid is. Yeah, I think part of it
is unless you're telling me that he's immediately going into
the clock on necrosis is like three years. Right, If
you're telling me that that like I got a three
year window to maximizm. Okay done? That sounds like something
bad from a horror movie. It's hip necrosis. That's what
the vampires do to you. I mean, that's the bout

(56:13):
Jackson world, right, I mean, where all of a sudden
you just can't and then you become a power hitter
and somehow still play through, which is amazing, But for
for two uh, given what his role was and how
he played at Alabama, if he's going to be right saven,
if it's in a year, every one of those teams
gonna line up and say, okay, we may we got

(56:35):
a guy that's serviceable for a year. Now we move on.
I mean, the one that just keeps popping back up
is can you convince Philip to come hang around for
one more year? While TWA gets right in the new stadium,
twitter at, how about a Fresca? Mike gets swollen Dome
joining us now on the hotline. CBS Sports NFL Insider
Extraordinaire getting set for a ten thousand word preview of

(56:55):
the Syracuse lacrosse season, Alex Jason Locking for what's happening? Jay, Hey,
Lax is right around the corner. It won't be Syracuse
Lax for me, though. It'd be more like Howson University Lax,
Loyola College Lax, Johns Hopkins University lacks like that's you
know that that's like doable, that those are all like

(57:17):
five minutes from my house. I would not go up
to the dome for US Syracuse. I don't know what
you'd have to give me. I don't know what the
inducement would have to be, but it would have to
be profound. I like that, Jason Lock and fort Look,
I could be a great insider as long as it's
five minutes from my house. Like I'm you know, we're
not like a huge lacrosse family. We're a huge baseball family.

(57:39):
But we do go like a Virginia or Syracuse is
playing at Hopkins or at Loyola or at Towson, Like
we'll go. Honestly, the most I see of Bill Belichick
is between like February and May twentie because he's all over,
like he's all across junkie and he's best friends with

(58:00):
the Johns Hopkins lacrosse coach. So we'll drive down to
Charles Street and we'll go to you know games, and
we'll see him. He'll be all over the place. Oh
so you're gonna get the scoop when you know what.
But I'll be him, like I'll say, hey, coach, you
can ask this fifty different bleeping ways. I don't even

(58:20):
say anything. Like my kids are like, who's that? Who's that? Grandpa?
Grandpa thinking about him when the lacrosse sticks starts whipping
balls at locking for as he comes. You know. Alright, well,
let's let's start here with with Belichick that obviously all
the discussion is going to be about Brady and what
is next for him? And look, you've said many times

(58:42):
before in the show that everything you have points to
the Chargers. Everything is still pointing to the Chargers for
Tom Brady if he leaves. Yeah, I mean, like you know,
Robert Kraft can be exceedingly uh like he he can

(59:02):
coerce you or you know, boon doggle you or swindle
you or convince you that you have to be here,
and he's very persuasive. But I strongly believe that Tom
Brady is at a point in his career and his
life where he's very interested to see what's like, what's

(59:25):
beyond the yellow Bick road, Like if I just walk
over yonder and I get out of you know their grip,
what awaits for me? And what would this team or
that team or this owner or this GM be willing
to unfurl to woo me in a way that I
haven't been mooed in a long time. And you know what,

(59:49):
Everything comes to an end, There is always closure. Nothing
lasts forever. And man, we've got no wide receivers except
for Adamman, who's, like thirty six said, gets doubled and
gets taken out of games and is breaking down and
we've got no tight ends to speak of. And I
like Sony Michelle, but man, he's really been banged up

(01:00:11):
to last you know, nine to twelve months, and our
offensive line is and Belichick would rather draft defensive players
than offensive players, and he's always going to defer to
that because that's his sort of reset. That's who he is.
He's a defensive guy at heart. And maybe they need
a twenty two year olds who can run all over

(01:00:33):
the place and extend plays and compensate for the lack
of personnel. But at my age forty three, I can't
do that, and I couldn't do that in my prime.
And I'm kind of sick of being asked to, you know,
do more with less, and I'm kind of sick of
taking hometown discounts. And wow, well when I do look
at the Chargers man Eckler, that's like he's like a

(01:00:57):
Danny Woodhead and his prime, except even better. And Hunter
he's not grounk, but he's Aaron. And man, look at
these two outside receivers like Williams and Keenan Allen. Man,
I haven't had that, you know, since I hadn't ran
any Moss in his prime and the offensive line isn't amazing,

(01:01:18):
but it's good enough and if they invest a little
more in it. So I mean, like we got to
be real about all this and everything comes to an end.
Joe Montana played for the Chiefs. Emmett Smith played for
the Cardinals. Jerry Rice played for the Seahawks. You know,
far played for the Jets. Like this big boy stuff,

(01:01:38):
and sometimes guys want to show that they can do
it outside of the cocoon that they were brought up in,
and sometimes teams don't know what they got till it's gone.
Jesson Smith still doing the yub dub dance. Jason Smith,
Mike Carmon here from the guy got Fox Sports Radio
Studios on the hall with a CBS Sports, NFL inside
or a buddy Jason locking for. Find him on Twitter,

(01:02:00):
Jason locking for. So the Cowboys finally locked the doors
on Jason Garrett and bring Mike McCarthy in after a sleepover,
and he is going to bring in Mike Nolan to
be his defensive coordinator. Watch really the upgrade here over
Jason Garrett. I do think that that, you know, Mike

(01:02:26):
is an upgrade over Jason. I think Jason was sort
of a product of the whole Cowboys narcissism. Uh, they're
they're innate hype, they're sort of overt self belief that
goes beyond what they really are there. I I don't

(01:02:48):
care if there was ten openings for head coaches right now.
I don't think anybody's reaching out to Jason Garrett being
like I need that guy. I want that guy, and
I gotta have that guy. I just I don't believe
anybody has looked at him for a long time other
than you know, Jerry. So I want to see the

(01:03:11):
totality of McCarthy staff, Like, I'm not going to sit
here and tell you that that's a slam duncan, that
they're gonna now win five straight you know, NFC East titles,
even though the NFC stinks. Um, I don't know, Like
is he keeping tilling more? Isn't he? I wouldn't. Maybe
he will, he shouldn't, But who's he going to get

(01:03:32):
who's better than him? I do. I do have concerns,
and I don't think that this is like, you know,
an immediate quick fix or anything close to it. But
I also don't think that if Mike McCarthy was coaching
that team, they would have found a way to lose
that horrific division the way they did this year, and

(01:03:54):
that had to be the end for Jason Garrett. And personally,
I believe that's the last time you'll ever see Jason
Garrett on the NFL sideline again. But maybe I'm wrong.
All Right, So now if that's taken, and now here's
the Cowboys with Mike McCarthy. Now the Giants have to
figure things out. So do the Cleveland Browns? What do
they do? What do the Giants do? What are the

(01:04:15):
Browns do to fill their head coach? And gi Giants
better get that rule. If the Giants don't get that rule,
they're in a they're in the hole. I mean, like
you're gonna hire the Patriots special teams coach. I mean,
just go look at I mean you and and maybe
you'll hire Eric Bannimy. And you know, Eric Bienny might
turn out to be an awesome NFL head coach, but man,

(01:04:36):
you just had maca Doo and you just had Shermer,
Like you're really gonna go for another offensive, minded, unproven guy,
um without a pedigree with that job? I mean, and
and maybe look, maybe the enemy saves them all, saves Mara,
saves gentlemen, you know. But I would have extreme reservations

(01:05:00):
about that. Like I think the Giants and the Browns
in particular need to hire a coach who has done
the job and done it well, whether at a Power
five conference or in the NFL. They need proven commodities,
and I know they've had trouble getting proven commodities to
go there in the past. But maybe recruit differently, Maybe

(01:05:21):
change your sales pitch. Maybe be willing to say, hey,
we're the New York Giants, or we're not what you
used to be, so we'll give you anything you want
to come here. Not Hey, let's let getleman come out
there and you know, act the full at a press
conference a couple of times and pretend that he's now,
you know, the senior analytics. I mean, I don't even

(01:05:43):
I can't even account for explain what these teams do
and how they reached the points that they reach. But
there's a reason that the Browns and the Giants are
now sort of like simpatico, right, like we think of
them in the same way. They're trolling the same waters
for the same candidates. They're firing people every eighteen months

(01:06:06):
like that's that's who they are, that's their d n A.
And that comes from ownership, and those trends and tendencies
don't change until or unless ownership realizes we really are
this bad. And I'm not sure that either of those
franchises really truly understand the plight that they're in. And

(01:06:28):
one of them better get Matt Roll and one of
them better get Josh McDaniels. But you know what, they
might not get either of them, and it's a big
drop off after that. And I just feel like the
position that they're in to hire a completely unproven guy
would be a big, big problem. You can fall on

(01:06:50):
Twitter at Jason Locking for that is at Jason Locking
for a CBS Sports NFL Insider, and I should say
inside or on anything five minutes from his house as well.
J has always buddy appreciated my friend. We'll talk to
you next week. You got it. Let's go John to
great stuff from Jason Lock and forth we'll break down, uh,

(01:07:12):
the latest coaching news, some interesting things he said, and
what is now next after Mike McCarthy goes to the Cowboys.
That's coming up in nineties seconds. But first, be sure
to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app.
You know, and and how much do you want to bet?

(01:07:34):
Chris Perman sitting around right now, going boy, Joe Judge
getting interviewed by the Giants. Hopefully Joe Judge gets the
Cleveland job, so we can say and t J Joe
Judge Browns era has begun. That's pretty good. Yeah, that'll work,
Judge Comma, Joe Brown's era has begun, d J. Yeah,

(01:07:58):
it's get really kind of frightened. He comes the Judge
to New York. What are you a New York Post
head writer? Are you? Burman? Now? Gavel on the back?
You know, the jury is out on the judge being
hired by the Giants trying to to lend for Jason

(01:08:19):
McIntyre's headlines today. Right, that's pretty much it. Yeah, so
you know it's you hear Jason Lackinforah who talked to
a few minutes ago, but was, Hey, the Giants better
get Matt Rule, the Browns better get Josh McDaniels. And
look at all these these things may happen. This shows
you we're gonna get back into Mike McCarthy coming up
at the top of the hour. This shows you that

(01:08:41):
this candidate pool is really shallow, and no team had
the sense of urgency needed to go out and get
Mike McCarthy or to go get their guy. It's it
was almost like they expected, well, at some point someone's
gonna say, hey, I'm interested, Like Jim Harbaugh's age is
gonna start calling around saying hey, you know what, uh yeah,
my client's looking to leave Michigan if you want them,

(01:09:03):
Or Lincoln Riley suddenly his age is gonna call and say, hey,
Lincoln might want to make the jump to the national
Footballer Like they kept waiting for this to happen, like
somebody else is going to reveal themselves, and you have
to realize that, Okay, if this is the pool of
guys you're dealing with and you don't get one of
those guys you're sitting at the back of and oh boy,
we screwed that up. But Tom Pella Sero is now

(01:09:24):
reporting that the Browns have asked permission to talk to
Jim Schwartz for crying out wound Jims Viviana Viviana VI,
what are we doing here? Jim Schwartz does love eighties
hair band music that I do have a Schwartz I
do like that, and we'll do some headbanging. I'll go

(01:09:47):
buy us wigs and we'll have a grand old time.
That guy shouldn't be your new head in that locker room.
It's like teams are now Suddenly it's gotten through them.
Oh wait, there's not many guys out there. We better
go get somebody. Coaches make as much money as they
do here or more. They have life to leave. In
that rule, you really have to kiss his ass to
make him want to come to the pro. You would

(01:10:09):
think that a team like the Giants, and that's the
Jason Unlocking for is right about. You would think a
team like the Giants, Oh well, we're just gonna open
our door and get anybody we want. No. Now, it's
if we don't get Matt Rule. Who knows. We're gonna
have to try to hire Adam Gates away from the Jets.
Can you imagine? I mean, can you imagine? But I mean,
look that you would think the allure of them, they
couldn't get anybody the Cowboys at least they were, Oh,

(01:10:30):
we got Mike McCarthy, the best guy out there. That's
it Twitter, And how about a Fresco Mike gets swollen dumbson.
You may not like the choices, but when you have
to make a choice, you gotta pick one. And that's
one to grow on. Coming up next, what NFL team
and their star quarterback and head coach are getting a
pass for playoff failure they probably shouldn't be getting. I

(01:10:52):
knew you were gonna play it. No, the answer is
coming up next right here on Fox. Yes, Sir Brownie,
be sure to catch live editions of Jason Smith Show
with Mike Carman weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific,
Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmen
live from the Geico Studios. Well lot more on Mike
McCarthy going to the Cowboys coming up in about ten minutes.

(01:11:14):
But with all the attention the past twenty four hours
on the did Kyle Rudolph push off on the Vikings
game winning touchdown? What has kind of fallen by the
wayside is that this is another year where Drew Brees
and Sean Payton get a pass for coming up short
in the playoffs. Obviously last year, hey, they made the play,

(01:11:38):
they should be able to take the clock all the
way down to kick a field goal. But this is
a Saints team that has been living under the image
of boy, there an overachieving team that they're a They're
an offensive juggernaut that plays well at home, but boy,
you get him outside of outside of New Orleans and

(01:11:58):
they have to play the road. Not as good in that.
And Sean Payton and Drew Brees are both very likable
people and so we kind of give them a pass.
But this is another year where Peyton and Brees have
fallen short, and you know, you take everything into it
with a wide fish eye lens. New Orleans has been
one of the best teams in the NFC the past

(01:12:20):
five years. They have found a way to put together
a really good defense with an offense that is lights out,
and they still haven't found a way to break through again.
It's it's you know, they've not scored enough. The only
time they've won was when their defense was great two
thousand eight. Greg Williams that defense was awesome, right when
they beat the crap out of Brett Farve and the

(01:12:41):
whole beginnings of bounty Gate and everything else. But how
many years has Sean Payton had a dominant offense and
Drew Brees and it's okay, well they won and they
won once, and boy maybe they should be winning a
little bit more. But they don't get the Even Aaron
Rodgers gets criticized more. He's one once been there a
couple of times. Even he gets criticized, right, and he
hangs out with Danna ka Patrick. That gets people he

(01:13:04):
was but okay, well, but in the end it gets
people all angry and and all out of sorts. You know,
you we watched the yub Nubs celebrations against the Patriots, right,
he could say, well, they didn't do everything by the book. Well,
Sean Payton served a year suspension. Should he have? We
can always argue that should have been more on Greg Williams,

(01:13:25):
who has lived to coach and nine other stops. Obviously
I'm exaggerating, but it seems that way at this point.
Should he have been the head coach in Cleveland after
their run last year before Freddie Kitchen's got hired, maybe
maybe that should have been the case. But because they're likable, right,
Drew Brees could be the governor of Louisiana, mayor of
New Orleans. But I mean, and everybody was all up

(01:13:46):
in arms. Why isn't he in the top ten on
this NFL one? Why isn't he there in front of Maria?
Neither one? I mean, he won once, they got one
Super Bowl and it was they should have more. Right
if we're gonna start going down stat aggregation, and right now,
everybody's trying to kill off Tom Brady. Oh, he's washed,
he's terrible. He was three touchdowns per interception, completed six

(01:14:09):
of his passes with nobody except for a broken Julian Edelman,
and he's supposed to go out of the pasture. So
Drew Brees has the best receiver in the game, or
if you throw anything within his wingspan, he catches it.
Do we take a few percentage points off of what
of his completion percentage? Just because of what Michael Thomas

(01:14:30):
is able to do? And all of a sudden, hey, look,
Drew Brees and and Tom Brady season they look pretty
much the same. So okay, he's done too. Is that
what we're gonna do? Or should we start actually blaming
Peyton for mismanagement down the stretch. They had that big
sack right where Cousins could have dumped the ball off,
didn't They get the sack and then and they've got

(01:14:51):
a force of punch right, So it's fourth and twenty
three at two fifty four, they don't call a time out.
They let the clock run all the way down to
to ten before it's punted. Before it settles, we're down
to a minute fifty five. There's a minute you didn't
have with Drew Brees and your offense on. Oh and
by the way, in that playoff game, Taysom Hill is
your best quarterback. He's your most effective passer and best

(01:15:14):
player on the field. All of that, and nobody's going
after New Orleans at all. It's complaining about referees for
the third straight years. How about it doesn't come down
to one play. How about you actually finished the job.
Since two thousand and six, they've won their division six times,
so you're talking about every other year basically they've won

(01:15:36):
their Now they've also had seasons where they were seven
and nine three years in a row, which is like, well,
how did that happen with Drew Brees. But this is
you can't just look but the image of them is
we like those guys, we like Breese, we like Peyton,
and we think of them as well. They're an offensive
team in the try. No, no, no, this is a
team that has been at the top, that has been
in position to win and win big, and they've been

(01:15:57):
as far as the NFC Championship game a couple of times.
You know that that this is where this is where
you have to understand after you look and go all right,
should we be seeing more? Especially when they won the
NFC South each of the last three years, and they
could have won last year if they just buckled down
and not become the two thousand three Cubs, you still
had an opportunity to win that game. Yes, the Paul

(01:16:18):
went against you, lobby about it in competition committee. Go
out and coach, go out and play. Yeah, it's it's
a case of when you have a good reputation, people
will forgive you more and will make excuses more for
you because you have the If you don't have a
good reputation, people will jump right on right now and
go look how under achieving you are looking you're not

(01:16:39):
doing this? Look how bad that says? Look as you
gotta go, this is out there changes have to be made.
So that's they're lucky that they have that reputation because
the Saints just Sean Payton this entire time. Le mean
the entire run with Drew Brees. You went to one
Super Bowl. In the entire run, you had a guy
who done with the top five quarterbacks of all time
in the NFL, and Brees you've been there once and

(01:16:59):
you're gonna got one of the top five. But you
get the great Vegas misdirection of officiating calls at the
end of games. To take away from the criticism, Twitter
at how about a fresca? Mike gets swollen On The
Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmen. Coming up next, what
everybody but the Cowboys missed in the NFL Fox Be

parts of it. Whatever you like. Rate us, give us
five stars. We'll love you forever and ever and never
do it So tonight, the Cowboys finally get their head coach. Alright,
Mike McCarthy has announced as the head coach earlier in

(01:18:05):
the day today, And let me say this first, because
this is you cannot disagree with me on this. I
almost had it right all the way down to the letter,
except who actually they wound up hiring. This is where
this is where I would say, if it was a test,
and and it was a math test and I would
just get an excellent wrong, I would say, wait a minute,

(01:18:27):
I deserve a lot of credit for this, because look,
I got everything right up until the right answer until
I'm until you forgot to carry the one right now.
My teacher would say, well, but you got the answer wrong,
But I said, yeah, but I did all the work
right up until I just wrote down the wrong answer.
And she would say, if say we were doing an
experiment where we were sending someone into space, that your
miscalculation and the wrong answer. But no, no, no, But

(01:18:52):
that's where I would Kevin Bacon would have to solve
he and Tom Hanks miles from nowhere, And this is
where I would no, no, no, you won't. Just let
me write the answer down in matth. You want me
to show work. I'm showing you all my work. I
got it right all the way until had to show
you all the way until the end, all the way
until the end, to show he were in a fraud.
Had I can imagine that parent teacher conference. I I'm

(01:19:16):
Jason Smith's mother. Oh yeah, your son is a fraud.
Wait what he's a He's a complete and total friend.
I was called I was called many things in the
parent teacher conferences, but I was never called a fraud.
Well that's good. My mom would always come home and
she would always say I love you, and teacher said
great things about you. But oh, I would say what
because they would always say the same thing. This I'm

(01:19:37):
talking this is not about me who But this is
just the truth. You say your son is really smart.
He does. He does really well. He understands stuff. He
know if he doesn't know, he asked questions, he does.
He does really well on the test, he does great.
He understands he's into the work. I go, but he
just can't stop talking to people around him. He just
has to, he has to talk to other people. And
it just I can't get a whole lesson in why

(01:20:00):
you do that? I go, I don't know. I just
I don't know because I sit next to really cute
girl in this class and I'm trying to talk to see.
I like the way it works now that if your
kids not a troublemaker and the grades are okay, please
just sign this to acknowledge that you know what's going on.
Don't show up, don't schedule a conference unless we have
a problem. I would get the same thing. My report
card would say, you know, Spanish comments. That was always

(01:20:23):
the worst part of me. In fact, I thought of
cutting off the comments at one point and bring it home,
but I couldn't do it. It was comments a distractive
influence in class English. Three comments a distractive influence in
class like you had a code that the teachers could
type in saying great, so everything. I would always get
code seven seven was a distractive influence at least on
three of my classes. Would say that all that sums

(01:20:44):
like that should have become the subtitle for the show
that Smith show with distractive in the influence, And I
always said, he it's distractive, not disruptive, Like disruptive would
be a big deal. I was distracting. If I was disrupting,
the class asked. But I'm just distracting a little bit.
It's just hey, I'm just I'm just saying, hey, look
over here. I'm not saying hey, you look over me

(01:21:06):
right now. No, I'm just tracting. Who wants a hat?
Who wants a hat? He showing up with the sleeve
of hats that gives out way too many hats now
are all jetstats? Nobody wants them. I can smell like
poop's recycling. The Jets stunk when I was in high school.
Keeps asking us to smell his finger need is great school.

(01:21:31):
Don't act like he didn't do it. It is the
It is the slide over baby, our pre hour pre show.
So there is gonna get it started earlier. Thanks for
doing that, Frostburg. I have no problem off of their
doofy tell it's for a cup. But I had it
almost all the way right because I said, what is
going to happen with the cowboys? Lincoln Riley's their guy

(01:21:53):
because obviously everybody we've heard the names that are all
out there. The Cowboys are moving at their own pace. Now.
Gave them way too much credit because they announced they're
gonna start interviewing candidates while Jason Garrett still had the job, realizing, Okay,
Jerry Jones is still Jerry Jones. But what I said was,
you're gonna hear the Cowboys. There's gonna be one name,
maybe two, but that first name you here, that's gonna

(01:22:16):
be the coach. And the only two people they interviewed
were Mike McCarthy and Marvin Lewis. Now you have to
interview a minority head coach for the Rooney rules. So
there's your Marvin Lewis, and I hope you got a
legit interview. But Mike McCarthy was the first name we heard,
and then it was Mike McCarthy Marvin Lewis, and then
Mike McCarthy spends the night at Jerry Jones's house and
the next day, Hey, Mike McCarthy is the head coach

(01:22:38):
of the Dallas Cowboys. He told all the other teams
that he was interviewing with, take me off your list.
I'm Dallas, Dallas, Dallas, Dallas. So I was right how
it was gonna take place. You're gonna hear one name,
then a second to be that first name. I said
it was gonna be Lincoln Riley, but instead it turned
out to me Mike McCarthy. And luckily they fired Jason
Garrett before they hired Mike McCarthy, because I guarantee you.

(01:22:59):
Jerry Jones was hoping to wait until January for Jason
Garrett's contract to end and then hire a head coach,
so Jays so he could shake his fist and everybody
and say I never we didn't fire Jason Garrett. Jason's
contract came to an end and we decided to move
on in a different direction. But we didn't fire him.
Don't say we fired him. There was no firing going on.

(01:23:22):
We had I guarantee you what, but he knew he
couldn't because at some point they realized they wanted Mike McCarthy,
And when McCarthy interviewed with the Giants on Friday, it
was okay, now we gotta move and we gotta move fast.
So they do it, and they go to McCarthy and
they give McCarthy the job. And now he's the head
coach of the Dallas Cowboy. So I got all the
way right, just right up until that very bit of

(01:23:42):
the end right there, so close, so close, I was
really close. It was really close, rimming No. So you
had the the idea of the adult in the room, right.
That is the theme that has been in this coaching search,
and that college coaches they're somewhat desirable. Matt Rule suddenly

(01:24:03):
is everybody's favorite. Lincoln Riley is is king where he
is so and and perhaps the people were a little
afraid after they got worked in the playoffs. Maybe that
was enough to saying nah, I don't know, but the
Matt Matt Rule, by all reports giants and Caroline is
still excited about it. With Mike McCarthy same agent as

(01:24:23):
Jason Garrett, so I got to imagine there's some knowledge
as to what's going on for Jason Garrett. He was
gonna keep trying to sell him on coming back right
as long as the key card worked and he could
walk into the building. Hell got assistant coaches were still
going to the gym, still get working on their computers
and looking at film. As of Friday into Saturday, when
they finally got the note saying, hey, don't show up Monday,

(01:24:45):
so they knew something was was brewing to get the
key cards from these people here so they can and
I'm clean out their stuff. I gotta I got a
big sleepover on Saturday night with the McCarthy fellow and uh,
we got pictionary plan for nine o'clock. And that's all
former cowboys. It's just Cowboys pictionary. Just you pull a
name out and you have to do it. So you know,
if you want to do Robert Newhouse, you gotta show Okay,

(01:25:07):
you know house, all right, Creyton and I would try
to guess new House. Can we try to pitch that
to our friends down here in Carl's Bend Company Cowboys
Pictionary and team of your choice pictionary and depending patent pending,
patent pending eggs. Jerry Benedict gets served as seven thirty
in the morning. Yeah, now you're going back into your
bread and bread bed and breakfast idea. You'll serve some

(01:25:29):
bread also that gets to sleep on the sheets that
are made out of uniforms of the Cowboys players we
have cut in the past that didn't make it. In fact,
I think who do I got on McCarthy's back. I
think I got des Is Jersey is on there a
little bit, uh miss sleeping on we We took off
the numbers because the numbers are kind of scratchy. Does
it make it feel better that there's one of denn

(01:25:51):
since Des is catching account, you're sleeping in the desk bedroom,
so that helps. I mean, he had this great statement
from Jerry Jones. And by the way, if you go
to type in Jerry Jones and Twitter to try to
pull up anything, the first thing that it lists is
Jerry Jones sleep over. Just so you know. The final
got to sleep over Jerry Jones's house. It's like sleeping

(01:26:15):
over at the ballpark. We're gonna show a movie. Drop
off is at seven thirty. We're gonna be watching Mowanna,
So if that's okay for your kids, you can sleep downstairs.
We got upstairs to let me know any dietary restrictions.
I'm gonna let lose a bunch of top pigs that
you can chase after like pool, and you can. You
can pick him up. At nine o'clock in the next morning,
We're gonna have a little bit of breakfast for everybody.

(01:26:37):
Everybody gets a gift bag to go home with for
coming to the party. Here and the chicken dish is
called hey house has the house has the balloons on
the front on the door. Let you know that that's
where the sleepover is. It's gotta picture of Mike McCarthy
on the it's gotta fat out of Mike mcgards out.
Do you park here? Just parking? Park your car right

(01:26:58):
here is what we gotta. Yeah. The last lines of
Jerry Jones statement, it's it's four paragraphs is pretty good.
He is and will always remain a cherished member of
the Dallas Cowboys family, and his contributions to the organization
are greatly appreciated. Tenure of leadership characterized by ability to
prove teams that played with effort, emotion, passion, blah blah

(01:27:19):
blah blah blah. And meanwhile, according to the reports, he
wanted fear, accountability and discipline from the new coach. Three words.
I never want to hear your fear, accountability and discipline. Okay,
you lack, That's what they say to us, Like they're
not afraid of Jerry Jones as it is, like there's

(01:27:41):
not enough fear, right, you don't need the middleman that
and be feared. What are you coming down from the
boxes enough? What We actually have audio of Jason Garrett
outside of Jerry's house trying to get in. If you
guys want to hear, Oh yeah, yeah, absolutely, let hello, Yeah,

(01:28:01):
I'm here for the gang bang. Well idea where that quickly?
Did you think was going on to Jerry's that late
at night? I don't head that back to the hotel.
We're gonna do a pin the tail on the cowboy.
What I did was a kidnapped the Beasley guy and

(01:28:22):
we're gonna put him up against the wall and you
get to pin the tail on him, and you know,
leaving us and catching all those passes against us on
Thanksgiving kept him around. How about that for a personnel GM.
No one's allowed to do ex Cowboys and cowboy pictionary.
I can't do that cold Beasley. But this is the
this is what the Cowboys did that I really like

(01:28:43):
because this is not a year in which there's a
lot of great candidates to be the head coach in
the NFL. It's just like the NFL draft, where some
years it's rich with quarterbacks. Right, some years you can say, hey,
we got to pick from Mayfield and Josh Allen and
Lamar Jack's in and Sam Darnald and look at all
these guys and it's like, Wow, somebody's bunch team is

(01:29:04):
gonna quarter In other years, if you need a quarterback,
well you're out of luck because well maybe Daniel Jones
or maybe Dwayne Haskins that's where we're gonna go. This
is one of those years because no head coaches that
were available were coaches that teams would go crazy for.
There was no young offensive coordinator stud that people wanted.

(01:29:27):
There's no Kyle shanahan, there was no Sean McVeigh, there
was none of those guys. Who was the best candidate
Mike McCarthy. Why because he can do exactly what every
team needs. He can be a CEO for the organization,
and he's got an offensive mind and can develop a quarterback.
He should have been the guy that everybody ran out
to talk to first. The Giant should have never let

(01:29:47):
him lay in New York without a contract, but they did.
The Cowboys got him there and he had a sleepover.
I mean, it's got to be done to sleep over
a Dave gentleman's house. And he had a sleepover Jerry Jones,
So of course he's gonna be the head coach of
the Cowboys. But all these teams, they had plenty of time.
We should We're gonna fire our head coach on money.
Talk to Mike McCarthy on Tuesday, because outside of Mike McCarthy,
there is nobody else for everybody who wants to criticize

(01:30:10):
Mike McCarthy and say I don't like it, I don't
like McCarthy, Like, okay, what's your what's your alternative? Then,
because you've gotta have an alternative, you can't just say
I don't like McCarthy. But who do you want? Is
Matt Rule? Suddenly, just because Matt Rule is the only
name left, it's like his image has amped up because
oh it's Matt Rule. No, Matt Rule could have had
a lot of jobs last year. Nobody hired him. Matt
Rule could have had the Cowboys. There's not a lot

(01:30:32):
of people left. You're taking a chance with anybody else.
This is not a great year. But if you need
a head coach, you have to decide and identify who's
the best candidate, Who's gonna do all this for me?
When there's no great offensive mind that I really want
to go hire Mike McCarthy was the guy the Browns
blew at, the Giants blew it. The Cowboys decided at

(01:30:52):
the end he's our guy, and they got him right away.
Giants let him out of the building. When we look
at what McCarthy is for any of those teams you're
looking for going from B to C. He's been to
the Mountain and he's had culture change right from far
to Rogers or whatever ended with Rogers at the back
end where they didn't like each other much and the
offense went stagnant. You've got you've got all these other

(01:31:15):
places where you're either trying to fix Baker Mayfield and
all that talent in Cleveland, you've got the Giants with
your young quarterback and you're running back that you've got
your base right to get going on on that, or
you've got the Cowboys were in theory, you've got your
fifty three ready to go. So as an attitude adjustment,
is he the guy to make Dak Prescott go from
B to see? Time will tell, But he's the only

(01:31:38):
one with experience having done it. Twitter At how about
a fresco Mike gets swollen done the Jason Smithshow with
My Carment. I mean, he was the guy and for
teams to fail to want to realize and identify that
he was the candidate, well they all missed out. The
Cowboys didn't. They were gutsy. They went and got him,
and now everybody else is really scrambling Twitter at how

(01:31:59):
about a fresh Mike hat swollen down The Jason Smith
Show with my best friend Mike Harmon, Coming up next,
we'll tell you exactly what is next for Tom Brady
and the New England Patriots. Do at least you didn't
play Cleveland. That's coming up next Fox. Be sure to

(01:32:21):
catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike
Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific Fox
Sports Radio. And now you don't they're back. You don't
even need to play the rest of it. Oh yeah, yeah,
that's one of the big announcements on. John Sterling and

(01:32:42):
Susan Walden will be back broadcasting Yankee games next year
from a big, fat month. How great is that? These
other announcements are fantastic, But you know my dad, you know,
he talks about Susan Waldman and he talks about her
like you would hear someone talk about their ex wife
that's here And as soon as it Walman says this
and nods, I'm like, oh, okay, that's not my dad.

(01:33:05):
Like they had a relationship, a lot of anger and
now it's it's it's over. What do you mean, like
that's your step mom's O. Stop you imagine you have
the call sus In Walman mom, Hey dad, I'm not
having problems with mom. What what's no matter, what's wrong?
I just can't imagine my dad with anybody. I mean

(01:33:28):
I can't. He's just not even Susan No, no, not,
I can't. I can't and you can who is my
also the problem? Actually just you know the whole premise
of Walter's and Jason's box. You know Walter you know,
uh no, you know who my dad his big movie
star TV star crushes. You know it was big crushes.

(01:33:50):
Katherine Bell, Katherine Bell, Yes, and Bruce allmight about just Bell, No, no, no,
lady on Bell, Yes Bell from from Frozen, from Beauty
and the Beast, the Beauty and the Beast. Sorry Bell
wasn't in Frozen. Come on harm and get your princesses right. Well,
it's funny because we were just talking about Stay Beast. Yes,
in the live action version, we were because he was on,

(01:34:13):
but that's the fake one. Sorry I was wrong. And
Robbie Benson, yes, he was the way he was and
and Robbie Benson was one on one with Bell. Yeah,
there may be five people have got the Robbie Benson
one on one. But then something Boomer would do Little Town.
It's what is next now? For Tom Brady and the

(01:34:38):
Patriots following their elimination on Saturday Night, the first thing
I want to say is this, and and there. There's
a difference in when a hated team for most of
the country loses a game, like the Yankees when they
lose in the in the playoffs, or if Lebron James
would lose in the playoffs because he's polarizing any any

(01:34:59):
teams that are pulled rising, usually when they fall short
of a championship, you get what's mainly on social media
reactions from fans. Man is ha ha, Look, they thought
they were so great, but they lost. Yankees thought they
were gonna win, but they lost. That's usually what you
usually get. The fingerpointing sure, and you get a little
Nelson months and you move on. Yeah, you get that.

(01:35:21):
But when the Patriots lost on Saturday, it was met
with unadulterated joy by fans all over Twitter that we're
celebrating as if their team had won a big playoff game.
The Patriots can't win the super Bowl, and it's NFL
fans and average people are over the moon that the

(01:35:42):
Patriots lost. And that's different from ha ha Team X
that is so polarized and has a great fan base
and they've been so good for so long. They lost.
You don't get that, Oh, I'm so relieved. The Yankees
losing is like my team winning. No, Usually the Yankees
losing is okay, it's the Yankee losing. I don't have
to worry about a team I don't like winning a championship.

(01:36:03):
But the fact that it was so much joy tells
you that the popularity of the Patriots is something different
than all the other teams in the NFL, because it's
no longer just about Okay, here's an evil empire that's losing.
Here's I am so glad they lost. I'll celebrate it
like my own team one. And that's a different let

(01:36:26):
That's like the difference between being a star and being
a celebrity, because if you're a star, all right, you're
a star, you're an actor, you're you're you're a big
actor or an actress, you're a you're you're a star.
That's great and and and you can do great things
and and have a great life, be worth millions of dollars.
But then there's the point where you become so famous
that you're a celebrity, and then you don't have to

(01:36:48):
do anything, and anytime you say your name is news.
Like Tiger Woods went from being an absolute icon and
star too now he is a celebrity because Tiger Woods
could never play another round of golf again, and his
name will get himself in the news for the next years.
That you get to that level of fame. Tom Cruise

(01:37:09):
could not make another movie the rest of his life
doesn't matter. He is a celebrity. That's the Patriots are
now celebrities because it's not it's no longer just like
it is for all the other teams are great day.
Look now that joy I mean that shows you the
interest level people have in watching the Patriots lose. And
that's level of popularity that nobody can say they get.

(01:37:29):
It's so fantastic on so many levels, right, I mean,
we're in I hate watching society as it is right
that that started with reality TV, whether you were watching
Jersey Shore to mock people, whether you're watching the Kardashians.
All the way through, I was actually binging as I
was cooking dinner earlier tonight. Uh, Simpsons as part of

(01:37:51):
you know, the whole Disney plus world. I got thirty
seasons to just let it stream. Uh, the iconic Fox
Show of course, and they had an episode called the
Town that made fun of the Patriots. You had the
character named Bonkowski. You can use that one and file
it for later. It's Gronkowski. Yeah. So number seventy eight,

(01:38:12):
you got a guy is tongue just rolling or you know,
out of his mouth like there, you know, and he's
on the float and you've got the hoodie coach in
the whole nine yards. So to be spoofed to that level, right,
it's like getting as soon as Saturday that Live does
the spoof on you, you've really hit next level. But
on Saturday, I don't think I've ever seen anything unite
the world. You could have embedded subliminal messages about anything

(01:38:35):
people hate tweets about the Patriots and the love of
them losing people I know that are just the most
casual of football fans are excited. The Patriots are not
in it. I started getting text going, what does this mean?
This keeps showing up in my Time's no more football.
Football is over, Football is canceled. Just me. It's one
of my Super Bowl picks was eliminated. Salty, that's done.

(01:38:56):
We're moving on to pitchers and catchers and a couple
of sass villain right, this is your best villain in
all of sports. Right, people hate watching lebron as you mentioned, Well, yeah,
this is a unifier. I mean the only thing that
could be better is if Tom Brady when he decides
where he's going, says, I'm taking my talents to in
certain blank here and channels that as you go, because

(01:39:20):
this is just something. Either you're tired of them, if
you're in the a f C, particularly you in the
a f C East and your Jets, you actively hate them.
Rights like growing up in Chicago, hated the Packers, but
had the respect for the fact that no matter how
you hit Brett Farve or how many times you hit
Brett Farve, it's son of a gun. Kept getting off

(01:39:42):
and he was walking. He was the terminator. Look, he
just kept walking. Back to the line. Script was like,
what the hell. The first thing I did on Saturday
was tweeted out after the game was over without any mention.
I just tweeted out the the the gift of yub
Nub from the end of return of the jetting with
everybody clapping and dancing and the walks are going crazy,
and here's the holograms of the former Jedi masters and
all Anakin suddenly is a good guy forgiven for slaying

(01:40:05):
all the younglings. All right. I had a problem with that,
but I mean, that's that's what That's what it was
for everybody. Was like a big yub Nub party for everyone.
You want to explain what happened to the younglings? No,
I don't think you do. But yeah, you're all excited.
You got a couple of those tweets out All throughout
my timeline, I've got fireworks going off. I got everything

(01:40:25):
possible to celebrate the demise. But then, you know, be
careful what you wish for. What do you guys, here's
the thing coming up. In ninety seconds, we'll tell you
exactly where things stand, right now with Tom Brady and
the pages and exactly what's going to happen. It's pretty easy.
All you gotta do is listen to Brady and Belichick
and Craft from the past twenty four hours. But first

(01:40:47):
be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart
Radio app. Look, this is pretty simple. Now that the
Patriots lose, what is next for Tom Brady? We've told
you all season long. Just follow the clues. Brady leaving.

(01:41:09):
He wants out, all right. He put his house up
for sale months and months and months ago, all right,
he opted out of his contract for this year with
the Patriots. Right, His trainer Alex Garrow, sold his house. Right,
he wants out. You get to the end of the season.
And what did Tom Brady say after the game on Sunday?
He talked about how he doesn't know what's next for

(01:41:31):
his future. Bill Belichick was asked the same thing, and
Bill Belichick said, I don't know about the future. We've
been worried about the Tennessee Titans, so don't ask me
about that today. Bob Kraft was asked, he said, well,
I hope Brady comes back or he retires. Just stop
for a second. Nothing that Brady and Belichick and Craft

(01:41:52):
say is the truth. None of this is the truth
when they talk about how, oh, I would like to
come back, or I would imply someone's coming. If Brady
wanted to come back, if the Patriots wanted Tom Brady
to come back, they would have said so. If Brady
wanted to come back, he wouldn't have opted out of

(01:42:13):
his contract for next year because he's now he's coming
off a bad year. He'll still get paid Revere. He's
coming off a year in which the offense struggled, in
which he struggled, he didn't make the Pro Bowl. I mean,
Brady's come off of better years before. So it's a
down year for Tom Brady. You don't know, this is
not the year you want to come off of going
to free agency. You want to come off a year
where you're thrown for forty five touchdowns and here you

(01:42:34):
are again and you're a Pro Bowl quarterback and you're
one of the best in the league. But if Brady
wanted to come back, he would say, I want to
be back here, because that's what every quarterback says when Hey,
what do you want? No, my choice is to come back.
Even if you want to leave. You still say that.
At the end of the season, in your postgame interview,

(01:42:54):
you still say I want to come back because your
season has just ended and you're fifteen minutes him playing,
and now everything you worked for all year is gone.
You say, of course I want to come back. Then
when things happened later on, of course no one holds
you to that, But you say that. Belichick could have said,
of course I want Tom Brady back. With Belichick's not
like that. Bob Kraft could have easily said I want

(01:43:15):
Tom Brady back, and I'm gonna do everything I can
in my power that he returns. Instead, we got I
hope Tom comes back or he retires. It's that simple.
If he was gonna come back, if there was interest
from the Patriots, or Brady wanted to be in New England,
they would have said so. One of them would have

(01:43:35):
said something along those lines. After they lost, and none
of them did. Follow all the news follow follow the
way things are going. Brady wants out. He's had it
with Belichick and McDaniels and and look whatever they say
on the on the surface, as far as the other
people go, you know, there's that angst and there's that hate,
and is I want to go prove that I can

(01:43:56):
win without you, and Belichick wants to prove he can
win without Tom Brady. All of that is out there.
It's sometimes it's pretty simple. Boy. You can't even say
you want the guy back next year. Like why can't
the Jets say they want Levian Bell back? That means
Levan Bell is gone. They can find anything for him.
He's gone. We don't want to pay him thirteen million
dollars because we're gonna trust our head coach who stinks,

(01:44:19):
but he doesn't use running backs in his offense, so
we're gonna let him go. If you want a guy
to come back, you always say that. Everybody does at
the end of the season, and it's just what you do.
But nobody said, you know, this is a divorce that's coming.
You know, Brady's gonna go on the Peyton Manning tour
of I want to go look for a team that
is ready to win, that has great weapons, that will

(01:44:40):
do things to help me succeed, And I'm gonna go
somewhere for like four years, not like one or two years.
I'm gonna go like Peyton at the end of his career.
I'm going for four years where I can go and
really cement my legacy by winning a couple of times
with a new team. That's what Tom Brady is gonna
do in the off seats. And they didn't need to
Frankenstein his neck back together. And he's got Alex Guerrero

(01:45:00):
that comes along and as well. That's why, because you
just wear the pajamas and you're all set, and you're
all set. I mean, those would be good for the
Jerry Jones sleep over you want to recover. I got
my own Jerry Jones pajamas. When that doorbell rings next, Yeah, Mike,
I got hard. He's just getting started. I got the
large size for your Mike. You could put on the
Jerry Joe. What number do you want? I haven't put
on the back of the pajamas for you can wear

(01:45:21):
your your own number going to bed or you know
what I could get you instead of a nightcapped but
it's kind of shaped like a headphone's guys, So what
you have I think is you got Brady posturing in
terms of I want to make sure he's respected from
a cash perspective, right, because he's always taking that down
also to try to lean on them to get him

(01:45:42):
some help, because even though he passed four over four
thousand yards and three touchdowns per interception in a down
terrible year, that you know you've got a guy that
can still still sling it, right, he was what uh
completion rate so down a bit, but also lesser weapons.
So there's the corral area. You don't have the the

(01:46:03):
Rob Grondkowski safety safety blanket or the security blanket like
a lioness that you'd have all those years. Edelman's banged up,
so trying to impress upon them that bringing me a
bunch of guys that are potentially in trouble or just
cast offs isn't gonna get it done. So he's kind
of sending that message, I'd like it to be here, right,

(01:46:25):
he's but if it doesn't work out, we'll see what happens.
Is the way he's phrased it. They've got a thirteen
point five million dollar dead cap if they don't resign him,
So you've got a little bit of a financial incentive
there for next year, another seven the year after. So
that kind of plays in a little bit. You had
Bill Belichick actually break character for a moment and called

(01:46:46):
him an icon in his Sunday address, right because he
did the Saturday post game and then he did that
half hour where they kept trying to goat him into
making all sorts of declarative statements about where the play,
where the team was going, and he wouldn't have any
of it pictures with a nikon That's what I said,
nikon camera that Now that's good. I like that. That's spin.

(01:47:09):
And then Robert Kraft is pushing it back, saying, well,
we'll do what we can. But you know Tom's earned
the right to do what he wants. So now you
got this negotiation right. Does Brady want to finish his
career with one team and maybe take a less adventurous
path towards the end of his career, and Bob Kraft
if he does leave, doesn't look like the bad guy. Hey,

(01:47:31):
we wanted Tommy here, but you know he wanted to explore.
So everybody said thinks saying, nobody wants to look bad,
because you know what what, Brady doesn't want to look
like the jerk leaving and Belichick and Craft, I want
to look like the ones who pushed him out the door.
So they're all postering. Now. I want to say this,
That's why I don't believe anything they're saying. They're all

(01:47:52):
saying what they're saying just because no one wants to
come out of this looking like you. You're the one
to blame. But see, I'm waiting for the hype video
some two to three months from now before the draft.
That's just Palpatine's laugh. And there they are back again
for one more round twitter at how about a fresco
mike at swollen Down the Jason Smith Show with my
car attached to some machine curious thing. All sorts of

(01:48:17):
guys in robes, crazy things would be different and they'd
be saying they want a reunion if there was gonna
be one. But was that your Palpatine? That was terrible?
It was I was waiting for the door. Pell started
to lead in and I saw him grin and that
was the end of it. Coming up next, what happened

(01:48:37):
today in the National Football League that's making every team
in the top ten incredibly happy? Tell you why next?
On Fox especially the Jets. Can you answer the door?
It's Adam Gaze, I said, I have tacos, Sir tacos here.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith

(01:48:58):
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart
Radio app. Just gotta listen to the whole show Fox
Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best friend
Mike Harmen and Everybody's picking in the top ten of

(01:49:20):
the NFL Draft. Got extremely excited today because Alabama quarterback
to a tongue of Viola made the announcement that he
is foregoing his last season with Alabama and heading to
the National Football League. We talked about this last week
that that was the decision he needed to make because
the NFL wants him. He's gonna be a top pick,
and when the NFL wants you, you go. I get

(01:49:42):
that his stock is at a low point now because
he's recovering from hip surgery. But the NFL Draft is
in almost three and a half months. He's got plenty
of time to get healthy for scouts to look at
his tape and realize there's a reason why this guy
through for seventy four touchdowns and nine picks the past
two years. Oh now we get why he was so good.
He'll move up and he will be a top three

(01:50:03):
pick because quarterbacks always rise. Don't pay attention to any
mock drafts that have him going at number five, number seven. No,
it's not happening because if he doesn't go in the
top three with who's picking, someone will trade up to
get him because everybody needs a quarterback and he's that
guy outside of Joe Burrow, because the Bengals are gonna
take Burrow at number one. I get that, but Tella

(01:50:24):
Viola is just as good a prospect. There's a reason
why he was the number one overall pick coming into
this year. Someone's gonna move up together. If you're not
in the top three, you're not getting Yeah. The only
caveat to it is if the medical still is spotty
right to where it's an in question whether he can
play in And I can't think that's some big a
deal because Stems will still take a guy knowing, hey,

(01:50:45):
al right, maybe he doesn't play for us until November,
but he's still that good, and hey, we'll we'll take him.
We still love him, but we'll take him. And when
he plays, he plays well. But that's where I think
it could slide. I mean, it's not getting out in
the first round, right, There's no chance in hell that
that set out of the top He's still getting out
of the top three. I hope for your sake that
that that's the case, because you then it doesn't become

(01:51:06):
a question for whether the Jets could get it. So well,
you know, maybe you're the team to trade out. You're
the mystery, and they use him like Tayson Hill. There's
a mystery. But I mean the way you look at it,
and then at the top of the board on Cincinnati, Washington, Detroit,
right there, they're sitting there and they've got to decide

(01:51:28):
what they're doing with Matthew Stafford because I mean, that's
that's a long time and he's been in a decade, right,
been in the NFL a decade. I'm talking about a
couple of back back, broken bones in his back that
you're dealing with with the Chargers. You know, is Philip
rivers a one more year, so you have him as
a higher price whatever the dollar amount would be for

(01:51:48):
this year while TWA gets ready and you have the
tutelage for a year and make sure that that body
is fully right. So Philip gets to open so far stadium,
that would be no. Ver six. But to your point,
very few quarterbacks this year where you have the buzz.
I mean, Burrow comes from nowhere and the accuracy and

(01:52:10):
everything you've seen from him, he's number one to Cincinnati.
If they don't take a quarterback, then really you have
to wonder what's going on because you hired a guy
in theory to be a quarterback guru for somebody, and
it wasn't for Andy Dalton, that's for sure. So and
Finley in his brief time at the Helm looks more

(01:52:32):
like a long term project than a guy who's ready
to be the guy in but Tunola, a couple of
ankle surgeries and now you've got the hip. If the
hip doesn't check out so cleanly, come, I mean you've
got to have medicals like whether it's daily's, weekly's whatever
it is. But no, but there's been no hint of

(01:52:53):
this went badly. It went poorly. It was this. It
was always going to tell you that off to jump.
But you know we would know by now that the
formation to people that is out there that needed to know, Hey,
if the tune of Bill is surgery went bad or
the doctors didn't think he could recouver. We would know
that by now, we would know, hey, you know what
this is something this guy gets hurt, this guy has X,
Y and Z wrong with him. It's a degenerative thing.

(01:53:13):
It is that we would know that well. But that
that's the last part. That's still the question, because that's
not going to show up right away, right. I mean,
you go in and you clean it up as best
you can, you put a smile on, you make your announcement,
and then you start to rehabbing and hoping that it
isn't gonna be you know, a necrosis or degeneration kind
of situation. And he was all smiles with Lee Steinberg.

(01:53:34):
Congratulations to Lee. Another big client for him. Uh as
the agent super agent gets another one. But when we
look at this, I mean, you've got teams so so
in need of quarterback. As much as we talk about
the plethora of young guys to replace the outgoing older guys,

(01:53:54):
there there's still a dearth. There's still less than thirty two,
let's put it that way. But look look at the top, Evan, right,
and this this is where you're you're gonna see my
point of all the teams picking in the top seven
every team. If you said do you want Tulla Viola
or do you want your quarterback? They would say we
want to. The Bengals obviously would want to, but they're

(01:54:15):
gonna wind up taking Joe Burrow. The Redskins, would you
rather have to or Dwayne Haskins rather have to? Uh?
I think they'd rather they would, well, they're gonna well,
if they were smart, they would realize, do we need
to take a quarterback? But when there's a quarterback, there
there's a quarterback. But Chase Young is also a guy
that most experts and I put mine with a small

(01:54:38):
e uh that would say he's a guy you fit
for the Golden Jacket. I think Joe Klatt said that
a number of times. Every time a guy's not a quarterback,
it's well, here's how we justify taking a guy this
high because he's going to be a haul of sa
Kwan Barkley is gonna be a Hall of Fame, right,
he was so good this year, you leave David Gentleman
was so good this year? It's sake Kwan Barkley. But

(01:54:59):
when you quarter Bapers looked pretty good with the last
two games, and yeah, that last game was great day.
It really helped his overall. Look, if I was the Redskins,
who would you rather have yet Dwayne Haskinson to show
that he was great and you've already seen that. It's
okay in the NFL now to take somebody one year
and move on from them, because no one's met at
The Cardinals were moving on from John and you did
change coaches, just like Arizona did. The Lions couldn't, couldn't,

(01:55:21):
should move on. They've had Stafford for a decade. It's
not getting better. Okay, let's move on. Well, well, someone
will be eah in Matthew Stafford for the next three
or four years and we'll take to a tongue of
Iola and restarted. The Giants should as well, but no,
no did. Gentleman went all in on Daniel Jones. He's
gonna be a Hall of Famer. But the Dolphins want
to uh. The Charges will want a quarterback after moving
on from Philip Rivers. The Panthers will want a quarterback.

(01:55:43):
Someone's gonna move up. You gotta have the guts, you
gotta say we gotta trade up to number three or
number two if you want to a tongue of Iola.
Because everybody in the top seven needs a quarterback, and
somebody's gonna say, what is it gonna take for us
to move up there unless a team like the Redskins
are Lions says Nope, We're staying right here because if
he's there, we're taking them. Delicious drama. You think Matt
Patricia's taking a quarterback, it would be awesome, That would

(01:56:06):
be awesome. He's got to keep his job, right Twitter,
And how about a fresco Mike and swollen dome coming
up next? What was not being said about Matt Patricia's
old team, the Patriots, following their loss. Fox. Be sure
to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with
Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific.

(01:56:29):
Fired In There, the Oasis, Every slide over, Gig Gig Giginy,
who's there? Hi, I'm here for the get together. Welcome inside,
Jason Smith, Mike harm In, the band, back together, everybody.

(01:56:49):
We're all here together in l A. Except for Jason Garrett.
He's outside peeking through the window. Yeah, yeah, he is.
You have to make sure we can't get in Frostberg.
You might try to pretend to he's an employee. Well,
he does want to crash at your house overnight, Jerry,
that these sleepovers even's house lots of guys right, Oh yeah,

(01:57:09):
people knocking on my door all the time, dude, can
I do a sleepover? Well? You live next to j
j Abrams trying to figure out how to get the
next script. You know you want you want to hear
a funny story, Tay, what happened in my house? I'll
tell you real funny. Woman across the street from me
was waiting for a taxi cab to come pick her up.
Taxi comes to pick start and I was gonna say,

(01:57:31):
nobody's calling. She was taking a car service. And the
guy gets out of the car and and and wants
to make sure it's for the woman who's coming out.
And I just happen to be leaving my house at
that at this time, So I'm like okay, and I'm
watching what's going on across the street, and and the
woman comes out of the house and goes, are you
my driver? He goes, what's your name? And she goes,
what what She's what's your name? Because are you my driver? What?

(01:57:53):
You'm not gonna tell you my name? But I have
to tell me your name if i'm your driver, And
I'm going, okay, what's happening. I walk over, I go, hey,
what's going on? And my neighbor says, this guy's asking
me question. I don't know what the hell he's talking about.
I'll show your mind if you show me yours driver.
And I was like, all right, let me just figure
things out, and and over, and I got knocked on
the door and say, can get to the woman's daughter,

(01:58:14):
can come out and make sure everything is okay. But
don't have to explain that to my daughter's once. Why
did you just tell that guy your name? Why did
you say? Did you know? I don't want to say
my name because you know there's a big lawsuit here
now everybody it's become national news. The problem at l
a X trying to get in and out. It's just driving.
Just the last couple of nights. It's terrible. The taxi

(01:58:35):
drivers are now trying to force the issue to know
what their argument is that they're trying to help the
elderly and the infirmed by being amble, not Hey, we're
losing all our business to uber drivers. Well I can
see that, but I can see that part it's good.
That's a good angle. But it's just I mean, flying
in last night from l A X, I was saying
to myself, you gotta be kidding me. We have to

(01:58:56):
walk all the way on. Nobody feels get picked up
it is. That's not a for me, but for everybody. Yeah,
they're still not feeling bad. You really think themeric cares.
We can care well, the mayor cares about that. I've
got rats to deal with. The uh yeah there and
there was. There was nobody uh taking over a bunch
of uh the horses and buggies like they were in Michigan. Well,

(01:59:19):
I mean it was you were one of them. I
did not do that. Everybody in that picture had a
bull Well that you might have had a wig. We
do live in l A. You could get someone to
work for you pretty fast. Putting together and outfit like that.
Everybody in that looks like the whip that Frostburg was.
You stole most from three Stooges. They all looked like

(01:59:40):
it was like Davy Jones and Michael Nestmuth, like they
were all members of the monkeys. That's what they all
look out get a most look like Suny Hamilton's I
want to talk sports with you. There's the greatest fifteen
minutes on tape. Oh my god. But if you do,
here's my thing about hacks just real quick, about a legend.
If you He always would end his segments by saying

(02:00:02):
he was a legend because in the nineties, before the Internet,
people listen to hacks all because he would just give
you the headlines. He was never live. Thought a couple
of segments with him. The first he was like a
big radio star. But this was before the air of
the internet, and his first segment of the show was
always here's all the headlines, like and things you can

(02:00:25):
get by going on the internet and clicking on any
dot com. But before this was what you could do,
he would give his first fifteen minutes. And tonight the
Big Marquis NBA Games, Head Antonio hosts the Lakers. Here's
what head coach Phil Jackson had to say going into
the game. But what if I were to tell you
right now that you are working with one of his
former producers, are wait wait wait was it Ralph Irvin?

(02:00:46):
Ralph Irvin was really oh okay, So he would do
his whole segment. I mean, this is this is trust me,
this is a great story. She would just do. His
whole segment was was just here like like it would
be like me opening up a newspaper and just saying
here and then tonight, don't forget. In the NHL, the
Pittsburgh Penguins have a big tilt against the Montreal Canadiens.

(02:01:07):
Pittsburgh is in first place the Northeast Division, Montreal in
second place. This one will be for first and that's
all we do. And then he would finish by saying,
you've just heard the best fifteen minutes in radio, and
then he would take phone calls. And my whole point
was always, if I just listened to the best fifteen minutes,
why would I listen to the rest of the show?
Because what what? What? I just heard? The best fifteen

(02:01:29):
minutes supposedly better than the rest of the day you'd
find anywhere else. Ralph, was it your job to open
the page of the newspaper so he wouldn't have to
do anything Page A C six to see seven, CE
seven to see eight. When we get to the horse racing,

(02:01:49):
we're stopping. Ralph's job was to make sure the internet
didn't work in the building. Where do you think I
got all these stories from that's what's going on, that's
what's going on in the world of sports, and the
phone calls coming up back to Eugenie's Alaska. And then
when there was like just one or two blogs, everybody

(02:02:10):
did the same stories. Like you would get a crazy
story about how, you know, Jaguars quarterback David Garrard is
not doing his weekly hit because he's piste off of
the Jaguars, right, A story that would never even fly
anywhere now in the world of sports. But because there's
like two sports blogs, that story is there. Everybody would
do it like would be everybody's story, would do it all. Oh,

(02:02:30):
David Garrod, who cares about David Garard not doing his
in he's mad at the Jaguars radio station. But that's
what passed four big you know news and that's that
was sports talk radio in the nineties. And Ralph Irvan
was at the forefront of the butt that he was
writing the butt You have to run around with the carts.
What do you have to do, Ralph, show me your
lightning ball. He was a lot of carts. It was.

(02:02:52):
It was Ralph's line of cars. Ralph's line was I
want to talk sports with you. That was was Ralph's low.
I want to talk sports with you. Bring your a game.
Don't lame, caramel, I can I can do a whole
open if you really wanted it. Oh well, you know,
one night, we're gonna do that. I want to do
a show one night where we do it without using
the Internet to tell to show people, you know, like millennials,

(02:03:15):
you know what what it was like to do a show.
You know, twenty years ago, internet high speed sports wire
was a real thing. Yeah, but still, what else would
you have besides Oh and right now in the third quarter,
Sacramento is tied with the Clippers. There was a printer
that constantly fed off stories on its own, right, but

(02:03:36):
you would only get like three lines of a story. No, no, no,
you'd get full stories. Yea. And how about this score
from two nights ago in Major League Baseball? You know
the A's won that game fourteen thirteen, we went off
the air, it was still a ten ten get. That's

(02:03:57):
a story. The mats bleeping side. Well, that was always true,
and that keeps printing that, that just keeps coming out.
I want to do that one night where we don't
use the If we could get by without using the Internet.
Just to show people what what it was like when
you can't look up something that's not a bad IDEA
major League Baseball All Star Break, Well, they'll do it

(02:04:18):
on Super Bowl Sunday. It was an innovation when I
first installed an Internet computer in the studio. I remember that, well, hey, Atlantic,
and find out what's going on. Not wait, I'd have
to wait for dial up. We thanks, Ralph, appreciated my friend. Hey,
and anytime I want to talk sports with you the way.
I don't want to say how it unfolded, but the

(02:04:43):
Patriots getting eliminated from the playoffs is still the top
topic in sports. You got that, You've got Mike McCarthy
going to the Dallas Cowboys. But now that the season's
over and we've seen the Patriots talk and talk about
the year, all the attention is being spent on Tom
Brady and where is he going next? He's gonna re sign?

(02:05:03):
Is he gonna go play someplace else? Right now? I
get that part of it, But this is something that's
not being talked about that is a really big deal.
This season. It's like the Patriots had a whatever happens
happens attitude for it every year is a super Bowl

(02:05:25):
or bust type year for newing we're winning the super
Bowl or it's a failure. We are singularly united in
winning the super Bowl and all of us doing everything
we can to reach that goal. I didn't get that
long view from the Patriots this year. I didn't get it.
I I got a we're gonna play this year, but
really the focus is on after this year, what happens

(02:05:48):
next year, because now that Tom Brady is likely leaving.
You know, Belichick has been planning on what's gonna happen
after this year, and and Craft is doing the same thing,
and Brady is doing the same thing. Not that this
means they didn't practice as hard as they do or
didn't look at enough film or didn't try enough, but
just it was like, looking at this year, it was

(02:06:09):
it was a giveaway that we're going to just play
this season out. We're not going to evolve or adjust
and do everything we normally can to find those advantages
to continue to win. When they were eight, No, it
still wasn't hey, big bad Patriots, right, No, it was, hey,
the pages have problems, the offense isn't scoring. I didn't

(02:06:31):
see any change of a game plan out of Josh
McDaniels to try to get the Patriots out of their doldrooms.
It was there was no Tom Brady really rallying his team.
We had the one video of him saying, we need
to be more explosive. Well, okay, you just ask your
guys to be more explosive. Doesn't mean they were hiding
their explosiveness and now they're gonna do it because they
say it. But I just got the the overview of

(02:06:53):
the Patriots is that the long view wasn't for this season.
It was for after this year, Like, we're just gonna
play out this season and however it ends, it ends.
If it ends in the super Bowl, great, but if
it ends we don't win, We're not really playing for
this year anyway. They didn't go crazy in the off
season and sign a bunch of free agents. They didn't
really try to solve their problems during the season. He
went a cropped up the last eight or nine weeks

(02:07:15):
when they went four and five and struggled down the stretch.
They never they never gave the sense that hey, we
are all in on this season and now that the
way you see them speak following their loss the Titans.
It's well, I don't know what's going on the future
of the future, and we'll worry about that. Then Bell
Belichick usually shuts down questions like that right away. I'm
here to talk about the Titans. But instead he talked

(02:07:36):
about the future and and made it seem like he
was upset that he was being asked about it, but
he kept talking about it. Tom Brady usually would say
this season, this game just ended ten minutes ago. We
could talk about my future another time, but instead I
am ready to talk about the future. And now here's
Bob Kraft today ready to talk about the future. That
usually doesn't happen, but we got that. So I wonder
was the overall view of let's go all in on

(02:07:59):
a Super a Bowl in was that there for the
Patriots or was it, well, we're gonna we we have
what we have right now. But as far as signing
free agents and spending a lot of money and signing
guys too long term deals, that's something we're gonna do
after this year when Tom Brady leaves, well, or even
if he's not leaving. The idea that you weren't going
to be able to put band aids on this year,

(02:08:20):
and they're not a team that panics, right, they did
kick the tires. They brought in Antonio Brown if Antonio
Brown wasn't a knuckle head. And I'm talking about the
just the knucklehead part, not the allegations that those are
two separate things. There's one thing the music video that
I showed you before, which is a clear rip off
of Nino Brown and the Carter Uh in terms of

(02:08:44):
count in cash and people basically wearing next to nothing.
There's a lot of button that video. Uh, And to
put it, put it bluntly, but people every everybody's wearing
a mask. It's really weird. But like if the knucklehead side,
and then you still have more accusation and allegations. And
they only had him around long enough to score one touchdown.

(02:09:05):
If you could keep him around, I mean, Josh Gordon
must have known that he wasn't doing what he needed
to do to stay right. He ends up in Seattle
and now he's suspended indefinitely again. So those were your
two big play receivers, so you had the the idea
that they'd be a big part of your offense and
then neither one of them is there Nikkila Harry isn't

(02:09:26):
there for half a year, so like, there's three parts
to your passing game that aren't there. And I think
they always held out hope that Gronkowski wouldn't be smashing
Lego figures and having so much fun with TV that
he'd want to play football again. So you held out
a little bit of hope there and it didn't happen,
couldn't happen for who knows, But there there's so many

(02:09:49):
moving pieces, and you know, Sony Michelle was hurt all year.
I think to some degree it gets to the Lebron
Lebron James not quite load management. But we did what
we could and now we don't have the extra four games,
all the extra and we had, we had all these
questions surrounding us all year about sales of homes and
everything else. Yeah, it was just a different kind of year.

(02:10:12):
Were they were they all in I I don't. I
don't get that they were. But the beauty of it, though,
is from that organization you never felt panic at all.
Like the post game stuff, like the fact that Bill
Belichick is now not not that he was answering questions
about the future, but that he was at least engaging
that a little bit as opposed to not at all.
We're still focused on what just happened. Uh, you know

(02:10:34):
ten minutes ago or twelve hours ago or whatever, that
he wasn't he was willing to at least push away
from it a little bit, as Brady did that. You know,
that's a little bit different. But in season, they're never
gonna they never let him see you sweat, right, That's
been the Patriot way all the all throughout, and they'll
still be there to torment your jets. You're not getting
off scott free just yet. Twitter, I have about a

(02:10:56):
Fresco Mike had swollen dome. Great news. There's a quick
and easy way you could save money. Switched to Geigo.
It only takes fifteen minutes to see if you could
say fift or more in car insurance. Go to Geico
dot com and see how much you could save. Well,
coming up next, you got more in the NFL playoffs?
Why I have never been happier? Or go one in
three with the games I picked this weekend. It's coming

(02:11:18):
up next Fox. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm.
Eastern seven pm Pacific, Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith
Show with my best friend Mike Carmen. Hey, I want

(02:11:38):
to talk sports with you. I had. I had a
great time in Detroit, and one thing I did that
was really fun was I have a lot of young
cousins and and kind of nieces and nephews, and every
time they would try to tell me a knock knock joke,
I would I would do what my dad used to
do to me all the time, knock knock jokes, and

(02:11:58):
it would just it would just piss me off. But
I said, well, now I'm gonna try it so good,
so give me not so pretend your can you give
men like like Jason, I want to tell your knock
knock jokes. Knock knock, come in, come in. No, no, no,
you're supposed to say whose eyesaid? Okay, go ahead, go ahead,
say knock it's open, who's there? They would get so

(02:12:19):
frustrated and no, you're just supposed that's just bullying. Is
that's not bullying? Well, you're messing with her, Joe, that's
not bully. Oh, it's not bullying. That's just having fun.
That says a difference. That's not bullying. Well, I'm glad
that it took that turn because Ty Shirt and I
looked at each other as you set that up, seeing
as it is the slide over base Man that was
getting weird, you know, fired in It is the Jason

(02:12:46):
Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmony. Welcome back
from Detroit. I am very happy back. I gotta change
my avatar from Detroit versus everybody on Twitter back to
something more Mets, Jets whatever oriented. But for your hand,
I can't. I can't tell happy. I'm back to be
back in the sunshine and good weather and not walking

(02:13:07):
around in the slush and the rain. Boy just gonna
picture it to up. Put it up. You guys are
getting him. Hey, let's get to it. We're trading Sam Donald.
There is a if you had, actually you can pick
him up on Dwayne Haskins. If that actually happened, I
wouldn't be so incredibly upset about it. I wouldn't be
so oh my god, I can't believe we did. I

(02:13:28):
would say, wow, we really did that? Oh do we Jets? Yeah?
But Adam Gates is still going to be the coach,
So what does it matter? We got Adam Gates I'm
just waiting around for him to be fired. Him next
year is gonna suck to So I'm waiting for him
to be fired. And he's too busy telling Laby, I'm
bella beat it. Donald's gonna finish his rookie contract. We're

(02:13:50):
still hacking if he's a good quarterback or not, because
the Jets said, you know, it's not about that. Let's
let's let's let's let's make it about something else. I
have never been happy to go one in three in
picking the games this past weekend than I was here
because I went one in three, right. I missed the
Bills game because I told you that I was close.

(02:14:11):
I was close. I was close. I was close. I
missed the Patriots because said the Pats are gonna still
find a way to win. Even though I said Derrick
Henry is gonna have a big game and Ryan Tannehill
is not gonna win this game, I thought the Pats
would get through. I was still close. He did win
it with one third down conversion, that one little out
about a seven yard out, and he stunk and they

(02:14:32):
still won the game. Uh So I lost that guy.
I won the Vikings game because I told you the
Vikings were gonna win, and then I missed the Eagles
game because I had the Eagles. Yeah, I took it over,
but Eagles I had to take because they were my
Super Bowl pick, so I had. I also thought I
was getting Carson Wentz without you know, Genavian Clowney trying

(02:14:55):
to leave war paint on the back of his helmet
and leaving him taking him out of the game. We'll
get to wins in a minute. But two and two
against spread, no for four. I mean Buffalo McDermott and
Josh Allen omi an apology as well as the referees
for that blindside block nonsense. One of the worst calls
that we've seen. Uh in rees memory letter spirit all

(02:15:17):
that of the law. I mean the Patriots, as you said,
they gotta win one, No, not so fast. And then um, yeah,
I had the Saints thinking they'd take care of home field.
Because look, the reason I'm happy is because it doesn't matter.
Because on social media it was amazing that all I

(02:15:39):
got was all these Vikings fans. People were so Jason,
oh my god, you were right, You're right. They were
so happy and right that I picked the Vikings. The
other games I missed. Didn't matter. It didn't matter, but
it was so much Skull Nation loves me because I
picked the Vikings, said exactly how they were gonna win. Look,
the Vikings are gonna do enough on offense. Dalvin Cook's
gonna be a big difference. They got Adam Feeling back,

(02:15:59):
They have the best offense they've had in weeks. Their
defense will stop the Saints. And that's exactly what happened.
Now again, I got the other three games wrong, but
that didn't matter because I got this one right. Okay,
because in Minnesota right now, I'm a with Paul Allen,
my buddy, Paul Church and everybody. You're a hero because you,
of course Kirk Cousins. I bet Kirk. The Kirk Cousins

(02:16:20):
game came a couple of weeks after it set. It
also came too early. It didn't could have been someone
else's game because because they need Kirk Cousins to have
that game again and again, yeah and one more. This
week is the way they're celebrating this. You get the
game ball and you slayed that monster and all these
youth from like, no, no, they still got a lot
of work to do. This week is different, but but

(02:16:41):
last week was last week and it was great. Yeah,
you're a hero, and I don't like you were a
painted purple like me. I don't even want to take
the loss or Buffalo because that game was just stupid.
At the end, I was hoping for a tie. I'll
be honest with I was. I was just stupid. I
really I would like to see somebody try to explain
football to someone who doesn't know anything about it, but
only using the last three minutes of that game to

(02:17:01):
be able to explain football. Understand, don't understand? Oh so
the punter can spike the ball? Yes, yeah, but you
may not see this again decades but that yeah yeah
yeah yeah but wait, but they know that they're gonna
get the first down, right, they know that they marked
for the first down. Yeah yeah, I mean it was
just stupid and insane. So I don't feel like I

(02:17:22):
have to take the loss there and Philadelphia, everything I
said was gonna be right. I said the Seahawks couldn't
run the football. Russell Wilson couldn't win this game. The
Eagles were gonna be able to do what they were hot,
but Carson Wentz got hurt and fifty six year old
Josh McCown came out and couldn't win. I was right,
except Wentz got hurt. So I feel like the only
loss I should have is New England, even though I

(02:17:43):
did say Derrick Kenny's gonna have a huge game, So
I'll take that one. But the other ones, I feel like, Oh,
come on, the Bills game was just stupid. Now, now,
good effort by by the Eagles, right, Josh McCown. They
moved the ball effectively, just couldn't finish off drives, and
his post game speech is one that will resonate for
quite some time. Take that and the Tom Hanks working
on something doing with both of those. But yeah, the

(02:18:05):
Bills game just insanity. Some of the decisions are down
and distance, the fourth and twenty seven, let's go for it,
Josh Allen running back twenty yards and instead of trying
to get outside the tackle box and winging it into
the four row, absorbing sacks and taking them out of
field goal position, then you have the blindside block call

(02:18:26):
that I mean, at that point, they didn't deserve it.
They played terrible, but that could have been a game
winning uh situation, because you at least would have been
able to either pin them back or take your mid
fifties fuel goal attempt. But yeah, you got your vikings,
Wayne Buddy. Good for you, you know. And I really
I'm not that upset about the no pass interference call
because look, watching it live, they were both jostling for

(02:18:49):
the ball and could have called holding. You could have
called defensive pass interference. But what I was upset about, right,
was upset about, was that it was only a cursory review.
I mean, this is a team is going home if
you don't get this call right. So let's make sure
I mean, and I get We talked to Mike Pereira,
who says its obvious the NFL doesn't want to overturn
all play unless they feel it's absolutely overturnable. If it's

(02:19:14):
something yeah, if it's questionable, they don't want to do it. Yeah,
but at least look at it a little bit more
and make it feel like, Okay, here's why there was
no pass interference because they were both Joscelyn and if
you turn around for the ball, you can break it up.
It wasn't that Kyle Rudolph, you know, was standing and
it and the dB fell down. And you want to
sell a call fall down and you're gonna get You're
gonna get that call. So I was okay with it

(02:19:37):
because it wasn't as blatant as last year, where boy,
you really missed that past interference. I was okay with that.
The biggest thing was it felt like the ending to
an episode of w W E SmackDown on Fox where
you hit a guy with a chair, you get the count,
you get the belt, and you the referee, and everybody
sprints out of there because everybody knows something bad just happened. Referees,

(02:20:00):
the referees were rather the fast. You heard the radio
call from Zach Street uh and the New Orleans team,
and obviously you know they're they're bitter, and it's all
about officiating a lot of inefficiencies from that squad. They
did not play uh good winning football. But you got
a shot, right, You still got a puncher's chance, uh

(02:20:20):
to to finish it off. And in in that particular instance,
we didn't get a full explanation. Nobody went on the bike.
You got a all right, that's it. Thank god, I'm
out of here. It's a good night. Everybody were leaving
the congratulations. Oh my god, we gotta go. I mean,
that's really what it felt like. We have more on
this game because coming up next, why one team is

(02:20:44):
getting a pass when they continue to fail in the postseason.
I said postseason, postseason, that's coming up in nineties seconds.
But first, Ralph Irvin has everything that's trending. He's gonna
talk sports with us. All right, what do you have?
I want to talk sports with you here on a
Monday night, at least Monday night in the West Coast
where everything has gone final in the NBA, Luca don

(02:21:07):
che It's thirty eight points, eleven rebounds, tennisis and Dallas
hands Chicago their fourth straight lost one eighteen, one and ten. Meanwhile,
Utah's won six and ro own fact that Jazz of
won eleven of their last twelve. They go back to
the homeland, so to speak, winning in New Orleans one six.
Denver gets forty seven points, that's a career high for

(02:21:29):
Nicola Yokich in a one fifteen win at Atlanta, Josh
ritzins in twenty three points. Philadelphia beats Oklahoma City one thirteen,
while San Antonio handed Milwaukee there first loss after a
five game win streak to Marta Rosen twenty five points.
And the Spurs are one oh four winners. Sacramento wrapped

(02:21:50):
up the night with a win over Golden State. The
Warriors have lost five straight games. Bowl season has come
to an end as Louisiana won the Lending Tree Bowl
seventeen over Miami of Ohio. Now we'll be back to
Jason and Mike and just a moment, but first word
from Farmers. Winter means it's time to bundle up your insurance.
Bundle home on auto with Farmers and you could save

(02:22:12):
on average of calle Farmers to get a quote today,
Farmers might have savings. My firmist for far insurance exchanges
and affiliates prob un avlable in every state. The finger
of blame doesn't always go in the direction it should,
but Jason and Mike will make sure it does. Right now,
as we sent it back to Jason Smith and his
best friend Mike Carman, thank you very much, Ralph Irvan.

(02:22:34):
The Saints fall short and they're not going to the
Super Bowl. I'm moving on to the divisional round of
the playoffs. There will be no championship for them this year,
just like there was no champions from them last year
and the year before that. All seasons in which they
won the NFC South, the Saints don't get any criticism,

(02:22:55):
specifically Drew Brees and Sean Payton. Why is this despite
the fact that Drew Brees, who's gonna go down as
one of the top five quarterbacks of all time, sure
fire first ballot Hall of Famer, is going to have
close to a twenty year run in New Orleans. And
right now you're looking at one super Bowl, which, hey,
winning the super Bowl is great, all right, it's great.

(02:23:17):
But one super Bowl for a guy that good and
he gets no criticism. Even Aaron Rodgers who's got a
Super Bowl could go down with one super Bowl gets
criticized in Green Bay. He should be doing more, should
be doing more with what he has. There, Sean Payton
and Drew Brees get no criticism at all. They get
a pass and is a lot of it because last

(02:23:40):
year and this year they can point and go, oh,
look at that, we got screwed by the refs. Yeah,
that takes away a little bit of it. But when
you have a great reputation like Breeze and Peyton do,
people are gonna make excuses for you. But this is
the Saints team that has won the NFC South six
times in the past thirteen years. Every other year they're
winning the NFC South. They won the NFC South and

(02:24:02):
each of the last three years, and they still find
a way to fall short and not win in the playoffs.
They don't score points as often as they do in
the playoffs. Their postseason games resulting in twenty three fourteen points.
Those are the last few playoff games, twenty four points.
They're not the team that's rolling up thirty points during

(02:24:25):
the during season. They're not that team. And I'm sorry,
but you deserve a bit of criticism. Sean Payne is
gonna be their fifteen years now. It's one super Bowl
with Drew Brees. But you have a great reputation. Drew
Brees has a great rep so does Sean Payton. People
like them. We can blame the referees, so criticism for
them kind of falls by the wayside. But for anybody

(02:24:47):
else it would be you need to be doing a
little bit more. You need to be getting a little
bit further. Why are you only this far every year?
Why can't you get further in the playoffs? Why can
you not move further in the layoffs? Before the last
few years, I would say because everybody looked at the
Saints as being a very one dimensional team. They throw

(02:25:08):
the football great and they play well at home, but
you put them on the road, it's not quite the
same team. So they're kind of an overachieving team because
they're built to play at home in the friendly confines
the Superdome where they can spray the ball all over
the field. But you get them away from home in
the playoffs on a cold field, they really struggle. No,
they've had a really good defense and they still can't

(02:25:30):
find a way. The only time they won when they
won the Super bowlers because their defense was lights out.
This was the beginning of the bounty gate defense that
Greg Williams had when and that's the time they won.
Sean Payton has had this kind of offense now going
on fifteen years and it's one Super Bowl. Drew Brees
been this kind of quarterback, most touchdowns in NFL history

(02:25:51):
and it's been one Super Bowl. Yeah, they're underachieving. Well,
and that's the thing. Watching it yesterday and as we've
been doing this this business, this of sports talk radio,
the sports commentary for a while, I mean, look at
what I persecuted Peyton Manning was for what he did
in the postseason, right, he and Tony Dungee dominating the

(02:26:12):
a f C South time and time again. And then
you had playoff failures. Right? How many times was his
playoff record brought up? Quite often? Right? And for the
two Super Bowls gets no credit. One was you beat
Rex Grossman at a bad Bears team in the rain
in Miami, and everybody remembers Prince performing, right, That's that's right.

(02:26:33):
Manning wasn't good in that game. Bears defense and special
teams is what dragged them there. Uh. And then Devin
Hester had the huge return to start things and then
offensively they were an emic, but they win second one,
all right. He was dragged there by the defense once
again in Denver had the record breaking numbers, but by
that point brock Os Waller and he were splitting time

(02:26:55):
and everything else. He gets one because of von Miller
and everybody. So it goes away because he got that
second Super Bowl, and then he retires and everybody loves
him right now, but Drew Brees still having a love fest.
You know what his career playoff record is right now?
Eight eight. It's got a very patent man who got
criticized more about pet Man. Yeah, maybe every year it was,

(02:27:17):
well he got there and then he couldn't win, He
couldn't get past this, he couldn't beat Brady, all of
those things for years and years for the Saints. Beyond
beyond just the final results of going home early, not maximizing,
because everybody wanted to argue, well, Drew Brees should have
been one of the NFL one hundred. Well, isn't it
the totality of what you're doing here, It's not just

(02:27:39):
stat compiling, Because isn't that why everybody said Tara Owens
shouldn't have been on with stat compilation for Drew Brees,
better reputation, more beloved guy. Right, what's more iconic than
after the Super Bowl win? Right? The headphones on his
son as they're standing there coming back. It was a
great story. They were a great story. But it's part

(02:28:00):
of it is why they get they get a pass
because hey, we like everything they've done and that's great,
and that's why everybody wants a great reputation in sports,
because hey, if I if I underachieve, I'm going to
get a pass. It's not gonna be Hey, maybe we
need to make a change of quarterback or head coach
or all these things, especially when you can say the
last two years, hey, let's point to the referees. They're
keeping us out, and the fan base is gonna say, yes,

(02:28:21):
the referees, they're keeping us out of the super Bowl. Yeah,
because they're they're mindless drones when it comes to that, right,
the blind allegiance and appreciate that and fan base and
and what we do too. I mean, because you know
there's folks that support us or any other member of
our our network staff, and you know they'll defend whatever

(02:28:42):
nonsense we say at times, except you, uh, they will
yell at you. I accept they love you because you
picked the vikings. But in in this case it's also
Sean Payton has been absolved of any of the game
management sins that everybody else gets called on. Right. McDermott
the other day was it and called out and crucified
for some of his decisions. You know what he did,

(02:29:04):
He went and said, well, Josh's gotta be better with
the ball, right, because everybody can agree, Hey, Josh Allen
still is inconsistent, the one that had the punt team
out there to spike the ball. But he tried to
kick the kids for both Peyton and Breeze. Peyton did,
I don't. I don't remember seeing it quoted anywhere I
was asking immediately. I was still here helping with with

(02:29:27):
the guys after my show ended yesterday with Will Blackman
and watching the game. And when they allowed after the
big sack that made it fourth and twenty three, just
inside of three minutes, they still had a time out left.
They went to overtime with that time out still in
their pocket. They never used it, so they were able

(02:29:47):
to run. Minnesota was able to run it down, and
by time they punted and the punt landed and settled,
it was at the mark you lost a whole minute,
a whole minute of game time by not calling that
time out, and then you never used it during your
ensuing offensive drive. Yet no criticism for it. Just absolutely assinine.

(02:30:07):
Like every other coach gets murdered for any of those
in fractions, they don't. They're down to these one possession
games when they're clear favorites. Right, they were seven and
a half to eight point favorite depending on when you
got in. All right, take care of home and finish
the job. You've got a fully healthy chimera. You've got
Jared Cook work in the seam, and you've got Michael

(02:30:28):
Thomas who catches anything in his radius. Yet no criticism
of Drew Brees not being able to find his target,
not being able to take care of business downfield. Taysom
Hill's the guy that's got to come in and it's
Gadget plays and he's a fantastic athlete. Friend of the
show right, multiple times he's been on with us, done
amazing things. He's the reason they were in that game.

(02:30:48):
Here's a reason they got to where they were. It
was at Drew Brees. Yet no criticism and Drew Brees. Meanwhile,
Tom Brady loses a close game and they've final play
after the coon punt. I it's I like Jim Kern
better than Bret Kerne. Nobody got the joke. I thought
it was pretty good. But the you know, pick six, fine,
it finishes it and away you go. But everybody is

(02:31:10):
quick to crucify Brady for a well, but again it
goes back to you. Makes it very easy. But if
but if Drew Brees had one more title, does he
finally get the only knock on Drew Brees is we
don't pick up the damn phone. He's still entire rant.
Take that breeze, Twitter and out about of Fresco. Mike

(02:31:32):
has swollen down. The Jason Smith Show with My best
friend Mike Harmon coming up next for anybody that doesn't
like the Mike McCarthy higher by the Dallas Cowboys. I
have one question that's gonna turn you all around on it.
What is it? You'll find out next Fox Fox Sports Radio,

(02:31:56):
The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Carmen.
Is that Drew Brees there? I think it's Jason Garrett.
He brought a pillow with it beatsas here. That's all
he has. Though it's gonna take a lot more than
a pillow to get into this party. Mike. Yeah, there's
no question about it. That's in his hands. The Best

(02:32:16):
of podcast goes up about fifteen or twenty minutes from
now on iTunes, Google Play, Fox Sports Radio dot com,
the i Heart Radio app, iTunes, Google Play, Fox Sports
Radio dot Com. You can use the i Heart Radio
app listen to the whole show parts of it. Whatever
you want come true. Rate us, give us five stars.
We'll love you forever and ever and ever. Just do it.

(02:32:40):
With Mike McCarthy being named the Dallas Cowboys head coach today,
there's a lot of oh, this is a bad choice.
Is a bad choice of bad choice Mike McCarthy. All right,
But let me ask you this if you think Mike
McCarthy is a bad choice, because if you're gonna tell
me I don't like it, I don't like it, I'm
gonna ask you a question that's going to slip you
around to my side and go, oh, no, this is

(02:33:02):
a good move because I like this move for the
Cowboys because the Cowboys need and what all teams need
this year, they need a CEO who can be in
charge of the program and who's an offensive mind that
can develop a quarterback the Giants need at the Browns needed.
The Cowboys needed the Giants, and the Browns got a
little too nervous about making this move, and the Cowboys
beat him to it by having a sleepover at Jerry

(02:33:24):
Jones with Mike McCarthy and Towels are up in the
top show. And I give them a lot of credit
because who else do you want? That's my question. If
you don't like Mike McCarthy, who else do you want?
And then when you want to go, Oh yeah, I like,
oh wait, oh suddenly Matt Rule is that great a candidate?
Suddenly Matt Suddenly Josh McDaniels is that great a candidate. No,

(02:33:48):
there's no young offensive coordinator minds, there's no Sean mcveigh's,
there's no Kyle Shannon's, there's none of those guys available.
There's Mike McCarthy, who was a proven commodity that has
done good things in the modern NFL, and then there's
everybody else. So how can you tell me? Oh no,
I wanted Matt Rule? Why because you know how Matt
Rule is gonna do. Lincoln Riley did not want to

(02:34:09):
leave Oklahoma, right, He wasn't part of the Canada pool,
and neither was Jim Harbaugh. So if you don't like
Mike McCarthy, tell me, because you need a head coach,
you gotta hire somebody. Who's that next guy. You can't
give me somebody else because the coaches that you wanted
to materialize out of nowhere. Jim Harbaugh's agent didn't call
the NFL saying, hey, my clients ready to leave Michigan

(02:34:31):
Urban Meyers and said, hey, guess what I want to
come coach in the NFL. Guys, I'll talk to anybody.
We haven't had any of that, none of those guys,
Lincoln Riley hasn't. Today. I'm ready after three gre years
of great quarterbacks, two eyesman trophies, I want to go
to the NFL. You gotta pick somebody outside of Mike McCarthy.
Those are the candidates, really, Mike McCarthy, and then there's
everybody else. It's a question mark. Yeah. The only other

(02:34:51):
guy that you say has the track record that you
would go in and hire from the from the criterion
that you set up is Greg Roman. And for the Browns,
he told him to beat it. Lamar Jackson and mark
Ingram are strong arming anybody that just wants to talk
to him. As we go through. You got Brian Dable
of the Bills who interviewed with Cleveland today. So maybe

(02:35:15):
what you've seen him do with Josh Allen and the improvement,
like there's still obviously a long way to go with
decision making, but the raw talent is there for him
to become a star as we roll forward, So maybe
you go there, man. I know Robert Sala has been
part of of the coordinator mix and Eric B enemy,
but nobody with that trueman improven track record that you're

(02:35:39):
looking for. Right, Marvin Lewis gets the interview. I hope
it was more than just cursory Rooney rule thing and
like look but also defensive minded. And he hadn't been
to the mound, right. He went A to B and
stayed at B for a long time before he was
finally fired. The situation I almost got right because I said,

(02:36:03):
you're gonna hear one or two names, that's it, and
then the Cowboy's gonna make their higher. And you heard
Mike McCarthy, You heard Marvin Lewis very briefly, and then
it was Mike McCarthy right now. Everything I said about
it was right, except for who was gonna watch? Because
I said they were gonna wind up with Lincoln Riley.
But and I gave the cowboys too much credit because
they were still talking about interviewing guys while Jacks and
Karen's still have the job. But still that's how he

(02:36:24):
was still pitching to keep his job. Of course he was.
I I don't know who else anybody else wanted. And
the Giants and Browns are now going to be stuck
because the Giants are gonna hire another Pat Shermer, and
the Browns are saying, do we have the next Freddie Kitchens.
I mean, that's really where you're at if you're both
of these teams right now. Because they waited too long

(02:36:44):
and they let Mike McCarthy get away. The Cowboys made
the move, should it never led him out for a sleepover?
Twitter and out about a Fresca. Mike has swollen dome.
